APRIL FLOOD DAMAGE TO GROUNDS

The wet weather in April again has caused substantial damage to Orchard Hill grounds, both with soil erosion along with repairs to 650 metres of fencing. Fortunately the damages are not as severe as previous times with floods.

2023 DOGS NSW DOG, PUPPY & NEUTER OF THE YEAR

The DOTY and POTY competition drew an entry of some 130 plus dogs and puppies and was a great event again for all those who qualified. Congratulations to those who won and coverage of the event will appear in the June magazine.

Finally, the month of April has had a very sad time losing some of the most influential and respected ladies: Pauline Suhr, wellknown and respected Labrador Retriever breeder and All Breeds Judge; Sandra McMahon, another well-known and well respected Fox Terrier breeder and All Breeds Judge and Colleen Roberts, well-known and respected in her roles as a past director Director on the DOGS NSW Board of Directors, as a breeder of Borzois and as an All Breeds Judge.

Dear Members,

When renowned American veterinarian and animal behaviourist Dr Ian Dunbar introduced his SIRIUS® Puppy Training in 1982, his positive approach, (ideal for puppies and adult dogs alike), focused on teaching and rewarding dogs for desirable responses, which revolutionised the field. Today, there are few reputable trainers who have not been strongly influenced by Dr Dunbar and his methods. The author of numerous bestselling books, he also developed and wrote the American Kennel Club Gazette’s behaviour column, which was voted “Best Dog Column” numerous times by the Dog Writers Association of America. Based on his recent book, ‘Barking Up the Right Tree - The Science and Practice of Positive Dog Training,’ Dr Dunbar shares his views in an interview based on a series of questions. I’m sure most members will find the information contained in this interview (commencing on page 10), quite insightful. Members also have the opportunity to win a copy of Dr Dunbar’s recent book by entering the competition on page 15.

There is quite a lot of misinformation and/or myths out there about dogs. An article on ‘16 Dog Myths and Misconceptions’ tackles some of these on page 20.

The continuing host of studies conducted by the Companion Animal Network Australia (Australia CAN) since June 2023, demonstrate how pets offer a myriad of physical and mental health benefits for people, such as reducing stress, providing companionship, encouraging social interactions and more. This is true particularly for older adults who often face loneliness and isolation, and rely on their furry, finned or feathered friends to thrive, whether they are living at home or in a residential aged-care setting. Yet, despite 86% of older adults experiencing improved mental and physical health with pets in aged care settings, only 18% of aged care facilities consider allowing residents to keep a companion animal, according to a recent survey. Please read ‘The Need for Pet Friendly Aged Care’ article on page 23 and what you can do to assist on page 25.

The spotlight feature this month is the Bull Terrier and Bull Terrier (Miniature), a loyal and energetic breed known for its unique appearance and lively personality. Bull Terriers are easily recognised by their distinctive egg-shaped head, muscular build and smooth, shiny coat which comes in various colours, the most common being white (often with coloured markings on their ears and eyes). They are typically friendly, affectionate and outgoing. Playful and even goofy at times, Bull Terriers make great companions for families. Due to their strong-willed nature, Bull Terriers require early socialisation and consistent training. They also have a lot of energy and enjoy outdoor activities and exercise, making them well-suited for active individuals or families. Loyal and protective, Bull Terriers make excellent watchdogs. Celebrating 100 years of Veterinarians in NSW

This year marks 100 years since the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1923 came into effect in 1924, with over 13,000 vets registered in the state since.

To celebrate the centenary year, Her Excellency, the Honourable Margaret Beazley, Governor of NSW, and Mr Dennis Wilson held a reception at Government House in NSW on 26 February, attended by veterinarians from around NSW and dignitaries.

Paul Canfield, chair of the Centenary Committee for the Veterinary Practitioners Board of NSW, says it’s an awe-inspiring legacy that vets have built over the past 100 years.

“At the start of the 20th Century, vets mainly had expertise with horses, cattle and sheep, but fastforward to today and we see a profession caring for all animals. The growth in pet practice has been amazing, as has the increasing dedication to native wildlife and zoo animals.

“But vets have not forgotten their traditional roles of protecting animals from the devastating effects of introduced diseases such as foot and mouth disease and rabies. Today, vets work to safeguard NSW from diseases that could ravage animals and sometimes spread to people.”

Canfield explained that the veterinary profession continues to grow in terms of skills and understanding the needs of society and the environment.

“That makes us more proactive to the many challenges facing animals. Sure, we are proud of what we have achieved, such as eradicating tuberculosis, brucellosis and pleuropneumonia in cattle.”

“But we can’t rest on our laurels. We have to remain vigilant, especially in the areas of animal welfare, public health and biosecurity. We also need to ensure that vets have access to the latest developments in animal diagnosis and treatment so that we can better serve animals and their carers.”

Also at the event, the President of the Board, Dr Steven Ferguson, announced the establishment of the inaugural Centenary Awards.

“The Centenary Awards will celebrate and recognise those members of the profession who have gone above and beyond what is asked of them. Those who were inspirational pathfinders or just plain hard workers will be acknowledged. The Centenary Committee is excited and privileged to be reviewing and acknowledging this legacy and will be announcing our deserving recipients later this year,” said Canfield.

Grahame Aggio started his love with the Australian Terrier breed in 2018 when he bought his Australian Terrier pup from Helen Rowney, owner of Redgundi Kennels, Wellington NSW in 2018.

When Grahame retired, he became involved with various organisations and buying a pup gave him the opportunity to diversify. Training for dog obedience came to mind, given that he had done dog training for a year as a volunteer with the RSPCA.

The Australian Terrier pup Redgundi Blue Chip, known to his friends as Banjo, started his career in showing and later Grahame joined the Illawarra Dog Training Club for some serious training. Banjo got in trouble on his first day at training by weeing on the entrance door of the clubhouse.

As Banjo matured and started his conformation career, within an eighteen-month period he gained his championship at the age of two.

As obedience training became more serious, Banjo gained his Community Companion Dog (CCD) title in a short time and moved forward to the Companion Dog title (CD). In the space of fifteen months, he gained his novice title with high scores, between 186 to 192 points.

The work in the Companion Dog Excellence (CDX) is harder. It took Banjo longer to gain his Open title and that was achieved in 2024 at the Bega Vally Kennel and Training Club Trial at Bermagui in February 2024. According to DOGS NSW archives, Banjo is the only Australian Terrier that has gained this title (CDX) within the last thirty years.

As everyone knows the Australian Terrier Breed has a very stubborn streak and a mind of their own. Congratulations to Grahame Aggio for his perseverance and commitment to a task he accomplished and his faith in the Australian Terrier breed.

A Talk with Dr Ian Dunbar

Author of ‘Barking Up the Right Tree: The Science and Practice of Positive Dog Training’

Dr Ian Dunbar is a legendary American veterinarian and animal behaviourist who developed the SIRIUS® Puppy Training method in 1982 that revolutionised how puppies and dogs were trained. His unique lure/reward, off-leash training techniques provided an alternative to leash jerks, alpha rollovers, and other aversive means. The author of numerous bestselling books, including ‘Before and After Getting Your Puppy’, he also developed and wrote the American Kennel Club Gazette’s behaviour column, which was voted “Best Dog Column” numerous times by the Dog Writers Association of America. You will find Dr Dunbar’s answers to the following questions both informative and illuminating.

Q1: How do you teach dogs ESL? (English as a second language)

Teaching ESL English (or Spanish, French, or Swahili) as a Second Language via Lure/Reward Training is as easy as 1-2-3-4. We begin by using languages your dog naturally understands: olfaction and body language - our body language. We use a food lure to focus the dog on our hand movement to teach the dog which specific response is required after each instruction. Holding a piece of kibble between finger and thumb:

1. Say, “Rover, Sit”. Wait half a second and then,

2. Palm upward, move your hand upwards and over the dog’s muzzle,

3. As your dog looks up to follow the food, its butt will hit the deck, and so

4. Praise profusely and maybe offer a piece of kibble as a reward.

Teach ‘down’ by moving your hand, palm downwards, from nose to toes and then, alternate the two - Puppy Pushups! After just half a dozen repetitions, try luring with an empty hand. Voila, the hand movement has become a hand signal. After another half a dozen repetitions, your dog will learn that each word you say predicts a specific hand signal and eventually your dog will respond appropriately after your verbal instruction, but before your hand signal. Your dog is beginning to learn the meaning of the words ‘Sit’ and ‘Down’.

Teaching dogs the meaning of words in our language, such as Come, Sit, Down, Stand, Stay, Watch, Rollover, Follow, Heel, Hustle and Steady, opens up communication channels so that we may give clear instructions. Moreover, testing response-reliability percentages of each instruction gives us a combined index of the dog’s comprehension of the instructions and motivation to respond.

Q2. Why are ease and speed of training so important?

It goes without saying that training should be enjoyable. When training is FUN, dogs and owners want to play The Training Game. Tail wags, smiles and laughter all around. Also, training should be quick and easy. If training is made to be too complicated, many owners will fail to succeed. Similarly, if training is too time consuming, owners might be less likely to devote sufficient time.

Training is not just about training dogs, equally important is teaching people how to train their dogs. Dog trainers should bear in mind that what may come so naturally and effortlessly to them, given their experience and expertise, is often quite challenging for novice dog owners, especially children. If training is not quick, easy and enjoyable, owners might become frustrated and give up and their dog would miss out on an education. Not fair!

Additionally, there is one other criterion that I think is super important when it comes to evaluating different dog training techniques: dog training must be effective. Being a scientist, I check the effectiveness of my methods every step of the way, calculating response-reliability, speed of recalls, duration of stays, etc. to provide progressive, motivational ‘Proof of Progress’ to the owner.

It is a popularly held notion that training is training, and a trainer is a trainer. In reality, given a hundred dog trainers, each one would use different techniques, some that vary considerably in terms of ease, speed, effectiveness and enjoyment. I talk about this at great length in the book.

Q3. What is Lure/Reward Training?

Luring teaches puppies, dogs and all animals specifically what we would like them to do following each verbal instruction, so that we can reward them for doing it, reinforce the association between our request and desired response, and create dogs who want to come, follow, lie down, stand and rollover (for examination) when we ask.

Additionally, Lure/Reward Training formalises phasing out our reliance on our training tools: Food Lures and Food Rewards. Food lures are dispensed with entirely as soon as the dog understands the meaning of hand signals and verbal requests. Food rewards are drastically reduced to vastly increase their reinforcing power and to capitalise on the use of much more powerful life-rewards, such as “Go Play,” “Fetch,’ “Tug,” or “Hide’n’Seek.”

Moreover, since initial training is conducted off-leash, owners quickly master off-leash control, whereupon it’s easy to snap a leash on a trained dog for walks. Otherwise, owners would have to navigate the perilous transition from first training on-leash and then attempting to do so off-leash. It is so important that dogs respond reliably when off-leash and you don’t have food.

We would never want a dog’s compliance to become contingent on the owner having food in their hand or on their person. As parents and politicians know, bribing seldom works (for long). Bribing would comprise trying to coerce an unwilling and unfocused dog to act against their will by offering the promise of a food reward upfront.

Lure-Reward Training is quite simply, the best! It is the easiest, most effective and absolutely the quickest way to teach ESL to a willing and focused dog. When dogs understand our language, the dog-human relationship improves in leaps and bounds.

For unwilling, unfocused, or hyperactive, adolescent dogs, I generally switch to a quick session of Wait & Reward Training to teach the dogs to calm down, get a grip, come close, stay close, sit, lie down and pay riveted attention. Once the dogs are back on Planet Earth, I go back to teaching ESL and motivating them to the max. via Lure/Reward Training.

Q4. Do we have a non-aversive means to quickly reduce and eliminate undesirable behaviour AND get the dog back on track?

Absolutely! In fact, just by using a single word of instruction and without having to raise our voice.

It all depends on our perspective of training: Do we want to treat our best friend like our worst adversary in the educational arena? Or, do we want to teach and motivate dogs how to act? Instead of causing fear or pain under the guise of education and training, think Kindergarten teachers. Think of grandparents, who may have made many mistakes with their children but now excel with their grandkids. Think Golf: Which would you prefer after your drive slices over a forest and plops into an unseen swamp? A shock? Or verbal guidance on how to improve your swing?

Q5. What is an example of a non-aversive punishment?

Whenever a dog owner tells me their dog does something they don’t like, I always encourage them to ask themselves the question: “If this is wrong, what is right?” If you don’t like what your dog has chosen to do, how would you like them to act instead? Give that action a name, teach the dog to respond on cue, motivate the dog with life-rewards to want to comply, test the dog’s response-reliability (comprehension and motivation) and then use that instruction as guidance. win a copy of

Teaching dogs ESL (English as a Second Language) not only facilitates giving clear instructions, so that dogs know what we would like them to do but also facilitates giving dogs instructive verbal guidance when they err. A single word may communicate two vital pieces of information: 1. Stop what you’re doing; and 2. Do this instead.

For example, just a few decades ago, dog training books were full of aversive ‘solutions’ for behaviour problems. Dogs caught most grief for jumping-up. All these suggestions for a behaviour that has been heavily reinforced by the owners, albeit unintentionally since puppyhood. Whenever the cute little Newfie pup jumped up to greet their person, the owner would reflexively bend over to pet the little tyke. The pup’s only crime; he grew!

So, if this is ‘wrong’, what is right? I keep asking the owner, ‘How would you like your dog to greet people?’ until they arrive at a workable solution such as, “Well, to sit, I guess” and I reply, “Brilliant” and I mean it.” OK let’s teach your dog that the default greeting for humans is to sit, and remain sitting. Takes about 20 minutes to troubleshoot.

We don’t want to inhibit a dog from being a dog, we want to teach the dog how, when, where, and with what to act like a dog in our human environment. For example, “Chewtoy,” “Outside,” “Toilet,” “Go Pee,” “Shush,” “Speak,” “Bed,” “Settle,” ... and “Sit”. In fact, a simple, reliable Sit instantly resolves a good 90% of undesirable behaviours. In a sense, a reliable, reward-trained request to Sit is by far the most effective (non-aversive) punishment. The Sit eliminates most other undesirable behaviours.

Once the dog understands the meaning of each word, we can use several in a sequence. My favourite instruction to my Malamute, Phoenix, was, “Phoenix, Come Here, Sit, Take this (a note) and Go to ... Jamie.” (Phoenix understood the words in italics.) — Malamute Mail! Phoenix would search high and low for Jamie, indoors and outdoors, and sit to deliver the message, “Jamie, Dinner is ready.”

My most common evening instruction to dogs would probably be, “Duke, Shush, Find your Kong, Come on the Couch, and Settle.” Duke would grab the nearest Kong, turn, take a flying leap and plonk in a Curl-Stay position by my side.

Q6. What is the Right Tree?

It’s funny, when I started this recent book the working title was “Barking Up the Wrong Tree” because I wanted to emphasise how people tend to focus on all that’s ‘wrong’. We tend to take all that’s good for granted and focus on the one or two little things that dogs do ‘wrong’. Every dog I’ve ever met is ‘good’ 99% of the time if you observe and quantify their behaviour throughout the day. However, if they chew one shoe, bark a bit, or have one short, argy-bargy with another dog, they’re suddenly labelled a “Bad Dog”, even though they’ve spent hours quietly settled down, or playing with other dogs while being ignored by their humans.

But then I was about to do the same with my book. How silly was that? I was about to write a book about NOT being negative! I want people to be positive when training their dog, so I should be positive about teaching people and writing a book about it. Was I bad! I was so pleased that my publisher changed the title to “Barking Up the Right Tree” and have the book focus on all that’s good about dogs and dog training and how to teach people to quickly, easily, effectively and enjoyably reward-train their dog and teach oodles of fun stuff. Dog-friendly, owner-friendly, fun and games - dog training.

Q7. You say dog training has lost its voice. What do you mean?

Verbal instructions, ongoing verbal feedback and guidance were the natural way of training dogs, horses and farm stock prior to the 20th Century. When dog training was formalised for the military, police, working and obedience dogs, instructions became ‘commands’ and ‘hearty praise’ was seldom heard. I helped introduce the natural way in the 70s and by the 90s and early 00s, Lure/Reward Training was rocking once more. However, some trainers insisted that luring was cheating (not pure training) and that dogs ‘learn better’ if they work it out by themselves without instructions. And then many trainers replaced praise with a ‘click’ and a ‘treat’. So, dog training lost our voice.

But now, it’s high time to re-introduce our voice to dog training so that we give clear instructions as to how we would like our dogs to act, praise our dogs from the heart when they do so, and especially, offer specific verbal guidance to help our dogs get back on track when they err.

Dogs are dogs and they learn our language very differently from the way a child might learn. I found it entirely fascinating and illuminating researching what dogs actually understand from our instructions and the findings radically changed how I teach and proof verbal requests. For example, with an instruction as simple as “Sit”, response-reliability is highest when the dog is right in front of you, but drops off precipitously with distance, location and situation; for example, from indoors to outdoors, from on-leash to off-leash, and whether the dog can see your face. Many dogs fail to respond to verbal commands when the owner’s back is turned, so why would we expect a dog to respond if the dog’s back were turned, and they were thirty metres away, chasing a cat?

What I miss the most though in dog training is the sad lack of praise. When I praise in short responses, I try to use at least three adjectives, such as, “Brilliant! Stunning! Exceptional!” I wish I had video of me praising little Oso for pooping on walks. Too hilarious. Passers-by would roar with laughter. But I was unashamed and truly grateful that he had pooped on cue, was now (temporarily) empty and had never pooped in the house, on the lawn, or in my garden.

When reinforcing longer-duration behaviours such as eyecontact, stays, long recalls, walking on-leash and heeling, my feedback resembles a running commentary. Behaviour i s always changing and so I try to modulate my praise to reflect the changes in quality of behaviours, offering immediate verbal guidance should things begin to drift.

I think verbal guidance is the biggie. Teaching dogs the meaning of words and testing comprehension, so we have a convenient and personal means of offering verbal guidance when needed, thus rendering any type of aversive feedback simply ... unnecessary — inferior in effectiveness and decidedly old hat.

Q8. What is more important for a dog’s behavioural development — nature or nurture, genes or experience?

This is, of course, a centuries-old question with different answers depending on the audience and the age of the dog. If the audience were college students, I would spend a few weeks describing that you cannot have one without the other, and the various complex interactions between the two. Of course, genetic heredity gives us a dog and a particular breed or type, plus a template for how the dog would likely develop, all things being equal.

But all things are never equal: we also have social heredity. Rotties grow up with Rotties and Rottie people and Papillons grow up with Papillons and Papillon people. Moreover, two peas-in-a-pod puppies of the same breed but growing up in different homes, become like chalk and cheese.

However, if the question were asked by a breeder, I would ask about the dog. If the breeder is considering a prospective mating pair, it’s all about Genes! Genes! Genes! and by far, the most important consideration is confirming that both dogs are descended from long-lived forebears. Longevity is the single best index of overall physical and behavioural health. Don’t we all want our dogs to live a long and healthy life?

If, on the other hand, the eggs have already been fertilised and so, we have zygotes, then the Gene Team has made its play, and from now on it’s all about environmental and experiential factors: social heredity, neonatal and young puppy handling and desensitisation, early environmental enrichment, safe socialisation with loads of unfamiliar people, (especially children and men) in the breeding kennel, the pup’s new home prior to 12 weeks of age and, of course, Lure/Reward Training to teach ESL so we can talk to our puppy and they understand what we say.

Q9. What do you most hope people will take away from the book?

There are so many things, but top of the list: there is no reason why your puppy shouldn’t live to be 10-15 years old if you carefully search for a breeder that only breeds male dogs who live to be 10 and male and female dogs whose parents and grandparents all lived to be 10. Yes, there are breeders who selectively breed for longevity and if you insist on longevity, there will soon be many more. Also, while searching for a breeder, enquire whether the puppies have been housetrained, chew toy-trained and crate-trained indoors around people (and at least taught to Come, Sit, Lie Down, and Rollover), or whether they grew up in an outdoor kennel and run with limited human contact.

There is no reason why your puppy should ever develop adolescent-onset fear of unfamiliar people (especially children and men), unfamiliar dogs, or otherwise scary stimuli, or develop separation anxiety if you:

• Invite loads of people to your house to handle and train your pup during your pup’s first month at home, i.e., prior to 12 weeks of age — Puppy Parties! Make sure all invitees leave their outdoor shoes outside to prevent transmission of puppy diseases from infected urine and faeces.

• Have a confinement schedule for your puppy when you are at home, so you may predict elimination and be able to teach your pup to eliminate on cue and to teach your pup to thoroughly enjoy quiet times alone with a stuffed chew toy to prepare your pup for times as an adolescent or adult when left at home alone for longer periods.

• Safely expose your young pup to all the potentially scary stimuli in our outside world, such as busy street noises, crowds of people and other dogs. Don’t let your pup walk or sniff the possibly infected ground; carry, cart, or drive your pup. Sit on a park bench, or go near a busy shopping centre and let people meet and greet your pup and then offer a couple of pieces of kibble.

• Enroll in an off-leash puppy class as early as possible to bump-start puppy socialisation and play so that the pup learns social savvy with unfamiliar puppies and Bite Inhibition (from play-biting).

Embrace Lure/Reward Training and teach ESL to open communication channels with your pup so you may give clear instructions as to what to do and offer further instructional, verbal guidance should they improvise. “If this is ‘wrong’ (from your viewpoint); what is ‘right’ (from your viewpoint)? When dogs misbehave, always instruct them precisely what you would like them to do instead. Any type of aversive feedback is unnecessary and when administered by people, usually ineffective.

View training from your dog’s point of view and make full use of life-rewards, the activities your dog really loves. Integrate very short training interludes into walks (every 23 metres) and play (every half-minute or so) interactive games such as Fetch and Tug (as often as you like). Most training interludes may be as short as a quick Sit-Stay-Watch, just to check that your dog is clued in.

Always focus on your dog’s good behaviour. Praise your dog: when they look at you, approach and stay close of their own accord; when they are calm (not hyperactivating), settled with a chew toy (not your shoes or socks) and quiet (not barking). Praise and pet your dog every time they come when called. Praise your dog every time you return home. Enjoy loving head-strokes, behind-the-ear scratches, languorous chest massages and belly rubs and snuggles. Delight in your dog. Those that we grieve tomorrow are alive and well today. One day, your dog will no longer be there for snuggles. Relish your dog now.

Distinguished Service and Life Membership Awards

These awards exist to recognise the valuable contribution of individuals to the current and future existence of the organisation. In particular, the Awards System, described below, is intended to recognise a wide range of factors, more than simply by being a long-term Member. It also seeks to create awards so that significant contributions to DOGS NSW may be recognised appropriately.

The two Awards available to Members are:

1. Distinguished Service Award

2. Honorary Life Membership

The award of Life Membership is the highest honour that DOGS NSW can bestow on an individual. It is conferred on those who have made an exceptional contribution to the existence and advancement of the organisation. The aim is to make life membership hard to obtain so that it is respected by members and valued by recipients

PROCEDURE

Members wishing to nominate a fellow Member for either Award may apply to the Office for the appropriate Nomination Form.

Each form must be completed by two Members, in good standing and lodged with the Office prior to the advertised closing date for nominations.

All nominations are to be treated in the strictest confidence.

Nominations will be referred to the Honours Working Party for due consideration to be followed by the Working Party’s recommendations to the Board of Directors.

AWARD CRITERIA

1. Distinguished Service Award

The Nominee is to be a continuous financial member of DOGS NSW for a minimum period of 15 years.

The Nominee must have served the dog world in an effective and meaningful way; such as Member of an Affiliate, a Committee Member, a Steward, an Event Organiser and any of the other many contributing roles which require a considerable degree of personal endeavour, involvement and dedication.

2. Honorary Life Membership

The Nominee is to be a continuous financial member of DOGS NSW for a minimum period of 25 years.

The Nominee must have demonstrated significant, sustained and high quality service enhancing the reputation and future of the overall organisation particularly to the administration, development and promotion of the canine world.

Exceptional Criteria

Should a member lack the membership precondition, but it can be demonstrated that the member has provided outstanding and meritorious services to DOGS NSW, then a nomination may well be warranted.

NOTE:

The members of the Honours Working Party are of the view that should a nomination not be successful, further nominations for that nominee should not be considered for a minimum period of three years.

Membership Renewals for 2024/2025

Members are reminded that the 2024/2025 Membership Renewals were emailed on 1st April 2024.

The renewal invoice is for the membership year 1st July 2024 to 30th June 2025.

If you did not receive your renewal email on the 1st of April 2024, please check your SPAM / JUNK folder for the email invoice link. Those Members that don’t have an email address will receive their renewal invoice by post during April.

By renewing your DOGS NSW membership between 1st April and 31st May 2024, you will automatically go into the draw for one of nine (9) membership reimbursements. That is, five (5) DOGS NSW Members who renew in April, and four (4) DOGS NSW Members who renew in May this year, will have their 2024-2025 membership payment fully refunded. Winners will be drawn at the end of each month and announced in the Weekly Woof and contacted by phone.

The following standards apply to ALL SHOWS AND TRIALS

• One exhibit per Dogs Australia approved entry form

• Photocopied or carbon entries are NOT acceptable

• Late or phone entries will NOT be accepted

• Payment by mail MUST be made by cheque or money order DO NOT send cash in the mail

• Bitches in oestrum may be shown EXCEPT in obedience, or if specified on show schedule

• If a Club needs to contract a “replacement” judge they are advised to take note of DOGS NSW Regulation Part II - Show, Section 12.6 (c), which relates to an exhibitor requesting a refund

• In accordance with DOGS NSW Regulations Part II - Show, Section 20.1, “Limitation of Exhibits for Judging”, Clubs reserve the right to alter or amend judging arrangements and to substitute judges if deemed necessary under this Regulation. However this does not negate the Club’s responsibilities in accordance with Part II - Show, Section 12.6 (c).

Bull Terrier / Bull Terrier (Miniature)

History

The Bull Terrier, as we know it today, has its origins in England in the early 1800s. The breed was well-established as early as 1830 and was mainly the result of crossing the old-style Bulldog with several different Terrier breeds. One of the first mentions of the Bull and Terrier in Australia was in the mid -1830s. There is also mention of an imported Bull Terrier in Queensland in 1852, and in 1862 the first dog show in Australia was held in Hobart with 91 dogs entered including Bull Terriers.

In 1886 several Bull Terriers were imported into Victoria and NSW. With the popularity of the new sport of dog shows, a pure white dog with cleaner lines and longer in the head became very fashionable. The colour was introduced by selective breeding to the old-style, coloured Bull Terrier.

, The first Bull Terrier (Miniature)s were imported into Australia by Wally Webster in the early 1960s. A turning point for the breed was when Lavinia (Busty) Graham-Weall, President of the UK Bull Terrier Club at the time, judged in Australia at the Pal International in 1970. A record entry from across Australia set the breed on a new trajectory.

In 2023, there were three Australian-bred dogs competitively exhibited in the Bull Terrier Country Competition in Holland. Recently, an Australian dog was exported to the UK, where he has won 9 Challenge Certificates already, and has just been named Bull Terrier of the Year by the UK Club! This shows how far the breed in Australia has progressed.

Characteristics

It is said that the Bull Terrier is the “Gladiator of the canine race” and possesses great courage. It also must be symmetrical and active as well as amenable to discipline. Often the clown, Bull Terriers will win your heart with their attention-seeking antics but loving nature. Many a judge will agree with this assessment when they recall handling Bullies at shows!

A unique feature of the breed is its downward-faced, egg-shaped head. The head should be strong and deep, right to the end of the muzzle. Viewed from the front it should be egg-shaped and completely filled. The breed’s profile curves gently, from the top of the skull to the tip of its nose and its eyes should be small, triangular, as dark as possible and give a piercing glint. In fact, the whole dog should be a series of graceful curves: neck into shoulder, slight arching over loin, graceful underline, turn of stifle.

Appearance

Strongly built, compact and muscular, the Bull Terrier is wellbalanced, sound and active with a keen, determined and intelligent expression. It has been said that the Bull Terrier is an honest dog, as it is difficult to disguise any faults via clever grooming, and the virtues are obvious.

The modern Bull Terrier is a medium-sized dog with no weight or size restrictions according to the breed standard. In the early days, smaller dogs weighing under 10kg were quite common and have now evolved as the Bull Terrier (Miniature). These two varieties of the breed share a common breed standard with a height recommendation for the Miniature being the only deviation: it should not exceed a height of 35.5cm.

The breed comes in various colours including white, white with head marks, brindle, black brindle, red, tricolour and fawn. In coloured Bull Terriers, colour should predominate. There are no other requirements within the standard regarding colour markings.

Please note that there are NO disqualifications in the breed standard. “Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog.” 1.

1. Dogs Australia Bull Terrier Breed Standard

Health & Maintenance

The Bull Terrier is a relatively healthy breed but can suffer from deafness, heart and kidney disease and some skin conditions. An eye disease called Primary Lens Luxation was prevalent but found only in the Bull Terrier (Miniature). In 2009 the gene marker was discovered for the disease; this now allows breeders the opportunity to eradicate the disease using a simple DNA test. Reputable breeders test breeding stock for known health issues.

The Bull Terrier’s coat is short and requires only basic maintenance. If your dog spends a lot of time in the sun, be sure to apply sunscreen. The breed should also be tested for heart and kidney problems. Regular exercise and play sessions will help to prevent destructive behaviour brought on by boredom.

Owners should be aware that the breed has an extremely high threshold for pain and may not always show symptoms of illness. Life expectancy is between 12 and 14 years.

Temperament & Suitability

The breed possesses an even temperament and is highly intelligent but can also be stubborn. Though some may not believe this, several Bullies have obedience titles!

The Bull Terrier is happiest when living with a family and makes a wonderful companion, however, as with any breed, care should be taken around small children. When the dogs are younger, they are still very powerful and can be quite boisterous.

The breed is equally happy on a rural property as it is in an apartment. The Bull Terrier can be independent-minded, and, as such, is still a Terrier, so it should be socialised from an early age.

16 Dog Myths & MISCONCEPTIONS

Dogs live in our homes and sleep in our beds, yet we misunderstand them all the time. After all, dogs and humans don’t speak the same language. And even worse, loads of misinformation gets passed around. So how do you really know what’s going on with your canine best friend? Is that wagging tail a sign of happiness? Does your dog really see in black and white? Read on to bust some common dog myths.

1. Whenever dogs wag their tail they are happy

Tail wagging is a form of communication for the dog to tell you how they feel. However, this is not just limited to happy emotions. The two most common reasons for a dog to wag its tail are either due to them being happy or nervous. Knowing what your dog is feeling is one of the best ways to strengthen the owner-dog relationship.1.

2. Whenever a dog’s nose is dry he is sick

You can’t judge a dog’s well-being simply by the hydration of their nose. Just like you can’t tell the wellbeing of a human simply by looking at the way the hair looks. It is much more important to look for obvious signs of sickness: swelling, continuously runny nose, vomiting or lack of appetite.1.

3. Letting my dog run around in our backyard is enough exercise

Just like humans, dogs need physical and mental stimulation. Simply running will quickly bore your dog and he won’t get much mental or physical stimulation. As such, the best way to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy is by going on walks and taking him out for exercise, plus stimulating him with games and toys. This way your dog will be healthy and so will you.1.

4. Putting garlic in your dog’s food will get rid of worms

There is no scientific proof that putting garlic in your dog’s food does much more than give him garlic breath. So, if you’re trying to keep vampires out of your home; sure go ahead, but if you want to get rid of worms it’s not going to do much. Better to stick to a proper worm treatment and consult with your vet if you’re not sure which one to choose.1.

5. Human Food is Safe for Dogs

While your trash can or bin won’t fill as quickly, you could be feeding your dog harmful bones, high-fat content foods and even ingredients that are toxic to your dog. Cooked bones are especially known for splitting and splintering, and just imagine what those splinters could do to your dog’s internal organs. Other issues involve gastrointestinal problems and pancreatic concerns.

Table scraps are empty calories for dogs. They need precisely balanced nutrition for their specific life stage and special needs to stay healthy. Do your dog a favour and stick to dog food and treats. If you want to reduce waste, try composting instead.1.

6. One Dog Year Equals Seven Human Years

You might have heard that one year of a dog’s life is equivalent to seven years of a human’s life, but that dog myth is simply not true. You can’t calculate dog years to human years that way. One-year-old dogs are not at the same stage of physical and mental development as seven-year-old children; they are more like fifteen-year-old teenagers. Plus, different breeds develop and age differently. For example, smaller dogs, like toy breeds, develop faster and live longer than larger breeds and therefore are considered seniors at a later age. 2.

7. Dogs See in Black and White

Dogs don’t see the same rainbow of colours that most humans do, but that doesn’t mean they see in black and white. Dogs can see colour; it’s just a more muted world of shades of blue, yellow and grey. While people have three types of colour-detecting cells in their eyes, known as cones, dogs only have two. As a result, canine vision is similar to that of a person with red-green colour blindness. 2.

8. Shaving Your Dog’s Fur in the Summer Cools Them Down

Though humans wear fewer clothes in hot weather, dogs don’t benefit from a reduction in their amount of fur; in fact, for most breeds, shaving down a coat has the opposite effect. The double coat on breeds like the Golden Retriever or Siberian Husky actually keeps the dog cool in hot temperatures and shaving it down can lead to overheating. And if you shave your dog too close to the skin, it puts them at risk for insect bites, sunburn and skin cancer. 2.

9. All Dogs Can Naturally Swim

Members of certain breeds, like Portuguese Water Dogs, may like swimming but it’s a myth that all dogs are as equally at home in the water. Not every dog can naturally swim. Some need a little help to feel comfortable and others, such as dogs with barrelshaped chests, flat faces, or short legs, have the wrong body shapes entirely. If your dog is unsure in the water, a life jacket can boost their confidence and keep them safe. 2.

10. Dogs Like Hugs

It’s almost impossible to resist petting or hugging an adorable dog. It makes you feel good. But do dogs feel as warm and fuzzy about these displays of affection? Absolutely not. Most dogs dislike hugs because it makes them feel trapped or annoyed. In fact, dogs often pin each other down when fighting, so hugs can cause stress. For safety and your dog’s comfort, teach your dog to tolerate your hugs or find a more dog-friendly way to express your love. 2.

11. Dogs Show Guilt When They’ve Done Something Wrong

Dogs feel all kinds of emotions, so it’s no wonder people interpret their dog’s sheepish look as guilt. However, whether dogs feel guilt is still an open question. When your dog has done something wrong, they might feel bad about it, but the tucked tail and pulled-back ears are really an appeasement gesture. Your dog is reacting to your anger, at the moment or anticipated, and trying to calm you down. 2.

12. Dogs hate Cats!

It’s a cliché that dogs and cats don’t get along. Dogs and cats have different languages and instincts, which can complicate their relationship. For example, cats often run from dogs, which is a surefire way to engage a dog in a game of chase. But it’s not a lost cause. Some breeds are naturally good with cats. And for the rest, training and proper socialisation can turn dogs and cats into good friends, especially when introduced at an early age. 2.

13. Rubbing your Puppy’s Nose in an Accident helps with Toilet Training

Old-school potty-training advice advises rubbing your puppy‘s nose in an accident to teach them they’ve done something wrong. Unfortunately, rather than making the connection between their accident and the punishment, your puppy will learn you’re harsh and unpredictable. Dogs live in the moment, so unless you catch them in the act, there’s nothing to do but clean up the mess. If you catch your puppy mid-accident, calmly interrupt them, then take them to their potty spot and reward them when they finish the job. 2.

14. Dogs eat grass when they are sick

It is true that some dogs will eat grass when they are ill or nauseous. However, many dogs eat grass for other reasons including boredom, displacement behaviours and opportunity. Some dogs just like eating grass because it is fun. This is not a problem as long as the grass has not been treated. So, as long as your dog just likes eating small amounts of grass and it does not make him sick, there is no need to stop this behaviour. 2.

15. A dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human mouth

This myth probably originated from the observation when dogs lick their wounds, they seem to heal faster. The reason they heal faster is not because dogs have a clean mouth, but because the process of licking debrides away damaged tissue and stimulates blood flow which, in turn, promotes faster healing. The fact the dogs do not brush their teeth twice a day and 80 to 90% of dogs over three years of age have some form of periodontal disease, it is unlikely your dog’s mouth is cleaner than yours. 3.

16. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks

This is definitely not true. Older dogs can learn new tricks, they just don’t always want to. Like us, as dogs age, they can be less interested in learning new activities and are less responsive to training. Remember also, some older dogs have decreased vision and hearing or joint issues which can make training a little more difficult. With time and patience, an older dog should be able to learn any trick a younger dog can, within the limitations of their physical ability. 3.

The Need for PetFriendly Aged Care

The Companion Animal Network Australia (CANA) Aged Care Survey results spell out the need for urgent action to keep older people and their pets together to ease loneliness and prevent unnecessary surrenders.

A host of studies demonstrate how pets offer a myriad of physical and mental health benefits for people, such as reducing stress, providing companionship, encouraging social interactions and more. This is true, particularly for older adults who often face loneliness and isolation and rely on their furry, finned or feathered friends to thrive, whether they are living at home or in a residential aged care setting.

Yet, despite 86% of older adults experiencing improved mental and physical health with pets in aged care settings, only 18% of aged care facilities consider allowing residents to keep a companion animal, according to national animal welfare charity Companion Animal Network Australia’s 2023 Aged Care Survey: Status of Pets in Aged Care.

Also, when it comes to older adults living at home, 91% of those with pets who receive a government-funded Home Care Package (HCP) do not receive support to help care for their companion animal, according to survey results. Trish Ennis, CEO of Companion Animal Network (Australia CAN or CANA), says, “While we’ve always recognised the benefits of owning a pet, our survey shows the Australian government and aged care providers have been slow to understand the enduring value of the human-animal bond for older people.”

Through its Pet Friendly Aged Care division, Australia CAN works to preserve the bond between people and their beloved pets by keeping them together for as long as it provides the best health outcome for the animal and their owner.

“There’s often a catastrophic, emotional harm caused when older people are forced to give up their pets upon moving into an aged care home, resulting in their much-loved animals being surrendered to shelters across the country,” says Ms Ennis.

“People are putting their lives on the line when they refuse to move into aged care because they can’t bring their pet with them. If people were allowed to keep their pets, aged care take-up by older people will increase and the number of pets being surrendered to animal shelters will decrease.”

“I think all aged care facilities should have pets... It is no fun giving up everything to move into aged care, especially when you have nowhere for your pet to go to.

Giving away a table and chair is easy, but giving up a living pet is sometimes impossible.”

In-home Aged Care – urgent need for pet care support

CANA’s Aged Care report also reveals older people who depend on in-home assisted living and the daily companionship of their animals lack the government support they desperately need, says Ms Ennis.

The survey reveals that 61% of older adults live alone and 74% of older adults with pets say their animals provide companionship and reduce loneliness. Whilst 40% of older adults who receive a HCP have pets, only 9% of these pet owners receive pet care support, such as walking their dog (64% need help) and taking their pet to the vet (62% need help).

“Our survey shows there is an urgent need to support pet ownership for older Australians who choose to live independently,” says Ms Ennis.

“The health and well-being benefits of pet ownership are measurable and indisputable. The CHSP (Commonwealth Home Support Programme) and HCP can be extended to determine and secure the necessary assistance for a person to live independently with their pet, by ensuring services are offered to support pet health and well-being.”

“Increasing the number of pet-friendly, in-home, aged care support will also help to prevent animals from being euthanised or surrendered to shelters and maximise the physical and emotional health of animal-loving, older people.”

What are the barriers to pet ownership?

According to CANA’s Aged Care Survey, 60% of people say the main barriers to pet ownership are a lack of education among aged care providers on the benefits of pet ownership and a lack of funding to facilitate design changes to accommodate pets being a major challenge.

“Education and knowledge about benefits of pet ownership and accommodating pets are the key factors to allaying fears and opening up opportunities,” says Ms Ennis.

“The inclusion of pets is a great business model as aged care facilities and home care companies that include pets are in greater need and their clients and communities are happier and healthier.”

DISPUTES

From time to time, members refer to DOGS NSW matters in which it is not appropriate for our organisation to become involved. For example, disputes between members in relation to the sale of dogs. These are usually private matters to be determined by the contractual agreements between parties. Disputes on such matters should be resolved by the courts and not by DOGS NSW.

Members are requested to refrain from referring such matters to DOGS NSW. They are issues of a private or domestic nature and should properly be resolved by the courts or the Department of Fair Trading.
