Incarnation Welcomes Visiting Priest Fr. Jose Luis Rosario Nuñez
This week we welcome Father José Luis Rosario Nuñez, who currently serves God's people within the Diocese of La Vega, a province of the Dominican Republic. Fr. Nunez will be serving our parish during the month of September. Fr. Nunez was ordained at the Saint Thomas of Aquine Seminary in October 2005. Some of his appointments include: Vice Principle of the Saint Cura de Ars Seminary; Pastor on September 14, 2009 and assigned to Parroquia del Espiritu Santo (Espiritu Santo Parish) in the small town of
813-885-7861 Arenoso, province of La Vega. He currently serves 20 communities within his parish area and has had the help of two ordained Deacons since the beginning of 2011. The area under his spiritual guidance has a population of 3,200 catholic families (an average of 5 children per family). The majority of families have limited resources and live off of small agricultural activities. Fr. Jose Luis has established and maintained several lay ministries in the parish, including youth groups, the Emmaus ministry, couples group, liturgy classes, and others. He is a 1st order Knight of Columbus.
“We believe there is no true growth as a catholic if we don’t respond to those around us who are in need of support” .
Recently our pastor, Father Michael and Bishop Antonio Camilo of the Diocese of La Vega had conversations about Incarnation adopting a parish in the Diocese of La Vega. Father Michael believes that it would be a great opportunity for our Incarnation Community to connect to brethren who are very far in another geographical location yet very near in the heart of One God, One Church, and One Spirit. “We believe there is no true growth as a catholic if we don’t respond to those around us who are in need of support.” explains Fr. Michael. You will have an opportunity to meet Fr. Nunez as he will be visiting with several groups in our parish; will be celebrating Masses and will be giving a parish wide presentation on our new sister mission at the end of the month. When you meet him, help us give him a warm Incarnation welcome!
You are hereby invited to the Jubilee Mass of Our Lady of Charity celebrating 400 years of her appearance in the Bay of Nipe in Cuba. The Mass will take place on Saturday September 8 at 7:00 PM at Incarnation Church. It will be officiated by Bishop Robert Lynch and homilist will be Father Rodolfo Lamas of the Archdiocese of San Juan Puerto Rico. Fr. Lamas is a Cuban priest from the Camaguey Province and has been working in Puerto Rico since 1992. Preceding the Mass, Bishop Lynch will be blessing the newly renovated Shrine.
Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls. — James 1:21b DOERS OF THE WORD The second reading for today begins a five-week series of selections from James, a letter that is classified among the so-called “catholic” (or universal) epistles because they are addressed to a general audience rather than to one particular community. Today’s text offers important advice for Christians of every generation. God is first cited as the author of all gifts, and in particular, reference is made to the gift of baptism by which we have been made the “first fruits” of the new creation. What follows is advice based on a very Jewish understanding of the “word” as an active force, operative in the world. We are reminded that unless we, too, become “doers” of the word, our claim to faith is empty. Today and in subsequent weeks the author reminds us that it is equally important to do the “works” of love, for example, by caring for the “orphans and widows in their affliction.” Copyright © J. S. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Labor Day originated in 1882 in New York City under the aegis of the Knights of Labor. Congress made it a legal holiday in 1894. Observing it this week gives us a good opportunity to reflect on the Catholic Church’s social teachings for the last century or so. On May 15, 1891, Pope Leo XIII issued the encyclical Rerum Novarum on the condition of the working classes and labor. In doing so, he initiated a century in which Catholic teaching became more and more involved in the social issues of the day. Unfortunately relegated to the shadows while the bright lights of controversy shine on other issues, Catholic social teaching remains largely unknown to many Catholics. It is the Catholic Church that championed such notions as a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work, and continues to uphold the dignity of the human person against attacks from governments and corporations. Nearly every pope since Leo XIII has issued teachings on the subject. Take some time this Labor Day to familiarize yourself with some aspect of the Church’s social teachings. In doing so, you will be taking responsibility as a member of the Body of Christ to commit yourself to the care of your neighbor. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
