I pray these lines find all doing well. All is fine at this end, same old, same old BUT – I like that, if fact I prefer it. As all of you are well aware we have entered the season of Lent Among other things I give up chocolate, I have to write this article so far in advance that I can tell you I’m still smiling cause the chocolate is a flowin!! By the time this article gets to you that chocolate is no longer around until Easter, at least for this pastor. We hear today about Jesus being tempted in the desert. Jesus is God, when He became one of us in the flesh, He was and is also fully human. This being the case, we as humans cannot go 40 days without food, Jesus fasted. Fasting means that you do not eat when the sun is out. Sunset until sunrise you are able to eat. I have heard people rationalize “Well father, He was also God – that’s why He was able to eat nothing for 40 days.” But, think about it, if He used His divinity then where is the sacrifice in fasting, the same can be said of the crucifixion, if He used His divinity, how could we possibly relate to the suffering? Jesus was tempted in the same way that we are yet never sinned. I pray for each of us that we have the inner strength during this time of Lent to look at our lives and strive to become the Catholics God calls us to. God Bless You! Love, Fr. Mike

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
MARCH 6, 2022
It can be easy to read today’s Gospel primarily as an account of Jesus saying “no.” No to the devil’s tempta ons of earthly comfort, no to idols of power and glory, and no to arrogantly manipula ng God’s will. But this Gospel passage is as much about what Jesus is saying “yes” to as it is what he’s saying “no” to. Each denial of the devil is really a profound affirma on of Christ’s iden ty as the Son of God. Jesus rejects these tempta ons, not because things like bread or even ruling are bad, but because they’re being offered to him on the condi on that He turns away from God the Father. In fact, Jesus’s rela onship with the Father is the source of his resistance to the devil’s tempta ons. He isn’t “going it alone.” Instead, he’s relying upon the strength of the Father to carry him through. It’s rela onship, not isolated “willpower,” that is the source of His strength. This is such an important lesson for us as we begin our Lenten season. Lenten disciplines are not about proving our “spiritual toughness.” They’re about abandoning ourselves more fully to the Father, so that we might not “live on bread alone.” One way we do this during Lent is through the prac ce of almsgiving—giving to the poor or to some other worthy cause. One cause our parish is striving to support is the Catholic Ministry Appeal. At the beginning of this Lenten season, let’s embrace almsgiving as an opportunity to say “yes” to the Father and our rela onship with Him. Visit www.dosp.org/catholicministryappeal
