Stewardship Reflection Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of September 21/22, 2013 In Jesus’ parable of the Unjust Steward, we encounter a financial man- ager who has wasted his master’s wealth and faces dismissal from his position. To overcome the crisis confronting him, the steward reduces some very considerable debts owed by poor neighbors to his master in order to help them out. Though the steward has sinned against God and his master by squandering what belongs to someone else, both the prudent way in which he goes about resolving the crisis coupled with relieving people who are in need can be seen as a way to better steward the gifts entrusted to us by God. Although good stewards today acknowledge that they may never use their Godgiven gifts in a way that completely conforms to the demands of the Gospel, a commitment to using their gifts with prudence and for the purpose of helping their neighbors wins God’s favor. Gratitude: A Virtue which Unlocks Fullness of Life Each of us has so much to be grateful for. The challenge in our society is to step outside of our own little worlds from time to time, to see just how abundantly blessed we are. When we get stuck in our own little worlds, comparing ourselves to what we see around us, and in the media, we are in a very dangerous place. By remaining in this cocoon, we run the risk of being perpetually dissatisfied and un-grateful. The virtue of gratitude has the power to change the way we think about whom we are, and all that we possess. “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more.” (Melody Beattie) Good stewards develop the virtue of gratitude, as with all virtue, through their daily habits. The habit of being grateful takes some effort on our part – we must be aware of what we think about every day. When you think about it, you are abundantly blessed compared to so many in the world who have so little.
An attitude of gratitude is central to the stewardship way of life. You will possess this virtue when you have the ability to be grateful, even when you don’t feel like it. In fact, next time you feel like complaining about something, think of something you are grateful for, and any negative thinking will vanish. That’s the power of gratitude. Having developed a daily disposition of gratitude, the question then becomes to whom are you grateful? St. Paul gives us some direction here, “Didn’t God give you everything you have? Well, then how can you boast, as if what you have were not a gift?” (1 Corinthians 4:7) At the heart of authentic stewardship, you will always find an overwhelming sense of gratitude to God. Obligation and duty do motivate the Christian Steward to a certain degree; it is the virtue of gratitude that moves us into the realm of genuine and joyful generosity. An attitude of gratitude is central to the stewardship way of life. Moreover, gratitude is the one virtue we must possess to hold all the others. “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others.” Cicero Copyright 2013, © International Catholic Stewardship Council. Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 22, 2013 God . . . wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth. — 1 Timothy 2:4 PRIORITIES In the first reading, the prophet Amos rages against all those whose greed is so great that they would close their eyes and hearts to the needs of the poor among them. To make a buck is one thing, Amos is saying. To make it on the backs of the helpless is quite another. In the second reading, Paul reminds us of our charge and duty to pray. He issues a call to more expansive prayer--prayer that should mark the daily life of Christians. In the Gospel, Jesus describes the wholehearted effort of a crafty servant who sees "downsizing" heading his way. Jesus finds him a marvel and puzzles over why such cleverness is limited to the world of commerce. Jesus wonders why those who seek a "position" in the reign of God lack such wit and wherewithal. Vigésimo Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 22 de septiembre de 2013 Dios . . .
¿A quién devolverlo?
