We are continuing to work towards a more sensible solution to the “Puppy Audits”. As a self governing and self educating body, where the vast majority of us are hobby breeders of less that two litters per year, I feel the RSPCA is spending the Government’s money unwisely, and to a very large degree, unnecessarily.
The aim of this scheme was to sort out and come down hard on “puppy factories” to ensure good welfare outcomes. I have no problems with that, however, the requirements under the current Codes and, therefore of the Audit, means that Hobby breeders require 180cm fences, isolation facilities, etc, conditions that would be expected in commercial enterprises. Equally, the Government won’t allow most of us to claim any deductions on our incomes, as we are “hobby breeders”, so they can’t have it both ways!
I feel the whole system needs a thorough update and overhaul. There should be a clear distinction between a Puppy Audit and a welfare complaint and the paperwork should reflect this. There should be a clear list of requirements and paperwork freely available ahead of time. If there are substandard conditions and welfare issues found, then the visit turns into a welfare inspection.
While DOGS NSW breeders have to meet all these unrealistic requirements, when breeding 1-2 litters per year, working dogs have no restrictions at all. They do not have to comply with any Code, certainly not silly things such as fence heights, paperwork, and health testing rarely happens.
We are continuing to meet with various politicians and others to try and get these Codes updated. When the previously proposed update of the Codes were put forward, the expectations were totally unrealistic, to the point that when challenged, the Government removed them. Under that system, it all retaliated to commercial enterprises and expectations thereunder.
Somewhere sense should prevail between the two extremes of puppy farming and hobby breeding. Hobby breeders love their pets, and, if and when they breed, they breed in small numbers, usually for replacement. In our case, when DOGS NSW breeders breed, they breed under strict regulations with stringent health and welfare requirements. There should be room for the hobbyist without being drowned in unnecessary severe regulations.
The information that we are receiving is that most of our breeders are getting through the audits with ease, apart from the perennial fence height issue and paperwork. The majority of audits have been in rural areas, up to this time.
For our older members, do not be concerned if you only own a couple of older dogs that are desexed, or that you are not breeding with. No one is going to come near you. Only people that are currently breeding will be looked at. That said, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t breed, because, as noted above, the vast majority of us will pass with flying colours. The more we don’t breed, the more other organisations pick up the slack, due to our lack of production! So continue to breed with the normal care and attention to your litters, so that due to your efforts, those puppies will make healthy, well socialised and beloved pets for either yourself or a member of the public’s lifetime.
Remember: If the RSPCA does come visiting, you do have the right to say the time is not convenient and they will need to make an appointment to visit. Alternatively, you can ask them to wait until you have someone to support you during the audit. They then have to wait until that person arrives, or make an appointment when you are supported.

With many of our Members reaching their golden years, none are more golden than veteran members, Reg and Mary Young, who have been members since 21st November 1957. Reg had reason to celebrate this year, as he turned 100 years old on 10 January! To honour Reg and this milestone in his life, Dalmatian breeders Anne Brown and Dianne Wright have written a tribute to Reg and his involvement with the dog world, along with the history of his establishment of the original Showaquipment business, as a roving venture in “the bus.” There are some wonderful old photos, which will bring back some fond memories for some, along with a great nostalgic read. Congratulations Reg! To read the tribute to Reg, please turn to page 20.
As the 2021 Sydney Royal Dog Show gets set to proceed next month, we have some reminders and tips for members to help prepare for the event. Written by John Bryson, Chairman Domestic Animals RAS of NSW, the article commences on page 10 and also includes photos and names of the judging panel.
We have two interesting feature articles this month including “How to Crate Train Your Puppy,” written by puppy.com (commencing page 22) and Behavioural Problems and their solutions by Mike Powell from dogembassy.com, (commencing on page 26).
Also included in this edition is the latest results and images taken at the November 2020 competition for Dances with Dogs.
There are three news items this month, including the progress of an anti-cancer drug trial for dogs with B cell lymphoma, along with a call out for more participants; a new law introduced to protect pets from domestic violence; plus an online workshop event organised by International K9 Working Group against COVID-19, on the use of K9 units to detect COVID-19 cases.
This month’s breed feature is the Lowchen, a playful, active and affectionate toy breed, with a great aptitude for obedience and agility due to its love of new challenges, intelligence and happiness of joining activities with his people. The Lowchen’s coat is long and flowing and comes in many colours and does not shed. Due to the coat having very low allergic effects, they are considered a hypoallergenic breed. The spotlight feature on the Lowchen commences on page 16.
We were hoping to include coverage of the Australia Day Show in this issue, however, as the show was postponed to 21 February, due to the extreme weather conditions, coverage will be deferred to the April edition. Coverage of the Complex Fundraising Shows (Blue & White), held on 13 February, will also be included in the April edition.
The winner of the January ‘Clear Collective’ competition was Krystal Locke.
Winners of the “Travelling with Pets on Australia’s East Coast” Book Competition were: Kelly Gill, Angela Clark, Shane Sanger, Michelle Oldfield and Veronica Collins-Smith.
Kerry Kerry Christofito all winners!

The International K9 Working Group against COVID-19, organised a second online workshop event on the use of K9 units to detect COVID-19 cases with over 111 attendees from 27 countries. The event had expert speakers from the World Health Organisation, World Organisation for Animal Health and École Nationale Vétérinaire d’Alfort, as well as a number of international experts in the field of K9 detection.
Doctor Stephane de la Rocque, Team Leader Human Animal Interface, World Health Organisation spoke at the forum about global affairs and the uses of police dogs with their strong sense of smell to detect epidemics.
Professor Dominique Grandjean, professor at the École Nationale Vétérinaire d’Alfort, the main partner of the UAE Ministry of Interior in their K9 detection program, insisted that in order to ensure credibility and wider implementation of K9s, countries must continue to research, cross-trial information and publish findings.
Doctor Majid Sultan Al Qassimi, Regional Representative, World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) also spoke during the event.
The event continued with presentations from Australia, Brazil and Chile regarding their respective programs, their learnings and the challenges they faced. They walked through their methods of training the dogs, trial designs, the noninvasive screening approaches applied and implementation of programs at airports and shopping centres.
The overarching consensus was that the detection levels of COVID-19 by K9s was extremely promising, with dogs recognising certain nuances of the virus undetected by PCR testing. The dogs present an efficient, inexpensive, scalable and trustworthy method for COVID-19 diagnosis.
An open dialogue took place at the end of the forum in the form of a discussion in which a number of inquiries were answered and development proposals were made about the extent of the use of police dogs in enhancing preventive and precautionary efforts and measures to limit the spread of the COVID-19 and contribute to securing safety, preventing the spread of the disease and protecting society.
Present at the event were representatives from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Czech Republic, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Iceland, India, Ireland, Italy, Kuwait, Lebanon, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, The United Arab Emirates, The United Kingdom, The United States of America and Yemen.
The UAE Ministry of Interior, in partnership with the Ministry of Interior of France and the French National Veterinary School of Alfort, established an International K9 Working Group against COVID-19 following their joint operation in the implementation of a highly successful national K9 training program in the UAE.
The aims of the International K9 Working Group include the sharing of challenges faced, lessons learned, successes and the capabilities of each participating member, and the members are looking forward to future events. The remit of the network is vital at the moment as the international community progresses to understand the new ways in which we can deal with the COVID-19 virus as the world begins to open up.
Domestic violence victim-survivors and their companion animals will have greater protections under proposed Apprehended Domestic Violence Order (ADVO) reforms. Attorney General and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence Mark Speakman said animals are often used as an instrument of coercive control designed to torment victims.
“Perpetrators use animals to intimidate, retaliate against, and manipulate victims during the relationship and after separation, as punishment for leaving,” Mr Speakman said. “Animal abuse in domestic violence settings can also delay victims leaving violent situations for fear of having their companion animals left unprotected with perpetrators.”
The Government’s Bill, which was introduced in NSW Parliament late last year, will amend the Crimes (Domestic and Personal Violence) Act 2007 and expand the conditions of ADVOs. Currently, ADVOs have conditions that prohibit the defendant from harassing, stalking or intimidating the protected person, or from destroying or damaging their property or the property of anyone with whom they are in a domestic relationship. The reforms will change the definition of ‘intimidation’ to indicate explicitly that harm to, or harm threatened to, animals is a form of intimidation. The Bill will also ensure that the protection of animals will be a standard condition in all ADVOs.
“This is an important step that will make it easier to respond to this vile form of abuse that seeks to terrorise victims and their much-loved animals,” Mr Speakman said. While there are existing animal cruelty laws, this reform means if offences are committed in the context of a domestic relationship, with intent to coerce or control the victim, or cause intimidation or fear, they may be also charged as domestic violence offences.
Domestic Violence NSW Interim CEO Delia Donovan said the crucial changes announced today were welcomed by the organisation NSW’s peak body for specialist domestic violence services. “Feedback from frontline workers indicates that domestic violence victim-survivors often disclose that perpetrators have threatened to harm or kill animals,” Ms Donovan said. “Protecting animals from perpetrators will therefore continue to improve the safety of people experiencing domestic and family violence across NSW.”
In addition, the NSW Government has invested $500,000 in a one-off grants program for refuges and animal shelters to support companion animals when victims flee violent homes. Mr Speakman said refuges and animal shelters could begin applying to the Pets and Animal Welfare Support (PAWS) Grants Program this week. “These funds will enable refuges to become pet-friendly and to enhance the capacity of animal welfare services to provide temporary foster care for animals so women can leave violent homes without worrying their pet will be harmed,” Mr Speakman said.
The grant program funds formed part of the NSW and Commonwealth Government’s $21 million boost to frontline domestic violence services and other supports, during COVID-19.

Recent interpretations of the NSW Animal Welfare Code of Practice require that kennel owners have a minimum boundary fence height of 1.8 Metres.
Wireman makes a range of fencing tools and products with particular emphasis on using the existing fence and making the most of what you have. So you can raise your existing fence to meet the code at minimal cost, and really save on both material and labour.
Two products PickeX and Holdfast Harpoon can be used together to both raise the height of an existing fence and hold down the bottom wire. You can also repair any holes you may have in the fence.
PickeX Extensions simply slide over the top of a conventional STAR Picket without needing to remove the horizontal wires and raise the fence height by 600mm or 2 foot. PickeX are available in both galvanised steel (Starlet) and Recycled PVC). They can also be attached to timber posts using screws.
Holdfast Harpoon is a ground anchoring system to hold down wire. An applicator is used to hammer in a harpoon with lanyard close to the bottom wire of the fence. When the applicator is removed it sets the harpoon in the ground and the lanyard is simply wound around the bottom wire to prevent it being lifted.
Both products are home grown inventions wholly manufactured in Australia by Wireman.
Video of all the tools and equipment can be seen at wiremanhq.com and on the Wireman Facebook page or get in touch by emailing sales@wiremanhq.com
The Sydney Royal Easter Show will be held 1 April to 12 April 2021. General Specials is scheduled for Sunday 11 April 2021. Sydney Royal was voted Australia’s favourite Royal Show at the Dog News Australia Awards five times over the past six years. Organised and administered by the Domestic Animals Committee, the Show prides itself on only inviting Judges with outstanding reputations. As a result, the ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show is world renowned and attracts overseas visitors from all corners of the globe, as well as a strong, social media audience.
We will be holding Obedience trials in the morning, on the first day of the show, Thursday 1 April 2021, from 8:00am. Conformation classes will commence from Thursday 1 April 2021. There will be six Australian Judges on the panel for Conformation. This allows exhibits to be judged by more Group and Breed Specialists. As a result, Sydney Royal will be hosting Breed Specialties again. We encourage our Exhibitors to view the timetable to see what breeds we will be hosting. In 2021 Junior Handler Classes and Sweepstake Classes will be held on Saturday, 10 April 2021 and exciting Agility trials will be showcased on the last day of the Show, 12 April 2021.
Access to the SRES in 2021 will be subject to measures intended to assist in the COVIDSafe operation of the event. There will be more details in the Exhibitor manual that will be sent out to all Exhibitors closer to the Show.
We appreciate that the Show is normally a great place to network and discuss your breed with other like-minded people, however in 2021 we need to ensure social distancing of 1.5m is maintained at all times.
Plan ahead! Some Exhibitors like to pack their car the night before: remember your crates and trolleys, benching chains, water and food bowls, chairs, grooming gear and bedding for the bench. You will receive an exhibitor manual along with your instructions relating to tickets and passes. Please ensure you read the manual, as it holds lots of key information, such as bench sizes and directions to the pavilion. A board no larger
than 450mm x 150mm displaying the registered Kennel and/ or the dog’s name and the official prize cards and ribbons for the current Show, may be placed over the benches. You may bring business cards and flyers to give to the general public with information relating to your specific breed in the pavilion.
This is a fantastic opportunity to promote your breed to the visitors in the pavilion. Exhibitors should note that any prefix branded clothing is NOT to be worn outside the dog pavilion, in the judging rings or marshalling area. This includes jackets and vests, jewellery, wristbands and anything that displays a breeder’s prefix.
Please note that the pavilion does not open before 6.30am. Benching is any time between 6.30am and 9.00am. There is a drop off zone approximately 50 metres from the pavilion, from Gate 10. You can park in this area for up to ten minutes, drop off your dogs and equipment and then move your car to the car park.
Exhibitor parking will be located at P5B for all Exhibitors. P5A will not be accessible to Exhibitors for parking and no replacement tickets will be handed out if you enter the wrong parking lot. Due to COVID-19, NSW Health requires the RAS to ensure that every person scans a valid entry ticket when entering the Showground which will allow for contact tracing. Your bench number appears on your Bench Slip, Confirmation of Entry slip. Your Bench Slip will not allow access to the site, each person entering the site must scan a valid ticket to gain entry. You will have an extra ticket in your pack for the driver of your vehicle. Once they move the vehicle to the car park they will need a valid entry ticket to gain access to the site. There is a shuttle bus every 10 minutes from the car park that drops you off at Gate 9. Many exhibitors like to walk one or more of the dogs back with them to give them a bit of exercise before benching. The walk from the carpark is approximately 600m.
Your ticket(s) for the Show are valid for one day only and there will be more information in the Exhibitor manual about the process required to access your tickets. Cars must be moved to the designated exhibitor car park, once drop off is completed. Please note that under no condition are dogs to be left in cars or trailers in the car park. Temperatures can climb into the high 30s in the car
parks, which is fatal for dogs locked in vehicles. Security Staff will be patrolling and if any dogs are found to be in trailers or cars, Security Command, the Police, the RSPCA and the Domestic Animals Section will be notified and dogs will need to be removed from the precinct. This will be strictly enforced in 2021 and may result in exhibitors being refused entry to future Royal Shows.
We have experienced the helpful Sydney Royal Stewards who work to make sure exhibitors have a stress free day. Our Call Steward, will give early notification that breeds are ready to be judged. Please note, that if you are not at your bench you may miss the Call Steward’s announcement.
Power points are limited in the benching areas, but exhibitors are able to groom at their bench. Please be mindful of other breeds nearby. Please be aware that ALL exhibitors who attend the ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show are required to stay in the Pavilion until 5.00pm, unless otherwise instructed by the Chairman of the Domestic Animals Committee or Chief Steward, this includes Best in Show Day.
Due to the large number of breed entries that Sydney Royal receives, benching is programmed through the RAS computer system and is organised in alphabetical order per breed.
In breeds with large numbers, it is very difficult to move benching numbers, but if someone is willing to swap with you on the day, this can usually be arranged on your judging day. Breeds are benched according to the size of the dog. Please contact us if you have multiple breeds on the same day and we will do our best to accommodate you. Dogs at the benches must never be left unattended. While it is unlikely someone will attempt to steal your dog, there are other risks if you aren’t there. The dog could get caught on its lead by jumping off the bench and there is the risk of an altercation with another dog. To ensure the day runs smoothly we encourage exhibitors to have crates and trolleys at their benches, which will keep your dog secure. As long as other exhibitors can walk past your crates and trolleys, they can be in the benching area.
The bench area is restricted to exhibitors only. All valuable items including handbags, etc should be out of sight, or with you at all times. Exhibitors are asked to inform the Dog Office if they feel anyone is acting suspiciously or leaving items unattended. Lockers are located outside the Dog Pavilion and Howie Café to secure valuables if required. Our volunteers are located throughout the pavilion to assist, but in busy times they cannot be ‘everywhere’.
To protect the integrity of Australia’s largest dog show, the 2021 ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show will once again have random drug testing in operation. If your dog is undergoing any
treatment at all, please fill out a Treatment Notification Form (TNF) and submit it to the dog office as soon as possible. It must be submitted prior to 8.30am, on the day of showing.
There are a lot of prohibited substances that are tested for, some of which may be necessary for ongoing treatment of the dog and its welfare. If known in advance, the dog may be given permission to be exhibited by the Veterinary Committee, who examine these forms. However, if there is no treatment form submitted, and the dog is tested and found to be positive, it may result in disciplinary action.
The DOGS NSW ‘Meet the Breed’ stand is one of our feature exhibits. It is located on the commercial walk and as it is in a prime position, it is a great way to promote your breed. We ask that you help educate the general public on why your pedigreed and registered breed make great family pets. Please contact Kerry Christofi at DOGS NSW for more information on 9834 0217. There will be COVID-19 restrictions in place.
Our Commercial Stands will be available at the show again this year. If you visit the stands at the start of the day, before the crowds, you can have a chat with the commercial exhibitors. You’re sure to find something to buy!
2021 will see the lunchtime entertainment continue on the Howie Lawns. Also, the Pet Pavilion, located in Hall 3 on Riverina Avenue, will be activated for its fourth year, where we will showcase our other Domestic Animals Competitions (Cats, Rabbits, Aviary Birds, Rats and Mice, Cavies (Guinea Pigs) and Reptiles). Along with Industry related Commercial exhibits, there will also be a ”Feature a Pet” related entertainment arena, which will showcase Dog and Pet related entertainment.
Three traditional Grand Parades will be held in the main arena again in 2021. The first on Good Friday, 2nd April at 4:50pm, the second on Easter Sunday, 4th April at 4:35pm, and the final on Friday, 9th April at 4:30pm. These parades feature winning livestock from all the various competitions and dogs are included in this. If you would like to have a group of dogs in the Grand Parade, it is a great opportunity to promote your breed to thousands of show goers who eagerly anticipate this event. We encourage any clubs that have a breed being exhibited on these days and would like to participate to contact us for further details, there will be COVID restrictions in place.
The show is usually a great place to catch up with friends and talk to other exhibitors and breeders, however for COVID Safe reasons the 2021 Show will have to be treated a little differently and we remind you of the need to social distance at all times. The Show is a good opportunity to promote your breed or your kennel, but we have to undertake this responsibly, given the restrictions in place. I am sure you will have a great day and look forward to seeing everyone at the 2021 ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show

The latest Dances with Dogs event, held on Saturday 7 November 2020, was another day of high entertainment, quality routines, and great effort by dogs and handlers. We were treated with musical steps from Honky Tonk to Abba, and from Bolero to Rock! We also witnessed dance routines from many cultures and countries.
Despite the months of COVID-19 restrictions that have forced much social distancing on us, it was clear that many of our members have swapped dancing with their partners to dancing with their dogs because the routines were all great to see. As always, there was some confusion between some dogs and handlers over who was actually leading.... but dancing is not complete without this spontaneity!
Congratulations to everyone, especially those who went out of their comfort zones (and maybe did not do as well as they hoped) but gave it 100%. A big thank-you to Joan Stewart for organising a super day!

Biotech company PharmAust is calling for more dogs with B cell lymphoma in a Phase IIb trial to help evaluate its newly formulated anti-cancer drug Monapantel (MPL), shown to be safe and effective for dogs that have not undergone any treatment for this cancer. This trial comes following the completion of a Phase I trial in humans and Phase II and IIa trials in pet dogs of the same drug.
Lymphoma is a common cancer diagnosed in dogs. Symptoms can include swellings (enlarged lymph nodes), lethargy, weight loss and loss of appetite.
“Currently, there is no cure for B cell lymphoma,” said Dr Richard Mollard, Chief Scientific Officer of PharmAust. “Usually, only 50% of dogs with B cell lymphoma will survive without treatment for around 30 days and the other half will have progressive disease.”
Veterinary trial centres are set up in New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia to evaluate MPL in dogs that have been newly diagnosed with treatment naïve (not undergone any treatment) B cell lymphoma. Two other trial sites in Melbourne and Sydney were expected to start up in February/March.
MPL is already approved for veterinary use for a different indication and species. PharmAust is aiming to repurpose MPL as a safe and effective approved cancer treatment.
“So far, the initial trials in pet dogs with cancer have proven successful,” said Dr Mollard. “We were pleased to see that in the first trial using the original liquid formula, six of seven dogs achieved stable disease over a prescribed 14-day trial period, with six of seven dogs also showing reductions in their tumour sizes.”
No safety issues were encountered in this first trial; however, the drug formula had a particularly unpleasant taste. So, the drug was reformulated from liquid to a more convenient and very easy-to-swallow tablet.
“This tablet resolved the taste problem and allowed us to significantly increase the dose being given in a second Phase IIa trial,” said Dr Mollard.
“From this trial, using this tablet we were able to identify an optimal dose where anti-cancer activity was maximised. At this dose, one dog’s total tumour burden reduced by over 60 percent and some of the individual tumours disappeared, all within 14 days. It is this dose that we are now taking into the new Phase IIb trial.”
Currently, the best indicated treatment option is chemotherapy, which comes with its own set of limitations and adverse events, and unfortunately, relapse can occur within six to 12 months.
“Monepantel is comparatively very gentle and we would like to see dogs doing well over the first 28-day period, then three and six months, and longer,” said Dr Mollard.
“If this trial determining the optimal prescribed dose is a success, PharmAust will embark on a larger Phase III trial. Going forward, owners of pet dogs with B cell lymphoma will then be given a greater choice of treatment options for their dogs. PharmAust would like to see dogs feeling considerably better, with tumours either disappearing or stabilised.”
To participate in the Phase IIb trial, dogs can have any stage of lymphoma but must be feeling generally well. Ultimately, the patient will only be given the treatment if they have B cell lymphoma but immunophenotyping (analysis of whether the cancer is a B cell or T cell type) is covered as part of the initial screening.
The dog entry criteria for the new clinical trial program are:
• Any stage of lymphoma (based on physical exam)
• Substage A (feeling well)
• Immunophenotype can be pending but must be submitted, and needs to be B-cell based on clinical characteristics
• No previous treatment in the previous 8 weeks, including corticosteroids (prednisolone)
• No other significant concurrent medical problems
• Good quality of life
• The dog should weigh more than 11kg.
The MPL program now commencing involves consultations/treatments at the dog’s nearest trial centre, which currently includes the following five sites:
• Animal Referral Hospital in Homebush, Sydney NSW. Dr Sonya Yu (02) 9758 8666
• Western Australian Veterinary Emergency and Specialty (WAVES) in Success, Perth WA. Dr Sue Bennett (08) 9412 5700
• Perth Veterinary Specialists, Osborne Park, Perth WA. Dr Jessica Finlay (08) 9204 0400
• Animal Referral Hospital in Sinnamon Park, Brisbane QLD. Dr Kathleen O’Connell (07) 3172 0593
• Veterinary Specialist Services in Underwood, Brisbane QLD. Dr Catherine Chan (07) 3841 7011
Two other sites in Melbourne and Sydney are anticipated to re-join the trial in the near future. Owners will have to transport their dogs to their respective centre and pay the cost for initial consultation for diagnosis. Once the pet is diagnosed with lymphoma, PharmAust will cover all clinical trial costs, including travel expenses to and from the trial centre as well as post trial maintenance treatment if both pet owners and vets consider this might be beneficial.
The MPL tablets will be administered at home and owners will be asked to keep a simple logbook during the trial period.
Pet owners interested in enrolling their dog in the MPL trial need to contact their veterinarian for a referral to their nearest trail centre.
Veterinarians for questions about patient referrals or trial sites, please contact Dr Richard Mollard at rmollard@pharmaust.com
Close to 50% of dogs over the age of 10 will develop cancer and approximately 1 in 4 dogs will at some stage in their life develop cancer, according to the Vet Cancer Society.
PharmAust offers a reminder to regularly inspect your pet for any lumps or bumps and pay attention to sudden changes in appearance and behaviour, which can help with early detection.
PAA is a clinical-stage company developing therapeutics for both humans and animals. The company specialises in repurposing marketed drugs lowering the risks and costs of development. These efforts are supported by PAA’s subsidiary, Epichem, a highly successful contract medicinal chemistry company which generated $3.5 million in revenue in FY 2020.
PAA’s lead drug candidate is monepantel (MPL), a novel, potent and safe inhibitor of the mTOR pathway a pathway having key influences in cancer growth and neurodegenerative diseases. MPL has been evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials in humans and Phase 2 clinical trials in dogs. MPL treatment was well-tolerated in humans, demonstrating preliminary evidence of anticancer activity. MPL demonstrated objective anticancer activity in dogs.
PAA is uniquely positioned to commercialise MPL for treatment of human and veterinary cancers as well as neurodegenerative disease as it advances a reformulated version of this drug through Phase 1 and 2 clinical trials. To discover more, visit www.pharmaust.com

The Lowchen origin is obscure. It is perhaps the rarest breed in the Bichon Family; this old breed originating in the medieval era and evidently from many paintings dating back as a pure breed from at least the thirteenth century. However, it is acknowledged that they are of European descent and the ‘country of origin’ is listed as France.
We know the breed had strong roots in central Europe for many centuries. The Lowchen is featured in tapestries from France, woodcuts from Germany and paintings from Belgium that help place the breed throughout Europe from the 14th century. The Lowchen has always been a relatively rare breed throughout its history, but by the mid twentieth century, it was nearly extinct.
In 1945, Madame Bennert of Brussels realised that there were no longer any active Lowchen breeders. In an effort to save the breed, she searched the Belgium registry to find people who had been involved with the Lowchen in the early part of the century. Over the next three years, she managed to locate three Lowchen two females and a male that met her standards. In 1957, she was able to locate a third female Lowchen to add to her small dog kennel. Over the next twenty years, she devoted herself to the task of rebuilding the breed from this foundation of four Lowchen. Her friend, Dr Hans Rickert of Germany, carried on her work, carefully breeding and promoting the Lowchen after her death. 1.
The Lowchen’s coat is long and flowing and comes in many colours. (Any colour or combination of colours is acceptable, with the exception of Merle 1. ) The coat should not be thin and fluffy like a Bichon Frise, but wavy with a mix of thicker hairs amongst the fine ones. This allows for a flowing coat that is not frizzy or fly-away, and a Lowchen coat should not be harsh like many terriers. The Lowchen’s coat does not shed, has very low allergic effects and are considered hypoallergenic. 2..
The head of the Lowchen is one of its most important features, with its relatively short, wide muzzle, broad skull, lively round eyes, and pendulant ears. They can come in all colours, including brown, that allow for dark eyes and nose. The head, when in proportion to the body, is neither too big nor too small, but helps to emphasise the friendly, regal, and leonine personality of the Lowchen. 2.
The Lowchen’s long and wavy coat is presented in a lion cut. This means that the haunches, back legs, front legs (except bracelets around the ankles), and the 1/3–1/2 of the tail closest to the body are shaved, and the rest of the coat is left natural to give the dog the appearance of a male lion. The lion cut is the traditional way of presenting these dogs but it is not known where the practice comes from. Dogs in lion clip may need some protection in wintertime on the shaved parts. 2./4.
Sizes: Height: 25-33 cm (10-13 ins) at withers. 1.
The Lowchen is a friendly, healthy and happy dog. Dogs of this breed are both active, playful, very intelligent and make an excellent house pet. The Lowchen also makes a good pet for families with children. This breed has a history as a companion dog and need the attention of humans. They are not happy left alone for longer periods of time. The Lowchen doesn’t bark excessively, it is a rather quiet breed. 2./4.
The breed is a charming, lively companion. He loves to play in his fenced yard or accompany his owner on long walks. He is very intelligent and loves having new challenges, and he’s a great candidate for obedience or agility. He won’t be suited to go on long-distance runs, but he is a sturdy little dog, who can be happy doing just about any activity with his people. 3.
The Lowchen’s grooming requirements are surprisingly few considering its length of hair: a good brushing every few days, followed by a nice bath every couple of weeks will keep him looking and feeling his best. As a hypoallergenic, non-shedding breed, the Löwchen’s hair will not come out without the intervention of a brush. Nails should be trimmed and ears cleaned regularly as well. The Löwchen can visit a professional groomer (or his breeder) every couple of months to keep the hair trimmed either into a “puppy cut” or the traditional “lion” trim. 3.
The Lowchen’s life span is around 12–14 years. 2.
Reg Young was born on 10 January 1921 in Withycombe, England. He was one of six children and the second eldest. He was an active Mason and a member of the Semper Fidelis Masonic Lodge.
Reg was a radio operator in the British Royal Navy. He saw service on aircraft carriers and on shore.
He served on anti-aircraft ship HMS Carlisle and the aircraft carrier HMS Indomitable. Reg was part of an emergency crew on The ‘Mighty Hood’ when it sailed to Scotland. On two occasions Reg served on ships which subsequently were lost. He was a crew member on one of the ships despatched to Tokyo Bay for the surrender ceremony in 1945.
Reg was discharged from the British Navy in Sydney Harbour. He was given the choice of free passage back to England or, his choice, Australian citizenship rights on a British Passport to remain in Australia. He secured a job with Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia) York Street Sydney and later Overseas Telecommunications Commission at La Perouse.
He married Mary Reilly on 12 March 1949. They have three children: two sons, a daughter and five grand-daughters.
Following OTC employment Reg founded the Pet Shop at Brookvale.
The Dalmatian saga began when Reg bought Freckles (Dubrovnik Mescal) in 1954 from Irene Mackinolty (Beaudalla Dalmatians) and Cuth and Ruth Matthews of Dubrovnik Dalmatians, Chelsea Farm, Windsor Road, Baulkham Hills, which was later purchased by Harry Spira who built a vet hospital. Freckles’ pedigree boasted an imported sire and champion dam.
Not many households had cars back then. However, Reg owned a motorbike and much to the horror of the breeders, six weeks old Freckles was transported home in a brief case balanced on the bike’s petrol tank. Freckles was shown in 1957/58 by Reg although (according to a family member) “Freckles (typical Dalmatian) did not listen to Reg.”
Dumbledeer Dalmatians began with the first litter from Freckles, sired by Fawdry Theodore, who was owned by Julie Lawson. When Reg registered the litter, he was unaware of kennel names. In choosing the prefix his mind travelled back to England and the little thatched cottage in which he was born “Dumbledeer Cottage”. This prefix was accepted and the litter was registered over the counter.
At the start, Reg was involved in showing. However, his direction changed as Mary became more involved.
In the early 1960s Reg established a flourishing business in Brookvale selling fresh meat for cats and dogs. As they were attending dog shows Reg grabbed the opportunity to sell dog accessories, displayed on a spotted frame named the “Dog House”.
This was the birth of Showaquipment, the show bus business. Showaquipment was established in Elanora Heights then moved Brookvale. What began as products being displayed on trestles, moved to a caravan fitted with shelving, then the blue van which transported display shelving, and finally into the refitted bus (of which there were two).
Many exhibitors will fondly remember ‘the bus’ at Orchard Hills (see pictured left and above). Reg solved all problems from the orderly array of dog accessories.
In the mid 1960s the wholesale business, Challenge Dog Supplies, was established in Elanora Heights. Imported grooming products, leads, check chains (and more) were added to the range of goods sold.
Training webbing leads for obedience clubs were created by Reg in club colours. Challenge subsequently moved to Dee Why, then Brookvale and subsequently to Collaroy where it is operated by Mary and Reg’s son, Philip.
Reg retired at 98 years to enjoy his garden at Elanora. His chosen words encapsulating his beliefs are from Mark Twain “Do the right thing. It will gratify some people and astonish the rest.”
Many first-time dog owners feel uncomfortable locking up their dog in a crate. However, young puppies are actually quite comfortable with small spaces. In nature, pregnant dogs will seek out or build a small, secluded den to give birth to puppies.
In the wild, a dog does not bed down in the middle of an open field where predators can attack him. The dog finds a tree trunk or cave where he can feel a sense of protection.
Correctly using a crate can satisfy your dog’s basic need for security. A puppy can feel quite safe and secure in a crate, once he becomes familiar with it. A crate is also useful (and sometimes necessary) when you travel with your pup.
A large crate will allow your pooch to use one corner as a toilet and the other corner as a bed. This defeats the purpose of potty training. The crate should only be big enough so your puppy can comfortably stand up straight, turn around and lie down with his legs stretched.
Dogs have a strong natural instinct to not soil the area they sleep in. The right sized crate will trigger this natural instinct in your pup. Your dog will quickly learn bladder and bowel control as he spends time inside the crate.
If you have a large breed puppy that will grow a lot, then it is best to buy a crate with adjustable fencing, otherwise you will have to keep buying bigger crates as your pup grows in size.
The crate should only be used as a training device and not as a place for punishment. Your dog should associate only positive emotions with the crate.
Dogs always want to be near their pack. You and your family are your dog’s pack. So the crate should be close to you and your family at all times. Place it in the busiest room of your house during the daytime. Move the crate to different rooms of the house as you move around during the day.
At night, for the first two weeks, place the crate close by your bed so your puppy can preferably see you or at least hear you. After two weeks, you can move his crate to the final location where you would be keeping your puppy at night in the long-term.
Line the floor of the crate with a soft, water-proof and chew-resistant material like a crate pad. Don’t put food or water inside the crate. It interferes with the house-training process. Your puppy may also spill the contents inside.
However, you can put a treat-dispensing puzzle feeder inside the crate. This will prevent your pooch from getting bored when he stays inside for extended periods. A KONG is another great toy to put inside the crate that will keep your puppy mentally stimulated during his stay.
To make your dog comfortable with the crate, place it in a room where he spends a lot of time. Leave the crate door open and let your pup explore the inside and outside of the crate on his own.
If your puppy is hesitant and moves away from the crate, then don’t try to force him. Place a few of his favourite toys or his blanket inside the crate. Toss a treat inside the crate. Sit next to the crate and talk to your dog in a pleasant voice. Praise your dog and entice your dog toward the crate. Let your pup take his own time and step inside the crate on his own.
After your puppy has become familiar with the crate, the next step is to teach him how to be comfortable staying inside the crate for a short while. The best way is to put the puppy’s food bowl inside the crate and let your dog feed with the crate door open.
First, keep the bowl halfway inside the crate so that only your pup’s front paws need to be inside while eating. After a couple of days, keep the bowl all the way at the back of the crate. Once he eats comfortably while entirely inside the crate, you can start closing the door just for the time while he is eating.
Initially, you can immediately open the door as soon as he’s finished eating. Slowly increase the time you keep the door closed after he’s eaten. Work your way up till he can comfortably stay inside the crate for almost 10 minutes after eating.
If your pooch starts whining or barking when closed inside the crate, then you may have progressed too quickly. Tap the crate door gently and say “No” in a firm but gentle voice. Your pup will eventually learn to stop crying when inside the crate.
Wait for your puppy to stop whining and only then let him out the crate. If you let your dog out as soon as he cries, then your pup will learn that whining will get him out. And you don’t want to teach that habit.
Once your pooch is comfortable eating his meal in the crate and stays inside for a short while afterward without whining, then you can begin crating your dog for short periods when you are at home.
Teach a command to call your puppy to the crate. Entice your puppy to come to the crate with a treat and then say a simple phrase like “crate up” or “kennel up.” Once your dog is inside, give your dog another treat and gently shut the door.
Sit beside the crate quietly for some minutes. Then let your dog out and give another treat and praise your dog. Gradually increase the time for which you keep your puppy inside. Also, move away from the crate while staying in sight of your pooch. Eventually, you will be able to crate your pup and move out of sight for 30 minutes.
When you return to the crate, your dog may get excited and jump around. Don’t respond to this and keep it low key.
Once you are close enough to the crate that your puppy can see you, don’t immediately open the crate. Wait for a few minutes and open the crate calmly and casually. When he comes out, praise your dog and take him to the designated toilet spot to eliminate.
Always play with your dog or walk him for a minimum of ten minutes before you put him back inside the crate. Repeat this training every day at the same exact time to build a consistent routine.
Daily vary the time between when you close the crate door and when you leave the room (from between 1 minute to 10 minutes). If you crate your pup and leave the room immediately, your puppy may associate crating with being left alone.
Once your dog can comfortably stay crated for 30 minutes with you out of sight, you can slowly work your way up to leaving for a few hours or even overnight. You can leave the house and come back.
Every time you take your pup outside the crate, take your dog outdoors to eliminate. Use your potty command to stimulate your pooch to go potty. Don’t play with your dog until he eliminates. Even if your dog whines or barks, you must wait till he has eliminated. Otherwise, you are teaching your dog to whine just to get out of the crate and play.
Every puppy has a limit to how long they can stay crated. Dogs require frequent social interaction. Don’t keep your dog crated for more than 6 hours at a stretch (except overnight).
If you will be gone for over 6 hours, then have a friend come home and take out the pup to eliminate. Or leave your dog at a doggie daycare.
Puppies younger than 6 months need to be fed at least three times a day. After 6 months, you can switch to feeding just twice a day.
Your pup’s potty training timetable will be based on his feeding schedule.
Each time you take your puppy outside the crate, follow the below steps:
1. Take puppy outside on a leash to the designated toilet area.
2. Give the potty command. Stand your ground firmly till your pooch eliminates.
3. Then praise your puppy and give a treat.
4. Take puppy for a walk or play for few minutes.
If you bring your dog inside immediately after he eliminates, he will think that freedom ends as soon as he eliminates. So your dog will hold it in longer.
When you take your pup for a walk or play with your dog afterward, your dog learns that the sooner he completes his potty, the quicker he gets treats, playtime, and fun.
Playing with your puppy after he has eliminated teaches your dog that he should toilet as soon as he is outside. Then he gets to walk/play with you longer.
Here is a sample timetable for crate training a 6-month-old puppy. You can modify it based on your personal wakeup time, working hours, and bedtime.
Immediately after wake-up (6.00am - 7.00am)
1. Take puppy out of crate and follow steps
Bring indoors and feed breakfast

Once you setup a feeding and toilet routine, stick with it for at least a week before you make any changes. This will help your puppy get house trained faster.
After a week of following one routine, you should have a good idea of when your puppy likes to eat and when he likes to eliminate. Based on this information, you can alter the schedule as needed.

Caught your dog doing something they shouldn’t be? We’ve all been there! Here are some behavioural issues you’ll need to nip in the bud as soon as possible.
As Pet Parents, we sometimes look the other way and let our pets get away with things they really shouldn’t. Don’t worry it’s not just you!
But when your dog’s behaviour becomes destructive or dangerous, it’s time to start making changes, for their sake as much as your own. Remember, you’re the leader of the pack, so it’s up to you to get bad behaviour to stop.
Here are some of the most common behavioural issues and how to stop them.
We’ve all come across a dog who barks at everything from airplanes to the breeze. We’re not talking about barking at strangers or when they’re feeling threatened. We mean incessant barking at almost nothing.
Solution: The only way to fix this is to figure out why your pup is barking. Is it boring? Anxiety? Loneliness? Fix that problem and the barking should stop.
If your dog chews on sofas, doors, and shoes (with or without feet in them), it’s often a sign of anxiety. Chewing can be a distracting, calming action. The other big chew-starter is boredom.
Solution: Get your dog their own chew toy. Praise them for chewing on it, and when you see them chewing on something they shouldn’t be, replace it with their toy. Give positive reinforcement.
Begging for human food is learned behaviour. Usually, dogs know they’ll be rewarded for it, so they think it’s good behaviour. Don’t think that they’ll feel unloved if you don’t give in. There are plenty of chances to give them love, but this shouldn’t be one.
Solution: Positive reinforcement is important to change your dog’s behaviour here. Make sure they know they should be sitting at a bit of a distance and ignore their whines. Feed them their own treat after your meal, if they’ve been a good dog! If it helps, leave them in their crate when you’re eating, or if you can, it’s a good idea to feed them their own meal at the same time.
Digging is usually out of boredom, or because your dog doesn’t have enough toys to stimulate them. If they’ve seen you digging in the garden, they may also think it’s a good thing.
Solution: Get your dog some toys. Encourage them to play with the toys so when you’re not home they’ll choose the toys over the dirt.
This can be equally frustrating and embarrassing if it’s happening in public! Basically, your dog is letting you know there are more interesting things out there than you. Don’t worry, though it can be fixed with a bit of effort and practice.
Solution: Reward your dog every time they obey your call. Every time! If they have an incentive to come to you, this problem should disappear.
Whichever behavioural problem your dog is showing, there’s a way to fix it so both pup and human can move forward, happier, and healthy. Remember whatever you do to help your dog learn, do it with love!

Training a Human is never easy, but, building on the ideas, jokes and visual gags of their first book (Mike&Scrabble
A guide to training your new Human), this book reveals the developing relationship between a sohisticated, smart and caring Dog and a dumb Human.
Every day, Scrabble gets Mike to illustrate a thought about the relationship between a Dog and a Human. Sometimes the thoughts are funny, sometimes they are sad, but they very often bring a little smile of recognition from a growing number of Mike&Scrabble fans on social media and now in bookshops and libraries all over the world. We hope they do the same for you.
