from the editor Hope you all enjoyed a nice summer in and around the water! In my case, it was a very special one as I was able to take my children to one of my favorite cruising grounds, the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, Spain. I hadn’t been there in several years, and since my eldest son was born in Mallorca, over 10 years ago, he was now proud to return for a visit to his homeland. On page 46 you may find an article on the Balearics I wrote many years ago while living there with him. We then flew to Italy where I attended Le Vele d’ Epoca a Napoli, a lovely classic & vintage yacht regatta sponsored by Officine Panerai for the first time. I was invited to follow the race from a spectator boat in the beautiful Bay of Naples. It was a true joy to watch the yachts racing with majestic Mt Vesuvius in the background… bellissimo! You may read about Le Vele d’ Epoca on page 18. I’d like to personally thank our readers who took the time to complete our survey, we truly appreciate your feedback and encouragement. The winner of the three-day stay in Treasure Cay Resort is Wendy Olsen from West Bend, WI. Congratulations Wendy, and hope you have a great time in the Abacos!

El mío fue muy especial ya que pude llevar a mis hijos a uno de mis destinos náuticos favoritos, las islas Baleares en el Mediterráneo, España. Hacía años que no las visitaba, y como mi hijo mayor nació en Mallorca hace ya 10 años, le dio gusto regresar a su isla natal. En la página 46 podrán encontrar una nota sobre las Baleares que escribí hace años mientras vivía allí con él. Luego volamos a Italia donde estuve en Le Vele d Epoca a Napoli, una encantadora regata clásica patrocinada por Oficina Panerai por primera vez. Fui invitada a seguir la regata desde una lancha en la magnífica Bahía de Nápoles, y fue un verdadero placer ver a los veleros navegando con el Monte Vesubio de fondo. S

ailboats from all over New England lined up for the start of the 42nd annual Figawi Sailboat Race from Hyannis to Nantucket, MA. Over 240 sailboats, along with several powerboats took part in this year’s race, which kicked off the Cape Cod and Nantucket sailing season. This annual weekend event, held each year on Memorial Day weekend, attracted over 3,000 sailors and visitors from around the world. For the past 27 years, Figawi Charities has supported hundreds of local and non-profit groups. This year Figawi teamed up with Holidays for Heroes, a Nantucket organization, and honored the Wounded Warriors Project to help soldiers who were harmed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Figawi is not just about camaraderie, winning and having fun, it’s about supporting good causes too!

T

he 21st Arey’s Pond Cat Gathering took place on Saturday, August 10, 2013. There were 94 registered participants with 86 starting on a beautiful summer day with perfect winds. It was an exciting day on Pleasant Bay, Orleans, MA, for both entrants and viewers as graceful catboats, with their sails full, sped from mark to mark and back to the finish line. John Hall took first place in “Air Supply” in the Arey’s Pond 16’ Lynx class. Bill and Allison Coleman took first place in “Alli Cat” in the Arey’s Pond 14’ Catboat class while Dean Meehan took 2nd place in the Traditional Sloop class with the Arey’s Pond 18’ Daysailer. A portion of the entry fees and donations from the Cat Gathering was distributed among the Friends of Pleasant Bay and the Harwich Conservation Trust’s effort to save 49 acres through the Pleasant Bay Woods Fund. Catboats, traditional gaff rigged and wooden boat owners are invited to join the 22nd Arey’s Pond Cat Gathering on Saturday, August 9, 2014, 1:00 PM start.

ringing together its signature combination of on-shore and on-thewater activities, the third edition of BACARDI® Newport Sailing Week presented by EFG Bank concluded with the 29th running of New England’s premiere one-design event – the Newport Regatta®. Sail Newport, Rhode Island’s Public Sailing Center, demonstrated its considerable logistical and race management skills in hosting the threeday event (July 12-14) that featured racing in 21 one-design classes: 2.4 Meter, 12 Meter, 49er, 505, A Cats, Byte CII, Etchells, Farr 30, F-18, J/22, J/24, J/70, Laser, Laser Radial, S Class, Star, Sunfish, Swan 42, Vanguard 15, Viper 640 and VX One. A staggering 148 races were run for the more than 260 boats that were competing on five courses on Narragansett Bay. Five countries (USA, CAN, GBR, GER and NZL) and 17 U.S. states were represented by the 873 registered sailors. Racing in the 17-strong J/24 fleet, local sailors Tim Healy and John Mollicone won their third consecutive Newport Regatta®. Newport’s Jim Richardson was successful in reclaiming the North American Farr 30 class title he last won in 2010. Winning the first eight races of the Byte CII series, 14-year-old Henry Marshall of Auburndale, Mass., won the Byte CII North American Championship at the conclusion of 11 races in a fleet of 15 boats. A seven-boat mixed fleet of sailors with disabilities and able-bodied competitors raced in the 2.4 Meter class’s debut appearance in the Newport Regatta. Britt Hall (Darien, Conn.) won the 10-race series with 16 points. Three other classes awarded major titles based on the weekend’s results: In the 505 class, Andrew Buttner (Westwood, Mass.) became East Coast Champion. Jamestown’s Phil and Wendy Lotz won in the Viper 640s and Ched Proctor (Southport, Conn.) became Viper 640 Atlantic Coast Champion. Local sailor Philip Hallowell also went home with a new title – VX One New England Champion – after he won the final two races of the five-race series that was sailed by seven boats. In addition to the on-the-water action at the Newport Regatta®, Bacardi Newport Sailing Week included a number of shore based activities that allowed the public to participate and experience the legendary Bacardi hospitality. A special exhibit of America’s Cup photography, “Champions on the Breeze,” featured the work of Rhode Island-based photographer Cory Silken. Bacardi partnered with both the Sunset

he Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge’s Neapolitan debut has ended in victory for Sirius and Bufeo Blanco. This was the first time in the Circuit’s nine-year history that the Florencebased haute horlogerie company sponsored Le Vele d’Epoca a Napoli, which is organized by the prestigious Reale Yacht Club Canottieri Savoia in collaboration with the Italian Navy Staff Sailing Office. A total of 34 yachts competed in all four races in good conditions with winds of around 10-12 knots. The racing was over mixed triangle and long coastal courses with passages all the way to the Scoglio del Vervece, a tiny rocky islet just off Massa Lubrense, or in the waters off the Rotonda Diaz on Naples’Via Caracciolo, casting off from and returning to the Bay of Pozzuoli. The final day’s racing was preceded by a Naval Parade that provided spectators ashore with the opportunity to admire the stunning classic and vintage fleet in its entirety. The two winning boats in the standings valid for the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge Trophy 2013 were Sirius (1937) in the Vintage category (yachts launched pre-1950) and Bufeo Blanco in the Classic (yachts launched between 1950 and 1976). Both took home an Officine Panerai watch as their prize. Built in the USA to a design by the legendary Sparkman & Stephens, Sirius is a New

York 32, a class penned in the 1930s as the official boat of the New York Yacht Club. Bufeo Blanco, on the other hand, is a Bermudan cutter designed and built in Liguria (Italy) in 1963 by Sangermani.

The other winning yachts in the various sub-categories in Le Vele d’Epoca a Napoli were: Manitou, the 1937 yawl on which President J.F. Kennedy did his sailing in the 1950s and 60s, in the Vintage Yacht with Seconds Per Mile over 15; the 1965 Chin Blu III in the Classic Yachts with Spm (Seconds per mile) under 15 and, lastly, Stella Polare, the Italian Navy’s historic yawl, also built in 1965, which took first place in the Classic Yachts with Spm over 15. Victory in Friday’s long race also won Stella Polare the Admiral Angelo Lattarulo Trophy, named in honor of a very active supporter and frequenter of classic sailing regattas. After a busy three rounds in June (Les Voiles d’Antibes, Argentario Sailing Week and Le Vele d’Epoca a Napoli), the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge continued in August with a call to Menorca (X Copa del Rey, Spain, 27th-31st August) in the build-up to the season grand finale at Cannes on the Côte d’Azur to decide the official Mediterranean Circuit winners for 2013. www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com | 19 |

he Ferrretti 960 is yet another outstanding result of the close cooperation between Studio Zuccon International Project, which designs Ferretti Yachts’s entire range, AYTD – Advanced Yacht Technology & Design, and Ferretti Group’s team of engineers, architects and designers. This new yacht preserves the hull design and waterlines of the previous flagship, the Ferretti 881 - one of the most successful models for the brand - while developing it further, thereby becoming the latter’s legitimate heir. Thanks to its 29.20-metre overall length and 23.98-metre hull length, the new flagship can be managed as a pleasure boat, while offering impressive habitability and comfort compared to other models in its class. Ferretti 960 makes the most of the layout concepts currently found even on larger models in its class: indeed, the new flagship is Ferretti Yachts’s first planing yacht boasting the master cabin forward, on the main deck, and as many as four guest cabins, all equally sized and with equivalent furnishings and fittings, located on the lower deck. The layout - of which alternative versions will be available so as to meet the needs of the various international markets on which the Group is currently present - also features three crew

The Salon. The glazed door of the cockpit - electrically driven upon request - leads to the main deck interiors, whose layout stands out, first and foremost, for a large open space salon divided into the living area and the dining area. Oak wood has been used for all furniture and furnishings, with details in walnut stained oak wood, like the window frames, with a courtesy backlight, and the shelves hanging above the floor units. When accessing the salon, a bar unit with icemaker and a small bottle rack can be found on starboard. Long, uninterrupted glazing grants a wonderful view on the sea, which is even more striking in the central part on both broadsides, between the sofa and the dining area, thanks to the lowered gunwales. Moreover, two full-height windows have been inserted along the broadsides; upon request these can be replaced by sliding glazed doors connecting the interiors to the sidedecks. To starboard stands a unit with the hiding-TV-set, which can fit a screen up to 55” wide. Opposite are a large U-shaped sofa by Poltrona Frau and a smoke-shade table by B&B. The dining room, signed by Bonaldo and characterised by a glass top and a painted metal base, can be extended to seat up to 12 guests. The Master Cabin. The master cabin has been conceived to ensure the utmost privacy end comfort, thanks to the flawless noiselessness obtained by installing a series of multi-layer soundproofing bulwarks that divide it from the galley. The Galley. The galley is located forward to port. Access to the galley can also be gained from the salon and through an external door along the port broadside. Signed by Ernestomeda, it is in lacquered wood with white quartz work top and features a service

Flybridge, Helm Station and Outdoor Areas. Access to the spacious flybridge is gained via the cockpit staircase and from the helm station located on the mezzanine floor. The outdoor areas on the upper deck are even larger thanks to the possibility to store the tender in the garage under the cockpit and are now entirely devoted to relaxation and leisure. However, upon request, a davit can been installed on the raised fibreglass basement where, in the standard version, life rafts are normally stored. On the left-hand side of the flybridge is the helm station, furnished with an electricallyadjustable height pilot seat. The aft sundeck can be fitted with a Jacuzzi tub. The whole area is sheltered by a hard top with a central opening section. The aft area, entirely surrounded by handrails, can be fitted with free-standing seats. The helm station, on the main deck, is connected to the flybridge by a central glass hatch; it is very spacious and fitted with a large number of peaks and bookshelves above the stairs coming from the main deck; the glass windshield offers the captain the best possible visibility. The forward outdoor area on the main deck features two large anchor chain peaks and is furnished with two sofas with large storage compartments under the seat, separated by a ladder leading to the wide forward sundeck, on the deckhouse. Engine Room and Propulsion. Ferretti Yachts’s first CE-certified 96-footer, the brand’s new flagship, can be fitted with three different sets of MTU engines. The standard version has two 16V 2000 M84, 2218 mhp engines allowing it to reach a maximum speed of 27.5 knots and a cruising speed of 24 knots.

oft. Inviting. Comforting. That’s what everyone at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show said as Ocean Alexander unveiled its first megayacht, created in a new strategic partnership with designer Evan Marshall and builder Christensen Shipyard. At 121.2 feet and a beam over 25 feet, the OA 120 is a vast leap for Ocean Alexander, who produced smaller, production boats under 80 feet at their factories in Taiwan and Shang Hai for decades. With a commitment to quality, Ocean Alexander is concerned with its brand being taken seriously by yachtsmen, and chose to collaborate with seasoned builder Christensen for its foray into large yachts. “The timing was right,” says Richard Allender of Ocean Alexander. “It was good for both companies. There were synergies to be had. For Christensen, we brought business and more purchasing power. They sourced things from Asia that we could go direct with the Asian price.” Allender says there’s a pedigree issue with OA not having built a large custom yacht before. “A few customers said you might have a problem marketing [a yacht this size], it’s a giant leap”, says Johnny Chueh, president of Ocean Alexander. “But there is no learning curve for us with the customer in this | 32 | www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com

These are two well known brands coming together to build a boat that stretches the limits of both companies.” Designer Evan Marshall brought a new look to appeal to a broader clientele and the European market. Adorned in black walnut and maple in a satin finish with fabrics in muted earth tones, the OA 120 has a slightly masculine feel. The wide hull and superstructure accommodates five staterooms with large, vertical portholes and ample dining and gathering areas. The exterior is sleek and the interior look is contemporary but clean, with a full-beam deck master stateroom, a large eat-in galley, formal dining, and an attractive wheelhouse with walkaround leather settee and a captain’s cabin. Large picture windows bring plenty of natural light into the salon, while low-profile furnishings and clean joinery provide a sense of open space. The OA 120 offers a full beam master suite that includes his and hers toilets as well as separate spa tub and shower. The styling is modern without being radical.

With ample storage, the OA 120 is set up for easy charter with three to seven crew. With a 3,000 nautical mile range, the yacht’s large sundeck offers panoramic views, a spa tub and plenty of sunning space, as well as a covered dining area and a garage large enough for a nearly 16 foot tender with an integrated deck crane with a 3,500 pound lift capability. “I hope Ocean Alexander becomes more than just the product” Chueh says. “A brand can’t hinge on product. A brand should be able to stand alone. How much were we able to provide in a 120? Well, it feels more like 130.”

ollowing in your father’s footsteps can be a daunting task. At the age of 25, Johnny Chueh took over the reins of Ocean Alexander, the company that his father, Alex, founded. But Johnny’s steering it on a new course. Calmly and confidently, the boat-building scion is celebrating Ocean Alexander’s 35 years of yachting dreams by collaborating with seasoned builder Christensen for the company’s first megayacht. Age: 39. Favorite cruising grounds: “Sydney Harbor. I will always have a special affinity for Sydney Harbor, where I learned to sail with my father when I was 10 years old. We would hop to the Sydney Opera House on the boat.” Even though Chueh’s father owned boat-builder Ocean Alexander, a young Johnny was not allowed to cruise Taiwanese waters, which were heavily restricted for recreational boaters. “It was a chicken and egg infrastructure,” Chueh says of consumer boating in Taiwan, which was legalized about 10 years ago. Yachting Times staff recently went on location in Italy to Sangermani’s headquarters and soaked in the aura of this legendary yard that began in the late 1800’s. Now in its fourth generation of family ownership and management, the yard initially achieved notoriety with a gold medal at a prestigious Montecatini yachting event in 1906. The family’s passionate racing and shipbuilding tradition continued gathering honors in many regattas as the company expanded production facilities across Italy, always increasing the size of their vessels, pleasure and racing craft. After WWII, Cantieri de Sangermani found its location in Via Devoto in the town of Lavagna, where it operates today. Royalty and bourgeois requested their yachts to be built by Sangermani. Guia 2000, a German Frer’s design built in 1979, won the Giraglia in 1979 and 1983, and was Mediterranean champion for two consecutive years.

Since 1978, construction of hulls using advanced composite materials began at the Lavagna yard to increase vessel speed and structural rigidity. Exotics like epoxy resins, vacuum bagging, carbon fiber, aluminum honeycomb, Kevlar, Nomex, maintained hull strength but drastically reduced weight and thickness. Practically any task can be carried out in the workshops of Cantieri Sangermani, and the shipyard refits and restores many of its own launches. Classic yachts naturally have different requirements than new builds requiring planking replacements, polished brass elements, special hand-finished interiors or re-caulking of the entire teak deck. Original molds for casting of brass components made years ago are preserved at the yard so that any component can be created from the original

t´s a sunny and warm spring afternoon, and I´m sailing with my husband and our twoyear old son towards the Island of Menorca. We are coming from Mallorca- the largest of the four Balearic Islands- only 25 miles away. Though much less mountainous than its neighbor, Menorca does take pride in her rugged and dramatic coastline with sea cliffs that predominate and thus add beauty to the scenery. Here and there small CALAS (coves) chiselled in the rocky shore offer good anchoring and some charming tiny beaches. We sail past Isla del Aire and its tall lighthouse, on our approach to Mahón where a big transmediterranean Ferry is leaving the harbor. Mahón harbor is a commercial port and we are glad to be watching this vessel pass by in open waters, as our yacht doesn´t have an engine and it can be difficult to get out of the way of a big ship when only carrying sail. We enter Puerto de Mahón on a NW course leaving the high peninsula of La Fortaleza de La Mola- a XIX century military fortress- to starboard and the low rocky-cliffed Punta de San Carlos to port. We slowly sail into this magnificent natural harbor, the second biggest in the world after Pearl Harbor. Thanks to its protected waters and its strategic location in the middle of the Mediterranean sea, Mahón has been a very coveted trophy, and its history has a long list of conquering tribes and nations that have followed one another from the dwelling of times. Among them, the Romans conquered Menorca in the II century BC, the Muslims in the IX century AC,

na soleada tarde de primavera parto a vela desde Mallorca, acompañada de mi marido y mi hijo de dos años hacia la isla de Menorca, a unas 25 millas de distancia. Aunque mucho menos montañosa que su vecina Mallorca, Menorca cuenta con una costa repleta de acantilados que embellecen su paisaje. Las preciosas calas de su rocoso litoral ofrecen buenos fondeaderos y hermosas playas. Pasamos por Isla del Aire y su gran faro al acercarnos a la bahía de Mahón. Nos adentramos al puerto de Mahón por el noroeste dejando la alta península de La Fortaleza de La Mola- una fortaleza militar del siglo XIX por estribor y la Punta de San Carlos hacia babor. Navegamos hacia este magnífico puerto natural, el segundo más grande del mundo después de Pearl Harbor. Menorca fue un trofeo muy codiciado gracias a sus puertos protegidos y a su ubicación en el medio del mar mediterráneo. Numerosas tribus y naciones la han conquistado a lo largo de los siglos. Entre otros están los romanos que lo hicieron en el siglo II a.C., los musulmanes en el siglo IX a.C., la corona de Aragón en el siglo XIII, y durante el siglo XVIII la isla formó parte de la corona británica antes de volver a mano de los españoles. Por mi parte, descubrí Menorca a través de las apasionantes novelas históricas de Patrick O’Brian. Leí casi todas sus aventuras de Aubrey y Maturin que tuvieron lugar en Mahón en el siglo XVIII. the Crown of Aragon in the XIII century, and during most of the XVIII century the island was under British sovereignty, before returning once again to Spanish hands. I first heard about Menorca when I discovered Patrick O´Brian and his great British Navy historical novels. I read most of his Aubrey & Maturin adventures, some of which take place in XVIII century Mahón. And now, sailing our tiny yacht into this beautiful harbour, I feel as if sailing into one of O’ Brian’s books. This feeling will linger while wandering around its cobble stone streets and watching so many bow and sash windows in the old houses. There are some traditions that still remain from the British occupation such as distilling gin, and some English words have become part of the menorquí language like xoc for chalk and escru for screw, for example. From the sea, Puerto de Mahón looks spectacular, with a long winding road by the water along which stand dozens of ancient two and threestory houses, now well restored and turned into pubs, restaurants, boutiques, and souvenir shops. And, just across the street, hundreds of luxury yachts, small powerboats, local and fishing boats berthed stern-along the quay. High up on the cliff, Mahón town lies, with a few church steeples rising above the red-

We would later find out what a charming experience it is to stroll around Mahón walking along its narrow streets and virtually nonexistent pavements, seeing old houses huddled together to protect themselves from the strong winter north wind. We now sail all the way into the 3 mile long harbor and then berth at the Club Marítimo de Mahón. A good way to discover more about the island is to pay a visit to the museum of Menorca, lodged in the beautifully restored convent adjacent to the San Francisco Church. This museum covers the history of the island from the pre-talayotic culture of the Bronze Age until the XX century. A favorite topic of ours is the chapter dedicated to local shipbuilding & shipwrights, along with the display of XIX century shipwright tools and a local wooden dinghy. The building of ships is a very ancient activity in Menorca. But it wasn´t until the XVIII century that this trade reached its greatest heights with the construction of large ships, especially in the Port of Mahón. Private shipbuilding firms were highly successful during the XIX century, as well. But from the beginning of the XX century onwards, the local shipwright´s trade has been limited to the building and repair of small fishing boats and pleasure craft. On the western tip of Menorca is Ciutadela, a historic showpiece well worth the visit. Ancient, aristocratic and deliciously Mediterranean, Ciudadela was the island´s capital till the British moved it to Mahón during the XVIII century. During our stay on the island a surprising natural disaster takes place: the feared “rissaga”. A sudden and violent tidedifference, formed by a strong and persistent SW wind blowing during full moon. This time, a 6-meter wave washed into Ciudadela

Puerto de Ciudadela is an attractive natural harbor formed by a long narrow “cala” that leads to a small harbor surrounded by ancient quays.

Harbor, sinking 30 boats and damaging over a hundred others along its way. Luckily, there were no human casualties as the “rissaga” hit the harbor very late at night. It is only experienced here, and we were told this was the strongest one in over 20 years. Walking along its seaside promenade, we come across an old tower, Torre de San Nicolás. Now restored and turned into a museum, it tells the stories of the conquest of Menorca by the Aragonese in 1287, and the subsequent sale of all Muslim inhabitants as slaves as well as the resettling of the Island by loyal Spaniards. Also, the bloody assault led by Turkish pirate Barbarrossa in 1558, who led siege to the town and then burned it and killed over 5,000 of its Spanish inhabitants. Tough times old times… Before we realize it, the first summer months have already flown by and we need to sail back to Mallorca to take part in the Trofeo Almirante Conde de Barcelona. This Classic and Vintage Yachts Regatta takes place every year by mid-August in Palma de Mallorca’s Bay and is an event not to be missed! ontinuing the first survey of the world’s marine mammals, we left the Chagos Islands far behind as the SE trade winds carried us swiftly across the Indian Ocean towards the Seychelles. Sweet tropical nights with full sails and long sunny days with cumulus clouds billowing across the skies ahead. Using charts compiled by the old Yankee whalers of the 1880’s, we could only estimate where we might find the whales. Most of the ones we’d found had been near the islands, but as we crossed the open ocean we didn’t hear a single whale on the hydrophone. Our destination was Port Victoria in the island of Mahe, the main island of the Seychelles. As the orange threads of dawn crept across the sky, the dark shapes of land grew out of the horizon, a welcome sight after days at sea. This capital city still retained its air of colonialism with its old wooden buildings, an open market, busy streets and an unusual mixture of people who spoke in French. After a few days of rest and a good look around the island, we headed back out to sea.

ontinuando con el primer censo de la vida marítima en todo el mundo, dejamos atrás las Islas Chagos, mientras los vientos alisios SE nos llevaron velozmente por el océano Indico hacia las Seychelles. Dulces noches tropicales a toda vela y largos días soleados con turgentes nubes cúmulos en el cielo. Utilizando antiguas cartas de navegación compiladas por balleneros Yankee del 1880, no podíamos más que estimar dónde podríamos encontrar a estas criaturas. La mayoría de las ballenas que encontramos se encontraban cerca de las islas, pero atravesando mar abierto, no escuchábamos ni una en el hidrófono. Nuestro destino era Port Victoria en la isla de Mahe, la isla principal de las Seychelles. It was a difficult few days as we followed the wake of the dissipating cyclone and although the wind had dropped considerably, the sea was still rough and unyielding. We sailed north towards Denis Island and onto the open sea. There’d been a recent sighting of an enormous white male sperm whale in the north of the archipelago. Everyone was on deck, all eyes scanning the horizon hoping to catch a glimpse of this rare creature, but sadly there was no sign of it. The ground swell stayed with us for a couple of days making it difficult to work. We made slow progress along the western edge of the Seychelles bank but despite the help of the hydrophone, days slipped by with no sign of a whale. At last we found a group of whales on the north and west of ‘Banc Africans’, the team was ecstatic. It was our first sighting in almost two months. We tracked them for days, observing, photographing and filming them as well as taking blubber samples. After a few days, we began to recognize individual ones and felt the beginning of an attachment to the group, as they became more relaxed in our company and allowed us to move amongst them. The last day dawned and for the first time in our presence, the whole group of sperm

whales surfaced and stayed up socializing and swimming slowly downwind. In perfect formation, clicking gently to each other, they were carried along on the ocean swell. Enchanted by this unusual spectacle, we drifted alongside the group for a couple of hours, admiring these enormous giants in their natural habitat before we turned the boat south and left them in peace. We surveyed Les Amirates down to Alphonse Island but no sign of whales. That’s just how it goes, they can be with you for days, but once you move on, they slide down into the abyss, leaving nothing but an eerie silence on the hydrophone. As a research vessel, we were granted permission to visit the remote and protected island of Aldabra, which lies NW of Madagascar, off the coast of Tanzania in east Africa. Aldabra is a rare jewel, isolated and wild. Such isolation has produced some unique species of plants and animals. It also holds the largest population of giant tortoises in the world. This island is an unimaginably beautiful coral atoll with a large central lagoon, and its treasures have been protected by the Seychelles government for over 40 years. A team of rangers live here year-round to ensure that nobody lands without an official permit. To reach Aldabra we had to sail SW for several hundred miles. There were signs that another cyclone was gathering momentum nearby, so we decided to sail NE to avoid its estimated

path. We made the right choice, the cyclone passed south of us and soon after we were able to continue on our way towards Aldabra. The rangers gave us a warm welcome and were keen to show us the atoll. The first day was spent observing the giant tortoises, a far greater population than that of the Galapagos. Moving over the coral searching for food, as the heat from the midday sun increases, they seek shelter in the shade of the palm trees and renew their search for food in the late afternoon. The rangers ensure that the whole atoll is protected from the ravages of poachers, and that night we were lucky enough to see several green turtles crawling up the beach to lay their eggs. Each turtle lays around 150 eggs, and after 2 months of incubation in the warm sand, the baby turtles hatch and make a mad dash for the open sea. Those which make it to the sea, and survive to adulthood, will return to the same beach years later to lay their own eggs. The terrain is rough and inhospitable, but nesting amongst the mangrove trees we saw an enormous colony of frigate birds. There were thousands of them, the males displaying their colorful red throats to attract the females. The lack of human intervention is self-evident as life in this wild paradise flourishes without

restraint. On land there is no fresh water and few predators, in the water, the untouched natural world moves into another dimension. The absence of fishing has allowed the fish to reach their natural proportions - familiar species, but bigger than we’d ever seen before. Giant groupers, snappers, reef fish, sharks and an unimaginable array of corals bursting with life all around us. What a privilege to witness the underwater world in its true natural balance. Sadly, sites such as these are rare and face an ever-increasing threat from pollution, over-fishing and coral bleaching. On our last evening, we stood in the water at high tide and watched a myriad of black tip sharks patrolling the shallows just below the research station. One of the guards took the remains of our fish supper and threw it into the water. The ensuing feeding frenzy was impressive as small sharks dashed towards us from all around, thrashing the water, swimming amongst us. Fortunately they were more interested in the fish heads than our legs! The next day we started the long sail back to Mahe, carrying with us unforgettable visions of Aldabra. Chuck Connelly gained renown in the 1980s, and his monumental work entitled “Bridge to Nowhere” amazed millions of movie-goers when it was pictured in the 1989 film, New York Stories

W

e may not know how to define what an artist is, exactly, but when we see one of Chuck Connelly’s paintings, we instantly know that we are in the presence of a true artist’s work. Born in 1955, this Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native first gained renown in the 1980s. His prolific body of work spans a wide variety of subjects and his neo-expressionist style prompted one critic to describe it as “expressionist without angst.” Connelly himself has been dubbed “Van Gogh reincarnate.” Some of his paintings leave those who see them with mouths agape. Bridge to Nowhere (1988), a 93” x 216” (2.36 x 5.48meter) canvas that hangs today in Arizona’s Tucson Museum of Art, was seen by millions of amazed movie-goers in the 1989 film New York Stories—the first segment of which, directed by Martin Scorsese and entitled Life Lessons, tells the story of a troubled artist (played by Nick Nolte) and his relationship with his young and beautiful student (Rosanna Arquette). According to Connelly, this work “is in reference to a bridge in Pittsburgh and alludes to a timeline of the history of civilization.” In preparing to play the role of his fictional character—artist Lionel Dobie—Nick Nolte based his portrayal directly on Chuck Connelly and the artist’s fiery temperament. An admirer of the painter in real life, Nolte acquired one of Connelly’s works (Raising of the Spirits, 1988), and hung it in his Malibu, California home. When, in October of 2008, Nolte’s house caught fire, the painting wasn’t completely destroyed, but it suffered serious damage. Connelly and his team of assistants restored the painting in Nolte’s presence. Or perhaps better said: Connelly painted the work again. This curious episode in the world of modern art was registered on film for the Web series entitled Art at Will, presented by Flynn Helper and entitled “From the Ashes…”

El cuadro en cuestión, según Connelly, “se refiere a un puente situado en Pittsburgh, y alude a una línea temporal de la historia de la civilización”. Para ponerse en la piel del artista, llamado Lionel Dobie en la ficción, Nick Nolte se basó directamente en el fogoso temperamento de Chuck Connelly. Chuck Connelly studied at Philadelphia’s Tyler School of Art. He was the 1999 recipient of the Gottlieb Foundation Grant, awarded to “mature, creative painters and sculptors.” The personality and genius of the artist were the subject of a 2008 Emmy-winning HBO documentary called The Art of Failure: Chuck Connelly Not for Sale (produced and directed by Jeff Stimmel). The film recounts Connelly’s economic vicissitudes—strictly economic, since his talent has remained unquestionable— following that peak decade of the 1980s, in which his works sold for millions of dollars, and portrays his eagerness for a muchdeserved comeback, which even led him to hire a young actor to play the part of a fictitious painter—Fred Scaboda—with the aim of once again sparking the avid interest of galleries and marchands. Even as the reader is perusing the paintings that grace these pages, the ever undiminished talent of Chuck Connelly is preparing for a counterattack…
