Following on from last month’s positive news regarding the Respiratory Function Grading scheme, it is encouraging to know that some of our breeders of Brachycephalic breeds have travelled to Melbourne to Dr Andrew House, specifically to have their dogs evaluated.
It is evident that if we, as breeders/owners, commit to upgrading our our health and welfare issues, it is lifting the profile associated with the name of DOGS NSW as a member body of Dogs Australia.
One issue we cannot control, is the weather conditions affecting all who use our grounds at Orchard Hills, be it weekly training or conformation shows. Most unfortunately, the recent NSW State Obedience Titles have had to be cancelled. Our insurance policy is quite clear, when the grounds are unsafe, we must act accordingly. I hope all members can be patient and understanding that the closure of the grounds isn’t taken lightly, nor easily.
From The Hon. Dugald Saunders (MP) stating that:
“The NSW Government is committed to ensuring that NSW Animal Welfare laws are fit for purpose for everyone involved in working with animals. The Animal Justice Party’s Companion Animals Amendment (Puppy Farms) Bill 2021 does not meet this standard, and, as such, I can advise that we will not be supporting this Bill.”
This is a great result for our organisation and, as members may well be aware, has taken considerable time, effort and some diplomacy.
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Amendment (Animal Sentience) Bill 2022
On Wednesday 10 August, Greens MLC Abigail Boyd read her private members Bill: Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Amendment (Animal Sentience) Bill 2022. Here are some of the issues contained within this Bill: • some parts of the Bill amendments are impossible to define.
• as animals do not express their pleasure or suffering as humans do, it appears the Bill presumes that our human observations have the same values as emotions in animals.

In April this year, the dog world lost one of its most devoted and hardworking members, Ken Griffin. Ken was involved in many aspects of the fancy, in particular the Gundog Society, of which he was Secretary for more than 30 years. Christine Cunningham, the current President of the Gundog Society, has written a most fitting vale for Ken, which is featured on page 8. RIP Ken.
The Gundog Society celebrated 80 Years on 20-21 August at the Blue Circle grounds in New Berrima, holding two Championship Shows, an Obedience Trial and numerous Specialty shows. Coverage of the two-day Gundog Gala is featured on pages 9 and 10, with words by Christine Cunningham and photos by Ffiona Erskine and Rosemary Richards.
Grafton Dog Obedience Club Agility Trial held its annual Agility/Jumpers/Games trial on 10 and 11 September, with a record 670 entries. A special guest over the weekend was their DOGS NSW Northern Region representative Rosemary Privett, who assisted the Club with gaining a grant to replace much-needed Agility equipment, which was used on the weekend. In addition, Rosemary had another special presentation to make, and that was DOGS NSW Distinguished Service Awards to two life members of the Club, Ron and Mary Williams. To read more please turn to pages 21-22.
The Pet Show is about to hit Sydney Olympic Park early this month, 5-6 November, with DOGS NSW in attendance at the event. This will be a multi-zone consumer show that enables potential pet owners, existing pet owners and animal lovers of all kinds to immerse themselves in all things pets. The event will include opportunities to learn about cats and dogs as pets, but also provide education and information on birds, reptiles, small animals and fish. Further information about the event commences on page 12.
The DOGS NSW Complex Fundraising Committee held their Red and White Shows at Berrima on Saturday 13 August. Berrima was a great venue attracting exhibitors from three Regions. General Special Judges were Mr Robert Lucas for the White Show and Mr John Bryson for the Red Show. Rob Harbin provides coverage of the Complex Fundraising Shows from page 23.

On Easter Sunday this year, our pure bred dog community lost one of its most ardent and active members. As was his way, Ken Griffin slipped away quietly at his home, aged 86 years.
He devoted his life to all aspects of our fancy, especially Gundogs and the American Cocker Spaniel breed. This year the Gun Dog Society celebrated 80 years since its first dog events. There is no doubt that the Society would not have achieved this milestone without Ken’s commitment as its Secretary for more than 30 years. He was a Life Member of the Society and, at the time of his death, its Patron.
In 2019, Ken was awarded Honorary Life Membership of DOGS NSW in recognition of his many decades of service. Over the years, he was a member of numerous DOGS NSW committees, most recently serving as Chairman of the Retrieving and Field Trial Committee. Up to the time of his death, he was involved in running both the State and National Retrieving Championships in NSW.
Ken was born and grew up in Mosman where he enjoyed summers at Balmoral Beach. He did his National Service with the RAAF in Victoria and was employed by the PMG (now Australia Post) in its investigation branch. He married Valerie in 1956 and they had three sons.
Their love of dogs, horses and other critters meant a move from Mosman to more space in Western Sydney in 1960, where they subsequently established a boarding kennel. Their first dogs under the “Valjanane” prefix were Cocker Spaniels but American Cocker Spaniels soon became their passion. They travelled to National Specialties in the USA and imported dogs from there, including Ch. Windmills Uptown Girl in 1987. They were founders of the American Cocker Spaniel Club in 1978 and instrumental in getting approval for the three varieties of the breed to be judged separately at Breed Specialties. In 1989, Ken assisted with the formation of the Sporting Spaniel Club.
They had stopped breeding dogs when Valerie passed away in 2005, but Ken continued to give his time and expertise to the dog world. The office at DOGS NSW remembers his many visits in his Gundog Society, RAFT Committee or another capacity, usually with goodies for morning tea.
Ken is survived by his sons Steven and Phillip and their families. His youngest son Paul died at their home a few years ago. Ken will always be remembered fondly by those in the dog world (like me) who were fortunate enough to know him and experience his work ethic. His legacy will live on with the many organisations he founded and supported for almost 60 years. Rest in Peace, dear friend.

The Gundog Society celebrated 80 years at its Gundog Gala weekend on 20-21 August 2022. After a “Covid-break” of 3 years and flooding which closed the DOGS NSW grounds, the country vibe of the Blue Circle grounds in New Berrima provided the perfect venue. The Society held two Championship Shows and an Obedience Trial. Specialty shows by the Setter Club of NSW, the German Shorthaired Pointer Society, the Irish Setter Association of NSW and the Weimaraner Club of NSW rounded out the celebrations and made the weekend a true Gundog Gala, worthy of 80 years.
The delightful panel of international breeder specialists attracted many entries from interstate for all six shows. The panel comprised Irish Setter specialists Mr Robert Robinson and Mrs Patricia Robinson from the USA, and Gordon Setter specialist Ms Sylvia Schmidt from New Zealand. Ms Schmidt shared the breed judging with Mr or Mrs Robinson on both days. Mr John Bink (ACT) judged Irish Setters and Sweepstakes for the Society on Sunday. Mr Kyle Charnock (NSW) judged the Obedience Trial. We thank everyone for their involvement and our very generous sponsors for our fabulous prizes. And we thank Lilydale Kennel Club for sending us the Robinsons.
The weekend was dedicated to the memory of the Society’s Patron Ken Griffin who passed away at Easter. Through his many decades of dedicated service as the Society’s Secretary, Ken is almost singularly responsible for the Society achieving this 80 years milestone. A tribute to Ken appears on the opposite page.

The French Bulldog Club of NSW is proud to announce the results of their 71st “Pink” Champion Show held on the 10 September 2022 at Hawkesbury Showground, which raised $4,223 for the McGrath Foundation.
The generosity of members and supporters, the online Auction and Donation page, as well as the Raffle on the day, allowed us to make this contribution to the McGrath Foundation.This helps further their goal of ensuring every person experiencing breast cancer in Australia has access to a McGrath Breast Care Nurse.
, The McGrath Foundation provided the raffle prizes, which included a Boxed Cricket Ball signed by Glenn McGrath from the PINK Test of January 2021, played at the Sydney Cricket Ground, as well as a framed pink bandana, also signed by Glenn. Congratulations to Karen McAndrew for having the lucky ticket.
The Auction included a limited edition #1 of an issue of only 10 commemorative Dartington Crystal Artwork celebrating the 2002 Centenary of the French Bulldog Club of England. Commissioned by Charles Satchell (Merrowlea and Tenafly French Bulldogs UK) and featuring UK Ch Merrowlea The Enchantress ”Emma” who (at the time) was the UK breed record holder. Thanks to Liz Davidson and Michael Rosser for donating the Artwork and congratulations to Vanessa Fulham for the winning bid.
Overall, the Show was a great success for the Club, the Breed and best of all, for Breast Cancer support. The Club would like to extend our thanks to our Judge Jenny Whitney and all those who helped stage such a successful event.

Dedicated to positive pet ownership, The Pet Show is excited to be bringing the inaugural show to Sydney on the 5th and 6th of November 2022, to experience and learn everything you need to know about dogs, cats, fish, birds, reptiles and small animals.

Closing date for applications will be COB Friday 9th December, 2022. The Theory Night – Introduction to the Course will be held on Thursday 23rd February, 2023 at 7.30pm. (Please note all metropolitan candidates are required to attend this session. Zoom will be available for country candidates.)
The Theory Examination will be held on Friday 31st March, 2023.
Successful candidates will be required to attend regular training sessions held by The Obedience & Tracking Judges Committee on the second Thursday of each month.
The Practical Examination will be held on Friday 3rd November, 2023.
Courses to be held are: CCD, CCD/Novice (run concurrently) Novice, Open, UD, UDX, Rally, Tracking, Track and Search and Endurance.
Application forms can be obtained from the DOGS NSW Office.
Applicants are advised they will not be permitted to apply for both Obedience and Rally in the Judges Training Scheme in any one calendar year.
APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED UNLESS ALL REQUIREMENTS AS LISTED HEREUNDER ARE MET.

(b) A candidate for Novice Obedience Examination must:
1. have been a Ring Steward/Trial Official at not less than three (3) official trials in the past twelve months and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors prior to the date of the practical examination.
2. have judged at least six (6) recognised Community Companion Dog All Breeds Obedience Club Trials, which in the opinion of the Obedience & Tracking Judges Committee, were of sufficiently high standard and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors prior to the date of the practical examination.
3. have personally trained and trialled a dog to Companion Dog title and applied for and been granted the dog’s title and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors with their application.
4. be listed on the current DOGS NSW List of Approved Judges for Community Companion Dog Obedience.
1. have been a Ring Steward/Trial Official at not less than three (3) official trials in the past twelve months and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors prior to the date of the practical examination.

3. have personally trained and trialled a dog to Utility Title standard and gained at least one qualification in Utility Class and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors with their application.
4. be listed on the current DOGS NSW List of Approved Judges for Open Obedience
(e) A candidate for Utility Excellent Obedience examination must:
1. have been a Ring Steward/Trial Official at not less than three (3) official trials in the past twelve months and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors prior to the date of the practical examination.
2. have judged at least six (6) recognised Utility All Breeds Obedience Club Trials, which in the opinion of the Obedience & Tracking Judges Committee, were of sufficiently high standard and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors prior to the date of the practical examination.
3. have personally trained a dog to Utility Title standard and applied and been granted the dog’s title and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors with their application.
4. be listed on the current DOGS NSW List of Approved Judges for Utility Obedience.
(f) A candidate for Tracking Trial examination must:
1. be a financial member of DOGS NSW Ltd
2. be at least eighteen (18) years of age
3. be a resident of NSW
4. apply in writing and submit to DOGS NSW with the application, a written certificate from an Affiliate conducting Tracking Trials that he/she:
a) has been an active member of that Club for not less than three (3) years.
b) has been an active Instructor at a Club that conducts Tracking training.
c) has been an Official Chief Steward at two (2) and have been a Tracklayer for the Tracking Dog Section and Tracking Dog Excellent Section at least three (3) recognised Tracking Trials.
d) have personally trained and trialled a dog to Tracking Dog Excellent and applied and been granted the dog’s title.
(g) A candidate for Track and Search Dog Judges Examination must: (As per ANKC Track & Search Trial Judges Training Scheme –effective Jan 2019)
1. be a financial member of Dogs NSW for a least 3 years prior to the application
2. be over eighteen (18) years of age
3. be a resident of NSW
4. have an active and ongoing participation in the sport of Track & Search or conducting Track & Search Trials.
5. have personally trained and trialled a dog to a Track & Search Dog title and stewarded at a minimum of two sanctioned Track & Search Dog trials.
1. be a financial Member of DOGS NSW.
2. be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
3. be a resident of NSW.
4. apply in writing (on such form as may be required) to the Obedience & Tracking Judges and Judges Training Scheme Committee.
5. submit with the application a written statement from an affiliated Dog Obedience Club that the Candidate has been an active member of that Club for not less than three (3) years.
6. submit a statement providing full details of the Candidate’s involvement with Endurance Tests.
7. have personally trained a dog to Endurance Test applied and been granted the dog’s title and supply full details to the Board of Directors, and
8. if accepted as a Candidate, sign a release of DOGS NSW in respect of any liability arising out of the Examination, in such form as DOGS NSW may require
1. be a financial member of DOGS NSW.
2. be at least eighteen (18) years of age.

The German Pinscher (original name Deutscher Pinscher, FCI No. 184) is a medium-sized breed of dog, a Pinscher type that originated in Germany.
The German Pinscher is a breed that dates back as the original dog almost 400 years. These dogs were bred in litters of smooth and rough coat dogs. The rough-coated dogs bred on to be the modern-day Standard Schnauzer while the smooth coat that closely resembles the modern-day Pinscher, almost died out post-WWII.
From 1950 to 1958, no litters had been registered. Credit is attributed to Werner Jung for collecting several of the breed in 1958 to continue the German Pinscher as we know the breed today. In recent years, The Finish Kennel Club granted permission for a special breeding program where quality, health-tested standard Schnauzers were crossed once back into a line of GPs. These offspring breeding “pure” and granted full registration at 5th generation.
The German Pinscher is the forefather of both the Dobermann and Miniature Pinscher. As a general-purpose farm dog, the Pinschers were used as guardians for coaches. They also lived in homesteads where they were used to kill vermin, a job they did by instinct, as such behaviour did not need to be trained into the breed. Even today you can observe German Pinschers searching for and finding rats and mice in open areas and in homes. This high prey drive is a good reason not to leave a German Pinscher off-lead outside of a fenced area.
Well balanced, smooth coated, medium size with elegant and flowing outlines but strong and well muscled. 1. The standard calls for an “Approximately Square” dog. The original German standard measured the dog as square from Height at withers = Length of back. In the translation to English, the standard records the Height at withers = Length of body, forcing some breeders to lose the hallmark and well-described “Forechest and depth of brisket”.

High-spirited and self-possessed. Alert, good-natured, playful, loyal, watchful and fearless. 1.
A well-bred German Pinscher will be a loving companion with an even temperament.
German Pinschers are very energetic working dogs, in many cases requiring several hours of exercise a day. Accordingly, a large, securely fenced yard is highly recommended for anyone considering the breed as a pet and the owner is to be mindful of training them appropriately.
The breed is highly intelligent and 10 minutes a day exercising their mind will also help with energy levels. German Pinschers are most happy when they have a “Job”.
Socialisation from puppyhood is a must, as a high prey drive is common in the breed, so in a city environment, they need to learn to control their impulses.
You can find German Pinschers in the conformation ring, at obedience, tracking, or agility trials, and at work in tracking and scent detection. He also works as a service dog, therapy dog, and as a pampered pet, who enjoys the comforts of family life. He can be assertive and overbearing, and he’ll take over your heart and home in a matter of seconds. Don’t kid yourself: he needs a firm, experienced owner who is consistent in training and good at establishing rules right from the beginning. 3
The German Pinscher is generally a healthy breed. Breeders have worked hard to clear the breed from hereditary conditions such as Hip dysplasia and early onset Cataracts and continue to test annually for eyes until 8yrs & Hip and Elbow x-rays at 2 years. Von Willebrands has all but been eradicated from the breed. DNA testing has become standard practice among breeders to clear dogs of degenerative myelopathy.
Life expectancy is 12 14 years.

Grafton Showground was buzzing with activity as our little country club held our annual Agility/Jumpers/Games trial on 10 & 11 September with a record 670 entries. After a few showers in the lead-up to the trial, the event was held in glorious Grafton Spring weather.
A special visitor to our trial was our local DOGS NSW Northern Region representative, Rosemary Privett. Rosemary assisted our club in gaining a grant to replace our heavy old scramble and dog walk with new lighter versions which were made full use of on the weekend. Thank you, Rosemary!
Judges Rachel Bulloch (QLD) and Bob Mills (QLD) kept things moving so we were able to get through all the classes in good time. Club members helped with everything, from setting up ring equipment, and stewarding, to helping in the canteen. Our canteen, organised by Club Secretary Mary Williams, has a reputation for delicious home-made food so was well supported.
Then there was our monster raffle, with the number one prize of a beautiful doggie-themed quilt, hand-made by talented club member Gerri Robinson.
With wonderful weather, good food and lots of happy competitors, the trial was voted a great success. A big thank you to everyone who helped on the weekend (too many to name individually) many hands make light work as the saying goes.

In between events at our hectic Agility/Jumpers/Games trial held on 10 & 11 September, we took time out for a very special presentation to two hard-working, long-term club members.
Ron and Mary Williams have been members of Grafton Dog Obedience Club for 46 years and are both Life Members of our club. At our Agility Trial, Ron and Mary were each presented with a DOGS NSW Distinguished Service Award by Northern Region representative, Rosemary Privett (see pictured below).
Both Mary and Ron have been on the Club Executive Committee since the late 1970s and qualified as RNSWCC (DOGS NSW) Instructors in 1982. Both continue to be Senior Instructors with our Club, including Obedience, Agility, Rally, Trick Dog and Scent Work between them. Over the years, they have taken on many roles within the club; Ron as President for 45 years and Obedience Trial Steward for 40 years, while Mary has taken on roles as Secretary (a position she has held for many years), Trial Secretary, and canteen organiser for our club events for many years. Ron and Mary regularly donate prizes for our trials and our club annual presentations (many of those prizes featuring Mary’s beautiful quilting).
For many years Mary also fundraised by baking delicious treats for sale at afternoon tea on training days and continues to organise the camp kitchen at our tracking trials. Mary also regularly organises workshops for our club.
Ron and Mary have owned French Bulldogs in the past (one of their Frenchies was the first in Australia to earn an Obedience title); a Staffordshire Bull Terrier; and have owned and bred Border Terriers for many years, breeding under their Willbeauette prefix. Their dogs have earned titles in Obedience, Rally, Tracking (5 dogs earning Tracking Champion), Track & Search and Endurance and have recently started competing in Tricks and Scent Work.
With an interest in breed shows as well as performance, Ron and Mary have also earned one Grand Champion and 13 Champion titles with their dogs over the years, with four of their dogs becoming Dual Champions (Tracking), plus one Champion and Neuter Champion.
Both Ron and Mary are tireless workers for our club (just reading about their efforts is enough to make anyone feel tired) and our club members are delighted that their contributions to the dog world, and to our club, in particular, have been recognised by DOGS NSW.
WORDS: Carole BryantRain, rain and more rain! The DOGS NSW Complex Fundraising Shows were postponed in June, rescheduled and it looked as though they would be cancelled until all was moved to Berrima in the Southern Highlands.
This may have been a first for DOGS NSW Shows, moving to a Regional venue, but it was a great success and a fantastic weekend. Exhibitors were waiting to attend shows, with weeks of rain leading up to the event, and they were not disappointed. Show gear was cleaned, the cobwebs dusted, and vans emptied and repacked in readiness. The Complex Fundraising and Public Relations Committee combined to have a four-show weekend.
There was sun, wind and a bit of rain - typical Highlands weather - but most took it in their stride and enjoyed catching up with friends. 14 rings were set up for Saturday, no mean feat! The DOGS NSW Grounds staff transported prizes, ring gear and dog food to the grounds, and we thank them for their help. A special thank you to those exhibitors who helped set up the rings on Friday and pack down on Sunday. All done in two hours. Fantastic effort.
Great sponsorship from Royal Canin was well received and our Raindrop raffle was a hit raising over $1000. With rising petrol prices, Berrima was a great venue attracting exhibitors from three Regions and the ACT. For most, it provided a rare opportunity for an easy 1-1/2 hour drive with no tolls to attend a DOGS NSW event.
Most of the panel were judging their Group for the first time and with an entry of around 600 per show, it was fantastic to see exhibitors supporting our new Judges. The New Exhibitor Sweepstakes had a magnificent entry, showing that the dog show world is attracting a great many people to the fancy.
A huge thank you to all those who supported the Trainee Judges Sweepstakes in the morning, allowing our trainees to judge a variety of dogs in their respective groups in the lead-up to their exams.
The shows saw the introduction of our Dogs Australia’s newest breed, the Australasian Bosdog. Brian Cranbourne brought ‘Ned’ to be introduced to the show and we were not disappointed. ‘Ned’ was a character and a great example of the breed and we thank Brian, his daughter and ‘Ned’ for attending and talking with our Judges, trainees and exhibitors.
Overall a ‘feel good’ day that welcomed many exhibitors back to showing who have had limited opportunities throughout the year due to bad weather. Thank you to everyone who made the weekend possible.

Australia’s 29 million pets look set to benefit from a more effective treatment for Giardia, a common intestinal infection in dogs and cats, thanks to a collaboration between academia and industry.
Pharmaceutical scientists from five Australian universities are partnering with veterinary pharmaceutical company Neoculi Pty Ltd to develop a new drug to treat Giardia, which affects at least 15 per cent of dogs, particularly puppies, and approximately 12 per cent of cats.
Existing treatments on the market are ineffective and have significant drawbacks, according to University of South Australia pharmaceutical scientist Professor Sanjay Garg, one of the key collaborators on the three-year project, led by the University of Newcastle.
Professor Garg says current drugs have limited effectiveness due to parasitic resistance, require multiple treatments and have toxic side effects.
“The drug we are developing is safe and effective in one single dose. We are aiming to produce a palatable formulation that pets will take without any resistance.” Prof Garg says. It should be available within three years.
Australia has the highest pet ownership rate in the world, with 40 per cent of households owning a dog and 27 per cent owning a cat, incurring significant costs in the order of $12 billion a year, with veterinary bills accounting for ab out 25 per cent.
“It costs each household around $1627 per dog each year and $962 per cat, so anything we can do to make veterinary drugs more cost-effective is a win-win for animals and owners alike.”

The Competition and Consumer Act came into force
