I pray these lines find all doing well and not getting heat stroke – it is rally brutal out there and we just started summer, but we all signed up for this – we are living in Florida. So glad that things are getting back to normal at the parish, parishioners coming back in droves and getting the feeling like the pandemic is really becoming a thing of the past, don’t get me wrong, I’m still hearing about people, parishioners getting covid, but it has reduced significantly. This weekend is one of those times when a preacher can go in so many directions with subjects to preach about. For this article I will focus on St. Paul and his “thorn in the flesh.” There are different takes and translations for the meaning behind this however one of the prominent meanings deals with sin. The reason for my focus is that I use this example all the time in the sacrament of confession. When St. Paul uses this term of a “thorn” he is referring to a sin or defect in his character that he prays he could fix or get rid of. He is told “My grace is sufficient for you.” In essence what we are hearing and need desperately to learn is that all of us are subject to sin. Each and every one of us has a sin or sins which we can fall into, either from time to time or constantly – it varies from person to person. In some ways it is as unique as “finger-prints”, Satan is clever and uses our experiences as well as our individual thought processes to “get to us” however is very common and many are affected by similar sins. Always remember that Flip Wilson was an imaginary character (although very funny) the catch phrase being – “the devil made me do it!’ this phrase is a total fallacy!!! Satan does not make us do anything at all, he has no power over us whatsoever except for the power WE give him. If we had no choice, it would not be our fault. That being stated, all of us are sinners, we NEVER have the ability of thought process to point a finger or point out the flaws of others (parent to young child being the exception -it’s in fact your duty). We should be so concerned about fixing ourselves and living a good life that we have no time to point out other’s faults. Remember God is going to see YOU face to face and ask about what YOU did in life, not what your spouse did, your child, parent etc. Realizing our faults helps us to depend upon God in the way we are designed to. We cannot and in fact, never make it on our own. It is God’s grace and His grace alone that helps us to improve – if we have will power and finally get past something, who do you think gave you that will power – The one who also forgives and loves you! Have a great week! Love, Fr. Mike
Thank you for your generous support in last week’s Peter’s Pence Collection! As a parish, we collected $ 1,649.00. Our contributions, combined with those from our brothers and sisters around the world, provide essential support for the Holy See’s activities and help Pope Francis relieve the victims of wars, oppression, and natural disaster around the world. If you missed the collection, it is not too late to give. Visit www.usccb.org/nationalcollections.

Believe in God’s Truth
“’Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?’ And they took offense at him.”- Mark 6:3 Have you ever been a situation where you haven’t seen an old friend or coworker, maybe for many years, and then when you reunite, you think, “boy, he or she has changed!” The same can be said for a young adult returning from college, or someone returning after a long deployment in the military. When you first saw them, you may have judged first by appearance, then by what they said in sharing what’s been going on in their life since your last encounter. At times it can be disturbing to you. After all, that’s not how you remembered them. In Mark’s Gospel this weekend, Jesus returns to His hometown, seemingly to be welcomed by His former community. Many remembered Jesus as the son of Mary and Joseph, the carpenter. But Jesus had been gone awhile. He’d grown up. We read that Jesus goes to the synagogue to teach, and that those who heard Him were astonished. They become indignant, asking “How could the son of a carpenter have this kind of knowledge? What gives him the authority or right to say such things?” In essence, the people of Jesus’ hometown question His authority and all that He was doing. How could those Jesus grew up with not accept Him now? This account is meant for us to examine ourselves. How often are we quick to judge others, to pigeon-hole them based on nationality, color of skin or creed? Today more than ever, it seems we are not open to the opinion of others, so much so that we do not even listen to the other side. Our Lord shows us the way to the Father, yet often we want to do things our way instead of His. We pick and choose what we want to believe versus God’s truth. Have the courage today not to pass judgment on others based on what we have seen in the past, but what has been revealed to us as truth. -Bishop Gregory Parkes
