MASS SCHEDULE

Today’s feast seem like it should be celebrated in Holy Week. Didn’t we observe that on Good Friday? Perhaps the Church is reminding us that the cross of Jesus’ death is a powerful sign of God’s love for sinners—a sign that we don’t have to wait for Lent to seek that forgiveness, or even to offer it to others. Why should we forgive those who hurt us? The Gospel this Sunday gives us a couple of good reasons. Since God did not send Jesus “into the world to condemn the world” (John 3:17), we cannot condemn others. Does that mean we have to let someone hurt us over and over? No, it is possible to forgive someone and also prevent them from hurting us, if we do it with love. Since forgiveness is part of love, it is also part of tough love. That is why the cross is such a powerful symbol. It challenges us to accept suffering for Jesus’ sake. It reminds us that sometimes our cross is simply forgiving someone rather than hurting them back or hating them. If Jesus gave his life to forgive us, how willing are we to spread that forgiveness around? Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Sunday: 7:30am, 9:00am, 10:30am (signed),

On this date in 335 two churches and a shrine erected by Constantine over the empty grave of Jesus and over the place of the crucifixion were dedicated. After these were destroyed by the Persians in 614, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which still stands, was erected by the Crusaders in 1149. Today also commemorates the event that led to the building of the churches dedicated in 335: the discovery of the “true cross” by St. Helena, Constantine’s mother, in 326.

According to one legend, St. Helena traveled to Jerusalem on pilgrimage, in search of the true cross. Workers she hired dug through a pagan temple that had been erected on the site of the Crucifixion by Hadrian and found three crosses. A dying woman was brought in, and touched by each cross in succession, the last of which healed her. Helena ordered that this cross be divided in three parts, one to be kept in Jerusalem and the other two to be sent to Constantinople and Rome. The pieces in Jerusalem and Constantinople were ultimately lost. Slivers were taken from the portion that went to Rome until eventually it was scattered around the world. Of course, the significance of the true cross lies not in the wood itself but in the burden that it bore. As a faithful Christian, what crosses do you accept in your life today? —Rev. WE ARE CALLED TO BEAR WITNESS TO THE CROSS When we “bear witness to the cross” we show the world the truth of Jesus’ message. We are called to imitate Jesus—his attitudes and his actions. Jesus’ attitude was that he “did not regard equality with God something to be grasped” (Philippians 2:6). His action was that he emptied himself, “becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross” (2:8). This is surely a difficult path to follow. But the ones who follow it find that it brings great joy. And even our ordinary experience can teach us that when we cease to “grasp” at something we thought we had to have, life suddenly becomes easier. This is a mystery, and we struggle to understand it. But, more important even than understanding, we are called to live the mystery in our daily attitudes and actions. In living it, we bear witness to the truth of the cross before others.

P. Jairo 9|
