TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Each of the seven sacraments, like other aspects of the Church’s pastoral plan, is an attempt to be faithful to the image of Christ we discover in the Gospels. Anointing of the sick is rooted in Jesus’ saving deeds of healing and even rescue from death. What is your favorite encounter of Jesus with a sick person? Often, it seems that Jesus would go at once to the person in a crowd who was in the most pain, in the deepest need. A man born blind, Peter’s mother-in-law, a woman afflicted by years of uncontrollable hemorrhages, a little Roman girl beloved by her soldier father, a crippled man lowered from the rafters, and even a man who lost his ear to a swinging sword in the garden of agony. This list reads like an admissions chart in an emergency room, and perhaps that is the point. The whole human experience from childhood to old age, from sudden catastrophic illness to chronic debilitating conditions, is represented by those for whom Jesus has such great compassion. This we can name a treasure of tradition with a capital “T.” We are a people of compassion for our sick, who reach out in tenderness to listen, to keep vigil, to strengthen, to touch with reverence, and to anoint with precious oil. —Rev. GOD’S WORD TODAY “Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down.” This line from today’s first reading from the prophet Isaiah sums up the stance of God’s people as we begin another Advent season of waiting, longing, and expectation. Year after year we sing “O Come, O come, Emmanuel,” yet, when we look around, we tend to discover more ways that God seems absent from our world. As Advent opens before us, let us join our prayer to the lament of the ancient Israelites, crying out for God’s presence. At the same time, let us begin Advent encouraged by the words of Saint Paul, who promises that God is faithful. Finally, let us allow the final word of today’s Gospel to sink into our own hearts and the heart of our community of faith. May the Lord not come suddenly and find us sleeping. As God’s word is proclaimed today, let that word be like an alarm, waking us out of the snooze of complacency. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, copyright © J. S. Paluch Company

In Advent, we celebrate our hope that the Lord might come more fully into our lives. The first reading from Isaiah voices the hope of sinners for a redeemer. Unlike Isaiah, we know that God has come to bring us back, when the Father sent his Son, Jesus, to save us. Our faith in Jesus leads us to a new way of looking at the world. We can see what God is doing as well as remembering what God has done. Like the gatekeepers in Jesus’ Gospel parable, we need to keep our eyes open for him. When we only look out for ourselves, we may miss the signs of God’s presence around us. Instead of looking at the difficulties of life as obstacles, we can watch for them as opportunities to stretch our faith, to rely on God, or to show God’s love to a friend. The recent retranslation of the prayers of the Mass can be an opportunity to stretch our faith and our understanding of the Eucharist. The Corinthians were also watching for the Lord to come. They were thinking of Jesus as coming in glory. Though we don’t see the full glory of the Lord, part of that glory is his presence in the sacraments. In them we celebrate not just the coming of the Lord, but his working in the world. He shares his life with us in baptism, gives us his Spirit in confirmation and himself in the Eucharist, heals us in reconciliation and the anointing of the sick, and calls us to make him present to others in holy orders and matrimony. You could almost say his second coming is taking place now. Watch for it. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

No te juzgues intachable, perfecto o infalible.
