Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 16, 2011 “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God.” — Matthew 22:21 IN GOD ALONE Isaiah speaks to us today of Cyrus, King of Persia, anointed by the Lord. God calls Cyrus by name and leads him in service to the Israelites. In this passage we hear that it is the Lord who gives Cyrus his title, who arms him against his enemies, and who opens doors and unbars gates before him. And God does all of this so that the people will know that “I am the LORD,” and that “there is none besides me” (Isaiah 45:6). Paul opens his letter with essentially the same notion—that in God alone we find our grace and peace. Paul also gives thanks to God on our behalf, calling to mind our work of faith, hope, and love. And in the familiar Gospel reading, Jesus tells the Pharisees to give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
ONLY SAY THE WORD — The bread is broken, the banquet is prepared, and now we are invited to the feast. Once more the priest holds the host, now broken, for us to see, and invites us to behold the one “who takes away the sins of the world.” Truly blessed and happy are those invited to this meal, which is a foretaste of the heavenly banquet, the supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:19). We respond to this invitation with a prayer to the Lord: we acknowledge that we are not worthy, but at the same time we are confident that the One who comes to us can heal us, body and soul. This prayer echoes the story of the centurion in Luke’s Gospel. The centurion, a Gentile, asks healing for his servant, but does not consider himself worthy to have Jesus come under his roof—he believes that Jesus can heal his servant with a word, without even seeing him. Jesus is amazed at his faith. It is the same for us. We believe that Jesus speaks to us, comes to us, dwells with us, even though we neither hear his voice nor see his face. —Corinna Laughlin, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
ONE SUNDAY FOR THE WHOLE WORLD ‐ Next Sunday, Pope Benedict XVI calls every Catholic in the world to celebrate our voca on to be missionary. It’s World Mission Sunday!
As Catholics around the world — here at home and in the Missions — gather at the Eucharist around the table of the Lord, we are to pray for the Church’s worldwide missionary work. We pray for those awai ng the “Good News” of our Lord’s great love for us and for the missionaries who offer the poor and suffering the light of Christ. And we are to offer financial help through the Society for the Propaga on of the Faith for more than 1,150 dioceses in Asia, Africa, La n America and the Pacific Islands. Page 2

Liturgical Bits & Bytes
Communion Dialogue The dialog—“The Body (or Blood) of Christ,” and “Amen”— between the minister and the person receiving is an essential part of the Rite of Communion. Only after saying: “Amen!” do you then extend your tongue or your hands to receive the host. It is our way of saying, “Yes, I believe that this is the Body of Christ” or “Yes, I believe that this wine is the Blood of Christ". Two practical notes: please do not try to take the host with your fingers; and, if you wish to receive from the cup, you need to take the cup from the minister with both hands, take a sip and then return the cup to the minister.

Sinceramente suyo en Cristo Jesús, Very Rev.
