Dear Members,
2022 has presented DOGS NSW the most challenging times so far, from the DPI Animal Amendments Bill, to the Emma Hurst Puppy Farming Bill; plus two separate major flooding events within 4 months, culminating in the closure of our DOGS NSW grounds. The Royal New South Wales Canine Council Health & Welfare Charity is offering assistance to those members and their dogs affected by these floods. Those affected can contact the Charity through the following emails: secretary@caninewelfare.org.au or president@caninewelfare.org.au
Our regrets go out to all Affiliates and Committees who have tried to organise events on the DOGS NSW grounds. I realise the hours of work that go into volunteering when trying to achieve an outcome that benefits the members. I extend a big thank you to all involved in trying to make these events happen.
The prestigious DOGS NSW/Royal Canin International Spring Fair is in an area of some unpredictability due to the wet weather the DOGS NSW complex has endured. Members will be notified with ample opportunity if any changes to the event transpire. It is hopeful that the Spring Fair will be able to be conducted at the DOGS NSW Complex.
Members should be proud that DOGS NSW excels above other State Bodies in the completion of registrations and associated administration.
At present, DOGS NSW is optimistically moving forward with the application of West Invest Government grants, which may provide substantial financial support for an undercover facility at Orchard Hills.

Sadly, due to the continuous rainy weather, there are few show reports on the horizon for the magazine, however, we have managed to include in this edition, coverage of the double championship shows held on Saturday 7 May by the DOGS NSW Library & Archives Committee. Shows. The report commences on page 12.
We have two interesting articles featuring Assistance Dogs, the first one is about these wonderful companions in the workplace and the impact they have for those in dire need of their help. The article is written by the Chris Diefenthaler, Executive Director of Assistance Dogs International who interviewed two people whose lives have changed immeasurably since the introduction of their four legged friends’ assistance. The second article is from the University of South Australia, who conducted a study into the effects of Assistance Dogs with children with autism. The results are discussed, along with test case pictures, and includes the interview with one of the parents, which is most enlightening. The study confirms the positive effects for not only for those children with autism, but for the families as well. Please turn to page 22 to commence reading about Assistance Dogs.
Last year Australians lost over 3.5 million dollars to online pet scams, as three intersecting threads of pandemic culture resulted in the perfect storm. Whether you’re a puppy buyer or a breeder, it’s important to know how you can protect yourself, your money and your identity. Perfect Pets is an Australian owned and operated online pet directory that has processes in place to screen out scammers since launching a decade ago. Fortunately, these processes stood up to COVID madness. The site lists Dogs Australia (ANKC) breeders and works closely with the Member Offices to ensure that new account applications are carefully verified. Maria Arnold, from Perfect Pets, has written an article to inform our members about the hazards and what to do if you find that your identity has been stolen. Entitled ‘Puppy Scams & Breeder Identity Theft’ the article is a must read for you to be forewarned and to put steps in place when advertising. The article commences on page 20.
Also in this edition is a news article on page 8, ‘A new study shows how diet has transformed the ancient dog into a family pet,’ a feature on “What’s your dog’s lifespan?’ (page 10), plus information on the 2022 Cobber Challenge (page 26).
Winners of June’s competition, to win a copy of “How to Love & Survive your Teenage Dog” by Barbara Hodel were: Sigrid Boehme, Michelle Oldfield, Kathy Drew, Carol Daniel, Trish Carlier and Jenny Tyrrell.

How old is your dog in human years? And what factors contribute to a long and healthy life for a dog?
For years, it’s been generally accepted that “dog years” are roughly human years times seven: that a one year old puppy is like a seven year old child, and an 11 year old elderly dog is like a 77 year old senior citizen. But it’s actually much more complicated, say experts.
Part of the problem is that while humans have clear metrics for healthy aging, little is known about “normal aging” for our four-legged friends. Big dogs tend to age the fastest, maybe 10 times faster than humans, while little breeds may live to be 20 years old, with “dog years” about five times human years.
The Dog Aging Project (DAP) , founded in 2018, is by far the most ambitious project tackling the question of canine longevity, enrolling and studying tens of thousands of dogs of all sizes, breeds and backgrounds to develop a thorough understanding of canine aging. Their open-source dataset will give veterinarians and scientists the tools to assess how well a specific dog is aging and will set the stage for further research into healthy aging, in both dogs and people.
The researchers detailed their project and its potential implications for both human and veterinary medicine in an article published in the current issue of the journal ‘Nature’. One of their most intriguing avenues of inquiry will analyse the DNA of exceptionally long-lived dogs, the “super-centenarians” of the dog world.
“This is a very large, ambitious, wildly interdisciplinary project that has the potential to be a powerful resource for the broader scientific community,” said Joshua Akey, a professor in Princeton’s Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics and a member of the Dog Aging Project’s research team. “Personally, I find this project exciting because I think it will improve dog and ultimately, human health.”
Akey, a dog lover with a five year old rescue dog named Abby and a one year old purebred Labrador Retriever named Zoey, co-leads the genetics analyses with Elinor Karlsson at the Broad Institute.
“We are sequencing the genomes of 10,000 dogs,” Akey said. “This will be one of the largest genetics data sets ever produced for dogs, and it will be a powerful resource not only to understand the role of genetics in aging, but also to answer more fundamental questions about the evolutionary history and domestication of dogs.”
The Dog Aging Project (DAP) expects to run for at least 10 years. To date, more than 32,000 dogs have joined the “DAP Pack,” as the researchers call their canine citizen scientists. “We are still recruiting dogs of all ages, all breeds, purebred or mixed breeds, all sizes, all across the United States,” said William Thistlethwaite, a graduate student who works with Akey in the Lewis-Sigler Institute. “Especially puppies and young dogs up to 3 years old.”
When a dog joins the Pack, their owners agree to fill out annual surveys and take measurements of their dogs for the duration of the project; some may be asked to collect cheek swabs for DNA sampling. In addition, the DAP team works with veterinarians across the country who assist by submitting fur, faecal, urine and blood samples of select Pack members.
researchers hope to identify specific

“Given that dogs share the human environment and have a sophisticated health care system, but are much shorterlived than people, they offer a unique opportunity to identify the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors associated with healthy lifespan,” said Dr. Daniel Promislow, the principal investigator for the National Institute on Aging grant that funds the project and a Professor of biology at the University of Washington (UW) College of Arts and Sciences and of laboratory medicine and pathology at the UW School of Medicine.
In particular, the researchers want to look at 300 oldest dogs in the Pack to see if they can identify the keys to their longevity. “One part of the project that I am super excited about is a ‘super-centenarian’ study, comparing the DNA of exceptionally long-lived dogs to dogs that live to the average age for their breed,” said Akey, the Princeton geneticist. “This is the first study of its kind in dogs (to my knowledge), and I think it’s a clever way of trying to find genetic differences that contribute to exceptional longevity.”
Within a few months, the team plans to open their enormous dataset fully anonymised to share with scientists around the world. Researchers from many different fields will have the opportunity to contribute to the study in countless different ways, based on their interests.
“It is an honour to share our work with the scientific community,” said Kate Creevy, lead author on the paper and DAP’s Chief Veterinary Officer. “The Dog Aging Project is creating a resource with the power to transform veterinary medicine, aging research, and many scientific and non-scientific fields of inquiry.”

We were very fortunate with good weather for the two shows as well as a lovely panel of Judges, some first time for their groups. General Specials Judges were Mr Milan Curk for the Red Show and Dr Karen Hedberg BVSc for the Yellow Show, both judging their first All Breeds General Specials.
As usual, Tom Couchman looked after the entries, cataloguing and certificates. Technology is certainly moving along with stewards using tablets to record results, which go straight to the office. This service certainly makes things much quicker and assists those organising the show by reducing the number of people required on the ground. We look forward to continuing improvements at shows.

The Clumber Spaniel is named after the Duke of Newcastle’s Nottingham country estate, Clumber Park. The breed was definitely with the Duke prior to 1788, and seems to have been with the family even as early as the 1750s. A heavy, large, white spaniel often featured in artwork throughout the British Isles and Europe for centuries before this, it was one of the first breeds to be named. The breed has been owned by the English Royal family for generations, HRH The Princess Royal currently has a small kennel for field work.
The Clumber is bred for hunting in heavy cover where the largely white coat makes it easy to see. The breed’s strong build ensures it is able to penetrate dense undergrowth to flush or retrieve scarce game. This breed possesses great stamina, is a silent worker with an excellent ability to track, and a fit and well bred dog will not tire from a long day of moderately paced work.
The Clumber Spaniel is not hyperactive, but is active. The Clumber is a friendly, sociable and charismatic companion. The Clumber is gentle, loyal and affectionate, mostly dignified, but is reserved with people and environments he has not met before.
The Clumber has a bulky and strong hindquarter which balances well with the weight of the forehand making him ‘well balanced’, and heavy set onto short legs. This allows his body to appear longer than other breeds. His legs are not stumpy but shorter than ‘average’. His physique gives him strength and power to push through undergrowth, but the length of body to be able to climb over boulders and logs, and reach a long way onto a kitchen bench.
He is also notable for his facial expression, large feet, soft to touch coat and the free spread of his shedding white hair.
The Dogs Australia breed standard requires adults to be between 25 (minimum for adult females) to 34 kg (maximum for adult males). A large adult male should not be taller than 50cm at the withers nor less than 43cm, however the standard makes no requirements.
Clumbers typically can be expected to live between 10-12 years of age, but with correct nutrition and and optimum environment will live to 15 plus years. Sufficient exercise is needed if the Clumber is to avoid gaining weight and to avoid losing muscle tone and bone strength which are required throughout a healthy life.
The breed is often cited as being prone to hip dysplasia, but if the dogs are bred to meet the requirements of the breed standard this is rarely a problem (Australia’s hip score record demonstrates this, but breeders must be very careful in choosing which dogs to breed, to avoid a decline in this record). The breed has two confirmed autosomal recessive defective genes (PDP1def and EIC) that breeders must screen for to avoid producing unhealthy puppies.
As with poor hip joints, breeders must be careful in choosing which dogs to breed to avoid eye rim and shape issues which, if they develop, will cause pain and require surgery (yes, the pricey sort) (entropion/ectropion).
Clumber Spaniels have a generally low maintenance, thick, soft weather-resistant coat. To avoid shedding hairs falling, hair brushing and combing should be done on a regular basis.
The breed’s eyes and ears should be regularly checked. Trimming the feet on top and underneath, the feathering under the ear hole, from the wrist to the foot on the front legs and from the hock to foot on the hind legs every 3 weeks should be sufficient when regularly combed through
The Clumber is happiest in a group-living situation with a canine (preferably Clumber) friend for company. The breed usually adapts well to other non-dominant breeds, but can be just as content in a single dog family if he has a fair amount of human company throughout the day. He dislikes rigorous, repetitive, regimented training, prefers to learn through observation and will copy quickly as he has a great desire to interact with and please his owner, and revels in positive reinforcement techniques.
Generally, the breed is really very intelligent, and also stoic in the belief that what they learned was what was meant to be taught, so owners need to be aware of the their own inaccuracies in teaching a skill.

Last year Australians lost over 3.5 million dollars to online pet scams as three intersecting threads of pandemic culture resulted in the perfect storm: a huge increase in demand for pets; lock downs, which prevented people from meeting breeders in person and relying on a third party to deliver their pet; and more fraud. Add to that the fact that the price of pets skyrocketed and scammers were looking for new and better ways to cash in. They needed to fool even the most cautious puppy buyers - those who might look for and check credentials – so breeder identity theft also hit new heights.
What the scammers learned during this time won’t be unlearned, so whether you’re a puppy buyer or a breeder, it’s important to know how you can protect yourself, your money and your identity.
Breeder identity theft occurs when a scammer uses a breeder’s details, information and/or photos to create fake online advertisements. They will:
• use Photoshop to adjust a photo of a registration card
• create an email address using the breeders prefix
• provide the breeder’s phone number for verification purposes, and then elect not to display it
• and even build a near exact copy of a legitimate breeder’s website and Facebook pages complete with photos, litter information, the breeders name and address, everything. Stolen, copied and up on a new website complete with an online payment portal.
Scammers submit their ads to as many online platforms as they can, most of which are published without review.
While the number and impact of scammers grew during COVID, they’ve been at it for a long time. Perfect Pets is an Australian owned and operated online pet directory that has had processes in place to screen out scammers since launching a decade ago. Fortunately, these processes stood up to COVID madness. The site lists Dogs Australia (ANKC) breeders and works closely with the Member Offices to ensure that new account applications are carefully verified. This is critical to ensuring the site remains secure and safe from scam activity and is part of an ongoing effort, because small changes in the online space can have a big impact, and fast.
Monitoring scam activity is critical and Perfect Pets has seen scammers moving into other parts of the pet industry. In the last six months fundraising scams, via fake veterinary websites, have started to appear. The Australian Veterinary Association have been made aware and are understandably alarmed. It’s important we are all vigilant and use a combination of good old fashioned teamwork and cooperation as well as the best and latest technology to keep up.
Breeders are also vulnerable beyond the online space as scammers may target them directly. One breeder was contacted by a prospective buyer who told her that she’d been scammed and felt she needed a photo of the breeder’s driver’s licence and registration to proceed with purchasing a puppy. The unsuspecting breeder emailed the photos through, and before long her information had been used in countless scams where her name, business and photos were used to trick people. Apparently many of them actually turned up at the breeder’s house to collect their puppy, only to be told they’d been scammed and should contact the police.
In the last 10 years Perfect Pets has put a lot of effort into trying to educate the general public about how important it is that they only buy from responsible, registered breeders. It’s now evident that there’s another message that we all need to get out there Pet lovers need to become responsible buyers!
There are a number of reasons that scammers succeed:
• People looking for pets are often impulsive and impatient they want their pet now, or yesterday, and will often buy a puppy from wherever they can find one.
• People are prepared to pay very high prices for pets: $10,000 $15,000 is not at all uncommon and typically for crossbred dogs from inexperienced, unregistered breeders, where there’s been no health testing or other measures to ensure the well being of the puppy. Paying these prices just encourages greedy and unscrupulous people to get involved and cash in. Puppies listed on Perfect Pets average from $2000 $5000 and this is for a well bred, fully health tested pedigree puppy from fully registered ANKC breeder.
• People aren’t taking advice and making sure that the ‘breeder’ they are talking to is a legitimate breeder, let alone registered and responsible.
Perfect Pets always lets breeders know if accounts applications are submitted that are fraudulent and have used their details, and to date not a single scammer has had an account approved. While we’re happy with that record, we do know that if scammers are submitting fake ads to us, they’re usually posting them on other online sites that don’t verify credentials. We always send breeders the details that have been submitted and then they are in a position to take all/ any of the following steps:
• Call the scammer and pretend to be enquiring about a puppy. They usually want email communication only, but sometimes they will answer the phone. Get as much information as you can, where are they (ask if you can visit), do they need a deposit (they will), so organise to get the bank account details, and importantly, work out if they are here in Australia. A lot of the scammers are from overseas, but there’s a lot of Australian scammers too. If they are in Australia, you should contact your local police. In our experience you can be lucky, or unlucky, with the amount of help you get, but it’s aways worth reporting. From our side we can, and have, picked up location information from our website and shared it with the police to help track down scammers.
• Send a cease and desist email. Also inform them that you’ve notified authorities with all of their details, including their location (determined from their activity on the internet).
• Check other sites that run pet ads. See if you can find ads for your prefix and breed. Not many are thorough with verification, some do no checks at all. If you find that your details are being used, contact the website and ask them to remove it immediately, and let them know that the police have been informed.
• If you have an online presence, let people know where you do and don’t advertise. Some of the breeders on our site have a message saying: ‘’we only advertise on perfect pets and dogzonline,” others go into more detail, for example....
“Please note: We do not advertise on other platforms. If you see advertisements elsewhere using our photos, description, our registered prefix, or our breeder registration number, you are probably looking at potential imposters and scammers. If you have seen anything like this please contact us via Perfect Pets to ensure you are contacting us and not scammers.”

Take Your Dog to Work Day (TYDTWDay) was created by Pet Sitters International and first celebrated in 1999. PSI created the day to encourage businesses to allow dogs in the workplace for one Friday each year to celebrate dogs as companions and promote their adoptions from local shelters, rescue groups, and humane societies. This day, usually held on June 24, is a fun event for all workers, however, for many assistance dog users, taking their dog to work with them is not just a bit of fun it’s a must!
“Don’t let the fact that you have an assistance dog hinder your progress in your career,” advises Paul Green, who takes his PTSD assistance dog Dezi to work with him. “Companies have to be reasonable, and provide reasonable adjustments to support you. Obviously there are limits, but for most people, there shouldn’t be a problem.”
Usually taking place on June 24, Take Your Dog To Work Day is a chance for owners to show co-workers and managers the benefits dogs in the workplace can bring, such as improved mental health and better productivity. Research suggests that employees with access to dogs are less stressed than those who have none, and physical health improves when workers take their dog for a lunch time walk.
But while Bring Your Dog To Work Day might be a bit of once-ayear fun for most of us, assistance dog users often find employers less than welcoming on a daily basis. “There are a lot of misconceptions about what a service dog can and can’t do,” says neuroscientist Joey Ramp, who takes her service dog Sampson to work in the science labs at the University of Illinois. “I would advise employers to be open minded and include the service dog user in the conversation. It’s the little things that can make a difference. Can we move a desk so there is a little more space for the dog? Can this person take an extra 15 minutes at lunch to make sure the dog has time to go outside?”
“My co-workers were always very enthusiastic, there was not one of them that I encountered that had an issue. The biggest hurdle was teaching them how to interact, or not interact, with a service dog,” she adds.
Sampson is Joey’s second service dog after a catastrophic brain injury in 2006, which left her with mobility issues. He’s the first service dog to be granted access to laboratories with BSL1 and BSL-2 biosecurity ratings, and is a familiar sight round the university with his own set of personal protective equipment (PPE) (see pictured left). After years of campaigning, Joey, who also runs Empowerability Consulting, an organisation dedicated to helping service dog users get access to the workplace, says some progress has been made, but much more needs to be done.
“It’s impossible for me to imagine my working life without Sampson now, but it has been a difficult process, and I have had to be very vocal,” she says. “Now there are guidelines for service dogs in laboratories, and lots of universities have inclusive guidelines. The direction has changed in a positive way for example, I have students with service dogs who are training to be doctors. That’s super exciting, it’s starting to open a lot of doors.”
After a long career as a police officer, Paul lives with PTSD and had to retire on medical grounds three years ago. It was then that his wife Steph suggested he apply for an assistance dog. “Dezi gave me a reason to get up in the morning. I had to feed him, take him out for walks, and twice a week I would drive an hour to do the training. He’s like my best mate really.”
Like Joey, Paul, a first aid and mental health first aid trainer with First Aid Easy has had mostly positive experiences of taking his assistance dog to work. “I go into various work places, schools and Scout groups and Dezi always comes with me. It’s been relatively easy for me to adapt to taking him to work. I’m also a part-time truck driver I asked my employer if it was OK to bring him with me and they just said ‘It’s not a problem you’ve got an assistance dog and you’re legally entitled to take him with you. He’s better behaved than some of the staff!’”
Not everyone is so understanding, however. “I’m currently applying for a job and the hoops I have to jump through in terms of adjustments is quite hard I’ve almost given up. The process is the barrier, the list of questions and forms you have to fill in.”
Both Sampson and Dezi are certified assistance dogs, trained by programs accredited by Assistance Dogs International, the world’s leading standards-setter and accreditation body for training assistance dogs. Sampson was trained by Paws Giving Independence in Illinois, USA, while Dezi, himself a rescue dog, was partnered with pPaul through Service Dogs UK. Both Joey and Paul stress the importance of having a professionally trained, certified dog.
“For me, having a dog trained by an ADI accredited member is about being confident that both you and the dog are doing it right. It’s about the training, the support, the insurance and knowing that you are doing it the right way,” Paul explains.
“Having Sampson trained from the age of eight weeks to eighteen months, and then a further nine months’ training because he was going to work in a laboratory, made a very big difference,” says Joey. “I’ve worked with a lot of people who have self-trained their dogs and some of them are successful. But you’re setting yourself up for failure, because you’ve got one dog and that dog won’t necessarily make it.
Paul believes Dezi not only gives him confidence at work but even saved his life. “What difference has Dezi made? I’m still here, aren’t I?”
Assistance Dogs International is the world’s leading standards-setter and accreditation body for training assistance dogs. As a worldwide coalition of nearly 150 non-profit member organisWWWWWWWWWa tions spread across five continents, ADI is the world’s most di verse and inclusive assistance dog certification and standard-setting body.

I would always go with a dog trained by an ADI accredited organisation.”
A new Australian study looking at the impact of an autism assistance dog for children and their parents has made an unexpected discovery: the dog has expanded their world, literally.
The presence of a specially trained therapy dog for autistic children is giving families the confidence to venture further afield and to many more locations, according to researchers from the University of South Australia.
University SA researcher and qualified occupational therapist Dr Shelley Wright, who supervised the study, says the freedom to explore new places is something most of us take for granted, but for children with autism and their parents, this is normally fraught with sensory challenges.
“Impulsive and unpredictable behaviour is a feature of autism and taking children out of their usual environment is often too stressful for both child and parent,” Dr Wright says.
UniSA Honours student Rebecca Appleby conducted interviews with eight families paired with an autism assistance dog (AAD) as a support for their child.
The study revealed the following results:
• On average, families visited 8.5 more places and travelled 20 kilometres further from their home after having the dog for more than a year.
• Parents reported greater freedom for young children with severe autism, who were normally strapped in a pram for safety when leaving home. An AAD replaced the pram but still acted as a natural restraint.
• Prior to receiving an autism assistance dog, parents were reluctant to leave the family home because of the stress involved, leading to feeling trapped and isolated. The dog allowed them to venture out because their child was calmer and safer in its presence.
• Parents reported fewer meltdowns among their children who sought out the dog when feeling overwhelmed.
• Children on the autism spectrum often get lonely as they find social interaction and communication difficult. The dog gave them much needed companionship.
“In summary, many parents were not sure how they managed without the dog,” Dr Wright says. “The parents we interviewed were much happier and more at ease leaving their home with their child after getting an autism assistance dog.
“A new finding from this study was the sense of freedom and peace of mind stemming from the dog sleeping with the child, improving sleep for the family as a whole and alerting the parents when the dog woke up and, in one case, was having a seizure.”
The only frustration reported by parents was a lack of public understanding about access rights in relation to an assistance dog, with some places not understanding the law and refusing them entry.
Mt Gambier resident Chantel King, whose 13-year-old son James is autistic, vouches for the positive impact of Winter, a black Labrador who was assigned to the family in 2011.
“James was just a baby when we got Winter but the difference that he has made over the years has been breathtaking,” Chantel says. “We were able to go on outings as a whole family, rather than being split up and someone having to stay home to watch James. James was given a whole new world of freedom he never had access to before, thanks to Winter.”
Now retired from full time assistance dog duties, Winter is no longer legally able to accompany James in indoor settings, but he has more than fulfilled his role.
“Over the past 10 years Winter has expanded James’ world in countless ways, including giving him the confidence to perform in an eisteddfod, graduate in front of his peers, travel interstate and venture into public places. He has transformed our lives as a family,” Chantel says.
See below and opposite a collage of images of James and Winter together, which span the 10+ years since he was first assigned an assistance dog. Thanks to Chantel King for allowing us to use these images.
The Cobber Challenge is a unique opportunity for Australian and New Zealand farmers to measure just how hard their dog works. It has become an international celebration of the unsung hero of agriculture working dogs.
For the first time in its seven-year history, the Cobber Challenge is showcasing how farm dogs work together, with nominations calling for working dog teams. The Cobber Challenge Relay recognises that dogs have different strengths some excel at paddock work, others shine in the yards. This year it will be the hardest working team that will be crowned winners.
“We are thrilled that our competition is showcasing teams of dogs, reflecting how they really operate on the farm,” says Kellie Savage, Cobber’s Marketing Manager.
The Cobber Challenge Relay is a unique opportunity for Australian and New Zealand farmers to measure just how hard their dogs work. The competition celebrates dogs’ contribution to farms, as well as the connection between farmers and their canine companions.
Twelve teams from across Australia and New Zealand will be selected to compete in the three-week Cobber Challenge Relay. Farmers can now nominate teams of two, three or four dogs. Each day of the three-week competition, they will select one of their dogs to wear the GPS collar for that day. The GPS collar tracks how far, fast and for how long that dog works. To ensure that the work is shared around, the most one dog team member can have their work tracked is 12 days of the competition.
“The Cobber Challenge Relay also lets dogs take a break, which is important when they work across diverse environments and climates, whether that’s hot and dry or cold and wet, or anything in between,” Kellie says.
Last year’s winner, Victorian Ben Jeffrey and his Australian Kelpie Skyblue Jack (pictured above), set a Cobber Challenge record of 1012.6 kilometres over the three-week competition.
Ben, a Leading Hand at 3200-hectare farm in Victoria’s Western District, could not be prouder. “I’m in awe of my dog,” Ben says. Six-year-old Skyblue Jack mustered sheep for drenching; checked up on lambing ewes and showed his owner ones that needed help; and shifted sheep and cattle onto paddocks with more feed.
Ben loved connecting with other competitors and people from the industry through the Cobber Challenge. Ben thinks the new relay format represents how farmers work with a team of dogs, which are of different ages, training levels, personalities and strengths.
“I currently have eight dogs, and different ones work the yard and the paddock,” says Ben. “Jack happens to excel with both cattle and sheep, and he’s handy in the yards. But often times farmers would be switching between different dogs for these jobs.”
“Jack’s happiest when he’s working I even had to hold him back on a few days to make sure he still had plenty in the tank.”
“He is thriving. It’s like my dear friend and stockman mentor used to say, ‘Take an old dog for a hard road’.”
Ben encourages farmers to throw their hat in the ring afor the 2022 Cobber Challenge Relay. “Make sure you have fun, that’s the important part.”
As well as the glory of being a Cobber Champion and ample supply of Cobber Working Dog feed, this year’s winner will receive $2000, the runner-up $1000 and third place $500 to be spent on their working dogs.
Cobber Working Dog food fuels these dogs during the Cobber Challenge, as it does for thousands of dogs around the country every day.
