President’s Message
“
D
ecember was a busy month on quite a number of fronts in our dog world and no doubt on the home front for all of us. I hope that Christmas was a happy time and that you were not too inconvenienced by border requirements with family and friends travelling interstate. I take this opportunity to wish all members a Happy New Year and all the best for 2022. Covid still provides challenges for us as a community. As I type this a notification has just come through about over 11,000 cases being recorded in NSW overnight. The Omicron variant is a disappointing development and underlines the importance of us following the ever evolving government guidelines. It has been great that we have been able to continue a good schedule of conformation dog shows and sports events throughout the State. We have tried to be a bit innovative in the way we respond to increased requirements. An example was the show weekend from 17 to 19 December 2021 at Durack. We had an impressive line-up of events that included Double Rally, Tricks Trial and Championship Shows run by the All Dogs Sports Spectacular Committee and the Durack Grounds Committee as well as specialty shows for the Border Collie Club of Qld Inc. The mandatory check in requirement remained in place but the additional double vaccination requirement on entry had been imposed by the State government. A bouquet to the office that think tanked this requirement and came up with the idea of having printed cards that could be issued to members once proof of double vaccination was provided upon entry. These cards can be presented on subsequent visits to dog events. I did a few long shifts on the gates with Carolyn Ryan and Vicki Schneider and other volunteers, including new Life Member, Ainslie Carius, and numerous office and grounds staff, and can say that this measure really sped up this process. A big thank you to all those who assisted on those

checkpoints. It was a massive exercise over this long weekend. It was a special weekend in a number of ways. In the past we have had a special Christmas sit down dinner for invited guests. This year I thought it would be a better idea to have a Christmas barbeque on the Saturday evening for members and their families. We had nearly 300 people register for the complimentary hamburgers and soft drinks and I know from my “gate duty” that members who had not entered the show also came for the barbeque. A big thank you to Rob Harrison, Michael Yates and Julana Akers for their work on the barbeque! In addition, thank you to Carolyn Pearen, the ADSS Committee, Mandy Schelbach and the Grounds Committee for their time and dedication in organising the shows over the Christmas Carnival weekend. Also, it was a Board decision to have the Sunday Show as a fundraiser for Meegan and Layla, the widow and child of Rohan Ally who tragically died after competing in an agility trial at the Redlands Dog Obedience Club. It was truly heart-warming Continued page 6

seeing little Layla awarding the BIS, RUIS and Baby Puppy in Show awards with the guidance of the General Specials judge, Mr Duncan McAllister. Mr McAllister showed a lovely rapport with Layla. It would have been lovely to have had this on video but Mr McAllister emailed a few days earlier saying he did not give his permission for General Specials to be videoed.
SUPREME COURT PROCEEDINGS
Christopher John Woodrow v Canine Control Council (Queensland) Ltd (Trading as Dogs Queensland) and ASIC. This court action was heard on 28 October 2021 and the decision of Justice Freeburn was handed down on 10 December 2021. His Honour decided that a person who is validly disqualified from membership for misconduct (which Mr Woodrow did not contest), does not thereby cease to be a director. Although the disqualified member cannot stand for election as a director, it is necessary first, that the board determine that he/she ought to be removed and then, second, that the members vote for removal at a Special General Meeting. In the final paragraph 59 of the judgment he states as follows-: “For those reasons, in my view, the proper interpretation of clause 31 requires Dogs Queensland to hold a Special General Meeting, before a Director may be removed from their position”. The question of whether such a Special General Meeting should be called will be decided by the Board at their next meeting on 10 January 2022. Members may be interested in some other aspects of this judgment. In paragraph 3 of his reasons His Honour noted the following history-: “From 14 January 2020, Mr Woodrow was subject of three decisions of an internal panel of Dogs Queensland called the Dogs Queensland Breaches Panel (the ‘Panel’). The first decision of the panel, on 26 September 2019, imposed a penalty of suspension for 21 days because of a social media post published by Mr Woodrow. The second decision of the panel, on 14 January 2020, was that Mr Woodrow’s membership be suspended for 12 months on the
6
DOG WORLD January 2022
basis of a contravention of Dogs Queensland’s social media policy. The third and last decision of the panel, on 25 May, 2020, imposed a further suspension of three years, meaning that Mr Woodrow was suspended for a cumulative term of four years from 14 January 2020” In paragraph 11 His Honour noted that, “Mr Woodrow did not challenge his membership suspensions, or the facts underpinning those suspensions. Instead, Mr Woodrow contends that the suspension of his membership did not bring about the automatic cessation of his directorship.” In paragraph 24, His Honour found that “Rule 14.1(5) makes clear that the effect of a suspension is to immediately nullify the person’s membership but only for the term of the suspension.” His Honour held that “the suspended member loses his status as a member for the period of the suspension”. Mr Woodrow’s contention that his legal status as a member survived his suspension was rejected by His Honour and in paragraph 35, His Honour held that Mr Woodrow’s membership ‘ceased ipso facto’ upon the panel suspending his membership. In paragraph 36, he found that “the words of Rule 14.1(5) are plain enough that a suspended member no longer has the status of a member.” Although His Honour held that being a member of at least 5 years standing is a prerequisite to stand for election as a director, continuing membership is not an ongoing requirement for an elected director during that director’s term of office. His Honour held in paragraph 58 that, “It can be accepted that, for the period of his suspension, Mr Woodrow lost all of the benefits of membership. That included the right to nominate for a position as a director. However, his loss of those benefits has no consequence because he had already been elected as a director and so the regime for removing directors applied.” As stated above, His Honour goes on to state that clause 31 requires Dogs Queensland to hold a Special General Meeting, before a Director may be removed from their position.

Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.

Breeder Alert – Puppy Scam Websites
Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.
An example of a typical scam is: • A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet. • The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix. • A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry. • Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published. • No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website. • The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures. • The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.
As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam: • Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix. • Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate. • Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct in- person contact with you. • Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details. • Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam: • Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland. • Ensure communications are made to verified contact details. • Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments. • If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection. • Check website is an established site with a website security certificate. • Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers. • Ask for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy. Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au.

Board Notes – January 2022 FCI PODCAST: DOG WELFARE CHALLENGE IN THE EU – FIGHTING THE ILLEGAL PUPPY TRADE The illegal puppy trade is one of the most challenging animal welfare and health issues of the current era. What do we know about the black market of pets?
Part of this management team in the FCI is the Board of Directors comprising nine members, and within this group exists a smaller group of three members, called the Executive Committee, consisting of the President, Vice-President and Treasurer.
How can we effectively fight it? Who are the stakeholders in solving this cross-border matter? And how could the buying habits of everyday people change the welfare of dogs? Julie Sanders, the International Director of the Companion Animals Department at Four Paws, gives us a deep insight into the illegal puppy trade in the EU in this episode of The FCI Podcast. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiVACnW-oCs&ab_ channel=FCIforYOUtube

ANKC LTD SURVEY – ROTTWEILER OWNERS In accordance with Item 7.2.1 of the October 2021 ANKC Board meeting minutes an online survey is now available from the link provided on page 9 where ANKC is seeking feedback from owners of Rottweilers regarding the following proposal. The current regulation under Regulations Part 6 The Register & Registrations is as follows: 8.9 Rottweiler
8.9.1 For litters of Rottweilers born where the parents have been born after 1.1.97, these parents must show results of X-rays for hips and elbows. (Amended 10/13 – 5.6.4) Proposal to add as 8.9.2: Effective immediately, any Rottweiler born a Natural Bobtail will be eligible to be registered on the Limit Register only and flagged NOT TO BE UPGRADED. Rationale: The adopted standard (FCI Standard No: 147) for the Rottweiler within Australia has now been updated as of 24 July 2018. A significant change to this updated standard is that it now reflects the length of the tail: “while positioned along the leg, the tail reaches approximately to the hocks or is a bit longer”, and the Natural Bobtail is listed as a disqualifying fault. The following referenced attachments are available from the links provided below: 1. Section of FCI Standard No: 147 – 24/7/2018 listing Natural Bobtails as a Disqualifying Fault. 2. Copy Email from Prof Peter Friedrich outlining the ADRK reasons for not recognising NBT’s in the Rottweiler population. The online survey can now be accessed from: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HR7JS7K The link is also available from the ANKC website at: https://ankc.org.au/AboutUs/?id=3319 Please note responses to the survey are required by COB 7 March 2022.

DOG WORLD January 2022
HISTORY The Bichon Frise, although often considered to be a French breed, was in fact thought to have originated in Spain from water dogs such as the Barbet. It was indeed through its favour in the French courts later that the Bichon Frise gained it’s popularity. Because of their merry disposition, the Bichon Frise often travelled as sailor companions and were often used as items of barter as they moved from continent to continent. The dogs found early success in Spain and it is generally felt that Spanish seamen introduced the breed to the Canary Island of Tenerife. During the 13th century the Italian sailors rediscovered the little dogs on their voyages and are credited with returning them to the European continent, where they became great favourites of Italian nobility. Often, as was the style of the day with dogs in the courts, they were cut “lion style” much like the modern day Portuguese Water Dog. Then known as the “Tenerife” or “Bichon”, the breed gained success in France during the Renaissance period under the reign of Francis I (1515 – 1547). Popularity increased again amongst French nobility as both a court companion and lap dog during the court of Henry III (1574-1589). The breed also enjoyed considerable success in Spain as a favourite of younger children and were often included in portraits of royalty. In particular, Francisco de Goya included Bichons in several of his works.
Miss Beatrix Lister by Sir Joshua Reynolds
Interest in the breed was renewed during the rule of Napoleon III, but then waned until the late 19th century when it became the “common dog” running the streets, accompanying the organ grinders of Barbary (often referred to as the “Barbichon”), leading the blind, and doing tricks in circuses and fairs. After World War I, they had begun to become popular again in France and were bred by French breeders. On 5 March 1933, the official standard of the breed was adopted by the Société Centrale Canine – the National Kennel Club for France. As the breed was known by two names at that time (the Tenerife and the Bichon), the president of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale proposed

a name based on the characteristics that the dogs presented – the Bichon À Poil Frisé which was later shortened to Bichon Frisé. On 18 October 1934, the Bichon Frisé was admitted to the stud book of the Société Centrale Canine. The Bichon was brought to the United States in 1955. The first US-born Bichon litter was whelped in 1956. In 1959 and 1960, two breeders in different parts of the US acquired Bichons, which provided the origins for the breed’s further development in that country. The Bichon Frise became eligible to enter the AKC’s Miscellaneous Class on 1 September 1971. In October 1972, the breed was admitted to registration in the American Kennel Club Stud Book. On 4 April 1973, the breed became eligible to show in the Non-Sporting Group at AKC dog shows. In 2001, a Bichon Frise named J.R. won Best In Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. In the United States, the Bichon Frise was ranked the 40th most popular breed in 2013 according to the American Kennel Club. It would
12
DOG WORLD January 2022
be another 17 years before Flynn the Bichon Frise would once again see the breed take top honours at this prestigious show. The Bichon was introduced into Australia in the 1970s and since its introduction has proved successful as both a show and companion dog. Modern Bichon’s have developed into four main categories: the Bichon Frise, the Maltese, the Bolognese and the Havanese. These are often treated as separate breeds however the Bichon variety breeds are often thought to also include the Lowchen and the Coton De Tulear.
GENERAL INFORMATION A well-bred Bichon Frise is gentle mannered, sensitive, playful and affectionate. Bichons love to jump into a comfy lap and settle in for their daily snooze. Bichons aren’t one of the dogs that when you enter a room will just sit and do nothing – they are energetic and love seeing and pleasing their human companion. A cheerful attitude is a prominent hallmark. Most Bichons
enjoy social interactions with people and other dogs, and are best when there is a lot of activity around them. People who are considering keeping a Bichon Frise as a pet should know that these dogs are smart and playful, but require a great amount of human attention. They are happiest when they are the complete centre of attention. Bichons are non-shedding and are suitable for people with allergies. The Bichon can be difficult to train, but are amazing happy creatures that love company.
CHARACTERISTICS The Bichon Frise is a lively little dog, with eyes alert and full of expression. The soft, fairly round dark eyes should fill the face with appealing pleasantness. One of the characteristics of the breed is the black pigmentation set against the pure white coat of an adult specimen. The black pigmentation should be present in the nose, lips, eye rims, toe nails (though not essential) and pads of the feet. Bichon Frise are well suited to family homes where they have constant companionship. Bichon Frise are first and foremost a companion dog and are most content when spending time curled up on the lounge with their people. They are active and lively and will often get their daily exercise during a spurt of hyperactivity known as the “Bichon Blitz”. Due to their non-shedding coat, the Bichon Frise is often considered a preferrable option for allergy suffers, however it should be noted that their nonshedding coat also means a “high maintenance” grooming routine.

TEMPERAMENT Gay and Happy – The Bichon Frise should convey a feeling of happiness and brightness on sight. They are neither shy nor aggressive. The Bichon must show the temperament required of a companion dog. Due to their need for constant companionship, it is not uncommon for a Bichon Frise to suffer anxiety. It is important that Bichons are provided exposure to varying situations from an early age to avoid potential anxiety issues which is why it is important to ensure that your breeder has given

your Bichon Frise the confidence in all situations. Bichon Frise are best suited to an indoor lifestyle in keeping with their need to always have companionship.
COAT AND GROOMING The Bichon Frise coat is fine, silky, with soft corkscrew curls. This is a double coated breed with an outer coat of longer hair with a short softer dense undercoat. The adult coat is somewhat thicker than the puppy coat. A full coated (or show coated) Bichon Frise requires regular, often daily brushing and combing to maintain the “fluffy round headed” style that is characteristic of the Bichon Frise breed. Many pet owners will opt for either a short pet trim or modified show trim for easier maintenance.

Regular weekly bathing is required to maintain the clean white coat. Regular combing through the coat with both a slicker brush and metal comb is vital to keeping the coat knot free. Combing is often required daily during “coat change” which is the period during which the soft puppy coat develops into the mature dense adult coat. Failure to regularly maintain a knot free coat will result is matting which causes considerable discomfort and potential health issues for your Bichon Frise. Trimming the coat will depend on the style maintained but a regular 4 – 6 weekly schedule with a groomer is highly recommended. This can be done yourself with training however many opt to use professional groomers. The choice of either a clipped style (usually shorter) or a hand scissored style is offered by professional groomers depending on their breed experience. Bichon Frise, like poodles are often a favoured breed for pet stylists due to their thick dense coat which provides an excellent basis for their creativity which in recent years has seen an increased popularity with pet owners for an “Asian fusion” styled trim.
COLOUR AND SIZE Bichon Frise coat colour is white. Some puppies will often have patches of cream / apricot, usually on their ears or head when they are younger but
14
DOG WORLD January 2022
these patches tend to fade to white as the coat matures. A Bichon Frise size should be considered “lapidary”, meaning small enough to fit in your lap. The ANKC standard calls for the breed to be less than 30cm at the wither with smallness being highly desirable.
HEALTH AND LIFESPAN:
Jacqui Cant - Kayani
The Bichon Frise is a relatively healthy breed. Juvenille cataracts was in recent years presenting as a problem within the breed and thanks to the tireless efforts of breeders throughout the world, is becoming less common despite ongoing research projects still unable to isolate any genes within the Bichon Frise breed for specific genomic testing. Bichon Frise are often said to have a problem with “allergies” however this in most instances can probably be attributed to either environmental factors or a diet high in processed preservatives.

The money will help brighten the lives of 230 seriously ill children or young people and ward off the fear, loneliness and isolation of treatment and hospitalisation. Starlight Children’s Foundation was founded in 1982 by filmmaker Peter Samuelson and actress Emma Samms, who was inspired by her brother’s death, at age 8, from aplastic anemia and Steven Spielberg now serves as the organization’s chairman. Has Fido Become Forgetful? As our beloved pets get older, the ravages of age seem to creep up on us. The symptoms of old age are often not noticed until ailments are quite advanced, or pointed out by family or friends who may notice more distinct changes over time. Arthritis, loss of exercise tolerance, blindness and deafness are often associated with age, as too are some quirky and unusual behaviours that many of us attribute to the before mentioned conditions. The fact of the matter is that dogs can suffer from a form of dementia we refer to as cognitive dysfunction syndrome. Cognitive dysfunction syndrome is associated with loss of brain cells, a build up of toxins and damaging free radicals within the brain and possibly even reduced blood flow to the brain. Symptoms are sometimes not obvious until several years after some of these changes begin to occur. Pets may become disoriented or confused in familiar environments. These changes can be as subtle as going to the wrong side of a door or getting lost on a walk. Pets may interact differently with other animals or people, becoming disinterested, less playful or even more irritable. Abnormal sleep-wake cycles are often more easily noticed as they can be quite disruptive to the human inhabitants of the house. This is often manifested as waking and vocalising during the night and often sleeping for the duration

of the day. Loss of learned behaviours for most pets is most easily recognised by loss of toilet training and is often confused with incontinence or difficulty making it outside due to arthritis. Their general activity may alter, ranging from being less active and losing interest in grooming and eating to compulsive disorders such as excessive licking behaviour, pacing and aimless wandering. If cognitive dysfunction syndrome is suspected, a number of measures can be taken to alleviate symptoms. Providing mental stimulation and gentle exercise through games and playing has been shown to slow the progress of cognitive decline. Special diets have been formulated with numerous antioxidants and are proven to improve brain function in patients with cognitive dysfunction syndrome. In addition to this we now have medications available specifically for this condition which improve blood supply to the brain. So while we can’t cure our pets of ‘dementia’, we can certainly take steps to make the world a less confusing place for them. Pets with cognitive dysfunction syndrome are generally elderly and many common ‘old-age’ conditions can produce some of the same symptoms, so it is important to have these problems checked out by your vet and to not assume your pet simply has ‘dementia’.

CYCLONE SAFETY Joanne Bibby – Fursafe® As more and more people become dog owners, the risk of dogs being affected by natural disasters grows. You might have asked yourself: What on earth will my family do if we are affected by a catastrophic event such as a tropical cyclone? Scary stuff! You cannot guarantee that your local Emergency evacuation centre will allow dogs in their facility, and so the question for all pet owners is, ‘Where will my pet stay’? ‘Who will be there to look after our pups’? Other questions you will need to ask yourself are: ‘How will we evacuate safely with our dogs’? ‘What happens if I am at work and my dog is all alone’? ‘What if my dog runs off’? This article will provide you and your family with prompts on how to prepare for, and respond to, cyclone risks in your area, whether that be at home or whilst you are on holidays. These prompts are not exhaustive, but they will put you in the mindset of how to manage before, during and after an uncontrollable event. It is recommended that you communicate with your local Emergency Services Department if you are unsure about anything and that you research past events / disasters in your community. If at any time you are worried about vulnerable family members or not being able to cope, please call Emergency Services for additional guidance! The best form of defence is preparation and practice. Never lose sight of the value of repetition in learning – the more your family practices evacuation, the more

second nature it will be if the time comes when you need to leave. FURSAFE® supports the decision to evacuate early where able. Listen to Emergency Services, weather stations and other local disaster management services in your area. Register for Early Warning Text message / notifications with those agencies to ensure you receive as much warning as possible to prepare, act and survive. You can only prepare to the standard that is available to your family – not everyone can afford a cyclone rated house. Sometimes life happens out of the blue and we barely have a chance to think but try to think of all the things you can do to prepare in advance, that brings you a sense of ‘I’ve done all I can do’, and that the most important thing is to keep ‘my family’ safe.
WHAT IS A TROPICAL CYCLONE? Simply put, a Tropical Cyclone is a high energy storm containing destructive winds and rains. For those of us who live in South East Queensland, the likelihood of having a Cyclone on our doorstep is pretty low, however for the Tropical North of Queensland, cyclones are very common (just think of Larry and Yasi).
•
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said in October 2021 that Queensland may experience an average to slightly-above-average number of tropical cyclones for the 2021–22 Australian tropical cyclone season – a season which runs from November 21 through to April 22.1
•
BOM have identified, that on average, there can be 9 to 11 tropical cyclones each season in Australia, four

First Aid:
of which have the potential to cross the coast.1
Historical data however dating back to the 1970’s show that at least 1 tropical cyclone per year crosses the coast. What this means, Queensland dog owners, is that there is a possibility of four, with the likelihood of one Tropical Cyclone during this season, bringing with it wide spread devastation to people, homes, structures, landscapes, waterways, domestic pets and wildlife.
RATINGS Know your cyclone ratings; for example, Category 1, Category 2, Category 3, Category 4, Category 5 – the higher the rating, the more dangerous the conditions. Category 1: Wind speed of 63 – 88km/h, with wind gust of (less than) < 125. Damaging winds. Category 2 Wind speed of 89 – 117km/h, with wind gust of 125 – 164. Destructive winds. Category 3 Wind speed of 118 – 159km/h, with wind gust of 165 – 224. Very destructive winds. Category 4 Wind speed of 160 – 199, with wind gust of 225 – 279. Significant roofing loss and structural damage. Category 5 Wind speed (greater than) > 200, with wind gust of > 279. Extremely dangerous with widespread destruction.
TROPICAL CYCLONE ADVICES Tropical Cyclone Advices are issued whenever a tropical cyclone is likely to bring with it gale-force winds, within the next 48 hours, in your community. The Tropical Cyclone Advice lets you know when you might be affected. Each community in the path of the cyclone will be issued with either a Watch or Warning advice.
•
approaching the coast is under radar surveillance, the advices may be issued hourly.1
HAZARDS Your dog and other family members may experience the following during and / or after a cyclone passes:
• • • • •
Loss of roof
•
Illness from contaminated floodwaters from sewerage, chemicals, herbicides
Injuries from terrified and aggressive wildlife, snakes, spiders and rodents
• • • • •
Live electrical wires down Eye injuries Flying and falling debris
Dog bites – dog / dog and dog / human Increase in health risks from flies and mosquitos Respiratory illness from mould / dampness Fall from heights, i.e. Slipping due to buildup of mud
Injuries to paws walking on debris and / or through floodwaters
•
Council services such as waste management ceases due to blocked roads
• Death
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Think about the following:
•
Know your risk! Is your home in a cyclone strike zone? Is your home built to the highest standard to withstand a cyclone? Are you in a flood zone?
•
Know your local cyclone alert levels; for example, Watch and Warning.
•
Register for alerts through your local Emergency Services Command and monitor the systems.
A Tropical Cyclone Watch is issued for coastal communities when the onset of gales is expected within 48 hours; and
•
A Tropical Cyclone Warning is issued for coastal communities when the onset of gales is expected within 24 hours or are already occurring.
While the threat remains, a Tropical Cyclone Advice will be issued every six hours, increasing to every three hours when cyclone warnings are required. In some circumstances, when a cyclone

Get yourself a local map of your area if you don’t already have one. Consider the safest routes, listen to news broadcasts or speak with emergency services about road closures.
Do you have a Family First Aid Kit for family? Think about what you will do if a Cyclone approaches your home before you have a chance to evacuate.
•
Always leave early. Leaving late may put you in danger.
HOME PREPARATION
•
Are you prepared to evacuate if your local emergency services instruct you to leave your home?
•
Are your pet’s immunisations up to date? Only immunised dogs can lodge at kennels, pet day care or minding services.
Clear your property of loose material that could blow about and possibly cause injury or damage during extreme winds.

CYCLONE WARNING
•
Tune into your local radio / TV for further information and warnings.
•
Check that neighbours are aware of the situation and are preparing.
•
If requested by local authorities, collect children from school or childcare and dogs from doggy day care, and go home.
•
Ensure your home has sufficient water, food, and other survival items to support your family for a minimum of 72 hours (preferably 2 weeks). Place them in the same area you will be waiting out the storm.
•
Park vehicles under solid shelter with hand brake on and in gear.
•
Put wooden or plastic outdoor furniture in your pool or inside home with other loose items.
• Close shutters, board-up or heavily tape all windows.
• Do not enter flood waters.
• Bring pets inside and secure in safe room / carrier / crate with water and food.
• Heed all warnings and don’t go sightseeing.
• Place sandbags at doorways, or where your property requires them to stop water from entering your home. • Remain indoors. Do not go outside until officially advised it is safe to do so. Tune into local radio stations for official warnings and advice.
CYCLONE IMMINENT – EVACUATION •
Consider these questions: When will you go? What will you take? Where will you go? Do you know how to get there and alternative directions to take? What happens if you become separated or are away from the home?
• Ensure Duty Cards are filled in, with tasks handed out for completion by family members. • Wear strong shoes, long-sleeved shirts and jeans for protection. • Take bedding, books and games for children when evacuating to shelters. • Pack the car with your kits and other items for staying in a shelter or with family / friends. •
Whenever you evacuate, it is always wise to do so at the ‘Watch’ stage to ensure it is safe to travel and all vulnerable members of your family are secure before the cyclone / hurricane hits.
•
If you choose to evacuate to a public shelter, make sure you follow police and emergency services directions. Remember, you cannot rely on a shelter accepting pets, so make plans for them before evacuating.
• Re-check your property for any loose material – tie down or fill with water all large, relatively light items such as boats and rubbish bins. • Lock doors, turn off power, gas and water, take your Grab & Go kits. • Complete and post your EVACUATED poster on the inside of your front window or glass on front door. • Remember! Never drive through flooded river crossings.
AFTER CYCLONE PASSES • Check for gas leaks. • Do not use electrical appliances that have been exposed to water. • Beware of damaged power lines, bridges, buildings, trees.
• Check neighbours and see if they need help. • Don’t make unnecessary phone calls. Text if you need to advise family members of your wellbeing.
DOGS • Have your Fursafe Emergency Grab & Go Kit planned, packed and ready near exit. • Have Fursafe Emergency Dog First Aid Kit packed with Fursafe Emergency Grab & Go Kit. •
Make sure that if you must leave your dog at home during a Cyclone Watch period you keep the pet in the safest room in the house. Provide water, food, carrier / crate, leash and his / her Grab & Go kit. If the dog is then collected by emergency services or a neighbour, everything including your pet is in one safe area.
•
Include dog’s travel documents, completed pet details form, vaccination passport / records, medications, ownership documents (including photo of dog and photo of you with dog) in Fursafe Emergency Grab & Go Kit.
• DO NOT tie your dog up – doing so may cause your pet to become hurt. • Evacuate your dog early on the ‘Cyclone Watch’ day to a third-party minding location if you plan to evacuate the household. •
Make sure that if you take your pet with you that you REMOVE your ICE pet window poster before you leave so you do not waste the emergency services time looking for your pet(s); post an EVACUATED poster in its place.
•
After the storm has passed, release your dog, initially in the home. Survey the outside area to ensure there are no hazards such as sharp objects, dangerous materials, live wires, contaminated water, and feral wildlife before letting them outside after the ALL CLEAR is given by the authorities.
•
If your pet has been traumatised by the event, consider putting the dog in a crate or carrier in a quiet area with fresh water available. Call your vet if your pet doesn’t seem to be settling down.

Scent Work - Sniffing for fun
– Silke Weyland
A new fascinating dog sport has taken Australia by storm – the ANKC Scent Work. This sport is based on the work of actual working detection dogs. The dogs are trained to recognise specific odours and communicate to their handler when the odour has been found. Dogs have up to 300 million scent receptors in their brain compared to humans with 5 million, catapulting the dogs into the top range of supersniffers in the animal kingdom. When we walk our dogs in the park, they barely lift their nose off the ground pulling us with excitement, seemingly erratic, all over the place. This is not erratic at all but a bit like reading the newspaper for the dog. They detect what is happening right now, what did happen a while ago and what is approaching, giving them a much broader picture of the environment than humans. Dogs see their world through their sense of smell and we take advantage of this highly evolved skill. Humans and dogs have developed successful working relationships whether this is working in the Health Industry detecting Cancer or Covid, clearing mine fields in the Armed Forces or sniffing out drugs for Customs.
Above: Rieka and Mark Thomsett at a training session for vehicle search in the CCKC.
In the dog sport of Scent Work, the dogs are allowed to use their strongest natural sense, the sense of smell, in a fun and challenging way. Scent Work is an all positive, engaging activity, great fun for dogs and handlers alike, furthering the relationship and trust with your 4-legged friend. Dogs and Handlers of all ages, breed, size and ability can participate with no prior training required. You and your dog work as a team. In most other dog sports the dog has to obey commands, performing the exact cues from the handler in order to succeed with the task. In olfactory-based sports like Scent Work and Tracking, the handler takes a step back, and only gives guidance and help to the dog when needed. The dogs are taken through different environments in their searches to find the hidden odours. They search around luggage and cars, in closed rooms and outdoor scenarios. When a dog has detected the odour, it communicates to the handler the exact location with a distinct indication and the task is completed. Communication, praise and rewards while the dogs are searching is encouraged.

SCENT WORK IN REVIEW The Cairns City Kennel Club is the only Club in the Far North offering regular Scent Work Classes for Beginners and Advanced and conduct regular workshops. The response is substantial – all classes are always full and booked out in advanced. In the Beginner training we create the drive / motivation with scent exposure. Using a cocktail of all 4 scents, the dogs are rewarded equally for every scent and learn to identify all scents at the same time. With a High Value Reward System in place (food / toy), the handlers have to learn a flawless reward delivery to achieve the perfect alert indication. When the dog clearly shows a solid commitment to the scent, we work on confidence and the duration of the alert indication before we can move on to the Advanced training. At this level, the Scent has become the Highest Value for the dog. The Advanced training builds on teamwork in real searches of all elements from Novice to Master level. The dogs advance at a different pace. Some stay for several months in the Beginner Class, whereas others only need a few sessions to move on. This does not matter – at the end we are all at the same place having a lot of fun with our furry friends.

CAIRNS CITY KENNEL CLUB The Cairns City Kennel Club will have 4 trials per year, offering all classes that apply next year – Novice/Advanced/Excellent on all Elements. Two of our trials next year will be in a different venue to offer interesting and challenging search areas. The Tablelands will offer 1 trial per year – which makes it 5 trials so far for the Far North. Vale Cristina Fornasier
Leanne Parsons Photography
Crissy moved to Townsville in the mid 90’s and after a break, again became involved in dog showing joining the two local clubs – Townsville Kennel Association and Thuringowa City Kennel Club, taking on committee positions. She never refused help when asked and throughout her illness, whenever there were community breed displays, handling classes and photography events or stewarding, she was always there. Crissy was passionate about responsible and ethical breeding practices and took part in a couple of local radio interviews promoting pure bred dogs and the hobby of dog showing.
The NQ and Central Qld community were shocked and saddened to hear of the unexpected passing of Crissy Fornasier on 18 November 2021 – a committed stalwart of showing for many years.
Her dogs were her passion but she also developed her skills with photography and graphic design and integrated these skills into the show scene. Many breeders owe their kennel designs and advertisements to Crissy. She spent countless hours photographing dogs in the ring and at play with their owners, with at times hilarious candids of owners and dogs. Crissy also used her talents to collate and make special mementos for people celebrating their wins or just because…. It was an always unexpected and a beautiful gift.
Crissy had been very passionate about Juniors right from the early days in Mt Isa. She was always willing to mentor new and junior handlers and guide them through the intricacies of ring Cristina Fornasier grew up in Mount Isa and whilst procedure and etiquette. Her patience with a teenager joined the Mount Isa Kennel Club with her 2 dogs, a German Shepherd Dog called Pharaoh children was unsurpassed and she always made dogs available for junior handlers to use in and a Doberman. This Dobe, Chaka, was her first and main ‘heart’ dog. She always referred to him as competition. My Chaka – and this is where her prefix came from After her Chaka passed away Crissy came to her – Mychaka. next great loves: the Sighthounds – Whippets, Crissy was active in Obedience and conformation events and travelled to shows on offer. The distance travelled were not to be sneezed at. Mt Isa to Cloncurry, a measly 120kms whilst Mt Isa to Charters Towers was a staggering 769kms. Occasional trips to Townsville shows entailed an approximate 10 hour trip and 900 kms each way. So travelling to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne for breed specialities, distance meant very little to Crissy. She was very involved with club activities and held various positions in the club.

Vale Rohan Jason Ally 1973- 2021
Eventually, Rohan and his family moved from South Africa to Australia on New Year’s Eve in 1990, arriving to start their life in a new country with the new year in 1991. They settled in the Gold Coast region and most of his family remain in that area now. Rohan started his journey in the pedigree dog world over 20 years ago, initially trialling Border Collies in the obedience ring. He soon found that his passion lay with agility. Over the years, Rohan went on to become an enthusiastic pupil and later instructor at various clubs in the Gold Coast and southern Brisbane regions. Among it all, Rohan was a self-employed businessman and dedicated family man. He was a natural and loving father to three wonderful children – Hadassah and Levi from his first relationship, and Layla with wife Meegan. He always found time for his faith, remaining in touch with the Church through his youngest daughter’s day care at King’s Church. He was a fantastic cook – I remember shows where Rohan had been up since 1 or 2 in the morning, cooking food and baking treats for us and preparing some of his delicious cocktails. Rohan was the ultimate dog sport competitor, competing in various disciplines including Agility and games, Conformation Showing, Obedience, Rally Obedience and Lure Coursing. He was a supportive, competitive and gracious sportsman – win or lose. Rohan has campaigned Perrioak Borders Collies and both Aprilraine and Lidlriva Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers. He was a skilled handler and both he and his dogs were quick learners at all they put their minds to.
Colleen Neumann Photography
Rohan Ally was born in South Africa on August 21, 1973. His family never planned to have dogs but this soon changed when Rohan started feeding a stray dog the left overs after his family had dinner. Before long, the dog was renamed Lucky and became part of the family, though Rohan always remained Lucky’s favourite.
Rohan was a supportive husband to Meegan. Meegan has had many medical issues whilst they were together and Rohan was with her every step of the way, taking her to doctors’ appointments, being her daily driver, doing all the little things that we take for granted. Rohan and Meegan have recently bred their first Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever litter under the prefix Tollerflare. Unfortunately, Rohan will not have the opportunity to see their first litter compete for Best of Breed however we hope that his girls will continue to make the occasional appearance in the show and sporting rings. On 6 November 2021, Rohan suffered a major cardiac arrest while competing at Redlands Dog Obedience Club’s Agility Trial. Despite the best efforts of first responders at the club and the paramedics that arrived, sadly he never recovered and passed away with his loved ones by his side on 10 November 2021. He was a dedicated family man and dog owner. His sudden passing has shocked so many and left a hole in the agility community especially, where he was so well loved and respected. Rohan is survived by his three young children as well as his wife Meegan. We miss his big smile, big laugh and gentle nature. Great run, Rohan. – Kirstie Kettleton, sister-in-law

Vale Carol Speed
A long time member of the dog world, Carol passed away unexpectedly on the 8 November 2021. Carol was an experienced all breeds judge who had judged all over Australia as well as overseas. I first met Carol in 1993 when she knocked on my door in Childers and met my Mini Long Dachshunds. At the time she was well known for her Australian Cattle Dogs which she had been breeding and showing since the 70’s. It wasn’t long before she had one of my Kajmytt Dachshunds and then another from Shasdin Kennels. She went looking for a suitable stud and whilst judging in N.S.W spotted Karen Glandfords’ boy Ch Midaka Huck Fin and so began her long friendship with Karen and the beginning of her Dachshund breeding under the Kimscott prefix.
At this time she also had Affenpinschers which she showed. Carol continued her Mini Long lines by importing a bitch from Mistydale Kennels in New Zealand. During this time she also became interested in Standard Longs and they became her favourites. While judging in N.Z. Carol fell in love with a Standard Long, NZ Ch. Kernoel Eyes of a Warrior (Locky). She brought him back to Australia and he has produced some great Best in

Show winners.
Carol loved judging and would always put her hand up to fill in or steward when needed. She was always there with a kind word or advice for exhibitors and would take beginners under her wing. She especially loved the baby puppies and would follow them through their show careers to see how they fared. She was certainly a character with a great sense of humour and would always say it as she saw it. Her family were very important to her and much of her time was spent with her grandchildren. Her son Ben had recently started showing her dogs for her and she was really looking forward to him hitting the show ring in a big way in 2022. I’m sure if Carol was writing this she would like to give thanks to Mark and Jo Yardley for all their help in recent years and more recently Brett Schonknecht for his help in ferrying her around and helping out with grooming and showing. Her health had been declining but she was still keen to be out amongst it. Carol had many friends in the show world and she will be sadly missed. Her friends covered all groups and breeds and she loved going to shows just to catch up with them. Our condolences to all her family and friends. Cheryl Farley and Karen Glandford
Vale Lyn Durrington
Never one to shy away from competitions, Lyn travelled to many dog shows, locally and interstate including Sydney and Melbourne Royals and of course the Ekka – Queensland’s own Royal. On one of these occasions, the Sydney Royal, Lyn’s Oliver Ch. Eloucher aTouch oPryde, won BOB and had to return several days later fror Group Specials. It was quite a lengthy walk from the parking area and Oliver made good use of the exercise as he had been confined for a few days through travelling. Into the main area went Lyn and Oliver. As each dog came into the ring, the announcer would tell the audience about each of the breeds. The stands were packed with the general public eager to see the different types of dogs there were. He started, “and now, we have the Clumber Spaniel, let’s see what he can do”. Well, he showed them alright. Oliver did the biggest poop I have ever seen. The crowd broke out into laughter at Oliver’s efforts. Lyn took this all in her stride and we had many a laugh in years to come each time we recalled that show and Oliver’s star performance. Lyn bred many Clumber champions and again had great success in the show ring, but no matter, win or lose, Lyn always left the ring with the best dog.
Sadly, Lyn’s health started to deteriorate and she was told to curtail her activities which she did for a while but being a fiercely independent woman and of Scottish heritage of which she was so proud, her stubbornness saw her back in the ring showing her Clumber Paddington. Again, she was happy doing what she loved, showing her beloved Clumber. Always there to help and guide a person new to the breed or just to talk about them was Lyn.

The dog world is a much sadder place now as Lyn is no longer here with her cheeky smile and wicked sense of humour and always her willingness to help where needed.
Apart from the Cockers, Lyn also owned and showed Field Spaniels, plus a Sussex Spaniel. Though Lyn loved all her different breeds of dogs, the breed that was to become her heart breed was the Clumber Spaniel.

All canine topics are accepted whether they be unusual, quirky or factual and can include ‘paw-friendly’ walks and cafes, heart-warming tales or antics while in lockdown to name a few. Dogs Queensland would like to showcase your dog’s story to the wider canine community. To see your story published simply send it through to barbara@ dogsqueensland.org.au

3 month old Clumber Spaniel, so with dog in hand we arrived at our first dog show. It wasn’t long before I was befriended by a Cocker Spaniel breeder, Lyn Durrington who immediately gave me a show lead and pointed out what was expected of me in the show ring. Her advice helped us take out Baby Puppy In Show, and so my career and a lifelong friendship was ignited. For the first 5 long years Monty was the only Clumber being shown in Queensland until I imported English Show Champion Raycroft Society Girl from the famous Raycroft kennel in the UK. Lyn began her involvement with Clumbers taking a puppy from our first litter and another 2 from subsequent litters. With her passion and unending love for the breed she started her very own successful breeding program with many more memorable puppies to follow. Her incredible knowledge of pedigrees and the English Breed Standard was amazing … second best would not do, close enough was not good enough as her breeding would constantly show. Lyn’s relaxed temperament and sense of humour (not unlike a Clumber Spaniel) led to some interesting times. Driving through the night to Wollongong, then picking up our beautiful Oliver from the litter then driving back home through the night. Flying to Melbourne to take possession of our Abbey Rose or standing under a coloured umbrella, as you do, in the pouring rain waiting for group specials, only to look down and see different coloured patches on a white Clumber or tripping over the tent rope when called for general specials causing the tent to collapse on Lyn, myself and dogs resulting in a grin from judges and stewards! I think at times they made allowances for Clumbers … Lyn’s generosity was legendary – there was no animal (and there were many that crossed her path) that were not loved and cared for with the greatest of devotion … everyone who knew and loved her are richer for the experience. Sleep peacefully our friend … you will be missed. Sherril Dalitz – Grashez Clumbers

THAT’S A EUKANUBA™ DOG
Nutrition that helps fuel your dog’s performance Dogs that show and perform need high quality nutrition to help fuel and sustain their performance throughout the day. A diet with high quality protein is important to help maintain and rebuild muscle integrity, in-fact around about 30% of this protein is used to help maintain a healthy skin and coat. The diet also needs to be enriched with omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids to help with the structural and barrier properties of skin and provide a shiny coat. Show and performance dogs also need a diet to help minimise oxidative stress and add support to the digestive system to help them perform at their best. Eukanuba’s™ NEW Premium Performance Sport and Exercise are designed to meet the needs of show and performance dogs, and is now made in Australia. With added levels of omega oils, digestive support and joint support*, Eukanuba™ is providing tailored nutrition to help to show and performance dogs achieve their best. *Compared to old formula
