VICEM 46 METRES “M/Y VULCAN” JUST LAUNCHED
The impressive Vicem Vulcan 46 metres M/Y Vulcan is now on the water. This is the most challenging project for the world famous Turkish yard which is enlarging its horizons beyond mahogany construction into high-tech composite construction with three new sleek, fast yachts, including a 46m/151’, 35m/118’ and 32m/105’ for its Vulcan Line.

Established by Lorenzo Benetti in 1873, the company began its life building wooden boats used for local and international trade. Today, Benetti Yacht is part of the Azimut-Benetti Group, the biggest motor yachts builder in the world, and has 3 production sites: Viareggio, Livorno, and Fano along with offices in Livorno, Fort Lauderdale (USA), Dubai and Hong Kong. unset Harbour Yacht Club hosted the Official Kickoff Party for the 2013 Yacht & Brokerage Show on Wednesday, February 13th at SHYC in Miami Beach. The third annual event was co-hosted by Steve Sheer of Show Management, Dana Rhoden of The Dana Agency, April Donelson of Haute Living magazine and Doug Mason of SHYC. The invite-only, VIP cocktail event was an unforgettable evening of luxury that incorporated yachting, luxury automobiles, swimwear, a culinary showcase and fine art with cocktails courtesy of Grey Goose Vodka. Guests enjoyed a floating VIP Lounge aboard the 110 foot charter yacht “After Hours”. Every year, the Yacht and Brokerage Show transforms Collins Avenue into a multi-million dollar presentation of brokerage yachts including the world’s most extraordinary and uniquely designed vessels from the world’s foremost boat builders and brokerage houses.

2013 BACARDI MIAMI SAILING WEEK Photos by Cory Silken

ive one-design fleets, awash with competitors representing over a dozen nations, took part in the 2013 edition of the BACARDI Miami Sailing Week (BMSW) presented by EFG Bank. With points tight among the top contenders in each class, the big story of the regatta was the win of the 86th Bacardi Cup by the Florida team of Mark Mendelblatt (St. Petersburg) and Brian Fatih (Miami) - who had represented the USA in the Star class at the 2012 Olympics. Michael Kiss (Holland, Mich.) was the winner of the 44-boat Audi Melges 20. In the 18-boat Melges 24 class, Riccardo Simoneschi (Milan, ITA) won two of the three races sailed to claim the class title with 16 points. Three races were also sailed by the Viper 640 fleet, and the two won by Lee Shuckerow (Point Edward, CAN) assured him of the class title with 20 points. The J/70 class made a strong debut in Miami with 20 boats racing. In pole position with no finish worse than third to start the final day of the series, Briane Keane (Weston, Mass.) added two wins to his score line to take the inaugural BMSW class win with 13 points. THE MASSACHUSETTS-BASED NON-PROFIT JOINS SHAKE-A-LEG AND TEAM PARADISE AS BMSW’S CHARITIES OF CHOICE

ailing Heals, a non-profit organization which is dedicated to taking cancer patients and their caregivers out on the water for days of healing, was again this year named one of the “Charities of Record” for BACARDI Miami Sailing Week and its upcoming regatta partner Newport Sailing Week, for 2013. Event owner and organizer Gabriele Pedone of STUDIOMILANO explained why Sailing Heals, along with the other two charities Shake-a-Leg and Team Paradise—which both focus on sailing for the disabled—were chosen, “A carefree day on the water can have a very healing effect on people. In one way or another everyone’s life is touched by cancer, and we are pleased to help Sailing Heals foster new friendships and lifetime memories for Miamiarea residents who may be experiencing a health setback.” The much anticipated multi-class regatta was held in Coconut Grove from March 3rd to March 9th, 2013. On Sunday, March 10th, Sailing Heals along with several Host Captains from the Miami area took patients from a local hospital, along with family members, out for a great day of sailing, after enjoying a picnic lunch at Dinner Key Marina. One of the sailors hosting the sail, Deborah Schuman, who along with her boyfriend Geraldo Marques and his boat Tucano hosted VIP Guest Jose Jeri, had this to say about the experience: “Jose told us today was the happiest day he’s had in years! ixty five stunning classic and vintage yachts took part in the 26th Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, between April 18th and 23rd. Overall victory as well as first place in the Vintage Class, went to the 28-meter Sumurun, a Bermudan ketch launched in 1914 at the historic Fife yard in Fairlie, Scotland. Sumurun left Antigua with an Officine Panerai watch, which is the prize awarded to all overall winners of the various rounds on the Photos by Cory Silken 2013 | Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge calendar. Courtesy Panerai Victory in the Classic Class went to Stormvogel, a 22-meter ketch built in South Africa in 1961 and a joint design effort by two renowned pens, Van de Stadt Design of Holland and Englishman Laurent Giles. Stormvogel successfully fended off the advances of her closest rival, the 1957 Lone Fox, to the end. The Spirit of Tradition class for yachts recently built to a classic design was won by the WClass 76 Wild Horses (1998) after withstanding some very tough competition from the likes of Spirit of Rani, Farfarer and Aurelius. Other prizes went to the 13-metre Genesis (2003), which took a resounding victory in the Traditional Class having won all four races, and Petrana, a 15-meter built in Hong Kong in 1968, in the Classic GRP Class for fiberglass boats. The 1924 Fife schooner Adventuress, recently and superbly restored by Rockport Marine, won the Concours dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Elegance in which 33 yachts competed. T
he northern tip of Cape Cod, Massachussetts is famous for being somewhat of a shipwreck graveyard. Between Truro and Wellfleet alone there have been more than a thousand. Back in the day, according to www.mychatham.com nobody was surprised to hear the alarm when a storm struck. The locals would run to the beach but the surf would be too high for them to attempt a rescue. If passengers couldn’t be saved, the cargo often was. People would bring out their carts and horses and take what was there like coffee, cotton, tobacco etc. On December 27, 1872 The Frances, a 199 ft, three-

masted barque was heading to Boston from the Far East when it ran aground in a severe storm on the Truro shoreline. Carrying tin and sugar, this German vessel sailed right into a winter storm as it went around the cape. Although, the crew was rescued and some of the cargo was salvaged, captain Wilhelm Korting died a few days after the wreck. In the last 140 years, the Frances has surfaced thanks to low tides or after a strong storm. On November 12th, 2012, right after Hurricane Sandy, it once again emerged… “a ragged heap of iron, slimy with seaweed, 25 feet wide and about 20 feet from shore, “ says photographer Nancy Bloom who got the first glimpse. Mrs. Bloom, a professional photographer whose work has received honors at the New England Camera Club Council as well as the Photographic Society of America, was able to get a close look at its iron hull. “After the storm my husband John, who is Assistant Harbor Master in Truro, took a ride out to Head of the Meadow Beach to see if the beach suffered any erosion due to the storm. Minutes after looking at the shoreline, we noticed something protruding from the sand,” explains Mrs. Bloom who is also the official photographer of the Great Provincetown Schooner Regatta in Provincetown, MA as well as the Fishermen’s Cup. She took several photographs of the sight and, as soon as she got home, she did some research on what wreck it might be. “I searched the web looking for “shipwreck Head of the Meadow Beach, Truro” and discovered a book named Adventures of a Sea Hunter written by James Delgado.” Soon after she got in touch with him.

Renowned maritime archaeologist Dr. James Delgado is the current director of Maritime Heritage in the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries for the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, known as NOAA, and he oversees heritage programs and active research in the nation’s waters, as well as outreach and education on America’s underwater and marine heritage. He has explored such ships as the RMS Titanic, the discoveries of Carpathia, the ship that rescued Titanic’s survivors and the notorious “ghost ship” Mary Celeste as well as surveys of the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor. In the 80’s, Dr. Delgado participated in a national program called “Project Seamark” to document wrecks like the Frances. Project Seamark was a National Park Service initiative with the U.S. Navy in which Navy divers worked with NPS archaeologists on joint training exercises to document and study sunken ships and other underwater sites in National Parks and also in the Pacific. “We conducted a series of projects at Pearl Harbor, Bikini Atoll, Palau, the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and at Cape Cod” he explains. As the maritime historian of the National Park Service, Dr. Delgado participated in Seamark from 1987 to 1991 at the invitation of his colleagues in the Submerged Cultural Resources Unit (now the Submerged Resources Team) of the NPS. The project was the brainchild of Daniel Lenihan, then the chief of the submerged team. It was then that Dr. Delgado explored the Frances which at the time was completely underwater. “My dive was a lengthy inspection of the exposed remains in the surf and water. We swam along the side and through a hole on the starboard side and entered the hold,” explains Dr. Delgado. “We saw scattered ingots of tin and then turned and squeezed into the forecastle. There we found light filtering in through holes in the deck above and broken boards from the bunks, and then a half buried box or trunk,” he adds. “My colleague Larry Murphy put his hand in it to see what might be inside and came out with a crab firmly clutching his fingers as he bellowed through his regulator.” Frances was documented and mapped as part of the project. “Everything we saw and observed was left on the site, inside the shipwreck, just as we found it, to be reburied by the sand,” said Dr. Delgado who chronicled his encounter with the Frances in the book Adventures of a Sea Hunter. Dr. Delgado who is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a Fellow of the Explorer’s Club, is

He is also the host of the National Geographic International television series The Sea Hunters. “What strikes me, as one who has studied wrecks for decades, is when a wreck is as visible and accessible as Frances is.” says Dr. Delgado. “The dynamics of wrecks coming in close to shore is such that at times they are not destroyed but rather settle in and bury, more or less intact, whether they are made of wood or iron,” says Dr. Delgado. “Often times, such wrecks emerge after storms, reminders of otherwise forgotten or dimly remembered events, excite great interest, and then gradually disappear from view as the sand returns.” Acknowledgment: Yachting Times would like to thank photographer Nancy Bloom and maritime archaeologist Dr. James Delgado for their vital contribution to this article.

valed headroom. The master cabin amidship is a suite that makes the most of the available height and width. A new feature here is the double bed that opens out with a hydraulic mechanism to become just like a bed at home. This approach makes it much easier not only to stow personal belongings but also, and especially, to use them conveniently every day, without having to remove the bed to reach the lockers. After years of using the side windows, it seems only natural to be able to enjoy breathtaking views across the sea. This effect changes the way an important space is used; indeed, it means being able to use the master cabin even during the day, as if it were a room on the main deck. The night area is completed by the double room and the VIP suite at the bow. One bathroom is reserved for the master cabin, while a second opens off the passage and the VIP suite. But that is not all. In the living area, the precision layout of the available elements provides enhanced comfort, and the saloon features a Cshaped sofa with a roomy breakfast bar. The dinette table is now larger and can be dismantled by removing the central insert; the reversible backrest of the captain’s chair frees up a place at the table, which can comfortably seat six. And the improved electronics mean better sailing (with the Raymarine C95 and E125 systems) and more fun (with the 40” big screen and Bose entertainment system). The flybridge – at 14 square meters, one of the largest in its class – is a focal point for life on the waves. An attractive sun deck with a hard top (supported by the roll bar, lent a light touch in the form of a glass insert) can be opened up in the center with a soft sun awning to shade those on the flybridge at speeds of up to 25 knots. The swimming platform can hold 500-kg loads, like a top-of-the-range jet ski or a sizeable tender. Azimut 54 is 16.70 meters long, with a maximum beam of 4.95 meters; it has a variable dihedral hull shape with V angle at the stern of 12°; it is fitted with two MAN R6 engines generating 730 Hp for a top speed of 33 knots and a cruising speed of 28. Optional extras include the Easy Docking system and the Seakeeper stabilizer, which can reduce rolling by up to 80%.

ertram Yacht has recently celebrated some rather large milestones. In 2012 the company (since 1998 the only U.S. manufacturer in the Ferretti line) celebrated 50 years of building boats. Then, in May, 2012 Bertram Yacht held a press conference announcing the relocation of its production facility from Miami to a new stateof-the-art facility in Merritt Island, Florida.

great employees that have boat-building experience or can easily be taught boat-building skills; and it allows us to continue our history in the state of Florida,” Herndon added. In the midst of the move the company found that it was in possession of a 54-footer that was built for a client who realized it was too small, once it was time for him to take delivery. So he had Bertram build him another, bigger, boat. His original 54 is now for sale, on the books as a new yacht. It’s equipped with anything a serious angler would want on a boat. Although he opted out of adding the Mitsubishi ARG (Anti-Roll Gyro) system, the boat didn’t seem to miss the ARG when we took it out for a sea trial. Granted the seas were down only about a one-and-a-half feet high, a long-troughed swell was running, not very steep sided at that. The boat performed well. It took tight turns at speed very well and backed down without a whimper. The sound insulation is excellent. I could hear normal conversation in the accommodations at sea at speed. The interior option the original owner went for is the forward galley, with a two-stool breakfast bar and no forward glass window. Although the glass windshield is nice and lets copious amounts of brilliant sunlight in to bathe the saloon, I’m not so sure that it’s worth giving up all of that vertical storage. The engine choice was the largest available: Twin Caterpillar C32 Acert 1,700 horsepower, each engine. They give the vessel a top speed of 37 miles-per-hour. There’s still room in the machinery space to install a Mitsubishi ARG. The accommodations are spacious. There is a twin bunk cabin to port across from the master suite, which is to starboard. Both entrances are just off the companionway steps. The queen VIP is in the forepeak. The master suite features a 42-inch LED television located behind a mirror. When the TV is turned off it’s a mirror. Turn it on and you’re watching your favorite show—through the looking glass. The flybridge

hris-Craft’s latest entry into its vertical bow series of boats, the Carina 21 bow rider features a plumb bow recalling many of the boats built of wood by the company in the Golden Age of boating. And it retains three elements that define the brand’s signature: tumblehome, reverse transom and rounded sheer. As the press release states: “The Carina 21 embraces design cues from the brand’s original DNA and fluently speaks the language of speed and luxury.” And it does it splendidly, it defines both of these elements, especially in its exciting profile. There are also a myriad of standard features that will make this a desirable boat as a nimble runabout, classic yacht tender and luxury day boat suitable for watersports. The cockpit contains a hatch in the sole that accesses a locker that stores four skis. A pop-up ski-tow pylon is standard and is available immediately aft the cockpit seating. Side-byside helm and companion seats, which swivel, adjust fore-and-aft. Aft of them is a bench seat that seats three comfortably. The boat is approved for seven. That means that two will be riding up in the bow. For lounging at anchor there is a large sun pad area over the engine compartment with removable cushions to expose the teak engine hatch or walkover on the Heritage Edition. The Standard Edition Carina 21 is equipped with natural teak on the bow, a variety of gelcoat colors and a standard Mercury 5.0 MPI 260 HP Alpha engine that push this stand alone beauty to 50mph easily. Flush mounted natural teak is included on the swim platform cockpit sole, foot rests, engine hatch and accent rails on the Heritage Edition. While it isn’t needed for that purpose in the Carina 21, it will certainly protect the fiberglass from a bump on the nose, and it finishes the boat and looks cool too. Of the myriad of details, the company’s concern with final paint is one of the most serious. Chris-Craft employs a Dupont automotive polyurethane coating to achieve the high gloss it desires on the exterior surface of its vessels. This is a five-step process: First, a primer coat is sprayed over the gel coat. Polyurethane paint in the color desired by the customer is applied. Then three coats of clear coat are applied. After each clear coat, the surface is sanded and buffed in order to provide the hull and deck a

For the interior aboard the Carina 21, Chris-Craft is using a new vinyl material named Silvertex, which is manufactured by Spradling. The vinyl has the texture of fabric, setting Silvertex apart from other materials on the market. The vinyl is covered by Permablock3, a coating that was formulated specifically for the hospitality industry. It has superior U.V. protection, plus the material resists abrasion, fungus, mold and mildew. The material manufacturer claims that all manner of things can be easily washed off, including black felt-tipped pen, if caught quickly. Chris-Craft conducted its own tests of the material by smearing on suntan lotion, ketchup, mustard, grease and soda, then leaving it out in the sun to bake for a few hours. Silvertex passed the factory test. The next edition vertical bow series will debut in the summer of 2013 and will feature a closed-deck. hen a man tells you he’s the last of a dying breed and raises Clydesdales on a ranch, you might wonder who’s really watching the barn while also considering who this person really is, at his core. Since the dude on the ranch in question is Dick Lazzara, you probably know he is watching the barn….and the store. He’s one of the last yacht manufacturer/owners to design, engineer, build, sell and race both sailing and power yachts. As the patriarch of a third-generation family company, his sons, Joey, Tony and Richie are each niched in different disciplines. While Dick’s progeny and their cousins run the yacht-building company that he started with father, Vince, and brother, Brad, Lazzara is a proud papa for more than one reason. His Clydesdales are alive and kicking, too. His filly, Mama Belle, gave birth in 2008 to Georgia. “Ray Charles’ song was on when she was born,” Lazzara says of the baby foal’s namesake. The music wasn’t playing when Georgia’s older sibling, Heartbutt, was born. A white, heart-shaped birthmark and patch of hair on his rear end inspired his identity. The ranch and the horses are his hobby and refuge. “I lived a fast life for a lot of years, but being at the ranch is like the water in Key West,” he says. “It is so peaceful and quiet, out in the middle of nowhere, with the stars out at night.” Lazzara tiptoes through the tulips, too, the ones that the horses leave on the ground for him. Lazzara likes mowing pastures. They have a beginning, middle and end, so it’s the type of contained project, albeit 10 acres, that you can envision completing. It’s therapeutic. He enjoys the rural areas of Florida as much as the coastline. “I put on my overalls, get on the tractor and forget about the world out there,” says Lazzara. “I like working in my shop with my woodworking tools. I built my gazebo and shutters. I’m at that stage of my life right now.” The solitude of the ranch provides Lazzara with the opportunity to clear his head every day. It means an hour’s drive to his company’s Tampa headquarters at 6 a.m. He leaves at 4:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m., depending upon the traffic and the day’s duties and winds down on his ride home. “Dad’s the first one there in the morning and the last to leave at night,” says his son, Joey. “He leads by example.” Pride and dedication to the pursuit of perfection in mass pro-

Lazzara, 60, started sailing and fishing at age three on Lake Michigan and swapped snow shovels for sand at age nine when the family moved to St. Petersburg, Florida. Dick Lazzara grew up with industry icons, learning design purism from Olin Stephens, the execution of craftsmanship from Henry Hinckley, and brokerage from Dick Bertram. He raced sailboats in the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit (SORC) circuit, sailed one-designs and played football as a split end at the University of Florida. He loves the Bahamas, having spent much time at his father’s residence on Cat Cay. In 1971, Lazzara was drafted by the Coast Guard and served in the North Atlantic during the Vietnam War. He was assigned to the secret service in 1972 to a presidential support detail in Miami to protect President Nixon. Then he joined the family business, Gulfstar, building trawlers and motorsailers, in 1974. For a cruising boat, the Gulfstar was very good upwind. Today the Lazzara family is still renowned for striking a nice balance between design, function, quality and production at an affordable price: the key to successful mass production.

Gulfstar merged with Viking in 1987 and in 1991, Dick opened Lazzara Yachts with his father and his brother, Brad. Lazzara Yachts is still an innovator in design and manufacturing processes. The Lazzara Quad 75 is known for its joystick maneuverability and smart control systems power four Volvo Penta IPS 600 units with a counter-rotating forward facing propeller. The LSX 64, their latest introduction, is an open concept express yacht topping out at 35 knots. The split-level is one of the LSX’s attractive features, something Popa Vince did with his sailboats and trawlers for years, where you’re at the helm and look down into the galley. It’s kind of a New York loft look. “I never thought my Dad would ever go down that road, but he did,” says son, Joey. “It was very difficult to get him to go so dark at the beginning. The whole build was a contrast between dark and light. Now dark wood and light fabric is a hot trend.”
Life in the fast lane Lazzara’s son, Joey, joined the company after Dick had a horrific accident in 2001 while racing offshore powerboats. “It was a long, tough road for my family and they really hung together,” says Dick. “They didn’t know whether or not I would live for over a month (after the accident).” It’s hard to believe that a handsome man like Dick Lazzara hovered near death for a month or that he even suffered severe facial trauma. To the people who know him as a rancher, they’d be surprised to know he raced boats in a fast-paced lifestyle. He crashed at 90 miles per hour, resulting in life-threatening injuries, including a fractured sinus cavity. He was told to expect blindness within three years. His jaws were wired shut and he had seven titanium plates, an optical metal screen and over 400 stitches. Lazzara was fortunate to survive the accident and come back to the yachts that are his passion, the company that he has nurtured, and the family that he loves. He is a relaxed, calm man who’s slowed down on the ranch that literally keeps his feet on the ground, something that’s important for an executive traveling the world with million dollar yachts and wealthy people. Terra firma now provides the same serenity as the water, refreshing Lazzara’s brain with inspiration and innovative ideas for boats. “God only gave us so many days on earth,” he says. “The ones at sea don’t count against you.” | 52 | www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com

eunion Island, Indian Ocean. Late at night, a bus drives my colleagues and I from the airport of Saint-Denis to the harbor and we get dropped off on the pier, in front of the Marion Dufresne, a huge French ship that brings people to the French Southern Lands. I cannot wait to begin my first long journey on the Southern Ocean. Embarking on this boat and setting foot on those remote islands have been my dream for so long, We leave Reunion Island early in the morning. For more than a week, no land is in sight, but the trip is far from being boring. Other birders and I spend hours on the deck, observing and recording various species of seabirds. For most of us, this is the first and maybe only chance to see southern species of petrels, storm-petrels and prions. However, the observation of our first albatrosses is even more amazing. Wandering albatrosses are the biggest flying birds on earth and they fly just a few meters from

I am nostalgic but when I think that my turn will come soon, excitement takes over. After a few more days spent counting seabirds on the boat and learning more about the studies of the oceanographers onboard, we reach my final destination: the Kerguelen Islands where I will spend six months, as a field assistant

studying birds and marine mammals. We get off the Marion Dufresne to discover the capital Port-aux-Français, our new home. I have a few days to get to know the fifty people living here and become familiar with the place. Then it is time to get to work. There is a lot to do. From October to March is the best season to study most seabirds and marine mammals, since they come on land to mate and molt. The research program I am involved in has been implemented by a French laboratory known as the CNRS (Centre National pour la Recherche Scientifique) in Chizé. The French Polar Institute (IPEV) allows such programs to take place by providing them with the necessary logistical support. My goal is to gather data on the foraging ecology of gentoo penguins, Kerguelen shags, king and macaroni penguins by using different devices such as time-depth recorders, GPS, and ARGOS beacons. Luego de algunos días más de contar aves marinas en el barco y aprender más sobre los estudios de los oceanógrafos a bordo, hemos llegado: mi destino final, una isla francesa mucho más grande, donde pasaré seis meses como asistente de campo estudiando aves y mamíferos marinos. Descendemos del Marion Dufresne para descubrir la base de Port-aux-Français, nuestro nuevo hogar. Tengo un par de días para conocer a las cincuenta personas que se van de aquí y familiarizarme con el lugar. Luego es tiempo de ponerse a trabajar, hay mucho por hacer. De octubre a marzo es la mejor época para estudiar a la mayoría de las aves y los mamíferos marinos, porque vienen a tierra a aparearse y a mudar. From October to March is the best season to study most seabirds and marine mammals, since they come on land to mate and molt. The research program I am involved in has been implemented by a French laboratory known as the CNRS (Centre National pour la Recherche Scientifique) in Chizé.
Most of my work takes place in the Courbet Peninsula: Cape Cotter and its colonies of macaroni penguins, Ratmanoff and its huge colony of king penguins (one of the biggest on Earth), Cape Morne and Pointe Suzanne and their endemic Kerguelen shags’ colonies. Sometimes, I also get to work on the islands of the Gulf of Morbihan, where landscapes are quite different, but just as amazing. The work is interesting, but so is the social life on base. When we come back from our field sessions, which usually take us away from base camp for anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, feeling at home is important. It is also the occasion for us to enjoy the comfort “civilization” can bring us: internet to email our families and friends, telephone to get calls

Finally, at the end of March, I have to leave the island, after six months of fieldwork that flew by, in the biggest French protected area. Other people leave with me. There are scientists, PhD students, field assistants and logisticians who have come for what we call the summer “campaign”, when the workload is very important. Around fifty people, unlike us, will stay and winter in Kerguelen, in a smaller group to ensure the continuity of scientific programs. We wish them all good luck while we leave this special place to live new adventures! We, however, cannot help shedding a tear as we wave at them from the boat about to depart.

Understanding the French Southern and Antarctic Lands’ rich ecosystems

Kerguelen, Crozet, Amsterdam and Saint-Paul Islands all possess rich but fragile ecosystems. They host one of the most important bird biomass on earth and a number of endemic species; moreover, they are of considerable importance for some species of marine mammals which have to come on land to reproduce every year. Those territories are part of the RÊserve Naturelle Nationale Des Terres Australes Françaises, the biggest French protected area since 2006 and ought to be protected. Scientists thus need to understand the functioning of the ecosystems as well as the biology of local species. During the 20th century, permanent bases have been built on those districts to allow scientific research to be implemented on a long-term basis. Volunteers,
every year, overwinter to carry out research for different programs and answer different problematics. For example, the dynamic of population of introduced species (cats, rabbits, mice, domestic and mountain sheep, different plants...) is studied to find a way to regulate them so they stop being detrimental to local species. Ethology programs aim at understanding the behavior of local species of birds. Others seek to understand the impacts of global warming and human activities on populations of plants, insects and mammals. And other volunteers collect data on weather, atmospheric chemistry, oceanographic conditions and magnetic field to complete our knowledge on those ecosystems.

he Maldives is a long string of atolls stretching 600 nautical miles from north to south, midway between Africa and Southeast Asia. Despite being in the middle of nowhere, this remote archipelago has become one of the world’s most famous exotic holiday destinations. We sailed to the Maldives on our way across the Indian Ocean to make the first survey of the elusive sperm whales in these waters. On board the R/V “Odyssey”, our objective was to use the sperm whales as an indicator species to determine the degree of pollution in the world’s great oceans. Insignificant specks on a world map, these tiny islands are home to a teeming mass of humanity. Our landfall was Male, the main

island in the group, and where the majority of Maldivians live. Here we were able to reprovision, re-fuel, pick up more crew and get some rest. A fascinating place jostling with people, mainly Arabs, Africans and Indians, and with barely a square inch of unused land. Mosques and buildings, markets and houses, people and animals, all packed so closely together, and yet isolated from the rest of the world by this vast expanse of water. Life on land seems fairly hectic, but the breathtaking beauty of the underwater world surrounding these islands makes them special: crystal clear water and pristine reefs with a multitude of jewel-like fish. After three days in Male, we sailed north, heading out to sea. Hoping to survey the whole island group from north to south, we started along the east side of the archipelago. During the day it was easy to keep a lookout for whales, but towing a hydrophone 24 hours a day allowed us to listen and track whales within a 5 miles radius day and night. Being so close to the equator, the winds were generally light, so progress was slow. Nevertheless, after just 24 hrs we found our first sperm whale: a mid-size solitary male. Later that day, we were pleased to find a group of Risso’s dolphins, which was a good sign and made us feel optimistic. Since this was the first whale survey

in the area, we didn’t know what to expect. We sailed as far as the most northern atoll, before turning south along the western edge. Sperm whales are rarely found at depths of less than 1000 m, so we criss-crossed between 2,000 m and 3,000 m deep. The wind was never steady, blowing during the day, but at night it would die, forcing us to use our motor. Despite the engine noise, we could hear hundreds of dolphins communicating and foraging. Inquisitive and playful by nature, it was an unforgettable thrill to watch these magnificent animals so close to the boat, powering through the water, bodies illuminated by the phosphorescence in the sea, leaving a wake behind them like a comet in the sky. Days passed and we sailed through the archipelago under a growing moon. When it finally became full, the effect was breathtaking - the flat sea like a silver blanket endlessly shifting with the long slow rhythm of the swell. At these latitudes, you can see the stars from both hemispheres, so in the moonless nights that followed, an explosion of stars shone overhead - the Big Dipper and the Southern Cross simultaneously. A few days later we were excited to spot a fastswimming group of bottlenose whales. Rarely seen as individuals, it was an unimaginable treat to see a whole group.

Sin embargo, luego de tan solo 24 horas, encontramos al primer cachalote: un macho solitario de tamaño medio. Más tarde ese mismo día tuvimos el agrado de encontrar un grupo de calderones grises, una buena señal que nos llenó de optimismo. Dado que este era el primer censo de cachalotes en el área, no sabíamos qué esperar. Navegamos hasta el atolón más septentrional antes de dirigirnos hacia el sur a lo largo del extremo oeste. Los cachalotes raramente se encuentran a menos de 1.000 m, así que nos movimos entre los 2.000 m y 3.000 m de profundidad. Further south, while traveling very close to the reef of one of the atolls, the hydrophone picked up the song of a humpback whale, immobile in the shallows. We had the unique experience of hearing her song echoing in the deeper waters from an underwater canyon as if she was singing in a cave. We stopped the boat, everyone lost in thought as we just sat and listened, enjoying this rare underwater concert! A marvelous experience, but sadly we saw almost no whales in over a week. They had to be somewhere so we kept pressing south. Eventually, we came across a few Bryde’s whales near the One and a Half degree Channel, but still no sperm whales. Next day we passed the equator before rounding the southern-most island of the Maldives and started heading north again. We hadn’t made land since Male. The nightly motoring was using fuel and soon we would have to stop and re-fuel on one of the islands. Half way up the island group, we came across some fishermen fishing for tuna on their traditional boats called “dhonies”. They told us that we could find the much needed liquid on the island of Viligili. Coming into Viligili was like arriving in a hidden universe, an unexpected world in a remote atoll in the middle of a vast ocean. Visitors were rare, so our arrival was greeted with much curiosity and excitement. We went ashore and met with the chief who granted us permission to take on fuel. The town was an incredible maze of whitewashed walls with dirt streets, and a huge mosque rising up between the coconut palms. The scorching heat was almost unbearable, and the reflection from the houses was blinding! We moved the boat close to the fish factory, a Japanese state of the art facility where fresh fish is frozen for export to Asia. We were fascinated to get a good look at the long string of ‘dhonies’ tied up to the front of the plant. Having taken on 1000 liters of fuel, we quietly departed with just enough light to see our way through the coral reef. The sea, the gentle rocking of the boat, the mil-

lions of shining stars, the soft tropical breeze and the stillness of the night filled my soul. I thought of the ocean teeming with life under our keel, of life beneath the sea and all its creatures with all their secrets, of the magnificent whales and dolphins which make the ocean their home, of all the seamounts and underwater canyons, and the perfect balance it all possesses. I reflected on what us humans do to the sea, and felt helpless and insignificant. One morning, motoring on a flat calm sea, we started to come across large amounts of floating rubbish. During the entire twelve hours of daylight, we were horrified to see nothing but floating plastic in every direction, as far as the eye could see. Probably originating from Southeast Asia, this vast island of rubbish is carried along by the currents, eventually landing thousands of miles away on atolls such as the Maldives. To think of so many thousands of tons of non-biodegradable rubbish polluting the pristine coral reefs and beaches was heart breaking. Plastic is the number one killer of marine life. What are we doing to our oceans? A few days later, we came across a group of sperm whales at last. About fifteen of them traveling north. We sampled their blubber, photographed them and recorded their sounds underwater. We may not have seen many whales, but at least we found the sea around the Maldives teeming with other marine life. This alone was a very good finding. After three weeks of surveying their waters, we returned to Male to prepare for our next destination: Sri Lanka, the mecca for Blue Whales. Luego de tres semanas de estudiar sus aguas, regresamos a Male para preparar el viaje a nuestro próximo destino: Sri Lanka, la meca de la ballena azul.

iAIS Digital Yacht Free
This is the newest AIS plotter in the App Store and it’s by a UK company that seems to be putting out some pretty good onboard interface apps. AIS is great for anyone boating in crowded areas or for those curious about who’s out there. Any vessel that has a registered AIS device will show up with their name, vessel details, course, speed and direction which can be helpful when you’re in high-traffic anchorages or bays. Best Feature: iAIS also can be used as an overlay with iNavX. Now that’s handy!
Float Plan Big Tuna Apps $0.99
Every responsible boater knows that it’s always prudent to file a Float Plan before you depart on your trip no matter how long you expect to be out. This new app, which runs on most Apple & Android devices, will save you time due to the easy interface and ability to email a pre-filled plan to anyone you choose. Though, I found it a little clumsy in my test of the app, specifically when trying to check off selections in lists like Safety gear. One improvement would be to have a default save New Trip, so you don’t have to check that (something I didn’t see until it was too late!). Image on the right shows a sample floatplan that can be sent via email to your list.
WEATHER PocketGrib Nicko Brennan $5.99 It’s one thing to be able to get good weather info while you’re out there on your boat, but knowing how to interpret that info is an entirely different thing. With PocketGrib you can access, view and analyze global weather data (with a connection of course) and then display that info even when you’re offline.

See wind speed, direction, precip, air temp, waves, current, and forecasts. Grib data is supplied by NOAA’s GFS model and is updated 4 times per day or every 6 hours. Best feature: GRIB files can be downloaded to your PC via iTunes, which means that if you’re cruising with a personal forecaster service, you can view your Gribs using PocketGrib! Best Feature: This app is very well designed, easy to use and super fast.
Intellicast Boating for iPad WSI Corporation $4.99 It’s now easy to get the best weather info right on your chart with Intellicasts’ Boating for iPhone/iPad. Integrates NOAA nav charts with advanced meteorological data just like their website offers. Lots of overlay options from Radar to Satellite, Wind Speed to Temps, and NWS Marine Forecasts (Offshore) and Tides. Even track Hurricanes. Best Feature: Very handy and easy to see on the iPad’s retina display. Note: a cellular or WiFi connection is needed.

Whale Alert – Ship Strike Reduction for Right Whales EarthNC Free You may have noticed more news about whales trying to jump on boats or boats running into whales. As more of us venture out into their world, chances of running into them increase. Now there’s even an app for avoiding whales by the good folks at EarthNC (makers of Marine Charts with ActiveCaptain!). Whale Alert was designed to assist in the management of right whale conservation areas and to help reporting in shipping lanes in and around Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. Whale Alert can help reduce the likelihood of ships colliding with these endangered whales, which can injure or kill them. It is not meant to be used alone but to compliment existing protective measures. Whale Alert is the first mobile application to take advantage of the transmission of environmental data over the AIS protocol. The system takes DMA and real-time right whale observations and displays that data graphically, directly within the app.
