TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the early years of the church, most people never availed themselves of once-in-a-lifetime penance. Yet penitents were highly visible. They wore distinctive garments or chains, and they were relegated to special zones in the church. They might be dismissed from the Sunday assembly after the Word, forbidden to join in the Prayer of the Faithful or the Eucharist. This dismissal was done with great affection and tenderness as the bishop laid his hands on the heads of the sinners. During Lent almost everyone would identify with penitents by clothing, insignia, or by following the penitents’ regular diet. Rather than sit in judgment over them, the church desired to intercede for them before the Lord. “Let Mother Church weep for you and wash away your sins with her tears,” said St. Ambrose to his penitents in Milan. Ambrose liked to think of them as Jonah in the whale, meditating on his errors. In a letter to his sister he said that Jonah is also a sign of Christ in the tomb, and so he had great faith in the penitents’ future proclamation of the Resurrection with their reclaimed status in the assembly. —Rev. SEEK THE LORD In today’s opening reading, Isaiah urges us to “seek the LORD” who is “near” and can be “found” (Isaiah 55:6). Then Isaiah says God’s ways are as high above our ways “as the heavens are above the earth” (Isaiah 55:9). So we search, not because God is hiding, but because our tendencies are so different from God’s ways that we get lost.

How are God’s ways so high above our ways? The example Isaiah gives is that God’s way is to be “generous in forgiving” (Isaiah 55:7). And our way? We try to be “fair.” You hurt me, so then I hurt you back, just as hard. Then, of course, you . . . . And on it goes.

Domingo 21 de Septiembre. Domingo 25 del Tiempo Ordinario Reflexionando la Palabra de Dios Somos parte de la Iglesia y, por eso, tenemos que asumir nuestra responsabilidad en ella. De ahí, la invitación del Señor: Vayan también ustedes a mi viña. ¿Por qué no asumimos esa responsabilidad? Es la forma como Dios nos invita a trabajar: Él quiere contar con nosotros y nos convierte en sus colaboradores, en protagonistas de la historia de la salvación. La respuesta depende de nosotros. Saberse necesario para Dios, sin duda nos puede impresionar. Pero, a la misma vez, puede y debe estimularnos en nuestra corresponsabilidad. Consiste en todo lo bueno que podamos hacer y que lo que hagamos será siempre para bien y no para mal. Lo bueno que hacemos tiene un valor infinito y hasta salvador en las manos de Dios; pero lo que no hagamos tendrá igualmente una dimensión que no podrá dejarnos tranquilos. La salvación se nos regala, y para que sea eficaz, deberá ser aceptada por nosotros. Esa salvación Dios la hace llegar a los demás ayudándose de nuestra mediación. Si la rechazamos, muchos no la recibirán. "Salió al amanecer, a media mañana, al atardecer". Cada uno tiene que ofrecer lo que puede y tiene. Que se noten nuestras posibilidades. Estas no se miden por haber trabajado todo el día o parte de él. Es cuestión de trabajar, lo que tengamos que hacer. Porque, nosotros no somos los que salvamos, sino Dios. En sus manos, somos instrumentos, colaboradores, ayudantes. Y hay trabajo para todos. Ninguna actividad vale más ni es más importante que la otra. Donde Dios te haya puesto, cuando Dios te lo pida, pero siempre con generosidad. Esta será la que de valor a tu aportación. "¿Acaso tienes envidia porque yo soy bueno?" Si el Señor no establece diferencias, ¿por qué las establecemos nosotros con los demás, con los otros grupos? Nadie trabaja en lo suyo. Todos, en la Iglesia, somos trabajadores por cuenta ajena. Trabajamos en la viña del Señor. En la misma viña. Una viña que no es nuestra. Y una viña que no es diferente. Por eso, buscar lo nuestro, defender nuestra parcela, excluir a los demás significa no haber entendido nada, ni la invitación que el Señor nos ha hecho. Nunca es tarde para trabajar para Dios y su reino, comencemos hoy mismo, trabajando por la felicidad y la armonía de la familia, comprendiendo a los demás, haciendo con esmero el trabajo diario, corrigiendo nuestros defectos, y entre otras tantas cosas colaborando en nuestra comunidad, la Viña del Señor, trabajando unidos, en fraternidad construyendo el Reino de Dios. Que Dios nos bendiga y nos de la gracia de atender a su llamado.
Si es el "Amén" de la comunión, significa "Así es". Por tanto cuando el sacerdote dice: "El cuerpo de Cristo" el que comulga debe decir "Amén" y darle a este "Amén" este significado: "Así es", "es ciertamente el Cuerpo de Cristo", "tengo por verdadero lo que acabo de recibir". Equivale a un verdadero acto de fe.

¿Qué ha prometido Jesucristo a los que comulgan? Les ha prometido la vida eterna: "El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre tiene la vida eterna y Yo le resucitaré en el último día" (Jn. 6, 54). ¿Qué dice San Pablo de la comunión indigna? "Quien come el pan y bebe el cáliz del Señor indignamente, será reo del cuerpo y de la sangre del Señor... pues el que sin discernir come y bebe el cuerpo del Señor, come y bebe su condenación" (1Cor. 11, 27-29). Significado de la palabra "Amén" La palabra "Amén" es una palabra hebrea que queda sin traducir en todas las lenguas y tiene dos significados. Si es al final del Padrenuestro u otras oraciones significa: "Así sea", "así lo deseo", "así se cumpla".

Este año la misa se celebrará en honor de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Patrona de los países de Belize y México y Emperatriz de las Américas. ¡Durante este tiempo de resurrección y de renovación en la vida de la Iglesia, continuemos nuestro legado de fe para las generaciones futuras! Somos un pueblo que cree, ama y está dispuesto a cumplir con nuestro compromiso bautismal de evangelizar al mundo entero. Continuemos orando por nuestro Papa Pancho y pidámosle a la Virgen su protección y guía! Inviten a todos a participar de esta Misa tan especial.

Lo que pasa, por supuesto, es que todos esos trabajadores de que habla Jesús, especialmente los que llegaron muy tarde, reciben el mismo pago al terminar su labor, que el pobre José que ha estado recogiendo o podando o cavando desde el amanecer. ¿Verdad que no es justo? ¡Absolutamente! Quizás nosotros también habríamos murmurado. Pero Isaías no dice: “Pues sus proyectos no son los míos y mis caminos no son los mismos de ustedes.”

Todos somos llamados a trabajar para el Señor, pero cada uno lo hace a su manera. “Labor fructífera,” la llama Pablo, tenga o no tenga que ver con uvas. De modo que no importa si eres agricultor o neurocirujano, estudiante o maestro, predicador o la persona en la última banca. No importa cómo interpretemos la llamada de Dios o cuáles sean nuestras circunstancias específicas, seamos, como el apóstol Pablo, siempre fieles a nuestro verdadero llamado –vivir y morir en Cristo– y conduzcámonos en forma apropiada y meritoria.
