The Great Cattle Dog Muster was held on Saturday and Sunday 9-10 September, a spectacular festival event staged in the picturesque Upper Hunter NSW - the Birthplace of the Cattle Dog. It was a family, fun event celebrating all things Australian Cattle Dog. This year, the Muster, in collaboration with DOGS NSW, invited both the Australian Cattle Dog Society of NSW Inc as well as The Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog Club of NSW to hold their Championship Dog Shows at the event, which was greatly accepted and drew an impressive entry of 371 from across the nation on both days. Director Glen Vernon professionally co-ordinated the dog events over the weekend, which resulted in the floorless running of the two championship shows for Australian Cattle Dogs and Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs, Sweepstakes, Rally, Obedience Trials, a Scent Work Demonstration, Trick Dog, Handler Classes, Breeder Team, Parent & Offspring and Property Classes. DOGS NSW was well represented with the Chair of the Public Relations Committee, Director Angus McIlrath attending over the weekend and promoting DOGS NSW and the many sporting activities with which people and their dogs can enjoy. Congratulations to all who assisted to make this a wonderful celebration of the Australian Cattle Dog and Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog. The 2023 DOGS NSW State Retrieving Trial Championship took place in the Hunter Valley on 12- 13 August with 21 Gundogs participating. The event drew supporters from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia. A BIG congratulations to the winner of first place, Labrador Retriever GR. R.T. CH. NATIVERUN ANGUS CM. and Ray Ashenden. The Pet Show in Sydney is scheduled for 18 - 19 November and, looking at the program guide, it is shaping up to be a wonderful and informative, family, fun day out, featuring lots of information and education about your chosen pet. DOGS NSW will have a presence supported by affiliated breed clubs, Agility, Scent Work and Trick Dog demonstrations. DOGS NSW will once again host the “Ask the Breeder” talks at the event with 18 different breed talks on for each day as well as a “Choosing the Dog” talk. This will be The Pet Show’s second year in Sydney at Sydney Olympic Park and we hope will be bigger and even better than the last. Thank you to all those who have committed to assisting in bringing the promotion and support of Pedigree dogs to the fore.

The Great Cattle Dog Muster welcomed its second year at Muswellbrook in September. The dog events were coordinated by the appointed administrator and DOGS NSW Director, Glen Vernon, so it was only fitting that Glen wrote the coverage of the event, ably assisted with great photos from Rosemary Richards, Ffiona Erskine and Janet Williams. The Muster was again a great success, with people coming from far and wide to attend the weekend and, of course, soak in the atmosphere of anything Cattle Dog! Coverage commences on page 10. The 2023 DOGS NSW State Retrieving Trial Championship was held on Saturday and Sunday 12- 13 August in the Hunter Valley at the beautiful grounds of Tocal Agricultural Centre. Competitors, volunteers and supporters came from NSW, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia, with Tasmanian Paul Littlejohn as the judge. The Friday before the weekend, saw quite a social occasion before the Championship event. Coverage of the event commences on page 22 from Trial Manager Sandra Hodges and photographer Karla Lemmert. The spotlight feature this month is the noble and elegant Dobermann. The tax collector is never a welcome visitor and in certain precincts of 19th-century Germany, the reception was downright hostile. All too aware of this was taxman and dog breeder Louis Dobermann, from the town of Apolda. He hoped to breed an imposing but dependable protector to accompany him on his rounds and the ‘Tax Collector’s Dog’ quickly gained an international reputation as a working dog supreme. Dobermanns have excelled at police and military K-9 duty, as therapy dogs and service dogs for the disabled, as searchers and rescuers and in competitive dog sports. Possessing a sleek and powerful physique, this breed has a reputation for being fearless, vigilant and devoted to family and is proudly among the world’s finest protection dogs, making it a trustworthy and loyal companion. It is affectionate with family and has a keen intelligence, making it a quick learner. The winner of September’s competition, to win a ‘Junior Fun Pack’ was Amy Hopkins. Congratulations Amy!

Everyone celebrated all things Australian Cattle Dog and Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog. The atmosphere was amazing and festival-like. This year we invited both the Australian Cattle Dog Society of NSW and the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog Club of NSW to hold their championship shows in conjunction with the Great Cattle Dog Muster and they accepted with open arms. Many thanks to Sue Ford and Bernadette Merchant for working with me and for making this event even greater! On a p ers o nal no te , I a m s u p e r p r o u d o f all our pe ople . E ve ryone working/pulling together to make this event so successful. With our sport on display to the world, DOGS NSW members did us proud.

Dog Sports Again, this year’s Dog Sports took centre stage, with an entry of over 40 competing for the awards in the dog sports arena. The competitors were restricted to Australian working breeds and the events included Obedience, Rally, Trick Dog and a Scent Work demonstration conducted by Tracie Donnelly. Many thanks to our Judges Joan Stewart and Vicki Etherington OAM. The championship arena this year outperformed our expectations with combined entries over the two days of 371. Our Judges were Diana Norman, Deirdre Crofts, Shannon Lancaster and John Sheppard. A huge thank you to all for the support and energy adding to the wonderful festival atmosphere.

Dobermann

History

The Dobermann is comparatively modern and unusual in that one man is credited with its origin in the 1880s, Louis Dobermann. A nightwatchman and tax collector, he bred a large terrier-type dog that would be utterly fearless, highly intelligent and a first-class personal guard dog. By the end of the 19th century, Otto Goeller took the rough breed and improved it enormously, retaining its alertness and exceptional qualities as a guard dog, while at the same time softening the breed so that it became a good house dog.

Appearance The Dobermann is a muscular, medium-sized, strong dog capable of great speed and agility. Elegant with a proud and noble carriage, the Dobermann is energetic, determined, fearless, loyal and obedient. Males measure 69cm at the withers and weigh up to 40kg, whereas females are 65cm in height and weigh up to 35kg. The Dobermann is bred in four colours, with the most common being black with rust-red markings, followed by a good proportion of brown and rust markings. The blue and fawn Dobermann rarely occurs in Australia.

Temperament Though the breed is physically strong, the Dobermann is not a bully and often lives in harmony with other breeds of dog, as well as cats. There is nothing mean about its character and the Dobermann’s devotion and natural protective instinct make it an ideal companion and trustworthy member of the family. Intelligent and a quick learner, the breed excels at a variety of activities, including Obedience, Tracking, Agility, rescue and police work, as well as showing capabilities as guide or therapy dogs.

Health

The breed is generally sound and healthy, with a life expectancy of 10-12 years and many living longer. The Dobermann Club of NSW encourages breeder members to test their breeding stock; it is important to purchase your Dobermann from a breeder with a rigorous testing program. Hereditary problems in the breed are Cervical Vertebral Instability (CVI), commonly called ‘Wobblers’, Cardiomyopathy, Hypothyroidism and von Willebrands Disease (vWD). The breed has a small incidence of Hip and Elbow Dysplasia and it can be prone to gastric bloat and cancer.

Maintenance

The Dobermann is easy to care for with its short, smooth coat only requiring the occasional bath and weekly attention to ears, nails and callouses. Regular grooming will keep its coat healthy and shining.

Suitability

The Dobermann is a highly energetic youngster and quite active adult. It thrives on interaction with its family and does not do well if left in the backyard for long periods of time. Like all dogs, any time spent with children should always be under adult supervision. An intelligent breed, the Dobermann needs the stimulation of being challenged both mentally and physically to achieve its full potential. Being an active dog, daily walks are highly recommended. New study reveals the smartest dog breed in the world Story by Louise Allingham For Daily Mail Australia

Research has revealed which dog breed is the smartest and two of Australia’s most beloved dog breeds scored surprisingly low. The Border Collie has long been thought of as the smartest dog in the world but a recent study from the University of Helsinki in Finland found it is actually the Belgian Shepherd Malinois. More than 1,000 dogs from 13 different breeds were put through rigorous intelligence testing with the Labrador coming in ninth and the Golden Retriever taking last place. Study author Dr Katriina Tiira told The Telegraph one breed stood out among the rest throughout the testing. ‘The Belgian Shepherd Malinois stood out in many of the cognitive tasks, having very good results in a majority of the tests,’ she said. Top four smartest dog breeds: 1. Belgian Shepherd Malinois 2. Border Collie 3. Hovawart (FCI recognised breed) 4. Spanish Water Dog Belgian Malinois are popular choices for those looking for a canine to make a good sniffer, guard or police dog but they proved themselves to also be independent, good problem solvers, qu ick t o resp o nd t o a n d g o o d a t reading humans. Border Collies proved their smarts and performed outstandingly in the tests but the Belgian Shepherd Malinois pipped them at the post. Saara Junttila, study author and a PhD researcher in canine cognition at the University of Helsinki, said most breeds studied had their own strengths and weaknesses. ‘For example, the Labrador Retriever was very good at reading human gestures, but not so good at spatial problemsolving ability,’ she said. Border Collies proved their smarts and performed outstandingly in the study’s intelligence tests but the Belgian Shepherd Malinois pipped them at the post. ‘Some breeds, such as the Shetland Sheepdog, scored quite evenly in almost all tests; i.e., they had neither very high nor very low scores for any test.’ One of the dogs’ tasks in which they were presented with two food bowls, one full and one empty, to see if they could identify that was empty yielded no results as there was no difference in behaviour between each breed. However, three tasks which measured a specific aspect of dog cognition were more telling including one where the subjects had to navigate their way around a V-shaped fence. Another presented the animals an ‘unsolvable task’ - food placed in a box that couldn’t be opened - to see how quickly they would seek a human for help, determining how independent they were. The third measured how the dogs were able to read humans, rating how they responded to five gestures: constant pointing, brief pointing, pointing with the foot, pointing at something while facing another direction and following a gaze. 2023 DOGS NSW State Retrieving Championships

12-13 August 2023

The 2023 DOGS NSW State Retrieving Trial Championship was held in the Hunter Valley on the beautiful grounds of Tocal Agricultural Centre on the 12th and 13th of August. On Friday 11 August 2023, competitors, volunteers and supporters from NSW, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia came together for a social event. Sponsored by Air&Go Australia, the evening culminated in a draw to decide the running order of the 21 gundogs entered in the Championship. The first day of the competition kicked off with a BBQ breakfast at the trial site. The Hunter Valley turned on its most spectacular weather and the property provided plenty of opportunities for the judge, Paul Littlejohn from Tasmania, to set a variety of challenging runs. On Saturday the runs consisted primarily of landmarks where the dogs were tested for steadiness and game-finding ability. The dogs performed to a high standard, although several dogs were unsuccessful in proceeding to the second day of the trial. Sunday saw a testing day of hunting-style runs that focused on the dogs’ ability to work in water. A combination of marks and blinds, as well as several concepts, were tested in overcast and raining conditions. Ultimately, eight dogs proceeded to the last run of the trial with seven dogs being successful in completing the trial. The presentation was held on the trial site with a huge selection of prizes and raffles on offer thanks to Orivet, Eukanuba, Sporting Outback Supplies, the Patterson family and Air&Go Australia. The event was well supported by a wonderful team of stewards and committee members. Congratulations to the following finishers: 1st Place: 2nd Place:
