August 4, 2013 ‐ 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of posses‐ sions.” Luke 12:15 The Gospel message today is so contrary to our modern culture where advertising continual‐ ly tries to convince us that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not store up or hoard material possessions, but rather to live a grateful and generous lifestyle.

At Baptism, we accepted the call to follow Jesus. Be with us as we move along on our faith journey. Send us your Holy Spirit, that we might have wisdom for the journey. Help us to develop and share our gifts as good stewards, that we may use them in love and service in your Kingdom. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Revenues Revenues from the first and second collection under ran the budget for the year 201213. The budget for year 2013-14 has been increased since it is based upon the parish goal of $23,000 per week in the first collection. Expenses Most expenses ran on or slightly below the budget for year 2012-13. The largest under run was plant maintenance which is limited by the level of collections. In the past year, several projects that were planned had to be deferred. These included replacing the old steam tables and improving the lighting in the kitchen of St. Michael's Hall. The maintenance budget for 2013-14 has been increased significantly under the hope that we can meet our parish collection goal. Net Income Year 2012-13 ended with a deficit as the result of revenue shortfalls offset in part by the management of expenses. Mortgage Balance The outstanding balance renovation loan is $172,945 as of June 30, 2013

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 4, 2013
Financial results have been published in the bulletin on a quarterly basis for many years. We have traditionally displayed the annual budget of revenues and expenses compared to a year-to-date display of our actual experience. We have included a similar display this year. However, the Finance Council is not confident that there is a universal understanding among our parishioners of the actual financial position of the church. This commentary is aimed at rectifying that possibility. For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013, the financial results show that we had a small deficit. However, every Sunday, we report that our parish goal is to collect $23,000 per week and in most weeks, we fall far short. The reality is that the church is managed much like a household that uses available cash and not credit cards to pay the bills. If we cannot afford to do something, we don’t do it. We all know that one of the most urgent needs that Incarnation has faced is the maintenance of its plant. We have not attempted to budget what is really needed to get the job done. Furthermore, when collections fall short, we don’t even try to spend what has been planned for in the budget. Observe on the included Report of Parish Treasure, the Total Revenues under ran the budget by three percent as did Total Expenses. Then look at maintenance expense which under ran by eight percent. That is how we balance the budget. There isn’t a great deal we can do about many of our expenses without eliminating services but we can always defer maintenance. If you look at the budget for the new fiscal year 2013-14, you will see a projected increase in the first collection. That is how much we will collect if we reach $23,000 every week. On the expense side, we added all the additional funds into the maintenance budget. That means that by reaching our goal, we can take on many of the maintenance projects that we have been deferring. If collections do not increase, these projects will not begin. Three significant projects have been selected from our list of projects awaiting funding that will be started if the funding is available. These projects include the following: 1. Replacement of all remaining air conditioning equipment that is over 20 years old. This investment will not only make our building more comfortable. We can also expect to reap significant savings in the cost of electricity in the future. 2. Replacement of the plastic fencing around the property with steel rails and masonry columns. The plastic fence is constantly breaking and poses a safety threat during hurricanes. Placing of acoustically absorbent panels in the church to control the echo effect that makes many speakers impossible to understand. These three projects alone will cost over $150,000 and will consume all of the additional money projected in the budget. While we are on the subject of giving, we have added an additional display for your consideration. It is designed to show where our money comes from. Hopefully, it will encourage those of you who do not support the church financially to begin doing so. We would also encourage those who put loose cash in the collection to somehow identify yourselves through online giving, the use of envelopes or personal checks. Keep in Annual Iden fiable Offertory Giving ‐ Fiscal Year 2012‐2013 mind that if ever you need a document stating that you Weekly Range Annually # of Families % of Families are a member in good standing of your church, we have $0 $0 1245 36.8 no way of knowing you come to church without an identi$.01 ‐$.99 $.01 ‐ $51.99 643 19.0 fiable donation. The donations shown are those that can be identified through the use of envelopes, checks or online giving. Some of you give very generously and for that we are very grateful. By combining the first two categories, the display shows that 1888 families or 56% of the total give less than one dollar per week to the church. If you consider Incarnation to be your church home, and you fall into that group, you should consider whether that level of support is appropriate.

© Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
