Chairman's Report
Greetings to all!
Congratulations to those elected to the Board in the recent RNSWCC Elections.
COVID Restrictions
COVID continues to roll around Sydney and in sporadic pockets around the State. It looks like we will continue to be under some restrictions until the vaccination rates are up around the 7080% level. Shows will continue to be off the calendar until we have greater safety to move around. The country areas, when affected, are more likely to be short lockdowns, however, getting greater Sydney and Newcastle under control will be more difficult and take longer.
Rehoming Puppies
Due to this ongoing COVID situation, we will continue to have issues getting puppies out and into their new homes. Having puppy viewings has become a thing of the past, unless you do extensive videos, and socialisation is greatly reduced outside of your own home.
With rehoming puppies, you can travel short distances, hand puppies over front fences and so on. In Victoria, you could get permission from the police to pick up puppies if pre-ordered, but this can apparently vary according to who you get on the phone. You may be able get permission from the Police or Service NSW for limited travel to deliver or pick up a puppy. Transport companies are allowed to travel, but with various country areas suddenly in hard lockdown, this reduces the areas in which they can drop off. Additionally most of them are booked solid for several weeks ahead.
You will certainly need to plan well ahead about how to get your puppies to their new homes.
Socialisation of puppies
In public areas, many more people are walking their often reluctant puppies and dogs several times a day to get them (and more importantly) themselves out of the house. At least the socialisation is good for the puppies even if they are exhausted from all the walks!

Given the extended lockdown and tighter COVID restrictions in Greater Sydney and parts of NSW, many veterinary clinics and/or hospitals are moving to low, or no contact visits. While this is a difficult situation and far from ideal, you are still able to take your pet to the vet, although you may not be able to be present during consultations. The University of Sydney’s Dr Anne Quain had some tips to improve pet, vet and pet-owner care and communication during restrictions and have listed the five things owners need to know to avoid any further stress and confusion. The article commences on page 8.
In June 2021, NSW Parliament passed the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Amendment Act 2021, which made several important changes to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 (POCTA). These changes include increased maximum financial penalties and gaol time for significant animal welfare offences including cruelty, aggravated cruelty and failing to provide food, drink or shelter. Please turn to page 9 to view the table outlining both the previous and amended penalties.
Detector dogs gives ‘dogs with jobs’ a whole new perspective as the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment’s biosecurity detector dogs help to protect Australia from exotic pests and diseases. An article, reprinted with permission from © The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment 2020, outlines why these dogs play such vital roles in the community and includes where the dogs are sourced, how they are trained, what they are trained to find and where, their job’s longevity and retirement. This most informative article commences on page 11.
Morris Animal Foundation answers pet owners most common questions regarding dental disease in dogs and cats and its prevention. Please turn to page 21 to find out more.
Royal Canin have kindly given us permission to reprint two of their veterinary articles: Fading Puppy Syndrome and Coprophagia. The former title is a term used to describe puppies that are apparently normal at birth but die within 5-10 days of birth. This article discusses causes, the vulnerability of a neonate and the importance of colostrum. Coprophagia describes a condition where a dog may ingest their own faeces, the faeces of another dog or even another animal. This condition is distressing to owners, however, sometimes there are underlying behavioural/ medical reasons behind this. Both articles do request for owners to seek further advice and assistance as soon as possible from your veterinarian. The Fading Puppy Syndrome article commences page 24 and Coprophagia follows on from page 26.
Finally, the winner of July’s ‘Serotonin’ competition, was Jorden Morris with gift vouchers also going to runner-up winners Carmen Kong, Kathy Drew and Sue Turner. Congratulations to all winners!

No-contact vet visits: 5 things you
need
to know
Keeping you, your pet, and veterinary teams safe during lockdown
Given the extended lockdown and tighter restrictions in Greater Sydney and parts of NSW, most vet clinics are moving to low or no contact visits.
While you can still take your pet to the vet, the experience may be a little different to what you’re used to. To ensure social distancing requirements are met, you may not be able to be present while your pet is examined and treated.
The University of Sydney’s Dr Anne Quain has published research on stressors experienced by vet teams at the advent of the pandemic, which showed a big source of stress was ensuring clients adhere to biosecurity protocols. Communication may also be trickier due to mask wearing and physical distancing.
A companion animal researcher and veterinary practitioner, Dr Quain has some tips to improve pet, vet, and pet-owner care during this lockdown:
1. Make an appointment or, if an emergency, call ahead to let the team know you are coming. It can take a bit longer to get an appointment, so for non-emergencies, give as much notice as you can.
2. Only one person should accompany the animal to the vet, wherever possible.
3. Provide the veterinary team with concise written or typed dot points listing your concerns or email them ahead of time. You may also want to include photos, for example, an area on the animal’s body you are concerned about; or videos where the symptoms may be intermittent (e.g., of coughing, limping). Ensure your phone is charged and switched on so that the veterinary team can call you for additional information.
4. Follow government advice. That means checking in, wearing a mask, and physically distancing while you wait.
5. Please be patient with veterinary teams. Waiting times may be extended.
“We know that this is a stressful time for everyone, especially those worried about their pets,” said Dr Quain from the University’s School of Veterinary Science.
“Pet owners should be assured that regular and emergency veterinary care continues to be available. They can help their veterinary teams provide ongoing care to animals by taking these steps.”

Increased penalties and improved court orders passed by Parliament
In June 2021, NSW Parliament passed the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Amendment Act 2021 which made several important changes to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 (POCTA).
What are the changes?
The changes increase maximum financial penalties and gaol time for significant animal welfare offences including cruelty, aggravated cruelty and failing to provide food, drink or shelter. These penalties are now some of the highest in Australia. Please see the table below outlining the current and new penalties.

Non-compliance with a court order
Individual: $2,750
Individual: $5,500 and/or 6 months imprisonment
The changes also expand the range of tools available to courts to effectively deal with animal welfare cases by introducing interim disqualification orders, as well as making existing POCTA court orders and alternative summons provisions available for the most serious animal cruelty offences. The changes also increase the financial penalty and introduce a gaol term for the offence of failing to comply with a court order under both POCTA and the Crimes Act 1900.
Additional changes see persons guilty of certain animal cruelty offences under the Crimes Act 1900 automatically prohibited from purchasing, owning or working with an animal, as well as an extension to POCTA’s statutory limitation period and a revised ‘Animal Welfare Code of Practice - Breeding dogs and cats’ published before 31 August 2021.
Why have the changes been made?
The NSW Government made these changes as an interim step ahead of delivering its commitment to reform the NSW animal welfare legislative framework. The NSW Government will continue to consult with the community as the reforms progress.

Tributes to a true Boxer enthusiast
Mrs Margaret Clinton-Clintstock Boxers
It is with sadness that we advise of the recent passing of Mrs Margaret Clinton on Thursday, 3 June 2021.
Margaret was a strong independent woman and an excellent role model for my sister and I, as she was the only Aunty we had whilst growing up. Although her family didn’t have dogs as pets, when growing up in Bondi, Margaret had an opportunity to mind a friend’s dog while living in Hong Kong and instantly took a likely to boxers. Ultimately, she devoted her life to the boxer breed.
My childhood memories include Margaret coming for Saturday evening dinners, while my siblings and I took delight in hiding her cigarettes and lighter. Taking this in good humour, she would chase us around the house until we returned them. My brother and I had trips to the drive-in movies at Matraville in her red Austin minivan, with her beloved boxer Joss occupying the cargo space. Margaret also took us on a camping holiday, when she did the rounds of the NSW country dog shows, taking all four of her nieces and nephews to a family property near Warren in the 1980s.
~
Written by Margaret’s niece, Jane Robertson
I had the pleasure of calling Margaret my dear friend, and I already miss our weekly calls. Margaret was a long-standing member of both the Boxer Club of NSW and the Western Districts Boxer Club. After living abroad, she returned to Sydney in 1977 and with her came her first English import CH. Taipan of Felcign “Joss” to those who knew him. Later on, came many others: Steynmere Twist and Turn, sent to her by the late Bruce Cattanach and “Storm” Alert at Swiftwood, just to name few. Margaret made up many Champions under her own prefix Clintstock Boxers and collaborated with breeders here and in New Zealand in her years in the breed.
Margaret loved a good pedigree. She was a firm believer in looking at the dog in front of her, but also found it important to look back through the pedigree at the dams and sires behind that dog and this is how she bred and keep consistency through Clintstock. She was generous with who she allowed to use her stud dogs and got great pleasure seeing her dogs behind a lot of successful show dogs over time. She was a true lover of the breed and wanted to see the boxer continue to grow and prosper.
Always known to speak her mind, you always knew where you stood with Margaret. She enjoyed engaging in a healthy debate about dogs and was disappointed when the time came that she was unable to show her dogs herself. She had a lot of lovely people in our hobby help her in many ways over the last few years, including showing her last boxer CH. Valeska Fancy This (IMP NZ) “Cruise.” She decided it was time for a ‘down size’ a few years ago and into her life came “‘Lily,” a beautiful French bulldog, who she loved dearly. A lot of you will remember Margaret, over the last 10 years, sitting ringside watching boxer judging then making her way to the Non Sporting ring to watch the Frenchie judging.
People may have found her passing as a shock, as she was a private person, never publicly telling anyone just how ill she had become. I remember going to visit her in the hospital in late April and all she wanted to talk about was the Sydney Royal Easter Show and how much she enjoyed watching the live stream. She hadn’t lost her sense of humour and we spent hours laughing and reminiscing about the ‘good old days’. Desperate for a glass of sauvignon and lemonade, I’m happy to say it was smuggled in to her!
The Boxer community and dog world as a whole has lost another loyal and passionate dog lover in every sense of the word. May she rest in peace with her beloved fur companions.

DETECTOR DOGS
The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment’s biosecurity detector dogs play a vital role in helping to protect Australia from exotic pests and diseases. Detector dogs are used in conjunction with a number of other biosecurity strategies and detection technologies to help protect Australia’s agricultural industries, environment, economy and human health. The department’s detector dog teams are deployed at international airport terminals and mail facilities throughout Australia.
Why is the role of detector dogs so important?
Since 1992, biosecurity detector dogs have actively contributed to Australia’s frontline defence against damaging biosecurity risks.
Their role in helping protect Australia from exotic pests and disease is becoming increasingly important. The number of international passengers, cargo and mail items arriving in Australia is growing every year. This places increasing pressure on existing biosecurity strategies and detection technologies. Detector dogs are a fast, versatile and mobile detection technology that can screen across a range of environments. Therefore, detector dogs play an important role in strengthening our biosecurity systems in response to a growing biosecurity threat.
DOGS NSW ۔ September 2021 11 FEATURE
Where are the detector dogs from?
Suitable Labradors are sourced from the Australian Border Force (ABF) detector dog breeding program.
Detector dog training courses are conducted over an eight week period at our national training facility in Brisbane. Throughout the course novice detector dogs are trained to detect a variety of biosecurity risk material ranging from meat, fresh plant material, seeds and fresh fruit.
Novice detector dogs that are unsuitable for the role of a biosecurity detector dog are returned to the ABF for placement with other agencies.
Novice detector dogs that successfully complete the training then graduate and are deployed to their new region for a further two months of transitional training.
From just a pair of dogs in Sydney and Brisbane, to dogs deployed across the country, from Perth to Norfolk Island, the program has grown considerably.
Although the department initially used Beagles, Labradors now make up the entire canine workforce. Their extraordinary sense of smell and cooperative, gentle nature make them top-notch detectors.
What are detector dogs trained to find?
Detector dogs are trained to find items that could bring pests or diseases into Australia, such as certain food, plant material and animal products.
On average, our detector dogs can be expected to find up to 9,000 biosecurity risk items during their working life. The three most common items the detector dogs find are meat, seeds and fruit.
The Travelling or returning to Australia page lists some of the items that dogs are trained to detect as they pose a biosecurity threat to Australia: https://www.agriculture.gov.au/travelling/travel-agent-resources/factsheet-travelling-returning
We are continually looking to modernise our detector dog capabilities in order to strengthen our biosecurity system. The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment has worked with researchers at the University of New England to optimise the training of biosecurity detector dogs to detect the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB). The BMSB is an insect pest that is not found in Australia. It is important to protect Australia against BMSB because they are a nuisance pest and pose a high risk to agricultural crops.
These detections provide critical protection for our $60 billion dollar agricultural industries and the health of our communities, economy, environment and unique wildlife.

FEATURE
Where are detector dogs deployed?
The detector dog program works side-by-side with other government departments and officials, including their canine compatriots from the Australian Border Force.
Our detector dogs operate in international airports and mail centres around Australia. Locations include Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Norfolk Island. You can tell the difference by the bright red jackets worn by our biosecurity detector dogs.
At the international airport passenger terminal, our dogs may sit beside a passenger or baggage. This is called a ‘passive detection’. A passive response is given a food reward.
Make sure you know what is in your bags as our Labs will sniff out everything from large food items to the smallest of seeds.
When screening objects in mail facilities the dogs will dig at the source of a target odour. This is called an ‘active detection’. An active response is given a play reward.
Why are detector dogs trained in-house?
Detector dog and handler training courses are now delivered by specialist biosecurity trainers within the department. These courses were previously conducted by external training providers. In-house training was implemented to develop a nationally consistent detector dog and handler capability by optimising the use of detector dogs teams across all operational scenarios.
Since the shift to in-house training, novice detector dogs are trained with experienced handlers, and novice handlers are trained with experienced detector dogs. The in-house detector dog handler training course runs for five weeks, as opposed to eight weeks with an external training provider.
The eight-week in-house detector dog training program allows the department to train all dogs as ‘multipurpose’ detector dogs. Multipurpose detector dogs are trained to work in different environments and deliver an appropriate response in the environment in which they are operating. When the dogs detect biosecurity risk material in an international passenger terminal they will have a ‘passive response’ and will sit beside a passenger or their baggage.
In-house training also allows the department to continually refine and modernise detector dog team capability by providing ongoing training. For example, detector dogs can be trained quickly to detect emerging biosecurity risk material such as BMSB.
We select our detector dogs from the Australian Border Force breeding program. The puppies are fostered by volunteer families until they are around 18 months old, when they are selected for work with the ABF, Australian Federal Police or with us, combatting biosecurity threats.
Why use Labradors?
Labradors have practical purposes. They have an extraordinary sense of smell, are co-operative, gentle with people and possess extreme hunt, food and retrieve drives. Because of their strong retrieve drive, Labradors can be trained as multipurpose dogs.
Labradors are also large and agile, making it easy for them to screen larger items at airports and mail centres.
DOGS NSW ۔ September 2021 13
How long do the dogs work for and what happens when they retire?
We put the young dogs through a rigorous eight-week in-house training program. From there, the dogs have a working life of about six to eight years.
When they retire from their biosecurity role they are placed into loving homes, in many cases with one of their former handlers.
A Brief History of Biosecurity Detector dogs
1991: Australia contracted a detector dog trainer from the US Department of Agriculture to help develop a pilot program in Australia.
1992 : In February the first two detector dog teams became operational in Sydney and Brisbane.
1995: The department’s detector dog operations were expanded by introducing active response dogs into international mail centres.
2002: After ten years of operation the program had expanded to 26 teams including six teams undertaking state government biosecurity work
2009: Labradors were introduced into airport and seaport operations. Until this time only beagles were used as passive response detector dogs in these environments.
2011: Based on the success of a pilot program conducted in Brisbane, conversion of passive response L abradors to multipurpose dogs commenced.
2012: The department celebrated twenty years of detector dogs as a part of a smart, integrated biosecurity system in Australia.
2015: First in-house training course delivered by the department for detector dog handlers.
2016: First in-house training course delivered by the department for detector dogs.
2018: The department trained its first detector dog to detect Brown Marmorated Stink Bug. The Department continues to modernise and evolve the detector dog program as part of an integrated biosecurity system.

Bracco Italiano
History
This dog of ancient Italian origin, used for bird hunting, has modelled itself and developed over the ages; from the hunting of yesteryear by means of nets, he has adapted himself to the present hunting and shooting. Frescoes from the 14th century are proof of the indisputable timelessness of the Italian Pointer over the centuries, whether either regarding his morphology (appearance) or his aptitudes at hunting as a pointing dog. 1
Appearance
Of strong and harmonious construction with powerful appearance. The preferred subjects are those with lean limbs, well developed muscles, well defined lines with a markedly sculpted head and a very obvious lower orbital chiselling, elements which all contribute to give distinction to this breed. 1.
Important proportions: Length of the body is the same or a little more then the height at the withers. Length of head is equal to 4/10 of the height at the withers; it’s width, measured at the level of the zygomatic arches, is less than half its length. Skull and muzzle are of equal length. 1.
Sizes: Height at the withers: Between 55 and 67 cms. Preferred size for males is 58-67 cms. Preferred size for females: 55-62 cms
Weight: Between 25 and 40 kgs depending on size 1.
Temperament & Suitability
Braccos are very much a people-loving dog and thrive on human companionship, having a strong need to be close to their people. They are a particularly good family dog, and many have a strong love of children. They get along well with other dogs and pets, if trained to do so; it is, after all, a hunting breed and must be taught what to chase and what not to.
They are very willing to please as long as they have decided that your idea is better than theirs. Obedience training is a must for a Bracco, and the more is asked of them, the better they do. Harsh reprimands do not work with this breed unless the reprimand is a fair one, but some dogs need to be reminded who is actually in charge. Although not an aggressive breed, many Braccos will alert if there is a reason and some will bark or growl if there’s a good reason. 2.
Being loyal and loving to their human families, they will sometimes get separation anxiety if left alone for long periods of time. It’s best to take them on long walks in order to expend their large amounts of energy. These dogs are well suited for households of all sizes. 3.
This breed loves to hunt and they excel at it. In fact, a non-hunting Bracco is not a happy Bracco, and will act out in various other ways. Hunting is an area in which the Bracco can excel and this can be a great opportunity for training the dog to connect with the owner. 2.

Temperament & Suitability
Calm and intelligent, this active breed aims to please and training should be gentle and consistent. They are an active breed, but require more mental exercise than physical exercise to keep them happy. A Bracco owner can teach games like hide-and-seek (an object or person), which fits into the breed’s original and current usage and keeps them mentally active. 2.
Care
As with all dogs, you should keep up with your Bracco Italiano’s regular veterinary checkups to detect any health concerns early. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy.
Bracco Italianos are prone to weight gain, and they have high energy levels. Make sure your dog gets at least one good half hour, to an hour long walk per day with a few good, active play session and shorter walks mixed in.
Check their ears for debris and pests daily and clean them as recommended by your vet. Trim your dog’s nails before they get too long—usually once or twice per month. They should not be clicking against the floor. Your groomer can help with this. Your main concern when it comes to your Bracco Italiano’s care will be maintaining their oral health. You should brush their teeth daily, as many dogs are prone to dental issues. Your veterinarian can instruct you on how to brush your dog’s teeth properly.
Grooming is fairly easy because their coats are short and dense. Use a grooming mitt once a week to keep them looking their best. Because they tend to have shorter coats, Bracco Italianos aren’t particularly suited for extreme weather. Prepare accordingly when bringing your dog somewhere extremely cold or hot. 3.
Health
The Bracco Italiano might be predisposed to the some of the same conditions that most dog breeds in the pointing group also face. While most are generally healthy, some may be prone to a few health issues, which is why it is important to maintain good care and regular veterinary checkups.
Some of the more common health problems the Bracco Italiano suffer from include:
• Hip dysplasia
• Entropion
• Umbilical hernias
• Ear mites

Bracco Interesting Facts
1. They Almost Went Extinct
One of the most interesting facts about Bracco Italianos is that the breed were nearly extinct. Despite their intense popularity during the Renaissance, this breed began to decline in the 1800s, due to many health problems. Breeders were able to rework the breed to be much healthier and it was brought back from near extinction. Sadly, however, this breed is still quite rare outside its native Italy.
2. The Bracco Italiano is an Ancient Breed
The Bracco Italiano is the oldest pointing dog breed in existence, dating as far back as 4th century BC! This breed was often given to nobles, and may have even been the distant ancestor of the English Pointer. Bracco Italianos were most popular during the Renaissance, when they were featured in all sorts of paintings.
3. They Are Serious Hunters
Also known as the Italian Pointer, the Bracco Italiano is one of the most popular Italian bird dog breeds. In the past, before the use of firearms, the breed was used to drive birds into nets. They were also used by falconers to flush out game for their falcons to catch. After the invention of the gun, breeders were able to modify this dog’s skillset to still be an effective hunting companion, which included pointing and also retrieving game.
4. They’re a Quiet Dog Breed
One of the most surprising fun facts about Bracco Italianos is that they have a low tendency to bark. This means they are often a popular choice for people who prefer quieter dog breeds. However, because they don’t regularly bark, Bracco Italianos are not suitable watchdogs. They are calm and rarely wary, so don’t expect a Bracco Italiano to warn you about any intruders!
5. They’re Very Affectionate
Many hunting dog breeds are great at their jobs, but aren’t typically the best choice for companionship. The Bracco Italiano is unique because, while it is known for its hunting prowess, it also makes an amazing family companion. In fact, even though they’re best known as hunting dogs, today they’re becoming increasingly popular as just companions.
6. They Can Be a Bit Clingy
Most hunting dogs are known for being independent and even aloof, however, this couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to Bracco Italianos! These dogs are highly affectionate and are known to follow their owners all over the place. Bracco Italianos are incredibly loving and devoted pets. Even people who don’t hunt love having this breed as part of the family!
7. They Require Early Training
Bracco Italianos are intelligent dogs, but they also have a stubborn streak. This breed needs to be trained at an early age, or else they have a tendency to do whatever they want! Furthermore, their high prey drive means that they should always be kept on a leash when outside, otherwise they have a tendency to run off and chase other animals.
8. The Bracco Italiano Needs Plenty of Exercise!
Even though a lot of Bracco Italiano lovers bring home this dog breed as a companion, these dogs still need a lot of exercise! They were bred to be tireless hunters, and as such, they have high exercise needs. Bracco Italianos require a large, fenced-in yard to stretch their legs, as well as daily walks and runs.

Dogs act jealously even when they don’t see their rival
Dogs are one of humanity’s most-beloved animal companions. They share our homes and seem to reciprocate our affections. But could this emotional bond extend into feelings of jealousy?
To help answer that question, a team of researchers gauged the reactions of a group of dogs when their owners appeared to shower attention on a perceived rival.
Past surveys have shown that more than 80% of dog owners report observing jealous behaviours from their dogs: vocalisations, agitated behaviour, pulling on a leash, when they give attention to other dogs.
New research published in the journal Psychological Science supports these observations and finds that dogs also exhibit jealous behaviours when they merely imagine that their owner is interacting with a potential rival, in this case, a highly realistic artificial dog.
“Research has supported what many dog owners firmly believe, that dogs exhibit jealous behaviour when their human companion interacts with a potential rival,” said Amalia Bastos with the University of Auckland and lead author on the paper. “We wanted to study this behaviour more fully to determine if dogs could, like humans, mentally represent a situation that evoked jealousy.”
Dogs appear to be one of the few species that might display jealous behaviours in ways similar to a human child showing jealousy when their mother gives affection to another child. In humans, jealousy is closely linked with self-awareness, which is one reason animal-cognition researchers are so interested in studying jealousy and other secondary emotions in animals.
To test how and when dogs display jealous behaviour, the researchers presented 18 dogs with situations where they could imagine a social interaction between their human companion and either a realistic, fake dog or a fleece cylinder. The fake dog served as a potential rival for attention while the cylinder served as a control.
In the experiment, the dogs observed the fake-dog rival positioned next to their owner. A barrier was then placed between the dog and the potential rival obscuring them from view. Despite blocking the line of sight, the dogs forcefully attempted to reach their owners when they appeared to stroke the rival fake dog behind the barrier. In a repeat experiment using a fleece cylinder rather than a fake dog, the dogs pulled on the lead with far less force.
Through their study, Bastos and her colleagues found that dogs showed three human-like signatures of jealous behaviour. Jealous behaviour emerged only when their owner interacted with a perceived social rival and not an inanimate object; occurred as a consequence of that interaction and not due to a potential rival’s mere presence; and emerged even for an out-of-sight interaction between their owner and a social rival.
“These results support claims that dogs display jealous behaviour. They also provide the first evidence that dogs can mentally represent jealousy inducing social interactions,” said Bastos. “Previous studies confounded jealous behaviour with play, interest, or aggression, because they never tested the dogs’ reactions to the owner and the social rival being present in the same room but not interacting.”
“There is still plenty of work to do to establish the extent of the similarities between the minds of humans and other animals, especially in terms of understanding the nature of nonhuman animals’ emotional experiences,” said Bastos. “It is too early to say whether dogs experience jealousy as we do, but it is now clear that they react to jealousy-inducing situations, even if these occur out-of-sight.”

Taking a Bite out of Dental Disease
PRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM MORRIS ANIMAL FOUNDATION
Pet dental care has come a long way in the last 40 years. For decades, dental care was mostly limited to dental extractions and the occasional cleaning. Now, a wide range of services, from dental X-rays to root canals, is available for both dogs and cats.
Despite big strides made in oral health awareness among pet owners, there remain some misconceptions about dental care for pets. Add to this the flood of information available online and it can be tough for pet owners to know what’s best for their cat or dog when it comes to maintaining good oral health.
We asked Dr Sandy Manfra Marretta, Professor Emerita at the University of Illinois, and a board-certified veterinary dentist and surgeon, to answer a few questions pet owners may have based on her years of experience as a veterinary dentist and educator.
What are the most common dental problems diagnosed in dogs and cats?
The most common dental problems affecting dogs and cats include:
• Periodontal disease, especially in smaller breed dogs and in all breeds as they mature.
• In cats, tooth resorptive lesions are very common.
• Cracked teeth in both dogs and cats, with secondary endodontic disease if the dental pulp is exposed.
• Oral tumours, which affect both cats and dogs.
DOGS NSW ۔ September 2021 21
FEATURE
What are the most common signs of dental disease in dogs and cats?
There are several things I have encountered, and that I tell owners to look for:
• A pet suddenly becoming head shy (doesn’t want you to pet them).
• A pet becoming reluctant to have its mouth looked at or touched.
• Chewing on one side of the mouth or shifting food from one side to the other.
• Blood in saliva, water or the food bowl.
• Odour from the mouth in either a dog or cat is not normal – don’t chalk it up to doggy breath!
• Excessive drooling as well as an increase in sneezing or even nasal discharge.
• Two signs more common in cats are reclusive behaviour or picking up food then running from the food bowl due to pain.
• No longer interested in hard treats.
We know that lots of older pets have dental problems and a concern we hear a lot from people is that they’re worried about anaesthesia in their elderly pet. What do you say to your clients when they bring this up?
I always tell people our anaesthetic options for pets are much safer than they were years ago. It’s important to work up a patient with appropriate blood work or other necessary tests ahead of time, but many animals, even with underlying conditions, can undergo anaesthesia safely.
You bring up a good point – how about pets with underlying conditions? Should they even have a dentistry done?
At the teaching hospital, we saw a lot of pets with terrible dental disease and concurrent underlying conditions like kidney or heart disease. You have to work them up properly, but the reality is that you can’t leave a pet with a horrible mouth and expect their underlying conditions to improve. I understand that people love their pets, and they worry, but they also don’t want their dog or cat to have a poor quality of life. When I look back, there were only a small handful of cases that I thought presented too great a risk to put under anaesthesia.
You said routine oral exams and cleanings are important, but what can owners do to prevent dental disease?
The gold standard for good dental care in dogs and cats, as in people, is regular teeth brushing. Any owner can learn to do this, but you’ve got to start early in both cats and dogs. It doesn’t mean you can’t start brushing an older pet’s teeth, but it can be harder if you start later in life.
I also encourage people to start getting oral checkups when their pets are kittens and puppies. Just like in children, it’s important that teeth are coming in the way they should be. Missing teeth or unerupted teeth can cause problems later if they are not detected early.
There are certain diets that also are helpful in controlling plaque and calculus (those difficult-to-remove crusty deposits) as well as some treats that can help reduce plaque and tartar. They’re not substitutes for routine dental care, but they can help.
22 www.dogsnsw.org.au
FEATURE
There’s a lot of information online about dental care for cats and dogs. What is the most common misconception you’ve seen or heard from your clients?
I think the idea that anaesthesia is not necessary for a thorough dental evaluation and cleaning is something I hear a lot from clients. Although scaling calculus off the teeth can be cosmetically pleasing, the reality is you simply can’t really get into the area under the gum line and in pockets without general anaesthesia. Unfortunately, I’ve seen lots of patients come in to see me with severe dental disease who’ve had this type of cleaning for years. The owners wonder why their pet’s teeth are falling out when they believe they’ve been providing adequate dental care.
If you could tell our audience one thing, what would it be?
Pets need regular professional dental care. A good oral exam should be part of your pet’s yearly check-up along with routine dental cleanings. When animals become geriatric, sometimes we recommend checking their oral health every six months to stay on top of problems.

Fading Puppy Syndrome
Fading puppy syndrome is a term used to describe puppies that are apparently normal at birth but die within 5-10 days of birth. It can affect a single pup or multiple pups in a litter. Many of these puppies are vigorous and healthy at birth, but lose interest in suckling over time. The bitch is usually in good health, with no known association between this syndrome and dystocia, poor mothering or poor lactation.
Fading puppy syndrome is not a specific diagnosis or disease. The proposed causes for this condition include but are not limited to poor mothering, inadequate lactation, constipation, trauma, congenital abnormalities, low birth weights and infection.
Understanding the vulnerability of a neonate
A newborn puppy is an immature animal that is highly dependent on the bitch for survival in the first few weeks of life. This is due to four main factors:
• Unable to regulate body temperature
A puppy in the first week of life is vulnerable to hypothermia. They rely on the warmth from the bitch to maintain their body temperature. A puppy is not able to shiver to increase its core temperature until 6-8 days of age.
• Prone to dehydration
As 82% of the neonate’s body weight is water and kidney function is immature, the neonate is particularly susceptible to dehydration.
• Risk of hypoglycaemia
Failure to nurse results in a rapid depletion of energy reserves leading to hypoglycaemia by the second day of life.
• Immature immune system
It is important that colostrum (the first milk) is ingested during the first 12-24 hours of life that passively provides the neonate with the antibodies required to fight infection in the first few months of life.
24 www.dogsnsw.org.au VET CHAT
• The Normal Neonate
Observation of a neonate’s behaviour is usually one of the best ways to observe for early signs of fading puppy syndrome. A normal newborn puppy exhibits the following behaviours:
• The eyes open at approximately 2 weeks but eyesight is poor up to 5 weeks of age.
• Puppy should purposefully crawl and search for a teat.
• A normal puppy has a rounded abdomen full of milk, a warm body and elastic skin.
• Spends long periods in deep sleep, interrupted by short periods of body twitching. This behaviour disappears after four weeks.
• Puppies should be able to stand at 3 weeks of age.
Colostrum: passive immunity
Colostrum is the first milk the bitch produces in the few hours after whelping. One of the key functions of colostrum is to pass on maternal antibodies to the neonate to provide immunity against common infections. Colostrum is only absorbed in the first 12 hours of life due to gut closure. Gut closure is where the intestinal wall in the puppy loses the ability to absorb colostrum, and is completely closed at 24 hours after birth.
Royal Canin performed a study on neonatal puppies looking at the levels of antibodies in the blood and association with neonatal death. The study demonstrated that neonatal death in puppies was strongly associated with the quality of the passively acquired immunity (level of antibodies). This emphasises the need to ensure all neonatal puppies receive adequate colostrum intake.
Without appropriate colostrum intake, the risk of infection greatly increases for the neonate.
Images: Shutterstock.com
Treatment & Prevention
There is no reported treatment for fading puppy syndrome. Early supplementary feeding of suspected fading puppies may improve survival. If you suspect a fading puppy, it is best to seek veterinary attention for the puppy.
Prevention is difficult to describe as no specific cause has been identified for fading puppy syndrome. A variety of breeding management systems have been studied with no common management-linked factors associated with neonatal death. There is a tendency for certain dams to have successive fading litters, whilst other bitches experience no problems.
Review of breeding management especially at the time of whelping and through the neonatal period may help to decrease losses.

Coprophagia
Coprophagia describes a condition where a dog may ingest their own faeces, the faeces of another dog or even another animal. Coprophagia is usually more troublesome for pet owners, than it is harmful to the dog. Coprophagia can be a behavioural issue but may also occur with numerous medical problems. Medical problems must be first ruled out before a purely behavioural diagnosis can be made.
Coprophagia can be a normal behaviour especially in nursing bitches to keep the puppies and the den clean. Puppies may also ingest their own faeces, presumably to help establish gut flora. Outside of these two circumstances, coprophagia is not a normal behaviour and may be associated with a poor diet, a medical condition and/or a behavioural issue.
Image: Shutterstock.com
As there can be numerous causes for coprohpagia, it is important to consult your veterinarian. At a minimum your veterinarian may perform a physical and faecal examination on your dog. Faecal examinations are important to assess for parasites but may also provide clues of a digestive issue in your dog (e.g. undigested nutrients such as fats, may be discovered on faecal examination). Any circumstance that alters the way food is digested and how nutrients are absorbed can lead to coprophagia. For example, internal parasites that reside in the bowel interfere with digestion and reduce nutrient absorption. Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and Giardia are parasites frequently found in faecal examinations at kennels where coprophagia is confirmed. If multiple dogs are affected in a kennel environment, mixing faecal samples from several dogs will increase the probability of identifying the parasites involved.
Medical issues relating to the pancreas or gastrointestinal tract can affect the digestion of food and have been associated with coprophagia. Your veterinarian may want to perform further tests to assess their function.
Behavioural problems
Coprophagia has been associated with many behavioural issues including but not limited to attention seeking behaviour, anxiety, lack of enrichment, environmental stress and as a learned behaviour from another dog in the household who is coprophagic.

Feeding habits can play a role too. Heavily restricted food rations in dogs on weight loss programs may result in the consumption of a dog’s own faeces driven by hunger. On the other hand, over eating may also drive coprophagia. A good example is where several dogs are fed at the same time in a kennel environment. The competition at feeding timecan speed up ingestion and in some dogs could result in the overconsumption of food. Too much food eaten quickly can accelerate the movement of food through the bowel, leading to the poor assimilation of nutrients.
Consequently, undigested nutrients can be found in the faeces and may make the faecal matter more palatable to the dog. Stress, related to kennel conditions or an external stressful event (e.g. a thunderstorm) can also initiate this behavioural problem.
What should I do if my dog is coprophagic?
It is imperative that you consult your veterinarian. Medical causes should always be identified and treated. If a medical cause is ruled out, your veterinarian will be able to suggest some behavioural strategies to help and may prescribe products that can be applied to the faeces for example, to help with taste aversion.
The behavioural strategies your veterinarian may suggest could be based around avoiding the opportunity for your dog to ingest faeces, redirecting your dog’s attention or encourage teaching an alternate behaviour altogether. Your veterinarian will be able to advise what will work best for your dog. Ensure you speak to your veterinarian about ways to enrich your dog’s environment to provide more stimulation throughout the day as this can be helpful.
Take home messages
• Coprophagia is only considered a normal behaviour in nursing bitches and young puppies.
• Coprophagia has been associated with medical causes relating to the pancreas and gastrointestinal system (e.g intestinal parasites).
• Numerous behavioural causes exists for coprophagia that are considered possible once a medical cause is ruled out.
• Your veterinarian should always be consulted in the case of coprophagia. They will be able to identify and treat any medical causes and provide appropriate behavioural advice for your dog where necessary.
