NOT WATCHING FOR THE SECOND COMING As we near the end of the Church year, the scriptures become more urgent. Both the prophet Malachi and Jesus in the Gospel according to Luke offer graphic pictures of a terrible future. But we are missing the message if we use these passages to speculate about when the world will end. The troubles predicted have already occurred, and then some. In the last century alone we have seen devastation beyond anything the ancient prophets could have imagined. We weren’t given these passages to strike fear in our hearts, but faith. The sun of justice will rise, Malachi assures us, for those who are faithful. And Jesus promises, “By your perseverance you will secure your lives.” But it is Paul who brings the message down to earth. The Thessalonians were so sure that the end of the world was upon them, some of them had stopped working! Paul states his case clearly: “If anyone was unwilling to work, neither should that one eat.” We are not called to worry about how things will end, but to live today faithfully. Copyright © J. S. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We are faced with strong and disturbing readings today that hold a certain fascination, since they seem at first glance to be blueprints for future inevitable wars and hardship. A fundamentalist interpretation focuses on this aspect. Yet we hear them at our Sunday celebration of the Eucharist, which infuses them with hope and optimism. Rather than dreading the future, today’s liturgy assures us that God is with us in all of life’s inevitable trials, and that we have a role in shaping the outcome of human history. Occasionally, some Christians have attempted to decode these readings for an exact measure of the world’s end, but they have thus far been disappointed. “Nothing lasts forever” is a lyric from a Broadway show. Stars fall from the sky, leaves wither and fall, mountains wash into the sea, human projects and governments totter and collapse with great regularity. Today’s liturgy opposes this idea as incomplete, reminding us that Christ has made a permanent change in human history, and that life in him is life forever. Rather than inviting us to throw in the towel, today’s liturgy strengthens us for acts of goodness and grace in our families, communities, and world. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Sunday by Paul Turner Our entire society sees something special about Sunday. Business hours change. Breakfast menus expand. Work hours shrink. Sporting events surface. The newspaper inflates. Movie schedules increase. We expect leisure on Sunday. Part of the weekend, it begins the week and ends the week. It is a sacred day, a time outside normal time when life takes a break. Sunday symbolizes paradise, a place and pace of leisure and pleasure. How did all this happen? We Christians owned Sunday first. It is our most important day. On a Sunday Jesus rose from the dead (Mt 28:1). On Sundays his followers met to break bread (Acts 20:7). The resurrection is our most central belief. We choose Sunday for our primary gathering because the day itself proclaims our faith. Mass on Wednesday or Monday just would not be the same. Sunday is Easter. You can change the day you shop for groceries or go to the bank without much loss. But church is different. It demands a particular day, like a holiday or an anniversary. If we did not gather for Eucharist on Sunday, we have not proclaimed the resurrection.
The Christmas Mitten Tree will be up in the vestibule of the church beginning Sunday Dec. 8th. Please take a mitten for a needy child of our Parish. Gifts should be new and gift wrapped, please remember to put the mitten on the gift. Donations will be accepted through Dec. 22nd and may be dropped off in the church on Sunday or in the Parish Office during the week. Thank you for your generosity!
Our definition of “Sunday” includes Saturday night. This does not compromise to convenience. Jesus rose from the dead during the night. So our Eucharist still honors the resurrection when it takes place at the beginning of that night — namely, on Saturday evening.
Faith Formation Office will be collecting canned goods and non-perishables for Christmas Food Baskets for the needy of our Parish. All donations may be dropped off at the Faith Formation Office during the week or left in the back of the church. Donations will be accepted up until Dec. 20th. Thank you for your generosity.
Unity, leisure and prayer characterize a Sunday. Our attendance at church unites us with the believers of our own community and with all Christians throughout the world. Our abstinence from work frees our mind for prayer. Football, food and freedom are all supplementary to Sunday’s main purpose, celebrating Eucharist.
If a serious reason keeps you from attending church on Sunday, your pastor may dispense you. Your conversation with him honors your commitment to your community. On a Sunday when you cannot participate in the Eucharist, you may wish to pray the Scriptures of that day and share a prayer at meal with other believers.

Revenues The first collection continues to run well behind our $23,000 per week parish goal with a 15% shortfall versus the quarterly budget. Expenses Expenses other than Maintenance and Renovation are tracking very close to budgeted levels. However, because of the revenue shortfall we had to defer over $25,000 needed maintenance on our church and properties. Net Income We had a slight loss for the first quarter, and were unable to make needed repairs for our church and parish properties. Mortgage Balance The outstanding balance on the loan that was taken out to rebuild the church and replace the roof is $159,846 as of September 30, 2013.
Beginning in July with the annual report to the parish, the Finance Council introduced a written commentary in support of the traditional quarterly financial statements. This is tradition will continue with each set of quarterly results. For the fiscal quarter ending September 30, 2013, the financial results show a deficit of $2,325. Every Sunday, we report that our parish goal is to collect $23,000 per week and in most weeks, we fall far short. Our first collection was 15% below the amount needed in the First Quarter to meet our annual budget. It is important to note that due to the collections shortfall, the actual loss is much more than the $2,325 reported above. Because revenues were low we were required to defer several major maintenance issues for the church. When we did the budget, we identified several projects including the programmed replacement of obsolete air conditioning equipment and addressing the acoustical problems in the church that would be addressed if collections would improve. Since that did not happen, no action on these projects could begin. As we begin the Second Quarter we are aware of necessary roof repairs which will also impact our finances. On a positive note, the Annual Pastoral Appeal results are moving along nicely. It would appear that we will reach our goal by the end of the year if all of you who have made pledges are able to successfully complete those commitments. In the last report, we also provided data on the large number of families who do not identify themselves when making contributions by using either envelopes with their names on them or a personal check. As a result, they cannot get any credit for their donations in the form of tax deductions nor can we substantiate that they are active members of the parish. Again, we encourage you to visit out parish website at www.icctampa.org and look into our Online Giving Program. It is a great way to support Incarnation and to be sure your family is recognized for your faithful offerings. If you have any specific questions regarding parish financials, do not hesitate to contact Paul Hunter at the parish office or on phunter@icctampa.org.
Stewardship ReflecƟon In today’s Gospel Jesus suggests that his disciples must be prepared to suffer ridicule, persecution and perhaps even death if they are to follow him. Sometimes we may wonder if enduring ridicule and scorn are what we really signed up for when we received the sacraments of initiation. Would we not rather sneak through life as painlessly as possible? Good stewards take their faith seriously and find comfort in the closing words of today’s Gospel: “You will be hated by all because of my name but not a hair on your head will be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives.” Let us make it a part of our daily prayer routine to ask the Holy Spirit for the courage to act in Jesus’ name no matter the consequences.
