Children’s Cancer Welfare Services Inc, a Registered Charity, was formed in 1998 and through their fundraising events, they offer direct financial and practical support to families (particularly from rural areas) with children suffering from cancer. The Children’s Cancer Charity Dog Club recently held their 25th and 26th All Breeds Championship Shows at Orchard Hills, the ‘Australasian Cup Challenge’ to assist with fundraising and Committee members were well rewarded with great sponsorship, exhibitors and a wonderful profit. Dr Helen Nicholson from Whole Family Health discusses how Hydrotherapy can benefit your dog in a most informative article. As an animal physiotherapist, Dr Nicholson says that “When most people think of hydrotherapy, they think of swimming. However, there’s a lot more science to it than that. Hydrotherapy is NOT swimming! In fact, soon after injury or surgery we often avoid swimming as it puts joints through a large range of movement without activating the muscles that stabilise and protect them”. The spotlight feature for this month is the magnificent Samoyed. They are smart, social, mischievous dogs who demand love and attention and were bred for hard work in the harshest and coldest of climates. Powerful, agile, tireless and impervious to cold, Samoyeds are dropdead gorgeous but highly functional. Even their most delightful feature, a perpetual smile, has a practical function: the mouth’s upturned corners keep them from drooling, preventing icicles from forming on the face. Children’s Cancer Welfare Services Inc, a Registered Charity, was formed on 27 February 1998 to offer direct financial and practical support to families (particularly from rural areas) with children suffering from cancer. The scope of the services supplied is to the whole of New South Wales, with a particular interest in rural areas.
The range of services offered (but not limited to) are as follows:
• Financial assistance for travel and accommodation for a parent accompanying a sick child being treated at a metropolitan hospital.
• Financial support for and assistance in arranging childcare for children while parent(s) are attending hospital with a sick child.
• Where deemed necessary, financial assistance for minor home modification and appliances to enable care at home of children with cancer.
• Financial assistance with a deceased child’s funeral expenses for families in needy circumstances.
• Access to, and payment for, therapy sessions for individuals and families requiring emotional support.
• Development and funding for support groups for families in rural areas with a child suffering with cancer.
• Assisting children with cancer to attend Camp Quality and other supportive events.
In recent years, the Charity’s Committee has been working very closely with the staff at Ronald McDonald House located at Westmead Children’s Hospital and support has been provided to families staying at the house with children who are sick with cancer who find that they need practical assistance whilst away from their home.
The Committee has also undertaken the support of the Research Unit of the Oncology Department at the Children’s Hospital, Westmead, by making donations, now totalling $275,000, towards research into many facets of childhood cancer.
To enable the Committee to provide this assistance, funds are raised in several ways through donations from various individuals, groups, organisations, clubs and others who care about those less fortunate than themselves.
Through the annual Australasian Challenge Cup (first run in 1997), one of the major fundraising events in the Charity’s calendar, the funds raised this year (over the two shows) totalled approximately $6,500.00. The shows were held on the 4th and 5th of March 2023 at the Bill Spilstead Complex. On behalf of the Committee of the Children’s Cancer Welfare Services Inc, we wish to extend to our supporters and exhibitors our sincere thanks and appreciation for their time and assistance in helping us to make this year’s event another successful one.

Hydrotherapy literally means “water therapy”. It is an excellent tool that we are trained to use as qualified physiotherapists for a wide range of conditions such as arthritis, poor mobility, bone, joint and muscle injuries, spinal injuries, plus some brain and nerve conditions.
The benefits of hydrotherapy for dogs include:
• Reduced load weight on painful or healing body parts from body weight;
• Exercise can be started earlier in the rehabilitation process than on land, with less muscle effort required and less weight on joints;
• Water provides extra support to joints, reducing the chance of injury to ligaments, tendons and muscles;
• Option to still carry out an exercise program where land-based exercise is limited or contraindicated;
• Buoyancy assists the dog with difficult movements;
• The use of drag (the water’s resistance to the dog’s movement) to strengthen muscles;
• Prevention of muscle wastage;
• Improvement in muscular bulk and strength;
• Increased cardiovascular fitness and endurance;
• Reduction in stiffness and improvement in joint range of motion;
• Increased soft-tissue length;
• Reduction of any muscle spasm and activation of weak muscles;
• Allows a gradual progression towards more normal function;
• Reduces swelling via hydrostatic pressure (the pressure of the water) which is higher the deeper you go;
• Promotion of relaxation, especially in warm water. A relaxed dog is a happier dog who is likely experiencing less pain;
• Promotion of healing and lots of other benefits of increased circulation.
Hydrotherapy is NOT swimming - there’s a lot more science to it than that. In fact, soon after injury or surgery we often avoid swimming as it puts joints through a large range of movement without activating the muscles that stabilise and protect them. In an injured dog, this may actually cause further pain and compensatory muscle spasm. Instead, hydrotherapy is most beneficial when static or dynamic exercises are undertaken with the feet in contact with the ground. Wading is the easiest way for most dogs to start; it allows your dog to practice the movements for their favourite activity (a W-A-L-K!) and start strengthening the appropriate muscles straight away. This is why we LOVE the underwater treadmill (UWTM) even more than a hydrotherapy pool. Both have their pros and cons; however, at Whole Family Health, we have a UWTM due to the ability to control, adjust, add and remove certain factors that are either difficult or impossible in a pool.
Sometimes we get the dogs to swim in the UWTM, however, usually they are bearing some weight through some or all limbs.
In the UWTM we can control:
• water depth and therefore the amount of hydrostatic pressure on their limbs,
• degree of weight the animal bears through particular joints,
• speed the water flows over the body and therefore the amount of effort needed to push against the resistance,
• the amount of support they need to feel safe and so have less or no anxiety,
• we can clearly see what their limb movements are under the water using the side windows,
• water temperature, allowing soothing heat for dogs with stiff or uncomfortable joints and muscles, or ensuring it’s cooler for the athletic dogs doing cardiovascular work,
• precisely how much exercise of each type is done, as the UWTM computer measures distance, speed, time, incline and water depth. This is great to use to incrementally increase various factors and progress the animal’s treatment.
For dogs that love swimming, especially with others, a hydrotherapy pool is great fun. They are usually smaller and shallower than what a human would use. Hydrotherapy is effective for dogs that need to increase general strength or stamina, be able to move joints more freely without their body weight through them or lose weight.
However, unless it’s extremely shallow at one end, the dog is unable to have their feet on the ground at any point. This removes the benefit of weight-bearing and makes some dogs anxious because they can’t touch the bottom. Unless they’re great swimmers, float vests must be used which affects buoyancy, resistance and pressure on the body, so this has to be factored into the therapist’s calculations and treatment.
• A dog standing in water up to the hip is only bearing 38% of their body weight through their legs.
• Fat floats on water – the more fat in a dog’s body, the easier it is for them to float. The leaner and more muscular a dog is, the harder it is to float.
• When wading in a pool at a temperature of 31°C, a human in waist-deep water needs to walk at just one-third of the speed of walking on land to expend a similar amount of energy. Alternatively, the energy expenditure of a human swimming is about four times that of running the same distance. We can apply these figures somewhat to dogs, so this gives you an idea of how much work they’re doing whilst in the water
1. Does your pet like water? If your pet shivers in dread at bathtime, introducing water exercises at a time when they are injured, stressed or disabled may end in injury and disaster. If this sounds like your pet, please discuss your case with one of our physiotherapists before going ahead.
2. Hygiene. Your pet should NOT undertake hydrotherapy if:
- it has been less than 3 weeks since they had surgery
- they have an open wound anywhere on their body
- they are incontinent (either urine or number twos)
3. Does your pet need assistance in the water? Many pets can’t manage water exercises by themselves at first. Simply putting them in the bath or pool at home, or even the river or sea, can be very unsafe if they’re injured or scared. We always err on the side of safety and often use floats or life jackets.
Below, we’ve outlined a wading program so you can get the best results from hydrotherapy for your best friend. Your rehabilitation program will be even more effective if this is supplemented with individual water and land-based exercises prescribed by one of our physiotherapists.
You can try hydrotherapy for yourself, by wading your dog in water (literally walking through shallow water - a bit like us going for a paddle in the sea) that comes up to hip height, 2-4cm below the base of their tail.
• DAY 1 – wade for one minute; get out of the water and rest or walk slowly for one minute on land, watching carefully for any signs of deterioration (increased lameness, stiffness, dragging on the lead). If there are no signs of deterioration, perform a second repetition of one-minute wading, before getting back out of the water and resting for one minute on land again, watching carefully for any increased lameness, pain, etc. Only if there are no signs of deterioration, a third repetition of one-minute wading may be performed.
• DAY 2 – provided no signs of deterioration were noticed on the evening of Day 1 and the dog did not wake any worse than normal on the morning of Day 2, repeat the Day 1 program of three repetitions of one-minute wades with one-minute land-walks between to check for signs of deterioration. Continue to check for signs of deterioration throughout the rest of the day.
• DAY 3 – again, provided there are no signs of deterioration, either in the evening of Day 2 or the morning of Day 3, repeat the Day 1 program of three repetitions of one-minute wades with one-minute landwalks in between, observing closely for any signs of increased lameness, stiffness, pain, or dragging on the lead.
• Day 4 – from Day 4 onwards, increase wading by one repetition of one-minute wading per session, always landwalking for one-minute between wades to check for signs of deterioration.
When your dog can do ten minutes of wading, we recommend adding more complex exercises, if they haven’t already been introduced – just ask one of our physios for advice. Wading in water of different heights will target different muscle groups and achieve different goals, however, if you have not had a physiotherapy consultation, it is safest to wade your dog in water that comes up to hip height (2-4cm below the base of their tail). These awards exist to recognise the valuable contribution of individuals to the current and future existence of the organisation. In particular, the Awards System, described below, is intended to recognise a wide range of factors, more than simply by being a long-term Member. It also seeks to create awards so that significant contributions to DOGS NSW may be recognised appropriately.
The two Awards available to Members are:
1. Distinguished Service Award
2. Honorary Life Membership
The award of Life Membership is the highest honour that DOGS NSW can bestow on an individual. It is conferred on those who have made an exceptional contribution to the existence and advancement of the organisation. The aim is to make life membership hard to obtain so that it is respected by members and valued by recipients
Members wishing to nominate a fellow Member for either Award may apply to the Office for the appropriate Nomination Form.
Each form must be completed by two Members, in good standing and lodged with the Office prior to the advertised closing date for nominations.
All nominations are to be treated in the strictest confidence.
Nominations will be referred to the Honours Working Party for due consideration to be followed by the Working Party’s recommendations to the Board of Directors.

The Nominee is to be a continuous financial member of DOGS NSW for a minimum period of 15 years.
The Nominee must have served the dog world in an effective and meaningful way; such as Member of an Affiliate, a Committee Member, a Steward, an Event Organiser and any of the other many contributing roles which require a considerable degree of personal endeavour, involvement and dedication.
The Nominee is to be a continuous financial member of DOGS NSW for a minimum period of 25 years.
The Nominee must have demonstrated significant, sustained and high quality service enhancing the reputation and future of the overall organisation particularly to the administration, development and promotion of the canine world.
Should a member lack the membership precondition, but it can be demonstrated that the member has provided outstanding and meritorious services to DOGS NSW, then a nomination may well be warranted.
NOTE:
The members of the Honours Working Party are of the view that should a nomination not be successful, further nominations for that nominee should not be considered for a minimum period of three years.

• Photocopied or carbon entries are NOT acceptable
• Late or phone entries will NOT be accepted
• Payment by mail MUST be made by cheque or money order DO NOT send cash in the mail
• Bitches in oestrum may be shown EXCEPT in obedience, or if specified on show schedule
• If a Club needs to contract a “replacement” judge they are advised to take note of DOGS NSW Regulation Part II - Show, Section 12.6 (c), which relates to an exhibitor requesting a refund
• In accordance with DOGS NSW Regulations Part II - Show, Section 20.1, “Limitation of Exhibits for Judging”, Clubs reserve the right to alter or amend judging arrangements and to substitute judges if deemed necessary under this Regulation. The Samoyed was named after a nomadic Inuit tribe from northern Siberia in Russia called the Samoyede people. The Samoyede people were a gentle, nomadic tribe of family groups that were accompanied everywhere by their dogs. They used the Samoyed to herd reindeer, pull sleds loaded with goods and keep them warm in the frigid Siberian winters. The breed was also used to babysit the Inuit children and was brought into their chooms (or tents) at night to keep the families warm. It was this close bond over thousands of years that made the Samoyed such a peopleloving, family-orientated dog.
The Samoyed is actually a rugged, compact working dog of both dignity and grace. It is a double-coated breed with a softer undercoat and a harsher standoffish outer coat. The Samoyed coat can be white, cream or biscuit, or a combination of any the three. The breed standard describes it as a medium-sized of moderate build. Males are larger than females. Females are 45-51cm at the shoulder, the males are 51-56cm.
The Samoyed is charming, intelligent, active and playful through to old age; the breed is amazingly comical, yet thoughtfully sensitive. What sets this breed apart, aside from its magnificent beauty, is its love for all people. It is an exuberant, independent and good-natured dog and the constant companionship with man through the years has given the Samoyed an uncanny human understanding.
It is a highly intelligent breed, which is sometimes confused with disobedience or stubbornness when it comes to Obedience or other types of training.
The Samoyed is a hardy, robust breed, able to survive in harsh conditions, as only a fit and healthy dog survived to be able to breed. This means a lot of common hereditary problems found in Northern breeds are not present in the Samoyed. Hip Dysplasia is one problem that has occurred in the breed, but responsible breeders are aware of the condition and are taking steps to ensure against an increase.
Eye problems are virtually unknown among Australian Samoyeds, as are kidney problems and heart conditions. However, they may occur in individual dogs from time to time. Diabetes is another problem that may occur, but usually in older dogs.
The Samoyed’s coat is a thick double-layered hair coat. It is not a fur coat like common breed dogs and thus tends to have fewer allergic reactions. The coat requires little washing even when coated in mud, as after drying, the dirt tends to fall off easily, or with gentle brushing, leaving a white coat underneath.
A Samoyed will only smell if ill, or if the undercoat is left wet for long periods. For this reason, when washing a Samoyed it is important to dry the thick undercoat as quickly as possible. A strong hair dryer or dog blower with a good supply of talcum powder is a great investment if you own a Samoyed. You should also be prepared to brush its coat once a week for at least half an hour.
The Samoyed is a comical, intelligent breed, and is happiest at home with its chosen pack. Although highly intelligent, the breed can be difficult to train. The Samoyed learns tasks easily, but tires quickly of repetitive training and thus does better with motivation rather than with correction. The Samoyed, like the Alaskan Malamute and Siberian Husky, is a dominant breed and highly intelligent; if you give it an inch it will take a mile.
However, for those with a sense of humour to cope with this recalcitrant nature and who have the time to groom, the Samoyed is a wonderful family pet. The breed is excellent with children, always loves to play, and has a great, witty sense of humour.

When the bitch goes into labour, there are three stages:
This is when the cervix is dilating and the first visible signs appear that the bitch is going into labour. The bitch is very restless, up and down, circling and ripping up paper. She is usually panting the whole time and constantly wants to go outside and urinate, passing small amounts often. Some bitches have a very short (1-2 hours) first-stage labour, particularly the more experienced bitches. First-stage labour can, however, last as long as 12-24 hours in some cases, though this is more commonly seen with maiden bitches.
You can find an odd bitch who may appear to start, stop and then go into labour 10-12 hours later, but this is not common. This usually happens if there are too many people around and the bitch cannot get any privacy. Keep unnecessary people away while the bitch is whelping – the fewer present the better.
Most bitches go off their food during the last 12-24 hours, but this is no foolproof indicator of approaching labour. No bitch should be off her food for more than 48 hours prior to whelping. If this lack of appetite continues, take the bitch to your veterinarian for a check -up to make sure that all is well. Pregnant bitches cannot afford not to eat because of the danger of pregnancy toxaemia.
Delayed onset of parturition can also be due to the bitch being removed from her normal surroundings close to term. The less the bitch and her normal environment are disturbed in the last 5-6 days of pregnancy, the better. If the bitch is being whelped by someone else, away from her normal home, she should be installed and settled into her new environment at least a week (preferably two weeks) before she is due. Avoid unnecessary changes around the house at the same time that may require strangers moving in and around the house, e.g. renovations!
This starts with the breaking of water, which means the foetal membranes have broken as the puppy is moving down close to and/or through the pelvis. As the puppy moves down through the pelvis, a bulge will be seen below the rectum (anus) where the forward half of the puppy is pushing the vulva outwards.
Once the puppy reaches the outer edge of the vulva, it is usually expelled fairly quickly. If the bag is unbroken at this stage, gently tear the membranes to allow the fluids to drain away and the puppy to breathe. See image above of puppy still in membrane.
Most bitches will produce puppies without too much physical effort. Some bitches hardly seem to contract, yet the puppies appear to fly out as though jet-propelled. Other bitches strain, groan and moan and make the most amazing sound effects for the birth of quite small puppies. Every bitch’s pain threshold is different, like ours, but the smaller the breed, the more discomfort shown, would be a loose generalisation. Obviously, very large puppies take more time and effort.
A puppy is usually born within 20-30 minutes of the water breaking, but it can take up to one to two hours. If a puppy has not been delivered within one, or a maximum of two hours of the water breaking, ring your vet.
This particularly applies to maiden bitches with their first puppy – they decide it hurts to push and can refuse to get on with the job. Alternatively, excessive straining without producing a puppy is equally of concern – there could be a malpresentation or a very large puppy. The two-hour maximum rule generally is long enough to wait where one does not see the whelping progressing.
Puppies, unlike human babies, can present headfirst or rear end first with no appreciable difficulties. The chance of a puppy being born either way is fairly evenly divided.
Novices watching a bitch whelp for the first time are often horrified to see back legs appear, carrying over this fear from human ‘whelpings’, where breech births are uncommon and generally cause considerable problems. Breech births or rear-end presentations are for the most part no more troublesome than forward presentations. The only time difficulties may occur is when a puppy in rear presentation has been wedged inside the bitch for a long time.

When the puppy is being expelled through the pelvis, the force of the contractions and the squeezing effect of being propelled through the pelvis assist the lungs to be emptied of fluid. When a puppy is in breech presentation, the fluid is expelled but often re-inhaled to a certain extent as the head is still in the membranes inside the pelvis. Thus a puppy wedged in the pelvis in rear presentation for longer than normal is more likely to have breathing difficulties once it is expelled than one in a forward presentation.
Puppies are surrounded by fluids and membranes during pregnancy which control their environment. There is an inner and outer sack. The central part of the membranes (the placenta) is deeply embedded in the wall of the uterus in the form of a wide band. The puppy is attached to the placenta via the umbilical cord, through which it receives nutriment.
When the puppy is being expelled through the pelvis during birth, the pressure exerted breaks the membranes, leading to the term ‘ breaking water’. Occasionally, a ‘bag’ may hang down from the vulva; this is usually just the outer bag that may not have broken and contains placental fluid. Leave this alone unless there is a puppy head or tail close by, as the fluid acts as a lubricant during contractions. If there is a puppy half the way out of the pelvis, gently tear the bag open to allow the puppy to breathe – particularly if the head is presenting.
Once the puppy has been born, the placenta (or ‘afterbirth’ as it follows the birth) may still be attached and inside the bitch. Quite often, the umbilical cord breaks several centimetres from the puppy’s stomach, which may need to be tied off or held for a minute or two.
The afterbirths may follow each puppy, but there can be several puppies born and then the afterbirths may follow in a little group. Do not panic if there is not an afterbirth with each puppy, just keep a rough count of the number of puppies relative to the number of afterbirths passed. When the bitch has finally finished whelping, the numbers should generally tally. Bitches often eat the afterbirths and can be very fast at doing so, so keeping an exact track of numbers can occasionally be rather difficult.
If a puppy is stuck halfway out of the bitch, i.e., head or rear end presenting and not coming out any further after five minutes (10 minutes maximum), gently pull the puppy out and down, i.e., at about an angle of 45°.
If head first, put your first two fingers – one on either side of the neck - just behind the head. Pull gently and curl your fingers back into your hand as you pull out and down.
If the rear end is presented first, pull above the hocks – never grab or pull a puppy around the middle as you can rupture the puppy’s liver. With a rear presentation, where the head and shoulders are caught very firmly inside the bitch, gently put your little finger up the side and hook out one elbow. Repeat for the other side and then pull the puppy out and down. Once the shoulders are through, the puppy pops out very easily.
Pull with the bitch, i.e. as she pushes, you pull – sometimes in a slight side-to-side motion if the shoulders or pelvis are stuck and downward pulling is not working.
If the bitch is very tired, she may not assist very much. If the bitch is not getting the puppy into the pelvic canal, you can occasionally ‘feather’ the bitch by placing two fingers inside the pelvis and gently pushing them apart and holding that position for 5-10 seconds, resting for 20-30 seconds and repeating – this will cause the bitch to contract and can be enough to bring the last one or two puppies down and through the pelvis.
The puppies tend to come in twos, one from each horn of the uterus, so you will often have two puppies being born fairly close together (10-30 minutes), then a break of 1-2 hours and then another two as the puppies gradually move down each horn of the uterus. If there is a large litter, the break between puppies tends to get longer towards the end as the bitch gets tired. The average time between puppies can vary immensely depending on the fitness and age of the bitch, but the average would be one hour. Usually, the first half of the litter is whelped quite quickly, followed by a break midway through while the front half shifts backwards. When there is a break of more than 2 hours, take the bitch outside to allow her to go to the toilet – pushing against a full bladder can be very difficult! You may need to put the bitch on a lead and drag her outside: they often will not go willingly. After the bitch has been outside, give her some calcium tablets and if she does not kick back into labour after 2-3 hours, you need to contact your vet.
If there is a large litter, the first ‘half’ will be born fairly quickly, then the bitch may have a break of 1-3 hours while the other half appear to shift down towards the pelvis. Once the ‘break’ is over, the bitch often gets back down to work and pops the second half out in reasonable time.
Leave the puppies on the bitch as much as possible while she is whelping. This may sound very obvious, but I have seen many breeders keep most of the puppies away from the bitch as she is whelping – DON’T – it not only distresses the bitch but considerably slows the whelping process.
The puppies suckling on the bitch stimulates the natural release of oxytocin, which in turn helps the bitch’s uterus to contract, assisting the remaining puppies to be expelled. For this reason, do not separate the puppies from the bitch. They should remain attached to the bitch for maximum oxytocin release and only remove when the bitch has to go outside or put to one side when she stands up and turns around while expelling a puppy.
A fit bitch will usually whelp much faster than an overweight bitch. In the giant breeds, for example the St Bernard, the lack of muscle tone can create problems as the first half of the litter is usually delivered reasonably well but then muscle fatigue sets in, reducing the chance of the puppies surviving up in the top (forward) end of the uterine horns.
The afterbirths are passed either with or between puppies and the bitch is often very fast in cleaning the puppies and eating the afterbirths. This is quite a natural procedure and it is a good source of protein for the bitch, but it can cause her to vomit or to have loose motions after she has finished whelping. Generally, I allow the bitch to eat one or two afterbirths and then remove the rest as they arrive, so that there is little cleaning up later on, but the bitch may beat you to it!
If the puppy has been expelled by the bitch but is still attached by its umbilical cord, put your fingers on either side of the cord and go up as far as you can into the bitch, clamp your fingers and gently pull against the bitch. Never pull against the puppy. Usually, the afterbirth will come out if you pull steadily. The cord may break as you pull, but the cord will usually stop bleeding if you hold it for 1-2 minutes.
When the cord breaks very close to the puppy, or the cord will not stop bleeding, clamp your fingers over the end and get some cotton or linen thread and tie around the base of the cord near the abdomen. Tie it firmly but don’t pull too hard or the cotton can cut through the cord. Cut the knot off very close to the cord so the bitch cannot tug it off. The cotton will fall off with the cord when it dries in 2-3 days. (Have some pieces of thread to use for tying off ready before the bitch whelps – running around holding a bleeding puppy while you find things is not good.)
If the cords are very long and/or the bitch does not eat the afterbirth or break the cord, cut off the afterbirth 8-10cm away from the abdomen after 3-5 minutes with a blunt pair of scissors or tear it with your fingers. After a couple of hours, when the cords are dry, cut them off about 3-5 cm from the abdomen, otherwise, the cords can get tangled around the puppies’ legs and toes and cut off the circulation.
Occasionally there can be a tear at the base of the umbilical cord, causing bleeding and an open abdominal cavity from which the intestines can protrude. Place a tissue over the hole and lightly tape it around the abdomen. Ring your vet immediately – this will have to be sutured immediately to prevent infections and/or further loops of the gut from protruding. Not all of these puppies are able to be saved and generally only those that receive fairly immediate veterinary treatment survive.
When the bitch has finished whelping, she will settle down, accept food and the panting will slow down. Some bitches do, however, have a rest mid-whelping, so be on your guard. A bitch that has finished whelping will have a reddishbrown discharge. If there is a green discharge, there are usually more puppies and/or afterbirths. A bitch that has finished whelping looks very “hollow” in the flanks and there are no large objects when one feels across the abdomen. You can quite often feel a thickness which is the involuting (shrinking) uterus. This can occasionally feel like another puppy is still present, but with no discernible head or rear end. This will further shrink after another hour, so if the bitch is relaxed and not straining leave her alone and recheck – if the uterus still feels enlarged and there is a greenish discharge, the bitch may still have either further afterbirths or another puppy.
To be certain that the bitch has finished whelping and has passed all the afterbirths, take the bitch down to the vet several hours after she has appeared to have finished. If she whelped during the night (as 70-80% of bitches invariably do), wait until a respectable hour of the morning (out of kindness to your vet), then take the bitch and the puppies for a check-up and an injection of Oxytocin to clean the bitch out.
If you think there is a problem and the bitch still has puppies left in her and it has been more than 2 hours (3 hours maximum) from the last puppy, ring your vet, even, as much as I hate to say it, if it is in the middle of the night. Do try to consider the health and well-being of your vet before doing this. I like my clients with possible problem whelpers to notify me the day or night before they expect the bitch to whelp, so if there is trouble, everyone is (reasonably) organised around the situation.
With a bitch (and/or breeder) that is experienced and where the bitch has whelped cleanly, without any problems, has passed all the afterbirths, has a normal reddish discharge and settled down well; it may not be necessary to take the bitch to the vet. Ring your vet at a reasonable time, explain how the bitch has whelped and how many puppies she has had and let your vet decide if there is a need to check the bitch.

Taking dogs on a walk every day is necessary, but it can get old if you are walking the same path every day. This is true for both the dog and the owner.
Additionally, what may seem like only a few years to us has been half a lifetime for our dogs! They have been seeing this same trail for a really long time. Dogs have a much different lifespan than people, so their years translate differently. This is commonly called ‘dog years’ and it seems so fast from our point of view. From the dog’s perspective, it is more than time to change things up.
Here are a few ways you can change the routine of your walk to make it more enjoyable for you and your dog.
Sometimes, just letting your dog run free is the perfect change in routine. An enclosed space, like a dog park, is perfect for letting your companion tire themselves out while also getting to explore and see new things.
This may not seem like a big deal, but letting your dog explore new spaces actually does a lot of good for their mental state. Exploring exercises the mind of the dog, which is a key factor in making them truly tired and content. A dog that isn’t getting this may start getting destructive or irritated and the routine walk may stop alleviating these symptoms.
It can also be a chance to practise recall training by having your dog come to you randomly while they are exploring. This will provide both physical and mental exercise. It also gives you a chance to sit down and take a small break while your dog runs like crazy!
If you can’t change the setting of the walk, then you have to change the way that the walk is proctored. As the person holding the leash, you have the power to do this.
Before you leave, get some training treats or cut-up cheese or hotdogs, and put them in a little bag to go on your walk with you. Throughout your walk, have your dog do some tricks. These can be old tricks, new tricks, or anything in between. Something simple like having them sit will change up the routine just as easily as having them roll over on the sidewalk.
Your dog will be very focused on you and the treats that you have along your walk. They may not even be paying attention to the setting anymore. Most dogs are people-pleasers. They want to be praised and they want that treat. This will make the walk even more fun for them.
They also get in a great training session and dust off those cobwebs that might be growing on those old dogs!
Walking can be very monotonous, especially for something that can’t hold a conversation. Changing the pace of the walk could help your dog to become more invested in the walk and, therefore, more excited.
This can be for the entire walk, such as taking your dog on a run instead of a walk. Obviously, some dogs are not cut out for this. But even just a power-walk can have the same effect. It can be intermittent. Start off walking the trail, then randomly speed up and slow down. The walk will be much more enjoyable for your dog if they are allowed to sniff around. If they have been kept strictly to your side, then that is excellent! They have been trained very well. Letting them then sniff around will allow them to see the path in an entirely new way.
