Well, hopefully lockdown has finished for good by the time this report is read.
Obviously shows have been cancelled, however, some will be postponed and hopefully rescheduled to run later this year. We will inform you as dates come to hand.
On the election of Board members, the new ballot papers have now been sent out and any completed ballots need to be in with the Returning Officer by the 20 August. Please insure that you vote, however, think before you do so, so that your vote has the most impact: vote for those who will work for the good of the organisation.
The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) is undertaking a limited review of the Codes of Practice, covering the main areas that have created the most angst within the public. Input into the review was invited from the major stakeholders, so the Media and Government Legislation Committee has come up with sensible descriptions/suggestions in problem areas, which includes fence heights, record keeping, fire fighting equipment along with several others.
In addition, we were asked to include any extra concerns that were not listed and have added our concerns regarding security, night kennels, as well as increased welfare in the actual whelping process and care of puppies. The suggestions put forward by the Media and Government Legislation Committee have been finalised and approved by the Board so that the feedback table could be sent back to the DPI by the due date.
The Review to the Codes of Practice is due to be completed by 31 August. As soon as we have any updates about the Codes, we will be informing everyone of any changes made.

The Sydney Dog Lovers Show is a major event that was affected by COVID-19 restrictions, not only in 2020, but now in 2021, with their original date (in August) now postponed until Saturday and Sunday, 11 and 12 September. Their new ads appear in this edition (both in the magazine and the gazette) and are a reminder of the change of dates for next month. Here’s hoping the event will be able to take place this year for the organisers. Fingers crossed.
A few DOGS NSW events, which have been lucky enough to continue were the Library and Archives Committee Show, which took place early May along with Dances with Dogs April Competition.
Mrs Elizabeth Gunter (NSW) judged General Specials at the Library and Archives Show and a number of Queensland judges, who were fortunate enough to be able to attend the event, also did a wonderful job on the day. Coverage of the event commences on page 12 and winners of the Dances with Dogs Competition are featured on pages 19-20.
We have two interesting feature articles in this edition; the first being, Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD) and how to distinguish the symptoms of this condition against those of normal aging. It also discusses strategies to keep your canine friend healthy and happy in their golden years and keep this disease at bay. This is an easy to read article with some valuable content. Many thanks to the Morris Animal Foundation for permission to re-publish this for our members. The article commences on page 21.
The second feature article is written by Professional Consulting Veterinarian, Dr Jessica Mill BVSc (Hons I) and discusses the sharp incline of pet obesity since the current pandemic has hit. She outlines how to best combat and support healthy weight management of pets with 10 informative tips and also suggests the extra support of your local vet. The article commences on page 25.
There are not many members who reach their 90th birthday with lots of style, but that’s what long time breeder of Irish Setters, Norma Hamilton did in March of this year, when she celebrated her life at a party hosted by Guy Spagnolo and friends. Please turn to page 10 to read more.
The spotlight feature for this month is the Russian Black Terrier, a brave, alert and even-tempered breed, with an intensely loyal bond with his family. As they display natural guarding and protective instincts that usually start to show around 18-24 months of age, it is a breed that requires early training, as these instincts will need to be properly channelled. It is not a breed suggested for a novice owner.
The winners of June’s competition, ‘Dr Claire’s Love your Dog book’ were Louise Noyes, Corina O’Neill, Karen Wyers, Berenice Hill and Kathy Drew. Winners of ‘How Stella Learned to Talk’ book were Robyn Axelrad and Alisa Sannikova.
to all the winners!
Kerry Kerry ChristofiAn international study led by UNSW researchers has mapped one of the most intact and complete dog genomes ever generated. The genome sequence of the Basenji dog (Canis lupus familiaris) could have a big impact on the understanding of dog evolution, domestication and canine genetic diseases.
The Basenji, also known as the barkless dog, is an ancient African dog breed which still lives and hunts with tribesmen in the African Congo. In the study, published in BMC Genomics, the researchers say the genome of the Basenji, which sits at the base of the dog breed family tree, makes an excellent unbiased reference for future comparisons between dog breeds and evolutionary analysis of dogs.
“The dog was probably the first animal to be domesticated by humans and has subsequently been artificially selected by humans into a great diversity of dog breeds of different sizes and shapes,” lead author of the study and senior lecturer in Genomics and Bioinformatics at UNSW Sydney’s School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, Dr Richard Edwards says. “Before this paper, it was difficult to interpret differences between the dog reference genomes and non-domesticated dogs, such as dingoes, jackals, coyotes, wolves and foxes. Big changes could be the result of recent artificial selection during creation of the specific reference breed. By adding such a high-quality genome at the base of the domestic dog family tree, we have provided an anchor point for studies that can help establish the timing and direction of genetic changes during domestication and subsequent breeding.”
Dr Edwards says the Basenji genome sequence is different to the traditional dog reference genome, CanFam, which is of a highly-derived breed, the Boxer. He says the choice of dog reference genome can affect the results of future dog genetics studies looking at genetic variants. “For example, the Boxer is much more closely related to other Mastiffs than other breeds,” he says. “This may introduce biases in genetic analyses across many dog breeds. There is also the risk that breed-specific variation may map poorly, or not at all, to a biased reference. In principle, the Basenji is equally distant from most modern breeds, making it a less biased basis for comparisons.”
Dr Kylie Cairns is an expert in dingo identity and evolution in the Centre for Ecosystem Science in UNSW’s School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences. She says the Basenji genome now provides a high-quality comparison to all domestic dog breeds for future studies. “As Basenjis are a very old breed, they provide the perfect comparison to more modern breeds to explore how breeds were developed, the 2 process of domestication and assist in studies looking for disease genes,” Dr Cairns says. “This genome will also be critical in comparisons to wolves, dingoes and village dogs as an example of an ancient domestic breed.”
She says the Basenji genome may allow scientists to more fully unravel the evolutionary history of early dogs and how humans have shaped the first dogs into the companions and breeds we have today. “Many people wouldn’t realise that most dog breeds arose in the last 200-300 years,” she says. “So having access to a high quality refence genome from an ancient breed such as the Basenji gives insight into early breed development and how domestic dogs have been shaped by humans in the last few thousand years. “We will also be able to tackle lingering questions about the evolutionary history
of dingoes and their relatives in New Guinea, with the Basenji acting as a halfway point between non-domesticated dingoes and truly modern dog breeds like pugs, kelpies and poodles.”
Dr Edwards says the genome of the Basenji is one of only a handful of referenced quality genomes for specific dog breeds. The first of these was a German Shepherd, Nala, which Dr Edwards also contributed to last year. Dr Edwards says researchers combined three cutting edge genome sequencing technologies to assembly the Basenji dog genome, which is based on a female dog called China. “Over 99% of the final genome assembly can be found in the 39 pieces that represent the 39 dog chromosomes,” he says. “These chromosomes only have one hundred regions of unresolved sequence, which is the fewest of any published dog genome so far. This makes it one of the highest-quality dog genomes produced to date.”
The study also features a number of interesting genome assembly case studies that demonstrate the importance of curation and careful analysis, even for high-quality genomes. “Even the best technologies can still make mistakes,” Dr Edwards says.
For example, the mitochondrial genome, a separate, small genome belonging to the cell’s energy generators, had mistakenly been assembled into the middle of one of the chromosomes at one stage. “Genomics has a come a long way in recent years, but we’ve not reached perfection yet. At the same time, it is not possible to manually scan over two billion DNA letters for mistakes. Part of what drives the research in my lab is finding improved ways to use computers to help identify and fix these errors.”

A number of the ‘old timers’ of the NSW dog fraternity gathered at Guy Spagnolo’s Driftway property on March 20th to celebrate Norma Hamilton’s 90th birthday. The event was coordinated and hosted by Guy, his partner Ross Selvaggio, Janelle Salvestrin and Paul Middleton.
Norma’s “Quailmoor” Irish Setters were renowned both here and around the globe for their exquisite breed type and Norma herself, for her glamorous looks and trademark red hair! Many of the current top winning Irish Setters, both here and in New Zealand, can be traced back to the Quailmoor lines.
Despite the current travel issues, friends flew in from Victoria and South Australia. During the evening Norma also got to Face Time with friends in New Zealand and Finland, making it an even more memorable evening. Many of Norma’s long time contemporaries also attended, each of them highly successful breeders in their own right.
Having had a full knee replacement surgery only a few short weeks earlier, Norma easily kept pace with the other party goers.
It was a wonderful evening, celebrating a life very well lived, with everyone present looking forward to the next milestone in 10 years time!

The DOGS NSW Library & Archives Committee were pleased to offer a show on 8 May 2021, featuring Queensland Judges for all groups and Mrs Elizabeth Gunter (NSW) for General Specials.
It was a very tense week before the show, as COVID-19 restrictions could have possibly resulted in the Queensland judges being unable to fly to New South Wales, or return, without quarantining for 14 days on return.
Fortunately our full panel were able to attend, with the exception of Ian Rassmussen, who I’m sure will judge for us at a later date. Judy Ireland, Roslyn Seare, Diana Norman, Amanda Cooney, Jane Amatys, Mandy Shellback and Graham Kerry completed the panel. Amanda Cooney was contracted at the last minute to replace Ian and left straight from work, doing some last minute shopping on the way. It was also her first Hound appointment interstate, so we were thrilled that she accepted.
Our day began with heavy fog, but cleared to a beautiful, sunny day with just the right temperature for showing.
NSW Judge, Mrs Elizabeth Gunter had some lovely dogs to judge in General Specials and she chose for Best in Show, Irish Setter SUP. CH. FANTANGO RED BULL, owned by Mr P Middleton & Ms J Salvestrin (pictured left). Runner up was Bearded Collie, SUP. CH. EDINGLEN SOMEBODY STOP ME, owned by Mrs M Lincoln.
We hope you will join us in 2022 when we will be holding a double show, in conjunction with the Ladies Kennel Club.

The Russian Black Terrier was born out of necessity. Following WWII, the Red Star kennels had been decimated and as the Soviet Union needed a military dog, General Medvedev and geneticists created the concept of a Russian National dog. The foundation dog was Roy the giant Schnauzer, along with a Rottweiler, Airedale Terrier and Newfoundland. These main four and numerous other breeds, including the Caucasian Shepherd Dog, were the basis of the breed we have today, for both civilian and military uses. In 1958 the first Russian standard was written, declared a separate breed in Russia in 1981, accepted in the FCI in 1996 and recognised by the ANKC in 2001.
The first pair were imported to Australia in 2001 by Ross and Dot Sweeney, ‘Stryka’ CH Zornoi James Bond (IMP FIN) and Best Guard Deniza (IMP RUS). These two are behind the majority of Russian Black Terriers born in Australia, imported for their trainability and temperament. From the original litters SUP. CH. Ciamarron Rubeus Hagrid and his brothers GR. CH. Cimarron Gengis Khan and Cimarron Aszier Khan, all still have a strong influence today.
They are a large, robust, balanced, very agile, athletic and powerful breed. They have great strength and endurance, are massive boned, with well developed muscles (when mature) and are deep chested. Differences between sexes is to be clearly defined.
The head should be proportionate to the body (although it is large, massive and long). The skull is moderately broad, with a flat forehead. The topline of skull is parallel with the topline of the muzzle, which is strong and broad but shorter than the skull.
The moustache and beard accentuate and give volume to the head. The head should give the appearance of power and strength, as this is one of the hallmarks of the breed.
The eyes are oval, set straight wide apart and dark in colour.
Ears are hanging, set high on the head, medium sized triangular in shape, but not be pronounced above the top of the head when alerted.
The mouth is a scissor bite, with full dentition. Their neck is strong, dry and muscular, the length approximately equal to the length of the head.
The forequarters are strong and viewed from the front are straight and parallel. The distance from the elbow, which is held close to the body, is roughly 50-52% of the height of the dog. The front feet are large and round and toes can be webbed; the rear feet are slightly smaller and oval.
The Russian Black Terrier has a free, forward moving, springy, energetic trot with good reach and drive. Their body is solid, deep, voluminous, well balanced, with a slightly sloping topline from withers to tail. Withers more pronounced in males. Loin is strong, wide and muscular.
Russian Black Terriers come in black, or black with grey hairs strewn through the coat. (Grey intermingling hair should not cover more than a 1/3 of the whole body).
Coat length untrimmed is between 5-15 cms with a rough, thick, wavy double coat, with course outer hairs covering the entire body and length. They are low shedding and require intense grooming for the show ring. Their beards tend to get wet when drinking so be prepared to be dripped on a lot.
A desirable trait is black pigmented skin on the roof of the mouth and black spots on the tongue are common.
Dogs: 72-76cms, not more than 78cms, no less than 70cms. Bitches: 68-72cms, not more than 74cms, no less than 66cms.
These heights in both sexes may vary slightly as long as they are proportionate balanced and are of excellent breed type.
Original working lines were smaller and dogs that directly come from these lines should not be penalised when judged.
This breed has great trainability, but can also be willful and stubborn. A calm confident, highly intelligent dog, they are instinctively protective, determined and fearless. Alert and deeply loyal to owners, in a split second up and ready to defend their owner/family if needed. Once the perceived threat has passed, they will quickly settle.
I cannot stress enough that good socialising of dogs when growing is of utmost importance, as well as enrolling in puppy preschool. Obedience classes is highly recommended, plus taking puppy on outings to as many different situations as possible.
The breed can be aloof with strangers and does not suffer fools. They are not keen on their personal space being invaded by strangers and are very slow to physically mature: males are around 4+ years old and females are around 3.5 years. Possessing self assurance and courage, they can also be very playful and
clownish, love to have jobs to do and like routine. They thrive on being with their family and although not generally clingy, they need to know their family is safe and accounted for.
Russian Black Terriers make fabulous family members, but with any dog, care should be taken with small children and they should never be left unattended. This breed sometimes forget how big they are, as they love the company of people, but they are not necessarily for the first time dog owner. The breed is more suitable for an owner experienced with very strong guarding breeds, but having said that, to their families, they are like big cuddly bears.
With a large breed care should be taken with growing joints: low impact exercise when young, until joints have finished growing, is highly recommended. This will help prevent early onset arthritis. Parents should be hip and elbow scored, plus DNA tested for hereditary diseases: the main ones being HUU (Hyperuricosuria) painful bladder stones, JLPP (Juvenile Laryngeal Paralysis Polyneuropathy).
Being a deep chested dog they can also be prone to bloat, so care is required when feeding and watering after heavy exercise. Lifespan is generally 12-14 years.

We had an outstanding Dances with Dogs competition on April 18, 2021 at DOGS NSW grounds. Entrants of all levels danced their hearts away to the tunes of ‘Jailhouse Rock’, ‘Walking on Sunshine’, ‘Highway to Hell’, and ‘Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo’.
We had 64 people entered in the trial, which is a record number. One impressed dog was heard to mutter that this “was the biggest DWD trial ever in the history of mankind!” Many handlers were competing for the first time and a good number of them even got a place.
Anyone who is thinking of trying their hand with Dances with Dogs should really give it a go as everyone enjoyed it and many did better than they expected. Come on folks, let’s break our own record and reach 65 entrants or more!
Words: Anna Bryant Photos: Joan StewartThe Dances with Dogs Committee are busy organising upcoming Workshops for both Dances with Dogs and Trick Dog, however, this will be pending venue availability and any further COVID restrictions.

We all love a nuzzle from a graying nose, or a cuddle with a four-legged friend who’s been with us through good and bad times. Advances in veterinary care are helping our dogs live longer lives and dog owners want to make sure those extra years are filled with special moments. A growing awareness of the challenges of aging is leading dog owners and veterinarians to learn more about diseases affecting older dogs and develop strategies to keep dogs healthy and happy in their golden years.
Many dog owners are concerned about behaviour and personality changes they see in their aging pets. In a recent Morris Animal Foundation pet owner survey, 36% of respondents listed senior dogs as an area of canine health of greatest interest to them, followed by 31% of respondents who listed behaviour. Mental sharpness can decline over time in both people and dogs, but some dogs suffer from a more serious condition called Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD). We are learning more every day about CCD and what owners and veterinarians can do to maintain quality of life in our dogs’ senior years.
It’s not unusual for us (including those with four legs!) to have slight declines in memory over time. In people, it’s estimated that 40% of people over the age of 65 will experience mild memory loss. However, other than the frustration that comes from grasping for a word or trying to remember where you put your car keys, mild memory loss doesn’t affect day-to-day functioning. Most people retain many strong memories and can learn new information and tasks into advanced age.
It turns out, the same pattern of age-related mental changes occurs in older dogs. Slight lapses in attention and memory are normal and not cause for concern.
What is important for dog owners and veterinary professionals is to recognise changes that aren’t part of normal aging. This includes understanding more about normal aging signs and signs related to CCD.
Veterinary neurologists, behaviourists and CCD experts report that the three most common misconceptions about canine aging are:
• Cognitive impairment reflects normal aging and is inevitable
• CCD is not a common disease
• There are no effective preventives or treatments
These misconceptions can keep owners from seeking care, and veterinarians from recommending treatments that can help dogs with CCD. The earlier that signs of CCD are detected, the sooner owners can intervene to reverse or slow disease progression.
CCD is a neurodegenerative disease similar to Alzheimer’s disease in people. Studies in dogs with CCD reveal that changes in brain tissue appear to be similar to those noted in people with Alzheimer’s. However, disease progression differs between the two diseases and there is evidence that some signs of CCD can be reversed, while this is generally not the case with Alzheimer’s disease.
The estimated prevalence rates of CCD range from 14% to 35% in the pet dog population, with the prevalence dramatically increasing as dogs age. One study found the prevalence of CCD was 28% in dogs aged 11 to 12 years old, but jumped to 68% in dogs 15 to 16 years old. Unfortunately, because many owners and veterinarians tend to accept some cognitive decline as normal, the true incidence of the disease is probably higher than what is reported.
Another prevalence study followed cognitive abilities in a group of dogs more than 8 years old over a two-year period. They found that 33% of dogs with normal cognitive behaviour at the beginning of the study progressed to having mild impairment during the study period. In addition, 22% of the study dogs with mild impairment developed CCD in the same time frame.
The bottom line from all these studies is that CCD is more common than originally suspected, and owners and veterinarians need to be on the lookout for changes consistent with CCD.
Diagnosis of CCD begins with a complete physical examination to look for other conditions that can either mimic CCD or impact the diagnosis.
Signs of CCD can develop in mature dogs (defined as 50-75% of expected lifespan) most people might not consider elderly. Veterinarians should include an assessment of behaviour and cognition in annual exams for dogs reaching middle age, while dog owners need to pay special attention to their dog’s mental sharpness, too.
Many signs are associated with CCD, but the most common include:
cycle disturbances
interaction with owners
of house training
wandering/pacing/restlessness
If an owner notices any of these signs, even if infrequent, they should consult with their veterinarian. Many concurrent diseases can be ruled in or out with a complete physical examination and routine bloodwork.
common aging-related diseases
Loss of hearing or sight
partial or complete
Painful orthopedic diseases, such as osteoarthritis
the diagnosis of CCD.
lead to behaviour changes (for example, house soiling)
Systemic diseases such as chronic kidney disease, that can make a dog feel ill and less likely to engage with their owner
For the majority of dogs with CCD, the diagnosis is made after other possibilities are excluded, since there are no specific tests for CCD.
That said, there are reports of brain changes detected on an MRI that can be helpful in making the diagnosis. An MRI also can be considered if other diseases, such as brain cancer, are strong possibilities and further confirmation is needed.
Known risk factors include:
• Age having been objectively demonstrated in many studies
• Epilepsy dogs with this disease have a higher likelihood of developing CCD at an early age, and dogs with a history of cluster seizures or high seizure frequency are at the highest risk
• Activity level dogs engaged in training activities were less likely to develop CCD
Other risk factors, such as sex, reproductive status and anxiety disorders haven’t been shown to be consistently associated with CCD. Some controversy remains about the potential relationship between body size and CCD as well. Many of these questions can be addressed with comprehensive studies, such as the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study and the Dog Aging Project that will use standardised assessment tools on large numbers of dogs.
Keeping your dog fit and trim has many positive effects, such as a greater capacity for exercise, that could indirectly benefit brain health. Dietary supplements and diet may have a role to play, too.
Although still under investigation, increasing evidence shows dietary supplements may slow progression of CCD. These may include:
• Omega-3 fatty acids
• SAM-e
• Melatonin (for dogs suffering from sleep/wake cycle disruption)
• B vitamins
Supplements can have negative interactions with medications, so be sure to check with your veterinarian first.
Commercial diets are available that follow many of the dietary recommendations for improving brain health as suggested by research studies.
It’s also possible to formulate a home-prepared diet that combines many brain protective recommendations, but care needs to be taken to make sure the diet supplies adequate overall nutrition. Consult with a veterinary nutritionist, who can help create special diets, and your veterinarian, who can help coordinate this collaboration.
While dogs can’t do crossword puzzles or sudoku, the idea of use it or lose it applies to them, too. Exercise and play remain important, especially as dogs age. Play time that incorporates aerobic exercise (with modifications to account for underlying conditions) is recommended. Introducing new toys and new tricks (yup, you can teach an old dog new tricks) can help keep an older dog’s mental function sharp.
Finding unique ways to stimulate your pet also can provide mental benefits. Many canine rehabilitation facilities are starting to offer programs for senior dogs that include swimming, massage and social interaction in a novel environment. Dogs use their noses to help make sense of their environment, so taking walks and allowing dogs to take their time sniffing is an easy way for older dogs to get additional stimulation.
Adhering to a firm schedule for walking, feeding and bedtime can help older dogs with CCD as well. If a dog is struggling with breaks in house training, owners should think of treating their dog as a puppy, taking the pet out more frequently and rewarding them when they are successful.

The current climate has negatively impacted the health of our pets, as we have all become more sedentary due to lockdowns across Australia. In fact, pre-pandemic statistics showed that over 50% of pets are overweight and 90% of pet parents with an overweight pet don’t realise that they are overweight.
To help combat the issue the experts at Hill’s Pet Nutrition Australia analysed over 4K pet obesity-related Google search terms to uncover the nation’s most frequently asked questions on the topic in order to work out exactly what is concerning pet parents right now. The research found a 24% rise in concern regarding pet obesity compared to the previous year, highlighting a need to tackle the knowledge gap amongst owners in support of optimal pet health.
The 7 most-searched-for questions are below and Professional Consulting Veterinarian, Jessica Mills BVSc (Hons I) has provided expert advice to answer these:
1. Is my pet overweight?
2. How much should I feed my dog?
3. How much should I feed my cat?
4. Why is pet obesity a problem?
5. Is pet obesity getting worse?
6. Is there any difference in obesity between cats & dogs?
7. How can pet obesity be fixed?
Pet obesity is sadly a common yet preventable issue. As such, our veterinary expert has shared top tips for pet parents to follow as we mark one year since the pandemic hit disrupting daily exercise and nutrition routine.
• A healthy weight can vary between breeds and species, and you need to know what’s ideal for your pet type. Typically, you should weigh your dog or cat in kilos and keep this figure in your pet’s health file as a clear starting point.
2. Calculate exact calories…
• You need to know how many calories your dog or cat requires in order to maintain a healthy balance: consider age, weight activity level and breed type amongst other things. Feeding guides on food packages are just that, a guide. Your pet’s feeding amount may need to be adjusted to support their individual requirements. The team at your local veterinary clinic will be able to help determine your pet’s ideal body weight and energy requirements.
• A nutritious diet can make a huge difference in your pet’s lifelong health and happiness. Nutrition not only impacts your pets’ weight, but also contributes to healthy digestion, strong bones and a beautiful coat. Precisely balanced nutrition is key to any pet’s weight management journey.
• Many pet owner’s simply ‘guestimate’ when it comes to feeding both dogs and cats the right amount. Weighing out your pet’s food is the most accurate way to measure their food, but using the measuring cup provided by the manufacturer can also keep you on the right track. The feeding guide on the pack will provide you with a good starting point. Alternatively, your veterinary health care team or manufacturer’s helpline can help you determine the ideal amount to be feeding your pet.
• Free Feeding your cat or dog can result in an ‘all-day buffet’ with owners constantly keeping the pet bowl full, and whilst you may think you’re keeping your pet happy, you may be contributing to those extra kilos through too much readily available kibble.
• Don’t feed table scraps to your pet, especially if they are trying to lose weight. It might seem like a little ‘here and there but for some pets, it can be the equivalent of a whole meal. In human calorie terms, 28gm of cheddar cheese is the equivalent of 1.5 burgers for your 9 kg dog or 3.5 burgers for your 4.5 kg cat!
• Instead, get into the habit of rewarding good behaviour with fun, not with food. Pay your pet extra attention and affection with more cuddles, walks or playtime.
• Many pets will overeat when they are bored. Puzzle feeders (see above) or treat balls can be used to help keep your pet mentally active and slow down their eating habits by making them work for their food.
• For dogs, look at simple ways to increase their exercise. Maybe it’s possible to add a couple of extra walks a week or increase the length of your daily walk. Or maybe you can change the route so they are exercising more intensely: going up hills or stairs are great to burn calories. Another great option is to find games they like such as fetch so that you both enjoy these daily exercise sessions.
• For cats, simple games such as “hunting” the light can encourage them to move more. Simply shine a torch on the floor and walls and the natural movement will encourage your pet to chase it. For cats that love their food, puzzle feeders and dividing the meal around the house can encourage more movement whilst they eat; in fact you can actually teach your cat to hunt for their food by hiding it around the house.
• Ensure that everyone involved in your pet’s care is aware of any changes to diet, exercise or health regime. That way, it will be a lot easier for your pet to keep to their required plan and you will be more likely to stay on track as everyone can join together, to encourage a healthier lifestyle.
• It is important to have a base understanding of what is normal when it comes to the weight and size of your pet, just like you would do with your own body. Make sure you are regularly performing health checks and you know signs to look out for. Unexpected or sudden weight loss or weight gain could be an indicator of underlying disease and a good reason to check in with your vet.
• At the end of the day, healthy weight management for your cat or dog is a lifestyle change. Remember there is no quick fix and that nothing happens overnight. But by looking at the diet and exercise regime of your pets, you can help keep them healthy and happy for many years to come.
