The HMS Bounty SOME PEOPLE CHASE RAINBOWS, I CHASE TALL SHIPS Text & Photos by Nancy Bloom

ith the tragic loss of the HMS Bounty, I recall how I once got the opportunity to photograph this amazing tall ship in Provincetown, Massachussets. There I also met Captain Walbridge and his crew. On August 21,2012 I received an email from Rex McKinsey, Provincetown’s Harbormaster, informing me that the HMS Bounty had just tied up at MacMillan Pier. Rex often let me know when large vessels entered the harbor knowing my passion for photographing tall ships and schooners. I immediately went to my computer and read everything I could find on the HMS Bounty. I had heard she was famous, but didn’t realize how famous. Wow! It was like having a movie star come to Provincetown. I headed to the pier and took several photos of this beautiful majestic vessel. I spent some time speaking with her friendly crew members and learned that she would only be in Provincetown for 12 hours—at 6 a.m. she would be heading out for Plymouth, MA and then from there to Gloucester, MA. Wanting so much to take a photo of her with her sails up, I got up early the following morning and headed to the pier. When I arrived, she had already left. I quickly drove to Herring Cove Beach and waited. Finally she appeared and I was able to take several photos of her as she passed by. I drove to the end of the beach and was able to capture her going around the hook of Cape Cod right by the lighthouse. What a beautiful sight it was. That wasn’t enough—I got in my car and headed to Provincetown Visitor’s Center and then again to Race Point Beach to take more photos. That still wasn’t enough so I headed to Gloucester, MA a week later to catch my last glimpse of her during the Mayor’s Race. The HMS Bounty, a replica of the original Bounty, was created by MGM in 1962 for the movie, “Mutiny on the Bounty,” which starred Marlon Brando. Ship builders constructed the tall ship from the original plans of the Royal Navy with one exception— they made her one-third larger than the original Bounty to accommodate cameras and other filming equipment. Since 1962, she has starred in numerous movies, including the “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” with Johnny Depp, “Treasure Island” with Charlton Heston in 1989 and more recently she appeared in the 2004 “The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie.” On October 25, 2012, the HMS Bounty left New London, Connecticut. She was heading for St. Petersburg, Florida hoping to avoid hurricane Sandy. Four days later, the ship’s captain contacted the Coast Guard reporting that the tall ship was taking on water. At the time of this notification, she was off the coast of North Carolina about

160 miles from the hurricane with a crew of sixteen people who were preparing to abandon ship. Thanks to the help of the United States Coast Guard, fourteen people were rescued. Unfortunately, longtime Captain Robin Walbridge and crewmember, Claudene Christian, did not survive. Search efforts for Captain Walbridge took place until November 1st when they were suspended. The world will miss both of these amazing people and the HMS Bounty—one of the most famous square-rigged sailing vessels.

As Paolo Vitelli, chairman of the Azimut Benetti Group says: “Azimut Grande represents a tangible response to the needs expressed by our boat owners: it is an appealing and distinctive line that doesn’t cut corners in terms of comfort and flawless performance. Rigorous trials and tank testing have helped develop a high performance keel that can cruise with ease, even in rough seas. Adopting water jet transmissions has significantly limited vibrations and noise, maximizing on board comfort for the boat owner and guests”. What is the aim of the new 120SL? To experience the sea and the yacht without limits, reducing the distinction between interior and exterior until it practically disappears. A goal which springs to life as soon as the gangway comes up: as soon as you climb on board, you’ll find yourself on the main deck. Here, the cockpit and the living area come together to form a unified deck, with commanding views at all times of the day. The main saloon of the Azimut Grande 120SL is 60 square metres; its 50 square metres of glazing and the additional operable skylight above – which reveals more than 15 square metres of sky and sea - provide an unprecedented sensation: the distinction between inside and outside virtually disappears, there is no longer any difference felt between the two. The liveability and expanse of the interiors is emphasized by opening the glazing, which separates the living area from the cockpit to create a single space in direct contact with the sea. The living area comes standard with a ten-person dining table and two sofas, and can of course, be closed off and climate controlled. The main deck is an area where boat owners can freely express their taste and personalize the furnishings. Drawing on the boatyard’s design experience, its technical staff are on hand to establish the boat owners’ desires and propose solutions that shape them and bring them to life. The lower deck layout offered by Azimut is a perfect example of high liveability. The owner’s cabin measures 43 square metres, with 11 of these dedicated to separate his-and-

The crew area with its three cabins – one with a double bed – serves to separate and insulate the owner’s cabin from the engine room, further ensuring quiet and comfort. The layout also includes three guest cabins: one VIP cabin in the bow with a double bed, and two cabins with twin beds amidships, each with a private bathroom. In addition, the lower deck is equipped with an additional day head for day guests. All the spaces on the boat are detailed with finishes and materials in light and dark tones; brown stained Zebrano wood and cream coloured Foglizzo leather are paired with steel and glass elements. The lighting scheme employs recessed LED ceiling lights and spots with continuous intensity adjustment. Even the exterior is designed and constructed to offer the best possible vacation experience. Towards the bow, a small sitting room and two large sunpads allow for total relaxation, all the while ensuring the necessary privacy. Between the openable roof section over the saloon and cockpit, a flybridge creates an additional outdoor living area equipped with a steering station, Jacuzzi, and dinette sofa. At the stern, is the swimming platform above the transmissions with stairs going up to the cockpit. The garage, among the largest in this category, can house a tender of up to 5.5 metres and two jet skis up to 2.9 meters in length.

The 16V 2000 MTU is one of the most reliable and modern engines on the market and is used in various configurations. The three engines are paired with two Rolls Royce water jets - KaMeWa side water jets and a central booster - for true thoroughbred performance: The maximum speed is 36 knots, with unexpected acceleration and handling for a unit of this size. The Ferretti 870 is yet another accomplishment resulting from the cooperation between Studio Zuccon International Project, AYT - Advanced Yacht Technology (Ferretti Group’s research and naval design center), and a team of architects and designers of the Centro Stile Ferrettigroup. While preserving some of the most successful features of its predecessors, the Ferretti 870 stands out for its many innovative design solutions, including the bronze dome over the navigation bridge - also found on the Ferretti 800 - and large glazing extending along the entire main deck and in the hull, at the cabins’ level. The two open-view windows in the master cabin, in particular, have now been joined by large windows with opening portholes in the guest cabins and two windows in the VIP cabin (located at the extreme bow), which result in extraordinary indoor brightness and offer guests wonderful views. The new Ferretti 870 stands out for the extensive use of fine walnut-stained natural oak wood, which can also be found in some interior décor details, such as the doors and drawers of the furniture, featuring lacquered tops and frames. Below deck, wood is combined with leather, which has been used to furnish all cabins. The living area, dining area, galley and helm station are all on the main deck, but the last two, located afore, have been completely sepa-

The white lacquered kitchen by Ernestomeda is equipped with Bosch household appliances and a GE side-byside fridge, and also features a functional quartz resin worktop. The lower deck is accessed from the lobby, amidships. All cabins on the Ferretti 870 have been enlarged by moving all lower deck areas towards the stern, so as to make use of the widest part of the yacht to the fullest - a solution that did not require any changes to the engine rooms, the crew quarters or the garage with respect to the previous model, the Ferretti 830. The new 870 includes three double cabins (in the guest cabin located to port the beds can also be separated), plus a fourth one with twin beds located along the right broadside. All cabins have their own ensuite head and separate shower box. The master cabin has been entirely redesigned: it is now positioned lengthwise and has become a true full-beam cabin, incredibly bright thanks to the double glazing with portholes and finely furnished with a sofa that extends along the entire length of the portside glazing and a sliding lacquered table. A vanity unit with a builtin pouf is located under the opposite glazing. As far as performance, the new Ferretti 870 comes with two 12V 2000 M94 MTU engines which allow it to reach a cruising speed of 27 knots and a maximum speed of 30.5 knots. At the maximum speed, the boat has a range of 300 nautical miles, which increases to approx. 358 nautical miles at cruising speed. f you happen to come across a Wider 42’ while messing around in a boat off of Fort Lauderdale, you won’t forget it. Its profile is unique, with its raised foredeck and a large lounging area forward of the helm station. It’s like a song you can’t stop humming. It gets in your head and only time will let it go. If you see it at anchor, you’ll definitely remember the boat, in fact enough to ask ‘what is that?’ That’s when the Wider 42’ gets actually wider. Unlatch the gunwales, punch two buttons and via the automatic, electronically controlled mechanism the cockpit lives up to its name. In 12 seconds what was 97.7 square feet becomes an area of 193.8 square feet. The gunwales move out, the floor panels fold down and take their places. Unseen (from aboard the boat) are the hull sides that fold down and function as flotation and stabilization. At anchor, it effectively becomes a trimaran. You can extend only one side if you wish. There are pop-out safety gates fore and aft that keep wandering guests on board. There’s a boarding ladder too, making reboarding from the water easy. The entire unit is built in carbon fiber and stainless steel to minimize corrosion and all its related woes. Darren Datson, U.S. sales manager, says it is dropped in as unit and installed that way. The Wider 42’ was developed by Tilli Åntonelli, the man behind Ferretti’s Pershing brand, in conjunction with Mark Wilson, champion powerboat racer. The high performance, lightweight model was built according to the very latest vacuum-infusion molding techniques using carbon and vinylester resins, and other components in vacuum pre-preg carbon. Its stunning performance is guaranteed by the combination of a lightweight model, excellent weight distribution, and multi-stepped hull technology, Arneson Drives with high performance propellers driven by a pair of staggered, 480-horsepower Cummins QSB 5.9 diesels. Offering maximum versatility of use, the owner of a Wider 42’ has the option between two different stern configurations. (It is possible to order it with both configurations, as they are interchangeable.) The Wider 42’ houses a 11.2foot personal water craft in an open garage; al-

The space forward of the pilot house, the mobile terrace, is fitted with a carbon bench, which can be split in two in order to create a luncheon/dining area together with an electric table that lifts from within the floor. The pilot and co-pilot seats can be folded up and become a comfortable back support for standing while driving. The external galley furniture is fitted with a sink, a large central worktop, a teppan-yaki griddle for healthy cooking without flame, and a 51-liter removable icebox. There is an observer’s seat behind the main seat—convenient and comfortable. The steering console includes a built-in multiview touch-screen display, similar to those used in Formula 1 racing cars. The center console features all of the necessary functions to operate the vessel, including controlling the movement of the mobile terrace as well as the lights and anchor operation. The wheel rotates around the permanently affixed center console. The forepeak is home to the double berth as well as the head and shower. At the tip of the bow, the anchor features a patented system, which enables deploying its chain without the risk of it becoming tangled up during sailing. A CCTV camera is turned towards the anchor system with the relative built-in display in the center of the steering wheel. This makes it possible to operate directly from the helm station. Keeping with Antonelli’s lightweight mindset, fixed-fiberglass seats have been replaced with inflatable ones. If desired, they can be used in the water as floating mattresses and seats, increasing the relaxation factor. Produced in polyurethane and equipped with a small compressor, when not in use, the seats can be placed in the cavity of the bulwark of the mobile terraces. Antonelli has given a lot of thought to the Wider 42’. It seems he thought of everything— including two boats in one. There is also a 150footer shown on the website which means there is as a bigger boat in the works. If you decide to buy one, get used to people gawking.

ishing vessel ‘Richard & Arnold’ has been plying the waters of New England for over 80 years. In the autumn of 2011, we were faced with the prospect of having to scrap our old fishing boat after she was accidently struck while at the dock, causing it to leak worse than it had during our 32 years of ownership. We chose to keep the traditional fishing method alive while bringing the old wooden dragger into the 21st century. We had two choices: give up on the boat, letting it be stripped and junked or turn her into something more, breathing new life into the old wooden vessel. Because fishing is our business and our way of life, the boat needed to be safe, with enough comfort to call it home for months at a time. Built in 1924 by the Casey Boat Building Co, Fairhaven, MA she is one of the oldest continually fishing vessels in the NE Atlantic waters. The original plans were lost in a fire at the boat yard in the 1950’s and it is impossible to know exactly who drew her

lines, but we were told that Major Casey collaborated with John Alden giving her the lines of a coastal schooner. Her homeport of Provincetown, MA has supported a fishing industry since before the pilgrims found its wide harbor. With its decline, the regulating of fish has become a top priority thereby spawning a new generation of fishermen and boats. Recent regulations have allowed buying, selling and trading of permits in order to keep a sustainable fishing industry intact. We are seeing the beginning of a new era with tighter controls, modern efficient machines and fewer boats. In order to continue using the Richard & Arnold for fishing, we needed to do something about the leaky old hull. My husband tells me he has pumped Cape Cod Bay through her. Our boat needed serious work, changes necessary for structural integrity. We were fortunate to be introduced at Rose Marine in Gloucester, MA to Dickey Crowley who would teach us the proper way to put glass and cloth on a hull. My husband, Dave has had a number of experiences with fiberglass, but nothing like what was in store for us. Winter months on the North Shore of Massachusetts can be extreme in cold, snow and wind. In order to keep out the elements, maintaining an

The 60-foot vessel has been given a complete hull upgrade, renewing her original lines, adding another lifetime. The metamorphosis took 3 months under the big white tent. The hard work has paid for itself ten times over, as the Richard & Arnold now is safe, dry and still able to catch fish. The wooden hull is now sheathed and surrounded by an ecoskeleton. The pump rarely is heard and she has picked up two knots while steaming. For all of this we thank the men at Rose Marine and Mr. Crowley without whom this would not have been possible. After a spring fishing for squid and a

The area below deck is being readied in a manner suitable for living aboard so that the captain’s wife will have her creature comforts: a new galley, regulation head, double bunk and a place to write. The foredeck has been rebuilt, lengthened, taking part of the old fish-hold, adding eight feet of living space to the foc’sle. The old interior was completely removed and an outline of the new living quarters is now taking shape. If everything goes as planned, we expect to be fishing again this spring, this time in comfort. Great Boating iPad Apps – Part 1

oaters are catching the wave and diving into the App Store for everything from navigation & charting to basic communications apps for their iPads, and Apple says that they’ve sold over 100 million of them since they first hit the market. With over 12,175,900 registered vessels in the U.S. alone, I wouldn’t be surprised to find that a few million boaters now use a mobile device of some kind.

Fortunately for those who have climbed onboard the mobile tech boat, there are some terrific new apps ready to make boating even more fun and safe.

The biggest change over the past year for handheld devices is the number of apps now available that connect to NMEA data via WiFi and TCIP. Which reminds me of the top question readers ask, “How can I interface my boats’ systems to my iPad?” Some great news for the techie-types who want to virtually “run” their boat from the palm of their hand.

Many developers like Digital Yachts, Zapf, Ocean Equipment and ShipModul, have brought this capability to the world of iOS, thereby allowing data from instruments like wind and speed, as well as AIS and radar to be streamed to a laptop over WLAN or over WiFi to an iOS device. Note: You must have a device (such as Digital Yacht’s iAIS or SeaMate1A) that will get your NMEA data from your boat’s network to your various i-devices. But the good news is that it’s getting easier to integrate and the new apps are really well designed. Here are a few for your consideration:

NAVIGATION

Garmin BlueChart Mobile Garmin International Free (Charts are available via in-app purchase and range from $29.99 -$69.99).

Just released in November 2012, BlueChart Mobile is the next level of Charting for boaters with iPads. It does what most of the top Nav apps do, like use the same BlueChart data available for Garmin chartplotters right on your iPad, but that’s where the similarities end and the cool design takes you on a whole new voyage to charting heaven. The first big new element is the download interface. With BlueChart Mobile, once you’ve got your chart (via the easy in-app purchase), you’re offered a large-scale view of the area (say North America), with a simple grid overlay. By clicking on a specific box you can choose which areas to download—a great space-saver for your device. Zoom into to see chart features and overlays for weather conditions, (temps, wind direction/speed) grib. One drawback: The new Garmin app does not support NMEA or AIS or any of the WiFi units mentioned here. Plus, you’ll have to buy iPad charts even though you may already have charts for your Garmin chart plotter.

BlueChart Mobile has ActiveCaptain inside! For those of you not already using it, ActiveCaptain is a web community that provides real-time content generated by mariners, for mariners. It’s a virtual cruising guide that never goes out of date. Read and write reviews about marinas, local boating knowledge, anchorages and hazards. More than 100,000 boaters write reviews and update the information on ActiveCaptain—with more users joining all the time. Best Feature: It’s seriously difficult to pick just one favorite feature on this terrific app, but it may just be the cool info wheels that pop-up when you click on any icon from the ActiveCaptain overlay or hazard. It’s just a really fun interface!

If you’re lucky enough to have Raymarine electronics onboard you’ll want to have this handy app on your iPad that lets you display everything from you e-Series or c-Series Multi-function Display (v 315 or later).

Even better than RayView, RayControl puts your iPad in the driver’s seat. Use it just as you would your Multi-function Display, with touch screen interaction and a virtual slide-out MFD keypad. Chart plotting, depth/Fishfinder, engine systems, radar, even view video from any installed cameras. Uses onboard WiFi network.

What makes one Nav app stand apart from all the others? In the case of the new SEAiq, it’s the ability to view always up-to-date vector charts of the USA; however the free versions do limit you to only displaying charts of scales greater than 1:50,000 until you purchase the upgrade. Vector charts offer more detail and faster scrolling than Raster. SEAiq Open is unique for allowing users to install their own charts, including S-57, S63, and CM93 charts, which means that you don’t have to purchase the same charts you’ve already bought a few times over. Though the interface is less than ideal (transfer chart files via iTunes), it is another great benefit not found in other nav apps.

You’ll need a fast connection to set it up the first time. SEAiq Free and SEAiq Open are among the few navigation apps with a useful free version. All the versions offer some good bells & whistles including ActiveCaptain, WiFi NMEA, AIS, and night color modes. You’ll need a fast connection for the set up. I found it took quite some time to download charts or transfer ActiveCaptain data and wished that it could have done it in the background while I went on with other things. Best Feature: ActiveCaptain interface and support of external NMEA/AIS over WiFi. In fact, according to the creator of SEAiq Mark Hayden (a sailor who lives aboard with his family), it is the ONLY charting app of those reviewed here that supports NMEA and AIS over WiFi and TCP. “The SEAiq AIS is good enough that professional pilots that board 1000ft freighters use it,” Mark tells us.

hether stockpiling mansions or adopting orphans from impoverished nations in the name of everlasting love, most stars live outside society in a way that mortals, struggling to pay the minimum due on their credit cards, can hardly relate. Singer-songwriter Billy Joel is no different, his most pronounced eccentricity is his lifelong love affair with the sea which has endured the rise and fall of fame, fortune and several trips back and forth to divorce court. Despite the fame and the many millions, Joel, now 60, has worked to stay connected to the water, both as a sailor and as a designer, creating jobs for the Mainers in 1996 with the development of the Shelter Island Runabout vessel line, when the economy turned sour. These 38-foot, go-fast lobster boats, which run 55 mph, put boat builders who were dangerously close to standing in the unemployment line back on the assembly line. “Billy didn’t come from money and he considers himself very lucky in this life,” says Capt. Gene Pelland,

the man entrusted with Joel’s boats. “In his upbringing, if you didn’t work for something you didn’t get it. Billy has a strong work ethic, whether it was playing a wedding until 2 a.m. or getting up at 4 a.m. to jump on a boat as a kid.” A New York State of Mind Joel’s love affair with boats began about the same time that he started playing the piano, around age four, “borrowing” people’s boats that he and his Long Island buddies always brought back. As a boy, he dreamed about cruising in a tramp steamer on the South Seas, about as far away from New York as he could get. An inauspicious child of divorce, musing of an adventurous sea life served as both an escape and a goal. As a songwriter, Joel channeled his working-class roots while his success carried him far away from them. His career began playing weddings in The Echoes at 16 and he had a stint as a bar singer. His first album, Cold Spring Harbor, was released in 1971 and included She’s Got A Way, re-released as a hit years later. After leaving the real Cold Spring Harbor of his inspiration, he moved to Los Angeles and became a household name, skyrocketing to superstardom in 1973 with the title track, Piano Man. While it only hit #25 on the Billboard Top 100, it stands as one of Joel’s anthems, right up there with My Life and Uptown Girl, the iconic video with model ex-wife Christie Brinkley. He wed Brinkley on a yacht cruising the Hudson River at the height of his fame in 1985. The six time Grammy winner has sold over 100 million records, has had top10 hits in three different decades and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999. The fortune he amassed tickling the ivories enabled him to stop borrowing boats and indulge his oceanic obsession, owning as many as five boats at a time, including a fleet of head-turning Downeasters. Whenever possible during tours with Elton John over the past 20 years, Joel stayed on one of his boats with his dogs, Fionoula and Sabrina, over a hotel. Billy’s Boats Joel’s been labeled a balladeer and reincarnated himself as a rocker, but he will always be a hard working piano man yearning for the sea. He co-designed his 57-footer, Vendetta, with Doug Zurn. The vintage commuter ran 50 mph at the top end and, zipping Billy from his house in Oyster Bay into Manhattan. tops out at 30 knots, good for a lobster boat. His “jeep” is a 28-foot aluminum landing craft that served as a tender for his recently sold jewel, Audacious, a 95-foot Inace. Luxe granite and jatoba, a native Brazilian cherry wood, comprise Audacious’ rather traditional interior, complemented with neutral tones for furniture, bulkheads, and carpet. This explorer sports an on-deck master stateroom located behind the wheelhouse, where the sky lounge was originally located, with three generously appointed staterooms below deck, all with granite ensuite heads. All crew quarters were refurbished for modern comfort, one of which is in the fos’cle. The staterooms and crew cabins were relocated during the vessel’s retrofit where a custom cargo hold was created for three of Joel’s motorcycles, two Royal Enfields and a Honda Valcary to explore Caribbean islands. The expedition yacht’s functional configuration has always captured Joel. With the look and function of a cargo ship, it entrances him almost as much as the lobster motif. It’s the same genre: a vessel that salty men with calloused hands actually live and work on. “I want a boat to look like a boat and feel like a ship,” Joel says. “Even my fishing boats are anachronistic looking, like something out of the 1930’s.” He grew up fishing and has been a sailor all his life . You can hear it in his songs, especially those that pull your heartstrings. Joel used the nautical metaphors in the 1993 hit Lullaby to explain the concept of death to his then young daughter, Alexa. His Grammy nominated album Storm Front, with its number one, Top 40 hit Downeaster Alexa, is a tribute to the bay men still struggling to eke out a living in one of the world’s most dangerous occupations. He connects with the type of people associated with the water, bonded by camaraderie in the elements. Cold Spring Harbor, one of Joel’s first hits in 1970, is a direct influence of his working class, Long Island roots. Whether turbulent or peaceful, the ocean, as one’s ultimate destination, if not at least mentally, permeates Joel’s psyche and lyrics as embodied in River of Dreams. And what would happen if the piano man developed a permanent case of stage fright? He’s got royalties galore and myriad business interests beyond Maritime Music, but with an incurable case of boat on the brain, he’d probably be back on the water, busting his back, earning a living the hard way. Just for kicks. “It’s in his roots: you dig your heels in and you work,” Pelland says. “He’s not above jumping back on that oyster boat that made his hands bleed.”

What made the course change noteworthy was the yacht being the legendary Lion New Zealand maxi and my 10-year-old daughter Maia was at the wheel. “Did I do it?” Maia asked. “You rocked the tack.” I responded. “Let’s do it again,” was the response from Lion’s cheery skipper. When I first met my husband Evan, twenty six years ago, we were captivated by the progress of this very yacht. It was speeding around the world as part of the Whitbread 1985-86 race (now the Volvo Around the World Race)—losing a leg here, gaining a leg there and all the while its Kiwi skipper, the late Sir Peter Blake was becoming an international hero. The race may have ended in Portsmouth, but our relationship didn’t, we were in love. Maia seemed older and wiser as she eyed the

And how much of this, I’ll call it spirit, might be flowing through the wheel into Maia’s hands. New Zealand is a land rich in spirit echoes, though in some ways to talk about them is

It’s probably not simply the oddness of imagining a sailboat (forest, building, beach…) imbued with a deeper energy that keeps us from saying such things out loud though. Perhaps these thoughts are simply too sacred for casual conversation. The Maori, who are the first people of Aotearoa, land of the long white cloud (or New Zealand as it’s come to be known), have many words for the energy of inanimate objects—my favorite is hau. Translated directly hau means wind, used differently it means the essence of something. As we sailed, I was imagining the yacht’s hau and perhaps even feeling it. But then the wind, the physical wind, gusted, and Lion surged forward, propelling us through the Ireland-green islands and back to Waitangi—the site of the founding of New Zealand as a nation. To see New Zealand adequately you need about six weeks. The goal is to travel clockwise, or anti clockwise, North Island, South Island, or a combo of both and set off exploring at a fairly leisurely pace. If, however, your trip to NZ is a quick visit from nearby Australia (as ours was), you need to develop a different strategy. We called ours the Sample NZ Tour. Much like in wine tasting, where you sip from a large number of varietals, vintages and vineyards (then try in vain to remember just which vineyard had the best Riesling on your next visit to the bottle shop...) in two days SNZ saw us travel from the Bay of Islands, to the Tasman Sea, through the Waipoua Kauri Forest to Hobbiton. The Tasman Sea was windy, wild and rugged. The lush and inspiring Kauri forest, a sacred place in Maori culture, is home to the amazing Mahuta, the tallest and largest kauri tree in New Zealand, which according to Maori legend is the father of the forest and all that dwell in it. From Waipoua we drove onward to Hobbiton, though the shire wasn’t our primary destination the way it was for Bilbo Baggins and so many of the movie’s fans. The movie set from Lord of the Rings 1 and 3 was recently rebuilt for the Hobbit movies. Over 65,000 faithful show up each year (some in costume, we had an elf and a hobbit on our tour) and wander through the hobbit trails—walking in Gandalf’s footsteps or looking out through Frodo’s door, reciting lines from the movies. Our true goal that day was the hot springs in Rotorua where New Zealand’s tourism began. Early Europeans set out to take the waters—the | 64 | www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com

natural thermal bathing pools created by geysers and since then, the region has remained one of the main attractions in New Zealand— while at the same time the sacred waters have been central to Maori culture. A soak in the hot bubbling water felt good after all the travel but we weren’t done sampling. We set off horse riding through the rolling green countryside and past sheep and further sheep (and yes, there are more sheep in New Zealand than people). Then we visited a Kiwi recovery program and saw a newly hatched chick. One evening we headed to a cultural show for a hangi (a feast cooked in an underground oven). But it was the special boats of New Zealand that were the biggest draw for us. And we journeyed back to Auckland with the goal of catching one more ride before the end of our trip. Sailing an America’s Cup boat is a dream of a lifetime for many sailors, and all the people who waited on the dock shared our giddy excitement. The goal of the company that runs it, SAILINZ, the same one we sailed Lion New Zealand, is to allow seasoned sailors as well as newbies to truly experience the power of an AC boat. Spray flew through the air as we charged along, hard on the wind. Auckland’s pretty skyline grew smaller and we flew past our rivals (even if they didn’t actually know we were racing against them). While Lion brought out our sense of awe, the AC boat brought out a previously underdeveloped competitive streak. When we tacked we did it tightly, working as a team, grinding the huge winches in unison. When it came time to raise the spinnaker, the complex move went perfectly. Perhaps the fact strangers came together as a team was simply a reflection of personal choice, and the effort of SAILNZ’s well-trained professional crew. But I’d like to think it was something more. Perhaps hau is a real thing, and perhaps the boat’s essence demanded that we sail her swiftly.

from Mexico to some yacht owners in Miami, noticed that many of the yachts lacked style and didn’t live up to the newly acquired artwork. She was then asked to help with the rest of the accesories. “We realized that we can offer our clients solutions that will allow them to really enjoy their yacht,” explains Fernanda. They understand that to nicely set up a yacht can be time consuming, so they began to offer their clients complete furnishing services. “Some of our clients from Mexico have their yacht here in Miami and when they arrive, they don’t want to waste their vacation time shopping to decorate so they call us,” explains Jimena. “They can find everything with us, and we also take care of setting it up for them.” Yachtfit opened its doors over a year ago. So far, they have already completed eleven orders and many more are in the works. As per their clients’ requests, they are expanding their business to work on homes and office spaces. The largest vessel they have worked on so far is a 164” Trinity and the smallest a 40” Intrepid. “Neither the size of the vessel nor the size of the order
