President’s Message

A

s Easter is drawing near, we can only hope that the extremes of weather events in Australia will settle down and that the shocking events in Ukraine will end. Disaster Benefits for DQ applicants Quite a number of our members were adversely affected by the recent Queensland floods and made application to Dogs Queensland for some financial support from our Budgetary Disaster allocation. This last week the Board approved payments of $1000 to each of these applicants. In addition, thanks go to our major sponsor Royal Canin who provided a generous allocation of Royal Canin dry dog food to assist those affected. This is also being distributed. Our thoughts go to the people in the Lismore area who have recently been inundated with flood waters a couple of times. Ukrainian Kennel Union Members would know that our national body, the Australian National Kennel Council “Dogs Australia” is a member of the European FCI, the Federation Cynologique Internationale. The Ukrainian Kennel Union (UKU) is our equivalent national body and has 290,000 members, no doubt with many of them displaced with their dogs. By way of comparison, in Australia we have just over 30,000 members nationally. The FCI has established a special fund to provide funding to the UKU and its affected members and dogs. At a recent Dogs Australia meeting it was agreed that Dogs Australia would match any donation our State and Territory bodies donated for this fund. At our Board meeting this week it was agreed that $5000 would be donated by Dogs Queensland. It is likely that these funds will be reimbursed by a Ukrainian benefit show as the year progresses, but it was thought important to move quickly to donate these

4

funds. I note that Dogs Victoria has recently raised more than $8000 with a virtual show. Paws Aid ANZAC Day Show Planning is well underway for this special event. The Conformation Show starts at 1pm with the traditional dusk service happening at 5pm at our War Dog Memorial outside the Clubhouse. The service is conducted in conjunction with the Forest Lake RSL, and thanks go to our committee and those at the Forest Lake RSL for planning this event. Even if you are not entered in the show, I would suggest that you mark your diary and come along for the quite moving dusk service. It is a very special collaboration. New Board members At our Board meeting last week, it was decided to fill the two casual vacancies caused by the removal of Mr Woodrow as a director at the Special General Meeting held on 9 February 2022 and the subsequent resignation of Ms Carolyn Pearen as a director on 7 March 2022.

First of all, I would like to thank all those who expressed interest in joining the Board. It was a quality field showing a gratifying range of skills and backgrounds. Secondly, I would like to congratulate Ms Ainslie Carius and Ms Elisa McCutcheon on their appointment to these two casual director vacancies and welcome them to the Board. Ainslie is well known as a former councillor, director, President of Dogs Queensland and recently appointed Life Member. Over the years Elisa has made a substantial contribution to a breed club, Dogs Queensland committees and panels and also more recently to the set up of Dogs Australia. They join newly appointed Mr Gordon Mayne from North Queensland on the Board. That casual vacancy arose from the resignation of Mrs Sharron Taylor last December. We are looking to have profile articles about these new directors published in the magazine in the near future. Thirdly, it has been suggested by some members that more background information should be provided when directors resign from the Board. Being a director of the Canine Control Council (Queensland) Ltd is a completely voluntary role with no remuneration whatsoever. Done well, it is a time-consuming role that makes demands on the individual. Circumstances change and the question whether a director wishes to continue in the role is a private matter and is no doubt carefully considered by the person. I don’t believe the wider membership should be briefed with any relevant background information. Volunteering? At Dogs Queensland we are all about protecting our members. With continuing Covid requirements, we are doing double vaccination checks at the gates of our Durack Grounds and also at other show and event venues. Why not contact the office and put your name down to volunteer for a few hours gate duty? Say with Easter, you may not be showing every day so why not come along for a few hours on the other day or days and do a few hours gate duty. It is a great way to meet other members and assist the clubs! Stay safe and enjoy our array of shows and events coming up! Ulla Greenwood, President Dogs Queensland

Breeder Alert – Puppy Scam Websites Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government. Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.

An example of a typical scam is: • A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet. • The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix. • A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry. • Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published. • No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website. • The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures. • The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.

As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam: • Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix. • Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate. • Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct in-person contact with you. • Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details. • Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

It was agreed that for Shows held from Friday 29 April 2022, the Ground Levy payable would be reduced from $6 per entry to $5 per entry.

AFGHAN HOUND SURVEY

It was also noted that a number of Clubs hold Shows in conjunction with Dogs Queensland, currently the following are scheduled for 2022;

A survey was conducted by Dogs Australia last year to ascertain the feedback from all owners of registered Afghan Hounds in relation to the Minimum Breeding Age for Afghan Hound bitches being 24 months at the time of mating (unless a veterinary certificate is produced stating that for health reasons the bitch should be mated before 24 months). The response received indicated support. As this was an amendment to current regulations, the result of the survey was referred to the Dogs Australia Board of Directors for consideration at their February 2022 Special Board meeting where it was endorsed. As a consequence, the following new clause will be added to Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration which will be effective from 1 July 2022: 8.16 Afghan Hound (Added 02/22 – 6.1. Effective 01/07/2022) The Minimum Breeding Age for Afghan bitches is 24 months at the time of mating (unless a veterinary certificate is produced stating that for health reasons the bitch should be mated before 24 months).

Breeders of litters whelped on or after 1st June 2022 will be required to comply with the requirements as a prerequisite to registration of any litter on the ANKC Ltd Main Register. FCI PODCAST: FCI WORLD DOG SHOW 2020 & 2022 The FCI World Dog Show is the most coveted show by FCI members, as it truly represents THE most important show in the FCI global calendar. A show that is bid for by Members wanting to host it and then voted for at the FCI General Assembly by seventy-five voting full Members of the FCI. The organisation that goes into such a huge event is years in the planning, which is usually done at least five years in advance. With only one FCI World Dog Show a year, this year however sees for the first time in FCI history, two World Dog Shows hosted six months apart on two different continents – Europe and South America. The 2022 WDS was meant to take place in Brazil, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic the twice postponed 2020 FCI-WDS in Spain was graciously allowed to go ahead in 2022, the same year as the show in Brazil. In this episode, Gopi Krishnan speaks with the presidents of both, the RSCE, Jose Doval and CBKC,

Fabio Amorim to get their insights into what all the exhibitors, breeders and pedigree dog loving public can expect at both shows.

b) Regarding the issuance of export pedigrees for Ukrainian dogs sold or to be sold, the procedure is as follows: The new dog owner sends by email to UKU (hotline@ uku.com.ua) a copy of the puppy card/of the pedigree under the name of the previous owner/of the electronic puppy card, the information about himself/ herself and a bank receipt for the payment for the pedigree.

https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=m0liUo0iEB0&ab_channel=FCIforYOUtube

FCI NOTICE: IMPORTANT COMMUNICATION FOR THE ATTENTION OF UKRAINIAN BREEDERS

Final step : UKU sends by email to the dog owner the digital copy of the UKU Export pedigree. The digital copy can be later replaced by the genuine paper document once Ukrainian postal service starts working again. Any puppy card/export pedigree obtained according to the above procedure will be accepted by all FCI Members and Contract Partners.

Due to the conflict in Ukraine, many Ukrainian breeders and owners had to leave their country with their dogs, sometimes with new-born puppies and/or pregnant females. The latter will or have whelp(ed) in countries different from Ukraine.

NOTES FROM THE LITTER DEPARTMENT

The Ukrainian Kennel Union (UKU), aware of the situation, put forward a proposal to the FCI General Committee, which was accepted on 16 March, 2022. The proposal is as follows :

27.1 Each breeder of dogs must keep in a bound book or suitable computer database or spreadsheet, with provision for suitable details, a proper record of his/ her dog breeding activities (including whelping, inoculations, purchases, disposals, etc.) as directed by the CCCQ Ltd.

a) In case a bitch has whelped while being in a country (FCI member) different from Ukraine, export pedigrees will be issued by UKU according to the following procedure : A local veterinarian microchips the puppies in due age, vaccinates them, checks up the testicles, bite, for other possible anomalies like broken tail, etc, and issues the relevant certificate. The breeder/person taking care of the bitch and puppies sends this certificate online to UKU (hotline@ uku.com.ua) as well as the other relevant documents required by UKU (information about dam and sire, etc). A UKU cynologist, via a video connection, checks the microchip and the conformation of the puppies and issues the documents for the puppies (puppy cards) in digital copy. Final step : the electronic puppy cards are sent back by email to the breeder/person taking care of the dog. Later on, the electronic puppy cards will be exchanged for the export pedigrees by the new owners of the dogs.

Can Members please be aware of the following from the Dogs Queensland RULE BOOK. 27 – BREEDING RECORDS

27.2 Such records and the kennels and the relevant dogs shall be made available for inspection by any person appointed for that purpose by the CCCQ Ltd.

NEWLY APPOINTED ALL BREEDS JUDGE – BENITA MANGIN As a child my family always had a Black Labrador Retriever – my father thought they were the only dog to own. In the early 90’s I began my love of German Shorthaired Pointers. My husband accidently fell into showing our first German Shorthaired Pointer when a friend encouraged him to try his hand at this ‘showing thing’, so we entered our local Agricultural show and here we are 30 years on. It was inevitable that I would pick up the reins in the ring and my husband continued where his true interest lay – working the breed in field competition. With a vision to produce the dual-purpose German Shorthaired Pointers, we have to date fulfilled this with dual champions in the both show and field. Our kennel prefix ‘Gershopoin’ was established in the 90s, and more recently have resurrected the family ‘Typhoone’ prefix here in Australia being 4th generational breeders and exhibitors of English Pointers since 1945.

Anzac Day Dusk Service Invitation

Dogs Queensland and the Forest Lake RSL Sub Branch would like to extend an invitation to all members and their guests to attend the Anzac Day Remembrance Service to be held at the Dogs Queensland Animal War Memorial, Durack on Monday 25 April 2021 commencing at 5pm. Held at the conclusion of the Dogs Queensland Paws Aid Anzac Day Show, the service will pay homage to the lives lost of the animals who didn’t returned from active duty. Light refreshments of a ‘cuppa’, coffee, cold drinks and Anzac biscuits will be available in the Function Room following the service. The Animal War Memorial was dedicated and unveiled in February 2018. Since then the Forest Lake RSL Sub Branch have held annual Anzac Day services to coincide with Dogs Queensland Show days. Each year the canine community have been able to pay their respects by laying wreaths at the memorial. ‘Rex’ continues to keep a watchful eye over the grounds at Dogs Queensland.

Our dogs have been successful at all levels of competition with the most memorable accomplishment being awarded both Challenges, Best in Show and Puppy in Show at the 1998 National German Shorthaired Pointer Speciality. Over the years I have owned, bred and/or exhibited Borzois, Pointers, Labrador Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels, Brittany Spaniel, Smooth Fox Terriers, Jack Russell Terriers and Parson Russell Terriers. I have been actively involved throughout the years in several Speciality and All Breed Clubs, holding various positions and more recently bestowed the honour of Life Member of the Hervey Bay Kennel Club. It’s been a long road that I began in 2004. Thank you to those who supported and mentored me throughout this journey and pushed me to keep going to obtain All Breeds judge status. I am proud to say I got there in the end.

BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG

Bernese mountain dogs, known as “Berners” to their fans, are beloved for their sweet, calm, easy going nature and their devotion to their families, including small children and other pets. 14

DOG WORLD April 2022

Andrea Wilkinson – Polishdream Beenese

HISTORY: The Bernese Mountain Dog is otherwise known as the Sennenhund – pronounced se-nen-hund: Sennen being the alpine herdsmen and dairymen. The breed dates back to the Celtic times. It’s believed they originated in Switzerland in the mountainous regions of Central Europe. The Bernese Mountain Dog is one of the four different types of Sennenhund established for the purpose of farming, herding and drafting. The four types are:

• The greater Swiss Mountain Dog; • Bernese Mountain Dog; • Appenzeller Mountain Dog and the smallest the;

• Entlebucher Mountain Dog. The Bernese Mountain Dog work closely with their owners, whether driving cattle to and from the Alpine pastures, guarding the farm or pulling small wagons or carts. The Bernese makes an ideal family dog with their beautiful gentle nature, only wanting to be with its owners and to take part in every activity. importing Berners, and the first litter of Berner pups was born in England. Also in 1936, the Glen Shadow kennel in Louisiana imported a female and a male Berner from Switzerland. By early 1937, the AKC sent Glen Shadow a letter saying that the Bernese Mountain Dog had been accepted as a new breed in the Working Class. World War II again interrupted the progress of the breed outside its native land, but after 1945, importation and registration resumed in the United States. In 1968, the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America was founded, with 62 members and 43 registered Berners. Three years later, there were more than 100 members in the club. Meanwhile, the breed, which had died out in England during World War II, was reintroduced in Great Britain. The Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America became a member club of the AKC in 1981. In 1990, the AKC adopted its current Bernese Mountain Dog standard.

TEMPERAMENT: In addition to being strikingly good-looking, the Berner has a wonderful temperament. They’re known for being an exceptionally faithful dog, affectionate, eager to please, and highly intelligent. They’re easy to train if you allow them time to analyze what you want them to do. Most of all, they have a happy-go-lucky attitude about life. They will greet you with the biggest smile which melts hearts making them a very popular family pet.

During World War I, dog shows and breeding took a backseat to war efforts. But after the war, the first Bernese Mountain Dogs were exported, firstly to Holland and then to the United States — although the breed was not yet recognized by the American Kennel Club. In 1936, two British breeders began

The Berner is calm but gregarious, and sometimes even a little goofy when they play with family. They do well with children of all ages and with adults, but they aren’t a good choice for people who live in apartments or don’t have a large, fenced yard for them to play in. The Berner needs to live with their family, rather than be relegated to an outdoor kennel. They’re happiest when they can participate in all family activities. Prospective owners should know that the Berner is slow to mature, both physically and mentally; they may remain puppyish for some time. When selecting grooming tools it is important to make sure the length of the teeth are reaching through the coat. You will do no good if you only brush the surface of the fur. When brushing the coat, brush with the lie of the hair. Begin at the head, brush behind the ears where the fur is silky soft and prone to matt. Then brush the body of the dog. The undercoat should be brushed carefully. The longer hairs on the front legs are better combed than brushed, but the long hairs on the hind legs need to brushed and combed carefully too as knots do easily occur in these places. Finally, the tail should be brushed. You may like to put a bit of conditioning spray in the tail to make this a more pleasurable experience. Trimming the fur on the bottom of the foot can assist with traction on a slippery floor and also less dirt will be carried inside. This fur growing between the pads can be trimmed so that it is flush with the pads. You can also trim the fur so that the shape of the foot is neat. You may also

WHAT ARE THEY GOOD AT?: As they are a highly intelligent dog they can be trained for just about anything. Bernese have been commonly used as service dogs helping those with special needs. They are also seen very regularly in the Conformation ring and pleasingly with great numbers that previously. Bernese are strong swimmers and can be used as water rescue dogs and well as in the alpine regions in avalanche conditions. Dances With Dogs, Agility and Obedience – they are certainly an all-rounder. Just as long as they are with you and pleasing their owners they can apply themselves to just about anything.

ANNUAL FESTIVAL – RETOUR DES ALPAGES: On the second Saturday of October the streets of Annecy in France are filled with coloured herdsman, craftsmen, old manual trades, folklore

bands and typical local producers. One of the key elements of this parade are the Bernese Mountain Dogs pulling beautifully decorated carts filled with flowers and produce. They of course adore all of the attention and fanfare. This is a very important day to the town of Annecy and is symbolised as a day of feast to the valley. Visitors from all over the world come to watch the parade.

Bernese mountain dogs, known as “Berners” to their fans, are beloved for their sweet, calm, easy going nature and their devotion to their families, including small children and other pets. Bernese mountain dog puppies even resemble plush dog toys but as they grow they have no concept of personal space and think they are a lap dog instead of 50kg of bear.

Protecting your dog from infectious disease

– Republished with the kind permission of Boehringer Ingelheim Vaccinating your dog helps to protect against several serious and life-threatening infectious diseases. It is a critical part of a proper preventative healthcare program. A vaccine is a preparation designed to provide protection against a specific infectious disease. Vaccines work by stimulating an immune response that will protect your dog if it is subsequently exposed to the infection.

Canine parvovirus Canine parvovirus is a severe and frequently fatal cause of gastroenteritis. The disease is more common and severe in young puppies, but unvaccinated dogs of all ages can be infected. Affected dogs may develop severe vomiting and diarrhoea, often containing blood, and usually appear depressed. Intensive veterinary care is usually required, however some

20

DOG WORLD April 2022

dogs will die despite this. Canine Parvovirus is common in many parts of Australia. The virus is highly contagious and can survive for long periods in the environment. Vaccination against this virus is highly effective and plays a critical role in protecting dogs against infection.

Canine infectious hepatitis Canine infectious hepatitis is caused by the virus canine adenovirus type 1. Dogs of any age can become infected although the disease is more likely in dogs less than one year of age. Infected dogs may develop signs including fever, depression, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea. In severe cases death can occur rapidly within 24 to 48 hours. Dogs which survive can spread the virus for many months and the virus can survive for months in the environment.

potentially be spread from animals to humans.

Canine distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that can effect dogs of any age, with young dogs being at highest risk. Infected dogs may develop a range of signs including fever, coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite and depression. Some dogs will develop neurological signs such as seizures. Canine distemper is potentially fatal.

When should your dog be vaccinated?

Canine cough

Very young puppies are usually temporarily protected against the important infectious diseases by antibodies received through their mother’s milk. Puppies should then receive a course of vaccinations, usually starting from 6-8 weeks of age. Following the puppy course, your veterinarian will advise when booster vaccinations are due.

Also known as: Kennel cough

It’s no vacation without vaccination

Canine cough is a common infectious disease which can be easily spread wherever dogs congregate, such as parks, groomers, obedience schools and boarding kennels. There are many different types of bacteria and viruses which can cause canine cough, including Bordetella bronchiseptica, canine parainfluenza virus and canine adenovirus type 2. Bordetella bronchiseptica can survive in the environment for several weeks, so your dog may be at risk even if it does not come into direct contact with other infected dogs.

When staying in boarding facilities, dogs are at a higher risk of infectious diseases, so it is important to ensure your dog is protected. Before your dog visits a boarding facility make sure that vaccinations are up to date. Please don’t leave this to the last minute as the development of immune protection takes time. If you have any questions about vaccination and boarding please talk to your veterinarian.

The most common sign seen with canine cough is a dry hacking cough which may persist for several weeks, but other signs such as sneezing and nasal discharge may also be present. In some cases more severe disease can develop (e.g. pneumonia).

Canine coronavirus Canine coronavirus is highly contagious and spreads rapidly through susceptible dog populations. In general, disease in young dogs is more severe than in adults. Clinical signs may include lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration.

Vaccinations aftercare Vaccines are safe and effective, and play an important role in keeping our pets healthy. Like all medicines however, they can occasionally result in side effects. They are usually mild (e.g. lethargy, loss of appetite, or tenderness at the injection site) and usually lasts no longer than a few days. If you are concerned about any signs which develop after vaccination, please contact your veterinarian immediately.

Leptospirosis

Pixabay

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease which can affect many different species, including dogs and humans. Leptospirosis is spread in the urine of infected animals, with the leptospira types affecting dogs being transmitted mainly by rats. Dogs may become infected from exposure to contaminated water, food, soil or bedding, or from direct contact with rats (e.g. rat bite). Infected dogs may develop problems such as liver disease, kidney disease and bleeding disorders. Leptospirosis is a zoonotis disease, which means that it can

Cairns City Kennel Club Open Day Wagging tails and smiles were in abundance at the Cairns City Kennel Club’s Open Day on Saturday, 19 March 2022.

“It also gave newcomers an opportunity to see what they can do with their dogs in a dog-friendly environment.”

Over 200 people and their pooches came through the gates to see what the club has to offer. Throughout the day visitors got to see everything from show dogs strutting their stuff to a variety of dog sports. A highlight was the public events ranging from canine egg and spoon races, best trick and drag races.

New kennel club member Renee Melville said her family only recently joined the club and were preparing their dogs Coco and Poppy for their first dog show at the end of March.

The 14 market stalls had a variety of goods for sale from personalized pet portraits, handmade craft and dog toys. The biggest hit of the day was the coffee van and homemade dog treats. Club President, Gordon Mayne, said the open date showcased all of the activities on offer at the club as well as promoting responsible dog ownership. “It was great to see a whole variety of people from the community and different dogs too,’ he said.

Sue and Ginger testing their skills in the egg and spoon race.

22

DOG WORLD April 2022

“We brought the dogs down to get them familiar with the noises and the people involved with the shows. They loved it,” she said. “Our kids have just stared show handling classes too so it’s something the whole family can come along to.” The open day kicked off the club’s 70th anniversary celebrations with more activities planned throughout the year at their shows and dog sports trials. And, with the success of this year’s open day, plans have already started to make the open day in 2023 even bigger and better.

The market stalls were popular.

CAIRNS CITY KENNEL CLUB The Club was founded in 1952 as an all-breeds kennel club and 70 years later has grown to include a variety of dog sports activities including Agility, Scent Work, Tracking, Rally, Obedience, Tricks and Flyball. MEDIA UPDATE – David Margan & Marylu Lloyd This past month has been consumed by the muchdelayed consumer focused phase of the launch of Dogs Australia. Our President, Ulla Greenwood, who is also a member of the Dogs Australia executive was engaged to do national interviews regarding the breeding bans issue and the consumer launch itself focused on ‘National Puppy Day’.

Engagements are also up by 23 per cent. We’ve already gained 300 new Facebook followers this year, meanwhile we have 1250 Instagram followers, and they are still growing steadily.

The core of that campaign was ‘Research the Right Breed’, 1. Is this the right time to buy a pup? 2. What is the right breed for your family and lifestyle? 3. Who is the right breeder to buy from? This education program, driving our brand as the dog experts, is accompanied by seven videos illustrating the characteristics of each of our dog groups. Those videos were all shot here in Queensland courtesy of the wonderful work of Ian Rasmussen and over 140 handlers and dogs from our Queensland membership and have now all been uploaded onto the Dogs Australia website. Don’t forget to follow and like them on our Dogs Australia Facebook and Instagram page @dogs_ australia_ and the same on our Dogs Queensland site. #purebred #purebreddogs #pedigreedogs #dogsaustralia #dogsaus #dogsofaustralia #kennelclub #ethicalbreeder #responsiblebreeder #responsiblebreeding #righttime #rightbreed #rightbreeder #dogsofinstagram #dogslife #dalmatian #lagottoromagnolo #oldenglishsheepdog #cairnterrier #cavalierkingcharlesspaniel #bernesemountaindog #whippet Meanwhile the social media profile and audience of Dogs Queensland continues to grow. Our Dogs Queensland Facebook posts and Instagram post impressions are up by 36.3 per cent and 36 Percent compared to the previous month, reaching 17.643 people!

One of our flood posts featuring a 12-month-old black Labrador frolicking in the puddles certainly put a smile on a lot of people’s faces reaching almost 5000 people with 827 engagements, 20 comments and 15 shares. The warning post about mushroom toxicity after the rain certainly drew some attention too, reaching around 9000 people with 353 engagements. This post was shared 50 times which is a great result as the more times posts are shared the more people end up following our pages! Finally, praying for Ukraine on the death of a brave animal warrior reached over 3117 people and was shared 23 times. Naturally enough, Dogs Australia has also been keeping us busy sharing their, ‘Research the Right Breed’ campaign posts too.

in the approval process that relate to animal welfare. The ‘Animal Keeping Code’ makes no reference to animal welfare. In fact, the only reference in this application to this gaol’s inmates is that the facility must be constructed in such a manner “so that dogs are unable to escape.” Dogs Queensland made a submission to the Scenic Rim Council opposing this development application, but we weren’t alone as the council has received approximately 2,600 properly made submissions.

– David Margan Just before Christmas we became aware of yet another development application for an expanded ‘puppy farm’. This time it was before the Scenic Rim Council and was a Colorbond shed to house at least 50 designer dog breeders. The inadequacy of current Queensland State government regulation of these breeding factories is highlighted by the complete absence of any conditions

The Scenic Rim Council is still undertaking an assessment of the proposed development and submissions received and that decision making period will expire on 2 May, 2022, unless further extended. A date has not yet been set for the application to be considered at an ordinary Council Meeting. Perhaps we may be fortunate again, as in the Diamond Valley Kennel’s application to the Sunshine Coast Council where, while council officers recommended approval, the Council out of concern for issues of animal welfare, voted against the application to the tune of 8-1. We’ll keep you posted.

Double Trick Dog Test A big thank you to Royal Canin for sponsorship of the recent fundraising Double Trick Dog Test conducted by the Dances With Dogs Subcommittee on the 26 March 2022. The Caboolture Sports Dog Obedience Club very generously donated the use of their grounds, equipment and facilities for this event. The original date in February had to be postponed as major flooding of South East Queensland caused havoc with the grounds and roads. Still, on a lovely Saturday morning, many happy competitors and their dogs gained qualifications and titles in this newly developed sport. The Subcommittee wishes to thank everyone involved, including those who came along to be stewards, in making this event both very enjoyable and very successful.

SCHEDULE DEADLINE REMINDER

All schedules up to and including September 2022 Shows and Trials should be submitted as soon as possible to the Dogs Queensland office. Please ensure all information is completed including Handlers, Sweepstakes, Nominated Classes etc. Submissions by showmanager.com.au are preferred or email ian@dogsqueensland.org.au.

In keeping with the Dog Queensland Rules and Regulations (42.4 – page 43), clubs are advised schedules are to be submitted to the DQ office at least 3 calendar months prior to the month of publication of the Show Schedule. Please note that schedule advertising must appear in the Dog World magazine 2 months prior to the event (a total of 5 months). Late schedules will appear in the following edition of DQ’s Dog World magazine. For example, the schedule for a show to be held on 8 October 2022 would need to be submitted to the office by 8 May 2022. This allows for the 3 months prior to the schedule being published in the August 2022 Dog World magazine, which is the required 2 months prior to the date of the show. To submit Schedules or for more information contact Ian at ian@dogsqueensland.org.au

DOG WORLD April 2022

THAT’S A EUKANUBA™ DOG.

Unleash the extraordinary in your dog For the last 50 years, we’ve used the power of nutritional science to fuel dogs’ athletic abilities and unleash their full potential. Whether your dog is a show dog, used for breeding, a working professional or a family companion, body condition, nutrition and the environment will influence health and performance throughout their lifetime. We’re driven by the idea that nutrition, dogs’ lives and performance can always be improved. That’s often meant our formulas have broken new ground. We were the first to use beet pulp and key prebiotics to help optimise digestion, the first to use specific levels of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids to help support skin and coat health and we created an antioxidant blend to support immune function and post-exercise recovery. The list of breakthroughs goes on — and our commitment to making the best performance nutrition will as well.
