Dear Members,

On Saturday 6 May 2023, Senior Vice President Christina Rafton and I attended Government House Sydney for the Ceremonial Tree Planting and Garden Reception to mark the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III. The Honourable Margaret Beasley ACKC, Governor of New South Wales extended an invitation to represent the membership in her capacity as Patron of DOGS NSW and also, significantly, that the Royal New South Wales Canine Council trading as DOGS NSW enjoys “Royal Patronage”. Sydney turned on a most stunning autumn day for this historically significant occasion. The garden reception was hosted by the Lieutenant-Governor, the Honourable Andrew Bell, included invited guests from various charitable organisations and featured the ceremonial tree planting of a melaleuca sapling, grown from a cutting of the tree planted at Government House by Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during her 1954 visit to Australia.

For those travelling interstate, please be aware that Canine Ehrlichiosis is a fatal tick-borne disease in dogs and it is on the move. This disease has been travelling across northern Australia and is now reasonably widespread in far North Queensland. Cases are spreading from Mount Isa across to Townsville and moving south. The disease is considered to be endemic throughout the Northern Territory. It is a particularly nasty bacterial disease, transferred by infected tick bites that affects the immune and blood systems. Ticks, primarily the brown tick, transmit the disease. Tick prevention (so that the ticks are repelled) is the best method of preventing the spread of the disease. Movement of dogs, especially those that are not treated properly to prevent ticks from attaching, is the main method of spread. Anyone considering travelling into Queensland, or any northern areas of Australia with their dogs, must be aware of the risks and have all their dogs on preventatives and collars (Serresto are the preferred collars) to repel ticks and must be vigilant about checking for ticks regularly. Avoid bush areas and coastal parks where there are higher concentrations of ticks. Ticks climb to the top of long grass and low bushes waiting for a meal to brush past them and are less likely to be found on closely mown grass and very cleared areas.

The Royal NSW Canine Council Health & Welfare Charity Ltd has been working to assist in slowing the spread of the disease by funding programs to educate those in Aboriginal Communities that are affected on preventatives as their dogs, if untreated, are the major vectors of the spread of the disease. However, we all need to be very aware of this disease and its fatal consequences if it arrives in heavily populated areas.

Dogs on Show is back for 2023! Our annual Open Day show, ‘Dogs on Show’, is fast approaching on Saturday 17 June and I would like to encourage as many Breed Clubs and also Kennel Clubs to take part. Dogs on Show is a great opportunity to talk to the public about your breed and dog sports and this also raises the profile of DOGS NSW in the community. This is a great opportunity to educate the public as to who DOGS NSW is and our Pedigree Dogs, registered responsible breeders and great, fun, dog sports. Those members who would like to promote their breed and who are not part of a dog club are also welcome to take up a free stand at the event.

Editor's message

After a four year break, due to COVID restrictions, the 2022 DOGS NSW Show Dog of the Year took place on Saturday evening, 22 April 2023 with a ‘Captain’s Table’ theme. The night was a much-anticipated event with finalist judges Mr Shane Thomas (QLD), Mrs Julie Keenan (VIC) and Mr John Palmer (NSW) officiating. The event was hosted by DOGS NSW Public Relations Committee and coverage of the event is featured on pages 9-11.

Taking care of your dog’s dental hygiene is important to prevent various dental problems like bad breath, tooth decay and periodontal disease. Several things can go wrong in your dog’s mouth causing various dental issues and diseases, however, prevention is always better than a cure and taking your dog to the vet for an annual check and dental clean (if required) is one sure way of preventing major dental problems. There are always other ways to help with dental hygiene and the article, commencing on page 23, discusses these options.

Dr Helen Nicholson and Emma Duffy from Whole Family Health discuss the many benefits of Canine Conditioning, which is essentially a fitness program or a series of exercises that improves global strength, flexibility, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, coordination and efficiency of movement. This is a program for healthy dogs which can be altered in levels of fitness to suit your dog’s age and capabilities. To read more about the benefits of canine conditioning and to try the three basic exercises, please turn to page 13.

The Canine Hero Awards were presented by the Royal Agricultural Society on General Specials Day at the 2023 Advance™ Sydney Royal Dog Show to a most deserving Service Dog and Companion Dog. On page 28 we have profiled the dog who took the title of Companion Canine Hero, Labrador Retriever ‘Monty’ Tapua The Full Monty, who was bred by DOGS NSW breeder Pauline Gill and now owned by Kristy Milligan. Monty and Kristy’s story highlights the need for more wonderful companion dogs in the community so please read their story.

The spotlight feature for this month is the iconic and much-loved Collie. A gentle, long and short-coated breed, the Collie is wellknown for its loyalty, affection, intelligence, gentle temperament and protective abilities. When visiting her Scottish estate at Balmoral, Queen Victoria became entranced with the breed and took some Collies back with her to Windsor Castle. Known at that time as the Scottish Sheepdog, the Collie first entered the show-ring at the Birmingham Dog Society Show and was soon highly sought after. America followed suit by 1878 and, in the 1940s, the breed’s fame and popularity shot to great heights when a Collie (Rough) was chosen to star as ‘Lassie’ the iconic movie and television series. The Collie is a wonderful, family dog that requires companionship and daily exercise to thrive. The spotlight breed feature commences on page 18.

DOGS NSW Show Dog - Neuter and Puppy of the Year Show was held on Saturday evening, 22 April 2023.

The weather was kind and we had a wonderful judging panel representing three states of Australia. I sincerely thank all of our Judges for attending and conducting the night in a very professional manner.

The night was a sparkle of contestants dressing in the ‘Captain’s Table - Dress to Impress’ theme and a very enjoyable Spit Roast Dinner was also available.

Thanks to Chief Steward and MC Mr Tony Tau and our very experienced stewards who ensured the night ran smoothly, along with our DOGS NSW Representative Mr Stephen Oliver.

Exhibitors were impressed at the generosity of our two major sponsors Petcover and Royal Canin and we thank them for their wonderful contributions, which helped to make this such a special event.

The grounds looked magnificent for our evening event and the Grounds team had worked extra hard to have the grounds ready. Special thanks to head Groundsman Mr Chris Gedzyk, who worked tirelessly on the day as if an honorary committee member.

Committee Treasurer Dianne Wright and Secretary Susie Kearnes assisted in all administrative duties at the event and a big thank you to these ladies for their hard work. Bill McLean, our raffle seller, also did a great job.

To all the exhibitors who entered, I thank you and hope you all had a wonderful evening. The sportsmanship on the night was amazing and I’d like to congratulate all of the winners!

Canine Conditioning

Canine conditioning is essentially a fitness program for healthy dogs which improves global strength, flexibility, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, coordination and efficiency of movement. This is in contrast to canine rehabilitation which is individualised, targeted exercise that has been prescribed to strengthen, reduce pain and assist recovery from injury or surgery. However, the goals of both conditioning and rehabilitation can be similar.

A conditioning program can be used to improve the general fitness and quality of life of any dog, provided it is started at the appropriate level for your dog’s health, age, breed, exposure to exercise and current fitness. For example, the conditioning program level and pace for a 9-year-old sedentary pet Dachshund will be very different to the program for a 2-year-old Kelpie who is on a flyball team.

We’re excited to see how many people have taken conditioning seriously since we first ran courses around 10 years ago, so this article is foundation-level for those new to the concept. Next month’s article will have more advanced exercises for those who have already done conditioning. Keep in mind, though, that even seasoned dogs can sneak in little cheats over time, so you might want to check your dog’s form with these “back to basics” exercises.

What are the benefits of conditioning for a dog?

• Increases cardiovascular fitness.

• Increases stamina and endurance for physical activity.

• Improves muscle function for smooth effective movement and to support the joints.

• Improves health of the joints e.g. lubricates cartilage & prevents stiffness.

• Is a source of enrichment (learning, stimulation & enjoyment).

• Stimulates the brain to coordinate movements in the correct pattern.

• Keeps muscles, tendons, bones, ligaments, joint surfaces, nerves & fascia healthy.

• Decreases anxiety & promotes a calm feeling.

• Improves mood by stimulating endorphins.

• Increases reaction times e.g. being able to turn quickly to avoid unexpected obstacles.

• Promotes healthy restorative sleep.

• Teaches the muscles surrounding the spine to work effectively at supporting it & providing a good solid foundation for other movements to occur.

• Maintaining a healthy weight, which in turn prevents osteoarthritis developing & prolongs life.

• Improves your bond with your dog.

• If your dog is a working breed or a sporting dog, conditioning can significantly improve their stamina, performance and reduce their risk of injury.

Which dogs can benefit?

Any healthy dog can participate, with variations made for the breed, age, motivation and current and future activity levels. We always use force-free methods in our Physiotherapy practice, which means finding a way to motivate the dog towards something they want or enjoy. It helps a great deal to encourage your dog to perform the exercises using something they love, such as food, a ball or toy. If using food, ensure you take any treats out of their daily food allowance so you’re not over feeding them. If they’re not particularly treat-orientated, you can try doing the exercises just before mealtimes, using small parts of their meal to tempt them.

When we say “any healthy dog”, we mean a dog that is bright, eating and drinking normally, toileting normally, is currently sound and is not recovering from surgery or acute illness. If you are unsure if your dog should or can do the following exercises, please see your veterinarian first and ask their opinion.

Which dogs can benefit?

A note about senior dogs. Older dogs can vary greatly in their ability and willingness to exercise and it can really give some of them a second wind! So, if they’re healthy and willing, give it a try. If they aren’t enjoying it or are finding it difficult, don’t keep pushing them. It’s worth asking the Vet to check them over, in case there’s a physical reason for this.

How often should I do the conditioning exercises?

Core Principles:

1. None of these exercises should hurt your dog at all. Ever. The “keep pushing” mindset we humans have when trying to improve our fitness does not apply to dogs.

2. Never force your dog into doing an exercise or into a particular position. If they aren’t doing the exercise asked of them, let them take a few seconds, “reload” and try again. If it’s not working:

• Try a different way of asking / showing the dog what we’d like them to do.

• There may be a legitimate reason for refusing the exercise such as weakness, stiffness, a feeling of instability or pain. Always bear this in mind.

• They may be fatigued. This can happen surprisingly quickly.

• They’re not motivated by your “reward”! Try a higher-value reward.

3. Start low and slow with 2-3 different exercises, once a day, for 5-6 days a week.

4. The number of repetitions needed is decided by how many times the dog can repeat the exercise before they start losing form, i.e. not performing the exercise correctly. This could only be 2 repetitions, or it could be 20. Repeating an exercise that is being done incorrectly can cause injury, put strain on other parts of the body and reinforce unwanted movement patterns. Quality is always better than quantity.

5. Don’t increase the complexity or difficulty of an exercise until they’ve mastered the current level. This means doing 20 repetitions correctly with no loss of form.

6. If your dog just isn’t getting it, move on to a different exercise. Don’t get frustrated with them - it’s meant to be fun for your both! You can try again another day.

7. If your dog consistently has issues performing an exercise or getting into/holding a particular position, there’s likely an issue that needs investigating by your Vet and/or Physio. Avoid doing this particular exercise if this is the case.

Want to try some?

Here are some foundation-level exercises to try, which are useful if you haven’t done any conditioning with your dog before. However, seasoned dogs should also give these a try as they can sneak in little cheats over time so there’s no harm going back to basics to check they’re not losing form.

This is what you’ll need to complete all the following exercises, plus some treats!

Purpose-made Equipment: Substitute if you don’t have this equipment:

Fitness foam balance pad (TPE foam).

Size usually 50cm x 40cm x 6cm.

Cavalette poles set at hock height.

An adjustable height training platform.

A thin cushion wide enough for your dog to stand with 2 front paws on it.

4 broom handles or garden sticks of similar length, propped on top of something that raises them to your dog’s ankle height.

A low step, kitchen stool, or for large/giant breeds, a dining chair with a firm, non-slip surface on it.

Sport balance disc / air cushion. Balance discs can be purchased cheaply from large budgetbrand shops.

Exercise 1a:

This is a good screener for your dog; if your dog can’t hold this on flat ground for 2 minutes, do not progress - see your vet and/or physio.

THE STACK & 2 MINUTE HOLD (see photo on page 13)

A stack is the position that you see show dogs in: standing tall, proud, head up looking forward, with feet parallel, back straight and their hocks vertical (see photo).

• Use a treat or target to get them to hold this position as long as possible.

• If dogs are having trouble with this, they often step forward with 1 leg or sit down. Let them have a break for a minute or two, then try again. Note how long they’re able to hold it before they do this.

• When they can hold for 2 minutes, progress to exercise 2.

Exercise 1b:

THE STACK WITH FRONT PAWS ON FOAM PAD/ CUSHION & HOLD (see image right)

• As above however stand their front paws on a fitness foam pad, foam cushion or balance/wobble disc if they already have a basic level of fitness.

• Aim to hold for 2 minutes.

The next two exercises can be done even if your dog hasn’t yet progressed to 1b.

Exercise 2:

OBSTACLES (see image bottom right)

• Slowly walk your dog over 4 poles across their path. Poles should be the length of your dog’s body apart, placed equally.

• 1 lap is over the 4 poles and back again to the start position.

• The goal is for them to step over the 4 poles cleanly without knocking them. When they can do this for 5 laps, they can progress to the more advanced exercise in next month’s edition.

Exercise 3:

DROP TO STAND (see image below)

• Get your dog to ‘drop’ (or lie down) with their front feet on a foam pad/wobble cushion and their back feet on a yoga mat.

• Simulating the angle that your dog needs to jump, stretch a treat in front of your dog so they go from ‘drop’ to standing.

• You want your dog to look a bit like Superman going ‘up, up & away’.

• Make sure the stand position is a stretch forward position, with their back flat and a straight line from nose to tail.

• Repeat up to 30 times, stopping if your dog loses form.

• If your dog doesn’t drop/lie down, you can do this from a sitting position, ensuring their back feet stay planted to the floor the whole time – no hopping or stepping forwards.

As these are beginner exercises, next month will be Part Two, where we will have more advanced progressions for you to try. Please consult the physiotherapist if your dog is having difficulties with these exercises.

DOGS NSW Lure Coursing Working Party

The DOGS NSW Lure Coursing Working Party will be holding a presentation and review of their proposed submission to the Review of the Rules for the Conduct of Lure Coursing Sanctioned Events.

2023 Lure Coursing Judges Training Scheme

To be eligible to apply to enter a lure coursing Judges’ aspirant training program a prospective candidate must –

1. Be a member of a Dogs Australia Member Body for at least 3 years prior to the application; be a current financial member of a Dogs Australia Member Body; and, be in good standing.

2. Be 18 years of age or older.

3. Make written application to the Dogs Australia Member Body of their desire to be an approved Judge.

4. Prior to 1 January 2030, have coursed and titled a dog to Junior Courser (JC), and in the opinion of the Dogs Australia Member Body have completed necessary participation in the running of Dogs Australia sanctioned events. From 1 January 2030 must have personally coursed and titled a dog to a Senior Courser (SC) or a Coursing Ability (CA) title.

Distinguished Service and Life Membership Awards

These awards exist to recognise the valuable contribution of individuals to the current and future existence of the organisation. In particular, the Awards System, described below, is intended to recognise a wide range of factors, more than simply by being a long-term Member. It also seeks to create awards so that significant contributions to DOGS NSW may be recognised appropriately.

The two Awards available to Members are:

1. Distinguished Service Award

2. Honorary Life Membership

The award of Life Membership is the highest honour that DOGS NSW can bestow on an individual. It is conferred on those who have made an exceptional contribution to the existence and advancement of the organisation. The aim is to make life membership hard to obtain so that it is respected by members and valued by recipients

PROCEDURE

Members wishing to nominate a fellow Member for either Award may apply to the Office for the appropriate Nomination Form.

Each form must be completed by two Members, in good standing and lodged with the Office prior to the advertised closing date for nominations.

All nominations are to be treated in the strictest confidence.

Nominations will be referred to the Honours Working Party for due consideration to be followed by the Working Party’s recommendations to the Board of Directors.

AWARD CRITERIA

1. Distinguished Service Award

The Nominee is to be a continuous financial member of DOGS NSW for a minimum period of 15 years.

The Nominee must have served the dog world in an effective and meaningful way; such as Member of an Affiliate, a Committee Member, a Steward, an Event Organiser and any of the other many contributing roles which require a considerable degree of personal endeavour, involvement and dedication.

2. Honorary Life Membership

The Nominee is to be a continuous financial member of DOGS NSW for a minimum period of 25 years.

The Nominee must have demonstrated significant, sustained and high quality service enhancing the reputation and future of the overall organisation particularly to the administration, development and promotion of the canine world.

Exceptional Criteria

Should a member lack the membership precondition, but it can be demonstrated that the member has provided outstanding and meritorious services to DOGS NSW, then a nomination may well be warranted.

NOTE:

The members of the Honours Working Party are of the view that should a nomination not be successful, further nominations for that nominee should not be considered for a minimum period of three years.

TIMETABLE - NOMINATION FOR ELECTIONS

BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2023

At the 2023 Annual General Meeting of RNSWCC Ltd, five (5) members of the Board of Directors will retire by rotation pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution of RNSWCC Ltd. Accordingly, the Board has resolved to call for nominations to fill the said vacancies.

The successful nominees shall each be elected for a term commencing at the conclusion of the 2023 Annual General Meeting of RNSWCC Ltd and expiring at the conclusion of the first Annual General Meeting held more than 30 months thereafter.

These five (5) positions are to be elected from the following Regions:-

Two (2) representatives from the Metropolitan Region

One (1) representative from the Hunter Region

One (1) representative from the Illawarra & South Eastern Region

One (1) representative from the Western Region

Retiring Directors are eligible to nominate for these positions provided that they continue to comply with the requirements set out in the following paragraph.

Members seeking election will be required to reside in the Region for which they seek to represent and will also be required to be full financial members of RNSWCC Ltd. It will be necessary to be nominated by two (2) full financial members of RNSWCC Ltd who also must reside in the same Region.

Nominations must include the full name, address and telephone numbers (both home and business) of the nominee and accompanied by a resume and photograph as described on the RNSWCC Ltd official nomination form.

Each full financial member of RNSWCC Ltd will be eligible to vote for the candidate/s in the Region in which they reside. Please Note: Associate, Junior Members and Affiliates of RNSWCC Ltd are not entitled to vote.

Members seeking election should also note that the Board of Directors meets at The Bill Spilstead Complex for Canine Affairs, 44 Luddenham Road, Orchard Hills, on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Each meeting commences at 2.00pm and generally concludes at 6.30pm.

NOMINEES RESUMES and photographs (if submitted) will be published in the Dogs NSW September 2023 Magazine.

BALLOT PAPERS will be inserted in the September 2023 Magazine and voting will close at 12 noon on Friday 6 October 2023 (with the count on Saturday 7 October 2023 at Orchard Hills.

• Fees must accompany a correctly completed DOGS NSW Show/Obedience Entry Form. Any entry on an Agility entry form will be returned.

• Dogs height at shoulder MUST be supplied with entry.

• Bitches in oestrum are not permitted on the grounds, bitches in whelp cannot compete.

• Open to all breeds: Main, Limited, Sporting and Associate Registers.

• Age Limitation: The test is open to dogs who have attained their second birthday on or before 13 August 2023 but who have not turned eight as at 13 August 2023.

• Pre-requisite: A veterinarian certificate, issued within 14 days immediately prior to 13 August 2023, must be submitted on the day for each dog. It shall cover such things as general fitness, temperature, standing heart rate, conditions of pads and muscle tone of dog (for bitches the certificate is also to state that the bitch is not in whelp).

• The handler must be at least twelve (12) years old at 13 August 2023.

• Helmets MUST be worn if riding a bicycle.

• Dogs will not be permitted to have their temperature lowered artificially, unless directed by a Veterinarian, and that dog will then be disqualified.

• Gates will be locked at 7.00am and will not be re-opened until after the conclusion of the test. NO access to grounds until the test is concluded.

• Handlers may jog the distance, ride a push bicycle or tricycle or one powered by battery, provided the required speed is maintained. USE OF ANY OTHER MOTORISED MECHANICAL VEHICLE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED The handler when riding must wear enclosed shoes and a helmet.

• Non competing dogs must be secured in a vehicle, dog trailer or crate while gaiting and obedience is being conducted

• Non competing dogs MUST NOT cause a distraction to competing dogs.

Collie (Rough & Smooth)

History

The Collie was originally bred to work sheep on the rugged fells of Scotland but has since undergone many subtle changes. In the past, the Smooth Collie was adept at driving cattle in the North of England, while the thick coat of the Rough Collie offered the necessary protection for working sheep on the wild Scottish hill farms and mountains.

Today’s Collie has evolved from the old-fashioned working dog into a truly magnificent specimen: a dog of great beauty, standing with impassive dignity, with no part out of proportion to the whole.

In 1881, the first breed standard was drawn up and in 1895 the Rough and Smooth Collies entered the Kennel Club’s register as fixed, registered breeds.

Over the ensuing years, breeders fixed certain characteristics, such as the coat and size; perhaps the most obvious and important changes were those made to the head shape. The Collie’s head became more elongated, lending the breed the aristocratic appearance which, along with her fascination with all things Scottish, prompted Queen Victoria’s admiration. Upon the purchase of Balmoral Castle, Queen Victoria added Collies and several other Scottish breeds to the royal kennels. Collies continued to be favoured by royalty for some time both in the UK and Russia.

Early 20th century kennels were generally owned by the very wealthy, those who were able to keep large numbers of dogs, as well as buy and sell them at very high prices. Many of these owners were also businessmen and before long, the export potential of the show Collie was recognised.

Many Collies were exported to the United States, where the breed’s best attributes were reflected in Lassie. The loyalty and adventurousness of Lassie has endeared Collies to the world; they are internationally recognised as a true family dog and ideal companion.

Appearance

The opening line of the breed standard for the Collie (Rough) sums up the breed: “The Collie should instantly appeal as a dog of great beauty, standing with impassive dignity, with no part out of proportion to the whole.”

Marked characteristics include its beautiful coat, which should fit the outline of the dog, and the clean wedge-shaped head.

The breed standard for the Collie (Smooth) states: “The Collie should instantly appeal as gifted with intelligence, alertness and activity. He should stand with dignity, and his movements governed by perfect anatomical formation, with no part out of proportion, should be smooth and graceful. He should give the appearance of a dog capable of working.”

These words should portray to both breeder and judge a mental picture of the Collie. The three recognised colours are sable and white, tricolour and blue merle. All the above may carry the typical white Collie markings to a greater or lesser degree; however the following markings are favourable: white collar, full or part white shirt, legs and feet; white tail tip. A blaze may be carried on the muzzle, or skull, or both.

SPOTLIGHT

Temperament

The Collie makes an ideal family pet and likes to be regarded as a member of the family. It is affectionate, responding to love rather than harsh discipline. It is not a dog to be left in the yard with very little human contact. The breed performs well in obedience training as it is intelligent and relishes the chance to work with its master. However, it is a sensitive dog and must be treated accordingly when training.

Health

The Collie is generally a very healthy breed. Responsible breeders are striving to eradicate Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA), which affects the breed and now that several genetically clear-eyed dogs have been identified, slow progress is being made. It should be said the majority of affected dogs live healthy lives with little or no impairment.

Hip Dysplasia is a problem to a lesser degree. Puppy buyers are advised to discuss health issues with breeders and seek out those who test their breeding stock and screen litters for CEA.

Always purchase a Collie through a registered breedersomeone who hip scores breeding dogs and eye checks puppies by a vet ophthalamologist.

Maintenance

Both Rough and Smooth Collies are double-coated. The Smooth Collie is increasing in popularity and may be better suited to those who want the Collie temperament without the grooming that is required of the Rough. But, despite what many people think, the coat of the Rough is surprisingly easy to maintain; a good brush once or twice a week will keep the pet Collie looking neat and tidy.

A rub-down with a wet flannel will help keep the breed fresh and remove surface grime, and a sprinkling of talcum powder, brushed into the coat, will act as a dry cleaning agent in between baths. However, if the Collie is to be shown, a little more coat maintenance will be required.

Despite being a medium to large breed, the Collie does not require a lot of exercise, a backyard with room for it to play in and a regular walk is all that is needed.

Suitability

Collies thrive on human company, so are well-suited to families. They are easily trained in obedience and agility without harsh discipline, to which they do not respond well. They require regular exercise, enjoying a balance between romping around outdoors and lounging around on the sofa at home.

This year marks the 80-year Anniversary of the Collie Club of NSW Inc.

In 1943, The Collie Club of NSW was established to promote Collie Roughs and Collie Smooths, support registered Breeders, assist the general public in finding registered puppies and conduct Championship Specialty Shows (which included four annual Collie Shows – one Open (April), 2 Championships (June and October) which incorporated Obedience Trials, and a parade in December).

The Collie Club of NSW continue to provide its members and the community with its original visions and has seen growth and development in providing a regular members magazine ‘Rough and Ready’. The Club uses social media outlets such as Facebook and Instagram to promote the breed and keep members informed and also showcase the Collie breed at events such as The Sydney Royal Easter Show Breed Information Day and The Dog Lovers Festival. The Club also continues to conduct two Specialty Shows per year.

On Sunday 19 November 2023, we will be celebrating the Club’s 80th Anniversary with a Specialty Show judged by Mr John Blake (UK) of Corydon Collies.

Dental Hygiene in Dogs

Dental hygiene is crucial for preventing dental diseases in dogs. Find out how to take care of your dog’s teeth at home and what to expect at the vets.

Oral hygiene is important for dogs, even though for many owners it doesn’t seem so. Their dental health is certainly related to their overall well-being, as teeth and gum problems in dogs can be caused by, or can cause other healthissues in the body.

Not only should dogs be taken to the vet at least once a year for a dental checkup but you can also take care of your dog’s dental hygiene at home in several ways.

How to Practice Dog Dental Hygiene?

Taking care of your dog’s dental hygiene is important to prevent various dental problems like bad breath, tooth decay and periodontal disease. Even though many people find it silly, brushing dogs’ teeth is one of the most effective ways to go about it.

Brushing your dog’s teeth using dog toothpaste two or three times a week will help you prevent tartar buildup and maintain good hygiene. Besides brushing, your dog will love dental chew toys that are made specifically for cleaning their teeth, so it’s not bad to get some of those.

Water additives are also helpful in reducing plaque in a dog’s mouth and are very easy to use without disturbing your dog’s routines. However, maybe the most important is to maintain overall health and provide a healthy diet to your dog, which will also preserve its teeth.

What Are Possible Dental Problems in Dogs?

Several things can go wrong in your dog’s mouth causing various dental issues and diseases:

● Tartar buildup is a very common problem but is not difficult to prevent. It appears when food residue and bacteria accumulate over time and creates a coating over a dog’s teeth. Hardened layers of tartar can harm the teeth and cause other health issues in a dog’s mouth.

● Bad breath is common in dogs, but shouldn’t be neglected as it can be a sign of dental problems. It is usually caused by bacteria in dogs’ mouths, bad dental hygiene, periodontal disease or other health issues.

● Gingivitis or the inflammation of the gums is caused by a bacterial infection, leading to swelling, redness and bleeding of the gums.

● Tooth decay is also caused by bacteria that create acid and damage tooth structure bringing pain, cavities and in the end, tooth loss.

● Periodontal disease affects dogs’ gums or the roots of their teeth. It appears due to a bacterial infection and can lead to tooth loss, or even problems with the jaw.

● Broken teeth usually occur due to trauma, weakened teeth and chewing on hard objects. Fractures cause pain and can lead to further infections.

● Malocclusion is a condition that occurs when a dog’s teeth and jaws are misaligned. That makes difficulties with chewing and eating and brings dental problems.

● Tumours can cause pain and swelling in a dog’s mouth. Depending on whether they are benign or malignant, they can bring more or less harm to a dog.

The Usual Causes of Dogs’ Dental Problems

Some causes of dental diseases can be prevented, but some are simply inevitable. If you don’t take care of your dog’s dental hygiene regularly, plaque and tartar will appear, followed by other dental problems.

You can also control what you are feeding your dog and take care to provide a healthy and balanced diet, which will maintain overall health and support dental care.

Unfortunately, there are some things you can’t do much about. Sometimes dental issues will occur because of a dog’s genetics, age, or experienced trauma and in those cases, you should pay special attention to their teeth.

How to Notice Dental Problems?

Any change in your dog’s behaviour or signs of irritation should make you check your dog’s teeth or take it to the vet.

If you notice any of the following symptoms in your dog, you are probably dealing with some kind of dental problem:

● Bad breath

● Teeth that are broken or discoloured

● Unusual drooling, chewing, or dropping food

● Swelling in the mouth

● The dog doesn’t let you touch its head

● Reduced appetite or dog doesn’t eat

Carefully examine a dog’s mouth because dental sensitivity can make animals irritable and want to bite.

Are There Dentists for Dogs?

If you ever wondered if there are dentists for dogs, the answer is - yes. Some veterinarians who specialised in dental care are professionals in diagnosing and treating dental issues in dogs and other animals.

However, most regular vets can check dogs’ teeth and provide dental services like cleaning or teeth extractions. If you believe your dog has dental problems, it is perfectly fine to visit your regular vet to find out what it is about and get the treatment.

What Does a Veterinary Dental Checkup Look Like?

When you take your dog for a dental checkup, a vet will perform an oral examination of your dog’s mouth. X-rays are often used as many dental problems can be hidden in the roots of the teeth, in the gums and in the jaw.

A dental checkup usually includes cleaning, scaling, and polishing of the dog’s teeth and it is done under anesthesia. All dentist appointments are unpleasant and for dogs, they are unbearable. That’s why general anesthesia keeps them away from feeling the stress and discomfort of it and allows the vets to complete all the necessary procedures.

Dental cleanings remove plaque and tartar and are therefore very useful for dogs. After receiving the anesthetic, the vets will closely monitor your pet during the procedure, so there is no need for worries. Further on, the vet will perform the x-rays, and continue by using an ultrasonic scaler to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth.

If the vets suspect other dental issues, they may use the chance to perform other examinations or proceed with removing certain teeth, or make repairs and fillings. After these dental procedures are completed, most dogs will be able to get back to their usual condition quickly and be ready to go home the same day.

How to Take Care of a Dog’s Teeth at Home

Prevention is always the key to avoiding health and dental problems. Cleaning your dog’s teeth removes plaque and bacteria from its mouth, prevents diseases and can postpone your visits to the vet.

There are several ways to clean your pet’s teeth and many useful dental products that can help you with this:

BRUSHING

● When to start?

It’s not a bad idea to start brushing a dog’s teeth when they are a puppy. Even if this isn’t the case, and the dog wasn’t introduced to a toothbrush that early, you need to begin gradually, while positively rewarding your dog every step of the way.

● What to use?

Make sure you use a specifically made dog toothbrush that wouldn’t hurt their mouth and special dog toothpaste that will have an appealing taste for dogs and be safe for them to swallow.

* Never use toothpaste and brushes made for humans. Although they may look similar, they are very different and could be dangerous for your dog’s health.

How to Take Care of a Dog’s Teeth at Home

● How to do it?

Teach your dog that brushing its teeth is something good and to trust you in that process. A good first step will be to make the dog rest their head in your hand or on your lap. Keep a treat in your other hand and reward the dog when it does it right.

Repeat this action a few times, and don’t hesitate to use the words ‘good’ or ‘yes’. When your dog starts to get it, repeat the action several more times but reduce the threat until you don’t have it anymore in your hand.

When the dog has learned to place its head on your palm, try touching the outer side of your dog’s lips gently, and also reward it with a treat.

By repeating this, start to extend the time you are touching the dog’s lips and slightly touch both the upper and lower jaw.

The next step is to touch the inside of its mouth by slowly sliding your fingers over the dog’s gums. Each of these new short steps should reward your dog with a treat. Take your time and practise slowly. Your dog might not like this at first, but should slowly become more and more relaxed.

After you feel your dog is comfortable with the previous step, try placing your hand gently on top of its snout. Of course, the reward follows until the dog is relaxed and allows you to briefly lift its lips.

When you pass that step, you should be able to lift both the dog’s lower and upper lip and start touching its teeth and gums without opening the dog’s mouth. This should be enough for you to start brushing your pet’s teeth.

Use the brush gently, first without applying any toothpaste, and just start brushing a few teeth circularly. Very slowly, progress towards brushing all of the teeth and reaching the gums.

The last step is to introduce your dog to the toothpaste. Let it smell and taste it first before you put it in its mouth and start brushing.

DENTAL WIPES

Another teeth-cleaning technique for dogs can be tooth wipes. They are placed on a finger and allow you to clean your dog’s teeth by rubbing them. Dental wipes will remove plaque like the brushes but are maybe not as good because they can’t clean all the little nooks and spaces between the teeth.

DOG DENTAL TREATS

Dog dental treats are a very good and easy way of caring for your pet’s teeth. Your dog will love them and they are made specifically to clean the teeth from plaque and freshen the breath.

They come in many different flavours, shapes, and sizes, so there will be plenty of options to choose from. You can even put a little bit of dog toothpaste on the treat and your pup will enjoy its teeth cleaning time while chewing on a delicious treat.

DENTAL CHEW TOYS

Dogs’ chew toys keep them entertained and mentally stimulated, while also naturally cleaning their teeth from plaque. Chewing and gnawing are dogs’ natural habits and you should use the chance and provide your pet with dental toys that it will love.

There are many different kinds of toys, made of various materials. You can look for some made of natural materials or meat, like chicken strips or bully sticks, that are very good for dogs’ dental health. Still, if you’d like something that isn’t food and contains no calories, find rubber or nylon toys for your dog.

DENTAL POWDER & WATER ADDITIVES

Dog dental powder works against the bacteria that help plaque buildup as it is a type of probiotic that will increase the healthy bacteria in a dog’s mouth. The powder is added to the dog’s food daily and will also help with breath freshening. Water additives are similar. They are added to a dog’s water bowl and help remove bacteria and decrease tartar buildup. There are different types of water additives on the market, but all of them should be tasteless and dogs won’t notice them while drinking water.

IS THERE A DIET FOR DOGS’ DENTAL HEALTH?

As mentioned before, a balanced diet containing healthy dog food is very important for overall health. Feeding your dog scraps of human food or sugary treats will surely harm your dog’s mouth and its dental health and should be completely avoided.

Besides the regular healthy diet, there are diets specifically created for dogs with some dental diseases (like a periodontal disease) by veterinary nutritionists. These kinds of foods and diets should, of course, be prescribed by a veterinarian before you give some of these formulas to your pet. This food will usually contain elements that kill and remove bacteria in dogs’ mouths and clean their teeth from plaque.

REGULAR CHECK-UPS & DENTAL CLEANINGS

Just as for humans, no matter how well we brush our teeth and take care of them, we still need to visit the dentist from time to time. The same works for dogs. Maintaining dental hygiene for your dog at home is important but you should still visit your vet for occasional dental checkups and cleanings.

Regular visits to the vet will also increase the chances of noticing and diagnosing any health issues your dog might have and getting properly prescribed treatment on time.

Canine Hero Award

A ROYAL AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY AWARD

Every year amongst our canine friends, hero dogs emerge that have unique stories or have made outstanding accomplishments. This may be in helping people, bravery or transforming lives in adversity. They may be pet dogs, assistance dogs, therapy, defence, service or rescue dogs. The common factor is that these remarkable dogs and humans transform and enrich each other’s lives. This could be through a lifesaving event, community service, therapy or emotional comfort or other innovative services.

The Royal Agricultural Society of NSW Canine Hero Awards aim is to acknowledge and reward these deserving dogs at a presentation which was held at the ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show, Best in Show day on Sunday 16 April 2023.

Such a Canine Hero is ‘Monty,’ a young chocolate Labrador Retriever, owned by Kristy Milligan and bred by DOGS NSW breeder Pauline Gill.

Pauline Gill specialises in breeding highly intelligent and purposeful Labrador Retrievers. She shows her breeding stock and also exhibited at the ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show this year. She has bred over 200 operational dogs who work in fields such as scent detection for the Police and ADF, bio-security, medical alert - diabetes and epilepsy, truffle-hunting as well as sporting and performance dogs for field retrieving and obedience.

Commenting on Monty’s early beginnings Pauline said, “Monty is a young chocolate Labrador who comes from a long line of Assistance Dogs developed by our breeding program over the last 15 years. Monty and his litter experienced Early Neurological Stimulation and Sound desensitisation and he was raised in an enriched environment. Our pups have a head start in life and are highly valued for their intelligence and biddability. Placed in the right hands our dogs thrive.”

“The vast majority of our Labs are purchased as assistance dogs for people PTSD or Autism support. It is one of our PTSD dogs Monty (Tapua The Full Monty) and his owner Kristy Milligan I offered to the Royal Agricultural Society for the Companion dog award,” said Pauline.

In mid-2021 May/June Pauline was contacted by Kristy, a first responder suffering extreme PTSD. Kristy acquired this condition from accumulated experiences whilst serving as a Sergeant with NSW Police. Kristy is also a decorated Policewoman attaining a bravery award for her service, The Commissioners’ Valour Award (the highest award for bravery in NSWPF), National Police Service Medal, NSW Police Sesquicentenary Citation, NSW Police Medal, NSWP 15 Year Service.

Kristy presented to Pauline, as many do with PTSD, anxious, hyper-vigilant, speaking 100 miles an hour and desperately seeking support for her status quo. Her mental health had deteriorated, she was isolated socially, lacked sleep and on multiple medications and was under the care of multiple specialists. Pauline luckily had dealt with many military veterans and first responders seeking a support dog.

However, unlike military veterans, First Responders do not have the right to obtain an Assistance Dog support dog acknowledged within their rehabilitation system. All expenses and training are at Kristy’s expense. No dog leaves Tapua Labs without being linked with experienced trainers or organisations, so Kristy was linked with INTEGRA Service Dogs in the ACT, who oversaw and guided her in her training. INTEGRA has allowed Monty to be coated with INTEGRA however, 99% of the training that Kristy does is as an owner/trainer and she regularly keeps in contact with Pauline at Tapua Kennels.

Pauline says, “Kristy is singularly the most competent natural trainer I have ever met. Monty was fully accredited with his Public Access in March 2023, while he was fully working as an Assistance Dog. Monty legally had to be over 18 months old to get Public Access Accreditation – known in the industry as the PA Test.

“If you speak to Kristy she will identify multiple skills she has trained him in including standard sit stand, drop stay, come and loose-lead walking, however, some of the PTSD-specific tasks are:

• He can locate and retrieve medication from cupboards or her handbag.

• Monty is specifically trained to find and retrieve Kristy’s medication.

• He can locate and identify for Kristy where her vehicle is located in a car park – many PTSD sufferers have meltdowns when in public and the dog is trained to ‘find the car’ when in public or a shopping mall.

• He will distract and refocus Kristy’s attention when she is in a PTSD zone – disassociation from reality is a problem for people with PTSD. Monty will persistently redirect her attention, helping Kristy to remain grounded and functional in life.

• When Kristy has had an anxiety attack in public, he will make direct contact and guide her to a safe place.

• Monty gives Kristy a specific cue that he has learnt to recognise when she is triggered (for whatever reason) and his presence and attention actively help Kristy to de-escalate the situation.

• Kristy recognises she is a driven and performance/work-orientated person and Monty has taught her the value of taking a break, looking after your mental health and finding quality.

• Monty’s calmness and bond with Kristy has helped Kristy to see she has a purpose and skill and has value.

Kristy credits Monty with creating stability and order in her life which previously did not exist. Also, her experience in training and bonding with Monty has given her purpose and direction in her life in education of the public, particularly regarding the lack of options for access to Assistance Dogs for First Responders.

Is Flaxseed Good for Dogs?

Flaxseed, also known as flax seed or simply flax, is a natural superfood preferred by many humans. But what about dogs? Do our furry friends like eating flax seed and is flax seed healthy for them?

Flaxseed can be given to dogs as it contains vital minerals, protein, fat and fibre. It is a healthy superfood that possesses many essential fatty acids such as ALA, also known as Omega-3. Flaxseed also protects a dog from getting cancer and provides protection against diabetes. Flaxseed can be fed to a dog in the form of ground flaxseed, flaxseed oil or the whole seeds. Flaxseed is also present in many dog treats and food, and the dietary fibre helps constipation issues. It is obtained from the flax plant and benefits the health, coat and skin of a dog immensely. Read on to know more about the benefits of this superfood!

Can Dogs Eat Flaxseed?

Yes, dogs can most certainly eat flaxseed. Flaxseed can be introduced to the diet of a dog steadily so that the dog’s stomach does not get upset. The seeds can be ground before you give them to your precious pooch. If you feed it whole seeds, they will simply travel the dog’s digestive system without the essential nutrients getting absorbed. This provides no benefit for the dog as the seeds come out undigested, in the same form they were eaten. It is not recommended that pet owners give their dogs whole seeds.

Dogs that are given whole flaxseeds will not be benefited in any way. This wastes money, time and effort as feeding whole seeds will do no harm, but also no gain. Interestingly, flax seeds are quite stable and have been discovered unharmed in Egyptian tombs! The benefits of flaxseed can be reaped by the dog if it eats it in ground form. Dog owners can sprinkle ground flaxseed on the dog’s food or feed it through a capsule.

However, it is imperative to know that flaxseeds go rancid a short while after being ground. Thus, flaxseed must be ground close to the feeding time. There are many dog food manufacturers that have included flaxseed in dog food as an ingredient, but it isn’t yet common. The majority of dog foods lack natural nutrients found in flax seeds. It is essential to feed your dog a flaxseed supplement of good quality. It is also believed that the system of dogs finds it tough to convert ALA to EPA and DHA. Thus, for easier conversion of ALA into DHA and EPA, it is important to give your dog high-quality flax. As a responsible dog owner, you must locate a high-quality source from a well-reviewed seller. Feeding your dog fresh-ground flax supplements that are of good quality nourishes your dog. The dog benefits from the nutrients and high-fibre content in flax.

The dosage of ground flaxseed that is safe to be fed to a dog varies with each dog’s weight. It is imperative to give the appropriate dosage that is safe for your dog. The amount can be adjusted gradually, but the schedule must be strictly followed. It is vital to consult with your dog’s vet regarding the addition of flaxseed in your dog’s diet, especially if the dog is hypoglycemic or diabetic. Only the vet can provide you with the right recommendation if your dog is hypoglycemic or diabetic.

Health Benefits of Flaxseed?

Flaxseeds are brown and golden in colour and are produced by the flax plant. They have a nutty taste and possess numerous health benefits for a dog. They have antioxidants and essential fatty acids in them that provide many benefits. Flaxseeds contain Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids that aid in keeping the dog’s coat and skin shiny and healthy. The alpha-linolenic acid (also commonly known as ALA or Omega-3) in flaxseed is renowned for its anti-inflammatory qualities that strengthen the immune system of a dog. Flaxseed contains protein, dietary fibre, lignans, and manganese.

Refrigerate the ground flaxseed to avoid spoiling.

ALA or Omega-3 has proven to be quite beneficial to a dog’s health. Omega-3 helps in the proper functioning of cells, contributes to cell membrane structure, maintains the health of a dog’s skin and coat, and strengthens the immune system. The Omega-3 fatty acids can also benefit dogs suffering from inflammatory, allergic, or autoimmune problems.

Flaxseeds have many benefits as mentioned earlier. They help in maintaining the healthy coat and skin of a dog. If you supplement your dog with flaxseed frequently or regularly, you could improve your dog’s skin and fur health.

The anti-inflammatory qualities of the fatty acids present in flaxseed, such as alpha-linolenic acid, help in eradicating skin irritation. They also aid mobility by improving your dog’s joint movement. Omega-3 helps in reducing inflammation of kidneys in dogs suffering from kidney disease by producing anti-inflammatory agents in the system of the dog. Flaxseed also leads to healthy digestion in a dog and has proven to lower its blood pressure.

Flaxseeds also support the immune system of a dog. A healthy immune system keeps the dog’s body from catching any problems. Flaxseed contains lignans which are antioxidants that aid a dog’s immune system in fighting off infections and diseases. They also help a dog in decreasing inflammation in any body part.

When there are many hormones being secreted in the dog’s body, they are facing an adrenal problem. Flaxseed can also help dogs suffering from adrenal issues as they have high fibre content and a high amount of lignans. The lignans can be found in the hulls of the seed especially. Including a healthy and safe amount of flaxseed in your dog’s diet can provide many benefits and can also control adrenal problem symptoms.

SDG lignan can be found in flax seed hulls. They contain high fibre levels that are known to benefit dogs that have a deficiency of fibre in their body. This also helps in soaking the bodily toxins and improving the volume and frequency of bowel movements. You should supplement your dog with flaxseed based on the recommendation of your dog’s vet only.
