Seek Virtue

In today's first reading, Amos condemns a selfabsorbed people and their morally corrupt behavior and attitudes, which he warns will bring devastation. In the Gos-

pel, the wealthy man is not given a name; he is simply the epitome of greed and irresponsibility. His lack of caring has created a gulf between him and the beggar Lazarus that not even Abraham can bridge. In his letter to Timothy, a young bishop in the small Resurrection community of Ephesus, Paul exhorts this leader to seek virtues such as integrity, faith, and steadfastness with great gentleness. Paul also asks Timothy to keep in mind the future life with God who "dwells in unapproachable light." This is the blessedness of all those who, like Lazarus, were once poor but who are now rich. Pope Francis calls Catholics to be a “Little Poorer” Pope Francis has offered the Church a breath of fresh air, not because he has advocated new or revolutionary beliefs or actions, but because he has restated time-honored truths in simple, friendly, down-to-earth ways. Much of his statements have focused on the issue of the poor and our relationship to them. A June 7 Vatican Press Release revealed one such statement by the Holy Father: “Poverty in the world is a scandal. In a world where there is so much wealth, so many resources to feed everyone, it is unfathomable that there are so many hungry children, that there are so many children without an education, so many poor persons. Poverty today is a cry. We all have to think if we can become a little poorer, all of us have to do this. How can I become a little poorer in order to be like Jesus, who was the poor Teacher?” For those who seek a deeper relationship with the Lord, the Holy Father’s words offer a thought-provoking challenge notwithstanding his kind, soft-spoken delivery. Christian stewards recognize Jesus’ teaching in that statement: For whom much is given, much is expected. This can be a hard gospel teaching to embrace. In that same June 7 address, the Pope went on to express something he has lived out in his life among the poor in Latin America: “Look,” he said, “You can’t speak of poverty without having experience with the poor. You can’t speak of poverty in the abstract: that doesn’t exist. These are challenging questions to ask ourselves: How can we become a little poorer in our lives? How do we come face-to-face with the poor?

Stewardship Reflection In today’s gospel Jesus offers a warning about living selfishly in his parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. The Rich Man holds sumptuous feasts and dresses in fine clothes. But despite his affluence he does nothing to relieve the painful hunger and debilitating condition of his neighbor Lazarus. He neglects to love his neighbor as he loves himself and is sent to hell for his lifestyle and desire for self-gratification. The Rich Man represents those who spend their money on their own personal pleasures with no regard for sharing their material possessions with the poor and needy in their own neighborhood. Good stewards realize the practical implications of not only loving God, but loving their neighbor as they would love themselves. Who are the less fortunate in our neighborhood? Do we share a portion of our own blessings with them? Copyright 2013, © International Catholic Stewardship Council. All rights reserved
