True Stewardship

The Ruler of the Universe

The gospel message proclaimed throughout the New Testament invites us to live in harmony with the world. This is a challenge to care for the world and be stewards of all that God has given us. Like generations before us, we are entrusted with the care of the earth so that generations to follow may enjoy the same gifts. Sometimes, however, we are absorbed into the ways of the world. When we are of the world, we rely heavily on the power of wealth, beauty, fame, and accumulation of material possessions. We want earthly possessions and carelessly turn our hearts from the responsibilities of stewardship and conservation. The readings today challenge us to walk away from the world so that we might inherit our share of God’s kingdom. How we live our lives directly reflects our love for God.

In today’s first reading, Daniel reports a dream in which he saw “one like a Son of man coming, on the clouds of heaven” (Daniel 7:13). This was the one to whom God would give everlasting rule. It was the idea of “rule” that may be challenged. Rulers of Jesus’ day used their royal status to gain wealth and power. They dealt little in justice and fairness. Therefore, it was not uncommon for Jesus to tell those who listened that his kingdom was not of this world, a concept difficult for many to understand. Pilate did not understand.

Pilate asked Jesus if it was true that he was the King of the Jews Jesus simply responded, “My kingdom does not belong to this world” (John 18:36). The kingdom Jesus described had nothing in common with the world, and the idea was impossible for Pilate to grasp. So Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Pilate became frustrated, irritated, and resorted to ridicule and mockery of Jesus. Readings for the Week The Lord is the alpha and the Monday: Dn 1:1-6, 8-20; Dn 3:52-56; omega, the beginning and the end. The Lk 21:1-4 Lord exists in all time: now, before, and ever after. The reason for Jesus coming Tuesday: Dn 2:31-45; Dn 3:57-61; into the world was to announce his Lk 21:5-11 kingdom and proclaim the truth. The Wednesday: Dn 5:1-6, 13-14, 16-17, truth means walking in the way of God 23-28; Dn 3:62-67; Lk 21:12-19 and following Jesus into his kingdom even though both actions require a Thursday: Dn 6:12-28; Dn 3:68-74; Lk 21:20-28 Thanksgiving Day, turning away from the world and its values. A Holy Year of Mercy

What is Mercy?

Imagine a world without judgement, condemnation, and full of forgiveness. This is the hope of Pope Francis, who has proclaimed a Holy Year of Mercy for the whole Church.

Mercy is acts of love by which we care for the bodily and spiritual needs of others. Being merciful frequently includes forgiveness of others, just as God the Father demonstrates forgiveness of our sins through love.

What is the Holy Year of Mercy? Pope Francis announced a jubilee year, a very special event in the Catholic Church, called the Holy Year of Mercy. A jubilee year is called by the church to receive a blessing and pardon from God; this jubilee year begins on December 8, 2015 and will close on November 20, 2016, the Feast of Christ the King. The Holy Year of Mercy celebrates being a witness of mercy and invites us all to follow the example of God as merciful, forgiving and loving followers. 4|

What does Scripture teach us about mercy? • Luke teaches to “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” (Luke 6:36) • The Parable of the Lost Sheep (Luke 15:1-7) shows us the mercy of God. • James teaches us that mercy triumphs over judgement. • Matthew teaches us “Blessed are the merciful for they will ©2015 by William H. Sadlier, Inc. be shown mercy.” (Matthew 5:7)

widows, orphans, displaced and homeless people flocking the streets of Diocese of Tshumbe, Democratic Republic towns and villages. Many of these of the Congo people live HIV/AIDS, malaria, and various diseases. Up to this day, the diocese is still struggling to recover from the effects of this war. Being the primary institution in the region that takes care of the basic needs of the population, including education, health care, and infrastructure, the diocese of Tshumbe has to seek funds to operate the many orphanages that it opened in response to these humanitarian crises. On the weekend of November 28-29, we will welcome Father Albert Shuyaka to our parish. Doctoral student at the Catholic University of America in Washington DC, Father Albert Shuyaka is a priest from the diocese of Tshumbe in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire), the second largest nation in Africa. He will speak at all the Masses to share his firsthand experience of the many challenges and joys of doing God’s work in the Diocese of Tshumbe.

It is for the sake of these suffering members of the body of Christ that Albert Shuyaka asks us to prayerfully consider how we can help make a difference in the lives of these people. Without generous people like us, the diocese of Tshumbe will be forced to close some orphanages, the only place the parentless children call home.

A REALLY BIG THANK YOU We couldn’t do it without your support!

Father Michael wishes to extend his gratitude to everyone who participated in memorializing the windows in our mission parish in the Dominican Republic. If you are still considering making donation please do so. It will be greatly appreciated! If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Irene at the parish office.

SPIRITUAL MOTHERHOOD FOR PRIESTS The Vatican Congregation for the Clergy's letter to all the bishops of the Church states: "The vocation to be a spiritual mother for priests is largely unknown, scarcely understood and, consequently, rarely lived, not withstanding its fundamental and vitally important. It is a vocation that is frequently hidden, invisible to the naked eye, but meant to transmit spiritual life." 8 December, 2007. Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Rey del Universo 22 de noviembre de 2015

813-885-7861

Dios no quiere humillarnos sino completarnos.
