SPOTLIGHT

One of the oldest British dog breeds, the Deerhound is built for speed and stamina and although originally bred to run down, catch and kill red deer, the breed was also revered for its courage and tenacity. Deerhounds were also in demand by early Australian settlers as a companion and for hunting much-needed food.

Chairman's REPORT

Congratulations to the Committee of the County of Cumberland Kennel Association for hosting and organising the well supported Anzac Day service and for all those who attended the morning service which was very well presented and attended.

During these challenging times of keeping our DOGS NSW profile ahead, the following aims are initiatives considered by the Board:-

• Increase our profile on all Social Media Platforms

• Involve more young people in our business

• Consider conducting a Fast N Furious Event

• Consider conducting community events to supplement our business by incorporating companion pets into limited events, eg, fun event, obedience and/or fly ball events

• Expand Core Services by putting an innovation bubble into our business.

Members are encouraged to put forward positive suggestions that may add to these areas.

Adding to this, on the weekend of 11 & 12 May, the Public Relations Committee hosted two First Aid & CPR (Canine) Courses which was attended by over forty people over the two days. A thank you to the hard working Committee members who gave up their weekend to cater for this event. A BBQ lunch was incorporated into this educational event.

Our upcoming Dogs On Show event, scheduled for Saturday, 15 June at Orchard Hills, I know will be another well supported event promoting our dogs to the public.

Editor's MESSAGE

Dear Members,

With many of our affiliated smaller breed clubs struggling, one club (and I’m sure others as well) are taking the opportunity to embrace dog sports at their shows to increase attendance as well as their bank balance. The Australian Terrier Club of NSW Inc was one such club who introduced a Trick Dog event alongside their championship show in March to boost attendance. Please turn to page 9 for more details.

Further on the subject of clubs, a well-anticipated event for sporting clubs is the annual Obedience InterClub Team Challenge, held in July. The heart of this competition lies in each participating club nominating teams comprising a mix of novice and highly skilled handlers and dogs, who then compete against other teams. This ensures a diverse range of competitors and creates an atmosphere of camaraderie and support among participants and the clubs. This year’s event is hosted by the 2023 winners, the Illawarra Dog Training Club Inc, who are not only enthusiastic and competitive participants, but are also keen promoters of the event, to ensure they get as many clubs onboard to enjoy the challenge. More about this event and details of this year’s challenge appear on page 24.

The DOGS NSW Show Committee proudly hosted the 2023 Show Dog, Puppy and Neuter Show of the Year at Orchard Hills grounds on Saturday evening, 13 April. There was a panel of six judges who worked in a ballot system to conduct the heats, with all judges officiating for the finals, donning their finest evening wear. Congratulations to the winners! Coverage of the event commences on page 12.

For some show competitors, hydrotherapy is giving their dogs the competitive advantage in the sport and show ring. Sharon Osmond, founder of K9 Swim Hydrotherapy and Wellness Centre in North Richmond, explains how canine competitors can minimise the risk of injury and reduce wear and tear on muscles, joints or bones with hydrotherapy - a type of aqua (water) therapy or ‘controlled swimming’. In an interview with Caroline Zambrano, Sharon describes in detail the many benefits of water therapy and what types are available, not only for canine competitors, but also for injured dogs, those who have had surgery, elderly dogs, or simply for conditioning and fun. The article commences on page 26 and makes interesting reading.

Our spotlight breed this month is the Deerhound. Loyal and dignified with a sweet nature, the Deerhound makes a loving family pet and adores children. They are wonderful dogs for those who have a large, safely fenced area to exercise in and who do not spend long hours away from home on a regular basis, as they love to be with family. The feature commences on page 18.

As the Deerhound has been around since medieval times, it seems appropriate to include another article directly after the spotlight feature, about dogs in the Middle Ages. Emily Savage, of University of St Andrews, writes about the medieval hierarchy of dogs in the Middle Ages based on historical evidence. The feature includes information and images on how dogs were perceived then, their roles and how diverse people’s superstitions and opinions were.

Dogs Australia Canine Grooming Committee

Following discussions with the President of the FCI Grooming Commission, Mr Chua Ming-Kok, the Dogs Australia Board of Directors have resolved that a National Canine Grooming Committee be formed to conduct FCI Grooming Competitions.

Mrs May Wong who is a Dogs Victoria Member/Exhibitor and is currently the organiser of the Canine Grooming Competitions at the Sydney and Melbourne Royals was appointed Chair of the Committee by the Board. May is a professional groomer herself and is highly respected in the sport. The Committee Members will be appointed by the Dogs Australia State and Territory Member Bodies.

In the coming months, the Committee will be formulating Competition Rules and Judges Approval Regulations for consideration by the Dogs Australia Board. In the future, we will be offering a Dogs Australia Groomers Certification Program.

Currently, there are approximately 5,000 canine groomers in Australia. To participate in FCI Competitions a canine groomer must be a member of a Dogs Australia Member Body, the introduction of Canine Grooming will see an increase in our membership. and bring the list of Competitive Sports that we offer to our members to fifteen.

Our Competitive Sports are Agility, Dances with Dogs, Trick Dog, Draft Test, Earthdog Test, Endurance, Flyball, Herding, Lure Coursing, Obedience, Tracking, Retrieving and Field, Scent Work and Sled Sports.

Reinventing your Club

Investing new life into your Club with the introduction of dog sports

Originally formed in 1904, The Australian Terrier Club of NSW Inc held its first Championship Show on 27 January 1957. As for many breed clubs, the years and changing lifestyles have taken their toll and the number of exhibits at our Championship shows has progressively dwindled. This creates the problem of how to continue to allow our members’ dogs a platform on which to shine, whilst maintaining the excellent array of trophies and running costs without sending the Club broke.

This year we decided to try something new.

We organised and ran a Trick Trial in March. What a revelation! Not only was the amazing entry a credit to our judges, but it was a credit to the Club’s bank balance. The Trick Trial was open to all breeds, allowing maximum interest from DOGS NSW members for this fast-growing discipline.

The Trick Trial was only possible with the guidance and assistance of our judges: Joan Stewart, whose knowledge about the process was invaluable; Vicki Etherington OAM, experienced with Trick Trial rules and regulations, and Christiane Diebler, whose assistance combined with Joan’s and Vicki’s on the day, was above and beyond.

The trophy table was groaning with an abundance of goodies including Black Hawk products. Black Hawk kindly sponsored both the Trick Trial and Championship Show for which we were very grateful.

If your Club is looking for a beneficial idea, be sure to investigate the possibility of conducting a Trick Trial alongside your Championship Show. Who knows, it may lift the interest in your breed and your own Club members might be encouraged to teach their dog tricks. Our Club is looking positively at conducting another successful Trick Trial in 2025.

Membership Renewals for 2024/2025

Members are reminded that the 2024/2025 Membership Renewals were emailed on 1st April 2024.

The renewal invoice is for the membership year 1st July 2024 to 30th June 2025.

If you did not receive your renewal email on the 1st of April 2024, please check your SPAM / JUNK folder for the email invoice link. Those Members that don’t have an email address will receive their renewal invoice by post during April.

By renewing your DOGS NSW membership between 1st April and 31st May 2024, you will automatically go into the draw for one of nine (9) membership reimbursements. That is, five (5) DOGS NSW Members who renew in April, and four (4) DOGS NSW Members who renew in May this year, will have their 2024-2025 membership payment fully refunded. Winners will be drawn at the end of each month and announced in the Weekly Woof and contacted by phone.

Are You Missing Out?

You may have seen that DOGS NSW has developed an e-newsletter called the Weekly Woof. This newsletter is sent out on a weekly basis to our members in order to keep them up to date with Operational issues relevant to them. This includes updates on processing times, procedural changes, and news from the President amongst other important information that could pertain to you.

This newsletter is emailed every Friday to our members, if you are not receiving these emails, please contact the Office on (02) 9834 3022 or email info@dogsnsw.org.au and provide your membership number.

Distinguished Service and Life Membership Awards

These awards exist to recognise the valuable contribution of individuals to the current and future existence of the organisation. In particular, the Awards System, described below, is intended to recognise a wide range of factors, more than simply by being a long-term Member. It also seeks to create awards so that significant contributions to DOGS NSW may be recognised appropriately.

The two Awards available to Members are:

1. Distinguished Service Award

2. Honorary Life Membership

The award of Life Membership is the highest honour that DOGS NSW can bestow on an individual. It is conferred on those who have made an exceptional contribution to the existence and advancement of the organisation. The aim is to make life membership hard to obtain so that it is respected by members and valued by recipients

PROCEDURE

Members wishing to nominate a fellow Member for either Award may apply to the Office for the appropriate Nomination Form.

Each form must be completed by two Members, in good standing and lodged with the Office prior to the advertised closing date for nominations.

All nominations are to be treated in the strictest confidence.

Nominations will be referred to the Honours Working Party for due consideration to be followed by the Working Party’s recommendations to the Board of Directors.

AWARD CRITERIA

1. Distinguished Service Award

The Nominee is to be a continuous financial member of DOGS NSW for a minimum period of 15 years.

The Nominee must have served the dog world in an effective and meaningful way; such as Member of an Affiliate, a Committee Member, a Steward, an Event Organiser and any of the other many contributing roles which require a considerable degree of personal endeavour, involvement and dedication.

2. Honorary Life Membership

The Nominee is to be a continuous financial member of DOGS NSW for a minimum period of 25 years.

The Nominee must have demonstrated significant, sustained and high quality service enhancing the reputation and future of the overall organisation particularly to the administration, development and promotion of the canine world.

Exceptional Criteria

Should a member lack the membership precondition, but it can be demonstrated that the member has provided outstanding and meritorious services to DOGS NSW, then a nomination may well be warranted.

NOTE:

The members of the Honours Working Party are of the view that should a nomination not be successful, further nominations for that nominee should not be considered for a minimum period of three years.

TIMETABLE - NOMINATION FOR ELECTIONS

BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2024

At the 2024 Annual General Meeting of RNSWCC Ltd, five (5) members of the Board of Directors will retire by rotation pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution of RNSWCC Ltd. Accordingly, the Board has resolved to call for nominations to fill the said vacancies.

The successful nominees shall each be elected for a term commencing at the conclusion of the 2024 Annual General Meeting of RNSWCC Ltd and expiring at the conclusion of the first Annual General Meeting held more than 30 months thereafter.

These five (5) positions are to be elected from the following Regions:-

One (1) representatives from the Metropolitan Region

One (1) representative from the Hunter Region

One (1) representative from the Illawarra & South Eastern Region

One (1) representative from the Northern Region

One (1) representative from the Southern Region

Retiring Directors are eligible to nominate for these positions provided that they continue to comply with the requirements set out in the following paragraph.

Members seeking election will be required to reside in the Region for which they seek to represent and will also be required to be full financial members of RNSWCC Ltd. It will be necessary to be nominated by two (2) full financial members of RNSWCC Ltd who also must reside in the same Region.

Each full financial member of RNSWCC Ltd will be eligible to vote for the candidate/s in the Region in which they reside. Please Note: Associate, Junior Members and Affiliates of RNSWCC Ltd are not entitled to vote.

• Age Limitation: The test is open to dogs who have attained their second birthday on or before 11 August 2024 but who have not turned eight as at 11 August 2024.

• Pre-requisite: A veterinarian certificate, issued within 14 days immediately prior to 11 August 2024, must be submitted on the day for each dog. It shall cover such things as general fitness, temperature, standing heart rate, conditions of pads and muscle tone of dog (for bitches the certificate is also to state that the bitch is not in whelp).

• The handler must be at least twelve (12) years old at 11 August 2024.

• Helmets MUST be worn if riding a bicycle.

• Dogs will not be permitted to have their temperature lowered artificially, unless directed by a Veterinarian, and that dog will then be disqualified.

• Gates will be locked at 7.00am and will not be re-opened until after the conclusion of the test. NO access to grounds until the test is concluded.

• Handlers may jog the distance, ride a push bicycle or tricycle or one powered by battery, provided the required speed is maintained. USE OF ANY OTHER MOTORISED MECHANICAL VEHICLE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED The handler when riding must wear enclosed shoes and a helmet.

• Non competing dogs must be secured in a vehicle, dog trailer or crate while gaiting and obedience is being conducted

• Non competing dogs MUST NOT cause a distraction to competing dogs.

Deerhound

History

The Deerhound, the Royal Dog of Scotland, has been bred in the Highlands and Western Isles of Scotland since time immemorial. It is undoubtedly true that it is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, British breeds of dog. Bred to run down, catch and kill red deer, the Deerhound is built for speed and stamina. Revered for his courage and tenacity as a stag hunter, it was not until the introduction of improved firearms that their skills were no longer in great demand.

Deerhounds have been in Australia since early colonial times and played an important part in the development of this country. Certainly, there is mention of Deerhounds in records as early as 1860 and they are depicted in our emerging colonial art.

In the early days, they were in demand as a companion and for hunting kangaroos as a source of much-needed food for settlers. Later, as pastoralists moved further west, they were used for killing dingoes and foxes that preyed upon the sheep flocks. Frequently, they were used as station sires and the Kangaroo Dog developed. Wealthy squatters even established their own deer parks.

Appearance

Deerhounds are part of the sighthound family and in appearance should resemble a greyhound of larger size and bone. Their rough, wiry coat comes in various shades of grey. It is easily managed and does not readily harbour dirt. Size is desirable in this breed and a Deerhound should be as tall as possible, consistent with quality.

Height should be not less than 76cm (30”) at the shoulder for males, and 71cm (28”) for females. Dogs should weigh 39-48kg, bitches 30-37kg.

Temperament

The Deerhound is loyal, dignified and adores children. They are sweet, tractable, lazy dogs, not excelling in obedience work. They like to be close to their family and will feel rejected if banished outside. If a Deerhound is to be an outdoor dog, it needs to be provided with a draught-free kennel, not too far from the house. They are busy as a puppy and prone to long naps as an adult. Some Deerhounds can be extremely sensitive and need almost no disciplining, whereas others try your patience to the limit.

Please note: if a Deerhound is not given infinite companionship and direction as a youngster, it can develop into a headstrong, boisterous and unruly adult.

Health

Deerhounds are basically a healthy breed. Apart from bloat and cardiomyopathy that are common to all deep-chested, giant breeds, there are few health issues. Deerhounds can live to be 9 or 10 years old, sometimes more. They are long-lived for a giant breed, the females tending to live longer than the males.

Suitability

Deerhounds are wonderful dogs for those who have a large, safely fenced area to exercise in and who do not spend long hours away from home on a regular basis. Adults enjoy as much exercise as you can give them. A young puppy will exercise sufficiently just playing with the family, itself or other dogs each day. They are probably not going to bring back the stick that you throw and most likely will not bark and growl when someone approaches your front door. That nice roast you put on the kitchen counter to defrost is an open invitation for a Deerhound to snack.

A Deerhound should live happily with other household pets. However, since they were bred to chase and catch game, the sight of a small animal running by may trigger a response. Your Deerhound may share companionship with your indoor cat, but may change its attitude outside when a cat, even its indoor cat, runs past. Most owners report their Deerhounds and other pets get along just fine, but it is best to use caution to prevent any “chasing mishaps”.

Owners need to accommodate a Deerhound’s size and need for exercise, quality food and good health care. In return you will have a faithful companion, who will reward you with love and devotion throughout its life. Those who share their lives with Deerhounds wonder why they are not more popular, but the Deerhound is really not for everyone.

Dogs in the Middle Ages

What medieval writing tells us about our ancestors’ pets

Dogs were companions to humans long before written history, but being a guardian and a hunting partner is quite different to being a pet. In the Middle Ages, they were not usually pets as they are today; indeed there is no record of the word ‘pet’ before the 16th century. Nonetheless, many medieval dog owners were no less affectionate and indulgent of their dogs than modern owners.

Author Emily Savage, Associate Lecturer in the School of History, St Andrews Institute of Medieval History, University of St Andrews writes about the medieval hierarchy of dogs in the Middle Ages, based on historical evidence.

In the Middle Ages, most dogs had jobs. In his book De Canibus, the 16th-century English physician and scholar John Caius described a hierarchy of dogs, which he classified first and foremost according to their function in human society.

At its apex were specialised hunting dogs, including greyhounds, known for their “incredible swiftnesse” and bloodhounds, whose powerful sense of smell drove them “through long lanes, crooked reaches, and weary ways” in pursuit of their prey. But even the “mungrells” that occupied the bottom rungs of the canine social ladder were characterised in terms of their labour or status; for example, as street performers, or turnspits in kitchens – running on wheels that turned roasting meat.

The place of dogs in society changed when hunting became an aristocratic pastime, rather than a necessity. Simultaneously, dogs were welcomed inside noble homes, especially by women. In both cases, dogs were signifiers of elite social rank. Indeed, in his ranking, Caius positions the “delicate, neate, and pretty” indoor dogs below hunting dogs but above base mongrels, because of their association with the noble classes. As for puppies: “the smaller they be, the more pleasure they provoke”.

Although the church formally disapproved of pets, clerics themselves often owned dogs. Like women, clerics’ dogs were generally lapdogs, ideally suited to their indoor pursuits.

In praise of dogs

Not everyone had such affection for dogs. Concerned about potential violence, urban authorities in England regulated the keeping of guard dogs, as well as violent popular entertainments, such as boar, bear and bull-baiting.

In the Bible, dogs are often characterised as filthy scavengers. On the other hand, the story of St Roch in The Golden Legend, a popular 13th century collection of saints’ lives, tells of a dog who carried bread to a starving saint, then healed his wounds by licking them. One of Roch’s saintly attributes, a motif by which viewers can recognise him, is a devoted dog.

The trope of dogs defending their owners or lamenting dead ones can be traced back to the classical period, to texts like Pliny the Elder’s Natural History. This theme is repeated in the medieval bestiary tradition, a moralising compendium of knowledge about animals both real and mythical. One common story tells of the legendary King Garamantes who, when captured by his enemies, is tracked down and rescued by his faithful dogs. The tale of one greyhound, Guinefort, even inspired an unofficial saint’s cult. Writing in the 13th century, Dominican inquisitor and preacher Stephen of Bourbon described a noble family who, falsely believing the dog to have killed their infant, killed Guinefort in retribution. Upon discovering the child unharmed (the dog had really saved it from a venomous snake),

they honoured the “martyred” canine with a proper burial, which led to its veneration and alleged healing miracles. Although Stephen’s story intended to reveal the sin and folly of superstition, it nonetheless underlines what medieval people perceived as the special qualities that distinguished dogs from other animals.

According to the Aberdeen Bestiary (c. 1200): “No creature is more intelligent than the dog, for dogs have more understanding than other animals; they alone recognise their names and love their masters.”

The association between dogs and loyalty is also expressed in the art of the period, including in relation to marriage. In tomb monuments, depictions of dogs indicate the fidelity of a wife to the husband who lies beside her.

In the case of clerical tombs, however, they may suggest the faith of the deceased, such as Archbishop William Courtenay (d. 1396), buried in Trinity Chapel, Canterbury Cathedral. Courtenay’s alabaster effigy reposes atop a tomb chest on the south side of the chapel. The archbishop wears the robes and mitre of his office, and two angels support his cushioned head. Although it’s tempting to wonder whether the dog depicted on Courtenay’s tomb may represent an actual pet owned by the archbishop, the belled collar was a popular convention of contemporary iconography, especially for lapdogs.

Pampered Pooches

Like their modern counterparts, medieval dog owners with means kitted out their companions with a variety of accessories, including leashes, coats and cushions made from fine materials. Such material investment was central to the aristocratic culture of vivre noblement (the art of living nobly), where the deliberate consumption of luxury commodities publicly demonstrated one’s status.

Popular perceptions of dog owning and accessorising also fed gendered stereotypes. Whereas men were more likely to own active dogs for the protection of their life and property, women preferred lapdogs they could cradle and pamper. Toy dogs, then, could also be associated with female idleness and vice, as seen in Hans Memling’s painting Allegory of Vanity (c. 1485).

But even working dogs needed meticulous care and attention if they were to perform at their best. The Obedience Interclub Teams Challenge Event

Have you heard about the Obedience Interclub Challenge?

When some very enthusiastic trialers who are relatively new to the scene, started asking about this event, we found out that it was a very prestigious award to win and a fun event in which to compete. As the level of competition involved with the Obedience Interclub Challenge is fierce, it is a well-anticipated, annual event for clubs.

Like many of our beloved dog sports, numbers have dropped and participation levels are much lower than in previous years. However, this year we want to revive this annual event and we would love the participation of clubs. In the background, in the lead-up to this event, we have a great line-up of sponsors willing to help celebrate this event.

History of the Interclub Challenge

The competition was started in 1995 by Breed/Obedience Clubs that were interested in obedience, like Hills Dog Club Inc, Blacktown Dog Training Club, The Dobermann Club of NSW Inc and The Labrador Retriever Club of NSW Inc.

In the early days, only purebred dogs were allowed to compete. It was much later that non-purebred dogs were accepted for competition as well and this is when this event became very popular.

Blacktown Dog Training Club donated the first perpetual trophy which is still used today. The winning club can place a small plaque on the trophy to commemorate their win, with the winning team to hold the event the following year. The first club to win this event, as per the record on the perpetual trophy, was the The Dobermann Club of NSW Inc.

The Interclub Teams Event has been running since 1995 except when the competition was stopped due to Covid-19 and heavy rain.

What are the team requirements?

A club can enter more than one team and the results are based on a scoring system. Each team consists of six (6) dogs and handlers from the following classes: 1 x Utility 2x Open 1x Novice 1x CCD 1x Rally Novice

If a team is short a dog/handler you can forgo the points and still compete for a great day out. We would hate for you to miss out.

How did the Illawarra come to hold the Interclub Challenge this year?

The 2023 Interclub Obedience Teams Events was held at the Hills Dog Club (who won the event in 2022) at Castle Hill grounds. Last July, the event was won by the Illawarra Dog Training Club (IDTC) Inc members, and they are still celebrating their success and looking forward to hosting the event this year.

The IDTC nominated two teams for this 2023 event and were very happy with their success when their two teams placed first and second overall.

The Illawarra Dog Training Club will be holding their Annual Obedience Trial on 7 July 2024 at their grounds at J.J. Kelly Park, Swan Street, Wollongong and will also be hosting the Obedience Interclub teams event challenge at the same grounds on Saturday 27 July 2024.

The Members of the IDTC are looking forward with enthusiasm to a lot of entries for both events. The sponsorship prize pool is in excess of $6500.00 with the major sponsor being Meals for Mutts (MFM) who have generously donated 24 bags of dog food for the winning teams. The Interclub Challenge: A Day of Canine Excellence & Team Spirit

On Saturday, July 2023, the Hills Dog Club hosted the highly anticpated yearly Interclub Challenge which, after a three year break, drew participants from 15 Clubs across NSW.

The heart of an Inter-Club Competition lies in each club nominating teams comprising a mix of novice and highly skilled handlers and dogs, who then compete against other teams. This ensures a diverse range of competitors and creates an atmosphere of camaraderie and support among participants and the clubs. The teamwork aspect, where teams score points collectively to reach the top, heightens the excitement and engagement of everyone involved. The team-oriented structure of the Competition fosters a strong sense of community, resulting in an enthusiastic turnout at the prize-giving ceremony and creating a truly festive atmosphere.

The top three teams from the Illawarra Dog Training Club Inc and the Hills Dog Club gave exceptional performances and earned them all well-deserved recognition. Their achievements exemplify the spirit of competition, sportsmanship and dedication to canine excellence that the Inter-Club Competition embodies.

Get the edge over your competition with Hydrotherapy

Dogs competing in shows, agility, obedience or other trials and events need to be in peak physical and mental condition to ensure they perform at their best while prioritising their overall wellbeing.

To maximise performance and increase the chances of success, handlers combine various strategies and techniques with dedication, patience and a deep understanding of their dog’s abilities and needs.

For some competitors, hydrotherapy is giving their dogs a competitive advantage in the sport and show ring. Brooke Turner is an award-winning DOGS NSW breeder and handler of Bullmastiffs and Rottweilers since the age of 12, and she knows what it takes to prepare dogs for competition.

“Dogs competing in the show ring need to be fit for function, sound and have a good level of fitness and endurance,” she said. “This allows them to move around the ring multiple times in all weather conditions. They also need to be well-muscled and not overweight and sloppy.”

President of the Hills Dog Club, Carole Hately has been involved in Dogs Australia sports and showing for seven years. She competes with her Border Collies in Conformation, Rally, Tricks, Obedience, Scentwork and Endurance, and has achieved many awards.

“Keeping my dogs mentally and physically fit is important for them to perform at their best and minimise the risk of injury,” she said.

As with human athletes, injuries and wear and tear are common in competition dogs with some needing orthopaedic surgery followed by months of rehabilitation.

The good news is, canine competitors can minimise the risk of injury and reduce wear and tear on muscles, joints or bones with hydrotherapy, a type of aqua (water) therapy or ‘controlled swimming’, said Sharon Osmond, founder of K9 Swim Hydrotherapy and Wellness Centre in North Richmond.

“High performance can lead to cruciate ligament issues, strains in ligaments, soft tissue and muscles, sprains, bruising, lack of stamina, lack of lean muscle and skeletal injuries.”

Ms Osmond founded K9 Swim Hydrotherapy and Wellness Centre in 2013 and is today the only one of its kind in Australasia offering a purposely built facility focusing on rehabilitation.

She is a member of ACRA (Australian Canine Rehabilitation Association) and has numerous qualifications in veterinary nursing and animal rehabilitation. She received a scholarship with the Veterinary Nurses Council of Australia (VNCA)’s Professional Development program and went on to study at the renowned Greyfriars Veterinary Rehabilitation and Hydrotherapy Referral Centre in the UK.

The most common health condition Ms Osmond sees in competition dogs is wear and tear. “Repetitive jumping, landings, running and stopping can also lead to concussion injuries throughout the joints. Hydrotherapy accelerates results without that jarring effect that is found in land-based exercising.”

“Health issues in show dogs can be lack of muscle tone, gait or conformation abnormalities, stress and anxiety,” said Ms Osmond.

“Hydrotherapy can assist in the reduction of pain, stiffness, inflammation and swelling in dogs that have had injuries and can reduce the risk of injury. Plus, it helps with mental stimulation!” she added.

“Dogs more at risk of health issues are those with a high drive, as they are on the go and exceptionally active. Dogs that are less conditioned, less muscled, have low stamina and energy levels can also be subjected to more injuries than a well-conditioned/muscled dog.”

How is hydrotherapy beneficial to competition dogs?

Hydrotherapy is a non-weight bearing exercise that exercises the muscles and joints without the jarring effects of hard surfaces. “It is a wonderful cardiovascular exercise that strengthens the heart and lungs and builds better stamina, endurance and strength,” said Ms Osmond.

“Incorporating hydrotherapy in the competition dogs’ conditioning program and regular exercising will target and build muscles where needed. It can assist in correcting gait abnormalities and improves better range of motion, core strength, balance, coordination and proprioception.

“This kind of conditioning can give the competition dog an optimal level of performance. It will help to minimise and guard against injuries in the canine athlete and will help with reaching their full athletic potential. Keeping your competition dog in peak condition will help decrease recovery time from injuries, improve overall health and fitness and will give them longevity.”

Hydrotherapy is also a great way to condition dogs for the show ring, improving health and physical well-being.

“It improves the top line, builds well-defined muscle tone, it can correct and improve gait abnormalities, gives a better range of motion, assists in balance, proprioception and co-ordination, and gives great core strength,” explained Ms Osmond.

“Hydrotherapy builds stamina and strength as it conditions the cardiovascular system. Well-conditioned show dogs will look and feel better and will have better performance in the show ring.”

Ms Turner discovered canine hydrotherapy over 10 years ago and has since been taking her show dogs to K9 Swim on a weekly basis!

“Water resistance training is fantastic for the dogs’ overall wellbeing and endurance,” she said. “Its low weight-bearing on joints and allows our dogs to get the best and most out of their exercise in a short period of time. Our dogs have amazing fitness and endurance as well as being well muscled.”

Ms Hately is also a big fan of hydrotherapy after seeing the benefits in all her dogs.

“Hydrotherapy gives dogs an aerobic workout without weight bearing, and helps to build muscle and evenness in gaiting,” she said. “It’s also great for dogs recovering from injury and to maintain those dogs as they age to maintain their health.”

Originally, Ms Hately started hydrotherapy with her old dog, who is now 14 and attends K9 Swim weekly. “She has lost weight and built muscle which has aided her as she has aged to remain fit and healthy. However, the benefits fitness-wise quickly shone through and now I am there twice a week with multiple dogs!” said Ms Hately.

Nearly two years ago, Ms Hately’s 7-year-old Border Collie injured her cruciate ligament and had hydrotherapy rehabilitation treatment six weeks prior to surgery, which she said helped her dog through the recovery period physically and mentally.

“After surgery we continued with the assisted swimming to promote muscle building and regain her health both aerobically and physically,” said Ms Hately. Ms Hately has also regularly taken her youngest Border Collie to hydrotherapy as part of her training for the Sydney Royal last year.

“The swimming helped my dog build muscle and gait better,” she said. “Also, I was training a dog for the endurance trial last year and we did extra swimming to aid in the training. It’s not weight-bearing and a great fun, physical workout for the dogs!”

Hydrotherapy in the pool or treadmill?

Using the pool or underwater treadmill for hydrotherapy depends on various factors such as the size of the dog, its temperament and reason for referral.

“Many of the competition and show dogs do cross-training, so they will swim in the pool one day and water treadmill another day,” said Ms Osmond.

“It all depends on what they are targeting to achieve. If they are wanting to correct and improve their gait, we will normally put them on the underwater treadmill. If we want a better cardiovascular system, we will swim them.”

Also, flexion is better in the pool and extension is better in the underwater treadmill. The pool is totally non-weight -bearing, where the water treadmill achieves 60-70% weightless exercise without changing normal movement/gait patterns.

“The pool is great for core strengthening and the underwater treadmill builds muscle a little faster due to the weight bearing with resistance training in the water,” she added. “We have the luxury of having both the indoor heated pool and the underwater treadmill, so we can target all conditions and cater for the needs of all our dogs that come to us.”

How to start Hydrotherapy

For dogs in rehabilitation, a veterinary referral form needs to be completed by a veterinarian and given to K9 Swim Hydrotherapy and Wellness Centre before treatment commences. This will assist the hydrotherapist in the dog’s rehabilitation process.

A vet referral is NOT needed if the dog is coming for fitness, toning and conditioning and has had no recent injuries or surgeries.

Water can be very calming for dogs and can reduce levels of stress in addition to assisting with improving many bodily functions. Dogs also do not have to have a medical condition to swim – they can do it for fun!

DISPUTES

From time to time, members refer to DOGS NSW matters in which it is not appropriate for our organisation to become involved. For example, disputes between members in relation to the sale of dogs. These are usually private matters to be determined by the contractual agreements between parties. Disputes on such matters should be resolved by the courts and not by DOGS NSW.

Members are requested to refrain from referring such matters to DOGS NSW. They are issues of a private or domestic nature and should properly be resolved by the courts or the Department of Fair Trading.
