Chairman's Report

Dear Members,

August was certainly a very active month for DOGS NSW, its Affiliates and members. Post-COVID activities are normalising and our expectations are that the public’s demand for pedigree dogs shall soon also normalise.

It was great to see the DOGS NSW Endurance Test go ahead on 13 August, after a long break due to COVID-19 and ground flooding. Participation in this Test certainly requires a lot of commitment and training, so a very big congratulations to all those who were successful.

On Saturday and Sunday 26-27 August, the Sydney Dog Lovers Festival was attended by tens of thousands of the pet-loving residents of Sydney and, for the first time ever, the event also included the Cat Lovers Festival. Thank you to the nineteen Affiliated Breed Clubs who attended and manned breed stands and to those who gave breeder talks on the “Ask the Breeder Stage”. Also, a big thank you to the Agility Dog Club of NSW Inc, for its fabulous Agility demonstrations. Last, but certainly not least, a big thank you goes to the dedicated team of five Public Relations Committee members and thirteen voluntary members, with their enviable knowledge base of information on our array of pedigree breeds and sporting activities who manned the DOGS NSW combined Information and Sports Stand.

Congratulations to Jorja Baxter who will represent NSW in the National Final in Perth, Western Australia, this month after being declared the overall winner of the 2023 State Junior Handlers Titles. Jorga now will compete to be appointed the Australian entrant at Crufts in 2024! Also, a big congratulations to the Runner-up, Charlotte Manton.

The DOGS NSW Obedience & Tracking Committee will be hosting the 2023 NSW Obedience State Titles on Monday, 2 October at the German Shepherd Dog League grounds at The Bill Spilstead Complex for Canine Affairs. The following classes on offer to be judged are: UDX, UD, Open, Novice, CCD, Rally Master, Rally Excellent, Rally Advanced, Rally Novice, RATG: Novice and Open.

On 8, 22 & 23 October, the DOGS NSW Judges CJEP Examinations Committee will hold the practical examinations, which will bring the current Conformation Judges Education Program to its conclusion. We wish those Trainees all the best for their practical examination, with high expectations of a new group of highly trained and competent Judges to be available for Show Secretaries to draw on in their efforts to put together an expert judging panel. I would encourage members to respond to the call out for assistants on the day and support the co-ordinators in their efforts to put together the classes of dogs to run the examinations.

Congratulations to the Spring Fair Dog Show Committee for running another extremely successful Spring Fair with great entries across Conformation, Agility, Obedience, Herding and Lure Coursing. Plus, a big thank you to our major sponsors, Royal Canin and Plush Puppy.

The remediation works to the GSDL rings are planned for this October. This will involve the supply and spread of topsoil with purpose-built top-dresser and 152 tonnes of 80/20 sand soil mix. The levelling works will be undertaken multiple times at intervals until the grounds are deemed level enough. This will ensure the surface of the rings is as flat and level as possible and will encourage the grass to grow, making it safer for the exhibitors and dogs.

For members of the Metropolitan, Hunter, Illawarra & South East and Western Regions, it’s Election time again. Please participate by voting. Voting closes on Friday 6 October 2023. Please note that the representative for the Western Region, Mrs Ann Moy, was elected unopposed.

A talented line-up of 28 children checked in for the 2023 Junior Handler State Finals, held in conjunction with the North of the Harbour Championship Shows on 22 July. Jorja Baxter was the overall winner with Charlotte Manton as runner-up. Jorja will be the NSW representative at this month’s National finals with the opportunity to compete as Australia’s winner at Crufts. Coverage of the State Junior Handler Finals commences on page 8.

Directly following the Junior State Finals (from page 13), we have coverage of the North of the Harbour All Breeds Kennel Club three Championship Shows, the double shows held on Saturday 22 July and the single show on Sunday. It was an extremely busy weekend at Orchard Hills, as not only were the Junior State Finals on the Saturday, but the Club also had five Specialty Shows on the Saturday as well as two specialties on the Sunday.

After several years of cancellation due to Covid-19 and flooding of our grounds, the annual DOGS NSW 2023 Endurance Test was held on 13 August at Orchard Hills, hosted by the DOGS NSW Obedience and Tracking Committee. There was a good entry for the event and, as the course is over 20kms, there were customary rest segments and vet checks along the way. Please turn to page 22 for coverage of the event.

DOGS NSW have had a great relationship with the organisers of the Dog Lovers Festival since its first show in 2014, almost 10 years now. This year’s event was a ‘bigger-thanever’ event, attracting more vendors, talks, demonstrations, attractions and media hype. To correspond with the Dog Lovers Festival, the organisers co-ran the Cat Lovers Festival in another pavilion close by, which attracted even larger crowds to both Festivals. DOGS NSW Public Relations Committee members, volunteers and our Affiliated Breed Clubs were kept incredibly busy all weekend, answering questions from the very enthusiastic public. We were very lucky to have a huge information stand that incorporated both breed and sporting information, along with a band of very knowledgeable members who were eager to share their knowledge with the public. Coverage of the event commences on page 27.

The spotlight feature this month is the Norwegian Elkhound, a bold and energetic breed that has a friendly, dependable personality. A Norwegian Elkhound’s temperament is a complex blend of loving attention and sharp mental agility. He’s loyal, patient with children and other dogs, has a playful sense of humour and is a trusty guardian. They’re quite a people-oriented breed and consider themselves to be an equal member of the family.

The winner of August’s competition, to win a Fursafe Emergency First Aid Kit was Lynelle Frew. Congratulations!

2023 JUNIOR HANDLER STATE FINAL ®

A chilly and slightly foggy morning on Saturday 22 July at the DOGS NSW Headquarters at Orchard Hills soon gave way to blue skies and a mild, sunny winter’s day for the 2023 NSW Junior Handler State Final, with the event running in conjunction with the North of the Harbour Kennel Club’s shows. A talented line-up of 28 children checked in to await their turn in the spotlight under the watchful eye of our mystery judge, Ms Kristy Lewis from South Australia, well known for her Sailoz Papillons and a successful Child Handler herself from the age of 7 years.

The 7 to under-10 years class was the first class to enter the ring, with five girls and one boy being put through their paces with their chosen dog. The concentration on their faces was plain to see and all the children put on a great display of their handling skills. Three children were selected by Ms Lewis to proceed to the final round and were allocated a swap dog by the judge. The swap dogs are a different breed from the dog which the finalists had already competed with in the first round today, and one that they had not met before. The finalists were given a 10-minute practice to meet the swap dog and their owner, and quickly learn how best to handle that breed. After returning to the ring, our judge set the finalists further handling exercises with these dogs, carefully comparing the way the children worked with the swap dogs. The placegetters were then announced - with 1st place awarded to Olivia Moorby piloting a Whippet and a Jack Russell Terrier, 2nd place to Amelie Duval who handled a Fox Terrier (Wire) and a Pug, and 3rd place to Emma Clark who took in a Pug and a Whippet.

The 10 to under-13 years was the largest class with 13 entrants; twelve girls and one boy, making our Judge work very hard to separate them and whittle the class down to six finalists. Swap dogs were allocated and a frantic 10-minute practice was again undertaken by the finalists and their swap dogs. After a stringent workout, including some tricky “T” exercises, the three placegetters were asked to step forward. The winner of this class was Gabrielle Tinker who took in an Australian Shepherd and a Fox Terrier (Smooth), 2nd place was awarded to Pippa Tulk handling an Australian Shepherd and a Keeshond, with 3rd place going to Alexis Haynes who worked with a German Shorthaired Pointer and a Bull Terrier.

The final class of the day was the 13 to under-19 years, nine competitors comprising one boy and eight girls, who put in a polished performance, displaying a high level of handling skills. Some very difficult choices had to be made by our judge to separate these talented youngsters. With her final five called into the centre of the ring and swap dogs allocated, the pressure built and the five young ladies returned to the ring to try and impress Ms Lewis and secure a place as one of the final three.

The time for the final round was now at hand. The three worthy class winners returned to the ring to work with their dog once again under the intense scrutiny of our judge – wishing and hoping that they would be the one to travel to the other side of Australia to represent NSW in the National Final in Perth, Western Australia in October and possibly to be appointed the Australian entrant at Crufts in 2024!

As Jorja, Gabrielle and Olivia completed their allotted exercises, the beautiful blue and white rosette for the 2023 DOGS NSW Junior Handler State Final Overall Winner was bestowed upon the 13 to under-19 years winner, Jorja Baxter, with loud cheering and clapping coming from the crowd gathered around the ringside. The 2nd placegetter from the 13 to under 19 class, Charlotte Manton, took her place at the top of the lineup and shortly after was delighted to be awarded the Runner-Up Rosette.

On behalf of the Junior Handler Working Party, I would like to congratulate all the finalists on their handling, sportsmanship, and camaraderie – you are all worthy winners indeed and fine representatives of the purebred dog world! This was beyond our hopes and it helps to steady the ship financially. We would like to thank our marvellous judging panel who drew this wonderful entry. The judges and the team of stewards led by Tony Tau, made sure the large entry on Saturday was managed as efficiently as possible, from a 9.00am start with Sweepstakes, allowing the last decision to be made at 7.15pm!!! Truly a great achievement!

Thanks are also due to the breed clubs who ran their specialties along with our all-breeds shows. These were on Saturday: the Bernese Mountain Dog Club, the Border Terrier Club, the Western Districts Boxer Club, and the White Swiss Shepherd Club. On Saturday we also had a late entry from the Bearded Collie Club, who ran an Open Show as part of the Judges Training Scheme; a very worthy effort.

On Sunday there were the very well-attended Dobermann Club and Finnish Lapphund Club shows. All these specialties contributed to boost the entry at the all-breeds shows and we are very grateful to those clubs.

A very special event on Saturday was the Junior Handler State Finals. This was a very well-run event that kept a large group of spectators interested for hours. It added enormously to the ambience of a great dog event weekend. Finally, a great big thanks must go to the DOGS NSW grounds staff. They keep those rings in immaculate order; they are a pleasure not only to exhibit on, but also simply to look at. They are a fine spectacle.

The Committee is already working on the 2024 shows and we look forward to seeing you all there again, plus your friends.

THAT the RNSWCC Articles of Association, Part II-Membership: Associate Membership, Clause 8(d) which read as follows:-

8(d) An Associate Member shall pay one half of the amount of the annual subscription from time to time payable by a member.

Be amended to read:-

8(d) An Associate Member shall pay one half 80% of the amount of the annual subscription from time to time payable by a member.

RATIONALE

The original concept introduced at the RNSWCC Annual General Meeting 2001 was for an additional level of membership called “Associate Membership”. It was introduced for pet owners and non- pedigree owners known as “Friends of the RNSWCC”. It is now necessary to achieve a more equitable membership contribution to support the various and ever-increasing list of dog sport activities.

8.2 V Gagan-Wilson 2008469530 to move by Special Resolution

THAT the RNSWCC Articles of Association, Part II-Membership: Cessation Fees and Subscriptions, Clause 16(a) & (b) which read as follows:-

16. Until otherwise determined by the Board of Directors a member who is in receipt of:

(a) a pension paid by the Department of Social Security, or

(b) any other like pension may be entitled to such reduction as the Board of Directors may from time to time determine of the entrance fee, annual subscription and other fees for services rendered by RNSWCC.

Be amended to read:-

RATIONALE

As there are various different types of concessions provided by the Government, as opposed to a pension, it is considered appropriate that the Articles be amended to allow for the broader range of concessions.

THAT the RNSWCC Articles of Association, Part III-The Board of Directors: Election of Board of Directors, Clause 30B(c), which reads as follows:-

30B(c) In the event of a casual vacancy occurring on the Board of Directors where the remaining term of office of the Director who caused the casual vacancy to occur is more than one year, the Board of Directors shall invite nominations to fill the vacancy in accordance with Article 31 and:-

(c) the ballot shall be declared by the Secretary immediately upon conclusion of the counting of votes (which shall be ‘first past the post’). Votes shall be counted by an electoral roll officer from the State Electoral Office appointed for the purpose by the Board of Directors; and

Be amended to read:-

RATIONALE

At the 2022 AGM, the members approved a change to Article 38B to allow for the use of the services of a private Returning Officer, Mr Andrew Bzadough of Club Elections NSW who has conducted the Ballot Count over many years. Article 30B(c) should have also been amended at that time, however, regrettably this Article was overlooked.

Please note that members attending the AGM should ensure that your membership is financial as this will be checked upon entry.

PROXY VOTING: A Proxy Appointment Form has been published in the DOGS NSW Weekly Woof, on the DOGS NSW website and other media platforms. In addition, the Proxy Appointment Form has been distributed to members via Special Notice and is also included in the Annual Report available online at www.dogsnsw.org.au

Norwegian Elkhound

History

As its name suggests, the Norwegian Elkhound was bred predominantly to hunt big game such as the elk and to survive harsh conditions of deep snow and dense forest.

Although its roots lie in Spitz-type breeds (as its appearance demonstrates), it is categorised as a Hound due to its superior hunting ability and is well known for its endurance and agility.

The Elkhound’s history has resulted in a breed that is hardy, intelligent and often protective. More recently, the Elkhound has become a precious family addition. It has a long history by man’s side and therefore makes a loyal comrade.

Temperament

Bringing together aspects of both the Hound and Spitz-type breeds, the Norwegian Elkhound proves an interesting mix. It is a friendly and playful breed that is also naturally independent and extremely intelligent. It would make an ideal family companion provided it is well-exercised and disciplined.

Due to its long history as a loyal hunting partner, the Elkhound was born for adventure. It will thrive best if allowed to exercise and explore outdoors. Some of its abilities include tracking, herding, hunting and sledding. The Elkhound would also make for a vigilant watchdog.

Health

According to Australian breeders, careful breeding has ensured that Elkhounds in Australia don’t suffer from many health problems. Some breeders may test for problems. Probably the most common problem is hip dysplaysia (HD). Hip scoring is voluntary but may give an indication of whether the condition is likely to develop. Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) has been seen in the Norwegian Elkhound as has Fanconi syndrome, however neither has surfaced in the breed in Australia.

Maintenance

The Elkhound’s coat is dense, naturally weather resistant and relatively easy to groom. It should be brushed regularly; brushing twice a week normally and then daily during shedding season should be sufficient.

Built to hunt all day, the Elkhound needs daily exercise to keep healthy and happy. Taking it for a long walk or varied play sessions will ensure it doesn’t get bored or, worse still, destructive.

Suitability

Although the Elkhound was bred to hunt, it is essentially a friendly and loyal breed that makes it an ideal family addition. It is also ideal for activities such as obedience, tracking or showing, however, it should be a family member foremost.

Appearance

The Elkhound’s physical features can all be attributed to the expression of a need.

Demonstrating a powerful appearance, it is a compact breed with a square outline and proud carriage. The robustness of this breed developed through hunts, often lasting days, where its stamina was more important than speed. Its ears are upstanding and its tail is carried over its back.

Its eyes give the Norwegian Elkhound a friendly appearance, not unlike its nature. Elkhounds come in greys of various shades with black tips on the outer coat; lighter areas appear on the chest, stomach, legs, underside of the tail, buttocks and in a harness mark.

Males should be 52cm at the withers while females should be approximately 49cm.

DOGS NSW Obedience & Tracking Committee 2023 ENDURANCE TEST

After several years of cancellation due to Covid-19 and wet weather, the annual DOGS NSW Obedience and Tracking Committee 2023 Endurance Test was held on 13 August at the DOGS NSW grounds at Orchard Hills.

It was a fabulous day, the weather gods were kind, the temperature was perfect and the participants were a happy, friendly and supportive group of members.

The Endurance Test was judged by Ms Antoinette Rebstein, assisted by trainee judge Kirsten Luke. The dogs were vet checked by Dr Jennifer Green BVSc and her amazing group of volunteer vet students from Sydney University (see bottom and middle right images on page 23).

There were fifteen qualifying teams on the day, made up of dogs of all shapes and sizes, handled by members of all ages. A hearty congratulations to these members and their newly ET-titled dogs.

A lot of training and preparation goes into ensuring a dog is fit enough to complete the Endurance Test and pass the necessary vet checks.

Conducted over 20kms, the ET commences with a vet exam to check the dog’s heart rate, temperature, paw pads and overall condition of the dog. This is followed by a willingness test involving a short heeling pattern with a halt and an on-lead recall. The dog is then required to gait on lead alongside the handler, either riding a bike or running, at an average speed of 10km/h.

The distance is split into three segments of 8km, 6km and 6km, with rest breaks of 15 minutes, 20 minutes and 15 minutes. The dog is vet-checked between each segment and again at the completion of the 20km. There is a second willingness test at the end to check that the dog is still happy to work with the handler.

TESTS/TRIALS

If you are interested in a future Endurance Test, entries are open to Dogs Australia registered dogs (main, limited, associate & sporting register) aged between 2 and 8 years. It is a great opportunity to get you and your dog in tip-top condition and is always a welcoming, fun, friendly morning out in the fresh air.

Millions of Aussie households don’t have a plan for wild weather and emergencies

Australians are being urged not to be complacent about preparing for wild weather and emergencies, with new research from NRMA Insurance revealing that more than 12.3 million Australians1. don’t have an emergency plan. The research2. features in the latest edition of the NRMA Insurance Wild Weather Tracker (the Tracker) and highlights the critical need for every Australian household to have an emergency plan, with only one in five families having discussed the safest place to meet should an emergency happen (21%).

Apathy around emergency planning was also evident in pet owners, with two-thirds stating they do not know where they would safely keep their pets if the unexpected happened (66%). The findings follow the launch of the new improved Get Prepared app, co-created by the Australian Red Cross and NRMA Insurance to make it simple for Aussie households to create an all-hazards emergency RediPlan.

NRMA Insurance Executive Manager Claims Natalie Major is encouraging everyone to use the app to plan how they would respond and recover in an emergency.

“The Get Prepared app is a digital version of the Red Cross RediPlan, making it easier for Aussies to create an emergency plan,” Ms Major said. “The app ensures that you have all the information you need such as key contacts, meeting places and important documents on-hand and easily accessible. It also prompts people to consider how they would manage stress during and after an emergency.”

The advice to have an emergency plan is particularly important with a warmer and drier than average winter forecast, leading into a potentially dangerous bushfire season.

NRMA Insurance received 10,151 claims for wild weather damage to homes and vehicles nationally during autumn. Most of these claims were for damage to vehicles (5,478) with intense hailstorms in New South Wales causing extensive damage in late May. More than a third of all home claims nationally were the result of severe weather damage this autumn.

The Australian Red Cross Head of Emergency Services Andrew Coghlan says it’s important Australians prepare in advance for any type of emergency their household may encounter: “Emergencies can occur anywhere, at any time and when they happen, there are lots of decisions to make. Last year alone, the Australian Red Cross supported more than 130,000 people during emergencies such as bushfires, floods and severe storms.”

Acupuncture is for all creatures great and small

Acupuncture may not just be for the benefit of human health and wellbeing. A growing number of pets in Brisbane are signing up for the ancient Chinese therapy to treat their aches and pains, too.

Queensland Veterinarian and Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist Dr Alison Shen has documented first-hand how acupuncture leads to “positive and incredible outcomes” that benefit her furry patients every day. “Acupuncture is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is based on the principle of applying small needles or pressure to specific points in the body for the purpose of therapy, disease prevention and maintenance of health. It works for all creatures great and small,” said Dr Shen.

The Fear Free® certified vet recently launched her ‘passion project’, The Acupuncture Vet in Paddington, where pets like Eddie the Dachshund and Percival the cat have found much relief for their ailments. Dr Shen also treats guinea pigs and even wildlife such as koalas, kangaroos and wombats.

“Acupuncture has no adverse side effects, no drug interactions, does not require hospital stays and is a very effective and non-invasive treatment for many conditions including pain,” said Dr Shen. For most animals, the insertion of fine acupuncture needles is virtually painless, and they become very relaxed and even sleepy, she added. “Holistic therapies like acupuncture, herbal medicine, hydrotherapy, therapeutic ultrasound and laser therapy are not meant to replace, but in fact, complement traditional veterinary medicine extremely well,” said Dr Shen. Complementary therapies also play an important role in palliative care, especially where conventional medicine and surgery treatments are no longer an option, and for pets during a challenging recovery period, such as in between injury recovery and post-surgery rehabilitation.

“Acupuncture assists with the maintenance of health and balance, and prevention of pain and disease, particularly in elderly patients suffering with osteoarthritis and chronic illnesses, those on multiple medications, in chronic pain or looking for alternative therapies and natural, non-medicated pain relief,” she said.

Dr Shen’s interest in rehabilitation and pain started after years of practice in the mobile vet space. “Visiting our most vulnerable patients and listening to their owners, I felt there was a huge requirement and gap in our industry to help these patients and owners,” she said. “I witnessed the struggles many pet owners faced during the recovery period and the need for reassurance, guidance and help they desperately required to get them through this challenging time.”

Case Study: Eddy the Dachshund

Eddy - 6 year old - Grade 1 IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease) also suffers from separation anxiety. Eddy has had acupuncture and other therapies to help manage any grade IVDD flare-ups for the last 3 years. As he suffers from separation anxiety, he is also on behaviour modification medications. His behaviour and pain are very closely linked. During a flare-up, his separation anxiety becomes worse and he cannot be left alone.

As he is on a few medications and has a sensitive stomach we try to manage his pain more naturally with Veterinary acupuncture and laser (and avoid NSAIDs). He also has Therapeutic ultrasound on his sore right hip and hind leg, which seems to become tense with trigger points.

After each treatment session and rest, his pain, anxiety and back resolve quickly. He has a very vigilant pet owner who can read his behaviour and pain very well. Rehabilitation exercises for him include strengthening, flexibility, balance and proprioception.

Owner Alicia Romero said, “I chose to do acupuncture as I wanted to explore additional ways to help Eddy supercharge his recovery. We were already doing the traditional things such as pain medication, NSAIDs and strict rest. I felt his recovery was very slow and was worried he may not get his full mobility back.

“I started the sessions about 8 weeks after Eddy was initially diagnosed with IVDD and have seen many benefits so far. If his back is sore, it can be difficult for him to get comfortable lying down and he can be quite restless and start pacing. But after sessions, I notice he is more relaxed, restful and more comfortable lying down. The reason for this is that acupuncture helps reduce pain, inflammation and swelling on the spine. He also needs NSAIDs for less time. A smoother, faster recovery helps him get back to his normal life sooner which is good for his mental health, too.”

Acupuncture is one of the safest forms of medical treatment for animals when it is administered by a properly trained veterinarian. Side effects of acupuncture are rare, but they do exist, and may not be suitable for some animals.

“Acupuncture is also becoming more accepted in the veterinary industry as vets are embracing complementary therapies and considering these treatments for their own pets,” said Dr Shen.

“We accept referrals from veterinarians and rely on their continued care of patients for follow-up on x-rays, preventative care and their medical health and monitoring.”

Dr Alison Shen founded The Acupuncture Vet clinic in Brisbane in May 2023. She is involved in wildlife rehabilitation at the Possumwood Wildlife Hospital (Bungendore NSW) which was set up after the devastating 2020 bushfires.

Dr Shen and her identical twin sister, Dr Audrey Shen (also a vet) run the popular Future Vet Kids Camp in various locations in Australia to inspire animal-loving kids with all the wonders of the veterinary animal profession.

Sydneysiders flock to the 2023

The new ‘Festival’ format for Sydney Dog Lovers attracted enormous and enthusiastic crowds where ‘tens of thousands’ of visitors attended over two busy days on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 August at Sydney Showground.

The Festival, located at Sydney Olympic Park’s Dome and adjoining pavilion, received fantastic media coverage, with The Australian, Daily Telegraph, Today Show, News.com plus many more coming down to show their support for dogs (and dog lovers). To add to the media hype, the inaugural Cat Lovers Festival was running next door at the same time!

The event organisers included the Cat Lovers Festival next door, which increased the traffic flow substantially.

The Festival was an amazing event offering patrons many unique retail outlets to purchase gifts and treats for their pets. DOGS NSW are seeking partnerships with new and exciting retailers in an effort to be able to offer exclusive specials for our members, which include boarding, transport and insurance, just to name a few.

At this year’s event, we were supported by 19 breed specialty clubs and groups, who all had amazing displays as they decorated their stands to showcase their breeds, share information and make future contacts and relationships. Thank you to all these clubs for their ongoing support and those who were able to send dogs over to the Ask the Breeder stand for the public to hear their breed talks. Clubs in attendance were: Australian Shepherd Association of NSW, Basenji Club of NSW Inc, Border Collie Club of NSW Inc, Border Terrier Club of NSW, British Terrier Club of NSW Inc, Bullmastiff Club of NSW Inc, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club NSW Inc, The Chow Chow Dog Club of NSW Inc, Collie Club of NSW Inc, Coton de Tulear, The Country Griffon Bruxellois Club of NSW Inc, The Dachshund Club of NSW Inc, Dobermann Club of NSW Inc, Finnish Lapphund Club of NSW, French Bulldog Club of NSW Inc, German Shepherd Dog League, Irish Wolfhound Club of NSW Inc, Lagotto Romagnolo Club of NSW Inc, Neapolitan Mastiffs, Norwegian Elkhounds, Papillon (Dog) Club of NSW Inc, Welsh Corgi (Pembroke), Pomeranian Club of NSW, Rottweiler Club of NSW Inc, NSW Samoyed Club Inc, Schnauzers, The Whippet Club of NSW Inc and the Yorkshire Terrier Club of NSW.

DOGS NSW Information and Sports stand was supported by committee members and some very special members who gave up their time, and in some cases most of their weekend, to support us. Many thanks to John Maclean, Lyn Mansfield, Louise Patterson, April and Charlie Bezzina with Zara, Robin Kerr, Judy and Ben Bradley, Leisel and Bell Kolodziej, Liz Gallagher and Melanie Kenny.

The Ask the Breeder stand was well supported for most breeds and John Mclean worked hard all weekend keeping the talks flowing well and supporting the presenters with their presentations, keeping them informative and full of great content for the eager public.

The public was very keen to learn about all the activities DOGS NSW had on offer and was eager to obtain guidance on choosing sports and finding clubs and support networks in their local areas. Many families were looking for activities in which to join with a community of like-minded people and interests; having volunteers from different areas of NSW assisted us this year with local knowledge.

Running and managing a huge event like this could not be achieved without the assistance of DOGS NSW Staff who help out so willingly. I would like to thank our grounds team Chris Gedyzk, Dave Hayes and Matthew Tyne for their help with the early morning bump in and out and organising all the heavy lifting for set up. The office team members, particularly Kerry Christofi and Abby Davis, I would personally like to thank for the hours of dedicated work in making this event such a huge opportunity for our unique Dog World to be showcased to the public.

Until we all re-gather at the next opportunity for us to present our purebred dogs, I ask clubs and groups to please consider being part of the next event at the 2024 Dog Lovers Festival. Not only is it great exposure for your breed, but you can gather some terrific contacts while having a wonderful time educating the public about purebred dogs. NOTICE TO ADVERTISERS

The Competition and Consumer Act came into force

DISPUTES

From time to time, members refer to DOGS NSW matters in which it is not appropriate for our organisation to become involved. For example, disputes between members in relation to the sale of dogs. These are usually private matters to be determined by the contractual agreements between parties. Disputes on such matters should be resolved by the courts and not by DOGS NSW.

Members are requested to refrain from referring such matters to DOGS NSW. They are issues of a private or domestic nature and should properly be resolved by the courts or the Department of Fair Trading.
