Year of Consecrated Life In calling for the Year of Consecrated Life, Pope Francis articulated three goals: to look to the past with gratitude, to live the present with passion, and finally, to embrace the future with hope. During the Year of Consecrated Life, the Pope invites religious to renew their vocation and to fill their lives with joy and passion, so that the increase in loving activity is a continuous process. “Love is never finished and complete; throughout life it changes and matures, and thus remains faithful to itself.” Here in the Diocese of St. Petersburg, activities of the Year call religious to look back at the blessings of the past but not to stop there. As grateful as we are for the history of consecrated life, we must look to the future and listen to what God is saying to the Church today and implement ever more fully the essential aspects of our consecrated life. We must live our three vows of poverty, chastity and obedience with the Joy that is visible to those around us, and to ourselves. Plan now to participate in the diocesan celebration that will take place on October 31, 2015, at the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle. And, watch this site for news of other activities throughout this blessed time, right until the closing of the Year on Feb. 2, 2016. As Pope Francis has said, “Consecrated men and women live out their fidelity, giving a reason for the joy that lives in them. So they become splendid witnesses, effective proclaimers, companions and neighbors for the women and men with whom they share a common history and who want to find their Father’s house in the Church.”
A Home for the Wounded Heart Jesus set a high standard for chastity, asking his followers to live differently from the rest of the world. Jesus taught things about sexuality and marriage which we may find difficult to accept and live, both in ancient times and today. But Jesus asked us to live sacrificially for good reason. Jesus tells us the truth about how to love, and so if we respect marriage vows, practice self-control, and treat each other chastely, communion and freedom of spirit will dawn in our hearts and in our communities. Of course, we all stumble and sin, hurting ourselves and others in the process. Sin causes profound pain in family life. That is why Pope Francis once famously likened the Church to “a field hospital after battle.” Pope Benedict called each parish a “family of families.” In our ordinary parish life, each of us fulfills our mission when we bear one another’s burdens and help each other heal the wounds. No one should be lonely or forgotten in a parish. The Church is a family of those who have encountered Jesus, who confess that he is Lord, who desire his grace to shape their lives, and so help each other respond to him. Jesus’s way enables patience, forgiveness, and trust, so that we can convert and renew our hearts in ways that would otherwise seem impossible. Whatever controversies might arise in our culture, whatever others might do or fail to do, Jesus and his Sacraments are always with us, and love is always our mission. —Office for the New Evangelization, Archdiocese of Philadelphia

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 6, 2015
PRIVATE OR PUBLIC?
READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Col 1:24 — 2:3; Ps 62:6-7, 9; Lk 6:6-11, or, for Labor Day, any readings from the Mass “For the Blessing of Human Labor,” nos. 907-911 Tuesday: Mi 5:1-4a or Rom 8:28-30; Ps 13:6 Mt 1:1-16, 18-23 Wednesday: Col 3:1-11; Ps 145:2-3, 10-13ab; Lk 6:20-26 Thursday: Col 3:12-17; Ps 150:1b-6; Lk 6:27-38 Friday: 1 Tm 1:1-2, 12-14; Ps 16:1b-2a, 5, 7-8, 11; Lk 6:39-42 Saturday: 1 Tm 1:15-17; Ps 113:1b-7; Lk 6:43-49 Sunday: Is 50:5-9a; Ps 116:1-6, 8-9; Jas 2:14-18; Mk 8:27-35
This particular miracle story is unique to Mark’s Gospel, and is unusual in its healing of two ailments. Another detail we might overlook is that Jesus takes the man off in private to perform the healing. We might think that, especially as a foreigner in an unfriendly place, Jesus might want to make a public display of his power. But, consistent with what precedes the miracle, his manifestation of the reign of God (described in Isaiah) takes place in private, as have his explanations of parables to his disciples. Chances are, for most of us the day-today things we do in witness to the gospel happen in private, with only a few people around. Some of us might think that, since we don’t heal the sick miraculously or don’t have a large public forum at our disposal, we are not called upon to do “all things well” (Mark 7:37) as disciples. Today Jesus shows us differently, and we learn that the reign of God, even when it happens in private, cannot help but make its way into the world. Church of the Incarnation
Escucha a Dios y escúchate a ti mismo.
