Chairman's Report
Greetings to all!
Winter is coming, so do take care to keep your very young puppies and the old dears warm, as the greatest losses of both occur during the coldest months. Whilst Australia has very mild winters compared to most countries, we are often quite remiss about turning up the heat.
Newborn puppies cannot control their body heat for the first 10 days and are only born with enough fat to cover the first few days. Additionally, if puppies are cold, the vagus nerve, which controls swallowing, will not work. If the temperature within the whelping box is poor, you will start loosing puppies in the first 2-3 days. Create a ‘cave’ to control heat rising away from the puppies. Bitches usually feel more secure in a small enclosed area as would happen in nature. The older darlings will benefit from coats or blankets to keep their backs warm, as like us, they usually have back and joint arthritis.
Threat of Ehrlichiosis disease
In this month’s magazine, (page 8) there is an article on Ehrlichiosis, an emerging disease in Australia which must be taken seriously. This could be an Australian wide threat within the next 10 years. This bacterial disease is carried by the brown tick, which has an extensive distribution around Australia, particularly along the coastal areas. If travelling interstate, I would strongly recommend that you place all of your dogs on tick preventatives ahead of time and do not take your dogs through any bush or scrub areas.
While only first diagnosed in far north Western Australia in May of last year, this disease is now considered to be almost endemic in the Northern Territory, and is seen throughout the Kimberly and Pilbara areas in Western Australia, as well as having been found in far north South Australia. This shows the disease must have been present in this country for quite a few years undetected and is spreading as people travel with their dogs, particularly within the indigenous communities. While this disease has not yet been reported in Queensland, it is only a matter of time before this occurs. There have been three reported cases within New South Wales, but all were from dogs brought into the state from far north Western Australia.
Once infected, dogs can develop this serious disease and can die if not treated effectively. If not treated properly and for the recommended period of four weeks, the infected animals become chronic with debilitating consequences. Luckily, there is no dog to dog transmission. There is an article that I have written which can be viewed on DOGS NSW website: https://www.dogsnsw.org. au/members/news-and-updates/emerging-disease-ehrlichiosis-in-dogs/
Please take this warning seriously. This is a notifiable disease nationally!
The DOGS NSW Health & Welfare Charity Ltd considers this a serious threat and has donated money to Animal Management in Rural and Remote Indigenous Communities (AMMRIC), who are a Charitable organisation that has extensive history of assisting indigenous communities with canine care and welfare. The donation is going towards trying to control dog tick infestations in far north-west NSW, as it is one of the more likely points of entry of the disease into our state.
On the political front, we continue to engage with local politicians to try and have some input into the content of the Codes of Practice for the Breeding of Dogs and Cats. The Codes are supposed to be updated by the end of May. The major stakeholders (DOGS NSW included) were supposed to be included in their development, but this has not happened within the very limited timeline. With the current review of the Welfare Acts, DOGS NSW feels it is very important that any new Codes reflect these amended Acts, otherwise we will all be back to the drawing board once again in the very near future. If there is any movement in this area we will inform you all as soon as possible.

Editor's message
No one likes to think of their dog getting old, as their lives are already much shorter in comparison to human years; however, being equipped with the knowledge of how to care for an ageing dog plus proper nutrition, is a huge way of boosting the quality of your dog’s golden years and possibly his longevity. Royal Canin have given DOGS NSW permission to reproduce one such informative article, entitled, ‘Signs your dog is getting older and how to care for an ageing dog.’ The feature commences on page 22 and is comprised of 4 parts:
1. Signs of an ageing dog
2. How your dog’s nutrition needs to change with age
3. Food for aging dogs
4. How to care for an ageing dog
As one of the symptoms of an ageing dog is dental disease, a way to alleviate this problem is with good dental hygiene. Veterinarian and author Dr Claire Stevens discusses the best way to clean your dog’s teeth, in an extract from her current book, ‘Dr Claire’s Love your Dog.’ Even if you have never tried cleaning your dog’s teeth at a young age, Dr Claire gives some very simple ways to start the process. The feature commences on page 13. As an added bonus, we also have a giveaway of Dr Claire’s book, where members have the opportunity to win of one of eight copies of Dr Claire’s complete guide to caring for your canine friend. Please turn to page 15 for competition details.
We have coverage of two specialty shows in this edition, commencing on page 9 with the Boston Terrier Club of Metropolitan NSW, held on 10 April and directly following, the Newcastle & Hunter Region German Shepherd Dog Club’s Open Show, held on 27 March.
We’ve commenced advertising for the Sydney Dog Lovers Show, which will be held on Saturday and Sunday 7 and 8 August, with many of our breed clubs in attendance, showcasing their lovely breeds at the event and talking to the general public. For members of any of the rarer breeds that do not have a breed club, but would like to do a 10 minute talk about their breed at Ask the Breeder stand, please contact me at DOGS NSW to discuss and I will forward your details onto the organisers. There will be more information about the Dog Lovers Show in the July issue.
The Mudgee and District Kennel and Obedience Club have a muchloved life member in Chief Instructor Betty Rae. They have honoured her in an article befitting her great legacy to the Club, as she has very recently retired as Chief Instructor after 40 years of service. Congratulations Betty! To read more, please turn to page 21.
This month’s breed feature is the Cane Corso, a medium to large sized dog of Italian origin. This breed is very energetic, inquisitive and highly independent and is known for its fierce loyalty, making it suitable as a guard dog, and/or protector and companion animal for the family home. The breed feature commences on page 16.

NEWS New warnings about ticks transmitting deadly disease to dogs in Australia
Ehrlichiosis is a deadly disease in dogs caused by the bite of a brown tick infected with an exotic pathogen Ehrlichia Canis (E.canis) and animal health authorities are on alert for it spreading to other parts of the country.
In May 2020, E.canis was detected in a small number of dogs in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. This is the first detection of E.canis in dogs in Australia that had not been imported from overseas and is a notifiable disease, according to the NSW Department of Primary Industries. Animal health authorities are concerned that the tick-borne disease will soon hit other parts of the country.
Companion Animal Network Australia (CAN) National Executive Trish Ennis warned, “We have reports of confirmed cases of infected dogs in various parts of Australia, including Broome in Western Australia and the APY Lands in South Australia.”
Although infected dogs do not directly transmit the disease to other dogs, the transmission occurs through infected ticks, particularly the brown dog tick, which is widespread in mainland Australia.
“Investigations into the origin of the infection in both northern WA and the Northern Territory are ongoing, with no obvious leads at this time, which means it’s possible the disease has been present in some regions for some time,” said Ms Ennis.
In early 2021, ticks infected with the bacteria that causes ehrlichiosis were also found in South Australia’s far north.
Veterinarian Dr Julie Bellamy, CEO Animal Welfare League SA, said, “Ehrlichiosis is a very serious disease with a high mortality rate in chronically infected dogs. Infected animals require veterinary treatment and supportive care.
Prevention
“Dog owners must be vigilant. There are a number of things you can do to help prevent this disease in your dogs, including placing your dog on a tick control program. Dog owners should consult with their veterinarians on the risk and preventative measures appropriate for their geographical area,” she said.
The National Pest and Disease Outbreak website advises pet owners to inspect their dog daily for ticks, especially if they have been in a tick-infested area. Run your fingers through your dog’s coat over their skin and feel for abnormal bumps, paying particular attention to the head and neck, inside their ears, on their chest, between their toes and around their mouths and gums.
Symptoms of E.canis
The initial clinical signs of E.canis infection can include: fever, lethargy, enlarged lymph nodes, loss of appetite, discharge from the eyes and nose, weight loss and bleeding disorders. If your dog is showing any of the above clinical signs, please contact a vet immediately.
“We recommend you contact your veterinarian if you have a dog that is unwell because early treatment provides the best chance for them to recover,” Dr Bellamy added.
A spokesperson from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, WA advised, “In areas where brown dog ticks are present or dogs to be rehomed are sick, rehoming agencies are encouraged to have dogs tested for E. canis before moving them, to ensure they are not spreading the disease to another area. In Western Australia, movement conditions apply to dogs being moved out of the Kimberley, where the disease is established.”

Please note: Ehrlichiosis is predominantly a disease of dogs, but there have been rare cases of human infection. The Department of Health has information on their website about ticks and human health precautions. SHOWS
Boston Terrier Club of Metropolitan NSW Inc Inaugural Championship Show ~
2021
The inaugural Boston Terrier Club of Metropolitan NSW Inc was held at the DOGS NSW complex on the 10 April, 2021 in glorious sunny conditions with 51 entries from NSW and interstate.
The officiated Breed Judge Glen Vernon, owned and exhibited Boston Terriers from the world famous Bostonway Kennel, belonging to the late Eileen Bond. Glen handled multi BIS winner Bostonway Bozo, who still holds the breed record for BIS awards at Specialty and All Breed Shows.
Rebecca Rafton judged property classes and novelty events that attracted a large number of non-showers, who were invited to attend with their Bostons, to introduce them to the show environment. The feedback from pet owners, was that they enjoyed the day immensely. For most, it was their first show experience and many vowed to return to future dog shows.
Glen awarded Best in Show to CH. Ozstock Ima Sitcom, bred and owned by Dianne Bradshaw and Runner Up to Best in Show to Ozstock Strike it Rich bred by Dianne Bradshaw and owned by Jennifer Foster. These winners were thrilled to receive beautiful rosettes donated by Glen that were in memory of Eileen Bond.
Show Secretary, Amy Gilson worked tirelessly to organise the show from start to finish and was responsible for the trophy table, which was second to none and sagged under the weight of the many wonderful prizes that all carried a Boston theme.
A specialty show cannot be successful without breed owners ensuring the presence of a strong entry, so thank you to all for contributing to what was a magnificent event.
Rob Harbin ~ President
The show was well attended by exhibitors and the general public alike. It was a great opportunity to involve all that own and love the Boston Terrier breed. We also had an excellent attendance of families looking to add a Boston Terrier to their lives. It was a great chance for them to talk to and meet face to face with ethical ANKC registered breeders.
During our lunch break we held our fun classes for all Boston Terriers and their owners that attended on the day. We had awards for the Wiggliest Bum, Smallest Boston on the Day and Tallest Boston on the Day, Fancy Dress, Egg and Spoon Race and Best Trick. All of our fun class competitors received a prize and all our winners received a print to commemorate their win. Everyone who attended the day enjoyed the competition, raffle, fun classes, silent auction, nibbles and drinks during the presentation at the end of the show.
A massive thank you to Libby Mair and Blackhawk for sponsoring our show and being so generous with their product.
Amy Gilson ~ Show Secretary

Newcastle & Hunter Region German Shepherd Dog Club Inc Open Show
The German Shepherd Open Show had 77 Stock Coat entries and 19 Long Stock Coat entries. It was a beautiful day for judge Greg Green from Victoria, perhaps a bit too beautiful (hot and sunny), but Greg did his job and so did the handlers. As a visitor from the Poodle world, I was very impressed by the time taken in judging each exhibit at GSD specialities like this one, covering all the usual conformation checks as well as measuring both the height at withers and the body/ leg proportion, the demanding working of the dogs in the ring, and the detail and consistency of the critique of each dog in its class, broadcast class by class to all present at the show over the excellent PA system. Watching the dogs and listening to the critiques by such an experienced German Shepherd specialist judge is a great way to learn about the breed.
Judge Greg Green was also asked to do something that is not done in his home state of Victoria, and that’s awarding a final Best in Show between the Stock Coat and Long Stock Coat winners. The final Best in Show winner was Kurt Morton and Yvonne Yun’s Long Stock Coat intermediate bitch Siobahn Greyt Expectations. Runnerup was the Stock Coat Open dog Kim Graham’s Olymp vom Larchenhain (Imp Deu).
Another interesting activity was the breed survey conducted at the end of the conformation show. This was conducted by Greg Green joined by Mrs Fay Stokes (NSW), and included a gun test. The sustained work being done by the German Shepherd Clubs to ensure the soundness of their dogs was apparent in the dogs present on the day.
Some of the handlers commented afterwards that the ground maintenance at Hillsborough made for kind treatment of their shins and ankles, because the well-tended ring was nice deep lawn, but not too soft, and didn’t have the shock impact of some of the harder grounds around.
There was an excellent trophy table and generous sponsorship by Black Hawk. Mr Green congratulated exhibitors on their sportsmanship. As usual, a lot of hard work by the Committee went in to making this event a great success.

Cleaning your dog's teeth
An extract from ‘Dr Claire’s Love your Dog’ The complete guide to caring for your canine friend
YOUR DOG
Claire Stevens
Not taking care of your dog’s teeth can actually reduce his lifespan. Up to 80 per cent of dogs have periodontal disease by the time they are three years of age. Periodontal disease is a progressive disease of the supporting tissues surrounding teeth and the main cause of early tooth loss. It starts when bacteria and food particles combine to form plaque on the teeth and within a matter of days, minerals in the saliva have bonded with the plaque to form tartar, a hard substance that adheres to the teeth. The bacteria work their way under the gum and cause gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the gums. Once under the gums, bacteria destroy the supporting tissue around the tooth and this can lead to your dog losing teeth. This condition is known as periodontitis. Gingivitis and periodontitis make up the changes that are referred to as periodontal disease. The bacteria associated with periodontal disease can travel in the bloodstream, to infect the heart, kidneys and liver.
It’s important to catch dental disease in the early stages so you need to inspect your dog’s mouth regularly for tartar, which may appear as a brownish-gold build-up on the teeth, close to the gum line. Gingivitis may appear as redness or bleeding along the gum line. Other signs of dental disease include bad breath, drooling, pawing at the mouth, difficulty chewing and loose or missing teeth. If you notice any of these signs in your pet, make an appointment with your vet, as the only way to effectively remove tartar from your dog’s teeth and prevent the progression of periodontal disease is to get a dental scale and polish at the vet clinic.
With a vet clean and follow-up care, gingivitis is reversible. Periodontal disease is not reversible, but regular at-home dental care can lengthen intervals between vet cleanings (which for many dogs need to be done annually) and slow down the progression of the condition.
Many dogs quite like having their teeth brushed. Apart from the sensation and the flavours of the doggie toothpaste (beef, poultry, seafood), they mostly like the attention they are getting from you. All that attention makes them very happy. Nevertheless, some dogs are not comfortable at all about having a toothbrush poking around inside their mouth. And it can be hard to get a dog accustomed to that on a daily basis. With that in mind the earlier you get your dog used to the process the easier it will be, so start when they are a puppy. This, of course may be harder with an older rescue dog which may have never had its teeth cleaned. In that case I suggest you take it slowly and train your dog in the habit of teeth brushing over time.
These are the steps I advise owners to take before they sink their teeth into the job, always remembering to stay calm, cool and patiently loving. Once your dog gets used to the process it comes down to about one minute a day of brushing for your dog to have better dental health for the rest of his life.
1. Before you brush
Select an area of the house where you’ll be doing future brushing. Get your dog to sit on a table if the dog is a small breed- and then just rub his muzzle, lift his lip and simply look at his teeth. Give lots of loving praise and reward with a treat.
2. Introduce the toothpaste
Start by just putting some toothpaste on your finger and rub it around your dog’s mouth while holding the toothbrush in the other hand. Once they are tolerating that, bring the toothbrush up near his face. If you go slow, he will see it coming and understand that’s not going to hurt him. You can also try putting a dab of paste on a favourite treat and then put it on top of the brush so he can get used to the bristles by his mouth. Again, follow up immediately with praise and a treat, even if you already put a treat on the brush it’s his lucky day!
VET CHAT
3. Brush Lightly
Begin by slipping the toothbrush between one of your dog’s cheeks and teeth and move it back and forth, or with a circular motion from back to front. It’s not important to be brushing correctly you’ve both still got your training wheels on. A few seconds is plenty at first try, followed by the usual praise and reward. If that goes well try the same thing on the other side of your dog’s mouth, including the praise-and –reward part.
4. How long?
Aim for no more than a minute for the whole mouth front, sides and back, both outsides and insides of the teeth, if possible. Eventually, you won’t have to give a treat each time. Move through steps 1-3 slowly, this process might take two weeks or longer for some more sensitive or older dogs.
5. Which toothpaste?
Never use human toothpaste, baking soda, or hydrogen peroxide, as they are all unsafe for dogs to swallow. Use the special doggie toothpaste which you can get from your local pet supplies outlet or vet clinic.
While daily brushing is great, your vet may also recommend a back-up treatment a plaque prevention product that you apply to your dog’s teeth and gums on a weekly basis. The product adheres to the surface of the teeth, creating a barrier that prevents plaque from forming. Several dental diets and treats can also help keep plaque and tartar to a minimum. These diets tend to have larger kibbles to provide abrasive action against the tooth surface when chewed or may contain ingredients that help prevent tartar mineralisation: some vets sell them as prescription products.
Image (left): Grade Four dental disease in a dog. Vets will give your dog a grade of dental disease based on a dental grading scale of grade 0 to grade 4. I recommend a professional dental cleaning and evaluation under anaesthesia for any pet receiving a grade 2 or higher.

Distinguished Service and Life Membership Awards
These awards exist to recognise the valuable contribution of individuals to the current and future existence of the organisation. In particular, the Awards System, described below, is intended to recognise a wide range of factors, more than simply by being a long-term Member. It also seeks to create awards so that significant contributions to DOGS NSW may be recognised appropriately.
The two Awards available to Members are:
1. Distinguished Service Award
2. Honorary Life Membership
The award of Life Membership is the highest honour that DOGS NSW can bestow on an individual. It is conferred on those who have made an exceptional contribution to the existence and advancement of the organisation. The aim is to make life membership hard to obtain so that it is respected by members and valued by recipients
PROCEDURE
Members wishing to nominate a fellow Member for either Award may apply to the Office for the appropriate Nomination Form.
Each form must be completed by two Members, in good standing and lodged with the Office prior to the advertised closing date for nominations.
All nominations are to be treated in the strictest confidence.
Nominations will be referred to the Honours Working Party for due consideration to be followed by the Working Party’s recommendations to the Board of Directors.
AWARD CRITERIA
1. Distinguished Service Award
The Nominee is to be a continuous financial member of DOGS NSW for a minimum period of 15 years.
The Nominee must have served the dog world in an effective and meaningful way; such as Member of an Affiliate, a Committee Member, a Steward, an Event Organiser and any of the other many contributing roles which require a considerable degree of personal endeavour, involvement and dedication.
2. Honorary Life Membership
The Nominee is to be a continuous financial member of DOGS NSW for a minimum period of 25 years.

Cane Corso
History
A stylish Italian breed with Roman origins, the Cane Corso is an ideal protector. Powerfully built and social at heart, it is a true family guardian.
A relatively new breed, only formally recognised by the Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC) in 2003, the Cane Corso has a distinguished history in Italy, going back as far as ancient Roman times, when they were used as dogs of war.
The Cane Corso was commonly used to protect property, family and herd livestock. Throughout the breed’s existence, it was also used as a big game hunter. Its power, courage, agility and tracking ability made the breed especially valuable with wild boar, stag and bear. With the decline in big game hunting, the breed found a home with Italian farmers and was often used as a driver, moving animals to market and slaughterhouses.
Of Mastiff origins, the breed has seen a recent resurgence in breeding popularity since the 1970s, when it was in danger of extinction. Italian enthusiasts began a recovery process that led to the breed becoming formally recognised in Italy in 1987.
Appearance
The Cane Corso’s closest cousin is the Neapolitan Mastiff, however, differences have since filtered down over the decades; the Cane Corso lacks the loose skin of other Mastiff breeds. Strong and elegant at the same time, the breed is large and masculine while being lean and athletic. It is usually longer than it is tall, weighing in at around 50kg for males and 45kg for females.
The Cane Corso comes in a wide range of colours, from black, tan with a black mask, blue/grey and brindle. The predominant colouring is either black or tan. Eye colour will reflect the coat colour. Dark coated animals have dark eyes, while light coats feature light coloured eyes. The double coat is short but oily, enabling it to repel water. The Cane Corso can feature small white markings on the chest, toes, chin and nose. The head is large and typically molossoid. The muzzle is shorter than the skull, with a flat front and generally strong and square. Eyes are medium-sized, ovoid and slightly protruding with close fitting eyelids.
Temperament
As a guardian, the Cane Corso is extremely agile, responsive and wary of strangers. The breed is very dominant and has an intimidating appearance and stature. Early social outings with humans and other dogs is essential for a happy family life, and the breed can be controlled with a firm hand and a strong influence.
The Cane Corso bonds early with its adoptive family and is particularly protective of children. Because of its need to keep the status quo, the Cane Corso often dislikes new things, animals and people, so owners must be careful when introducing the dog to new places and people.
Maintenance
A low maintenance breed, the Cane Corso’s coat will shed once yearly and only requires bathing around every six weeks. Unless the dog gets particularly dirty, brushing is only required after bathing.
The Cane Corso needs regular exercise. At least an average-sized backyard is required, as well as a walk once a day.
Health & Suitability
Entropion (turned in eyelids) and typical bone and joint problems, such as hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia, are not uncommon. Since it’s such a new breed in Australia, full reports on these conditions are yet to be compiled. However, breeders have been selecting only healthy dogs from Italy for the breed’s continued development.
The Cane Corso needs an experienced handler that is able to commit to the time it takes to train.
The breed is best suited to those who want a loyal, loving, family guard dog; it is an ideal family pet and personal protector.

PetCloud’s National Pet Directory to connect with Pet Friendly Places
With more Australians than ever owning a pet, Australia’s leading pet services platform PetCloud, has launched a National Pet Directory to help pet owners easily locate pet-friendly places, businesses and services in their neighbourhood or when they travel.
Like TripAdvisor for pets, the directory uses GPS technology to show the nearest dog parks and beaches, as well as dogfriendly cafés and pubs, with the option to review each place.
PetCloud CEO Deb Morrison said the directory was already home to more than 12,000 places and businesses across the nation.
“Just like us, dogs enjoy heading out for Sunday brunch and a walk on the beach and with this directory pet owners will never again have to worry about whether their four-legged friend is welcome at a café or allowed on a beach all the information is right there in the palm of their hand,” Ms Morrison said.
“It’s not just people who are ‘holidaying here this year’, it’s millions of pets too, and we want to see all creatures great and small enjoy everything Australia has to offer after a rough 12 months of lockdowns and self-isolating. With the help of this directory, we hope to support local businesses that welcome man’s best friend. At last count there were more than 30 million pets in Australia that’s more pets than people so being pet-friendly can mean big business for a pub or café.”
PetCloud is inviting pet owners to add their favourite local haunts, and pet-friendly businesses can also add their details to the directory online, so Australia’s animal lovers can find the best places to take their pets in every city and town.
To view the directory online or add a pet-friendly location or business, visit: petcloud.com.au/d/
The pet directory can also be accessed through the PetCloud App (on IOS or Android), which connects more than 100,000 Australians with PetCloud services such as pet sitting, dog walking, doggy day care, pet taxis and now the pet directory.

Betty Rae - our beloved Chief Instructor
Betty is an extremely treasured member, and life member at that, of the Mudgee and District Kennel and Obedience Club. Even though she is in her late eighties (born 15/10/32), she only recently formally retired from her position as Chief Instructor at the club. Regardless, we have made her our honorary “forever” Chief Instructor.
Such an incredible legacy, Betty has been with the Club from the very first day, when she was in attendance at the Club’s formation meeting in 1979. She became the Club’s Chief Instructor for what she thought would only be a short period of time, when the founding Chief Instructor, Eric Briant became ill. Little did she realise she would still be in the position approximately 40 years later!
In those initial days, training classes were held at the showground in Mudgee, but then additional classes were held to accommodate training needs in Gulgong, which was, and still is today, where Betty lived with her husband Charlie. As participation in the Mudgee classes dwindled, while Gulgong thrived, training became a permanent fixture at Victoria Park in Gulgong.
Needless to say, both Betty and Charlie have been an integral part of the Club in so many ways. Come rain, hail or shine, there they were at the grounds on Sunday mornings. Betty would be instructing and managing an array of training equipment, while Charlie would be carting equipment for us, taking their own dogs into classes, and when he had a spare moment, making us all a cuppa! But it wasn’t just Sunday training, there was also some trialling to be squeezed in, demonstration teams to take part in, organising mock trials and of course, hosting our own August weekend of annual trials. Additionally, the club also runs an annual Point Score competition. The “Betty Rae Trophy”, awarded to the highest achieving obedience trialling dog and handler, will always be a prominent fixture in this competition, ensuring Betty will never be forgotten.
It doesn’t stop there though. The couple were also invaluable members of the area Sports Council for many, many years, or perhaps it would be more accurate to say decades. Their service to the Sports Council certainly didn’t go unnoticed and they are currently being inducted into their Hall of Fame. Such a fantastic recognition, for such a dedicated pair of individuals.
It hasn’t always been an easy road for Betty. I remember starting classes under Betty’s instruction as a beginner in 2014. At that time, she was struggling with her mobility as she was having reoccurring problems with her right leg. Even after enduring a number of hospital visits, she would always return to instruct us, though eventually this was done from her wheelchair.
“Sitting in a wheelchair, makes it quite difficult to show the learners what to do. I’ve loved instructing for so long but unfortunately age has beaten me.” said Betty.
An amazingly strong woman, who is now dealing with yet another setback as sadly, she now copes with having had her right leg removed earlier this year. Yet still, she has returned to Sunday classes, and still assists with instructing groups, as our number of members continues to grow. She is truly remarkable and completely unstoppable!
Signs your dog is getting old and how to care for an ageing dog
PART 1 ~ Signs of Ageing Dogs
Ageing is a natural, complex process that may impact the body’s ability to maintain several metabolic processes. There are a number of signs to be aware of when identifying whether a dog is a senior.
The ageing process in dogs is a gradual one that can sometimes go unnoticed by their owners. There are a number of signs to be aware of when identifying whether a dog is a senior, as well as a number of changes that ageing dogs experience as they grow older.
Ageing dogs
Ageing is a natural, complex biological process that may impact the body’s ability to maintain several metabolic processes and increases its susceptibility to disease. As inevitable as it is, there are ways to slow down the process or at least avoid speeding it up. The main thing is to prevent or delay the onset of disease where possible, identify it at the earliest opportunity if it does strike and treat it vigorously to preserve the dog’s health as long as possible. Preventative medicine is the favoured approach.
When is a dog considered old?
Age is a number not a condition. Maturity and old age are arbitrary concepts defined on the basis of life expectancy. A dog is regarded as mature when it reaches the mid-way point of its expected lifespan and it is old when it has three quarters of its expected lifespan behind it. Of course, dogs of different sizes do not age in the same way or at the same rate. Small breeds have a longer life expectancy than large breeds, so a small dog will age more slowly. Conversely, large dogs take longer to grow to adulthood and age faster. That clearly means that they do not have the same needs.
Consequences of ageing for the body
Ageing is a natural process that affects the entire body. No organ system is spared. That said, individual susceptibility or the predisposition of an organ will contribute to the development of a disease. The main thing is to understand the ageing process to slow down its effects.
Fat deposits increase
Dogs tend to put on weight as they grow older. The animal builds up its fat deposits at the expense of muscle mass. When a lot of muscle mass is lost, the animal’s mobility will be affected, leading it to expend less energy. As a result, the dog puts on more weight, loses more muscle mass, and so on. This makes it vital to monitor the animal’s body condition so that it is prevented from putting on weight and losing muscle mass. It is also essential to treat any pain the dog may have that might prevent it from exercising.
Dental problems
Build up of plaque causes gum inflammation and infections (periodontal disease), which can lead to the teeth falling out. These gum problems mean the dog finds eating more difficult because chewing is painful. As well as the unpleasant bad breath this produces, the rapid increase of bacteria that spread in the body can cause damage to other organs. The immune system is permanently working overtime, which puts a great strain on the body, making it more susceptible to infection.
Dental hygiene is essential throughout the dog’s life, but especially so in ageing dogs. Ensuring your dog is used to teeth brushing as a puppy is a preventive measure that will help to preserve the quality and health of its teeth for the whole of its life. Diet has an important role to play here. The formulation and even the physical characteristics of kibbles size, shape, hardness can help to slow down the build up of dental plaque.
Slower digestive transit
Digestive transit slows down in older dogs. This is linked to reduced muscle tone in the intestine and a drop in secretion of digestive acids that help to break down food. This exposes the dog to constipation often followed by diarrhoea. These problems can be controlled with an adapted diet.
Just like the rest of the body, the intestine starts to work less efficiently. Its digestive performance is reduced a little, it absorbs nutrients in lower quantities and it takes more time to adapt to a change of diet. A high-quality, easily digestible food minimises these effects.
Immune system and senses
Ageing also brings a reduction in immune protection, meaning ageing dogs are more susceptible to infection and disease. Along with this, dogs experience a loss of sight and smell which may result in a reduced appetite.
It is important to make sure the dog remains active even as it grows older. An animal that moves around less, is less attentive or too quiet should be examined by a veterinarian. It is essential that the inevitable effects of ageing are not confused with a disability due to organ impairment.
With proper care and a diet tailored to their unique needs, ageing dogs can continue to live a happy, healthy life. If you are ever unsure on how to feed and care for your ageing dog’s changing needs, it is best to consult a vet.
PART 2 ~ How your dog's nutrition needs to change with age
As your dog grows and matures its nutritional requirements will change, and so should its diet. Growing puppies, fully grown adults and mature dogs all have different nutritional requirements. As a consequence, a diet needs to be adapted in every stage of life to ensure the dog remains as healthy as possible.
Ageing dogs have a significantly different nutritional requirement to puppies, and even adult dogs. Good care is essential if a dog is to remain in good health throughout its life. Regular physical activity will ensure that the dog maintains its muscle mass and controls its weight. The condition of the teeth and the coat should also be monitored.
In terms of energy requirements, intake should be adapted to the animal’s activity level, which depends on its age and any health concerns. An arthritic dog will move around less and so expend less energy, putting it at risk of unhealthy weight gain. A low energy diet is only imperative if the dog is overweight. It is very important not to simply assume that reduced enthusiasm for physical exercise is a normal consequence of ageing. The dog must be examined to check whether it is suffering from a disease.
Regular weighing and medical check-ups are the best way to ensure ageing-related problems are detected at the earliest opportunity.
VET
Nutrition for ageing dogs
Ageing is also accompanied by the modification of digestive capacities and particular nutritional requirements, so food for ageing dogs should have the following characteristics:
• Higher vitamin C and E content
These nutrients have antioxidant properties, protecting the body’s against the harmful effects of the oxidative stress linked to ageing.
• High-quality protein
Older dogs are less effective at using dietary protein than younger dogs due to their reduced digestive function. Improving protein quality is the main goal here. A fallacy in some countries is that protein is responsible for kidney failure. In fact, this is not the case. Kidney failure is a chronic, irreversible disease which is frequent with age. It’s recommended to reduce phosphorus content in foods to slow down the progression of this disease. However, it’s important to first speak to your vet and allow them to diagnose the condition before making any dietary changes.
• Higher proportion of the elements iron, copper, zinc and manganese
These nutrients help to maintain the good condition of the skin and coat. Their inclusion in the form of organic salts, which are much easier to assimilate than mineral salts, makes it more likely that they will be used in the metabolism of dogs with a less effective digestive system.
• Higher quantity of polyunsaturated fatty acids
Soy oil or, even better, borage oil, or fish oil are also used to maintain the quality of the coat. Dogs normally produce these fatty acids, but ageing can affect this physiological process.
• Slightly higher fibre content to act as “ballast”
Including a higher fibre content will help limit the risk of constipation, which can accompany the reduction in the ageing dog’s physical activity.
As they age, dogs increasingly suffer from dental problems. To ensure they continue to eat in sufficient quantities, the shape, size and hardness of their kibbles should be taken into consideration.
PART 3 ~ Food for ageing dogs
A dog that reaches three quarters of its expected lifespan is regarded as an ageing dog. The signs of ageing will start to become more and more apparent when a dog reaches a certain age. The signs may be more obvious at 12 years for small dogs, 10 years for a medium-sized dog and 8 years for a large dog.
Dietary measures to help combat the signs of ageing need to be intensified when dogs enter this life stage. This will help them stay healthy for as long as possible. The following factors are especially important:
• Improving immunity and increasing resistance to infection
There are several nutrients, including beta-caroten, vitamins E and C, and minerals such as zinc, that have been seen to help support a healthy immune system, which is weaker in ageing dogs.
• Improving the beauty of skin and coat
The health and beauty of the skin and hair is dependant on the adequate and regular intake of specific substances. Borage oil has a positive effect on the sheen of the hair and the elasticity of the skin. Zinc is recommended for ageing dogs with a coat in poor conditions.
• Alleviating arthritis
Glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate and EPA/DHA are nutrients that help to increase mobility in ageing dogs. Some newer diets have now been developed, involving curcuma extract, polyphenols and hydrolysed collagen, and have proven to be efficient in helping to improve mobility and quality of life for ageing dogs.
With all this said, ageing dogs are not all the same. A healthy ageing dog should not be on the same diet as an ageing dog with health issues.
Regular check-ups and health screens will ensure that any health problems are detected at the earliest opportunity. In many cases, diet can play a role in preventing or at least limiting the expression of the clinical symptoms of chronic disease in ageing dogs. Your vet will be able to recommend the most appropriate food.
PART 4 ~ How should I care for my ageing dog?
Your ageing dog needs specific care now it may be suffering from joint, dental, heart or renal issues. Learn about how to exercise, feed and look after your ageing dog here.
As your dog gets older, you’ll start to notice physical and behavioural changes which should be addressed if you want your dog to continue to have a good quality of life. There are simple ways you can do this, from their exercise to their diet.
How breed and size affect ageing
Not all dogs have the same life expectancy; this is dependent on genetics, lifestyle, breed and size. Smaller dogs, those under 10 kilos, live for around 12 years, while larger dogs over 45 kilos in weight tend to live for around seven to eight years. The ageing process also starts earlier in larger dogs and therefore each dog can be considered senior at a different age.
Each breed and size of dog has specific age-related problems. For example, small dogs often suffer heart issues. Your dog’s diet should take these differences into account and provide them with the specific combination of nutrients to support their health challenges.
Avoiding stress in your ageing dog
One of the most important considerations when altering your dog’s routine is to not cause them unnecessary stress. As dogs age, they can exhibit behavioural changes like incontinence, changes in sleep habits, and decreased interaction with owners. Abrupt or rapid changes to their routine can exacerbate these problems, so be sure to phase any adjustments in gradually.
Exercising your ageing dog
Cardiovascular issues can begin to affect older dogs, reducing their cardiac output. Their level of activity needs to match this reduced capability, otherwise it may result in heart difficulties.
Osteoarthritis and joint problems are common in ageing dogs, and can be made worse if your dog is overweight. You may wish to install a ramp if your dog is struggling to climb certain stairs, or carpet if it is struggling to remain steady on tiled or wooden floors. Swimming is excellent exercise for older dogs who may have joint problems.
Your ageing dog’s diet
Your dog’s ability to smell and taste can be reduced as they get older; make sure to keep toxic foods or substances out of their reach, just in case.
Energy requirements of older dogs are around 10%20% less than younger dogs, so you can adapt their meal sizes to avoid any unnecessary weight gain. Feed which is lower in fat yet still highly palatable are a good choice for older dogs as it encourages them to eat while avoiding overconsumption.
Your ageing dog’s food should also include specific nutrients to support its health during the ageing process, such as:
• Long chain omega 3 fatty acids, which can support healthy heart function
• A selection of active nutrients with demonstrated benefits joint health
• Reduced phosphorus levels to support effective kidney function
The health of your ageing dog
Regular health checks are a key way of spotting age-related diseases early on and providing the best care possible for your dog. You can also keep your dog healthy at home through regular teeth-brushing to avoid the build up of plaque which can lead to gingivitis bathing and grooming.
Some symptoms which may appear to be simply signs of ‘getting older’ can be indicators of underlying illness, so it’s important to consult your vet if you notice your dog’s appearance or behaviour changing; they’ll be happy to advise you on the best course of action.

How Stella Learned to Talk
An incredible, revolutionary true story, and a surprisingly simple guide to teaching your dog to talk, from speech-language pathologist
Christine Hunger, who has taught her dog Stella, to communicate using paw-sized buttons associated with different words.
When speech-language pathologist Christina Hunger
first came home with her puppy, Stella, it didn’t take long for her to start drawing connections between her job and her new pet.
During the day, she with worked with toddlers with significant delays in speech development and used
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices to help them communicate.
At night she wondered: if dogs can understand words we say to them, shouldn’t they be able to say words to us? Can dogs use AAC to communicate with humans?
Christina decided to put this to the test with Stella and started using a paw-sized button, programmed with her voice to say the word ‘outside’ when clicked, whenever she took Stella out of the house. Stella now has a bank of more than thirty word buttons, and uses them either individually or together to create near-complete sentences.
The book is part memoir and part how-to guide. It chronicles the journey Christina and Stella have taken together from the day they met to the day Stella ‘spoke’ her first word, and the other breakthroughs they’ve had since. It also reveals the techniques Christina used to teach Stella, broken down into simple stages and actionable steps any dog owner can use to start communicating with their pets.

NOTICE TO ADVERTISERS
The Competition and Consumer Act came into force
on 19 April 2011. Certain provisions of the Act relating to consumer protection place a heavy burden upon advertisers, advertising agents and the publishers of advertisements. In view of the obvious impossibility of our ensuring that advertisements submitted for publication comply with the Act, advertisers themselves need to ensure that the provisions of the Act are strictly complied with. Advertisers are warned that it is their responsibility to be able to substantiate any statements or claims made in advertisements. In cases of doubt, advertisers are asked to seek legal advice before submitting advertising material.
DISPUTES
From time to time, members refer to DOGS NSW matters in which it is not appropriate for our organisation to become involved. For example, disputes between members in relation to the sale of dogs. These are usually private matters to be determined by the contractual agreements between parties. Disputes on such matters should be resolved by the courts and not by DOGS NSW. Members are
requested to refrain from referring such matters to DOGS NSW. They are issues of a private or domestic nature and should properly be resolved by the courts or the Department of Fair Trading.
