By now the DPI Public Consultation Draft Bill (Animal Welfare Bill 2022) will have been completed. Submissions closed on 28 February 2022. We need to unite positively with our approach and each of us needs to take some active part in the issues. The amount of time spent on facebook pages by some members could be actively spent on emails to MPs and members of your local and state government.
We are now well on the way gaining momentum against the Animal Justice Party (Emma Hurst Puppy Farming) Bill.
Attached below is the scientific information forwarded to DOGS NSW from Professor Claire Wade. I would like to thank Professor Wade for allowing DOGS NSW to reprint her professional facts regarding the Animal Justice Party Bill:
The following changes to companion animal breeding rules are proposed:
61ZF Proprietors of companion animal breeding businesses must not breed dogs or cats in certain circumstances.
A proprietor of a companion animal breeding business must not breed from a female dog or cat in the following circumstances—
(a) more than twice, (b) if a heritable defect is identified in a previous litter of the dog or cat, (c) with a dog or cat that is related to the dog or cat by blood.
Maximum penalty—
(a) for a corporation—2,000 penalty units, (b) for an individual—400 penalty units or imprisonment for 1 year, or both.
Response:
The animal welfare justifications for the proposed changes are absent or unclear. There is no scientific support for the suggested changes.
Part (a): The rationale for the metric of two breedings is unclear or unjustified. There is no scientific evidence to suggest that negative welfare outcomes ensue from breeding an animal more than twice or even more than any particular number times if the animal is otherwise assessed as being in good health. There is no welfare or other justifiable reason why an animal assessed as fit by their veterinarian should not be bred.
Part (b): The definition of a heritable defect is absent or unclear. For Mendelian recessive conditions, simply breeding the animal with a partner from a different genetic background will minimize the chances of re-occurrence. Indeed, the imposition of such a requirement is far more likely to generate negative genetic outcomes from a population perspective by severely restricting the effective population size of the breeding population. This will do far more genetic harm than good. Most modern companion animal breeders actively participate in research to provide new genetic tests for Mendelian conditions where these do not already exist and actively apply genetic testing to minimize or eliminate the occurrence of Mendelian inherited defects in progeny.
For complex traits, such as orthopaedic traits or cancer, the proposed limit is unlikely to make any substantive impact on the occurrence of disorders in progeny.
Part (c): The definition of “related by blood” is unquantifiable. If this same requirement was imposed upon humans, then many cultures would be subjected to genocide.
The breaches would be impossible to prove and very severe. The legal battles that would ensue from attempting to enforce the breaches would place unnecessary stress on the court system and create serious mental health issues for the humans who love their animals. No part of the proposed Bill is either justifiable or desirable from any perspective, and particularly not from an animal welfare or animal genetic health perspective.
*Please Note: Members must continue to lobby their State members with letters, copies of our media releases and forward information, such as from Professor Claire Wade. The Select Committee into the Companion Animals Amendment (Puppy Farms) Bill 2021 has opened an online survey questionnaire that all members should take the time to complete: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GD9CK89
Responses are due by 6 March 2022.
Also consider the petition site Change.org which can generate larger numbers as this can be used to have signatures of your puppy owners and those who support our companion animals.

The recent heat and intermittent rain, has created perfect damp conditions for our deadly Australian funnel-web spider to thrive, warns the Australian Reptile Park. This recent warning means that there will be more numbers out and about, so beware. As the park is the sole supplier of funnel-web spider venom, which creates lifesaving antivenom, it’s important for Australians to know how to safely catch these creatures in order for the park to milk them and save lives.

The Borzoi Club of NSW have submitted a wonderful story for this edition, which outlines the mid December rescue of six Borzoi cross puppies from a dreadful hoarding situation. This occurred after the Central Coast Animal Care Facility negotiated their surrender from the owner. The story outlines each of the dogs’ progress; the veterinary care, food, cleaning, grooming and socialisation, both in words and pictorially. Thanks to the wonderful contributions Australia wide, the Club’s rescue operation was a great success and the results speak for themselves as six healthy, happy pups can now be rehomed and be part of loving and nurturing environments. Congratulations to Ros Barden and the Borzoi Club of NSW for wonderful work! The article commences on page 9.
DOGS NSW Library & Archives Committee once again held their Australia Day Show with near perfect conditions with Queensland Judge, Mr William Smith residing over General Specials. For more details of the day’s proceedings please turn to page 12.
The Pet Professional Guild Australia have granted permission for us to reprint their article ‘The Proper Use of Food in Dog Training,’ an informative guide with some commonsense advice including the difference between a bribe and a reward. The article answers some fundamental questions about training, the correct way to use food and the importance of positive reinforcement. To read more please turn to page 20.
Dr Bruce Robertson BVSc has been conducting the ACES monthly Eye Clinics at Orchard Hills for quite some time now, as a supported service to DOGS NSW members. He is expecting to retire in July this year and we have included his last five dates from March to June inclusive on page 22, together with details on the clinics and how to book. We wish Bruce all the best in his retirement.
As we are now getting out and about a little more and the weather is cooling down, what better way to enjoy your dogs than taking off with your caravan, or camping and spending some quality time in the great outdoors with them. Kerry Martin has travelled extensively in Australia and is an expert on the dos and don’ts of caravanning and camping with dogs. Her article is featured from page 24 and includes lovely images by Puppy Tales Photography of her two dogs having relaxing and fun times at different locations.
The breed spotlight for this month is the extroverted toy breed, the Havanese. With a lively, affectionate and somewhat clownish personality the Havanese will certainly captivate owners, as it is affectionate, loves to be the centre of attention and is equally happy with lots of activities or curling up on your lap. To read more about this endearing breed please turn to page 16.
The winner of six month’s supply of NexGard SPECTRA from January magazine’s competition was Belinda Beves. Congratulations to Belinda!
ChristofiRecent wet weather conditions will bring an increase in the amount of funnel web spiders around Sydney, warns the Australian Reptile Park.
The recent rains and weather this summer will create perfect conditions for funnel-web spiders to thrive, with male funnelwebs set to be leaving their burrows in search of a mate, sometimes ending up in houses or residential gardens.
Sam Herrmann, Reptiles and Spider keeper, said the public must remain vigilant, aware and safe when dealing with funnel-web spiders.
“Summer is funnel-web season and with the recent rain brings conditions where funnel web spiders thrive, so now is the time people will be seeing funnel-webs more and more. We need the public to assist us with bringing funnel-web spiders to the Australian Reptile Park.”
The Australian Reptile Park on the New South Wales Central Coast is the sole supplier of funnel-web spider venom, which creates lifesaving antivenom. Since pioneering the program in 1981, nobody has died from a funnel-web spider bite.
“It’s important that Australians know how to safely catch the spiders so that we can continue to milk them and save lives. We rely on public donations of funnel-web spiders to build up our milking individuals. The last couple of years has seen decreasing amounts of funnel-web hand-ins to The Australian Reptile Park, despite good exposure and community awareness.
Herrmann said the spiders prefer cool, damp places like the laundry or garage, or in shoes left outside. “It is best to ensure you are not leaving washing and clothing on the floors. If you leave your shoes outside make sure you give them a tap on the ground before putting your foot in blindly, as shoes can be the perfect little burrow for funnel-webs. Pool filters should also be checked and cleaned regularly.”
As specialists in funnel-web behaviour, Australian Reptile Park staff recommend that residents in areas that have a high number of funnel-web spiders have a compression bandage in their house readily available, should someone be bitten. “If bitten, a pressure immobilisation bandage should be wrapped firmly around the bite area and the limb and medical assistance sought immediately,” added Mr Rumsey.
“We’re encouraging residents of NSW to not kill funnel-web spiders that they come across, but rather follow our safety guidelines online to capture the spider (https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/questions/funnel-web-spidercollection/) and hand them in at the park or a participating drop-off centre. We also recommend a capture kit be kept, including a glass jar with air holes in the lid and a plastic ruler to guide the spider into the jar for collection.”

11 December 2021: A post appears on Facebook....
Central Coast Animal Care Facility have negotiated the surrender of a large number of dogs from a dreadful hoarding situation and some of them are possibly Borzoi. A Committee member of the Borzoi Club of New South Wales brought the post to the rest of the Committee’s attention. We unanimously decided “If they are Borzoi, we must help!” and contact was made with the rescuers.
Six puppies aged around 16 weeks that we knew of, but no idea if any adults. This would be the first opportunity to make use of the Club’s Health, Welfare and Rescue Fund approved at our last Club AGM in September 2021.
13 December 2021: Our Club President Ros Barden goes to collect the puppies from the shelter where they are being held… but there is a problem. They are Borzoi crosses (most likely with Siberian Huskies) and there are five of them.
Do we as a Breed Club still assist? Of course we do! Some clubs may have thought twice, but the Committee agreed that if they have any Borzoi in them, then we have a responsibility to ensure they are desexed and rehomed appropriately.
So after a visit to the vets for a check-up, worming, vaccination and microchipping, the smelly, dirty and underweight puppies went home with Ros to their new quarantine quarters. Just in time for another bath and nail trim, which they were NOT impressed with; but they were rewarded with yummy food (quality kibble, chicken frames and feet, meaty bones and mince) and full tummies.

Welcome to the start of your new lives Rose, Tiny, Little Boy, The Ambassador and The Princess.

As word went out on Social Media about the pups, donations of funds, food and assistance came in from around Australia and internationally as well. Particular thanks to members of the Whippet Club of NSW for spreading the word and for their donations; Kay Sneath for her ongoing donations of Royal Canin puppy kibble; and donations from members of the Borzoi Clubs of Victoria and Queensland and so many others. Also coming in were the adoption enquiries, at least 2 dozen – more than we could ever have expected.
Then just before Christmas: news of another Borzoi mix puppy girl came through. Again, surrendered by the same hoarder – a black and white girl, just a little bit older. Unfortunately also came the news that no adult Borzoi were found on the property this second time. Without a thought Ros agreed to take her in as well – welcome Eve.
Since Christmas: several have been desexed and all pups have grown stronger, fatter, healthier and fluffier. Most have learnt manners and how to play and have cuddles, while others are still a work in progress. Three have gone to their wonderful new homes (The Princess -now known as Inka; The Ambassador – now known as Wilbur; and Eve – now known as Freya) and Little Boy (now known as Mookie) will be leaving soon.
Those that have left have all adjusted to their new homes and lives wonderfully, and are enjoying sleeping inside on or next to their owners’ beds, going for walks and socialising with new dogs and people. Mookie has met his new family and loved them at first sight. The remaining two pups (Rose and Tiny) are still needing a little more time to adjust, but we are sure with Ros’ and her husband Greg’s loving care and tireless work they will find the perfect home soon.
All photos (pages 10 & 11) taken by Ros Barden.

Our Australia Day show had good weather, if a little humid, along with pleasing exhibitor numbers.
This was our first show with stewards using tablets instead of the usual stewarding sheets, which was a great innovation by entry providers. This was embraced by stewards and all concerned.
The new judges training scheme is about to commence, so, in addition to our 7 stewards, we also had 7 trainees. Hopefully they enjoyed the experience and will continue to steward after their compulsory 6 appointments.
Royal Canin continued their sponsorship with a generous donation of food. Lyn Brand also donated the ever popular “Delete” for all classes in show and our ribbon supplier, AT Ribbons, donated our Best in Show ribbon. Our best dressed gazebo winner received a lovely cash prize from a very special anonymous donor - thank you. In addition, thank you to Sue Ford who came and held the Australian flag for the special photos on the day (and wore the flag as well), and to Lyn Mansfield who provided the flag for the day.
Our panel of NSW judges did a great job and it was a pleasure to see their selections come into the General Specials ring to Mr Bill Smith from Queensland.
Thank you to Barbara Killworth for photography on the day and to all those who helped our show to be a success.

Whether they’re a dog with stiff joints, or a bouncy pup growing into a healthy and happy dog, supplements are so beneficial for a pet’s health and wellbeing. Yet, two thirds of Australian dog owners don’t supplement their pets’ diets and almost half of us don’t realise that supplements can benefit a dog’s health.
Travelling with a dog means that everywhere you stop you are not only thinking of where to eat and what to see, but trying to understand where you can take your dog too: dog friendly attractions, dog parks, dog beaches, dog friendly cafes and bars.
This book helps you navigate your trip and be prepared before you go, or while on the road.
New Australian dog supplement brand, ZamiPet - aims to change that. The new range launched into specialty pet stores in 2021 and helps dogs get back their ‘ZamiZip.’
ZamiPet provides essential vitamins and minerals commonly lacking in dogs’ diets today, while also helping pets with health challenges, such as joint stiffness, reoccurring urinary tract infection and signs of stress and anxiety.
Total: $180
The book is filled with tips from previous travellers, with a list of places to visit along with camping, caravan and hotels that are available for you to take your fur child.
Total: $135
Also included are the rules and regulations that come with having a pet on the road. Read how to work within these rules so your holiday is just as rewarding with your dog on the road with you.
To celebrate their launch, ZamiPet are giving away their product to 3 lucky dog owners! Prize packs are as follows:
New Year, New Me Bundle - $180 value

The purebred Havanese is a member of the Bichon family, which includes the Bichon Frise, Maltese and Lowchen.
The Havanese is the national dog of Cuba, developed from the now extinct Blanquito de la Habana. The Blanquito descended from the also now extinct Bichon Tenerife. It is believed that the Blanquito was eventually cross-bred with other Bichon types, including the Poodle, to create what is now known as the Havanese. Sometimes referred to as “Havana Silk Dogs,” this was originally another name for the Blanquito de la Habana.
The breed comes from the Western Mediterranean region and has developed along the Spanish and Italian coastal region. These dogs were imported early in Cuba by ocean navigating Italian captains. Erroneously, the most frequent brown colour of these dogs (tobacco) gave birth to the legend which would mean it to be a breed originating from Havana, capital of Cuba. The political events, however, have led to the total disappearance of the old blood lines of the Havanese in Cuba; apparently a few dogs would be successfully smuggled out from Cuba; their descendents have survived in the U.S.A.1.
The Havanese is a sturdy, small, longhaired, drop-eared companion dog, measuring 21-29cm tall, and is covered with a long, ideally wavy, untrimmed coat.
The breed’s plumed tail is carried over its back and it has a lively, springy gait. While the tail’s long plume of hair falls over the body, the tail itself should never touch the back.
The Havanese has large dark almond shaped eyes, with a gentle expression, and is bred in a great variety of colours, patterns and markings. In the show ring, the breed should be presented as natural as possible: while consistent with good grooming. The breed should never appear trimmed, except for feet and hygienic trimming.
A happy temperament and energetic outlook on life makes the Havanese an entertaining companion. The Havanese is a small dog, equally at home actively playing or snuggling on a lap. It is an intelligent and affectionate breed and is always happy to be the centre of attention. The breed thrives on human companionship, plays well with children, other dogs of all sizes and also cats.
One first notices the breed’s animated face with dancing eyes and an expression filled with mischief. This look is almost always accompanied by an endearing head tip, the head being cocked to one side. The Havanese often do this and it starts when it is a young puppy. 2.
Their small but sturdy bodies, adaptable nature and social skills make the Havanese an ideal city dog, but they are content to be anywhere that they can command the attention of admirers young and old alike. 2.
Havanese are smart and trainable extroverts with the comic instincts of a born clown, and are natural trick dogs. They are also excellent watchdogs and take the job seriously, but will usually keep the barking to a minimum. 2.
The breed is relatively quiet, but it can also be active both indoors and out. Even though the Havanese is small, it is not meant to be a tiny, fragile dog. It may be small in stature but it is muscular and lively with great stamina. The Havanese is an excellent jumper and many succeed at agility and other dog sports. While the breed excels in many pursuits, it is first and foremost a companion dog.
The Havanese is ideal for families with children of all ages, older people who like a happy and lively dog without being too small, and anyone who is happy to be beguiled by this active, happy breed.
Havanese are highly intelligent and eager to please, and they are easily trained, so long as you use only positive methods. This can be a sensitive breed, so care must be taken to not scold them harshly. Socialisation from an early age is very important. Expose them calmly to a wide variety of new places and people, always ensuring that the experiences are positive and not intimidating. Gentle, patient training will result in a wonderful companion dog. They are affectionate with people and get along with other nonaggressive pets. 2.
The Havanese should be fed a high-quality dog food appropriate to his age (puppy, adult or senior). Some Havanese can be prone to getting overweight, so watch your dog’s calorie consumption and weight level. If you choose to give your dog treats, do so in moderation. Treats can be an important aid in training, but giving too many can cause obesity. 2.
While some health conditions can occur, the Havanese remains a relatively healthy breed with a life expectancy of approximately 12 to 15 years. The majority of Havanese experience few significant health issues. Dedicated breeders health test hips and elbows, eyes, patellar luxation and cardiac.
All breeds have inheritable disorders, some are more serious and widespread, others much more limited in their occurrence. Ongoing research and proper health screening may help reduce health issues in the breed for future generations.
The Havanese is a non-shedding, hypoallergenic dog, although it will lose some coat in the brush, when it rubs against furniture and in its bedding. Minimal shedding, however, does not mean no maintenance. As most of the dead hair stays within the strands of the new coat, matting is common so regular daily grooming is required. If the coat is to be left its natural length, weekly grooming will be required, which is not a hardship but a bonding time with your Havanese. Show dogs command daily brushing to keep the beautiful coat in healthy condition.
This can be done by gently running a comb or soft brush over the dog while he is on your lap. Pet owners often choose to have their dog’s coat clipped to a short trim to reduce grooming time. The Havanese should also be bathed occasionally as needed. The corners of the eyes should be gently cleaned daily to prevent tear-stain of the lighter-colored hair in the area. Check the ears often to remove excess wax or accumulated debris and wipe out the inside of the ear-flap with a slightly moistened gauze or paper towel.2.
The Havanese has moderate exercise needs. They will benefit from a brisk daily walk or a fun playtime with their owner in the backyard, as they are happiest when someone is with them. Romping inside the home can also provide enough activity. Never over-exercise a Havanese of any age. If they are panting and struggling to keep up, it is time to go home. Havanese do well in both houses and apartments, but they are not happy left alone for hours at a time. 2.

Surely if I ask my dog to do something he should just do it? Dogs are thinking, feeling, intelligent creatures. Though they are not little people in fur suits, like us they will do things that are fun and rewarding and avoid things that are not. Asking your dog to do something ‘just because you said so’ is like your boss asking you to work for no pay. How motivated would you be to do it? You could force your dog to comply, but what would that do to your relationship? How would you feel about somebody who forced you to work? On the other hand, if you set up the game that your dog understands as “If I do what you want, you’ll give me a treat,” it’s a relationship building win-win situation. The dog is motivated to learn and both of you can enjoy the training session. You love your dog, so why wouldn’t you want to use a training “tool” that gets him excited and makes him happy?
Why does my dog only listen to me when I have a piece of hot-dog in my hand?
Dogs are so intelligent that they don’t only learn what we WANT to teach them - they also read between the lines and learn things we don’t mean to teach them! So if you start off with that piece of hot dog waving under his nose as you train him, he will expect to see and/or smell that piece of hot dog every time. This is a common complaint in food training, and there’s an easy fix. Simply make sure that you use the following steps:
1. Cue the behaviour
2. MARK the behaviour (with a clicker or word, to let the dog know “that is the right answer and a reward is coming”), and only then
3. Reach for the treat. If the treat always appears after the behaviour, the dog will learn that he doesn’t need to see or smell it ahead of time to earn it.
First of all, there is a difference between a bribe and a reward. The bribe comes first, before the behaviour; the reward comes after the behaviour. It’s an important distinction, because “bribing” is not an effective way to train, but rewarding/reinforcing is. If you bribe, your dog will only perform the behaviour if there’s a piece of food in front of him first. If you reward, then your dog will perform the behaviour in hopes of earning that piece of food. And after the learning phase, when that behaviour is fluent you can start to phase out the food rewards.
For example, if you are teaching your dog to sit on cue, you would start off by reinforcing every sit with a piece of food. At some point that behaviour will become so familiar and easy to your dog that when you say “sit,” he will do it without thinking. When he is that good at sitting on cue, you can reward him with food sometimes but not every time. Then you may be able to substitute praise (good dog!) or what is called a life reward. If he wants you to open the door so he can go out into a fenced yard, he can “earn” that by sitting at the door. Or if you ask him to sit before you put his food bowl down, that is also a life reward.
Basically the food is a training tool and will not be required forever. But also keep in mind that nobody goes to one maths class and comes out able to solve algebraic equations! Give your dog a lot of practice in a lot of different contexts before deciding that he “knows” how to do something.
How do I ensure that I don’t have to bribe my dog forever when I would like him to do something?
Whatever amount you put into your dog for training during the day, you must deduct from his dish at dinner time. If you stuff your dog full of treats all day long, and then feed him his regular meals, he just may get fat! Treats are wonderful, and powerful treats (like hot dogs, cheese and peanut butter) may be necessary when you’re training a difficult behaviour, or in a difficult environment with a lot of distractions. Other than that, you have a great resource for training in that bowl you fill up twice a day. Instead of just putting the bowl down and letting him eat it all at once, use a portion of it for training. Some trainers give their dogs their entire daily ration in training sessions throughout the day.
Also note that dogs don’t really work for the taste of food, they work for the smell. If you use very tiny pieces of food, they will be just as happy to work for them as if you offer a big chunk. Treats can be broken into pieces smaller than a pea, and maybe 1/4 of a pea for tiny dogs. When I use string cheese, I smear just a tiny bit on my finger and offer a lick.
If my dog will not work for food, then how can a positive reinforcement trainer help me train my dog?
Positive reinforcement training isn’t about food, it’s about whatever your dog likes well enough to want to work to earn it. The reason we use food most often is because:
1. most dogs love to eat, and 2. food is easy to work with.
But there are many dogs who work for a tossed ball or a tug on a rope.
At what point do I stop using the food to train?
When you are comfortable that your dog will perform the behaviour anywhere, under any circumstances, then you do not need to use food to train that behaviour any longer.
Remember, if you were using a training method such as collar corrections, this question would read “at what point do I stop correcting my dog,” and the answer would be the same. Both methods use motivation. You choose if you want to motivate your dog with something he likes and will work to attain, or something he dislikes and will work to avoid.
My dog will do sit and down in my house, but when I take him outside to the park I have to bribe him again. Why does this happen?
Again, you don’t take a beginner’s maths class and solve algebraic problems. You don’t take skiing lessons on bunny slopes and then tackle the Swiss Alps. Learning comes in steps. Your house is a Nursery School environment for your dog. It’s the easiest learning environment, with the least amount of distractions. Out in the back yard may be a Kindergarten level environment, because now there are butterflies to chase and the sounds of neighbours. In the front yard you may be moving into Middle School, because now your dog can see people, other dogs, and moving cars. The park is going to be Graduate School, one of the most difficult environments in which to learn because there is so much going on that is competing for his attention.
One of the big differences between dogs and humans and the way we learn is the ability to generalise. If your father teaches you how to change a tyre in your garage, you can probably figure out how to change a tyre in any other environment as well. But if a dog could be taught to change a tyre, he would be more likely to get confused if the car was any where but in the garage where he learned the skill. We have to purposely work at helping the dog learn to generalise each new behaviour. So when you teach him to sit, you need to teach him to sit in the house, in the yard, at the park, when a plane is trav elling overhead, etc. Each new set of circumstances is a new level of difficulty for your dog.
Positive reinforcement is one of the four “quadrants” of behaviour modification. In the simplest of terms, positive means to add something and reinforcement means to encourage or strengthen a behaviour. So when training your dog you want to build new and appropriate behaviours. The most efficient and effective way to do that is to provide something pleasant to your dog when he exhibits a behaviour you like. This reinforcement can be anything your dog wants access to, a walk, its food, a toy or your attention.

Travelling, whether it be camping in a tent or with a caravan, is THE best kind of travel.
To whet your appetite for em-bark-ing on your own dog inclusive caravan or camping adventure, here are just some of the reasons why:
Dogs are the most agreeable travel companions
Nothing you want to do on holiday will ever be a bad idea to your dog. Camping out under the stars? Woof! A scenic hike? Woof! A swim at the beach? Woof, woof, woof!
You’ll see and explore more!
With caravanning or camping, you’re more likely to get off the beaten track and more likely to explore by foot with your canine companion.
Dogs make things more fun!
The joy that they approach any new experience with is contagious, and so much fun to see. More laughter and more play are guaranteed.
You go places you otherwise wouldn’t.
Your dog will take you on unexpected detours. Marvelling at the night sky on a reluctant toilet break, stumbling across a rockpool on your morning walk. The compromises you make for your pooch can become the highlights of your trip.
It’s good for you!
Aside from the physical benefits of the activity together, spending time with your dog is good for your soul. Companionship, laughter, play and snuggles make us happier.
Now to make your caravanning or camping experience the best it possibly can be - the dos and don’ts!
If this is your dog’s first sleep under canvas or in the van, do a dry run first. Set up ‘camp’ in the backyard and spend a night under the stars to see if they’re a natural camper, or what assistance or training they may need to make your trip a success.
Search out the paw-fect campsite. Check out any restrictions and if additional fees apply for dogs. It also won’t hurt to look for dog-friendly attractions in the area.
Get your dog accustomed to their travel bed, or sleeping bag, in the comfort of your own home, so that it’s nicely reassuring when on the road.
Make sure your canine companions are in good health and are properly and regularly treated against parasites such as fleas.
Ensure your dog is microchipped and the details up to date. If your phone is likely to be out of range, then make sure there’s a second number which can be reached.
Take along enough dog food for the trip and then some spare. In the event of an unplanned delay, you need to be sure the dog is catered for.
Pack a waterproof tarp or mat to protect the dog from damp ground and give comfort during rest periods.
Before setting off, check any fire warnings and what weather to expect, so that you’re well prepared.
Assume everywhere is dog-friendly. Sadly, some caravan parks or campgrounds are off-limits to our dogs. Doing your homework first, rather than just rocking up, can save from being turned away, or having to stay somewhere that isn’t what you were looking for when travelling with your dog.
Think your dog only needs water, a handful of kibble and dry ground to sleep on. Your dog has needs, which it is your responsibility to meet at all times. Plan ahead for your pooch so that all bases are covered, no matter where you are.
Consider your dog’s comfort, especially on long journeys. Stop frequently to allow them to stretch their legs and relieve themselves.
Have a travel water bowl they can reach whilst in the car.
Secure any other cargo so that it doesn’t fall on to your dog.
Keep the temperature and speaker volume comfortable within the vehicle. If you can, turn off speakers to the area your dog is in and ensure there is airflow to that area from the air conditioner.
Consider using window screens in the summertime to help prevent direct hot sun on the dogs and therefore keep them cool.
Allow your dog to travel loose in your vehicle. In the event of an accident or breaking suddenly, they would become a missile flying forward. Look into a crash-test approved pod, harness, or crate to keep everyone safe on your travels to and from your destination.
Leave your dog unattended in your vehicle on a hot day for any length of time. Dogs die in hot cars in frighteningly short amounts of time.
Allow your dog to travel in the front passenger seat - the impact on a dog of the airbag expanding is enough to break their neck or kill them.
Play by the ‘rules’. They are there to help ensure the safety, comfort and enjoyment of all visitors.
Ensure you have a sturdy collar and leash. They are essential for walks and at the campsite. In fact, if your dog loves swimming, make that two - a second collar for them to wear whilst the first one dries.
Observe basics for your dog's welfare such as making sure they are secure at all times, providing fresh water, ensuring they have a place in the shade and out of the direct sun, and daily checks for ticks, nicks or cuts.
Know the location of the nearest vet, just in case.
Allow your dog to wander loose around your site. This is for their safety and also the comfort and enjoyment of fellow travellers in the area. Consider taking a long line to give them that bit more freedom where space allows. Another invaluable aid is a stake for the ground, or for a little extra freedom, a zipline.
Rely on finding a stream or water source at the campsite for your dog’s drinking water. Remember, not all water is safe to drink, and if it's not recommended that you drink the water, then neither should the dog. Take water along, more than you anticipate needing.
Allow your dog to bark unchecked. It's irritating to those trying to enjoy the serenity.
Leave your dog unattended on campsites. It may be too hot, or otherwise unpleasant for them. There is also the potential risk to the dog's own safety from predatory wild animals, who will find a tethered dog easy pickings.
Take along a couple of towels, specifically for the dog to use. If they don't get muddy, or jump in a lake, you may need to towel them down after rain.
Pack a few of your dog’s favourites toys, or long-lasting chews, so that they have something do while you’re chilling out around the campsite.
Pack your dog first aid kit. Being outdoors exposes them to a greater risk of cut pads, insect bites, or small cuts, so have the necessary disinfectants and bandages on board with you.
Forget your dog's needs for exercise and mental stimulation every day, even though you might be relaxing on vacation.
Think being at one with nature is no excuse for not pooper scooping. Pack plenty of poop bags! Fouling the campsite is not only disgusting but it discourages people from opening their facilities to canine kind.
Overlook your dog's basic needs for a clean and tidy coat, even though you are away. Indeed, combing and brushing at the end of each day is a great way of checking for ticks, so that you can remove them immediately.
Have fun together!
Take plenty of photos of the special times you have together.
