MASS SCHEDULE Monday through Friday: 7:00am & 8:30am Saturday: 8:30am & 4:30pm (Vigil)
SERVANT Sometimes the hour and the person meet. Sometimes, when a task or mission is set upon our shoulders, we know we must meet our responsibilities and we are ready. These are heady and invigorating times. The first reading and the Gospel proclamation today are intimate glimpses of a commencement, an inauguration of a challenging future. In both readings, a sense of gravity prevails. The first reading is from the mysterious Servant Songs from the book of Isaiah. The person is steadfast and brave. His courage and bravery are not located in his stout heart, but in God. We are reminded, “The Lord GOD opens my ear that I may hear” (Isaiah 50:4), so the servant understands the mission. And twice, “The Lord GOD is my help” (50:7, 9), so that the servant can endure the coming struggle. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LETTING GOD WORK IN US This may sound hard, but it’s not hard, it’s impossible! Jesuit Father John Govan says that we think we are able and must do all this ourselves, but we forget that God is doing the work in us, and for God, nothing is impossible. In Isaiah, the Suffering Servant listens to God’s word, day after day, and is able to bear all suffering for the sake of obedience to that word. The psalm teaches that God also listens to us when we call, and saves us from sin and death.
EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Every 1st Friday following the 8:30 am Mass until 6:15pm
As our faith deepens day by day, so does our attentiveness to the word of God, and our desire grows to let God work in us for the fulfillment of God’s own will for the world.

Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Faith or Works? Sometimes we think the argument of faith vs. works started with the Reformation. But the second reading shows that it was already being debated in New Testament times. The simplified version of the debate has the Reformers saying that faith alone is all we need to be saved, while the Catholic side says we have to do good to be saved. Actually, they are both right. The idea of works being necessary for salvation probably goes back to the Old Covenant emphasis on the law and the commandments. They believed that their religious practices set them apart from the pagans around them. Then Jesus came to show that only God is Holy. Our holiness comes from loving God and loving others. Because Jesus is the Son of God, he is the best way to know God. So believing in Jesus is not just believing that he exists. We believe in a Person who loves us and showed us that God is our Father. He gives us life and protects us; he supports us and also lets us learn from our mistakes. Then he forgives us, showing that he loves us even when we turn away from him. So if we truly believe in Jesus we follow his commandment of love, because we love him so much we want to be just like him. We help others, not to make us look good, but to show them how good God is. So you cannot truly believe in Jesus without wanting to help others to know and love him too. Jesus’ way of saying that in today’s gospel was to take up our cross and follow him. That is truly a work of faith. —Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THE CROSS TO BEAR If you bear the cross gladly, it will bear you. —Thomas à Kempis
Church of the Incarnation
