Chairman's Report

Dear Members,

Thank you to my fellow Board members for electing me to the Chair of DOGS NSW.

I would like to thank the outgoing directors Mr Myron Arthur, Mr Russell Britten, Mrs Lynette Brown, Mr Allen Lee and Mrs Jan Seary for their time, work and effort in many areas of our organisation over the years, apart from the monthly meetings, many hours have been spent on a daily basis addressing the many DOGS NSW issues.

A warm welcome to our incoming five new Board members, Mr Kyle Charnock, Mr Angus McIrath, Mr Simon Mills, Mrs Rosemary Privett and Mr Glen Vernon. I look forward to their input and ideas that they will bring to our board room.

Our 2021 AGM was conducted under extremely difficult conditions, with the weekly changing of COVID restrictions, and a big thank you to Virginia, Anthony and our office staff for making it happen.

Our membership is so vast and varied, with members from different areas of expertise, be it political, commercial, legal, advertising etc. I would encourage any member, who feels they have something to offer in a particular area that could benefit our organisation, to email a director of our board.

The major issue which still must be foremost in our minds is the Animal Rights and regulatory body areas, which we need to scale up with a controlled and rational force, with our focus on the promotion of “responsibly bred purebred dogs” to the whole community.

We all look forward to being able to see familiar and new faces again at our upcoming shows, obedience, agility trials, and all the other dog sports, enjoying what so many of us have missed over the long COVID restrictions.

Regards

Merry Christmas

Editor's message

This month certainly has come around very fast, after a turbulent year of COVID ups, downs and restrictions. Hopefully this Christmas will bring you together with your friends and loved ones in a more stable environment and 2022 heralds new beginnings with a safe, more relaxed lifestyle for us all. Fingers and paws crossed.

Now that we can get out and about and the weather is warming up, why not take a trip to the beach with your dog to cool off, either early morning or later in the afternoon, to avoid the heat of the day. Most dogs enjoy the beach, particularly if they love the water, however, there are a few dangers you should be aware of, to protect your canine companion before venturing out. Some of the ways to protect your dog at the beach are just common sense, however, a few reminders of some of the dangers and how to avoid them never go astray; like making sure they avoid sea creatures, taking plenty of extra water for them to be hydrated and limiting their time in the water. This article may contain some things you may not have thought of, but any forewarning of potentially harmful situations is great knowledge to have and could protect your dog. The article, by tails.com, commences on page 11.

Part Two of the Barking article, “How to stop your dog from barking” is featured from page 20 in this edition. Published with permission from Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance, the article discusses how training techniques and behaviour modification can help, as well as other tips that can assist with what can be a most trying time for both you and your dog. This is a comprehensive feature, which hopefully can assist with some positive outcomes for those owners desperate for some peace, quiet and less stressed dogs.

Fruit is not the norm when it comes to dogs, with some fruits being quite harmful and toxic to canine digestive systems. Being high in sugar, any fruit which is deemed to be safe, should be taken in moderation. The article appearing on page 26, ‘Can dogs eat fruit?’ addresses exactly what type of fruit dogs can eat in moderation, what they contain and how they should be eaten. The article further discusses how is best to introduce fruit into a dog’s diet and what fruit is deemed to be harmful to dogs.

We had some great entries for October’s ‘Digestive K9’ competition and winners were: Jennifer Baker, Louise Bennett, Michelle Janes and Yvonne Lauder. Congratulations to all winners!

I’d like to wish all of our members and their families a very Happy Christmas, and with the New Year ahead allowing us more renewed freedom to enjoy our lives, loves and lifestyles.

Frances

On the 30 December 2020, The Newfoundland Club of NSW Inc. and the Newfoundland community of Australia in general, lost an icon of the breed with the passing of Frances Wilson, a Life Member of The Newfoundland Club of NSW Inc., following a long illness.

My wife and I first met Frances in the early 1970s when she was operating her Planhaven kennel at Dural on the outskirts of Sydney. Frances had previously been involved with horses prior to her involvement with dogs, breeding, training and competing with them and was an accomplished horse woman. She had also been involved with other dog breeds prior to her involvement with Newfoundlands, namely Chow Chows, Shih Tzus and Irish Wolfhounds.

We didn’t become good friends until 2000, when we purchased our first Newfoundland from Frances, Planhaven Son O Mel, who we called Teddy, much to the disapproval of Frances who had a line of her own Teddys but Teddy it remained.

Frances became Australia’s most prolific and successful Newfoundland breeder in the early 1970s, following successful matings she carried out with a number of well credentialled dogs imported by other previously established Australian breeders. After having whelped her first Newfoundland litter in 1969 from Ch Seamaids Panda, who she had acquired from her breeder, John Hughes, these and other subsequent matings by Frances produced many outstanding dogs. They went on to win numerous Best of Breed awards at Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane Royal Shows, Best in Show awards at All Breed Shows, as well as Newfoundland Specialties, producing many Champions: a number of Grand Champions, a Supreme Champion, as well as many wonderful progeny. Some of Frances’ outstanding dogs from the early years were Ch Planhaven Presto Teddy, a Landseer, who dominated the Newfoundland Show scene in the mid to late 1970s, winning many major awards at Royal Shows and Specialties. He became one of the top Newfoundland sires in Australia, siring many Champions.

Another of her early Champions was a dog imported from the UK called Guiness (Edenglens Born Free). Guiness became the most successful sire of Newfoundlands in that era. He sired 10 Best in Show winning progeny, including Ch Planhaven Hard Astern, who had over 20 Best in Show awards to his credit and a Best in Group at Brisbane and Melbourne Royal Shows. Another son of Guiness, Ch Planhaven Big Mac, at the age of 6½ years, won Best in Show at Melbourne Royal Show. A son of Big Mac, Ch. Planhaven Thunder Bay, won 7 NSW Newfoundland Specialties and 11 Best in Show awards at All Breed Shows. He was the sire of the famous Ch Planhaven Thunder Dome. Thunder Dome won 13 Specialty or Semi Specialty Best in Show awards and 42 All Breed Best in Show awards, which at the time was a world record for the breed. A son of Thunder Dome, was the well known Ch Planhaven Brand Nu Teddy who was Challenge Dog at Sydney Royal Show at 9 years of age. Another prominent sire was an imported dog from Europe, Ch Ursula’s Indian Son Of Dipper who produced many winning Newfoundlands including Grand Ch Planhaven Black Sultan, a Specialty winner, a Best of Breed winner at Sydney and Melbourne Royal Shows and multiple Best in Show winner at All Breeds level, who was owned by Donna and Dave Bailey.

The aforementioned stud dogs had a major influence on the breed in Australia in that time and the most successful show Newfoundlands in the late 1970s to early 1990s had at least one or two of these Planhaven dogs in their pedigrees.

In the early years of Planhaven, Frances operated her kennel very successfully in Dural. Around 1981 she relocated her operation to her beloved Planhaven property at Berrima in the Southern Highlands, with it’s cold climate very conducive to breeding and raising Newfoundlands.

In the late 1970s, Frances began a collaboration with Allan and Denise Robins from Waterbear Newfoundlands in South Australia, which produced a number of Champion Newfoundlands, including the stunning Ch Waterbear Dan Ruff, who was actually a grandson of Ch Planhaven Hard Astern and Ch Planhaven Galaxy. Dan Ruff went on to win over 70 Groups, including Sydney and Melbourne Royals and 25 All Breeds Best in Show and 7 Newfoundland Specialty Best in Show awards. Around 2000 the Robins relocated to Georgia in the US for work commitments and also relocated their Waterbear operations where they continued to breed successfully using their existing Planhaven lines. They have exported a few Newfoundlands to Australia, including the very successful Ch Waterbear Winner Takes It All To Planhaven and his litter sister, Thriller, who are from Frances’s lovely bitch Ch Planhaven Catch Me If U Can, who had been imported to the US by the Robins in 2007. Winner has had a successful Show career in Australia, winning Best in Show at the Newfoundland Club of NSW Specialty in 2012 and Best of Breed at Sydney Royal Show in 2012, along with many other awards. He has produced many progeny including the first Planhaven Supreme Champion, Sup Ch Planhaven How High The Moon, campaigned by Julie Pajaczkowski, who was awarded Best of Breed at Sydney Royal Show in 2017 with his litter sister, Ch Planhaven Magic In The Moonlite awarded Runner Up Best of Breed. Winner also sired Ch Planhaven Dream Maker who was awarded Runner Up Best in Show to Winner at the Newfoundland Club of NSW 2012 Specialty.

VALE
Wilson 1/3/41 ~ 30/12/20 PLANHAVEN NEWFOUNDLANDS

In 2010 Planhaven suffered a serious setback when a tragic fire destroyed the main kennel building, a large timber structure that had previously been horse stables. Sadly, one Newfoundland and one of Frances’ Shih Tzus perished in the fire. The Newfoundland sadly was one of ours, our lovely girl Millie, who was boarding at Planhaven with her brothers Nelson and Ringo, who survived unscathed along with 13 other dogs. The fire was devastating for Planhaven, but Frances soldiered on, albeit, with greatly reduced accommodation and facilities.

In 2013, Frances made the major decision to relocate her Planhaven operation from her long time location at Berrima to the Gold Coast hinterland in Queensland, to escape the severe winters of Berrima, which were beginning to impact her health. It was a major logistical exercise. Frances continued breeding on the Gold Coast and had a number of litters. Unfortunately, the move to the Gold Coast wasn’t as successful as Frances had hoped for and, in 2015, she made the difficult decision to move her operation back to Berrima.

In the years following her return to Berrima Frances’s health continued to deteriorate and she scaled back her operations at Planhaven somewhat, but, ably assisted and cared for by Robyn Parkin and her husband Ross, and at various times by Julie Pajaczkowski and other friends, the breeding and showing operation continued and continues to this day, with the Planhaven prefix living on in the capable hands of Robyn and Ross Parkin.

Many humorous stories exist in relation to Frances’s exploits in attending dog shows and other activities associated with her Planhaven operations; too many to list here. One such story that Lindy and I had the pleasure of being part of was her victory in a novelty event, the “Over The Hill Handlers” competition at the Newfoundland Club of America National Specialty in 2008 at Warwick, Rhode Island, which we attended with a small group of Australian / New Zealand Newfoundland friends. The competition was held in conjunction with the prestigious Top 20 competition, a formal annual event at the National conducted as a night time indoor event, where the Top 20 winning Newfoundlands in the US for the preceding 12 months are judged by a panel of judges to select the top winning Show Dog in the US. Frances’ win was well received by the large audience in attendance, including her Australian / New Zealand support group.

Frances will be remembered as an icon of the Newfoundland breed in Australia, and one who was a virtual walking encyclopedia of Newfoundland history: breeding, pedigrees, show results, as well as knowledge of the breed, both in Australia and worldwide. As evidenced by the preceding records and information, she had a major impact on the development of the Newfoundland breed in Australia and beyond. She was willing to share that knowledge and information freely with other Newfoundland owners, both show and pet owners, breeders and fanciers. She passionately supported the Newfoundland Club of NSW Inc. and held a number of committee positions with the Club, including the position of President on a number of occasions. Frances was ultimately awarded her richly deserved Life Membership Award from the Club for her service and will be sadly missed by members of the Newfoundland Club of NSW and the Newfoundland community in Australia and worldwide.

Frances was farewelled at a Memorial Service at Planhaven in March this year.

The Newfoundland Club of NSW offers our sincere condolences to Frances’ brother Martin and her family. Rest in peace Frances.

How you can protect your dog at the beach by tails.com

Summer is the perfect time to head to the nearest beach with your dog and family, but to make your day a relaxing experience there are a few things to keep in mind.

Watching your pet race up and down the sandy beach, playing fetch or splashing around in the water make for a great summer day. But what are the dangers of drinking saltwater? And what can dog parents do if their pooch consumes too much seawater?

Consuming seawater can result in harmful side effects for your canine companion, such as diarrhoea and vomiting and in extreme cases can lead to seizures and even death. Head Vet at tails.com Sean McCormack has shared some tips to keep your pup happy and healthy during your trip to the ocean.

What are the dangers of your pooch consuming seawater?

“Seawater contains a high balance of salt, approximately 35 grams of salt in every 1 litre (1000 ml). If your dog drinks too much it can quickly become dehydrated, and symptoms can worsen if your dog isn’t provided with fresh drinking water.

Even if you keep a watchful eye over your furry companion during your visit to the beach, it can be challenging to tell if they have been drinking seawater whilst splashing about, taking a dip and playing fetch in the water.

The high levels of sodium chloride (salt) in the seawater can disrupt the fluid balance in your dog’s body, drawing water from the blood into your dog’s intestines. If your dog has ingested too much seawater, it can start to display the following symptoms:

• Diarrhoea

• Vomiting

• Lack of appetite

• Lethargy

• Convulsions

• Increased heart rate

• Instability, loss of coordination

• Excessive thirst or urination

• Tremors

• Seizures

If you recognise any of these signs with your pup during your trip to the beach, you need to get them to the vet as soon as possible. If left untreated they could suffer serious kidney damage, brain damage and rapid dehydration which could prove fatal.”

How you can prevent seawater poisoning?

“Dogs love the beach, but playing fetch, jumping the waves and swimming can all lead to a very thirsty dog. It’s essential when heading to the beach to bring a dog bowl and fresh water for your pup to drink (you can buy a portable water dispenser from your local pet store.)

It’s also a good idea for your dog to take a break from the sea every 15 minutes or so. Use this time to offer your dog fresh water. If they are refusing to drink, squirt or pour it directly into their mouth. Regularly drinking fresh water will help to rehydrate them.

Keep a close eye on your dog when they head down to the water and limit your beach outings with your furry friend to two hours.”

What to do if your dog drinks too much seawater?

“Saltwater consumed in small quantities is usually not harmful and may only cause diarrhoea, but drinking larger amounts can disrupt the fluid balance in your dog’s body, and high levels of salt can be fatal for your dog.”

FEATURE

“If your dog has consumed a lot of seawater, take them home and monitor them. If they are showing the signs, take them directly to an emergency vet to be observed. The vet will help to reduce the sodium levels in your dog’s blood.

Providing a relaxing and calming environment for your pup is crucial for recovery. Bring their belongings into a quiet room, one that can be easily cleaned as your dog may suffer from vomiting and diarrhoea. Give your dog small amounts of water every 30 minutes, to help their bodies replace the fluid.”

Beware of hot sand

“Sand can become extremely hot and reach dangerous temperatures during the summer months. Your dog’s sensitive paw pads could easily burn when playing in the sand. Wherever possible, keep your dog from walking on sand that’s exposed to the direct sun and monitor your pet’s paw pads for signs of burning, such as redness, blisters and swelling.

The beach is no place for your fourlegged friend when the temperature is high. Try to beat the heat and visit before 9.00am or after 6.00pm and always check the sand and ground temperature before allowing your dog to run, walk or play.”

Stop your pup from eating sand

“Sand is unavoidable when visiting the beach, and believe it or not, some dogs are known to eat sand, mostly by accident, but some pups do it purposefully. Swallowing sand is extremely dangerous for dogs as it can cause a blockage in the intestine, which is called sand impaction.

If your dog is vomiting, showing signs of constipation, has abdominal pain, reduced appetite, or is lethargic after a trip to the beach, this may indicate that a large amount of sand has been ingested. If you notice that your dog is displaying any of these symptoms, consult a veterinarian immediately. When at the beach, keep a close eye on your pup and prevent them from eating any sand and bring water to clear toys of large clumps of sand.”

Provide shade

“A fun day at the beach can turn into a disaster if you don’t take the correct precautions. For your dog, heatstroke can develop quickly, especially when shade isn’t provided. Our furry friends can’t handle the hot temperatures like us humans because they only have sweat glands in their feet and nose, which are less efficient at cooling themselves down.

Make sure you provide shade to get your dog out of the sun quickly. We recommend a pop-up beach tent, beach umbrella or a small beach canopy. If you see your dog panting and drooling excessively, and their gums have become more red than normal, they could be experiencing heatstroke. In this case, you’ll need to get out of the sun and cool your dog down.”

Bring plenty of fresh water

“Swimming and running around in the heat at the beach can lead to a very thirsty dog. When our furry friends are thirsty, they will almost drink anything and this includes seawater.

It’s essential when heading to the beach to bring a dog bowl and lots of fresh water for your pup to drink and rehydrate as often as possible.”

Pack dog friendly sun screen

“Just like us, dogs can quickly get burned from sun exposure. This is particularly common on parts of the body that are sparsely covered with hair. Sunburn can not only cause pain for your four-legged friend, but can lead to more severe health problems, such as skin cancer.

12 www.dogsnsw.org.au
Photo by Lenin Estrada from Pexels

“Dogs that typically have thin hair or light coloured coats are more vulnerable to sunburn, for example; Dalmatians, Boxers, Greyhounds, Beagles, Whippets and Bulldogs. All dog breeds are at risk of sun damage, because they all have areas on their body where there is little to no fur, including the belly, ears, the tip of the tail and nose.

Before heading to the beach, find a sunscreen that is designed to protect your pup. It’s vital that you only use formulas that have been produced for dogs they should not contain zinc oxide or para-aminobenzoic acid.”

Protect your pups from Parasites

“A day at the beach is the perfect way to get some fresh air and relax, however, as you search for the ideal location to lay down your towel, you should know you’re not just sharing the beach with fellow ocean lovers, you’ll be sharing it with some creepy parasites too.

Ticks are prevalent near beaches. They can be found in the dunes or in the grass nearby, and when our canine companions walk by and brush up against these, the ticks dislodge. Before heading on your journey, remember to pack a tick remover tool.”

Keep them safe in the water

“Your dog may be a confident swimmer, but big waves and strong tides can be hazardous. Bring along an extended leash so your pup can take a dip in the sea without going too far, and purchase a dog friendly life jacket to ensure their safety at all times.

The sea is full of hidden dangers, from sharp shells and rocks, to broken glass and washed-up rubbish. All of these items can be dangerous to your dog’s paw pads. Not only can some of the items be sharp and cut your pup, but they can also be dangerous if eaten. They can cause bacterial infections, cracked teeth or intestinal obstructions. Protect your pooch by investing in some dog-friendly beach boots and never leave them unattended in the water or on dry land.”

Keep clear of seaweed and sea creatures

“Natural objects found in the sea that wash up on the beach, such as seaweed, dead or alive creatures, might be fun to play with, but could cause serious health issues for your dog. When consumed, seaweed can be dangerous as it can cause a blockage in your dog’s intestines.

Keep a close eye on your pup and prevent them from rolling in, or eating anything that could make them ill. Some beaches have high levels of sea creatures, such as jellyfish and crabs, so be sure to keep them on a tight watch around the water area.

It’s really important as dog owners that we don’t allow our dogs to chase or disturb marine wildlife, for example, seal pups and marine birds can be prone to be disturbed by dogs. Our wild animals are just as important as our pets, so please be responsible around our wildlife.

If you’re taking a trip to the beach with your furry friend, be sure to stay alert and ensure they don’t come in contact with anything that poses a threat to them.”

What you should do if your dog is stung by a jellyfish?

“Jellyfish washed up on the beach may not look too dangerous, but the slimy sea creatures can result in a trip to the vet for your four-legged friend. While washed-up jellyfish may be dead, they still have the ability to sting.

Across the country it’s not uncommon to see jellyfish lurking in shallow water or washed up on the beachfront, with some beaches even having signs warning visitors to take care when paddling or enjoying the beach. It’s no secret that dogs love to explore every section of the beach, however, it’s extremely important to keep a close eye on them if there is a risk of jellyfish.

Their stings can be extremely painful to dogs and can result in drowsiness, vomiting and can cause them to struggle to breathe. If you spot a jellyfish, no matter what size, it’s best to put your four-legged friend on a lead and move to a different part of the beach, to prevent the risk of injury.

If your dog has been stung by a jellyfish, the first concern is to remove any stingers. This can be done by soaking the area stung in seawater to prevent any further toxins from being released by the tentacles. It’s important to never use freshwater hot or cold, as it promotes the release of neurotoxins, which cause more stinging and pain!

If you have ice available, apply for 10 to 15 minutes to reduce pain in the affected area, but don’t apply the ice or cool pack directly to the skin, wrap it in a towel or bag. Avoid letting your pup lick or scratch the affected area, as this can cause the sting to spread. When cleaning the area, make sure your towel and hands are clean, and never rub the area with sand or other rough materials. Next, let the skin and fur dry naturally whilst you ring the vet, who will advise you if any further action is needed”.

What are the signs your dog has been stung by a jellyfish?

Puppy Scammers

Sadly it has become more and more apparent over the past few months that puppy scammers are out there in large numbers scamming thousands of dollars from unsuspecting, prospective and often naive people each month.

It is understood that as soon as one scammer site is reported and shut down, another site opens.

If, or when a person contacts you please, even if you don’t have a litter or are planning to breed, please alert people to scammers and that they they need to be mindful and on guard when contacting people advertising puppies for sale. The scam sites have wonderful photos of delightful puppies and paint glowing pictures to the uninitiated, unsuspecting potential puppy owner.

Please refer people to a DOGS NSW breed club, who have members that can provide guidance and direct them to DOGS NSW accredited breeders. Tell them to ask questions, speak to people - not just send texts or emails.

It really is the buyer, not knowing any better, falling for these scams. We have an obligation as responsible dog lovers, members and breeders to guide and educate people in how to tell the difference between a scammer (who in reality is a criminal) and a real registered breeder.

Importantly, if you become aware of a scammer you can report them to: https://www.scamwatch.gov.au/report-a-scam

Smoke Free Area

Attention is drawn to DOGS NSW Regulations Part II-Show, Section 19.2(i):19.2(i) Smoking is not permitted in an area 20 metres from any ring in which an exhibition is taking place or 20 metres from any food vendor located on the showground. (10/13)

It should be noted that it is the responsibility of the Club conducting an event on these grounds to ensure that the event is conducted in accordance with DOGS NSW Regulations.

Attention Exhibitors

Members are required to ensure that when entering dogs, whether online or hard copy, that the correct name/s of the ownership of the dog is shown on the entry form.

The correct name/s is that of the registered ownership of the particular dog and should be entered exactly as shown o that membership. It should be noted that failure to enter a dog correctly is a breach of Regulations Part II-Show, Section 1.7 (ii), and any such breach would result in the dog being disqualified.

Show & Trials

The following standards apply to ALL SHOWS AND TRIALS

• One exhibit per ANKC approved entry form

Show Hotline

A Hotline has been established to assist Show Secretaries, Club Officials and any member that may need advice with problems or issues that may arise when running a dog show.

The phone number is as follows:

• John Sheppard - 0420 352 698

Please feel free to utilise this service.

• Photocopied or carbon entries are NOT acceptable

• Late or phone entries will NOT be accepted

• Payment by mail MUST be made by cheque or money orderDO NOT send cash in the mail

• Bitches in oestrum may be shown EXCEPT in obedience, or if specified on show schedule

• If a Club needs to contract a “replacement” judge they are advised to take note of DOGS NSW Regulation Part II - Show, Section 12.6 (c), which relates to an exhibitor requesting a refund

• In accordance with DOGS NSW Regulations Part II - Show, Section 20.1, “Limitation of Exhibits for Judging”, Clubs reserve the right to alter or amend judging arrangements and to substitute judges if deemed necessary under this Regulation. However this does not negate the Club’s responsibilities in accordance with Part II - Show, Section 12.6 (c).

Alaskan Malamute

History

Some naturalists think the Alaskan Malamute is a product of the early dog and domesticated wolf from centuries ago, whereas some Eskimo cultural experts and a number of Eskimo elders dismiss this idea, pointing out the anatomical differences between dog and wolf.

Archaeological evidence indicates that Alaskan Malamutes may have first been used no more than three to five hundred years ago, although they may have been used for dog-drawn sleds or as pack dogs before that time. The Alaskan Malamute is an extremely hardy breed that was recognised by the AKC in 1935.

Characteristics

The phrase ‘form follows function’ applies to the Alaskan Malamute more so than any other breed. Every feature of the Alaskan Malamute relates to its function and its survival. The shape of its head, its top line, tail carriage, coat and colour help distinguish it from other Arctic sledding breeds, such as the Siberian Husky.

Appearance

The Alaskan Malamute is a powerful and substantially built breed with a deep chest and strong, well-muscled body. The breed’s head is broad and the muzzle is bulky, only slightly diminishing in width from root to nose. Ears are triangular and erect when alerted. The Alaskan Malamute is made up of various colours: face markings are a distinguishing feature, consisting of a cap over the head, the face either all white or marked with a bar and/or mask.

Temperament

The Alaskan Malamute is a friendly, intelligent, independent dog that loves people. Because of this, it is not a guard dog, although its size and appearance makes the breed an effective visual deterrent. It is as strong-willed and determined, as it is friendly, and should have obedience training from an early age.

Health

The Alaskan Malamute’s average life span is 10 to 12 years, however, it does suffer from some health issues. These include Hip Dysplasia, Cataracts, Hypothyroidism (Thyroid), Polyneuropathy (DNA test available), Epilepsy and Bloat. Reputable breeders will test for these health issues.

DOGS NSW ۔ December 2021 17

Maintenance

The breed’s coat may be medium or long in length and consists of two textures of dense hair, the outer coat and undercoat. Double-coated breeds shed year round and routine brushing is the most important step in grooming the Alaskan Malamute.

Caution: do not shave your Alaskan Malamute in summer, as the hair that keeps the heat in, also keeps the heat out, and shaving could have long term effects. The breed usually sheds any unwanted hair in the warmer months.

‘The thick, waterproof double coat of the Alaskan Malamute is beautifully adapted to harsh Arctic life, but it requires constant upkeep. A Malamute should be brushed every day with a pin brush and metal comb, all the while checking for mats, which can harbor fungus and hot spots, which can become infected. Twice a year, during shedding season, an undercoat rake should be added to the regimen. Show Malamutes are often bathed weekly, but a pet Malamute can go six to eight weeks between baths. Conditioner can be used, in moderation, if the coat feels dry. As with all breeds, the Malamute’s nails should be trimmed regularly.’ 1.

Suitability

For those people looking for a dog with a lovable nature and outgoing personality, the Alaskan Malamute offers a lifetime of fun. The breed will insist on having a part in all family activities, as it is a very pack-oriented breed and therefore does best when included in the family.

With this in mind, the Alaskan Malamute generally isn’t a ‘one man’ dog. It is an extremely intelligent breed that can be very stubborn and easily bored, so it is not typically recommended for a first-time dog owner.

‘While the Malamute was not bred for racing, he was bred to work. A strong, athletic dog with tremendous endurance, designed to carry heavy loads, a Mal requires daily exercise. Romping in a well-fenced yard or other enclosed space will suffice, but Malamutes also enjoy hiking, running, and swimming with their owners. And should the owner have sufficient time and interest, Malamutes often take part in agility and obedience trials, weight-pulling competitions, backpacking, recreational or competitive sledding, and skijoring (pulling a person who is on skis).’ 1.

How to Stop your dog from Barking

PART

- Reprinted with permission

Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance

Perhaps a more realistic question is, “How to reduce the incidence, intensity and duration of barking?”. Ideally, in most cases barking should serve to get the dog’s intended message across, then cease. Because there are so many possible underlying reasons for the barking, there is no one simple solution to reduce barking behaviour. Getting your dog to bark less will take time, patience, effort and consistency. Sometimes, your best efforts may not produce the desired result and you may need to engage professional help.

• Identify why your dog is barking?

What event occurred immediately before the barking began? As we’ve seen, in many situations barking is a common canine response to a stimulus the doorbell ringing, the owner leaving, meeting another dog in the park, a loud noise. Be aware that sometimes, the stimulus is so strong that it would be really difficult or even impossible to stop the barking entirely. This is particularly the case in breeds in which barking encouraged over hundreds of years as part of the job they were bred to do.

If no identifiable stimulus appears to precede the barking, could it be a response to being left alone outside, boredom, or lack of stimulation? Or perhaps the dog is responding to another emotion such as fear or anxiety (these may be trickier to identify without professional advice). Or is the dog seeking your attention is he trying to tell you that he is hungry, cold, or wanting to go for a walk?

Dogs don’t really bark for no reason, so even if you cannot determine the cause, it is likely there is one that you are just not aware of. For example, noise sensitivity can be a trigger for barking, or you may have a possum in the attic that you are unaware of, but the dog is and alert barks to try to tell you.

• Interpret what your dog is “saying”

What is your dog is trying to communicate to another dog or person, or to you, his human pack leader? When your dog vocalises with barks, growls, yips and yelps, he is sending out different messages that could be happy, fearful, demanding, angry or questioning.

Try to become familiar with your dog’s range of barks, as well as their pitches and frequencies, because this knowledge can help you to decode the message he is trying to convey. For example, his panicked bark will sound different to his bored bark, which will sound different to his greeting bark. Try to recognise the difference between the excited ‘yipping,’ when you get the lead out, the warning bark when the doorbell rings, and the nervous bark when he sees someone unfamiliar (if you need help, search videos and audio files of different barks for a general idea, for example, see reference.1.

If you can correctly identify the underlying message, you may well be on track to reducing your dog’s excessive barking. After all, if you understand what he is trying to say and respond appropriately (read on for more on this), he should no longer need to keep on repeating the message.

• Recognise your usual response to your dog’s barking

How do you typically react when your dog barks and barks? Owners may react in ways that are not helpful or even cause or worsen the barking. For example, in attempting to calm their dog down, many well-meaning owners give attention, play, food or affection to the barking dog, thereby inadvertently rewarding and encouraging the undesirable behaviour.

of

Or owners will cuddle their dog, who is barking as a result of fear, for example from a thunderstorm. However, cuddling alone when a dog is barking out of fear is quite unlikely to resolve the fear in the long-term. A behaviour modification program that teaches coping skills and reduces anxiety and fear is required to aid with that. Try to ensure that your dog’s barking is not being rewarded inadvertently by your response.

Even an unpleasant reaction to an unwanted behaviour also will often encourage, rather than deter, that behaviour. In the mind of a dog barking for attention, being yelled at is attention, which is better than no attention at all. No matter how irritated you are, refrain from responding with shouting or punishment. It is essential that you remain calm and assertive. If you get angry or impatient, this may just ramp up your dog’s energy and make barking more of a problem.

Most behaviours a dog will engage in are an attempt to better their situation. This means that if you want an unwanted behaviour to stop, then that particular behaviour cannot have any success. Therefore, attention barking cannot lead to any kind of attention from you. Barking out of boredom is also a self-rewarding behaviour, meaning the dog gets re-enforced just by doing the behaviour. So, to stop the reinforcement you would need to think about ways to not have the dog start barking in the first place.

• How training & behaviour modification can help

In many cases, barking behaviours are often inadvertently reinforced by owners, in the attempt of trying to quieten down their dogs. The rule of thumb here is to reinforce the behaviours you like to see more of and not have the unwanted behaviours lead to success.

Just a few examples:

• If your dog barks for attention, you want to make sure you reward him with said attention when he quietly sits in front of you or lies at your feet, and not when he is barking.

• If your dog barks in the backyard because he is bored, you may provide toys and activities that relief the boredom, so he won’t feel the need to bark.

• If your dog barks because he wants you to come back to him, you may want to wait until he is quiet before you return.

• If your dog barks because he is overexcited and frustrated on the leash because he cannot say hi to the dog just 2 metres away from you, you may want to teach him to rather focus on you for an equal reward than on the dog.

TIP if you are worried you may upset your neighbours during the process of reducing your dog’s excessive barking behaviours, perhaps leave them some chocolate and/or wine and a friendly note letting them know that you are in the process of training and that for a short period of time behaviours may get a little worse, but you are on top of it working towards a more quiet future.

If your dog is barking because of fear related behaviours, techniques like counter conditioning and desensitisation can assist with overcoming the fear. A qualified dog trainer and behaviourist can help you to identify and implement the best strategy for your dog.

Desensitisation can also be a very helpful technique when dealing with barking related to noise sensitivity e.g. like barking of other dogs, the doorbell, neighbours walking past or plane noises being a trigger for your dog.

• Increase exercise and interactive play

Is your dog getting enough exercise, training and play time? Providing lots of physical and mental stimulation is an essential component in treating many canine behaviour problems, especially those driven by anxiety.

DOGS NSW ۔ December 2021 21 FEATURE

Of course, if your dog is suffering from boredom and lack of stimulation, it is also critical to provide him with more opportunities for training, play and exercise, as well as giving him tasks to do and commands to learn. These activities decrease stress, provide the physical and mental stimulation that your dog needs and burn up excess energy that he would otherwise direct towards continuous barking.

Excessive barking is often the result of pent-up energy. Increasing your dog’s physical, as well as mental activity, can work wonders in releasing that energy in more productive ways. If he’s not already, make sure that your dog receives a daily walk or two. If he is getting a daily walk, try to make the walk more challenging by extending the duration, changing routes every few days, visiting new places, changing the pace multiple times during the walk or including some hills in your route. If you usually walk him in the evening, introduce a morning session as well this could make a huge difference if he’s spending most of the day alone at home. Taking your dog on more stimulating walks and outings before you leave will burn off some of his excess energy and leave him in a calmer state. Adding some obedience training or urban agility to the walk will ensure your dog’s walk isn’t just physically but also mentally challenging.

Providing him with more mental challenges, such as agility training, obedience games or a dog sport, can also be extremely beneficial in enriching his life and decreasing stress and pent-up energy. When you go out, leave him with something challenging to do, like a favourite chew toy or a “find the treat” toy that will keep him engaged for a while. When you are home, play fun, interactive games with him, like tug-of-war, hide-and-seek or fetch, and take him to new and interesting places, such as dog parks, plus beaches and nature parks which allow dogs.

• Modify the home environment

Is there something you can alter or implement in your home that might help? Where excessive alert barking or territorial barking is causing a problem, sometimes the home environment can be modified so that the dog is kept away from the stimuli, particularly sights and sounds, that are causing his barking.

Some potential modifications include:

• Leaving the dog in a crate (read more on next page), or a room away from doors and windows.

• Covering windows with curtains, blinds, or reflective films to obscure his view of people and animals outside.

• Masking or muting the sounds that stimulate barking by using music or TV for background noise, or white noise devices.

• Installing privacy fencing for dogs outdoors.

• Installing motion sensor devices to discourage cats and other animals from entering the yard.

• Keeping dogs indoors that bark when left alone outdoors, except when the owner is outside to supervise.

• Removing doggy doors if the dog barks outside and has constant uncontrolled access to the outside.

• Consult a professional

Have all your efforts failed to curb your dog’s excessive barking? You may need to consult with an expert in canine behaviour and problem barking. Depending on the underlying cause of the barking, in most cases a professional and qualified dog trainer and behaviourist will be able to help. In extreme cases a veterinary behaviourist should be consulted.

A qualified canine trainer and behaviourist in most cases is a great first point of contact in order to asses why your dog is barking and define a strategy to alter his behaviour. This professional may also ask for medical records, like tests undertaken by your vet, since underlying medical conditions can result in your dog’s change of behaviours.

In many cases barking issues can be resolved with the implementation of a behaviour modification plan, consistent training and potential changes to the environment and routines, however, in extreme cases where medical intervention like medication is required, a veterinary behaviourist should be consulted.

Be aware that in Australia, there is no governing body to regulate who can call themselves a dog trainer or behaviourist. Whilst there are different member bodies and qualifications, it often does not say much about the quality of the individual professional. If possible, obtain a referral from your vet or other dog owners who have had similar issues. Question the trainer or behaviourist about their training, training methods and their experience with similar cases, and ask for verifiable references.

• Training techniques & tips theat may help reduce barking

There are many training techniques that may have varying degrees of success in reducing your dog’s barking. Regardless of the technique you use, keep your training sessions short, positive and upbeat and stay calm. Constant barking can be irritating, but you won’t be able to modify the behaviour if you are frustrated or get worked up yourself. In fact, your dog will mirror your energy. If your arousal is high, so will be your dog’s!

To be an effective trainer, you need to provide your dog guidance, be clear in your communication and consistent with your rules. You also need to put far more effort into teaching your dog what is expected than trying to stop unwanted behaviours. As a rule of thumb more than 90% of the effort should go into teaching wanted behaviours. Be calm and confident, assertive and kind, fair and respectful when training your dog. It is important that everyone in your family applies the same training methods every time your dog barks inappropriately. You can’t let your dog get away with inappropriate barking sometimes and not others.

Obedience training of the commands ‘sit’ and ‘stay’ or to “go on your bed” will help to keep greetings low-key and reduce over-excited barking. The dog first needs to learn these commands when there aren’t people at the door, so that he is familiar with the expected behaviour before you ask him to ‘sit’ and ‘stay’ or “go and stay on your bed” until released in the excitement of actual visitors arriving or family members returning.

Crate training or creating a quiet and safe space for the dog to go to, can be helpful for some dogs. If he learns to associate the crate with calm and relaxation, it can help in cases of separation anxiety. Unfortunately, if the crate was not conditioned well as a safe place of tranquillity and relaxation, crating your dog can increase their stress and anxiety when left alone. Another option is to confine him to one room behind a baby gate.

Sound desensitisation is a technique that can help reduce barking triggered by noises in the environment, such as thunder, traffic and other animals. There are plenty of apps available for smartphones that can help with this, for example, Sound Proof Puppy App. This technique can be used for adult dogs, but best results can be attained if started early.

Rewards-based training can be used to modify attention-seeking barking. This technique entails ignoring the dog completely when he barks or makes any noise not even looking at him. As soon as he stops barking, his silence is rewarded with affection and a treat. Once he understands that his silence is being rewarded, the duration of the silence is increased to between 2 to 3 minutes before the reward is given. Variability is often key to the success of this technique; if rewards become too predictable, training is likely to fail.

Teach alternatives to barking by providing your dog with another means to tell you what he wants, other than by barking. If you don’t want him to bark to be let in or out of the house, you will need to install a doggie door or teach him to ring a bell by the door with his nose or paw. If you don’t want him to bark to get you to play with him, teach him to bring a ball or toy and sit in front of you. By giving your dog another reliable method of getting attention, he’s no longer forced to bark for attention.

Distraction with treats entails giving your dog something to keep him busy, such as chew toy stuffed with peanut butter or kibble, in situations when he would normally be barking, for example when visitors come over or when you are on the phone. When on walks, distract him from barking at other people or dogs who would normally cause him to bark, by holding a food treat in front of his nose and allowing him to nibble it before he begins to bark. Your dog should always be quiet before receiving treats, play or attention, so as not to inadvertently reward the barking.

The “Quiet” command is a bark control technique that utilises a command and a reward. Basically, if you have sufficient control and your dog responds to obedience commands, you may be able to train your dog to stop barking with a verbal command such as “Quiet”. The dog is permitted to bark briefly and is then instructed to be quiet. A reward is given as soon as the barking stops, so that the dog learns that quiet behaviour earns rewards.

DOGS NSW ۔ December 2021 23

The critical factor is to associate silence (as opposed to barking) with the reward and to progressively increase the periods for which the dog is to stay quiet e.g. 2 or 3 minutes before a reward is given.

• Prevention – How to stop a puppy from barking in the first place

Early training and socialisation are essential to manage your puppy’s barking behaviour effectively from the outset. Dogs learn how to communicate with other dogs from day one from their litter mates, their mum and any other dogs they are raised with, until they get adopted by their new family, generally around the age of 8 to 12 weeks.

Socialisation means getting your puppy accustomed and habituated to being around many different people, dogs, other animals, environments, sights and sounds from a young age, so that he is comfortable in many different situations. The more familiar he is with a stimulus, the less likely he will become anxious and bark excessively. He may still bark in unfamiliar situations, but the frequency, intensity and duration of the barking should all lessen.

Exposure to different humans at a young age is equally important for the puppy’s development. Introduce your pup properly to friends who are not a part of your household. This will help reassure him that some strangers can be trusted instead of thinking everyone’s a threat.

Attending puppy school is very beneficial as the puppy is exposed to other pups of varying breeds and sizes, learning in the process how to communicate with puppies other than their litter mates. This is critical for their social development.

Call for dogs to help continued evaluation of exciting new Anti-cancer drug

Last month during National Canine Lymphoma Awareness Month, biotech company PharmAust Ltd reminded pet lovers to regularly inspect their dog for lumps or bumps, as it put the call out for more pet dogs to help evaluate an interesting new anti-cancer drug shown to be safe and effective in Phase 1 and advanced Phase 2 clinical trials.

The ongoing Phase 2 trial for the drug monepantel (MPL) is finalising dose optimisation and is a prelude to a multi-institutional canine cancer Phase 3 trial to start early next year. The trial’s principal investigator Dr Kim Agnew is leading a team of highly qualified veterinary oncologists in New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia who are evaluating MPL in dogs that have been newly diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma and have not started any treatment.

Cancer is the number one cause of death in dogs over the age of two years. Lymphoma is one of the more common cancers in dogs and occurs in the white blood cells of the immune system. Symptoms can include tumours, lethargy, weight loss and loss of appetite.

“The key to a good prognosis with canine lymphoma is early diagnosis and this particular form of cancer is very rapidly progressive, so it’s important to act quickly,” said Dr Agnew.

MPL shown to be a safe and effective cancer treatment

MPL is already approved for veterinary use for a different indication and species. PharmAust is aiming to repurpose MPL as a safe and effective cancer treatment.

“During the trials to date, over 25 pet dogs have been treated with MPL for lymphoma and the results are very promising,” said Dr Agnew. “So far, we have shown that the new MPL tablet is very palatable and easy for pet owners to administer at home. Furthermore, at the recently identified optimal drug blood levels, side effects seem to be very minimal and all pet dogs that have maintained these levels over the course of treatment, have been assessed as at least stable disease by the administering veterinarians. Some pet dogs have continued after the trial on a combination of this optimum level of MPL and prednisolone, and all have exceeded the life expectancy of dogs that might be administered only prednisolone at diagnosis.”

PharmAust was pleased to successfully meet its predetermined interim goals demonstrating both significant objective clinical benefit and significant overall response rate. It is now inviting more dogs with treatment naïve lymphoma to help complete the final optimisation of the Phase 2 trial in a bridging program before moving into the Phase 3 trial.

“PharmAust’s long term strategy is to develop MPL to treat cancer in both dogs and humans,” said Dr Richard Mollard, CSO of PharmAust and CEO of PharmAust’s wholly owned subsidiary Pitney Pharmaceuticals Pty Ltd.

“In pet dogs with treatment naïve B-cell lymphoma and in humans with treatment refractory cancer, Monepantel displays strong evidence of anti-cancer activity in its own right. However, and perhaps more interestingly, following our retrospective analysis of trial data in combination with prednisolone Monepantel appears capable of doubling the life expectancy of pet dogs with B-cell lymphoma compared to if treated with just prednisolone alone. We now plan to formally test this hypothesis in the Phase 3 clinical trial. Most importantly, all dogs also appear to enjoy a high quality of life while taking Monepantel, with reports of trial participants enjoying camping and playing at the park and at the beach with their owners.”

Program entry criteria

The canine entry criteria for MPL Clinical Trials can be found here and include:

• Any stage lymphoma (based upon physical exam, abdominal ultrasound and thoracic Xray)

• Substage a (feeling well)

• Immunophenotype can be pending, but needs to be B-cell based on clinical characteristics

• No previous treatment, including corticosteroids (prednisolone)

• No other significant concurrent medical problems

• Good quality of life.

The MPL program currently involves three consultations at the clinical trial sites (admission, at two weeks and at four weeks). These clinical trial sites are also listed here. Owners need to transport their dogs to and from the trial sites for these three consultations. PharmAust will cover all trial costs, including for pet owners located at some distance to the trial sites, travel expenses as well as overnight hotel stay if needed.

Can dogs eat fruit?

When you think of a healthy diet, you probably imagine one packed with fresh fruit. That might be a winner for us, but it’s not quite the same for our dogs.

So can dogs eat fruit? Well, fruit isn’t off the menu altogether; packed with vitamins, antioxidants and fibre, it can be a great snack option for our four-legged friends. But it’s also high in sugar, so moderation is crucial for long term weight control.

Plus, some fruits can upset your dog’s digestive system, or worse, so it’s important to know your stuff before you stock up the fruit bowl.

What fruit can dogs eat?

When prepared the right way, some fruits can be a tasty, healthy snack for dogs. Fruit dogs can eat include:

Apples - High in fibre and low in fat, apples make a delicious doggy snack, however, only serve the skin and flesh as apple pips contain traces of cyanide, a substance that’s toxic to dogs (and humans but we’re big enough to tolerate the amount in an apple pip or two).

Bananas Bananas cram a lot of nutrition into a small dog-friendly package. They’re full of potassium, fibre, beta-carotene, vitamins C and E, lutein and selenium. Always remove the peel and serve in moderation to avoid giving your dog too much sugar.

Blueberries, Blackberries and Raspberries High in vitamins C, E and K, and packed with antioxidants like anthocyanin, berries are great nutritional all-rounders. Blueberries contain good levels of B vitamins like folate and B6 too, while blackberries are a great source of potassium and magnesium. Meanwhile, raspberries are sweet, without being too calorific great for dogs on a weight management diet.

Strawberries These Wimbledon favourites are full of health-boosting antioxidants. But strawberries are also higher in sugar than other berries, so it’s important to serve them in small amounts. Fresh and frozen are the same nutritionally, so see what your dog prefers.

Pears Full of vitamin C and packed with fibre, pears are another safe snack option. But, as with apples, it’s important to remove the cyanide-carrying pips before putting a pear anywhere near your dog’s bowl.

Tomatoes Tomatoes are refreshing and full of vitamins and are safe to serve in moderation, but it’s important to wait until they’re fully ripe, as tomatoes contain low levels of solanine, a poisonous compound that can affect the digestive and nervous system. The levels of toxin decline as the fruit ripens.

Apricots, Peaches and Plums

These squishy summer fruits are fine to give your dog, but the stone is poisonous, so never serve them whole. All three are bursting with antioxidants, like chlorogenic acid and are rich in vitamins C,E,K, as well as B vitamins and potassium.

Which fruits are harmful to dogs?

While lots of fruit can play a part in a healthy dog diet, others are a complete no-go. Fruits you shouldn’t feed your dog include:

Citrus fruits Oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit are all worth avoiding. The citrus extract is extracted for its antioxidant properties. Therefore, it lacks the essential oils and the Psoralen (toxic compound), which means that it can be used in the food without negatively impacting the dog and being added in a very small quantity. The whole citrus fruit can cause some digestive upset if fed in large amounts.

Grapes, raisins and currants Nobody knows quite why these fruits are so dangerous for dogs. The leading theory is that they can contain traces of a mould that’s toxic to dogs. Whatever the cause, they’ve been linked to symptoms as severe as kidney failure, so they’re definitely best avoided.

Other dried fruit When fruit is dried, the sugars get concentrated, making dried fruits like dates, figs, and apricots too high in sugar for dogs. The fresh versions are mostly OK, except grapes, which are harmful to dogs however they’re prepared.

Hedgerow berries While some berries are nutrient-packed and safe for dogs, a lot of the ones you’ll see on your summer walks are far less friendly. Rowan, holly, juniper and elderberries are all harmful or poisonous, so if you see your dog making a beeline for a berry-dotted hedge, intervene.

How can I introduce fruit into my dog’s diet?

As with any food you introduce to your dog, slow and steady is the best approach. Top tips for adding fruit to your dog’s diet include:

1. Make sure it’s dog-friendly

Before giving a new fruit to your four-legged friend, it’s a good idea to double-check it’s on the list of foods dogs can eat. There are lots of exceptions and serving points to remember, so even if you think you know, it’s always worth another look.

2. Check for mould

Only let your dog eat fruit that’s fresh mouldy fruit is as bad for dogs, as it is for us. If you have fruit trees, keep your dog away at harvest time, so they don’t accidentally eat any spoilt or infested fruit that’s fallen on the ground.

3. Prepare it carefully

Thoroughly wash or remove the peel from any fruit you’ll be giving your dog, just as you would if you were eating it yourself.

4. Introduce it gradually

Even if food is safe to give your dog, serving a bowlful straight away can lead to an upset stomach. To avoid any unpleasant reactions, give your dog a small piece to try, then increase to a snack-size amount over time.

5. Serve in moderation

Fruit can be good for your dog in small quantities, but serving too much can have the opposite effect. Be especially careful with high-sugar fruits like strawberries and bananas.
