Stewardship Reflection
PRAYER FOR THE NEW YEAR
Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
In today’s second reading we listen to one of the most compelling exhortations for Christian living: “Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (Col 3:17). “Whatever you do”---that means the whole of life is to be related to Christ Jesus. Everything in life, every activity, can become an act of glorifying the Lord. Good stewards commit even their daily routine to Christ: doing everything “in the name of the Lord.” Perhaps it would be a good idea this week to memorize this marvelous verse and repeat it to yourself frequently. Make it part of your morning prayer each day. Copyright 2013, © International Catholic Stewardship Council. All rights reserved

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
December 29, 2013
January 1
By Paul Turner
January 1 is New Year’s Day to most of the world, but in the Catholic Church it is also the solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God. This is a relatively new title for the day. Older Catholics will remember that we used to call January 1 the feast of the Circumcision. Circumcision may not seem like much to have a feast about. But the day commemorated an event in the life of Jesus, just as we have days for his conception, birth, presentation in the temple, baptism, transfiguration, death and resurrection. Luke specifically mentions the circumcision of Jesus (2:21). It took place, according to
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We are in the season of the Incarnation, the mystery of God’s love poured out in Christ’s birth. The word derives from the Latin carnis meaning “flesh.” Throughout history, some Christians have distrusted the “flesh,” and stressed a hatred of this world and its pleasures. Perhaps they have not paid enough attention to how “embodied” the sacraments are. One thirdcentury author put it plainly in an image that may alarm diet‑conscious Americans, explaining that we wash the body so the soul can be cleansed, that we anoint the body so the soul can be strengthened, and that we eat the body and blood of Christ so that “the soul can fatten on God.” Catholics “get” that God is revealed in this world. The sacraments use the “stuff” of creation: water and oil; the senses of the body, touch and taste and smell. We use the things of this world rightly. After all, God’s love poured out into human flesh means the world has eternal value. Why else would Jesus describe the kingdom to come as a teeming city or a marriage banquet? Catholics are realists, and nowhere is that more evident than when we gather for a sacrament. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
the custom, on the eighth day after his birth. That is why the feast commemorating the event fell on the eighth day of Christmas. It just happened to be New Year’s Day. The same passage from Luke says Jesus then received his name. That is why the old calendar celebrated the Most Holy Name of Jesus on the Sunday between the feasts of the Circumcision and the Epiphany. If no Sunday intervened, the feast occurred on January 2. It is now an optional memorial on January 3. In present times the Gospel passage for January 1 still refers to the circumcision, but the new title for the feast seems to have another verse in mind, Luke 2:19. There we hear that Mary treasured all the things that happened and the words that were said and pondered them in her heart. On the octave day of the birth of Jesus, we celebrate Mary, who bore him. On January 1 we are also expected to pray for world peace. In the United States, this day is a holy day of obligation unless it falls on a Monday or a Saturday. LOVE For generations, various cultures regarded family life merely as a utilitarian necessity. Sirach introduces honor and respect. For Jews and Christians alike, the value of family goes even further. The family is seen as the indispensable school where love is learned. Paul addresses the Colossians and offers a list of virtues that make for a solid and happy church. These values also make for a happy family at ease with itself and its members: mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, forgiveness. As a capstone, Paul urges love, which brings all of these domestic virtues to perfection. Paul seems to be on a roll as he lauds the virtues of the church at Colossae. With such heartfelt virtues, it is no wonder Paul bursts into song. Who wouldn’t? It’s clear that the center of the church is love. It is clear that no matter how far from home the members travel, the heart remains and all the members are connected by the gravitational pull of mutual love, a love first learned in family life. Thank you for helping to make Christmas special for them. If you would like to become more involved with some of the year-long, life-affirming activities of this ministry, please contact Teresa Trubilla at 813-841-6563. ****************************** Dear Children of Incarnation Parish: On Sunday, January 5, 2014, as we celebrate Epiphany, we are reminded of the journey that the Three Kings made to meet the Baby Jesus. They brought him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. You are invited to share in their journey by bringing baby gifts or prayers to leave at the manager during the offertory at all masses. Items such as diapers, bottles, baby wipes, receiving blankets, etc. will be collected for mothers and mothers-to-be at the Foundations of Life Pregnancy Center.
Jesús aprendió a vivir junto a María y José.
