Greetings to all!

It is lovely to finally see us all out and about again. Shows and Trials are all going well and everyone is very aware of the social distancing requirements. It may be harder to continue to do this, as the numbers continue to drop, but we need to stay aware that COVID is in the background until we get to a reliable vaccine stage, which is not in the near future at this time.

However, meanwhile, the hot weather is upon us. This means the threat of bush fire season, snakes, ticks and heat stress are all here.

Ticks are generally very well under control as long as you ensure that your dog/s get their regular anti-tick medications in tick prone areas.

Snakes are more of an issue in long grass, around sources of water and rocky outcrops. Snakes are active on hot days in the early mornings and late afternoons, and, in the worst of the heat they will go looking for cool spots that may also be the inside your house! So take care to leave outside doors securely closed, or you may have some unwanted visitors. If your dog/s suddenly start barking, differently to outsiders approaching, check your dogs, as they may be alerting you that danger is around!

Dogs that are affected by snake bite can have a variety of symptoms, however, the most common are dilated pupils, salivation, muscle trembling and collapse. The rapidity of onset of symptoms can vary depending on where the dog was bitten, how close to a blood vessel, and how much venom was received.

Brown snake bites will take effect quite quickly, black red belly toxin more slowly. If you think a snake has bitten your dog, get your dog to the vet ASAP, do not waste time, particularly if you found your dog already collapsed.

Heat stress becomes a major issue in the hotter weather, particularly for brachycephalic breeds. Do not let your dog/s run loose on really hot days. Keep them quiet and cool, ensure there is good air movement around where the dogs are kept. Have more than adequate amounts of water available, kids wading pools for the larger breeds, etc. Give electrolytes in the food the night before really hot days. Have cool coats on your dogs, if out in the heat, but they must stay wet to be effective.

Bush fire preparedness is another area you should consider, along with heat stress and snake bite issues. We are forecast to have more rain early on in the summer followed by very dry conditions. As the weather is warming up, Petstock veterinarian, Dr Alison Kemp gives us some Spring Petcare Tips, which are particularly useful for those with new puppies. Breeders may like to remind their new puppy owners of some of these tips, which cover plant and flower safety, spring allergies, fleas and ticks, snake bites, bee stings, microchip, collar and ID tags, pet sunscreen plus the hazards of spring cleaning. The article commences on page 14.

Global research company Coya, recently revealed the most dog friendly cities around the world, in terms of infrastructure; not only such things as parks and dog-friendly establishments, but also the costs involved with looking after an animal, abandonment rates, and the responsibility of dog owners, including the cost of fines for dog fouling. San Francisco came out as the best city for dogs in the study overall, followed by Seattle and then Tel Aviv. The findings are very interesting and the article commences on page 10.

From international research to jetsetting dogs, one of our news articles, commencing page 8, explains how many of our Australian residents have been waiting months for the restrictions to lift, so their dogs may be able to return home. When COVID-19 hit, thousands of families returned to Australia upon Government advice, however, their furry family members have been unable to return because they cannot land directly into Melbourne, where Australia’s only quarantine facility is located. They have remained stranded overseas, despite their owners paying thousands of dollars for the necessary and required vet checks, Australian Government permits and transport vendors months ago. After an appeal was launched in mid-September, stranded pets are now able to be reunited under a new temporary arrangement with Qantas airlines and the Australian Government.

It is no secret that different types of working dogs are very suited for particular jobs, whether it be a therapy, guide, police, rescue or detector work. However, a study taking place at the Canine Cognition Centre at the University of Arizona, is exploring ways to identify the best dogs for different jobs, before they start the long and expensive training process by looking at their cognitive abilities. Researcher Evan Maclean’s findings suggest that cognition could be considered, alongside temperament and physicality, to predict working dog success, and, if organisations that train dogs could better predict which dogs are most worth the investment, it could save tens of thousands of dollars in unnecessary training costs. It could also ensure that people in need get the right dogs faster. For further information about the study, please turn to page 24.

The spotlight breed this month is the Tibetan Mastiff, a formidable breed, both in size and intelligence. Independent, powerful and strong willed, early socialisation and obedience training is essential. The breed has highly evolved guardian instincts, so it is not recommended for novice dog owners. They are calm, aloof, protective and are very loyal companions. The breed spotlight commences on page 18.

DOGS NSW website has a new facility available under the heading Breeds, a quiz entitled, ‘Find the right dog breed for you.” There are 14 questions in total to answer, and when completed, 5 breed suggestions come up for the user, along with images for each breed.

There is one main breed suggestion, which includes a short description about the dog’s character and /or temperament and when you click on this, or any of the other breed suggestions, it immediately opens to a full description, along with breeders to the right hand side.

We are the only State Council with this facility, which has taken considerable time and effort to develop and complete, thanks to Vice President Lynnette Brown.

Stranded cats and dogs to be reunited with owners under new arrangement

When COVID-19 hit, thousands of families returned to Australia upon Government advice. However, their furry family members have been unable to return because they cannot land directly into Melbourne, where Australia’s only quarantine facility is located. They remain stranded overseas, despite their owners paying thousands of dollars for the necessary and required vet checks, Australian Government permits and transport vendors months ago.

Cats and dogs entering Australia must undergo a quarantine period. In 2015, the Federal Government shut quarantine facilities outside of Victoria, so now the country's only quarantine facility is in Mickleham, Melbourne, where no international passenger flights are landing.

The families appealed to the Federal Government for pragmatism and compassion to allow the pets to arrive through other Australian ports that do have international flights, while adhering to important biosecurity restrictions, to help pets at risk of being euthanised or given away.

Finally an appeal was sent to the Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management David Littleproud, pleading for assistance along with a petition from missionimpawsible.com.au, highlighting the issue and pleading for assistance on this matter.

Some prayers were answered, as a media statement was issued on 18 September from the Minister, David Littleproud with the following action being taken in cooperation with Qantas airlines. See the media release below and following page.

Cats and dogs may now be transhipped via Sydney to the Post Entry Quarantine Facility in Melbourne under a new temporary arrangement with Qantas airlines, when there is no option for them to fly directly to Melbourne.

Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management, David Littleproud said the temporary arrangement is great news for Australians with pets stranded overseas due to the pandemic. “Pets are part of the family in almost every household in Australia,” Minister Littleproud said.

“The Australian Government understands how hard it has been for some pet owners to make the difficult decision to leave their pets behind due to the COVID-19 inflicted travel restrictions. That is why we have worked with Qantas to offer an alternative arrangement for cats and dogs to be reunited with their families during these difficult times.”

“Qantas has demonstrated they can effectively comply with all of Australia’s biosecurity requirements and I thank them for their work to make this a reality.” Minister Littleproud said. “Biosecurity will never be traded off and import conditions must be met in full before any pet can come to Australia.”

“Despite current state government COVID restrictions our quarantine facility continues to operate and meet demand from pet owners for bookings.”

“We also shouldn’t forget that throughout the pandemic my department has worked closely with owners, pet transport agents and airlines on arrangements that have safely delivered over 1200 pets to our Quarantine facility in Melbourne since May.”

“This arrangement will allow those pets waiting overseas, where there are no direct flights to Melbourne, to get home to Australia. I look forward to seeing Australians being reunited with their beloved pets and hope that this brings some happiness during a difficult period.”

Chief Customer Officer, Qantas Freight International, Nick McGlynn said pet movements into Australia remain restricted due to the limited number of flights, but the option to use Sydney as a transfer port will go a long way towards helping reunite them with their owners.

“Setting up Sydney as an alternative pet transfer hub has been made possible due to the close collaboration between a number of government departments and Qantas.” Mr McGlynn said.

• Nearly 2800 dogs and cats have arrived in Australia during 2020, including more than 1200 since May 2020, when air transport for pets recommenced following an airline-imposed embargo in March 2020.

Berlin, Germany August 2020 Pet insurance specialists Coya have released a study revealing the best cities for dogs. As a team of dog enthusiasts, Coya has taken note of record numbers of dog adoptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, but also the concerns from rescue centres that an economic downturn and increased joblessness will lead to many of these animals being sent back to rescue centres.

To help inform fellow pet lovers, the insurance specialists set out to determine the best cities around the world for dogs. The data reveals not only the best cities for dog owners in terms of infrastructure, such as parks and dogfriendly establishments, but also looks at the costs involved with looking after an animal, abandonment rates and the responsibility of dog owners, including the cost of fines for dog fouling.

Top Findings

● San Francisco, USA is the best city for dogs in the study overall, followed by Seattle, USA, and Tel Aviv, Israel.

● Seattle has the most dogs, with 246.67 pooches per 1,000 inhabitants.

● Basel, Switzerland has the lowest abandonment rate, followed by Zurich, Switzerland, Oslo and Norway. New York, USA has the highest, followed by Miami and Los Angeles.

● Madrid, Spain has the highest dog waste fines, followed by Singapore and Barcelona, Spain. Cologne, Munster and Leipzig are tied for the lowest.

● Sydney, Australia ranks #34 out of 50.

A global research study conducted by insurance company Coya reveals the most dog-friendly cities around the world, including data on dogs per capita, abandonment rates, fines for dog fouling and more.

How the study was conducted

The study began by creating a shortlist of cities around the globe, previously cited as a good location for dogs, finalising a list of 50 locations with comparable and available data. Coya then considered what makes a city perfect for a pet: plentiful parks, pet stores, vets and dog-friendly establishments, such as hotels and restaurants, all contribute towards good dog infrastructure in a city. As any pet owner knows that animals can be expensive, so the lifetime cost of keeping a dog was also taken into account.

To paint a picture of how many pups live in each city, an estimate of dogs per capita was calculated for every location. And to determine how responsible dog owners are in each city, the study investigated the number of dogs which are abandoned each year and the official fines for not cleaning up dog mess. To complement these findings, residents in each city were asked to rate responsible dog ownership in their area, with regards to how good owners are in cleaning up their pet’s poop. The final results reveal which cities are home to the happiest hounds.

● New York, USA has the highest number of dog parks score (100), followed by Melbourne, Australia (96.33) and Madrid, Spain (94.30).

● Zurich, Switzerland has the highest lifetime ownership costs, with pet ownership costing an estimated 34,456.63 US dollars, followed by Basel, Switzerland ($33,210.17) and Geneva, Switzerland ($32,420.42).

● Warsaw, Poland has the lowest lifetime ownership costs, with pet ownership costing an estimated 10,428.40 US dollars, followed by Prague, Czechia ($11,858.72) and Lisbon, Portugal ($12,439.24).

Abandoned Dogs/Year (Score)

● Basel, Switzerland has the highest abandoned dogs/per year score (100), meaning the lowest number of abandoned dogs, followed by Zurich, Switzerland (99.93) and Oslo, Norway (99.86).

● New York, USA has the lowest abandoned dogs/per year score (50), meaning the highest number of abandoned dogs, followed by Miami, USA (57.58) and Los Angeles, USA (69.44).

● Madrid, Spain has the highest dog waste fine score (100), meaning the highest fines for dog waste, followed by Singapore (98.14) and Barcelona, Spain (95.56).

● Cologne, Munster and Leipzig, Germany are tied for the lowest score (50), meaning they have the lowest fines for dog waste.

● Miami, USA has the highest dog waste survey score (100), meaning residents rated it highly for lack of unattended dog waste, followed by San Francisco, USA (97.52) and Seattle, USA (97.17).

● Paris, France has the lowest score (50), followed by Brussels, Belgium (59.41) and Auckland, New Zealand (63.67).

Spring Pet Care Tips

With Spring in full bloom, all of our pets are out and about, enjoying the warmer weather, however, there are a few things, as owners we should be aware of in order to look after our pets during this time. PETstock Vet, Dr Alison Kemp gives us some Spring pet care advice to keep our pets happy and safe.

1. Plant and flower safety

Many Aussie pet parents have also adopted the ‘plant parent’ phrase and are likely to purchase or grow more plants during spring, but several of the most popular household plant and flower species can be toxic and even fatal to pets.

There are many non-toxic options safe for both dogs and cats, these include Blue Echeveria (pictured top right), Burro’s Tail (pictured bottom right), Bamboo and Ponytail Palm.

Symptoms of plant or flower poisoning include vomiting, diarrhoea, depression or other abnormal behaviour, including seizures, excessive drooling, or weakness. If you suspect that your pet has ingested a poisonous plant or flower, please contact your vet immediately.

2. Spring allergies

Just like humans, pets can also experience seasonal allergies. Allergies occur when a pet’s immune system identifies something in the environment as threatening or dangerous.

Common springtime allergens for pets include grass, weed and tree pollens, dust and mould. Most symptoms include sensitive skin (red or irritated skin), bald or thinning patches of the fur, itchy and smelly ears, and excessive licking of an areas on their body.

If your pet does suffer from seasonal allergies, ensure you don’t over-groom them and irritate their skin further and always use a gentle pet formulated shampoo. For further advice on treating your pets’ allergies, please speak to your local vet

3. Fleas & ticks

Fleas and ticks are common in Australia and can make your pet dangerously ill. Ensure all cats and dogs in your household have been treated with the correct flea and tick protection before allowing them out in the yard. Consistency is key, so be sure you treat your pet now and continue monthly applications throughout the rest of the year.

4. Snake bites

Now that winter is behind us, our scaly friends will be starting to make an appearance. Pet owners should always be on the lookout for snakes, which like to sunbathe on warm days, particularly on warm rocks.

Inquisitive dogs not keeping a safe distance may get bitten, so keep an eye on your buddy and monitor them for signs of a snake bite including lethargy, wobbliness, drooling and vomiting. If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake it’s essential to seek emergency hospital care immediately.

5. Bee stings

With budding flowers in full swing, bee stings are a common threat pets face, particularly for curious pets that love spending time in the backyard. Just like humans, pets’ physical reactions will differ in severity when stung by a bee.

If your pet has been stung and you’re unsure whether they are allergic or not, contact your local vet and describe your pet’s symptoms so they can make an accurate assessment. For pets with allergies to bees, it’s essential they are closely monitored outdoors in the event they succumb to a bee or wasp sting which can be fatal, particularly in small breed animals. If you suspect your pet has been bitten seek vet advice immediately.

6. Microchip, collar, and ID tags

With the weather warming up, pets and owners are likely to take longer walks and visit parks more frequently. Ensuring your pet is microchipped, with up to date details and wearing their collar and ID tag will help keep them safe if they wander off.

7. Pet sunscreen

Pets with light skin and short or thin hair are particularly prone to sunburn, which can lead to skin cancer or other sun induced skin diseases. Although the sun may feel tame in spring, it’s important that pet owners carry pet sunscreen with them on their daily walks and apply it in the months leading up to summer to decrease their chances of obtaining a fatal skin disease.

8. Spring cleaning

It’s the one time of year that calls for a deep house clean! When cleaning, ensure you are keeping all chemicals and cleaning products out of your pet’s reach, especially if you are using soap water in a bucket that is easily accessible to pets. If it’s a nice day, opening the windows while you’re cleaning will help prevent your pet from inhaling any harmful chemicals.

Section 10, Clause 10.4, which currently reads:-

Clause 28, which currently reads:-

The Member must keep records and make those records available to any person authorised, in writing, to DOGS NSW Secretary pursuant to resolution of the Board of Directors as follows: (ii) Evidence of current vaccinations, worming, heartworm, flea and tick treatment/preventative, for all dogs owned or controlled by the Member. This could include Veterinary records that should be made available if required. (07/20)

All affiliates are requested to check their schedules in case they are looking to invite Mr. Fagerström to judge at any of their future events.

New FCI Recognised Breeds

Please note an application has been received for re-registration of the following FCI recognised breeds: Bolognese and Beauceron (Berger de Beauce).

In addition the ANKC Group listing will be updated with these breeds being allocated to Group 1 (Toys) and Group 5 (Working Dog) respectively, as confirmed by the National Breed Standards Coordination Group.

ANKC LTD Herding Rules Review

The ANKC have requested submissions from NSW for any rule changes to be collated and sent back to ANKC by April 2021. Members who wish to submit any changes please do so by the 31st January 2021. Members submissions will then be voted on by NSW members on Friday 26 February 2021 through a Skype meeting at 7.30 pm. CORRECT OWNERSHIP NAMES ON ENTRIES

Members are required to ensure that when entering dogs, whether online or hard copy, that the correct name/s of the ownership of the dog is shown on the entry form. The correct name/s is that of the registered ownership of the particular dog and should be entered exactly as shown on that membership. It should be noted that failure to enter a dog correctly is a breach of Regulations Part II-Show, Section 1.7 (ii), and any such breach would result in the dog being disqualified.

MEMBERS AND AFFILIATES

Members and Affiliates are requested to ensure that when they EFT/direct debiting payments into the DOGS NSW Account that they include a reference, e.g. “invoice number”, “member renewal (mem no)”, “Club name levies”, “transfer (dog no.)” etc.

There have been times when there has been no reference to where or whom the money has come from and this makes it difficult for the Account Department to reconcile those accounts. Your assistance in using a reference for these payments would be greatly appreciated.

Tibetan Mastiff

History

The Tibetan Mastiff is a large Tibetan dog breed, originating with the nomadic cultures of Tibet, China, India, Mongolia and Nepal, and still used by local tribes of Tibetans to protect sheep from wolves, leopards, bears, large mustelids and tigers.1.

In 2008, a mitogenome study concluded that while 12 dog breeds studied appeared to have diverged from the gray wolf 42,000 years ago, the Tibetan Mastiff lineage diverged earlier at 58,000 years ago.2 In 2011, a further study by the same authors concluded that there was a genetic relationship between the Tibetan Mastiff and the Great Pyrenees, Bernese Mountain dog, Rottweiler and Saint Bernard, and that these large breed dogs are probably partially descended from the Tibetan Mastiff.3 In 2014, a study added the Leonberger to the list of possible relatives. In 2016, a study looked at how the Tibetan Mastiff was able to adapt to the extreme highland conditions of the Tibetan Plateau very quickly compared to other mammals such as the yak, Tibetan antelope, snow leopard, and the wild boar. The study indicated that the Tibetan Mastiff’s ability to avoid hypoxia in high altitudes, due to its lower haemoglobin levels compared to low-altitude dogs, was due to prehistoric interbreeding with Tibetan wolves.4.

In 1872, one writer has stated: The dogs of Tibet are twice the size of those seen in India, with large heads and hairy bodies. They are powerful animals and are said to be able to kill a tiger. During the day they are kept chained up and are let loose at night to guard their master’s house.5.

In the early 20th century, King George V introduced a pair of Tibetan Mastiffs and enough of the breed were available in England in 1906 to be shown at the Crystal Palace Show. However, during the war years, the breed lost favour and focus and nearly died out in England.1.

After 1980, the breed began to gain popularity worldwide. Although the breed is still considered somewhat uncommon, as more active breeders arose and produced adequate numbers of dogs, various registries and show organisations (FCI, AKC) began to recognise the breed. In 2008, the Tibetan Mastiff competed for the first time in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.1.

Tibetan Mastiffs in Australia

The first Tibetan Mastiff pair were imported into Australia in early 1983 by Dick and Pauline Leeton of South Australia. A light gold male (Ausables Tudorhill Dalai Dallas) and a black and tan bitch (Ausables Tudorhill Lama Panda). These dogs spent 12 months in quarantine in England prior to coming to Australia and were shown extensively during that time. They were the first Tibetan Mastiffs to appear at Crufts in 50 years and both won first in their respective classes. Shortly after this a second bitch, black in colour (Qassaba Ausables Matilda Tilly), was imported from the UK. These three formed the strong basis of the Tibetan Mastiff breed in Australia.

Appearance

Large, powerfully built, slightly longer than high. Well boned and muscled, never light but always agile. Impressive head provides a noble, dignified look, enhanced by a mane, which is more pronounced in males, balanced by a well feathered tail carried over the back.6.

Appearance

Males carry noticeably more coat than females. Quality of greater importance than quantity. Densely coated, fairly long, thick, with heavy, woolly undercoat in cold weather, which becomes rather sparse in warmer months. Hair fine, hard and straight, never silky, curly, or wavy. Hair on face short. Neck and shoulders heavily coated, giving mane-like appearance. Tail (medium to long) heavily feathered, set on high, loosely curled over back to one side. Hind legs well feathered on upper rear parts.6.

The coat of a Tibetan Mastiff lacks the unpleasant big-dog smell that affects many large breeds. The coat, whatever its length or color(s), should shed dirt and odours. Although the dogs shed somewhat throughout the year, there is generally one great moult in late winter or early spring and sometimes another, lesser moult in the late summer. (Sterilisation of the dog may dramatically affect the coat as to texture, density and shedding pattern.) 1.

Tibetan Mastiffs are shown under one standard in the West, but separated by the Indian breed standard into two varieties: Lion Head (smaller; exceptionally long hair from forehead to withers, creating a ruff or mane) and Tiger Head (larger; shorter hair).1.

Temperament & Suitability

A loyal companion and guardian. Slow to mature. Independently minded, aloof and protective. Calm and patient. May be wary of strangers. 6.

As a flock guardian dog in Tibet and in the West, it uses all the usual livestock guardian tactics (e.g., barking, scent-marking perimeters) to warn away predators and avoid direct confrontations.7.

As a socialised, more domestic dog, it can thrive in a spacious, fenced yard with a canine companion, but it is generally not an appropriate dog for apartment living. The Western-bred dogs are generally more easy-going, although somewhat aloof with strangers coming to the home. Through hundreds of years of selective breeding for a protective flock and family guardian, the breed has been prized for being a nocturnal sentry, keeping would-be predators and intruders at bay, barking at sounds throughout the night. Leaving a Tibetan Mastiff outside all night with neighbours nearby is not recommended. They often sleep during the day, making them more active, alert and aware at night.7.

Like all flock guardian breeds, they are intelligent and stubborn to a fault, so obedience training is recommended (although it is only mildly successful with some individuals), since this is a strong-willed, powerful breed. Unless they are to be used exclusively as livestock guardians, socialisation obedience training is also critical with this breed, because of their reserved nature with strangers and guardian instincts. They can be excellent family dogs depending on the family. Owners must understand canine psychology and be willing and able to assume the primary leadership position. Lack of consistent, rational discipline can result in the creation of dangerous, unpredictable dogs. The protectiveness of Tibetan Mastiffs requires alertness and planning by the owner in order to avoid mishaps when the dog is simply performing as a guardian. The breed is not recommended for novice dog owners.7.

What makes a good working dog? Canine ‘aptitude test’ might offer clues

A canine cognition test could help organisations that train working dogs identify the dogs that are most likely to succeed, according to new research.

If organisations could better predict which dogs will succeed in working roles, it could save thousands of dollars in training costs and ensure people in need get their dogs faster.

The canine labour market is diverse and expansive. Assistance dogs may be trained to work with the visually or hearing impaired or with people in wheelchairs. Detection dogs may be trained to sniff out explosives, narcotics or bedbugs. Other pups even learn to jump out of helicopters on daring rescue missions.

Despite the wide variety of working roles available for man’s best friend, those jobs can be tough to fill, since not every dog will qualify. Even among dogs specifically bred to be assistance dogs, for example, only about 50 percent that start a training program will successfully complete it, while the rest go on to be very well-trained family pets.

As a result, the wait list for a trained assistance dog can be up to two years.

Evan MacLean, director of the Canine Cognition Centre at the University of Arizona, is exploring ways to identify the best dogs for different jobs, before they start the long and expensive training process, by looking at their cognitive abilities.

He is lead author of a new study in Frontiers in Veterinary Science that looks at whether canines’ cognitive abilities can help predict their success as working dogs.

While a dog’s physical characteristics and temperament are often considered when thinking about which dog will be right for a given job, cognition is an area that’s received far less attention.

“People have really focused on temperament and how reactive a dog is to certain things in the environment,” said MacLean, assistant professor in the UA School of Anthropology. “What we were interested in was the fact that these dogs also face cognitive challenges. They have to learn all these things in the course of their training, and they have to be able to flexibly solve problems when things go wrong.”

MacLean’s study focuses on two types of working dogs: assistance dogs in training, which will go on to be paired with people with disabilities and explosive detection dogs working for the U.S. Navy.

MacLean and his colleagues looked at the performance of both types of dogs on 25 different cognitive measures by using a battery of game-based tests, like hiding and finding objects and other forms of canine play.

What they found: A different set of skills predict whether a dog will be a good detection dog or a good assistance dog. In the case of assistance dogs, social skills, including the ability to pay close attention to and maintain eye contact with humans, appear to be especially important. In detection dogs, good short-term memory and sensitivity to human body language, such as pointing gestures, were the best predictors of success.

“Dog jobs are just about as diverse as human jobs are,” MacLean said. “People sometimes think of working dogs as this general category of dogs that have jobs in society, but they actually have to do really, really different things and because these jobs are so diverse, we didn’t expect that there was going to be one litmus test for what would make a good dog. It’s like if you think about aptitude testing with people; there are certain questions that will tell you something about one job but not another.”

The study involved 164 dogs from the Californiabased organisation Canine Companions for Independence, which trains assistance dogs and 222 dogs from the Navy.

The researchers tested the assistance dogs at 18 months old, when they first started a full-time, intensive six-month training program. Dogs in the study were considered “successful” based on whether or not they ultimately graduated from the training. Through cognitive testing, MacLean and his colleagues were able to predict the top 25 percent of graduates with 86 percent accuracy.

The success of the Navy dogs, whose training is ongoing and not marked by a single graduation date, was measured based on trainers’ records of the dogs’ performance on training exercises, as well as questionnaires with people who trained or deployed with the dogs.

MacLean’s findings suggest that cognition could be considered alongside temperament and physicality to predict working dog success.

If organisations that train dogs could better predict which dogs are most worth the investment, it could save tens of thousands of dollars in unnecessary training costs and also ensure that people in need get the right dogs faster, MacLean said.

He and his colleagues are now working on determining if cognitive testing could be informative even earlier, when a dog is just 8 weeks old. They also are looking at whether these skills have a genetic basis that could be targeted in breeding programs.

“One of the most exciting parts of all this is that it tells us cognition does something in animals,” MacLean said. “We study these abstract questions about how animals think about the world and how they solve problems, but there aren’t always a lot of situations where you can say, ‘Why does that matter? What does it allow an animal to actually do?’ This is some of the first evidence that suggests that these processes that we measure, which differ between individual dogs, have some real consequences related to something that’s quite worthy in society.”
