Dear Members,
Chairman's REPORT
Congratulations to all who had success at the Advance™ Sydney Royal Dog Show last month.
Many Veterinarians have noticed an increased worm burden in all animals during this hot and humid time, a reminder that maintaining a regular worming / flea/ tick programme is imperative for our dogs.
The office has been productive in both efficiency of paperwork being processed and also the significant savings in postage by initiating more cost efficient ways of mailing, which has produced significant savings annually.
The remediation of the German Shepherd Dog League rings is now complete in readiness for the upcoming Agility Nationals. The addition of the top dressing has eliminated the uneven surface and has reduced risks to those using the rings.
The Herding activity season has now recommenced and many of these performance activities are widely acknowledged by the general public.
Nationally, membership numbers are down, and in NSW our puppy registrations are down 35%. DOGS NSW Annual Membership Renewals will be sent out from 1st April 2024.
Nationally all Canine bodies rely on income from areas such as registrations and it is timely to remember that all puppies sold must be transferred to their new owners thus giving DOGS NSW the necessary transfer fees and additionally, possible new members.
Members are also welcome to attend show training classes each Wednesday at 11.30am, which is great value for the small fee of a gold coin.
Kind Regards

Editor's MESSAGE
Dear Members,
The ‘Take Me to the Beach’ shows feature in this edition, with the Wollongong & District Kennel Club Inc. having its three AM shows as well as hosting the Illawarra South East Region’s three PM shows from Friday 2 to Sunday 4 February 2024. The six shows over the three days were certainly popular and the beach-themed activities were as festive and colourful as always.
The coverage of this huge event is featured on page 8 and includes an image of Jean Dally, who was honoured for her 75-year DOGS NSW Membership as well as the presentation of Best in Show by Russell Britten’s granddaughter, Courtney, in memory of this great and much loved DOGS NSW member and past Director.
We also have a number of interesting feature articles this month which include an article on dog supplements, ‘The Seaweed that Cleans Teeth’, ‘Pets and Better Sleep’, ‘Key factors to maintain a Healthy and Shiny Dog Coat’, ‘Essential Tips for Effective Dog Brushing’ and ‘What is Canine Cough?’
The spotlight feature this month is the Coton de Tulear, a bright, sweet-natured breed with a happy temperament, very sociable with humans and with other dogs. It adapts perfectly to all ways of life and is easily trained due to its eagerness to please. The temperament of the Coton de Tuléar is one of the main characteristics of the breed, as it is playful, charming, affectionate and intelligent. Although generally quiet, it can become very vocal - grunting, barking and making other noises - when having fun, which is one of the endearing quirks of the breed.
The winner of February’s competition, to win a ‘Fursafe Pet First Aid Kit & Guide’ was Nikki Mallam. Congratulations Nikki! Kerry

Innovative Animal Health
Wollongong & District Kennel Club Inc. Illawarra & South East Region
Friday to Sunday, 2-4 February 2024
The Wollongong & District Kennel Club ‘Take Me To The Beach’ shows, also hosted the Illawarra & South East Region of DOGS NSW shows making it a great summer cluster. Taking place next to the beach and walking tracks (the shows are a mere 30 metres from the surf and sand), this weekend is looked forward to by interstate and local exhibitors alike and is located at the Shamrocks Rugby Union ground, Woonona.
Our theme of beachwear for exhibitors, Judges and Officials, saw boardshorts, loud floral shirts, hats and sunnies being the approved attire! The competition for best dressed was hot and it was great to see all the exhibitors, stewards and Judges get into the theme. The result - a relaxed, fun weekend with lots of laughs and exhibitors enjoying the beach with their favourite pooches. We had fantastic weather and the dogs loved their beach swims.
The entry of over 500 on Saturday proved that exhibitors love the regional venues. Our panel of Judges were well received and commented on the great atmosphere in and around the judging rings. Our Stewards made sure that the rings ran smoothly, ably led by Lyn Cook. Bill McLean was, as usual, our raffle king and the Club will be donating over $1,300 to the Breast Cancer Research Trials, our 2024 Club Charity.
Saturday was the Russell Britten Memorial Show attended by Russell’s granddaughter Courtney (pictured below on the right), who presented our Best in Show in memory of this great canine citizen.
We also acknowledged our Vice President Jean Hayes (Flood) who has been an active member of DOGS NSW for 75 years, which is probably unprecedented. Please see a photo of Jean below (right) taken at the event.
Saturday also saw 24 new exhibitors enter the ‘New Exhibitor Sweepstakes’. Nikki Lane and Jim Black were our sweepstakes Mentor Judges and ensured every exhibitor was given valuable tips and tricks to bring out the best in their dogs. A special thank you to Nikki and Jim. The class was sponsored with prize money by Jayveeque Italian Greyhounds. First place was awarded with a lovely rosette also donated by Jayveeque. Thank you to Jackie Hardwicke for the generous sponsorship.
Sunday was best-dressed dog and owner and as expected, the competition was strong. The winners were decided by the Shamrocks Committee members with 1st place being awarded to the Hawaiian princess Hannah McKay with her surfing Frenchie, Quincy.
The licenced bar was again a feature with alfresco seating, the Shamrocks Club members cooked their usual mean barbeque and threw in some friendly banter for free. With a walking and bike track next to the ground, the shows are always a drawcard for the general public.
The Club would like to thank all the exhibitors who answered questions and chatted with the families who came to the show looking at the different breeds for their next family pet. Additionally, there were a number of new exhibitors who were keen to get to more shows due to the positive experience they received from other exhibitors. Well done!
Our major sponsor, Purina Proplan with the nutrition team led by Mel Burton, was a great addition to the weekend. Thank you for the excellent products donated as prizes and the invaluable advice given to exhibitors and the public about their dogs’ nutrition at the Proplan tent. Thanks must also go to our vendor, Show Aquipment and to the Shamrocks Rugby Union Club. Without their support and the great venue, the Wollongong & District Kennel Club ‘Take Me To The Beach’ Shows would not be the success that they are.

What is Canine Cough?
Canine cough, otherwise known as kennel cough, is a contagious disease that affects a dog’s respiratory system. Canine cough is specific to dogs and is highly contagious and spreads through dog socialising, at such places as dog shows, kennels and even obedience school classes.
Canine cough can continue for several weeks and has the potential to develop into other life-threatening problems if not treated. This condition can also be the result of exposure to dust or cigarette smoke, no matter how well the area is ventilated.
Main causes of canine cough
Canine coughs are just like many viruses, having different strands that can affect each dog differently. The two main causes of canine cough are the parainfluenza virus and Bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria.
Dogs contract canine cough when they inhale bacteria or virus particles into their respiratory tract.
What are the symptoms of canine cough
• Fever or unenergetic
• Dry persistent cough
• Nasal or eye discharge
• Snorting
• Sneezing
• Gaging and vomiting
The repetitive hacking cough or dry cough will develop three to ten days after exposure. The cough can sound like a forceful cough and often sounds like a goose honk.
Canine cough is contagious. It is important that you keep them away from other animals if you think your dog might have this condition. The cough can often be set off by things like barking, pulling on the lead, or getting excited. Canine cough can be more common in some dogs and specific breeds.
How to prevent canine cough
One of the best ways to prevent kennel cough is to limit face-to-face contact with other dogs. If you are attending dog shows precautions such as disinfectant should be taken.
Disinfect kennels, bedding and bowls after shows. During shows, it is important for handlers to wash their hands in between having contact with one dog to another.
How to treat canine cough
The most important prevention method is to have your dog vaccinated against the disease. Vaccination will not prevent the disease entirely, but it will significantly reduce the symptoms and the duration.
We vaccinate against the two most common causes of canine cough; however, this does not mean that your dog will not catch the cough. Vaccinations will help reduce the risk of getting canine cough, and often reduce the symptoms, if your dog ever contracts it.
The severity of the infection will impact how we treat it; minor symptoms do not require any medications or treatments and they will pass on their own. It is important if you know, or think your dog has a canine cough, that you do not expose other dogs to the infection.
If your dog has more severe symptoms, a vet will prescribe medication to help with the inflammation. Dogs with pneumonia will usually require intensive care and will need to stay overnight under close observation with an IV drip. Once your dog has recovered, we recommend a yearly canine cough booster. Although your dog will have antibodies to protect him or her from the virus, a vet will find out which strand of the virus your dog had. Immunity to a certain strand appears not to be long-lasting, so a yearly booster will help your dog stay safer.

4. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
Our Articles call upon the Board of Directors to report on the activities of the Company during the preceding Financial Year and, on behalf of the Board, I have the pleasure of submiting the 2022/2023 Report for your consideration.
Board of Directors
Congratulations to our re- elected Directors, Lyn Brand and Guy Spagnolo and welcome to new Directors, Sue McFadden and Stephen Oliver. I, also, was returned after a 12 month hiatus and, in that regard, I thank you for your support.
Thank you to the Directors who retired in November 2022: Vicki Etherington OAM, Peter Cutler and Ted Pickering, for your many dedicated years of service to the Company and its members.
Future Challenges
Of much concern is the dwindling entries at Dog Shows. The issue is a complex one. Much more complex than just DOGS NSW and Dogs Australia promoting pure bred dogs, which was evidenced by enthusiastic public attention at the DOGS NSW “Dogs on Show” and the “Sydney Dog Lovers Show”. We must offer more to encourage “new exhibitors” by offering a welcoming environment and further promote and support of our “Dog Sports”.
To that end, the Board of Directors began the process of developing a Strategic Plan to deliver a clear path as to the direction the Company should take into the future, addressing such considerations as, diversification, rebranding, future income streams, challenges driven by our aging demographic, changes in society and their expectaTions and threatening changes to Government Legislation.

THAT the Minutes of the Annual General Meeting of Members held 2 November 2022 and published in the April 2023 Gazette be confirmed.
CARRIED
The Board and the Finance Committee are committed to ensuring we have sound financial stewardship in place as we continue to build our business opportunities and strategic directions for DOGS NSW.
The 2022/2023 fiscal year saw the annual inflation peak at 7.8%, being over a 30 year high along with the highest CPI of 6.0%, since the introduction of the GST in 2001.
This is the environment in which we were operating in the 2022/2023 fiscal year and is reflected by increased expenditure in reviewing the Financial Statement of 2023 Annual Report.
Further, since the reversing of the puppy buying frenzy that was experienced during COVID, at the conclusion of the lockdowns we experienced a reduction of registrations compared to that of 2021. Favourably indications are that the trend is slowly normalising, which is a positive indicator both for our breeders and the Company.
As a reflection of the increased CPI and record inflation, the Company incurred an increase in expenditure, however, to a degree, this has been offset by the term deposit rate being at a record high. Our cash on hand being at a record level at $5.04 million. The 2022/2023 financial year generated a surplus of $92,173.
We are very fortunate to have an extremely professional, experienced and proactive group in our Finance Committee which is chaired by Ross Sinclair with other members being, Christina Rafton, Kyle Charnock, Alan Hunt, Phil Palangas, Anthony Khamis and the Financial Accountant, Kenny Liu, who commenced with DOGS NSW in July 2022, having a diversified 20+ year experience in both financial reporting and management as a qualified Accountant. Kenny has proven to be a valuable asset to the team with his impressive skillsets, dedication and work ethic.

Health and Welfare
The RSNWCC Health & Welfare Charity Ltd 2022-2023 reported as follows:-
• The Charity had a successful year in promoting its aims to promote better health, care, and welfare of dogs.
• The Relief of suffering of dogs: The Charity continued its financial support of AMRRIC (Animal Management in Rural and Remote Indigenous Communities) in its work in managing the tick-borne disease Ehrlichiosis and provided relief for DOGS NSW members who were affected by the severe flooding in 2022.
• Research: The Charity awarded its first research grant to a team from the Sydney University who is Investigating Cannabinoid Receptors as a novel therapy target to treat chronic pain in dogs with Osteoarthritis. Two other projects have been approved for funding.
• Support for Rescue Groups: During the year, the Charity advertised that it was in a financial position to support Breed Rescue Groups but did not get any applications.
The Bill Spilstead Complex
Remediation works to the GSDL rings are planned for this October involving the supply and spread of top-soil with purpose built topdresser, 152 tonnes of 80/20 sand soil mix. The levelling works will be undertaken multiple times at intervals until the grounds are deemed level enough. This will ensure the surface of the rings are as flat and level as possible and will encourage the grass to grow, making it safer for the exhibitors and dogs.
Thank you
It is with pleasure that I present this report. I wish to thank our hard working Committees, fellow Board members and the Company Secretary, Virginia Gagan-Wilson, Operations Manager Anthony Khamis, Grounds Team Leader Chris Gedzyk and all their support staff for their commitment to and determination in making this another productive year for the Company. Of particular note is that processing
of most applications within 1 to 2 business days plus postage remains stable and is the envy of other States. I would like to congratulate the Office staff for this achievement and for their dedication to customer service par excellence!
To the all members, thank you for your ongoing support and positivity. To each and every one of you - may 2024 bring you great success in whatever canine disciplines and activities you enjoy.

THAT the reports of the Directors, as published in the 2022/2023 RNSWCC Ltd Annual Report, be received.
7. CONSIDERATION OF FINANCIAL REPORT –FOR THE YEAR-END 30 JUNE 2023
CARRIED
The President introduced Mr Ross Sinclair, Chair of the Finance Committee, to speak to the Financial Report and advised that regrettably a representative from the Auditors, Morris and Batzloff, was unavailable, however, should any members have questions for the Auditors, they are requested to put those questions in writing and forward them to the Office for onforwarding to and response from the Auditors.
The Financial Report for the year end 30 June 2023, as published in the 2022/2023 RNSWCC Ltd Annual Report, was considered by the meeting.
Mr Ross Sinclair opened by saying that DOGS NSW should be proud as dog family and community as we have emerged from COVID and have a clean set of accounts for this year. Welcome to Kenny Liu to the team bring with him his vast experience financially and is a strong addition to the Finance Team.
Mr Sinclair referred to the revenue and expenditure being $3.413M in revenue, with expenditure of $3.321M in overall expenses which provided the surplus which added to the overall equity for the business of $92,173.00.
As stated previously the normal operations came back, we got out of the flood periods and COVID and back up and running the business which is a credit to all of our Clubs, Committees and members and the Board who do this as a voluntary piece of work which has left us in a very strong position.
The Balance Sheet remains strong with total assets are at $6.9M comprising a current asset position of 5.3, non-foreign assets of 1.6. Total liabilities are at $1.4M so our nett assets at equity are $5.5M.
In terms of our directions as an organisation and financial prowess, we need to look at improved revenue streams, looking at the cost of living and the cost of running a business in 2023 our real focus needs to be on that as well as diversification and strategic directions. Strategic view if really important as well as our diversification.
The President thanked Ross for his report.

Coton De Tulear
History
Also known as the “Royal Dog of Madagascar,” the Coton de Tulear is a member of the Bichon family that came to the island of Madagascar several hundred years ago. At the time, the Bichon Tenerife, the Coton’s distant ancestor, was particularly popular with the women of Europe’s high society, who would commonly bring their dogs with them on long voyages across the sea. European sailors also kept Bichons aboard their ships to catch rats and other pests.
As those ships reached places like South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope and the Indian Ocean, the Bichon Tenerife began to mate with other breeds on the Island of Reunion, located just 500 miles from Madagascar. The resulting breed was the Coton de Reunion, which was fabled to have finally reached Madagascar’s Tulear port after being beached in a shipwreck. As legend has it, the sturdy dogs survived the wreck and swam ashore, giving rise to the modern-day Coton de Tulear after 400 years of natural selection, and a little selective breeding.
The adventurous Coton quickly became a favourite of the Merina, Madagascar’s ruling indigenous tribe. They perceive the breed as a sign of nobility, hence the nickname “Royal Dog of Madagascar.” When French settlers came to the island in the 16th century, they too became enamoured with the breed. Within the same decade, the Coton de Tulear was taken to both France and North America. Today, they’re a favourite all around the world.
The Coton de Tulear gets its name from its fluffy, cotton-like coat, and from Madagascar’s seaport city of Tulear (now known as Toliara), where the breed originated.1.
Appearance
Small, long-haired, companion dog with a white, cotton textured coat, with round, dark eyes and a lively, intelligent expression. 2.
Sizes: Height at withers
Males: 26-28 cm, Females: 23-25 cm
Weight: Males: From 4 kg to a maximum of 6 kg.
Females: From 3.5 kg to a maximum of 5 kg. 2.
Temperament
Bright and sweet-natured.
Of a happy temperament, stable, very sociable with humans and with other dogs; it adapts perfectly to all ways of life. The temperament of the Coton de Tuléar is one of the main characteristics of the breed. 2.
The Coton is a playful, charming, affectionate, intelligent breed. Although generally quiet, it can become very vocal; grunting, barking and making other noises when having fun. Cotons are known to have a habit of jumping up and walking on their hind legs to please people. Most Cotons love meeting new people and are very curious in new situations. 3.
Cotons are easy to train as they are very eager to please. Cotons love to swim, run and play. They adapt well to any kind of living environment. A common trait of the Coton de Tulear is to come alive in the evening. 3.
Coton fanciers describe them as ‘witty’ companions, at times boisterous, but never demanding’ and ‘naturally clownish and lighthearted creatures,’ who possess a ‘remarkably gentle, sympathetic awareness.’

SPOTLIGHT
Health
The Coton de Tulear is in general a healthy breed, however, there are still some health issues as in most breeds. The most serious issues are heart problems, liver shunts, back (disc) problems and eye problems. Luckily, these are still relatively uncommon in the breed. 3.
The average life span of a Coton de Tulear is 14 to 19 years. 4.
Suitability
Coton de Tulears do form strong bonds with their owners and love spending time with them; they can easily get anxious if they’re separated. They’re playful dogs who aren’t afraid to get silly for some praise and attention. They get along with anyone and everyone, whether they are strangers, kids, or other pets like dogs and cats. 1.
They are generally quiet dogs that usually only bark when something startles them. They’re a highly intelligent breed that’s easily trainable and they have lots of entertaining quirks that are sure to make you fall in love with them. 1.
The Coton has a coat that requires brushing and combing almost daily and bathing about once per week to maintain its beauty. Cotons love swimming; owners who have pools are recommended to let their Cotons play in the pool with supervision. Like poodles, they do not “shed”, meaning they don’t drop hair on furniture, carpeting, etc. They do lose hair; the texture of their coat causes the shed hair to be trapped in the coat.
If not brushed and combed daily, the fur of this breed will mat up quickly and may require shaving. Cotons need a walk every day for exercise, but will appreciate a play session as often as possible, and have the endurance to go on a long hike. Cotons love to play with other dogs and they are great with kids. 3.
DOGS NSW ۔ April 2024 21
Suitability (continued)
The Coton is a fairly active dog who requires a moderate amount of exercise. Daily walks with his human at a slow speed will keep him in good weight and condition. Chasing a tennis ball around his backyard can keep his mind active as well as his body. A bored and unhappy Coton de Tulear can become destructive. He does best when provided with enough exercise, lots of attention from his owner, and plenty of interesting toys to keep him occupied. 5.

The
Seaweed that Cleans Teeth!
by the Team at Simply Seaweed
A pet product that has been gaining a lot of popularity recently is “dental seaweed” aka Ascophyllum nodosum.
What is Ascophyllum nodosum
Ascophyllum nodosum is a species of seaweed. It is commonly called Rockweed (amongst other names), though confusingly, several other seaweed species are also known as Rockweed. To confuse things further, it is commonly called a kelp but strictly speaking, it isn’t one! All kelps are seaweeds, but not all seaweeds are kelp!
Ascophyllum nodosum is a common large brown seaweed species found in the cold waters of the northern hemisphere, in particular off the coast of Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Norway. Unfortunately, it doesn’t grow in Australian waters so it must be imported, which is why products containing just Ascophyllum nodosum can’t legally be sold as Australian Made.
What it’s used for
In dogs and cats (and humans too!), Ascophyllum nodosum is primarily used as a dental supplement, due to its clinically proven dental benefits, helping to clean teeth and improve bad breath.
Nutritional supplementation for humans, pets, horses and livestock is another common use, due to its abundance of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, antioxidants and prebiotics.
The seaweed has also been researched in relation to gastro-intestinal benefits, immunostimulatory properties, blood glucose regulation, diabetes management, cholesterol reduction, obesity management, anti-cancer properties and antiviral activity.
Outside of the health and medical industry, Ascophyllum nodosum is used in a variety of applications including beauty products, food manufacturing, fertilisers and helping to decrease the greenhouse gas emissions of cows by reducing their burps and farts! This article will just be discussing the dental benefits for dogs and cats.
How it works
After being consumed by your pet, Ascophyllum nodosum works in several ways to improve dental hygiene, due to its natural antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-adhesive properties. Existing plaque is softened and new plaque is prevented from sticking to teeth. It works best when paired with forms of mechanical abrasion (such as bones, chews, kibble, dental toys, tooth brushing, etc.) to help scrub away the loosened plaque.
The mechanism of action is still not fully understood (despite many studies!), but it is thought that the saliva is affected by the seaweed’s phenols, iodine, phosphates, fucoidans, sulphur, zinc, silicates and sulphates.
Ascophyllum nodosum does not need to come into direct contact with pets’ teeth to be effective. It is absorbed into the bloodstream and changes the composition of the saliva.

FEATURE
Speed of Efficacy
Results do vary (depending on breed, genetics, age, and diet) and may take up to two months to become noticeable. An improvement in breath is usually observed within a few weeks.
How to Use it
In dried crushed/powdered form (pictured below), it’s very easy to use. Just add it to your pet’s food daily! Only a small amount is required – just a pinch or two per day is all that’s required for a cat or small dog. Read the product information carefully to determine the appropriate dosage for your pet. In our experience, dogs enjoy the extra flavour as a meal topper and cats lick their bowls clean. But if your pet is a bit fussy, start with a small dosage and mix it in thoroughly with their food.
Contraindications
There are a couple of things to be aware of with Ascophyllum nodosum (and most seaweeds). Because of its iodine content, Ascophyllum nodosum should not be given to dogs or cats with thyroid issues without first consulting your veterinarian.
The safety of Ascophyllum nodosum in pregnant or lactating dogs and cats, and those under six months of age, has not been established as no studies have been performed. We additionally don’t recommend using it on animals under six months as they do not need it - their baby teeth are going to fall out anyway!
Veterinary Oral Health Council Recognition
The worldwide Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) has recognised the dental benefits of Ascophyllum nodosum. There is currently only one product range containing Ascophyllum nodosum to have been awarded the VOHC Seal of Acceptance. The application process for a VOHC Seal of Acceptance is complicated and costly and therefore not achievable for most businesses.

What are Dog Supplements
Written by Dr Laura Russell DVM. MBA. DABVP.
The market for dog supplements has increased exponentially over the past several years. Pet parents want to do everything they can to ensure their pets have happy, healthy lives.
Supplements are not always necessary, however, dogs that have medical conditions or who are predisposed to developing them can benefit from supplements.
It’s always important to discuss supplement recommendations with your veterinarian prior to adding a supplement to your dog’s diet. Your vet will help you find a product that fits your dog’s health needs.
What are Dog Supplements?
Supplements are defined as any product added to a pet’s regular diet that contains ingredients intended to improve health.
Scientific research has studied many common ingredients of supplements and your veterinarian is the best resource to help sort out products that may be helpful to your dog and their health conditions. While none are magic bullets, many supplements may be helpful in slowing the progression of disease or supporting your dog’s body to prevent illness.
Why do Veterinarians recommend Supplements?
Supplements are often recommended by veterinarians to enhance other prescribed therapies or potentially prevent health issues, such as arthritis, from progressing. In the case of fatty acid supplements, dogs with heart disease or puppies at risk of developing heart disease may benefit from having more of these nutrients in their system.
While a well-balanced diet is the cornerstone of nutrition, supplements can help to augment the nutrients available. Some homemade diets are not reviewed or balanced by a veterinarian or nutritionist, and they often need added supplements to ensure the correct vitamin and mineral ratios are met.
Since these diets tend to be unbalanced, a veterinarian or veterinary nutritionist should ensure the dog’s diet is complete. Vets may offer supplements as a way to help support the nutrients that are missing in these diets.
How supplements work for dogs
Supplements work by adding nutrients to the diet; for some dogs, having more nutrients available to them may help to reduce or prevent some illnesses. Puppies have different requirements than adult dogs due to their growing bodies, and senior dogs often have health conditions that supplements can help treat.

Common Ingredients in Dog Supplements?
Glucosamine and Chondroitin
Glucosamine and chondroitin are common ingredients in many joint supplements and make up a compound typically found in cartilage. Supplements with these ingredients can help joint cartilage stay healthy or heal and support the fluid lubricating the joints. Glucosamine and chondroitin may be recommended for dogs with hip dysplasia, osteoarthritis, cartilage damage, or loose joints.
Keep in mind that glucosamine must be used long-term to see any beneficial effects and won’t treat the pain of arthritis in dogs or joint issues in dogs. Work with your veterinarian to determine the best inclusion of both a joint supplement and pain medication, if needed, depending on your dog’s health.
Antioxidant Supplements for Dogs
Antioxidants are substances that protect cells from free radicals (molecules that circulate in the body). Antioxidants can reduce inflammation, prevent disease and help support the body during natural aging.
Fish Oil Supplements for Dogs
Fish oils are omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants that can improve coat and skin health, support the muscles of the heart and help with brain development.
Probiotic Supplements for Dogs
Probiotics are microorganisms that are beneficial to a body’s normal health processes. Probiotics help rebalance the flora in the gastrointestinal tract to help heal after illness or to maintain good flora levels in pets predisposed to diseases causing chronic diarrhea, or an inability to absorb nutrients. Many times, probiotics are used during or after antibiotic therapy to replace some of the “good” organisms that can be collateral damage with antibiotic use.
Liver Supplements for Dogs
S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e) is a common liver support supplement that mimics glutathione, a compound made by the body that is used to detoxify and protect the liver. Liver supplements are often recommended for toxin ingestion, gallbladder disease, or hepatitis.
Talk to your Veterinarian about Supplements
Always talk with your veterinarian before giving your dog any supplements. Never give human supplements to your pet without checking with a veterinarian, as the dosage ranges can be different and could lead to a toxic reaction in your dog. Calcium, vitamin D and iron can all build up to unsafe levels in your dog’s body if supplements are given at incorrect doses. Many human products also contain xylitol, which is a sweetener toxic to dogs.
Supplements are also not a substitute for your pet’s prescription medication. Never stop giving a prescribed drug without your vet’s approval. Your vet is the best source for information and recommendations when it comes to finding the best supplement for your dog’s needs.

P ETS & Better Sleep
Sharing the bed with your pet can be a positive experience but the environment and conditions (like your dog snoring and cycling in their sleep) may not be the best in supporting your pet’s joints or your slumber.
STAN Pet Beds, the world’s first patented therapeutic, non-toxic bed for animals, is on a mission to give our four-legged friends the benefits of a safe, healthy snooze and pawrents a peaceful night’s sleep!
Studies show good quality sleep strengthens the immune system, supports recovery from injury and illness, and assists memory and brain function. Poor sleep, on the other hand, can lead to a host of health issues, such as restlessness, increased stress and anxiety, change in appetite and more.
“As with humans, good sleep hygiene is also important for the health and wellbeing of our furry friends,” says Michelle Cummins, founder of Australian-made STAN Pet Beds, the world’s first pet bed s a therapeutic and post-op recovery tool.
Cummins has been studying canine sleep and natural health for more than 12 years, working with holistic animal practitioners and expanding her learnings in nutrition, toxicity and stress. She is also pursuing an international qualification in zoopharmacognacy, the study of animals’ self-selecting medicine in the wild.
Cummins explains that our pets can have poor sleep for many reasons, such as stress and anxiety, pain and discomfort, digestive issues, illness, ageing and cognitive issues, and environmental factors (noise, temperature, bedding quality). “While there are many factors that contribute to the quality of sleep our pets experience, what they sleep on has the most immediate impact,” she says.
How can we help our dogs sleep better?
Cummins shares the following holistic strategies to help dogs sleep better:
• Diet: Feed your pet a balanced diet that supports their individual energy balance and digestive health.
• Lifestyle adjustments: Establish a consistent daily routine that aligns with natural circadian rhythms. This includes regular feeding, exercise and sleep schedules.
• Exercise: Engage your dog in regular exercise to help expend energy but avoid overstimulation close to bedtime.
• Behavioural Modification: Address any behavioural issues that may disrupt sleep, such as separation anxiety or fear-based reactions, through positive reinforcement training.
• Environmental Factors: Create a calm sleep environment for your dog. Ensure the sleeping area is comfortable, free from disruptions and maintained at an appropriate temperature. Provide bedding made with natural fibres, such as linen, organic cotton or hemp, which is free of sleep-disrupting toxins/chemicals and supports your individual pet’s needs.
• Light Control: Limit exposure to artificial light, especially in the evening, as it can disrupt sleep patterns. Natural light during the day is beneficial.
• Aromatherapy: Certain essential oils (when used safely and under guidance) can promote relaxation. Lavender, chamomile or frankincense oils may be diffused in the dog’s sleeping area.
• Natural therapies: Consider natural therapies that can promote good sleep hygiene, such as herbal remedies, acupuncture, acupressure and massage.
• Mindful Interaction: Spend quality time with your pet, offering emotional support and companionship to reduce feelings of loneliness or anxiety.
• Regular Check-Ups: Schedule regular check-ups with your holistic vet to identify and address any issues before they lead to sleep disturbances.

P ETS & Better Sleep
Mission to promote wellbeing with non-toxic bedding
Following a personal experience with poor pet sleep, Cummins wants to help give pets a good night’s sleep for the benefit of their physical and mental health, wellbeing and behavioural balance.
Cummins developed the STAN Pet Bed product (previously Henry Hottie Bed) in 2012 for her beloved Tonkinese cat, Henry, who suffered from detrimental health issues. She saw how the bed provided Henry with all-round support in winter and summer, promoted healing and helped to improve his well-being and happiness.
After years of research and testing, STAN Pet Beds became patented in 2019 and today, the range caters to dogs of all breeds and sizes, is designed for all life stages and is even used by horses! STAN Pet Beds will also relaunch cat beds with a new design.
Cummins guarantees the absence of toxic chemicals in STAN Pet Beds that are found in nearly all pet foam bedding. “In an unregulated and over-saturated market of pet bedding, STAN Pet Beds stands alone in both benefit and safety for pets,” she says.
“A STAN Pet Bed is designed to support deeper sleep [REM or Rapid Eye Movement, stage of sleep when most dreams happen], which is essential for physical restoration, brain function and emotional wellbeing.
“From the cushioning of the body by the dual layers within the mattress to the absence of neurotoxic, sleep-disrupting chemicals, a STAN Pet Bed allows the body to fully relax and repair during periods of REM. The species-appropriate temperature achieved in the various sizes will either assist the body to warm down postactivity or support thermoregulation in older pets.”

Case Study #1 ~ Bella
Alicia Anderson has two Bullmastiffs, 5-year old Bob and 7-year-old Bella who sadly suffers from severe arthritis in her hock and other health issues, which involved a large operation. All of this has taken a toll on her.
Bella had broken sleep, “she would get up a lot, move around to other beds/carpets in the house trying to get comfortable. At night she would come into my bedroom and sleep next to the bed instead of staying on her bed,” says Alicia.
Bob and Bella are on good quality joint support supplements, however, arthritis injections for Bella didn’t seem to help.
“I started researching for beds that would give them support and found STAN Pet Beds to give them more comfort as they were getting older,” says Alicia.

Case Study #2 ~ Casper
Casper is a young and very active pooch, always on the go and full of energy!
“He can run like a racehorse!” laughs owner Ayala Roozendaal. “Casper also loves the beach and swimming and socialising with other dogs and people. He’s so good-natured!”
Casper likes to “play hard and then relax and sleep” with a habit of sprawling across Ayala’s king-sized bed, not allowing for a restful night’s sleep!
Ayala is a qualified Canine Myofunctional Therapist (specialised remedial massage therapy) and understands the benefits of supporting Casper’s young and agile body with a good bed and providing him with restful sleep.
“I know how important the right supportive bed is for (particularly senior) dogs with joint problems and dogs recovering from orthopedic surgery,” she said. “It is important to me that my dog has a bed that is supportive of his joints and provides a restful sleep that allows the muscles and tissues to renew and repair. I also know that the quality of the sleep is just as important and makes for a calmer and happier dog.”
Safety and using organic, non-toxic materials in bedding are also crucial for Ayala. “I am aware of toxicity in so many pet beds out there and don’t want my dog to be breathing in chemicals as he sleeps, nor develop any skin issues from what he is laying on. Having done my own research, I want Casper to sleep on natural fibres, like linen, organic cotton or hemp, like STAN Pet Beds.” Plus, Casper seems to prefer the comfort and temperature of his STAN Pet Bed more than Ayala’s bed!
“It’s a good thing – more space for me!” she laughs. “I know my bed is comfortable, but on a hot day, I’ve seen Casper choose to lay in his STAN bed after briefly testing mine out. In fact, it was so noticeable to me that I messaged Michelle (STAN Pet Beds) to let her know that I could see for myself that the bed was providing a species-appropriate temperature. We now have four STAN Pet Beds at home plus the travel bed. He likes to be wherever the family is, so whatever part of the house we are in he has somewhere to snooze.”
ABOUT STAN BEDS
STAN Pet Beds are designed to improve the quality of sleep for your animal. The specific densities of each range of beds, the carefully selected natural organic fabrics for the outer covers, and the guaranteed absence of toxic chemicals (found in nearly all pet foam bedding), have created the bed your pet needs.
Quality sleep sets the foundation for their level of cognitive health (thinking/decision-making capacity), physical recovery from activity, illness or injury and their overall ability to cope with life in the human world.

Key Factors to Maintain a Healthy & Shiny Dog Coa t
WORDS: Isabella Whitmore
One of the most important responsibilities when taking care of dogs is keeping them healthy and happy. This includes making sure that their fur is clean and in good condition. Because a dog’s coat can greatly affect their overall health and comfort, here are the key factors to maintain a healthy and shiny coat.
All dogs are beautiful no matter what their hair looks like. But as a fur parent, it can be frustrating to see your dog having coat problems; like experiencing dry and flaky fur or excessive shedding. More importantly, a healthy and nice-looking coat is not just for appearance. It helps them regulate body temperature, protects them from cold weather and keeps their skin away from dirt which may be carrying bacteria.
Unlike humans who may just have a bad hair day, dogs’ hair problems are more complicated than just appearance. Their coat condition can be an indication of health issues, such as diseases, allergies, nutrient deficiency, and parasite infestation to name a few. These health problems can be manifested by excessive hair loss, dry and flaky coats and dull fur.
It is important to take care of your dog’s coat. Here are what you can do to help maintain their healthy, shiny dog coat:
Providing a good diet
Nutrient deficiency can greatly affect pooches’ fur. They need a sufficient amount of protein and Omega-3 and 6 fatty acids to maintain a healthy coat. Protein helps regrow lost hair from shedding. While the fatty acids help nourish the skin to secrete natural oils making the coat shiny. Feeding nutritious, quality dog foods ensures your pet is getting enough of the nutrients needed for well-conditioned fur.
Carefully Choosing a Shampoo
Some shampoos are too strong which can remove the natural oils in the skin, leaving the fur dry or even falling. Always go for gentle shampoos or better yet, those with oat or olive oil to help nourish skin and coat. You can find shampoos for your specific needs, such as anti-tangle or whitening shampoos. Avoid using anti-tick and flea shampoos as they can cause hair dryness and dandruff.
Regular Brushing
Regular brushing helps remove tangled and fallen hair which prevents coat matting. A common hair problem, mostly for long-coated dogs in which their fur forms a mat on a dog’s body. This can spread to the whole body causing severe discomfort. (Refer to the article on page 30 - ‘Essential Tips for Effective Dog Brushing’)
Avoid Excessive Bathing
Pooches do not need frequent bathing as they know how to groom themselves. They only need to bath once a month to allow the natural oils in their skin to nourish their hair and make it glow. Too much bathing can wash out natural oils in the skin, which can lead to dull and dry hair.

Ensure your Dog’s Skin is Ready for Summer
As spring and summer arrive many dogs experience skin problems. The most common sign that your dog has problems with his skin is persistent itching and scratching.
Your dog may also experience excessive licking, shaking his head or rubbing his face or back on the floor or carpet. If not treated effectively your dog could experience skin rashes, extremely dry skin and hair loss.
Skin irritations in dogs can be caused by many factors from a simple nutritional deficiency that can be treated with food supplements to a hormonal imbalance. Knowing the cause of the irritation is an important part of effective treatment.
Just as the changing of the seasons can affect the moisture levels in human skin, seasonal changes can play a significant role in the moisture levels in your dog’s skin. Dry skin allows irritants to get under the surface of the skin and can cause redness and inflammation. Supplementing your dog’s diet with Omega-3 & 6 oils can help make sure your dog’s skin is ready for the summer.
Seasonal allergies, such as hay fever, can also affect the quality of your dog’s skin. A dog releases histamines in response to pollen through his skin. A dog with seasonal allergies can be a most miserable creature if he goes untreated. The symptoms can be soothed by giving your dog a bath in an oatmeal shampoo or another shampoo designed to soothe the skin.
Frequent grooming also helps remove pollen and other dirt and irritants from the dog’s coat. Again, supplements containing Omega-3 & 6 oils can help keep the dog’s skin healthy and better able to fight off the irritants.
Parasites, such as fleas and ticks, are the most common cause of skin irritations for your dog. Fleas and ticks are easy to see and there are many effective treatments available to help rid your dog of the parasites and relieve the symptoms. Mites are more difficult to detect as they are microscopic. Your dog would need to be examined by your veterinarian in order to diagnose mites. Mites are the cause of mange, a skin irritation that causes hair loss. Mange requires extensive treatment with special parasiticidal shampoo and medications that can be administered topically, orally or by injection. If untreated, mange can be a life-threatening condition.
As spring and summer continue, with dog skin problems it is important to observe your dog for any signs or symptoms of skin irritation. Make sure that your dog is getting an adequate amount of Omega-3 & 6 oils. Check frequently for fleas and ticks. Keep the skin and coat clean. Make sure your dog’s skin is ready for the summer.
As always, please consult your local veterinarian if you have any concerns.

clumps which can lead to skin infections if overlooked. This practice forms an integral part of maintaining your dog’s health, ensuring the coat stays clean, shiny and most importantly, healthy.
Integrating these dog brushing tips into your regular pet care routine can intensely affect the quality of your dog’s life, offering a myriad of health benefits while strengthening the bond you share with your canine ally.
Dog Brushing Techniques
Proper dog brushing techniques are the cornerstone of any effective dog grooming routine. Advice from veterinarians and professional dog groomers underscores the impact strategic brushing has on a dog’s physical and emotional state. Understanding how to brush a dog plays a pivotal role in eliminating discomfort, promoting shine and nurturing their overall health. For a task that yields such profound benefits, it’s worthwhile to master the methods that keep your pet’s coat in its best condition.
Step-by-Step Guide on How to Brush a Dog
Commence with selecting the best dog brushes suitable for your dog’s coat type. See the table below to select what you need for your type of dog coat. The process begins at the head, gently working your way down in the direction of hair growth, ensuring a soothing experience for your canine friend. Short, smooth strokes allow for the even distribution of natural oils, which champions a glossy coat. Vigilance during brushing also allows pet owners to spot any irregularities in the skin, such as bumps or lacerations that might require medical attention. This step-by-step approach not only cleanses and untangles but also strengthens the bond between you and your pet, making consistent dog grooming a shared moment of tranquillity and care.
1. Bristle Brush Short Hair Removes loose hair, dirt Daily to Weekly
2. Pin Brush Long, Silky Hair Detangles, smooths Several times a week
3. Slicker Brush Curly, Dense Coats Breaks up mats, removes tangles At least weekly
4. Undercoat Rake Thick Undercoats Thins out undercoat, Bi-weekly to Monthly
Managing Mats & Tangles in Your Dog’s Coat
Encountering mats and tangles can be quite a conundrum during grooming sessions. However, managing these challenges is a breeze with patience and the right tools. A detangling spray coupled with a sturdy comb can work wonders in gently separating knots without causing distress to your pet. Should mats become too intricate, professional groomers advocate for judicious trimming instead of forceful combing, as the latter can cause skin irritation and pain. The aim is to preserve your dog’s comfort while maintaining a clean, mat-free coat.
Frequency & Duration: Tips for Consistent Dog Grooming
Consistent dog grooming doesn’t require clockwork precision, but it does benefit from regularity. Frequency and duration should be customized to your dog’s unique coat and lifestyle. Short-haired breeds might thrive on weekly sessions, whereas long-haired companions could need daily attention to prevent matting. Aligning your dog’s grooming schedule with your availability ensures that this healthful habit is maintained without becoming a chore. Not only does this regimen support a pristine coat, but it also serves as an early detection mechanism for potential health issues, maximising the joy and vitality of your furry family member.
