November 3, 2013 Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time ALL-POWERFUL YET CARING GOD It used to be that when I thought, “Old Testament,” I thought of narratives written many centuries before Christ. Then I learned that today’s passage from the book of Wisdom was written less than one hundred years before Jesus came along. These words were so contemporaneous with Jesus that he himself conceivably could have written or spoken them. He certainly lived them. The Wisdom reading is a poetic prayer celebrating a Creator-God before whom the universe is like a grain of sand, yet who is still lovingly concerned with every individual. This is the God whom Jesus reveals, with unlimited power over all creation, yet watching out for sinners climbing trees. Zacchaeus was no ordinary tax collector, but the chief tax collector, and “a wealthy man.” But he wasn’t too proud to run ahead and clamber up into a sycamore tree just to get a glimpse of Jesus. Book of the dead by Paul Turner Some parishes display a book of the names of the dead. The book keeps an informal record of members who have died and can be put on public view to help the living remember the dead. The Catholic Church requires every parish to maintain a register of deaths. After each funeral, the name of the deceased is to be inscribed in this parish register. A secretary usually enters the data, but the pastor is ultimately responsible. This register is usually kept in the parish office, where it serves as a reference book. Every parish is obliged to keep one. But some parishes display a second book of the dead. There is no requirement for it, but some use one. A book of the dead usually contains numerous blank pages bound by an ornate cover, decorated with Christian art, and displayed on a handsome table or desk. In some parishes, a member of the family is invited to inscribe the name of the deceased in the book. Other pertinent information may be kept – for example, the date of death, the date of the funeral, and/or the name of the cemetery where the remains can be found. The book may be displayed near the door of the church or in a side chapel. Some parishes leave the book on permanent display. Others bring it out for occasions like a wake, a funeral, All Souls Day, or throughout the month of November. Carefully maintained and properly displayed, a book of the dead reminds the living of the people they loved and lost. It records names of the body of Christ and inspires prayer for their eternal rest.

Domingo 31 Tiempo Ordinario Reflexionando la Palabra de Dios Nos dice el evangelio que un hombre llamado Zaqueo, jefe de publicanos y rico trataba de distinguir quién era Jesús. Zaqueo era rico y hombre de notable prestigio, cosa que no le impedía tener serias y eficaces inquietudes espirituales. Tenía necesidad de saber quién era aquel Jesús que anunciaba el reino de Dios, y estaba dispuesto a llevar a cabo cuanto fuera necesario, para iluminar el embrollo que llevaba dentro y compararlo con los rumores que le habían llegado, sobre la doctrina liberadora de aquel joven predicador de Galilea. Porque ser rico y tener prestigio no había sido suficiente hasta entonces para dar sentido a su vida. Conocía los escritos de los profetas, por los que estaba casi seguro que había algo más profundo por lo que valía la pena apostar. La respuesta de Dios no se demora para los que buscan con sinceridad y fervor, ni se hizo esperar en el caso de Zaqueo: Jesús, al llegar a aquel sitio, levantó los ojos y dijo: ‘Zaqueo, baja en seguida, porque hoy tengo que alojarme en tu casa’. Jesús se le manifestó claramente, y en el interior de aquel inesperado anfitrión brilló la luz. Entendió perfectamente el mensaje y se dispuso a cambiar radicalmente de vida. Nuestras decepciones, frecuentemente, provienen del hecho de pretender cosechar el fruto sin haber cultivado el árbol. Pretendemos que Dios se nos manifieste con más claridad, sin haber puesto el esfuerzo de buscarlo. Nos acostumbramos con excesiva facilidad a vivir la rutina diaria, procurando evitar toda inquietud y preocupación. Conocemos unos cuantos datos sobre Jesús –le conocemos por fuera– sin que nos planteemos la necesidad de una relación personal íntima con Él por medio de la oración, la apertura del corazón y el deseo íntimo. La pereza y el apego excesivo a la comodidad nos impiden hacernos más preguntas y por lo tanto, también, a buscar con interés nuevas respuestas. Y, mucho menos todavía estamos dispuestos a dar la mitad de lo que sea para tener derecho a las riquezas y compensaciones interiores que nos vendrían naturalmente de la intimidad con Jesús. Ni tan siquiera estamos dispuestos, probablemente, a modificar el ritmo de nuestra vida para escuchar y hacerle caso a Jesús, que nos dice: Baja en seguida, porque hoy tengo que alojarme en tu casa. Quien nada busca, nada encontrará y, a quien nada espera, nada nuevo le puede sobrevenir, puesto que, el futuro es de los que desean y esperan.

Legión de María Praesídium Nuestra Señora de la Luz La Legión de María es un asociación de hombres y mujeres católicos quienes con el permiso de la iglesia bajo la guía poderosa de María Inmaculada han formado una legión que esta perpetuamente apoyada por la iglesia. Visitamos enfermos en sus hogares, en asilos y hospitales. Acompañamos en funerales y novenarios para difuntos, entre otras actividades espirituales. Es mi origen y mi hogar y voy a seguir lanzando gotitas de amor, aunque no lo pueda apagar, y aunque me muera en el intento". Los otros animales entendieron lo que hacía la pequeña ave y le ayudaron a apagar el incendio. Cada gotita de agua apacigua un incendio. Cada acción que con amor y entusiasmo emprendemos, un mejor mañana será su reflejo. No subestimes las gotas porque millones de ellas forman un océano. Todo acto que con amor realizamos, regresa a nosotros multiplicado.

3 de noviembre de 2013 TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE No todas las patronas latinoamericanas tienen origines entre milagros y visiones. Algunas nacen de la devoción mariana del Pueblo de Dios. Tal es el caso con la Virgen de los Treinta y Tres. En 1962, el Papa Juan XXIII la nombró Patrona de Uruguay y así confirmó oficialmente lo que el Pueblo de Dios ya había hecho desde el 1825. Esta pequeña imagen de 36 centímetros lleva sobre su cabeza una corona desproporcionadamente grande, regalo de un general militar y símbolo de la devoción del pueblo. También lleva su curioso nombre en honor a su papel en la Independencia de Uruguay antiguamente llamada la Provincia Oriental. Los treinta y tres orientales que comandaron la guerra de liberación encomendaron sus esfuerzos delante esta imagen de origen jesuita. El siglo pasado el pueblo uruguayo comenzó ha patrocinar peregrinajes en honor de su patrona. Eventualmente en 1945 el obispo tuvo la gran idea de llevar la imagen en peregrinación al pueblo. Desde entonces se ha ido desarrollando esta bella costumbre que lleva María al Pueblo cada segundo domingo de noviembre entre homenajes de caballadas, desfiles y cantos. — Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
