MARK’S JESUS
Mark’s Gospel is the shortest and tersest of all four. The discourses of Jesus tend to be terser as well. Mark’s portrayal of Jesus has none of the poetry of the Sermon on the Mount or the Sermon on the Plain as in Matthew or Luke, nor the extensive, reflective “I Am” discourses as in John. Mark’s Jesus “cuts to the chase,” we would say today. This is reflected quite well in today’s passage. It is no accident that the dialogue of Jesus at this point in the Gospel according to Mark—the concluding words about the end of the world— immediately before his passion, is riddled with exclamation points and an overall sense of urgency. We would do well to re-tool our own way of living this Advent, for we live in a world urgently in need of hearing the message of Jesus proclaimed. It’s time for us to “wake up!” and get out into the world to do it. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

WE ARE LOCATED NEXT TO THE PARISH OFFICE! HOURS: Mon to Thurs: 10am to 3pm This is the First Sunday of Advent, with it comes a hope for a blessed New Year for all of our families. Let us begin this Advent Season by preparing our hearts and minds for the birth of Jesus Christ. Now is a great time to come back to the Sacrament of Reconciliation in order to truly prepare ourselves. We will also begin using the new prayers in our Roman Missal. Parents please take this opportunity to help your child in Mass with the changes by showing them where to find the prayers in the “Today’s Missal”.
PLEASE KEEP THE CHILDREN WHO WILL BE RECEIVING FIRST RECONCILIATION ON DECEMBER 10TH IN YOUR PRAYERS. Reminder there is NO Faith Formation this Sunday or next Sunday, Dec. 4th. Sessions will resume Sunday, Dec.11th.
WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH THE PRAYERS AT MASS? At Masses today, Catholic parishes in the United States are for the first time in about forty years using a new English translation of all the prayers. These prayers are found in The Roman Missal, the large book that we are accustomed to seeing the priest use at our Eucharistic liturgies. In the early part of this century, the late Blessed Pope John Paul II called for the original Latin Missal (the official prayer book for Mass for the entire Catholic Church worldwide) to be retranslated into the various languages prayed throughout the world. In particular, he and other Church leaders felt that the English translation could be improved. He called for new translations that would be much more like the Latin texts upon which they are based, so that all Catholics throughout the world would become more closely united by praying translations that were closer to the original. The words that we pray at Mass express our beliefs; it is important that the translations capture and express these beliefs clearly. The translation process has come to a culmination now, and today we begin using this new translation at Mass. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Page 4

PRAYER OF THE WEEK November 27, 2011, First Sunday of Advent Grant your faithful, we pray, almighty God, the resolve to run forth to meet your Christ with righteous deeds at his coming, so that, gathered at his right hand, they may be worthy to possess the heavenly Kingdom. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Reflection question: What righteous deeds would I be able to bring with me if Christ returned this week? First Sunday of Advent
November 27, 2011 The Catholics Come Home® initiative for the Diocese of St. Petersburg is a media campaign intended to show the beauty of our faith and to invite those who have left the Catholic faith or just “wandered away” to come back home. The Advent/Christmas season provides an excellent opportunity to invite people to come home to the Catholic Church. From December 16-January 22 television commercials will be aired on almost every network and cable station in the Tampa Bay media market. These are positive messages that will evoke pride in our Catholic faith and will allow viewers who have been away from the practice of the Catholic faith to say, “There’s a place for us—we are invited back!”
The television ads alone are not sufficient. The invitation, witness and hospitality of all parishioners is needed. We can invite family members, friends, neighbors and fellow workers to rediscover their Catholic faith or embrace it for the first time. Invite them home this Christmas! For more information and to find out how you can help, visit: www.dosp.org and click on the Diocese of St. Petersburg/Catholics Come Home® logo on the front page of the website.
