REDEFINING KINGSHIP This last Sunday of the Church’s liturgical year is dedicated to Christ, our King. In the first reading, from the second book of Samuel, we meet Jesus’ ancestor David, the greatest king of Israel. This passage describes a glorious monarch who is acclaimed by all the tribes of Israel. He is called both a “shepherd” and a “commander.” The second reading, from Paul’s Letter to the Colossians, also contains glorious language, describing Christ as “the firstborn of all creation.” Only at the end of this passage do we hear a hint of the paradox we will meet in today’s Gospel: Christ the King makes “peace by the blood of his cross.” In Luke’s Gospel, we confront the stark reality of Christ’s kingship. Here is our king, hanging on a cross, jeered, taunted, berated by a common criminal. This king looks defeated and powerless. Yet he demonstrates how absolute his power is. His death is truly for the salvation of all, one person at a time, starting with the “Good Thief,” and continuing through the ages to us today. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

813-885-7861 Stewardship and Thanksgiving Day Thanksgiving Day, in Canada and the United States, is a special North American feast. Although it is not a feast on the Catholic liturgical calendar, many parishes celebrate the Eucharist with the Mass of Thanksgiving. Some will have a basket of fruit and grain, or a cornucopia, adorning the foot of the altar. Thanksgiving Day truly holds a spiritual significance for the Christian steward. It is a day that makes us take notice of the fundamentals of stewardship and the importance of having a grateful heart. Thanksgiving is a day that gives us an opportunity to show our gratitude, provide hospitality and celebrate with loved ones. For the Christian steward, the holiday is rooted deeply in the biblical belief that the world was created by a loving God as a gift for each of us. From the two creation accounts in the Book of Genesis we understand that this gift of creation is intended to be received by us in thanksgiving and held in stewardship. As a matter of fact, this principle is one of the starting points for a truly Catholic worldview; that all creation is good and that the response to this gift can only be that of awe and a feeling of such gratitude that we would want to share this gift. Stewardship in the Catholic tradition affirms that into this creation, God sent Jesus the Christ to live among us and teach us the ways of God, and that our stewardship of the world includes cultivating it and building it into an even better and more grace-filled world; a world that reveals the light of Christ and is returned to his Father with increase. Stewards strive to embrace a life of gratitude; a life that reminds them of the relative abundance they enjoy. It is abundance unavailable to most of the earth’s inhabitants. Most of us have much more than we really need, and the spirit of gratitude should impel us to share this relative abundance with those who are less fortunate. As Thanksgiving Day approaches, let us take stock of the many wonderful blessings we enjoy. Let’s be sure to take time to thank God in prayer for our abundance; avoid the sin of an ungrateful heart; and consider how we might be even better stewards of the gifts God has entrusted to us. In today’s Gospel we hear of the rulers who sneered at Jesus, the soldiers who jeered at him, the criminal who reviled him, and the people who just stood by. At our own parish church the cross stands high. Yet, every Sunday there are those who sit in front of it and are not moved by it. There are people who walk right by the cross, unmoved by it. Perhaps they’ve walked by it so many times they no longer give it a second thought. Could it be they are unmoved because the heart of the unbelieving thief is in them? Good stewards walk by the cross, notice it and ask themselves: “All this you did for me, what I have done for you?” Copyright 2013, © International Catholic Stewardship Council. All rights reserved

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today’s solemnity, the final feast of the Church year, is a youngster as feasts go. In 1925, Pope Pius XI was distressed by global political upheaval and the de-Christianizing of society. That year was a “Holy Year,” keyed to the sixteen hundredth anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, when the words “and of his kingdom there will be no end” were added to the Creed. The Pope explained that although most feasts had developed over many centuries, the Church sometimes provided a new feast to address new needs. He pointed to the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, showing Christ’s love and compassion in a time when many people embraced a cold and gloomy spirituality. Originally on the last Sunday of October, in the late 1960s the solemnity of Christ the King was moved to the last Sunday of the year. Fresh from baptism’s waters, we are anointed with chrism “as Christ was anointed priest, prophet, and king.” This feast is a key to our identity. On this feast, we recognize Christ as a king who breaks the usual mold of kingship, and who shapes his kingdom with our hands, our words, our deeds of love and service. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Faith Formation Office will be collecting canned goods and non-perishables for Christmas Food Baskets for the needy of our Parish. All donations may be dropped off at the Faith Formation Office during the week or left in the back of the church. Donations will be accepted up until Dec. 20th. Thank you for your generosity.

THANKSGIVING Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received. Thankfulness is the natural impulse to express that feeling. Thanksgiving is the following of that impulse. —Henry Van Dyke
