Kirkdell Labradors was established in 2000 and has achieved considerable success in the show ring over the past 20 years. From the very inception, we have exclusively fed Royal Canin products. Our Labradors have thrived on Royal Canin from conception through all stages of life. Our adults are conditioned on Energy 4800 while our lactating bitches are fed Maxi Starter, keeping them in prime condition as they feed the pups. Our puppies thrive on Starter Mousse and Maxi Starter until they are transitioned to Maxi Puppy Active before going home to their new families. I have been a proud Royal Canin Ambassador for over 10 years now and love getting compliments about the condition of my dogs and how well they look, all as a result of the Royal Canin they are fed.

President’s Message

I

t has been a tumultuous week for so many of us with this “rain bomb” sitting over South East Queensland for so many days and causing significant flooding. I know that many of our members have been affected and our hearts go out to them.

Ours is a supportive community in times of crisis and it has been great to see members rallying to the assistance of others. Whilst Facebook can have its downside it has proven to be a great communication tool over this last week, linking up those in urgent need with those close at hand who can help with members and their dogs. I encourage members to continue to use the Dogs Queensland Members Page as a notice board where they think that other members may be able to assist in a practical way. We will be monitoring these posts to see whether Dogs Queensland can also help. There was also a Dogs Queensland message on 1 March 2022 reminding members and affiliated clubs that we have a Disaster Relief Fund. Whilst insurance cover may eventually go some way towards replacing the essential items, we also realise that there is a need for immediate access to funds to ensure that our members’ dogs are kept safe and cared for. This is absolutely critical. The cost of temporary boarding, feeding, replacement of secure fencing / kennel runs, veterinary care and transport are all very real expenses confronting our members across the State. So we have invited our clubs/members who have been directly affected by this tragic event to apply for immediate financial assistance using the previously established Dogs Queensland Disaster Relief Fund. Please use the attached Dogs Queensland application form (link below) to submit your request for assistance and it will be processed as a priority. https://emarketing-au.s3-ap-southeast-2. amazonaws.com/59095/jDIQ42RaUyQWd_ NLPMaOiUybBcz1t_rpUXXEN5gNbaM/2703062.pdf

Dogs Queensland has also acceded to a request from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services to use our Durack Sportsgrounds as a base for up to 30 Fire Appliances and their volunteer and employed crews over the next three weeks during the response to this flood disaster. Working together for good outcomes for our community is what it is all about.

Ukraine

I think that we have all been affected by the events unfolding with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Our dog community is part of an international dog community and I thought I would share with you the attached letter (click here to access the link) sent by the Ukrainian Kennel Union to the FCI. We are both members of the FCI- the Federation Cynologique Internationale. In response the FCI has cancelled any FCI shows or awards in Russia and has established a fund to directly support the dog people in need in Ukraine. We will provide more information about this initiative when it is to hand.

Life Memberships

It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the 3 recipients of Life Memberships for 2021. They have each made, and continue to make, huge contributions to our dog world on a voluntary basis. • Ms Ainslie Carius • Mrs Linda Halliwell • Mr Peter Mayne

Dogs Queensland Dog Sports Awards

I enjoyed attending these 2020/21 awards over a clubhouse lunch on Sunday 20 February 2022. It was a very special event well supported by many clubs with their own decorated tables. Our Vice President Barb Murfet, who makes a huge contribution to our Dog Sports, was in good form and it was great to see Senior Vice President Carolyn Pearen there with Director Carolyn Ryan as “official photographer”. There were many special moments but a poignant one was the 2020 award of Track and Search Grand Champion to Debbie Schmidt’s German Shepherd dog “Furi”. Debbie had flown down from Townsville specially for the day to receive the award. Her mentor had been the well-known Mal Holland who sadly died recently. And the award was in memory of Furi too as he has since died.

Breeder Alert – Puppy Scam Websites Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government. Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.

An example of a typical scam is: • A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet. • The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix. • A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry. • Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published. • No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website. • The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures. • The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.

As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam: • Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix. • Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.

These are very special partnerships and wonderful to see them recognised at these award events. A bouquet to the organisers of this most enjoyable event.

Stay safe.

Ulla Greenwood, President Dogs Queensland 2 March 2022

• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct in-person contact with you. • Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details. • Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

FCI PODCAST: FCI YOUTH COMMISSION In this episode, Gopi Krishnan speaks with Dominika Hradská, a representative of the FCI Youth Commission. Created by the FCI General Committee in 2015, this Commission serves to create activity and education for the younger generation involved in pedigree dogs and also targeting dog-loving youth outside the FCI circle, to showcase the world of the FCI and pedigree dogs and to get them involved with the activities that are on offer by the FCI, for them and their dogs. In this interview, we get to hear their aims and visions for this extremely important FCI commission for the youth importantly led by the youth! There has always been a fair amount of assumptions made about the largest global organisation for Pedigree Dogs, so this series of the FCI Podcast Channel titled “Inside the FCI” aims to shed light and dispel assumptions about this international organisation that stands For Pedigree Dogs Worldwide! Comprising of ninety-eight member countries globally, the FCI is the largest global organisation for Pedigree Dogs covering almost every area of interest with dogs from conformation dog shows to dog sports and hunting trials. But to keep such a large organisation working effectively will take a mountain of people to be involved in each area of specific interest. In the FCI, these committees or groups are known as FCI Commissions. They comprise of volunteers from that particular area or expertise or field who dedicate their time and efforts to ensuring that their respective areas of interest are served with the sole aim being for the benefit of pedigree dogs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAU6k6mvnTs&ab_ channel=FCIforYOUtube

DOG WORLD March 2022

Katrina Santas – Hunkeedori Keeshonds

HISTORY: The Keeshond (although originally known as, the Dutch Barge Dog) is a Spitz type breed of ancient origin that has been traced back to prehistoric times with fossils found from the stone age in the lakes of Switzerland, Moscow and Scandinavia as far back as 5000BC. There are relics of wine jugs made in Athens with clear and distinct etchings of this type of dog on the pottery dated 400BC. Today, the breed is developed and thus recognised as its own entity as the Keeshond, a member of the Spitz breeds family with its grey black glamourous coat, easy going but fun nature and being an exceptionally quick learner. The breed is actually a German breed of more recent centuries past that travelled on coal and other cargo barges into Holland, but through greater development and notoriety in (the now known as) the Netherlands is considered today thus a Dutch breed. The breed changed its name from the Dutch Barge Dog to Keeshond through its more modern and controversial history of being the mascot for the Eighteenth-Century middle class Dutch Revolutionary, Cornelius de Gyselaer, who unsuccessfully attempted to overthrow the House of Orange in 1781. The dog’s name was changed by his followers as recognition of its symbol to the Dutch Patriot Party to “Cornelius’ Dog” or “Kees Hond” (Kees being short for Cornelius) and is actually pronounced “Kayz Hond” as opposed to the regular English pronunciation as “Keish Hound”. Due to the conflict, the breed was near driven to extinction but through local nurturing and then export onto other countries, the breed is certainly thriving and enjoyed as a loving companion across the world today.

boats (hence Barge Dog) as the family companion but as the watch or sentry of the boat as well. Although occasionally known for limited herding and farm work, their primary development was that of Barge Dog. Their high-pitched and loud bark combined with extremely sensitive ears and a very quick and sure foot, let any owner know of the imminent arrival of a friend or foe to the barge but also in the fog on the rivers of other boats on the water as they travelled through limited sight. As one dog barked and the next responded on the other vessels, the barges could manoeuvre the waters without drama. These days, a Keeshond owner knows they need no doorbell as their dog will always let them know when guests arrive with a very exuberant greeting. The modern-day Keeshond that we now know and love across the world has become more recognised and considered as a companion pet rather than a working watch dog particularly once they were introduced into the UK in the early twentieth century by Mrs Wingfield Digby where she developed the breed, started the first Keeshond Club of England and gained UK Kennel Club breed recognition in 1925. Mrs Wingfield Digby was also fondly remembered for her walking her dogs within the grounds of the family’s Sherborne Castle and having them constantly by her side as true companions and beautiful friendly minders. From there the breed was exported into the USA, Canada and then Australia post WWII. The Keeshond, as a Spitz breed, is most closely

related (from the array of Spitz type breeds) to their smaller cousins, the German Spitz (Mittel and Klein) and the even smaller, Pomeranian and on the larger side, the Wolf Spitz … although all considered separate breeds worldwide today, under the FCI breed standards, they are all considered as one breed standard with various heights and colours as their defining breed parameters.

TEMPERAMENT: Known also as the Smiling Dutchman, the Keeshond when it’s happy or being cheeky will curl its upper and even sometimes its lower lips and reveal its teeth to smile at you … those unexpecting of this at first think this is aggression but soon learn that it’s play or cuddle time to the Keeshond. The Keeshond is a great friend and buddy to any loving household. They are loyal yet like to push the boundaries, loving yet stubborn at times, cuddly yet cheeky, adaptable in all senses of the word yet like to think it was their idea to try change, quick learners yet get bored easily, reward driven yet food-a-holics … this breed is fun and loved by all their owners … but don’t give into those cute and loving eyes or your Keeshond will be the boss of you before you know it! This breed are very quick learners which also make them stubborn as repetition is not really their thing … they like a challenge, a game, something that interacts them with you as you are their best mate and they want to be your all. Puppy school is fun and always great to teach puppy and the owner a few great tips for learning, but many a Keeshond puppy has been sent to the naughty corner for getting bored and rough housing with the other pups as the trainer has taken too long to teach the next trick. Thus, throughout their life, teach them new things and don’t keep repeating it … keep those training sessions short and the challenge will be met, learnt and remembered, but if no reward is given at the end you might have a cheeky Keeshond do the opposite to what you just taught it … have fun and keep laughing as you are going to be entertained as you go! Keeshonds love to be the centre of attention,

they are beautifully stunning to look at when all groomed up in their big coats … so do not expect a quick trip to Bunnings if you take them with you as be assured you will have everyone wanting to give them a pat and they will expect a pat from everyone just as much. Do not expect to own this breed and have them as an outside dog only. This breed must be part of the family and household or you will have a noisy and destructive dog … but with their loving temperament and tactile coats - you will want to stroke, pat and cuddle up to them everyday … those that think this breed will not win your heart and will only be laying on the floor beside you … give up now as you are sure to let them lay on the lounge with you or take over half the bed as they will always win you over with those adorning eyes and cheeky ways. Males are always loving and will be your shadow. Females will generally be more independent. Although these are general traits between the sexes, they are not rules of thumb. The local household environment and the way you interact with your Keeshond as a puppy form the start will be the way your temperament in your Keeshond will be throughout its life. Do Keeshonds get aggressive? A Keeshond should never be an aggressive breed. They can and will guard their owners and their small children friends if needed, but in general they very much enjoy the company of people and a range of fur friends such as other dogs of all breeds, cats, rabbits and even chickens and other farm animals when introduced correctly. It is known that a Keeshond is a great watch dog and will alert you when visitors arrive, but that bark and standing their ground attitude soon stops when you say hello to that friend and invite them in, then the Keeshond also wants to be their best friend too.

THINGS KEESHONDS EXCEL IN: Keeshonds certainly excel in cheekiness, beauty and brains. They love dog sports as they love to play, so agility is great, but training sessions need to stay short to keep the attention span for obedience. Keeshonds have also done well in tracking and endurance test work in Australia. Showing a Keeshond is also very rewarding as

they will give their all as they know they are going to be groomed multiple times (or to them, massaged by you), you are going to give them all your attention and reward them with food often … and when they are all groomed and if sound and of good breed type, are often viewed by judges as potential high placements. Keeshonds due to their tactile coats, great easy temperaments, adaptability and love of people / other dogs make them ideal service dogs too. Many have been trained as therapy and service dogs across the world and here in Australia. From being an alert dog for children with life threatening disabilities; to comfort dogs for people in therapy, hospital or nursing homes; to even individual support service dogs. A Keeshond was even part of the service team to the rescue crews during the 911 atrocity. Overall, Keeshonds also excel in being great family pets as they were primarily bred to be companions to humans. They are great at keeping the floor clean under the dining room table and convincing all your guests that it’s ok to feed them treats.

KEESHOND COLOURS: Keeshonds come in one colour combination

18

DOG WORLD March 2022

but there are various shades of lighter to darker markings. The only colours associated with the Keeshond should be cream, grey and black. They have an agouti coat whereby the hair follicle on the guard hair (or outer coat) is lighter at the base and transitions to black at the ends to produce that outer harsher coat. Their undercoat which is thick, abundant and softer to the touch than the outer coat is from light cream to light grey, often referred to as silver but not a word used in the breed standard these days, but silver is a light shade of grey. Part of the interesting colour marking in the Keeshond is one that they are known especially for … their spectacle markings and shadings around their eyes which is uniquely distinct about this breed. The Keeshond should never be any tawny colouring (like the colour of a flat white coffee) in their coats once an adult and over twelve months of age. Sometimes puppy coats may have a darker cream colour in their undercoat (and often just before they blow their puppy coat to transition to adult coat as the undercoat dies off/loosens ready to drop out) but they can often loose this (considered) puppy tawniness and come back

into an adult coat with much cleaner undercoat colouring. Likewise, there should be no white markings nor a white undercoat in a Keeshond. Having said that, there are lines that have been known to produce full white Keeshonds from time to time, it is rare, but can happen and would not be considered to be able to be shown in the conformation show ring as the colour is not recognised in the breed standard.

COAT AND GROOMING A KEESHOND: The Keeshond coat changes dramatically in the first year of a puppy’s life. From born black, straight tailed and short coated to looking like mini adults at 8 weeks old. The puppy Keeshond by four months goes through what is generally termed in the breed as the monkey uglies. This is when all the undercoat grows its thickness and depth and overtakes the outer darker and harsher top coat / adult guard hairs … hence the creamy body but the black mask of the face remains and so the Keeshond puppy will look a little foreign to the unexpected and a little like a monkey coloured dog. By six months you will see the guard hairs growing and the Keeshond look starting to come back. By 10 months a stunning puppy in bigger coat starts to return to looking like a young adult as they begin to turn 12months old. The Keeshond could be called the lazy man’s poodle. Why? Because they have a stunningly beautiful full coat, but there is no trimming (only the feet and hocks) and as a spitz breed, they have a very forgiving coat to groom. You can groom the undercoat quite harshly to remove the loose excess and it will come away and grow again just as quick. The breed tends to drop their coat, typical of most spitz breeds, in the heat of summer for males and usually with each season for females. A neuter or spayed Keeshond can grow an excessive and soft coat when desexed later in life rather than as a puppy and will generally be like the entire males and drop coat once a year in the heat of summer. You do not need to be an expert groomer to groom the Keeshond, just part the coat to ensure you groom through to the skin not just sweep over

the top of the coat. When maintenance grooming you can groom in any direction that is easiest for you then at the end just groom the body coat forward and the chest and trousers downwards and you have the finished beautiful looking lion or lioness style coat depending if you have just groomed a male or female Keeshond. For ease and as a great pet / human relationship it is recommended to give a mid week light groom (such as having the Keeshond lay on your lap whilst you watch tv) and a good weekly thorough groom. This thorough groom will likely be up to an hour for the newer owner when the Keeshond is an adult but as they get better and more use to what they do is usually about half an hour to thoroughly go through. Considered like roof insulation, the Keeshond coat keeps their body naturally warmer in winter

20

DOG WORLD March 2022

as it thickens up and cooler in summer as it thins out. The traditionist Keeshond owner shuns the thought of shaving a Keeshond off but if a coat is not groomed completely and left for many months without care both the coat condition may be so poor and the skin of the dog may gain infections that they may have to be clipped. Thus, if an owner is not prepared to do some regular grooming and maybe consider a three or six month professional groom to ensure their dogs skin and coat is healthy, then maybe this breed could be a bit too much to handle coat wise, for them. The Keeshond coat is considered low allergenic as it is a dry wool coat and great for people with allergies too. When wet, the Keeshond smells like a wet wool jumper but when dry returns to that “no doggy” smell. Once dry also, the coat

naturally drops that sand or dirt from the roll in the yard or that digging session when they helped you garden … so in general, the coat stays reasonably clean and odour free and as such as a pet only requires a maintenance bath every 6 to 8 weeks. The religious show person though will likely bath and groom their Keeshond before most shows to present the coat in its most outstanding form.

THE SIZE OF KEESHONDS: The Keeshond has a single height requirement for males and females, that is, there is no height range. In older breed standards there use to be but in the modern standard a male stands and is measured at the wither as 18 inches / 46cm tall and a female 17 inches / 43cm tall. As a breeder would know, breeding to a defined height is extremely difficult and there is going to be variation as much as a breeder will try to strive for uniformity in height. The old breed standard allowed an inch in either side of the height requirement, but today there is no such luxury so a little leeway is required within reason for the conformation ring, but for companion pets, height does not change the loving nature of the breed.

WHO ARE BEST SUITED OWNERS FOR A KEESHOND: As the Keeshond is such an adaptable companion breed, they really are a great breed to a wide range of people to have as their own loving pet as long as they are prepared to a few realities about this breed. Those realities are … must be part of the family lifestyle, challenged with training and activity, groomed regular, and patted and smooched often – but not to be let to get away with everything!

watch tv and be a lounge lizard with through to going jogging or walking with them also find this breed ideal. Keeshonds are fine in dense city living such as in apartments as they are generally very clean dogs and love going out for their walks. Likewise, a town house or general house block is great as there is plenty of space from the large to smaller blocks for outdoor and indoor play sessions too. Acreage is fine as long as the owner is prepared to make sure there are no burr style weeds as they are attracted like Velcro to the coat of the Keeshond. Grey nomads love a Keeshond as the Keeshond loves car rides, so travelling in Australia is always a new adventure with another fun car ride for the Keeshond.

THE LAST WORD: The Keeshond is a wonderfully adaptive breed and sometimes overlooked by prospective owners as they are frightened by the coat and the assumed amount of work to maintain it. In fact, this breed is therapeutic and easy to groom if done regularly; leaves less hair around the home, on the furniture and in the car that short coated breeds; and will always love you no matter what. A lint roller may become your best friend in shedding season but that’s only because you wanted another cuddle from your best mate because you couldn’t resist their love for you. So, if you like fun with a bit of challenge, true friendship, a loving companion nature and want fluffy cuddles in your life, then maybe a Keeshond is the next breed for you to consider.

Keeshonds are wonderful with children and will sit up in bed for story time or lay back and be groomed to have bows in their hair too. Likewise, they are great tactile comforters for older generations who like to have some company. They adapt well to supporting people with disabilities when trained for service work in a range of areas. Families with teenage kids keep the family on their toes as everyone will have their role and job with the Keeshond of the house. Single people or couples of all ages that want a companion to

SPINAL INJURY TRAUMA Joanne Bibby – Fursafe®

gives enough length for the dog to be comfortable and change position, but not long enough that they can fall out the window.

Spinal cord injuries are a common problem in dogs. Injury to the spine can be as a consequence of a fall from height, road accident trauma, physical abuse trauma, infection, compression from tumour and other medical conditions.

Never let your dog walk on the road unless you are supervising and they are on a leash.

Although every dog is at risk of a spinal injury especially from traumas as mentioned above, breeds with long backs are at greater risk; for example, the Dachshund.

Keep your dog’s leash short when walking along the footpath or crossing the road.

If you carry your dog, always make sure you have a firm grip or that they are secured in a carrier – if they fall to the ground they are at risk of spinal injury.

Undertake a weekly health assessment on your dog. Inspect them from their nose to tail; look, listen, smell and feel for abnormalities.

Maintain regular Veterinary check-ups.

The overall outcome of such a trauma is based on the severity of the damage and the time it takes between ? the injury and getting to advanced veterinary care for surgical intervention. The spinal cord communicates to and from the brain to create movement, sensation, urination and defecation. The consequences of spinal cord injury include weakness or paralysis, pain and incontinence – a terrible existence for anyone. As dog owners we must reduce the chances of injury to our dogs. The following safety precautions are very straight forward and yet imperative to ensure our dog remains safe from such an injury.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Always ensure your dog is secured at all times when travelling in the car. Make sure the tether

Spine has a crooked or distorted appearance. Dog experiences no feeling at area of deformity. Paralysed.

ACTION Consider spinal injury for all impact trauma to head, neck or body. 1. Undertake Primary Assessment.

(a) Monitor your dog’s breathing

(b) Monitor their heart beat

2. While waiting for assistance to move dog, calm your dog, talking in a soothing manne. Restrict movement, cover with warm blanket and remain calm yourself. 3. When transporting dog to vet surgery, make sure the head and neck are supported. Make sure dog’s body is supported by a second person. 4. Place dog on a secure surface (e.g. wooden board, small cupboard door that will fit in car). Secure dog on board with towels or cloth, making sure where you tie ends is not near injured area. 5. A technique to put a medium / large dog onto a board: Place board close to dog’s back while lying on the right side. Keeping the dog in a straight position – do not twist – grab loose skin / fur on the back and pull dog toward you and onto the board. Secure dog in place. 6. For a small dog: As though it was a board or splint, place your arm under the length of the dog’s body, supporting the head at your elbow, hand toward dog’s groin. Keeping dog up against your body and your arm straight and firm, gently lift dog onto board or maintain position to Vet. Do not twist dog’s body.

AVA

Star of ring and stage

– David Margan Let me introduce you to, Chakdarra Holly Go Lightly, otherwise known simply as, ‘Ava’. She’s a six-year-old Afghan Hound and star of the ring as an Australian Champion and an Australian Neuter Champion.

Ava is actually named after Audrey Hepburn, as Holly Golightly was her character name in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Now she’s also a star of the stage, a bit like her name sake, Ava Gardner, of whom Louis B. Mayer, head of MGM, said; “She can’t sing, she can’t act, she can’t talk, she’s terrific!”

Regardless Ava sure can walk, her movement is almost beyond imagining, a bit like the smoothness of Michael Johnson running or Darren Lockyer taking the ball downfield.

But this Ava is actually named after Audrey Hepburn, as Holly Golightly was her name in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

And there was no need for costumes as Ava has her own magnificent coat. A star of stage you say, what! Another canine action hero like Lassie or Rin Tin Tin? No, our Ava’s star quality was simply pure elegance. It all began last year when owner Jan Anderson received an email in her role as secretary of the National Afghan Hound Council (Australia). It was from the Little Red Company seeking some canine assistance in a show they were preparing about dogs and their relationship with humans called, “Let’s Be Friends Furever.” The idea came from Daniel Evans and Any Ingram from the creative agency, ‘The Good Room’, and was built on the principle of community sourced ideas, in this case inspired in part by the shared experience of a beloved pet’s passing. Ava did just one audition and the job was hers, as the producers had immediately fallen in love. The Chinese Crested Powder Puff had no chance. Okay it may have just been a walk on role, but Ava really did win the show and she knew it.

24

DOG WORLD March 2022

It involved two sold out weeks at the Powerhouse in Brisbane and four nights at the Hota Arts Centre on the Gold Coast. And also, a starring role at the opening night of the Brisbane Festival. The show was all about dogs with interactive Q&A’s with the audience, songs, and video. There was a Belgian Shepherd war dog with its Afghanistan veteran owner, a French Bulldog social media star, a Cocker Spaniel whose boy owner sang a song he’d written about his beloved pooch, puppies galore and a vet. Everyone had a great time. Two canine actors, Sir Rollo, a 85 kg Great Dane and a 4.5kg Boston Terrier called Mr Peanut became such good friends they even had their own dressing room. Apparently, Ava really enjoyed the limelight and having an audience as she glided on stage, climbed a podium and stood proud, grand in the adulation. All she had to do was look gorgeous and she did, while Jan spoke about the history of the breed, their characteristics and the art of Conformation Shows. There was only one hiccup. As we know if an Afghan doesn’t want to do something they don’t do it and almost no manner of persuasion will win them over. As Jan explained; “they’ll do something once and okay great, I’ll do it a second time but a third time, I really don’t want to do that! It can be the same in Conformation contests, by the third round she can lose interest”, But Ava performed on que for all the shows but one.

Once Ava got onto the podium that was it, she just lay down and refused to get up and strike the pose! “No way, I am over this!” And she even refused to leave the stage when she supposed to, she had gone into another place and ignored everyone until the magic potion was applied, food! For Jan Anderson, it marked the end of a great year despite the pandemic frustrations. “It was a great experience the crew at the Little Red Company were terrific and treated Ava like the princess she is, she is just a winner.”

Retirement Of All Breeds Judge

- Peter Cousins

Peter has recently advised of his retirement from judging and Dogs Queensland would like to acknowledge the contribution that Peter has made to the Queensland dog world and thank him very much for his effort over many years. Peter has provided Dogs Queensland with an overview of his life in the dog world. - Peter Cousins I became interested in pure bred dogs because of a black Cocker Spaniel I had as a young man. I was fascinated by the names on her pedigree, some described as imported, some as being registered with the KAQ, and some with the QKC. The Kennel Association of Queensland and the Queensland Kennel Council were of course instrumental in the formation of the Canine Control Council (Qld) in 1948, two years before my Cocker Spaniel was born. I read all the dog books I could and drove the breeder of my ‘Cocker’ mad with questions on Conformation and other things. I became interested in English Springer Spaniels after seeing Marj Morris’ Ch Scottann Samson (Imp UK) in 1967 when at the Royal to look at ‘Cockers’ and soon bought a puppy bitch from her. My first show was in 1968 and amongst the legends showing that day were Vic Jones with his ‘Cockers’ and Ray Underwood with his Boxers. I began stewarding in 1970, nearly every weekend. I was soon persuaded to join the Judges Training Scheme. I began judging group 6 Open Shows (first was a Doberman show) and group 3 Open Shows (first was a Golden Retriever show) and gradually progressed to championship All Breeds in 1980 as I recollect. The highlights for me were judging the Northern English Springer championship show in England in 1994, and (possibly strangely) an out of the blue appointment in 1988 (I was in England at the time

26

DOG WORLD March 2022

looking at dogs) to judge Best In Show at the South of England Open show, where I also judged the largest entries of Pembroke Corgis and Boxers that I have ever had. Apart from bench shows I also judged nonslip Retrieving Trials (I judged at the National Championship in 1987) and Field Trials for PointerRetrievers. My principal breed was English Springers (I still have one) followed by English Pointers. I also had a couple of Bedlingtons, a Labrador with my son David, and a Weimaraner that Gary and Bev Quinlan let me have for a time for Field Trial work. My wife Annette had Mini Poodles for years and so I was also closely associated with these. We have had Maremmas for nearly thirty years as livestock guardians (miniature horses, and also for some time newly born calves when we had cattle). I need to mention my five favourite dogs: •

Ch Drumhill Golden Guinea (bred by May and John Peters) won R/up to BIS at the Brisbane Royal, BIG at Sydney Royal, several BIS at the NSW specialty, and numerous BIS at

All Breeds Shows. • Ch Cruchfield the Vicar C.M. (bred by the late Mrs Sapio) may have won only one BIG, but although he did not reach dizzy heights, he performed creditably at non-slip Retrieving where he was awarded a certificate of merit (C.M.) on one occasion. He was an enthusiastic duck and rabbit dog. • Ch Bardenvale Bonnibelle (bred by Barbara and Dennis Cheetham) won a Novice Spaniel/ Retriever Trial on rabbits and a second in an open stake. She had a great nose for quail. • Ch Cleavehill Morning Post (Imp UK) (bred by Jean Taylor). He was a lovely dog. He won a number of BIGs and was R/Up at a NSW specialty. • Ch Haywyn Ragtime (English Pointer!) (bred by Bev Clare). I shot over him a lot on quail and he was breathtakingly stylish to watch when he got a scent and came on point. Tom Harris (Bordnamot Weimaraners) started me off on training him.

Instagram’s engagement rate remains steady at 8.3 per cent This was also hot! President Greenwood’s interview with ABC’s Kat Feeney certainly gained some traction with reaching around 3719 with 299 engagements and with many comments in relation to Norway’s recent decision to ban the selective breeding of British Bulldogs and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, out of concern for their breathing-related health issues. We’ve also hit 9025 FB followers! While our Instagram has just over 1200!

I was a CCC (Q) Councillor from 1980 to 1997. A HEAD START ON AN ACTIVE FUTURE

Fuel their growth and their play Eukanuba™ puppy diets contain concentrated energy and optimized fat and carbohydrate levels to help fuel growth and play. At weaning energy required for growth is at 50%, however when this growth plateaus energy required for growth drops down to 8-10%. Our goal with puppies is not to maximise their growth and weight gain but to ensure they grow at the right pace. Different size puppies have different metabolic growth rates, for example, a smaller breed puppy has a quicker metabolic growth rate and so this must be represented in their diets. As fat supplies more energy per gram than protein and carbohydrate, Eukanuba™ puppy diets have a high calorie density and are a great source of: • Essential fatty acids • A concentrated form of energy • Carrier for fat soluble vitamins

20% OFF ALL EUKANUBA™ PUPPY FOOD
