Well, Easter has gone so time to knuckle down with the cooler weather on the horizon. Hopefully the weather may start to dry out, as is the forecast for the later part of the year.
The grounds at Orchard Hills have held up to the second large drenching that they received in two years. The damage was considerably less, however, due to the severity of the flooding in 2020, insurance is extremely hard to get for flood prone areas. We are still negotiating for cover for the buildings, even if we cannot get full cover for the grounds. With the reduced area negotiated with the Government, they should be liable for the care of the outer perimeter fences.
There was a very different atmosphere this year at Sydney Royal, with restricted crowds and local judges. The entries were only down about 30%, and the crowds that were watching were as large, if not bigger than normal years. The public appeared very keen to see purebred dogs on show, at the biggest event of the calendar year.
With the COVID vaccination roll out, slow as it is, we should be back to full capacity next year. Whether we can get overseas judges will depend on the COVID situation internationally, which at the moment is not looking good. Countries that have been hard at work vaccinating are starting to be able to lift their heads up, while others are still facing further severe waves of infections. I am (as I am sure we all are) eternally grateful to be living on an island continent far away from the devastating situations these countries are facing.
With the Government we continue to be very proactive in promoting the development of better Codes of Practice for the Breeding of Dogs and Cats that they are current, practical and readily achievable. Equally, there needs to be a clear separation of the commercial breeders from periodical or hobby breeders, which does not occur at this point in time, as the Codes are predominantly aimed at commercial breeders. The Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party did put forward a sensible, alternative definition of an Animal Trader, which would have separated out the commercial breeders, however this was not passed. What was passed by the Government was the need to have current updated Codes of Practice, which are supposedly to be put forwards by late May. We continue to push for sensible changes to the Codes.
It is with great sadness that DOGS NSW has received the resignation of Director Jan Seary from the Southern region. Jan has been a very active member of the Board for many years and has always fought hard to push the interests of the Regional and country areas. Jan has also been active on quite a few Committees as well. On a personal note, I would like to thank Jan for all her input and strong promotion of the purebred dog community, and of DOGS NSW in particular over the years. We wish her well. It will be very difficult to replace her, with her exper tise and depth of knowledge of the dog world.

This edition of DOGS NSW magazine sadly reports the passing of international All Breeds Judge and mentor, Barbara Ludowici. Barbara was a lady in all respects and a wonderful friend and mentor to many in the dog world.
A great lover of dogs in general, Barbara was greatly respected for her knowledge, her support of others, her vision and contribution to her favourite breed, the Welsh Corgi (Pembroke). The highlight of her judging career culminated in 1999 when she was given the honour of judging Welsh Corgis at the Crufts Dog Show.
Barbara’s legacy was also a book she had written about her life, which features some wonderful extracts of life’s lessons in judging as well as her connection to dogs and the dog world in general. A few of the book’s extracts are also included in the magazine as a tribute and testimony to this wonderful lady’s life and character. Rest in peace Barbara.
Senior Vice President Lynnette Brown has written a touching tribute to All Breeds Judge, Tom Tancred. Tom was quite the character and his mischievous personality and keen wit will be sorely missed. The dog community has lost an icon who is irreplaceable in the hearts and minds of many. Please turn to page 13 to read.
As the DOGS NSW Library & Archives Committee ‘Australia Day’ Show was postponed due to extreme weather, we are happy to have coverage of the show, which took place on Sunday 21 February. Coverage of the event commences on page 10.
The Dances with Dogs Committee were proud to present the very first Trick Dog Trial in NSW, a double competition, held on 16 January 2021. As many competitors had been practising throughout 2020, this event was highly anticipated and the competition was a great success. For more details please turn to page 19.
Boarding your pet is always an emotional tug, particularly if you have never boarded your pet before and are unsure of how they will cope with a new environment. There are many questions to ask of a facility, however, ‘Best Pet Boarding’ details all of the questions you will need to ask of the facility, as well as a few you may not have thought of. Written by Bow Wow Meow Insurance, the article is a comprehensive check list to take with you as a reference.
“A common problem with new puppies is they like to bite and chew on things” and this topic is the start of an interesting article, ‘Puppies with Crocodile Jaws’ written by Le Hammer. Le discusses ways to modify and cope with the behaviour. Turn to page 21.
The Tibetan Terrier is this month’s breed spotlight feature and despite being called a terrier, the breed is not a member of the terrier group. A lively, outgoing and very good-natured breed, the Tibetan Terrier is devoted to family and is extremely loyal and affectionate. It has an independent nature and it is very intelligent and mischievous. Please turn to page 16 for more on the breed.
Winners of the March ‘How to Train Your Dog’ book competition were Kaylene Uren, Denise Bottero, Cecilia Stone, Gael Goldsack and Julia Weston.

Kerry Christofi DOGSBarbara Ludowici was born to a life of animals. With a grandfather who was an Honorary Veterinary Surgeon to the Australian Jockey Club, Barbara, with a natural eye for quality, balance and conformation, utilised her own genetic background to the benefit of the purebred dog world.
1954 saw Barbara purchase her first Welsh Corgi and developed a mentor in one of the most influential veterinarians in the pedigree dog world, both here and overseas, Dr Harold Roger Spira.
Seeing incredible potential in Barbara, Dr Spira encouraged her to pursue her passion for the Corgi breed, both Cardigan and Pembroke. Dr Spira was able to encourage Barbara to join the first dog Judges Training Scheme in 1965, eventually leading to Barbara becoming an international All Breeds Judge.
Barbara was the first Australian to judge a specialty in the USA and went on to also be given the ultimate honour of judging Welsh Corgis at the prestigious 1999 Crufts Dog Show. This was Barbara’s greatest honour in her judging career.
With foresight, Barbara realised that tail docking would one day be banned. After discussion with her great friend Thelma Gray (Rosavel Kennels breeder of the Queen’s Corgis), Barbara set out to breed naturally docked Pembroke Corgis. Locating a naturally docked gene from a Corgi in Wagga, Barbara imported the gene into her lines, though many in the dog world failed to see the need. However, Barbara’s vision was realised when tail docking was banned in 2004, and today nearly all the natural bob tail Pembroke Corgis come from her lines.
To accomplish this incredible journey, Barbara had the full support of her very patient, loving and caring husband James Ludowici, married for 69 years.
On a personal note Barbara, was always supportive of the work that we were able to accomplish in the dog world. As a breeder of Bernese Mountain Dogs, Lyn Brand was always guided and inspired by Barbara to follow a passion. For Dr Rob Zammit BVSc, Barbara always encouraged and supported his work, in both canine genetics and reproduction, which are the corner stones of his veterinary practice today.
A great loss to pedigree dogs, Barbara’s legacy is not just to the dog world: a life’s lesson that is captured in the title of her book “ YOU ARE AS HAPPY AS YOU WANT TO BE.” Please turn the page for extracts from Barbara’s book, plus more photos.
Written by Dr Rob Zammit & Lyn Brand. Photo by Cabal Candids.“I like to imagine there has been a purpose to my life: to understand, communicate and mix socially with my fellow human beings with harmony, love and kindness.
To enjoy the wonders of the earth around us, to be creative, and to nurture and encourage my children to their full potential so that they, too, may experience fulfilment.”
“In assessing the dogs, you should not take into account any other factors in the addition to the advantages and disadvantages of dogs standing in front of you. You have only one duty: to judge dogs.”
“You must forget the handlers and forget what dogs have won previously. Spread your dogs the way you think right, no matter who owns the winner your best friend or your most bitter foe. Ignore the fact that you won by one of the exhibitors last week, and the fact that another exhibitor will judge you next show.”
“Be completely selfish, relax and enjoy the pleasure of judging. By judging the dog, you save your reputation. This is the only way to earn respect of your colleagues and exhibitors.”
“One also needs to be aware that all everything one does in the ring will be scrutinised and analysed. Judging is subjective; beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The judge only has a few minutes to assess a dog, and even the greatest dog in the world can have an off day. The judge may award another dog that is presenting well in a more appealing manner, than have to stand the criticism of the favourite not taking the big prize and honour.”
“The judge, having been invited to give his/her opinion, must be impartial at all times and remember that although the final decision rests with him/her, it is ultimately a hobby and should be fun for everyone.”
“From the earliest time I can remember there has always been animals around our family, especially dogs, whose loving warmth I find irresistible.”
“As I have rarely known life without a dog, I can say I have experienced the joys a dog can bring, and the heartache that comes when a much-loved dog passes on and leaves a gap in the household... until the next one comes along with a new set of characteristics and impish ways that bring love, laughter and companionship in all that the family is involved.”
“When I was five years old, in 1934, I contracted polio. During this time, I was given a Sealyham Terrier, “Monty” to help in my recovery. He was the delight of my life and today I remember the loving warmth of that white bundle with the cheekiest, furry face. He was the start of my passion for dogs and their companionship. Monty brought me such joy and helped me forget the daily routine of being pushed and pulled around to get my limbs strengthened and the nerves to the muscles, which had been paralysed, functioning again. My Aunt Maude (Barbara’s physiotherapist at the time) firmly believed that stimulation was essential for a complete recovery. In his intelligent way, Monty knew that I was disabled and accepted my weak, shaking hands and fingers, and my unsteady, staggering gait, while I learnt to walk again.”
“I never would have expected when my husband Jim brought into our home the first Pembroke Welsh Corgi in 1954, that it would set me on a path of years of study to achieve the knowledge and understanding of the heritage, structure and purpose of the many varieties of pedigree breeds, travelling the world, meeting people from all walks of life, and ultimately judging at dog shows.”
“To people not involved, and who do not understand the principal of showing dogs, it can seem a ridiculous pastime. To the participants, it is a serious sport, not only in conformation, but the many activities it offers. Obedience training, agility, retrieving trials, tracking and the junior handling for children. All these endeavours bring together a wide variety of people who love dogs and want to mix with others who have the same interest in a competitive sport.”
As the Australia Day Show was cancelled, due to high temperatures and extreme weather, the show date was deferred to the 21st February 2021. The exhibitors were very supportive of this move and 825 dogs were entered for the show, which was a great entry.
The grounds were in perfect order, and although a little humid, the weather was kind and the cool breeze in the shaded areas was very pleasant.
The day began with a minute silence for our recently departed members: much loved All Breeds Judge Barbara Ludiwici, Fran Wilson - Planhaven Newfoundlands, a well known exhibitor; and John Tanks from our Western Region, well known handler extraordinaire of Shelbrae Shetland Sheepdogs.
Donna Morris kindly judged the three Junior Handler classes and we saw some very skilled handlers.
Sadly our usual Australia Day activities did not occur, due to COVID and few exhibitors displayed the Australia Flag. Grace Woodward, however, did an incredible display with her amazing technicolour Australia Day tent! We hope next year to join in with her efforts and celebrate on Australia Day.
Tom Couchman, together with his assistance Jordan Long, as always, did an impeccable job. Judges and Stewards were catered for in the Research and Education Building, as Dances with Dogs had two competitions in the Amenities Building on the day.
Thank you to all on the day: Judges, including General Specials Judge Mrs Toni Comerford (NSW), Stewards and Committee members, Ffire Photography and sponsor Royal Canin. Special mention and thanks to caterer Shirley Donaldson who had to preplan and transfer food to the Research and Education Building.
Nancy Keck Chair, Library & Archives CommitteeAs a fellow trainee I first became acquainted with Tom whilst studying the Hound Group and thus found myself in awe of his amazing ability to retain both Pedigrees and Breed Standards. We soon became firm friends. Tom only needed to study for half a day prior to any theory exam, whilst I was parked at the kitchen table feverously pouring over breed standards for months on end.
Tom was a gentleman, a kind, modest soul with a wicked sense of humour. Tom loved to shop, and he really didn’t care what he shopped for, just as long he was shopping. From high-end antiques to bric-a-brac and nonsense items. Christmas gifts were Tom’s specialty. I’m sure he spent months trolling the local stores in Camden, foraging out quirky gifts. I still have a silver glittered, stiletto shoe, wine bottle holder, formed out of resin and also a sign that I was supposed to hang on the gazebo at shows saying, “Not everybody can be the Queen.. some just have to sit on the sidewalk and wave as I go by.” Needless to say it never made it to a dog show, but it still has pride of place on the piano in my study; a source of constant amusement to my family! I recall, one year, Rosemary Duffy received a kitchen tidy in the form of a cow, and the next year, a very interesting sun hat bedazzled with bright coloured fake flowers such was Tom’s mischievous sense of humour!
Tom was a storyteller and he told them well. Being born into the dog world, the son of Reg and Irene Tancred, Tom had a full repertoire of hilarious stories from the good old days. Among them, tales of infamous Toy exhibitors, who in their other life, were Madams running houses of ill-repute; to another exhibitor who, during a scuffle, lost their false teeth on the dance floor, which ended up under a table on the other side of the room. It didn’t matter how many times you heard the stories (and there were many), they never ceased to induce an aching jaw and a sore belly. This was when Tom was in his element, assuming his position in the centre of the room at the end of a dinner party, or during the luncheon break at a Dog Show, surrounded by people hanging on his every word, wearing that unforgettable cheeky grin that he kept especially for those occasions. Such was Tom’s wicked sense of humour, that when an aspiring Toy Judge visited him at Wongarbon to learn about Maltese, they asked him about bathing the dogs, he replied, “I just bath them and peg them on the line to dry!!!”
Tom was gifted with an eye for a dog that is a rarity, obtaining his Toy licence in 2002 and becoming an All Breeds Judge in 2016. He was the type of dog person that we all aspire to be. His depth and breadth of knowledge of the Toy, Hound, Gundog, and to some degree the Terrier and Non Sporting groups, was formidable.
Tom was born into a family that loved their dogs, to very supportive parents Reg and Irene, who indulged his interest in dogs. Both parents were well known to Dog Exhibitors in the Western areas near Dubbo. Irene was a well-respected breeder of Maltese. Tom often recalled, as a young boy going to dog shows, with a Maltese in a fishing basket, which also doubled as the seat for him.
Tom joined the RASKC on the 1st December 1963 and The COSYVISTA prefix was registered on 1st December 1973 to Thomas and Irene Tancred. Under the prefix of COSYVISTA well over 200 Champions were subsequently produced, with a very high percentage becoming Best in Show winners, particularly in Maltese and Pomeranians. The COSYVISTA prefix will long be remembered as the home of the many outstanding Maltese.
Later, Tom bred or owned and exhibited with partner Les, under the Kelzarki prefix: Afghan Hounds, Bichon Frise, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Maltese, Papillion, Yorkshire Terriers, Lakeland Terriers, Kerry Blue Terriers, Fox Terrier (Smooth), English and American Cocker Spaniels, also importing several exceptionally well bred Miniature Poodles.
In the Afghan Hound breed their influence is legendary. Their imports included the influential bitch, COAST WINDS NARCISSIST USA, also her son, Multi Best in Show CH KELZARKI BLUE SPRUCE became a major influence in Australian Afghan Hound Pedigrees.
Another noteworthy import, an Afghan Hound dog, Multi Best In Show Winner CH KABIKS THE CANDIDATE (USA), “Hoover”, being a litter mate to the number one US (All Breeds) of that day, CH KABIKS THE FRONT RUNNER- “Hoover” went on to sire multiple Best in Show winners, subsequently having an enormous impact on the breed.
In recent years, Tom and Les were known worldwide for the quality of their home bred Bichon Frise, producing multiple, Grand Champions, Supreme Champions, Top Toy Winners, Number One Toy Dog Dogz Online Point score and multiple Best in Show winners.
Tom and Les just didn’t stop with dogs, they also operated a small, but impressively successful Arabian Horse Stud, EASTWINDS. Horses were imported from and exported to many countries in the world. Their EASTWINDS Arabian Stud enjoyed much success in the show ring to the highest level in this country, with both Tom and Les officiating at major Australian events.
In his professional life, Tom enjoyed a long career in Finance and Banking, after studying Law at Sydney University, and upon retirement became an ANKC approved All Breeds Judge.
Sadly, Tom’s life was not without its challenges. Tom suffered for many years with multiple health issues. Tom survived a very close encounter with death that led to a liver transplant that enabled him to live many more, happy and fruitful years, much to the relief of his long-time partner Les. Despite one of the side-effects of the liver transplant being severe diabetes, Tom was addicted to sweets of any kind. Dessert was always the most important part of any meal and Les often lamented of how he, with Sherlock Holmes style super sleuth precision searched out Tom’s secret stashes of lollies, chocolates, biscuits and Pepsi. It was a game of cat and mouse to stop him from pandering to his sweet tooth. Many tried valiantly and failed. Nevertheless, he battled through, many times looking like the end was nigh, but again to the relief of his loved ones, rising like a phoenix from the ashes.
With Tom’s passing the Australian dog world, partner Les, his many dear friends and confidantes, lost an icon who is irreplaceable in the hearts and minds of many, but his memory will live on, bringing a smile of gladness to the hearts of those who loved him well, as they recall the great times they spent with him.
Rest easy my friend. Words: Lynette Brown

These awards exist to recognise the valuable contribution of individuals to the current and future existence of the organisation. In particular, the Awards System, described below, is intended to recognise a wide range of factors, more than simply by being a long-term Member. It also seeks to create awards so that significant contributions to DOGS NSW may be recognised appropriately.
The two Awards available to Members are:
1. Distinguished Service Award
2. Honorary Life Membership
The award of Life Membership is the highest honour that DOGS NSW can bestow on an individual. It is conferred on those who have made an exceptional contribution to the existence and advancement of the organisation. The aim is to make life membership hard to obtain so that it is respected by members and valued by recipients
Members wishing to nominate a fellow Member for either Award may apply to the Office for the appropriate Nomination Form.
Each form must be completed by two Members, in good standing and lodged with the Office prior to the advertised closing date for nominations.
All nominations are to be treated in the strictest confidence.
Nominations will be referred to the Honours Working Party for due consideration to be followed by the Working Party’s recommendations to the Board of Directors.
The Nominee is to be a continuous financial member of DOGS NSW for a minimum period of 15 years. The Nominee must have served the dog world in an effective and meaningful way; such as Member of an Affiliate, a Committee Member, a Steward, an Event Organiser and any of the other many contributing roles which require a considerable degree of personal endeavour, involvement and dedication.
The Nominee is to be a continuous financial member of DOGS NSW for a minimum period of 25 years. The Nominee must have demonstrated significant, sustained and high quality service enhancing the reputation and future of the overall organisation particularly to the administration, development and promotion of the canine world.
Should a member lack the membership precondition, but it can be demonstrated that the member has provided outstanding and meritorious services to DOGS NSW, then a nomination may well be warranted.
The members of the Honours Working Party are of the view that should a nomination not be successful, further nominations for that nominee should not be considered for a minimum period of three years.
Please forward the completed nomination form, marked to the attention of: The Company Secretary DOGS NSW by either:
Post: PO Box 632, ST MARYS, NSW 2790; Email: info@dogsnsw.org.au; Fax: (02) 9834 3872.
All completed nomination forms are to be submitted to DOGS NSW no later than Friday 25 June 2021.

The Tibetan Terrier is an ancient breed, with its origins shrouded in the myth and mystery of Tibet. In its country of origin, the Tibetan Terrier was reputed to be a multitasker: a watchdog in the villages and monasteries and warned owners of approaching strangers on tent and caravan journeys. The breed also herded yaks and sheep, was a driver of packhorses and retrieved lost articles down the mountain side.
Developed in a harsh environment, the Tibetan Terrier’s battle against difficult terrain made the breed what it is today: a tough, nimble and determined little dog.
Despite its name, it is not a member of the terrier group. The breed was given its English name by European travellers due to its resemblance to known terrier breeds. The Tibetan name for the breed, Tsang Apso, roughly translates to “shaggy or bearded (“apso”) dog, from the province of Tsang”.1.
The Tibetan Terrier is a lively, outgoing and very good-natured breed. Both dogs and bitches are devoted to their family and are extremely loyal. However, the breed can be cautious or reserved when initially meeting strangers. Overt affection is moderated by an independent nature and it is extremely intelligent and mischievous.
The temperament has been one of the most attractive aspects of the breed since it was first established. They are amiable and affectionate family dogs, sensitive to their owners, and gentle with older children if properly introduced. As is fitting for a dog with origins as a watch dog, Tibetans tend to be reserved around strangers, but should never be aggressive nor shy with them. The Tibetan Terrier has a deep bark and is not prone to excessive barking. 1.
The Tibetan Terrier is a small to medium sized dog with long hair, which may be straight or slightly wavy. The long coat should not deceive you into thinking this is a puny or over-cosetted breed, as underneath it there is a strong, sturdy, well muscled body.
A unique feature of the breed is its feet, which are large, flat and round and act like a snowshoe by providing traction. Tibetan Terriers can come in all colours, but the chocolate colour is not permitted in the show ring.
Responsible breeders have been health testing their dogs for well over 30 years and it is now considered as the normal thing to do. Hip scoring at 12 months of age and annual eye examinations for Generalised Progressive Retinal Atrophy (GPRA) are well established, but new DNA genetic tests are available for Primary Lens Luxation (PLL) and Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis ( NCL). Juvenile cataracts may also occur. Because of the long history of health checking in this breed, the incidence of affected dogs is extremely low.
The Tibetan Terrier has a double coat. It never sheds its coat around the house, so the breed is suitable for people with a coat allergy, but the woolly undercoat does shed into the topcoat and will cause serious matting. The dead coat therefore needs to be combed out regularly.
On the other hand, clipping the coat off and keeping it short with a trim every two or three months has great appeal to some owners and the breed just loves it.
“Developed in a harsh environment, the Tibetan Terrier’s battle against difficult terrain made the breed what it is today: a tough, nimble and determined little dog.” - Dr Mike Tempest
While suitable for apartment living, the Tibetan is an energetic dog that requires regular exercise. The energy level of the Tibetan is moderate to high and its general nature is happy, active, lively, intelligent, and agile. As a result, they are often well-suited for dog sports such as agility. They are steadfast, determined, and clever, which can lead to them being stubborn. Tibetan Terriers are usually charming and loyal. Some dogs of this breed can often be guarding of their resources, which can make it hard to live with another pet. 1.
The Tibetan Terrier makes an excellent family pet and is especially good with children. The breed likes to be talked to and although its intelligence does not make it naturally obedient, it can be bribed by small treats for training.
As for exercise, the Tibetan Terrier can take as much or as little as the owner wishes to provide. Going on a trek is no problem to the breed, nor is lounging about the house, but in the latter case there needs to be plenty of stimulation with toys to occupy the intelligent mind.

On 16 January 2021 DOGS NSW held its first Tricks Trial in NSW, a double competition which was held in the airconditioned comfort of the Amenities Building.
After pacing their backyards throughout 2020, wondering why their trainers were constantly wearing muzzles they called ‘masks’, many dogs were having their first return to trialling since the pandemic. The day was a great success, with an amazing group of dogs and handlers who dazzled the judge with twists, jumps and the sort of obedience you could only dream of getting from your children.
The day commenced with Judge Vicki Etherington OAM giving a wonderful briefing about expectations in Starter tricks, which was ideal for people trialling for the first time, and served to settle all our nerves.
For handlers considering a trial for the first time, Trick Dog Competition commences at the Starter Class. The handler selects 6 tricks which the dog enjoys doing from a possible 15 tricks, and the goal is to enter trials and achieve the Trick Dog Title Starter (TK.S.).
After this, one can progress to Novice as the dog and handler gain more experience; at this level the Tricks are more difficult and the number of Tricks increases to 8. Intermediate Class requires 8 Tricks for competition and each Trick is more difficult in execution and duration.
In the Advanced class, the dog is required to perform a selection of 10 Advanced Tricks from a list of 25 Trick descriptions. It may sound daunting, but it’s a great way to focus your dog and keep their brains busy and engaged.
Apologies to those people who could not enter the trial because of the huge demand and the COVID-19 restrictions, but there will be lots of opportunities in the months ahead. A BIG thank-you to Joan Stewart for her tireless efforts to make the day possible and to Vicki Etherington for doing a sterling job judging.

A common problem with new puppies is they like to bite and chew on things. They explore everything with their mouth. Puppies have innate behaviours that kept them alive in the wild. One of those behaviours is play fighting with their litter mates. As an innate behaviour we cannot stop a puppy wanting to chew things. We need to modify the behaviour so it fits in with the human interpretation of being a good puppy.
Humans also “play fight” although we usually call it sport. We play “ritualised aggression” and if we play fair no-one gets hurt. Problems happen if you do not stick to the rules; it may escalate into aggressive behaviour and outside the sports arena it may be known as a pub brawl. Thankfully, most humans learn to redirect aggression into some other form of conflict resolution.
There are good reasons to stop a pup from biting on us, not the least being that it hurts. Secondly, we do not want them rehearsing behaviours similar to aggression. When pups play with each other they can tolerate quite hard bites. But human skin is more delicate. So we need to teach them what they may bite and how hard they can bite.
Pups must be allowed to play their games but we have to set up rules so that no-one gets hurt. We must also maintain a good friendly relationship with our pups / dogs. We want them to trust us and we want them to have a fun life.
There are many ways to modify a puppy’s behaviour and it is not my intention to get into an argument about why reward works a lot better than punishment. I will say that punishment is mean to your pup; they will lose trust in you. There are many other good reasons not to use punishment.
So, rather than reprimand your pup for behaviour that we do not like, a more successful method is to simply INTERRUPTREDIRECT then REWARD an alternative behaviour. The sooner you interrupt the wrong thing, the less the pup gives themselves their own reward (biting is fun).
A little bit of mouthing is OK because this is how a pup learns bite inhibition just how far he can close his mouth without hurting you. But as soon as the pup starts to use his needle teeth, you need to interrupt him take your anatomy (whatever he was biting on) and immediately redirect the biting behaviour to a toy he is allowed to chew. It might be a food toy that he can continue to chew; it might be a tug toy so you teach him an alternate game with you that allows him to bite on a toy; or throw a toy for him to retrieve, which is fun for a natural retriever. Reward the pup with a treat when he brings the toy back.
Sometimes the pup just comes back for more. The toy you used may not be as exciting as chasing your ankles or maybe the pup is just overexcited. We need to teach pups to calm themselves down. Sometimes this “crocodile behaviour” is related to being overtired and super excitable. Young kids often over excite puppies just by the way they run and squeal. There may be a history of the biting game being allowed to continue for too long, or the behaviour has been unintentionally encouraged. For the more dedicated “bitey” puppies we have further tactics to Interrupt-Redirect-Reward.
Firstly, eliminate all of your responses that may have unintentionally encouraged the pup to keep up the biting game. The average owner allows the pup to mouth and bite for too long; the pup becomes more aroused and then the owner is unable to appropriately redirect. New owners also do things like push a pup away, or when pup bites at their feet jump away which, (from the puppy’s point of view) just increases the fun, therefore the biting behaviour increases. When the pup gets razzed up, chasing after the human becomes the best fun ever. Leaving the room just allows the pup to indulge in a chase game. In this situation it is best to remove the pup from the situation rather than remove the human. For a pup in true “crocodile-mode” we interrupt this behaviour by scooping them up and putting them in their quiet place (a crate, pen or perhaps outside) and we give them something fantastic to chew on such as a Kong stuffed with great food, a piece of chicken stuffed in a toilet roll, a bone that is safe for a puppy, a dental chew smeared with cheese, vegemite or peanut butter (no artificial sweeteners!!!) The chewing and licking action will help to calm down the puppy, and quite often they fall asleep and have a good snooze too.
Your puppy will always be interested in chewing something it is natural, so you should always have a toy or appropriate distractions handy. Pre-empt the “snap attack” and redirect before it happens. Give them a toy to attack or redirect the pup by scattering a small amount of food on the ground, which will focus their attention to the ground rather than at your hands.
Remember this biting behaviour often escalates because the pup is overtired. So be sure they get enough sleep. Feed them their meals stuffed in a Kong or in a box they have to gnaw on. This helps to satisfy their need to chew. Pups usually learn more appropriate chew behaviour quite quickly and it naturally subsides when the adult teeth come through.

When the holiday season is fast approaching, you may be planning a trip away without your furry friend. If you haven’t yet found somewhere to board your cat or dog, this article can help you to find the right facility. Below we have listed a few important things to look for, along with tips and questions to ask when looking for suitable boarding for your cat or dog.
It is very important to visit the dog kennel/cattery and check it out for yourself. Make sure the facilities are clean and spacious. If the pet boarding facility won’t allow you to inspect their premises, that should be a signal to take them off your list.
Only go with a company where you feel comfortable with the level of hygiene and care that your pet will receive. Trust your gut if you have a bad feeling about a facility, don’t go with them.
Probably the most important questions to ask when visiting a cat or dog boarding facility, are about the management of medical emergencies.
• Ask what the protocols and procedures are that the facility has in place to manage medical emergencies.
• Most boarding companies have a relationship with a vet that is in close proximity to the facility. Some facilities may even have a vet on site. Ask if they have a vet that is available 24/7.
• Ask if there are staff at the facility that are trained in, and can administer pet first aid.
• Find out how costs will be managed for medical treatment.
• Finally, if your dog is on medication or needs treatment during its stay at the boarding facility, ask them if they are able to provide the medical care that is needed.
• Enquire as to what level of training their staff have received. You want to make sure your pet is in good hands with staff who are trained to manage and care for dogs/cats, in a cat or dog boarding facility.
• Find out how many dogs/cats are boarded in the facility at one time and how many staff will be on duty at any time. As a rule there should be at least 1 staff member for every 10 dogs.
• Ask if there is someone at the facility 24 hours a day. In case of an emergency outside of business hours, you want to make sure the facility is staffed so immediate action can be taken.
When you inspect the enclosure or runs of the pet boarding facility, you want to make sure they are safe and clean and the following questions will be answered:
• What time of the day and how often do the enclosures get cleaned? Will they also be disinfected?
• During your inspection of the facilities, are there any unpleasant or abnormal aromas present?
• What bedding is provided and is it clean and dry? Ask if you can bring your pet’s own bedding and toys that will often help your pet to settle in to the new environment.
• Are the enclosures sheltered from bad weather including rain and extreme temperatures, or perhaps even climate controlled?
• Is the enclosure safe, meaning that there are no dangerous objects and nowhere your pet could hurt itself, and is it secure so your pet can’t escape?
• Does the enclosure have enough space to allow your pet to turn around, move, stretch, and fully rest? Keep in mind dogs need more space than cats.
• Your pet should be boarded in an enclosure by itself and not be left alone with unfamiliar dogs/ cats in the same kennel. They should only be boarded together in the same enclosure if they live in the same household and are used to spending time together in small confined areas.
• For cats is there enough space between litter box and food bowls? Are cats housed away from the dogs?
• How will the facility identify your pet? There have been many cases where pets have been misidentified and mistaken for others.
• Lastly, and importantly, you want to ensure that your pet receives the right care and gets what you have paid for.
• Find out what food the boarding facility feeds its four-legged guests. If you prefer your pet being fed its own diet, we suggest you bring some of his food and feeding instructions when your drop off your pet.
• Ask how and where the food is stored to make sure the food storage facilities and kitchen are clean and hygienic.
• Find out how often your pet will be fed and when.
• When you inspect the place, look out if there is enough fresh water accessible in the enclosures and the play areas.
• Ask how often food bowls are cleaned. They should be cleaned after every meal.
Ask questions about the following:
• What will your pet’s daily schedule be with regards to exercise breaks, toileting etc?
• What will be the level of social interaction for your pet? Cats don’t need that much social interaction but dogs on the other hand are very social animals.
• How will the staff manage stress that your pet may experience due to the change of environment (such as separation anxiety)?
When you inspect the facility, don’t forget to view the play area.
• The area needs to have secure fencing so no dog or cat (not even the smallest) can escape.
• The equipment in the area needs to be in good condition and safe (no broken or hazardous items etc).
• The play area should be clean and should be a good size.
• Is the play area enriched with toys and activity items to keep your pet occupied?
• Ask if the area will be shared with other dogs. And if so, how many will there be at one time?
• Make sure dogs are supervised during group play – all the time. Even though dogs are very social, the situation can often change within a split second and staff need to be there to make sure all dogs are kept safe.
• For cats: Exercising in play areas is often just one cat at a time because most cats don’t like hanging out with other cats they don’t know.
• Some kennels charge extra for play time make sure you consider this when booking.
• When booking, make sure the company breaks down the costs for you so you know exactly what the inclusions in your booking are. Also ask about any extras you want to be included, such as giving medication or medical treatments. Make sure you know exactly what you are paying for.
• Ask what the check-out time is for the day you pick up your pet.
Some kennels offer added services that may be beneficial for your pet during its stay. Ask the company what they provide.
• Board & train: Some facilities offer this service, which means your dog will receive training during its stay. This is a great idea for anyone whose dog could do with a bit more training.
• Grooming: Some facilities offer grooming as an inclusion on departure day. If your pet needs more regular grooming, you should discuss this with the boarding company.
• Webcams: Some boarding facilities have webcams, which allow you to see your pet from wherever you are on this planet.
Make sure you let the staff know about any special requirements your pet may have. This includes its diet, medical treatment/medication, any behavioural issues (such as aggressions towards dogs or people). Have your pet’s vaccinations up to date (C5 for dogs and F3 for cats) and bring the vaccination record on the day you drop your pet off. We recommend you check your pet’s vaccination level well in advance with your vet, to make sure it’s up to date and your pet will be accepted in the boarding facility.
It may sound like bribing but who doesn’t appreciate it if service staff go the extra mile for you? And why not for your pet too? Give the staff a $10 tip or a box of chocolates or cookies when you drop off your dog. People remember nice gestures and it may help ensure they will give your pet an extra ear scratch or a few extra minutes play time here or there.

From time to time, members refer to DOGS NSW matters in which it is not appropriate for our organisation to become involved. For example, disputes between members in relation to the sale of dogs. These are usually private matters to be determined by the contractual agreements between parties. Disputes on such matters should be resolved by the courts and not by DOGS NSW. Members are
requested to refrain from referring such matters to DOGS NSW. They are issues of a private or domestic nature and should properly be resolved by the courts or the Department of Fair Trading.
