THE CROSS OF JESUS The perception of a cross changed dramatically after Jesus’ crucifixion. Before that event, death on a cross was not only horrible, it was degrading. It was a penalty reserved only for the most wretched of criminals. The word “glory” would not have found its way into the same sentence containing the word “cross.” But all that changed with Jesus. Over time, believers began to venerate and honor the cross. They painted, sculpted, and carved images of it. Many lost their own lives for their association with it. Today our reverence for and relationship with the cross recalls little of the con-

SACRIFICE
Joining in one common act of worship is essential to the proper understanding of the Mass as a sacrifice. There is only one acceptable sacrifice in the New Testament – that of Christ himself. The Mass is a sacrifice because it brings us into contact with that eternal sacrifice of Christ. We share in the sacrifice by joining ourselves to Christ’s act of worship of the Father. There are obviously great depths of meaning linked to our sharing in this sacrificial act of worship. This brings us to the heart of Christianity and the heart of the Eucharist. The death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus is the central fact of history and the central theme of Christian spirituality. Pinellas Hope es un refugio para los desamparados en el Condado de Pinellas, es un ministerio de Misericordia de la diócesis. Nuestra parroquia se ha ofrecido para ayudar a alimentar a estas personas sin hogar en Pinellas Hope el martes, 27 de septiembre y el domingo, 4 de diciembre. EXPOSICIÓN DEL SANTÍSIMO SACRAMENTO Este viernes en nuestra Capilla de 9:00am hasta las 6:15pm y de 7:30pm a 4:30am para luego concluir con la Misa a las 5:00am. 1 de octubre ♦ Santa Teresa de Lisieux Nació en una pequeña cuidad de Francia en el siglo XIX. Desde muy pequeña sintió la vocación a la vida contemplativa. Con permiso especial del Papa, logro entrar en un monasterio de carmelitas antes de la edad permitida. A los nueve años de vida religiosa murió de tuberculosis. Llego a ser santa a base de abandonarse con plena confianza como niña pequeña en las manos de Dios. Es doctora de la Iglesia y patrona de las misiones. ¿En qué momento sentiste la llamada de Dios a servirle? ¿Respondiste inmediatamente?
Sabías que… A los primeros cristianos se les acusó de ser ateos por negarse a dar culto a los dioses.

LA CRUZ DE JESÚS La percepción de una cruz cambió dramáticamente después de la crucifixión de Jesús. Antes de ese suceso, la muerte en una cruz no era tan solo horrible, sino que era degradante. Era un castigo reservado únicamente para los más horrendos criminales. La palabra “gloria” no habría hallado su lugar en una oración que contuviera la palabra “cruz”. Mas todo esto cambió con Jesús. Con el pasar del tiempo, los creyentes comenzaron a venerar y a honrar la Cruz. La pintaron, esculpieron, y tallaron imágenes de la misma. Muchos perdieron su vida por asociarse con ella. Hoy nuestra reverencia y relación con la cruz poco recuerda el desprecio al que originalmente estuvo asociada. Con el curso de los años, es nuestra percepción de la Cruz la que determina cómo seguimos a Jesús. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
