TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For several weeks, we have considered penance as a sacrament of forgiveness, and yet there are two other sacraments in this category. The first, of course, is the Eucharist itself. The other is the sacrament of the sick, long associated with penance. The Letter of James sets out the deep tradition for caring for the sick: sending for the priests, who will pray and lay their hands on the sick ones, anointing them with oil, and giving them forgiveness. Long before other rites of penance developed, the sacrament of the sick was therefore a profound experience of forgiveness. Jesus often healed the sick, nearly always as a visible sign of forgiveness of sin. The tradition didn’t unfold smoothly, however, and within a few centuries the oil of the sick was taken home to be applied by caregivers as a salve, or even to be drunk as a medicine. As early as the second century, bishops were therefore urging that priests should be the ones to visit those separated by illness from the Sunday assembly. Thus the practice of consigning the Eucharist and the oil of the sick to the non-ordained faithful to bring home was relatively short-lived. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica In all three of today’s readings, the Temple or an image of the Temple is dominant. Ezekiel speaks of streams of living water flowing out from the Temple, watering the desert, bringing life to all living things, offering fresh healing to God’s people.

Paul reminds the Corinthians that their faith rests upon the firmest of foundations, Christ himself. More than that, Paul reveals that those who follow Christ are themselves temples, temples of the Holy Spirit. That is, God dwells not only with them but in them as well.

For the Jews of Jesus’ time, the Temple had come to be identified with the presence of God and the only place where authentic worship of God took place. Jesus had a different perception. Jesus identified himself not with the Temple, but as the temple. By so doing, Jesus indicated a drastic shift in what it means to worship God, to be in God’s presence. Jesus replaced a place as the focus of prayer with a person—himself.

Domingo 9 de Noviembre. Dedicación de la Basílica de Letrán Reflexionando la Palabra de Dios El templo es un lugar de encuentro del hombre con Dios y es tan antiguo como el hombre. El hombre necesita colectiva y materialmente tener un lugar donde acercarse a Dios, un lugar en el que su Dios reciba culto y donde el hombre pueda, pacífica y serenamente hablar con Él. Cada religión tiene sus lugares sagrados, donde la presencia de Dios se hace más tangible y el contacto con Él es más asequible. Para el cristiano no es cuestión de lugares materiales; el gran santuario es Jesucristo: Él es la presencia de Dios; a través de Él entramos en contacto con el Padre. El Templo de Dios es santo; ese templo somos nosotros. El cristianismo no es una religión de cosas sagradas sino de personas que buscan la santidad. Dios se manifiesta en el hombre Jesús de Nazaret y en los creyentes que constituimos la Iglesia: edificio construido por Dios sobre el cimiento que es Jesucristo, ensanchamiento del Cuerpo de Cristo que anima y penetra el mismo Espíritu de Dios que conduce a Jesús a lo largo de su vida y que, una vez resucitado, Él nos envía como primicia, como una nueva creación. Si alguno profana, destruye el templo de Dios, Dios lo destruirá a Él; porque el templo de Dios es santo, es sagrado. La palabra profanación la asociamos aún con demasiada frecuencia a las cosas sagradas (un templo, una imagen, un altar, una capilla, las especies eucarísticas). Pablo la aplica a los cristianos y a las comunidades de fe: Mire cada uno cómo construye. Profanamos el templo de Dios cuando, sobre el cimiento que es Jesucristo, ponemos materiales que no encajan y que desvirtúan la atención hacia aspectos, valores, intereses que no son los de la vida de Jesús de Nazaret. Cada comunidad está llamada a examinarse sobre sus materiales preferidos, su estructura, el rostro y la imagen que ofrece. Cada cristiano y cada comunidad cristiana son una mediación necesaria para ir a Jesús y al Padre. De ahí su grandeza y también su responsabilidad. Cada comunidad de fe, ¿es de veras el templo de Dios, el cuerpo de Cristo, el lugar donde podemos reconocer a Jesucristo y, por Él, hallar al Padre? La respuesta, podemos aplicarla a nuestras idas al templo. Si en el recorrido hacia ese templo; es decir, en nuestra vida diaria, ésa que empieza cada mañana con el trabajo, con la convivencia, con la sonrisa, con la paciencia, con la humildad, con la caridad, con la atención al otro, con el vencimiento del orgullo y de la soberbia, de la calumnia y de la murmuración, de la envidia y de la avaricia; en esa vida diaria en la que existen los negocios sucios y los limpios, la familia que exige y que da, el amor que dignifica; en esa vida diaria de la injusticia y de la bondad, del perdón y del odio. Si en esa vida diaria no hemos encontrado a Dios y hemos sido capaces de irlo manifestando siquiera un poco, no lo encontraremos en un templo por muy bello y espléndido que allí sea su culto. ¿No han oído alguna vez esta frase: ¡para eso vas tanto a la iglesia!, y ¿han pensado en lo que quiere decir? Pues hoy es un día para pensarlo y para ver en cuantas ocasiones quizá nos lo han podido decir a nosotros. P. Jairo

La Basílica de Letrán La Iglesia conmemora la dedicación de la Basílica de Letrán, hecho que ocurrió el 9 de noviembre del año 324. El Papa Silvestre la dedicó al Salvador, cuya imagen dada a conocer a los fieles después de las persecuciones. Fue un acontecimiento singular. Los Papas fijaron su residencia en el Palacio próximo a la Basílica y por eso se convirtió en su catedral y en "madre y cabeza de todas las iglesias de la ciudad de Roma y del mundo". Si celebramos la dedicación de nuestras iglesias particulares, si festejamos la dedicación de nuestras catedrales, parece justo que celebremos todos los años en el mundo entero la dedicación de la Iglesia madre, de la catedral del Papa, en la que tiene lugar todavía hoy la toma de posesión oficial de los Pontífices romanos.
Noviembre 2 RECORDANDO LA VIRGEN DE GUADALUPE
PRIMERA APARICIÓN En la madrugada del 9 de Diciembre de 1531, un indio converso, Juan Diego se dirigía a Tlatelolco a oír Misa, cuando pasaba al pie del cerro del Tepeyac vio una luz brillante en lo alto del cerro y oyó música celestial. Lleno de admiración se quedó quieto. Luego oyó una voz femenina que le pedía que subiera. Cuando llego a la cumbre vio a la Santísima Virgen María parada entre luz gloriosa, vestida con esplendor celestial. La belleza de su aspecto juvenil y su tierna mirada llenaron a Juan Diego de indescriptible felicidad cuando escuchaba las palabras que le decía en su lengua indígena. Le dijo que ella era la inmaculada Virgen María, Madre del Verdadero Dios y le hizo saber su deseo de que se construyera un templo ahí donde ella pudiera manifestar su amor, su compasión, su socorro y protección. “Pues yo soy una Madre misericordiosa”, dijo, “tuya y de todos los que habitan esta tierra, que me amen, confíen en mi e invoquen mi ayuda”. “Por lo tanto ve a donde se encuentra el Obispo en México y dile que YO, la Virgen María, te he enviado a ti para hacerle saber mi gran deseo”.

SEGUNDA APARICIÓN El Obispo no creía la historia que el Mexicano le decía. Así que Juan Diego regreso al Tepeyac donde encontró a la Santísima Virgen esperándolo y le conto su fracaso. Ella le pidió que regresara nuevamente. Cuando lo hizo, el Obispo le pidió que la Señora le diera una señal. Juan informo a la Señora quien le prometió conceder esa petición a la mañana siguiente. Juan Diego no pudo acudir a la cita debido a la repentina enfermedad de su tío, Juan Bernardino.
