The typical Irish Wolfhound is a tall, powerful, doublecoated hound with a double suspension gallop at full pace that is certainly a magnificent sight to see. It was bred to chase, catch and bring down large animals, so the breed has to have strength, speed and great stamina.

Chairman's Report

Dear Members,

Now the New South Wales State Election is over, DOGS NSW will continue to be vocal in our advocacy of promoting responsible dog ownership and responsible breeding practices.

The election campaign launch targeted our members and the public with weekly posts regarding Bills and Policies, with advice on how to make your vote count.

This campaign focused on the “informed voter” ideology, using our platforms on social media including Facebook, Instagram, and the newly created LinkedIn,

The post-election strategy will consist of members contacting their local MP and to sign our petition on change.org.

I would like thank Professor Claire Wade, Professor Bill Ballard, Dr Harry Cooper, John Hutchinson, Sheridan Cook and many others for their input and support of DOGS NSW during the election. The information they provided to politicians and the general public, regarding the Animal Justice Party Companion Animals Amendment (Puppy Farm) Bill 2021, proved invaluable.

Good luck to those entering this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show!

Kind Regards

Editor's message

This edition sees the second part of Dr Karen Hedberg’s article on ‘Preparation for Whelping’ which is an extract from her much-read book, ‘The Dog Owner’s Manual’. Part two discusses ways to support and assist the bitch prior to whelping. This is a most informative and easy-to-read manual, even for novice dog owners going through this for the first time. The article commences on page 19.

We also have another article that discusses Arthritis in Dogs, what it is and what we (as owners) can do to help our beloved dogs. The article is written by animal physiotherapist Emma Duffy, from Whole Animal Health, and commences on page 23.

At times when upset or stressed, you may feel that your dog senses this and becomes even more attentive to you. You would be correct in assuming this, as new research findings from Queen’s University Belfast seem to confirm the fact that dogs can detect stress levels in humans by the odour that it emits in our breath and sweat. Please turn to page 26 to read more of the fascinating results from the research tests undertaken at the University in September 2022.

The Australia Day Show was once again a great success, thanks to the DOGS NSW Library & Archives Committee who hosted the event and coverage of the event can be found on page 11.

The spotlight feature for this month is the loveable Irish Wolfhound. Once fearless, big-game hunters capable of dispatching a wolf in single combat, Irish Wolfhounds today are the most serene and agreeable of companions and are sometimes referred to as ‘gentle giants’. The amiable Irish Wolfhound is an immense, muscular hound gracefully built along classic greyhound lines, capable of great speeds at a gallop. Early socialisation and puppy training classes are recommended and because of their intelligence, Irish Wolfhounds are fast learners. Irish Wolfhounds crave the company of their people and their sensitivity to humans makes them excellent candidates for therapy work. The spotlight breed feature commences on page 16.

Winners of February’s competition, to win one of six copies of ‘The Dog Owner’s Manual’ by Dr Karen Hedberg BVSc., were: Phil & Jeni Schwebel, Kayla Grannall, Taylor Warne, Erin Allison, Anne-Maree Meredith and Phil & Bec Spencer.

Congratulations to all!

Kerry

Increased quarantine time for imported pets

The Federal Government has announced that from 1 March 2023, dogs and cats imported from most countries will need to undertake 30 days of quarantine.

Currently, it stands at 10 days but, following a policy review, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry decided to increase the quarantine time to mitigate the chance of rabies in Australia.

Australia currently holds a rabies-free status, with the last recorded case appearing in 1867, and since the quarantine period was reduced from 30 days to 10 days in 2013, there has still not been a single case of rabies.

Dr Paul Hewitt, a member of Dogs QLD, said that while the quarantine period is 30 days, most animals are required to do 180 days in residence overseas before importation.

“It is more like 210 days, plus up to three months to get a spot in the overloaded quarantine facility, and then the actual 30 days quarantine. We could be talking 270 days between when a pet owner says goodbye to their beloved animal or show dog and they are reunited.”

Dr Hewitt has been breeding dogs for over 50 years and has been a respected Judge at local and international dog shows. Over the years, Dr Hewitt has imported six dogs and currently has two animals at a boarding facility in the USA, saying that cost is also another massive factor.

“The present cost of quarantine is $200 per day per animal, for ostensibly a glorified boarding kennel. So, for 30 days the cost will go up to $6,000 from $2,000 per animal.”

Dr Hewitt is paying $40 a day for each animal in the US boarding facility, which brings the total cost to $7,200 per animal for the required 180 days in residence.

“Thus, you could now be looking at some $13,000, not including air fares and consultancy fees. No change out of $20,000, which is out of the range of most owners, be they show dogs or loved pets.”

Then there is the psychological damage that can be done to a dog, says Dr Hewitt, with most animals experiencing Separation Syndrome and the associated behavioural difficulties. “Some dogs never recover. In quarantine, staff do the best they can, but animals are often released in psychotic distress, underweight and dirty because groomers are not allowed in, let alone owners.”

Dr Hewitt also says this is the first time, to his knowledge, that a quarantine review has been conducted behind closed doors. “Previous such reviews were conducted externally by independent specialists. To be sure, it has nothing to do with rabies.”

Qubit the Labrador named top detector dog of 2022 by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry

Qubit, the biosecurity detector dog, together with handler Sam, intercepted 126 products with the potential to carry foot and mouth disease (FMD) and seized 765 individual biosecurity items.

Dr Chris Locke, Acting Secretary of the Department and Acting Director of Biosecurity, said Qubit and Sam sniffed out and seized more FMD risk material – meat and dairy products – than any other biosecurity dog team last year.

“In 2022, we saw the threat of FMD and lumpy skin disease grow as it was detected in our near neighbour, Indonesia. “In response, the biosecurity detector dog program expanded the detector dog target odours to include dairy products, which have a greater risk of carrying exotic diseases including FMD.”

Currently, the department has 46 Labradors working as biosecurity detector dogs across Australia’s international airports, mail centres and seaports, with this number set to increase to 62 over the next two years.

“Biosecurity detector dogs are a vital part of our biosecurity defence at the border. They are teamed with our detector dog handlers, who are biosecurity officers with specialised skills to effectively train and deploy a detector dog.“Together, they do a great job of protecting Australia alongside the other measures we deploy to mitigate risk from exotic pests and diseases.”

Other special mentions went to Vespa, named ‘Most Versatile’, who found the widest range of commodities – 124 different commodities across her 635 individual risk items seized. Emma was named ‘Rookie of the Year’ for sniffing out 278 individual risk items since her graduation in August 2022, equating to nearly three seizures per workday.

Australia Day Show 2023

WORDS: Nancy Keck PHOTOGRAPHY: Cabal Canine Candids / Ffire Photography

Our show went very well this year, having good entries and kind weather, with an 8.00am start in the cool morning air and temperatures not exceeding 35° until the finish of the show.

Our lovely judging panel had many beautiful dogs shown to them, with Mrs Sylvia Brackman (NSW) judging Non Sporting and General Specials. Mrs Alanna Burton (NSW) had her first group appointment judging Toys, with Mr Wayne Burton (NSW) - Terriers, Mrs Sandra McMahon (NSW) - Gundogs, Mrs Louanne Donald (NSW) - Hounds, Ms Rosemary Duffy (NSW) - Working Dogs and Mr Les Bradney (NSW) - Utility. Chief Steward Mr Stephen Oliver did a great job keeping things running smoothly and on time.

The Show Manager print kiosk worked extremely well under the guidance of Jordan Long. The new signage for our Research and Education building plus the marking out of the new path saw many people visit and sales of excess books were excellent.

Not to be forgotten, the winner of best-dressed Gazebo and best dressed dog was Grace Woodward and best-dressed exhibitor Sue Ford. Congratulations to Best in Show Winner Saluki SUP. CH. Itsozi

CARRIED

DOGS NSW was represented in March 2022 by myself and Ms Deidre Crofts. Deidre put in the most detailed and professional answers to the queries of the members of the Standing Committee. The outcome of our representation felt positive and the liaison and communication with the DPI on current issues seems positive.

Secondly, DOGS NSW was requested to attend as stakeholders at The Select Committee and give evidence again in NSW Parliament on the private members Bill Animal Justice Party Companion Animal Amendment (Puppy Farming Bill 2021). I feel that DOGS NSW presented well and I am positive that we have a respect for the name DOGS NSW at this level. There are many Committees who contribute to so many areas of DOGS NSW and I will just name a few who have had particular difficulties over 2022.

The Grounds Committee

I would like to thank the Chair and Grounds Committee who have dealt with so many hazards and maintenance to keep the grounds in such great condition given the circumstances.

Conformation Judges Training Committee & CJEP Examinations Committee

With the complications of COVID and flooding, our Trainees were finally able to commence the 2022/2023 Conformation Judges Training Program. I wish all candidates all the best for the rest of the Program. I would like to thank the Chairs of the Committees, ie, Conformation Judges Training and CJEP Examinations, plus all the Co-ordinators and their Assistants for the ongoing work in trying conditions.

Finance Committee

Welcoming our new Chair, Mr Ross Sinclair, who I know is doing a wonderful job along with the rest of his Committee.

The Office

I would like to thank the staff in very trying conditions with COVID and flooding, the logistics managed by Anthony Khamis in running on short staff and managing to adopt ways of cutting costs and running efficiently has been a huge effort. To Virginia Gagan-Wilson for her undeniable patience and consistency in answering hours and hours of questions from both Directors and members has been above and beyond. To all the office staff, a thank you for working through such hard times.

The Board

Finally, I would like to acknowledge all the members of the Board who give their time voluntarily in many committees and decision-making in the interest of the members of DOGS NSW.

MOVED V Etherington OAM

SECONDED G Vernon

THAT the report of the Chairman, as published in the 2021/2022 RNSWCC Ltd Annual Report, be received.

questions the members may wish to ask regarding the 2021/2022 Audit.

Director Rafton explained that an official notification to members had requested lists of questions to be forwarded to the Office, prior to the night of the Annual General Meeting, to enable detailed information in regard to the financials to be able to be given on the night.

To this end Ms Anne Williams 2100075519 had requested the following:-

1. What is included in the audit and consulting fees - you have provided the auditor fees in the notes of $10,000 - what was the other $19,000 spent on?

bill.

2. What were the additional Board of Directors costs? This increased by over $12,000.

In the last twelve months significantly more face to face meetings have been held involving increased travel costs which have been higher than during COVID times.

3. Why has rent tripled, the grounds are not fully usable due to flooding, perimeter fencing was not completed so some of the sports could not go ahead? This is from a competitor’s perspective.

The large difference in rental payments for financial year 2022 to the previous year is due to the renewal of the lease by the Government, with only 16 years left for our occupation of these grounds. During this process it was discovered that previous ‘reviews’ of our rental amounts had not been done in regard to the annual fees charged as we had no increase for many years. This was, naturally, adjusted prior to the lease being renewed but the additional adjustment charged was negotiated for only a period of 20 from June 2020 to June 2022 and that amount resulted in an additional $2,708.33 per month resulting in the $67,971.25 included in the current 2022 figures.

The reason for the increase in ‘Wages’ is mostly due to the transfer from Part Time hours to Full Time hours re COVID. Correspondingly, the Superannuation increases accordingly. The wonderful thing about

Australian author Josephine Moon recently shared her Autism identity with the world and now brings readers her most heart-warming tale yet, featuring an all Autistic cast.

Phoenix Rose, a 35-year-old neurodivergent teacher, receives an urgent plea from an online friend in Tasmania who is desperate for help to rehome her beloved animals. Caught at a crossroads in her career and her relationship with partner Zack, Phoenix agrees to embark on a spontaneous road trip to relocate the menagerie from Tasmania to Brisbane.

About the author

Josephine is a huge animal lover and lives with her own menagerie of companions, who have been a source of inspiration for the book. Her books include The Tea Chest, The Chocolate Promise, The Beekeeper’s Secret, Three Gold Coins, The Gift of Life, The Cake Maker’s Wish and The Jam Queens. She now lives on acreage in the beautiful Noosa hinterland with her husband and son and a tribe of animals that seems to increase in size each year.

Irish Wolfhound

History

The Irish Wolfhound has a history that stretches back to the times of the Celts and perhaps beyond. It is thought that the Celts brought the tall greyhound-like hunting dog to Ireland, with its original purpose being to hunt and kill wolves, which it did with such success as to cause the extinction of the wolf in the British Isles.

Temperament

The Irish Wolfhound can be wilful and destructive as a puppy not given sufficient attention to occupy its curious mind. It friendly and an independent thinker, as it was bred to make its own decisions while hunting. Obedience training is mandatory, given the size the breed grows quick to learn and does not respond well to overly long training sessions. Consistent, short a period of weeks and regular application of the rules, will see the best possible relationship develop with the hound.

Appearance

The typical Irish Wolfhound is a tall, powerful, double-coated hound with a double suspension gallop at full pace that is certainly a magnificent sight to see. It was bred to chase, catch and bring down large animals, so the breed has to have the strength, speed and stamina to catch and kill a wolf. While it should not be quite so heavy or massive as the Great Dane, it generally resembles the Deerhound. The Irish Wolfhound is of great size and maintains a commanding appearance: muscular, strong and gracefully built.

Health

If the Irish Wolfhound should suffer from health problems before its time, it will most often be to bone cancers, heart problems or bloat. Other breed-related health problems are port-systemic shunt, which is testable and OCD (shoulder or elbow joint problems). The breedguardian breeders have made concerted efforts to reduce the occurrence of these health problems, especially where there seems to be an identifiable genetic basis or at least a trend. The Irish Wolfhound’s lifespan, like most giant breeds, is six to eight years on average. However, ages over 10 years are not unheard of, given good management and a healthy dose of luck.

Maintenance

The Irish Wolfhound is a low-maintenance dog once it has reached maturity, at around two to three years of age. As an adult, it tends to spend 90 per cent of its day finding a nice cosy spot to snooze, especially if it can keep an eye on you at the same time. A weekly brush and monthly wash is a good guide to follow. It does shed hair, especially coming into spring when it sheds the thickest part of its winter coat.

Suitability

A fully fenced yard is a must. The breed generally doesn’t make a good guard or security dog, although its size will deter most people and sometimes it can be protective of the house and family. The Irish Wolfhound makes a good family pet and enjoys a daily walk.

Preparation for Whelping

Extracts from THE DOG OWNER’S MANUAL

No matter how many books are read on the subject, few owners actually believe that their bitch will cope very well with little or no assistance during whelping. Others can go to the opposite extreme of ignoring the bitch entirely and leaving her to whelp on her own. With some novice owners, this may be quite understandable but owners’ and bitches’ temperaments can vary widely. However, I believe that the person who decided to mate the bitch and particularly the careless person who allowed the bitch to ‘get out,’ has a responsibility at least to be present and give moral support to the bitch.

LAST WEEK (or minute check-up) - Particularly for novice owners and Maiden Bitches

A check-up in the last 5-6 days of pregnancy is most useful to all parties concerned. The vet is notified that the litter is nearly due, the health of the bitch is checked and the owners are hopefully reassured that all is going well.

Bitches can be x-rayed in the last week if you want to know the size and number of puppies, and/or have an ultrasound (see pictured right) to check on heart rates and ensure the puppies are alive and well. With bitches with a history of whelping problems, it can be advisable to know ahead of time whether the possibility of a caesarean is on the cards. If the bitch is a maiden bitch and/or of a breed that frequently needs caesareans, an internal examination of the pelvis is recommended.

Planned Caesareans

Large-headed breeds, e.g. Pekingese, Dandie Dinmont Terriers, Bulldogs (of all kinds), Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Chihuahuas, must be watched closely during whelping, as they are all breeds that have puppies with large head sizes, but bitches that often have small pelvic diameters.

I would strongly recommend that in breeds that frequently have caesareans, the bitch has an internal pelvic examination about a week before she is due. This can, of course, be done at any time (even prior to mating), but definitely before they are due to whelp.

The normal pelvic shape internally is a slightly broad ‘U’ shape. Bitches who are extremely likely to require a caesarean have a very narrow ‘V’-shaped pelvis internally. Structurally, these bitches will find it almost impossible to pass large headed or large-shouldered puppies.

With bitches that are narrow in the pelvis, a planned caesarean should be arranged ahead of time, by having exact dates. With progesterone blood tests and timing of the mating, your veterinarian can determine very accurately the time of conception and hence the optimal time for a caesarean (63 days from ovulation is the average).

Bitches that have had a history of previous caesareans should similarly have very accurate dates for precisely the same reasons. Also, bitches that have had car accidents in the past that fractured the pelvis ring are usually automatic caesarean candidates.

DOGS NSW ۔ April 2023 19 FEATURE

Support of the bitch

Maiden bitches are often extremely dependent and will not let you out of their sight in the last day or two before whelping. If you go out or are asleep, they may wait with crossed legs until you appear, so they can deposit a puppy at your feet (with a great sigh of relief). Not all bitches are like this and the more independent bitches may insist on hiding under the house, shed or bed, strenuously resisting any attempts to bring them out into the open, where they imagine everyone will try to steal their puppies. Try to treat the bitch as normally as possible so she feels all is stable in her world.

To avoid all the variations, make sure the bitch has been well exposed to the proposed whelping area by sleeping or kennelling her in that area for at least a week prior to the due date.

If the bitch is desperate for your presence, sit in the box (large breeds, obviously), or beside the box, and gently give her little tummy rubs, but not too much or she will prefer this to actually whelping. If the bitch is coping very well, (the ‘no fuss and bother’ type), leave her more or less alone and sit in a chair on the other side of the room, getting up only to check if a puppy is still in the sack, or is particularly sluggish. Keep strangers out – viewing audiences are not required, nor desired by the bitch. Whelping is, after all, a very private affair.

Your presence and support during the whelping, while not necessarily interfering, can greatly reduce the stress of the bitch. The number of puppies that survive can be increased by judicious assistance, preferably with an experienced person based on sound knowledge of what is occurring, how to cope with it and how to avoid panicking.

The bitch preparing for whelping

The bitch will usually whelp at 60-61 days (smaller breeds 62-63 days) after mating. Three to four days prior to whelping, the bulk of the puppies ‘drop’ down from the ribcage and then gradually shifts back. In the last 48 hours, the bulk is halfway between the end of the ribs and the front of the pelvis. See diagram to the right.

The bitch is near to whelping when you can feel a puppy close to the pelvis (within 5cm of the front of the pelvis). She will start to lose a clear or creamy, thick mucous discharge about 24-48 hours before whelping. This is the cervical plug and should not be discoloured (i.e., green).

The milk starts to come from the back teats about 5-6 days prior to whelping and gradually, more easily from the teats further forwards. When you gently squeeze the front teats and the milk comes out very easily, whelping is usually 12-24 hours away.

20 www.dogsnsw.org.au FEATURE

The bitch is often very loose in her motions in the last 24 hours due to hormonal changes taking place at this time.

It is normal for the temperature of the bitch to drop in the last 24 hours prior to whelping, from a normal 38.0° – 38.5° to around 37° C. This drop can be of quite a short duration and may be missed. Temperature taking can be a reasonably sound indication of approaching parturition but should be taken in context with the other symptoms mentioned previously.

Progesterone levels can be checked if the dates of mating are unknown or if the bitch was mated over a wide space of time with no progesterone testing done at the time. Progesterone levels drop sharply prior to whelping. If under 2ng (6nmol), whelping will usually commence within 12-14 hours.

Food

The bitch usually goes off her food the night prior to whelping, but not all bitches will do this and some will eat at any stage. Pregnant bitches, particularly if they are carrying a large litter, run out of blood sugar very quickly and can run the risk of pregnancy toxaemia. If they are not eating, Nutrigel® and honey are highly concentrated food supplements that are very good for keeping the bitch’s blood sugar and energy levels up.

If the bitch is off her food for more than 24 hours, is depressed or has a discoloured discharge at any time during pregnancy, particularly in the last week, take the bitch to your vet.

If there is anything seriously wrong, the sooner the bitch has veterinary attention the better. If the owner is worried, I would rather see a bitch than wait several days and end up with an emergency that might cost the lives of the puppies and seriously affect the health of the bitch. Though, I must say, preferably not in the middle of the night, unless the bitch is actually in labour.

Above: “The milk starts to come from the back teats about 5-6 days”

If your bitch regularly has trouble either holding a pregnancy or has heavy, discoloured discharges, care must be taken to prevent this in subsequent pregnancies.

Assisting the bitch

Use of Calcium while whelping.

Calcium is essential for muscle contraction. The process of whelping is an extremely muscular activity and the lack of calcium availability can slow down or halt the progress of the whelping. By giving calcium during whelping, preferably a rapidly and well-absorbed form of calcium, the whelping is much faster and usually more trouble-free. Calcium given during whelping is particularly valuable in the prevention of uterine inertia.

I find the best product to use is the chelated calcium tablets, e.g., Value Plus Organic Calcium® tablets, as they are rapidly absorbed. For medium-sized breeds, I suggest one tablet per hour, and one tablet per half hour when tired. For smaller breeds, give a quarter tablet and for large breeds two tablets.

Calcium syrups (e.g., Calcium Sandoz®) can be used during whelping as the sugar in the calcium syrup will assist in keeping the bitch’s muscle tone and energy levels up. However, repeated high doses of the syrup can result in vomiting and very liquid diarrhoea, due to excessive sugar intake.

Calcium is particularly important in those breeds or individuals that are highly strung or prone to milk fever. Some individuals become very stressed during whelping and can become aggressive towards their puppies (most commonly seen in Bull Terriers). High doses of calcium during and after whelping will reduce the incidence and severity of this problem.

The average bitch will need little or no assistance during whelping but, in my opinion, someone should always be present to give the bitch moral support. Medium-sized breeds generally whelp very easily and assistance is needed only if the bag fails to break, or when you may need to shake the fluids out of the lungs of a tired puppy at the tail-end of whelping. Giant breeds are often very slow whelpers as they have a tendency to be slothful, especially in late pregnancy.

Good exercise all the way through pregnancy can be very beneficial. Giant breeds may occasionally require a caesarean if they become too exhausted to push out the last few puppies when there is a large litter of 10-14 puppies. Small breeds and those possessing large heads, e.g., Bulldogs, Pekingese and Chihuahuas, can have difficulties due to small pelvis size (internal). Overweight bitches, especially when they are carrying a large load, can also be very slow whelpers.

Older bitches are slower to whelp, have poorer muscle tone (happens to us all!) and are more likely to lose puppies during whelping. You should be aware of this and if the bitch is slowing down to the point that the puppies are extremely stressed and/or hard to revive, you may need to consider a caesarean midway through the whelping.

Arthritis in Dogs

W hat is it and what can we do about it?

Arthritis is the term most people use when talking about osteoarthritis (OA), the most common joint disorder in the world affecting humans and animals. The word comes from “osteo” meaning bone, “arth” meaning joint, and “itis” meaning inflammation. Data from various sources suggest it affects 80% of dogs over the age of 8 years old. It is the most common cause of chronic pain in dogs and, in a study of over 12,000 German Shepherd Dogs in the UK, arthritis or musculoskeletal disease was the most common cause of euthanasia or natural death, surpassing even cancer.

Arthritis used to be thought of as natural and inevitable “wear and tear” in old age, wearing down the cartilage until none is left, leaving bone rubbing on bone. We now know it is complex, involving all the structures of the joint and that younger dogs can have it too. In fact, the joints of young dogs can begin to have problems very early on if they have conditions like hip dysplasia, patella luxation or injuries like cruciate ligament rupture in the knee (stifle). Arthritis can develop in the knee only three weeks after a cruciate ligament rupture.

What are “joints”?

Joints are essentially the joining of two (or more) separate bones, to allow body parts to move. The surfaces that meet are covered with a smooth cushion called cartilage which allows low-friction movement. The entire joint is enclosed in a water-tight capsule with a special lining (synovium) that produces fluid to lubricate and feed the cartilage. The bones are held together by guy-ropes called ligaments, only allowing movement in certain directions. Each part of the joint, i.e., the bone, cartilage, lining, fluid, capsule and ligaments, has an important role that depends on the other parts to do its job properly. Movement and weight through the joint stimulate the nerves to fire and switch on surrounding muscles, helping to renew fluid, keeping the circulation going and cartilage healthy.

How does arthritis affect the joints?

In arthritis, the cartilage is damaged, sometimes on a very small scale, but, over time, the smooth surface becomes rough, the lining becomes inflamed and the fluid becomes too thin and doesn’t do its job of lubricating or giving nutrients to the cartilage. As a result, the cartilage thins and tiny new areas of bone grow around the edge of the joint. The cartilage loses its ability to cushion, there’s friction inside the joint and the cartilage is eventually destroyed.

Studies show that a dog who is carrying extra weight will likely develop arthritis much sooner than a dog who is a healthy body weight. Losing just 1.1kg for every 10kg of bodyweight has been proven to significantly reduce lameness. The extra weight on damaged cartilage speeds up the process and makes it even more painful.

DOGS NSW ۔ April 2023 23 FEATURE

Symptoms of arthritis

It’s easy to miss one or two of these symptoms when they first start, so it’s best to look for changes to your dog’s normal behaviour, appetite or routines:

• Pain – usually a dull ache, made worse after the joint has been used for a while, for example at the end of the day or after a walk. Look for the dog nudging a particular body part, licking or nibbling at an area, or avoiding things they normally like to do like jumping on/off the bed or in and out of the car.

• Stiffness – usually worse first thing in the morning, causing difficulties getting up off the floor, limping, walking slowly, trouble bending the neck to reach a food bowl or trouble crouching to go to the toilet. These can also be, and often are signs of pain.

• Swelling – but not always present. The degree varies but usually, the more swelling, the more severe the arthritis is. A swollen joint is a painful joint.

• Weakness – pain, inflammation and swelling irritate the nerves and switch off the muscles that are there to support and move the joint. This puts even more weight through the joint, which becomes a vicious circle of more pain causing more weakness, causing less movement, causing more weakness, causing more pain! The heavier the dog, the more weight is placed on weakening muscles.

What can I do to prevent arthritis?

We don’t have a cure for it or a magic pill that stops it from happening. Some dogs develop it despite being healthy and active and some dogs don’t. There are a few theories being developed but a cause has not been proven. We do know that certain injuries or conditions mentioned earlier make it more likely to happen. We also know that older dogs are likely to have it, but it may not actually be causing them pain (the same goes for humans).

The latest research says body weight is the biggest factor in how severe arthritis becomes.

• Keep your dog at a healthy body weight. Studies show that a lot of owners don’t know if their dog is a healthy ideal weight or not, so if you’re unsure, ask the Vet or Vet Nurse to weigh your dog and give them a Body Condition Score (BCS). A recent study found that dogs with a BCS of 4 or 5 were less likely to have arthritis than those with a BCS of 6 or higher.

• Do some sort of physical activity each day with your dog. Even a sniff walk on grass is really beneficial. Wading in water really helps, especially in the underwater treadmill we have in our Clinic.

24 www.dogsnsw.org.au
FEATURE

What can I do to prevent it?

• A qualified animal physiotherapist can show you strength and conditioning exercises to do – it’s never too late to start. 2-3 short exercises every day or two can make a huge positive difference in keeping a dog’s joints healthy and prolonging their life.

• Ask your Vet regarding whether they recommend a particular diet, drug or supplement, as they will be aware of what really works versus the hype on forums, Facebook, etc. Very few supplements are scientifically proven to have an effect so beware before you spend a lot of money on them.

My dog already has arthritis – what can I do?

• Unless they’re limping or refusing the walk, encourage them to walk even if they can’t manage very far. Two six minute walks a day are better than one long walk every couple of days. Go at their pace, even if it’s very slow. Respect when they refuse to walk further or they sit down – it’s their way of saying “enough”! This is a sure sign of pain so it’s time for a Vet check-up.

• Walk your dog on grass. The softer surface has less impact on their joints, and there are more smells which stimulates their brain and gives them enjoyment, even if it’s a short walk.

• Visit a qualified animal physiotherapist who will check out all their joints, muscles, nerves, movement and whether they have pain or swelling. They will also:

o Give you advice on how you can help your dog and improve their quality of life,

o Show you easy tasks or exercises to do that will strengthen your dog,

o Help with any pain or swelling (working with your Vet too),

o Perform treatments such as laser, massage, acupuncture, manipulation and taping to make your dog feel better and move more easily,

o Work with you on a management plan to get your dog more active, which will help manage the arthritis longer term and assist with a healthy weight,

o If your dog likes water, they may recommend hydrotherapy or an underwater treadmill. Water lifts some of the weight off their joints, allowing them more freedom of movement. The water pressure helps gently massage the joints and stimulates the circulation. In next month’s article I’ll talk about hydrotherapy.

• Always consult the Vet regularly to examine your dog and discuss any medications to treat the arthritis and give pain relief. Because we know that most dogs just want to please us and their natural tendency is to not show weakness to the pack leader, we sometimes miss subtle signs of pain. If a dog is limping, they’re in pain and they need to see a vet.

Stress has an odour and dogs can smell it!

Source: Queen’s University Belfast

The physiological processes associated with an acute psychological stress response produce changes in human breath and sweat that dogs can detect with an accuracy of 93.75%, according to a new study.

The study involved four dogs from Belfast: Treo, Fingal, Soot and Winnie plus 36 people.

Researchers collected samples of sweat and breath from participants before and after they did a difficult maths problem. They self-reported their stress levels before and after the task and researchers only used samples where the person’s blood pressure and heart rate had increased.

The dogs were taught how to search a scent line-up and alert researchers to the correct sample. The stressed and relaxed samples were then introduced but at this stage, the researchers didn’t know if there was an odour difference that dogs could detect.

In every test session, each dog was given one person’s relaxed and stressed samples, taken only four minutes apart. All of the dogs were able to correctly alert the researchers to each person’s stressed sample.

Clara Wilson, a PhD student in the School of Psychology at Queen’s, explains: “The findings show that we, as humans, produce different smells through our sweat and breath when we are stressed and dogs can tell this apart from our smell when relaxed, even if it is someone they do not know.

“The research highlights that dogs do not need visual or audio cues to pick up on human stress. This is the first study of its kind and it provides evidence that dogs can smell stress from breath and sweat alone, which could be useful when training service dogs and therapy dogs.

“It also helps to shed more light on the human-dog relationship and adds to our understanding of how dogs may interpret and interact with human psychological states.”

One of the super sniffer canines that took part in the study was Treo, a two-year-old Cocker Spaniel. His owner Helen Parks says: “As the owner of a dog that thrives on sniffing, we were delighted and curious to see Treo take part in the study. We couldn’t wait to hear the results each week when we collected him. He was always so excited to see the researchers at Queen’s and could find his own way to the laboratory.

“The study made us more aware of a dog’s ability to use their nose to “see” the world. We believe this study really developed Treo’s ability to sense a change in emotion at home. The study reinforced for us that dogs are highly sensitive and intuitive animals and there is immense value in using what they do best... sniffing!”

Odours emitted by the body constitute chemical signals that have evolved for communication, primarily within species. Given dogs’ remarkable sense of smell, their close domestication history with humans, and their use to support human psychological conditions such as anxiety, panic attacks and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), researchers

26 www.dogsnsw.org.au
FEATURE

wondered whether dogs could be sensing chemical signals to respond to their owners’ psychological states.

In the new study, the researchers collected samples of breath and sweat from non-smokers who had not recently eaten or drunk. Samples were collected both before and after a fast-paced arithmetic task, along with self-reported stress levels and objective physiological measures: heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP). Samples from 36 participants who reported an increase in stress because of the task, and experienced an increase in HR and BP during the task, were shown to trained dogs within three hours of being collected.

Four dogs of different breeds and breed mixes had been trained, using a clicker as well as kibble, to match odours in a discrimination task. At testing, dogs were asked to find the participant’s stressed sample (taken at the end of the task) while the same person’s relaxed sample (taken only minutes before, prior to the task starting) was also in the sample line-up.

Overall, dogs could detect and perform their alert behaviour on the sample taken during stress in 675 out of 720 trials, or 93.75% of the time, much greater than expected by chance (p<0.001). The first time they were exposed to a participant’s stressed and relaxed samples, the dogs correctly alerted to the stressed sample 94.44% of the time. Individual dogs ranged in performance from 90% to 96.88% accuracy.

The authors conclude that dogs can detect an odour associated with the change in Volatile Organic Compounds produced by humans in response to stress, a finding that tells us more about the human-dog relationship and could have applications to the training of anxiety and PTSD service dogs that are currently trained to respond predominantly to visual cues.

The authors add: “This study demonstrates that dogs can discriminate between the breath and sweat taken from humans before and after a stress-inducing task. This finding tells us that an acute, negative, psychological stress response alters the odour profile of our breath/sweat and that dogs are able to detect this change in odour.”

The research findings have been published in PLOS ONE. The study was carried out by Clara Wilson (PhD researcher) and Kerry Campbell (MSc student) in the School of Psychology. They were supervised by Catherine Reeve, with support on collecting the human physiological measures from Zachary Petzel.
