The Transat Jacques Vabré celebrated its 11th edition in 2013

The Transat Jacques Vabré is a double handed race that starts in Le Havre, France, and follows the coffee route across the Atlantic. This key sailing and sporting event is synonymous with its start city: Le Havre. Over the years and editions, the French port has built strong links with the sailors, and developed a new and invigorating infrastructure around the old docks, reaffirming its commitment as a real maritime city. Itajaí is the new destination in Brazil. Located in the south of Brazil in the state of Santa Catarina, Itajaí is the main fishing port in Brazil and the country‘s second exporting port. Race start was on November 3rd, 2013. Four classes took part in this 11th edition: • MOD70 - The return of grand prix multihulls • IMOCA - The winner of the Vendée Globe on the starting line (MACIF). A dozen IMOCA competed. • Multi50s - 7 Multi 50 took part in the race • CLASS40 - Class 40 forms the biggest class in the race: some 25 Class 40’s competed. www.transat-jacques-vabre.com

hroughout its recorded history, dating from the early 17th century when the Pilgrims first landed in the New World on Provincetown’s shores, Provincetown Harbor has maintained a prominent role in American maritime history as a leading commercial fishing port. In the mid to late 19th century, at the peak of the commercial fishing trade in New England, Provincetown harbored as many as 100, 90-ton Schooners and 700 ships. By the mid-1850’s, the town was responsible for three times the commercial catch of any other town and harbor on Cape Cod. The Great Provincetown Schooner Regatta (GPSR) is recognized as a premier historical, educational and competitive event that appeals to a unique and wide ranging demographic of visitors and local residents. It brings attention to the importance of

Schooners, as the fastest vessels of their time, in the unique cultural and economic history in America. The Regatta supports and celebrates the New England maritime heritage. The races include historic Schooners and Catboats as well as modern sailing vessels that participate in PHRF handicapped and One-Design competitions. The Great Provincetown Schooner Regatta races are organized with expertise supplied by the Provincetown Yacht Club, one of the oldest yacht clubs in America. The Provincetown Yacht Club was started in 1867 with the help of members of the prestigious New York Yacht Club who loved to race in Provincetown’s magnificent harbor. The Pilot Schooner Virginia and Schooner Bay Lady II maneuver during the pre-start as some of the small yachts enjoy the view alongside. The Long Point Schooner & Yacht Race, features large and small schooners sharing a course with private yachts in the 20-45 feet range providing a rather unique experience for a small boat captain.

The Future of Racing is Here – A look back at the 34th America’s Cup Race. By/Por Nancy Birnbaum

ou may have heard… team Oracle USA beat the Kiwis (team Emirates) after an astounding comeback, winning 11 races to New Zealand’s 8 in the 34th America’s Cup. Though they’ve called it “the greatest comeback in sports history,” the press has had some negative responses to Oracle’s victory along with a sea of speculation. The longest-running international sports event in the world has always proven to be a tough nut to crack. And in the end, team Captain, Jimmy Spithill steered Oracle’s 72-foot catamaran across the finish line in the final winner-take-all Race 19 on San Francisco Bay just 44 seconds ahead of Emirates team New Zealand. It was not without some controversy and hot debate over what was behind the sudden jump in speed and handling beginning with Race 11. The speculation centered on some special device that allowed the catamaran to foil more effectively. Rumors floated in the Kiwi press that team Oracle had sent to New Zealand for a new ‘Stability Augmentation System’ (SAS) nicknamed “Herbie”, similar to those used on aircraft. They speculated that Oracle founder, billionaire Larry Ellison, had spent a couple of million dollars on such a system and had sent 10 Kiwi boatbuilders back to San Francisco to install it. Oracle Team USA general manager Grant Simmer told Sailing World, “We made no changes in that regard.” And, “The only people who came from Core Composites were a couple of managers who were always coming to see the event. We didn’t increase our workforce at all during the Cup.” But what exactly did cause the Oracle boat to suddenly surge ahead mid-regatta? According to Yachting World’s Matthew Sheahan, there were a number of modifications

to Spithill’s machine – the biggest being to the T-foils on Oracle’s rudders. “This was one of the biggest performance enhancing changes,” said Sheahan. Other improvements included raking the mast further aft to improve her balance, and removing the bowsprit for more breezy days on the racecourse. Yet Simmers’ disagrees. “There was nothing that we physically did—no physical changes—it was just technique changes that improved our tacking.” Depending on whom you asked, fans and spectators alike agreed that the spectacle was worth watching. The Kiwis came in droves to San Francisco’s America’s Cup Park and those watching the fantastic television coverage on Oracles’ YouTube Channel, were all enthusiastic supporters. A common theme resulted from my rather unscientific random polling of the spectators – a simple request to return the America’s Cup back to the realm of the average sailor. Perhaps racing the new high-tech catamarans, while admittedly fun to watch, are just a little bit beyond the reach of most sailors. Though most likely, the sport will continue to evolve along with the available technology and there’s not much we average sailors can do about that. It’s still up to the guys with the most money to spend. Like Bob Oatley, for example…

The Next Cup Look for the 35th America’s Cup to be held in 2017 with Australia’s Hamilton Island Yacht Club as the official Challenger of Record. So far, a few key personnel have already been put in place including Olympic gold medalist Tom Slingsby who served as strategist on the Oracle Team USA boat. Slingsby has already been in discussions with Sandy Oatley who, with his billionaire father, winemaker Bob Oatley, is heading up the Australian challenge. What they will be sailing on is anyone’s guess.

uilt exclusively for Vicem’s owner, the 107-footer named MONI is its flagship yacht. Vicem proudly continues to utilize traditional boat building methods but with a contemporary twist. All the Vicem Vintage Line yachts are built with the coldmolded process. This operation simply involves layers of thin veneers, oriented at different angles, to be glued up over a mold. The glue in this case is a specially formulated epoxy resin. The marriage of engineered wood with formulated resins yields a hull that is much lighter, much stronger and more durable than a traditionally built boat. It also leaves the wood waterproof making it resistant to water intrusion. When it’s done right, like at the Vicem facility, the wood won’t present problems in the future. Except for the teak planked decks -including the swim platformall of the exterior surfaces are painted providing ease of maintenance. The beautiful interiors are in sapele wood from Africa and mahogany from South America, as you will see once you step into the main salon.

The combination of these woods adds to the richness of the different hues making the spaces warm and inviting. There was an incredible amount of thought that went into those spaces, they are simply splendid. Forward, a dining area features a gorgeous custom made table for 10 that can be expanded to seat 12. The forward bulkhead includes storage for the china and stemware. The galley, with a two-seat breakfast bar with appliances by Gaggenau, is to port and forward of the dining area. Across the hallway from the galley are a day head and the stairway to the accommodations on the lower deck, the pilothouse is forward and takes up the full width of the coach house. Included there are a navigation desk and also an L-shaped settee to port to accommodate any observers. Two captain chairs stand ready at the helm. The navigational gear is a full suite of Raymarine G-series equipment, which repeats at the upper helm station on the flybridge. The electronic gear includes a Raymarine Sat-TV antenna system. The accommodations are on the lower deck. The master suite spans full beam amidships. The lower deck too is treated with the same mahogany as the main deck, differences in the woods keeps it from getting too overpowering.

There are two more cabins on the starboard side. These two share a head and sleep four in bunk-style beds. Ascend the stairs to the upper deck. Once there you’ll be treated to the myriad entertainment possibilities laid out before you. There is the 17-foot tender stored athwartship on the aft end of the deck. There is room enough for a pair of personal watercraft aft of the hot tub and two moveable chaise lounges. Forward to port is the barbecue and to starboard a U-shaped settee. The area is covered with a non-retractable hardtop from the aft end of the hot tub to the forward edge of the helm. The forward coach roof is given over to a fourpad sun lounge and the forward edge is reserved for a u-shaped settee, with a table and a snack area. The crew quarters and the engine room access are via the same stairwell to port on the

There is enough room for twin C32 Caterpillar diesel engines, and auxiliaries, producing 1,550-BHP. They take the 107-footer to a maximum cruise of 18.5 knots at half-load. VICEM’S COLD-MOLDING SEQUENCING • The construction of a Vintage Line yacht begins by developing the 3D model to define the shape of the yacht. • The model is converted into a CNC code allowing the templates and jigs to be machined and assembled more accurately and quickly than traditionally lofted hull shapes. • The keel is built by laminating 30 layers of mahogany. The mahogany, sapele and utile woods used in the production of Vicem Yachts come from managed forests in Africa and South America. • The stempost is fabricated on a specially designed template, then joined with the keel. • Plywood templates for each frame are set up on the keel and joined by the laminated chine clamp and longitudinal battens to form the basic shape of the boat. • Frames are laminated and clamped to their place according to the templates which take the required form overnight. They will be temporarily removed later, to be sanded before being reinstalled. • Having been laminated to its final form, the transom is joined with the rest of the hull. Chine clamp, sheet clamp, spray rail and stiffeners are installed. • With the yacht’s hull almost structurally complete, the temporary frames are not needed any more and therefore removed before the deck beams are installed. The deck beams are laminated and secured to their places.

• With the bulkheads already built and engine girders in place, it is time to plank the hull shell. The hull shell consists of 4 multi-directional plies of selected mahogany, or sapele. The first layer is adhered to the frames, keel, chine clamp and sheer clamp by galvanized boat nails and saturated with epoxy at minus 45º. • The second layer, which is applied at +45º, and the third layer that is applied at 0º, are fastened and bonded with epoxy and stainless steel staples. • The fourth and final layer is fastened via epoxy and stainless steel strapand-staples that are removed, leaving behind a smooth hull which is ready to receive the final epoxy and e-glass sheathing or covering. • The final step in the structural construction is the full coating of the bilge areas, engine room and all exterior surfaces of the hull with a 10-oz e-glass cloth and epoxy resin. • To achieve a mirror-like finish, undercoating, epoxy fairing, long board and machine sanding and multiple coats of epoxy primer and polyurethane paint are applied. • Once the hull shell is formed and completed, the deck sheathing can commence. Thin layers of plywood are laminated and mechanically fastened to form the deck, cabin house and superstructure. The finishing process of epoxy, e-glass, fairing and painting is exactly the same as the hull. Now, the yacht is ready for the other craft groups such as cabinet makers, plumbers and mechanics to enter and begin the other equally important parts of a Vicem vessel.

VICEM YACTS RECOGNIZED BY THE BENJAMIN FRANKLIN MUSEUM OF PHILADELPHIA Vicem Yachts, the Turkish builder of luxury classic motor yachts and mega yachts, has the pleasure to announce that a Vicem-branded educational video, which explains the techniques involved in the cold-molding construction, has been chosen by the management of the Benjamin Franklin Museum of Philadelphia to be used for didactical purposes. The clip, a Vicem Yachts production is being displayed in loop all day to illustrate the importance of cold-molding construction since its origins, which dates back to the times of Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) and his Maritime Observations. Many are familiar with Franklin’s political life and scientific work on electricity (he invented the lightning rod), but few know that this Founding Father of the United States of America was an all-round scientist, civic, activist, printer, musician, satirist, heraldist and diplomat alike. He was also very much keen on maritime matters. In 1768, after traveling to England and discovering that many captains were upset for being somehow slowed while crossing the Atlantic Ocean westbound, he compiled a map, jointly with Timothy Folger, depicting the Gulf Stream. It took years for British captains to follow Benjamin Franklin’s advice but once they did, they were able to trim up to two weeks from their Atlantic crossing overall sailing time. The above mentioned Maritime Observations were published by the Philosophical Society in 1786, a mere four years before Franklin’s death Alongside the oceanographic findings of the eminent scientist, this work included ideas related to navigation, boatbuilding techniques, catamaran hulls, watertight compartments, sea anchors, shipboard lightning rods and, even, a soup bowl designed to stay stable during a stormy passage. The Vicem video chosen by the Benjamin Franklin Museum of Philadelphia compares the cold-molded process of the XVIII century to the techniques carried out by the skilled craftsmanship of Vicem Yachts, validating nowadays some of the concepts illustrated by Franklin himself in his Maritime Observations over two centuries ago.

In addition, on the deck there is another sunbathing area at the bow, with a dinette and an optional table, an idea that makes it possible to have complete privacy aboard. Below deck, Pershing 82’ is a custom-made model, tailored to the ship owner’s requests. ybovich vessels, renowned for the quality of their ride and classic features with an overall low profile, sleek, classic sheer lines, and classic window features, are unmistakable in a marina. The only confusing aspect of stalking Rybovichs underway is wondering whether the custom mahogany masterpiece that’s consuming your mind’s eye is a new boat from 2009 or an exceptionally well-maintained vessel built over 50 years ago, one that some captain of industry actually stood waiting in line years for and then paid $500,000 or more for his very own. One-of-a-kind dream boat, a cherished possession that he will keep as long as he would a fine diamond or classic car. Maintaining that Rybovich legacy of signature concepts in sportfishing, the broken sheer to transom doors, tuna towers, fighting chairs and aluminum outriggers, is always at the forefront of Dusty Rybovich’s mind. As the first member of his designing family to actually have the formal education of a naval architecture and engineering degree from WEBB Institute, Dusty reflects on the serendipity of maintaining his family’s 100year reputation of designing yachts. “I want to design something that will endure the test of time,” Dusty Rybovich says. He’s the latest generation of great minds designing custom, cold molded mahogany sportfishing boats in the classic style that Rybovich customers have demanded and expected for decades. Dusty’s father is Mike Rybovich, who established Michael Rybovich and Sons Boatworks in 2011 in Palm Beach Gardens at the site of the old E & H Boatworks. Mike’s father was Emil, and with his brothers, John and Tommy, built on the service and mahogany vessel design company that their parents formed, making their family name synonymous with sportfishing. Mike’s new company has two vessels currently under construction. Hull #1 is a 64-foot walkaround with an express style and just had a composite superstructure installed to save weight. “It is unique and a cool project,” says Dusty, adding “composite material, for us, is a new production technique.” Another new

concept for Rybovich is the pod propulsion for the 86-footer that is hull #2. “We just laid the keel for this classic sportfish.” Dusty says two more letters of intent have been signed for hulls three and four, and while they’re not done deals yet, the tradition of wealthy fishermen reserving their spot in some Rybovich production line looks like it may continue for another century. “We’re on a six month rotation to complete a hull and flip it to start a new one. We can work on two new boats at the same time while doing other service and refurbishing projects.” Dusty is enjoying working with his dad, Mike, and his brother, Alex, who is on the service side of the business. “Initially, I was nervous to see if we would see eye to eye,” says Dusty. “We disagree on a lot of little things, but are in sync with the big picture.” The big picture is building custom, one-off mahogany hulls, in the tradition of Miss Chevy II, which revolutionized the industry when

Mike Ribovich

Rybovich and Sons splashed it in 1947. This legendary 34-footer is considered the first, true sportfisher. Of course, providing the steady, meticulous maintenance work in the yard today is also a Rybovich heritage, and why Ernest Hemingway chose the old Rybovich & Sons to service his beloved Pilar in 1934. “It’s hard for people who don’t have their name up on the building or on their shirt to understand the uncompromising part,” says Mike Rybovich. “Protecting that name and making sure that any product associated with that name will be absolutely uncompromised is essential. Custom is custom, everything else is not. I’m not sure that semi-custom really exists.” Time will tell if Dusty has inherited his father’s ability to build the boats that he sees in his mind’s eye. The way he runs his hands over the lines of the hull is special and he sees threedimensionally, like his brain is a CAD system. He can look at a boat and see there’s too much dead rise which will produce too much white water in the wake. Both Dusty and Mike spend a lot of time fishing. Their hobby subliminally reinforces what their boats are built to do. “We forget,” Mike says. “We load three or four heads, four staterooms and then air condition it all. Everything you have at home you have on the boat but we forget it is a fishing platform. This is the primary reason that we build them, to go out there and catch fish. The best policy is to pay attention, listen and observe. You’ll develop some good ideas consistently.” With their last name and his family company back, both the legacy and destiny of Rybovich sport fishing boats are in sync again. Dusty Rybovich is not going to let go of that privilege that’s his ambition, his soul, his DNA. “We don’t tend to follow trends except our own [regarding the overall look of the boat], except perhaps the trend of course of boats getting bigger over time,” Dusty says. “It is great to finally be in the driver’s seat and contribute to the boats I have admired all my life.”

uando te aproximares da terra, abre bem os olhos.” This warning, issued by 16th century Portuguese sailors traveling along the southern coast of the State of Bahia, ordered seamen to keep their eyes peeled as they neared land. The key words in the phrase, “abre” (open) and “olhos” (eyes), were combined to form the word “Abreolhos”, which is used to designate an area that is full of coral reefs. It is also the name given to a famous archipelago that is made up of 5 small volcanic islands and is located some 70 km off the coast of Bahia. This ecological sanctuary is an important refuge for migrating birds and marine mammals, and it is the largest stretch of coral reefs in all of South America. In one of those rare twists of fate, when we

reached the archipelago, the anchorage was empty except for one sailboat, manned by a friend of ours, who greeted us with a toot of the horn as he took our picture. He was bringing a boat from the Caribbean back to Buenos Aires, and it was a total miracle that we happened to meet in this enchanting little out-of-the-way place in the middle of the ocean! Naturally, we spent our first day in Bahia together, cooking out, sipping on piña coladas and sharing anecdotes as we marveled at the sunset. This archipelago was the first stop on our trip through Bahía territory. A pair of sea turtles was swimming nearby our sailboat, which was constantly surrounded by entire families of stunning angel fish and papagayo fish, and –several feet below- a sting ray skimmed the ocean floor. So we put on our snorkels, masks and flippers and dove into an enchanting world full of amazing coral reefs and colorful fish that had no problem swimming right up to us. We didn’t want to get out of the water - ever! Bird species of all kinds set up camp on different islands and, in the afternoon, we explored Ilha Siriba, the exclusive habitat of the Masked Booby (Sula dactylatra), a gentle white bird with a yellow beak and eyes. The day we left for Porto Seguro, we witnessed the

Enseguida nos ponemos las patas de rana, el snorkel y las antiparras y nos sumergimos en un mundo de ensueño lleno de corales asombrosos y de peces coloridos que se nos acercan sin temor. No dan ganas de salir más del agua!. Cada especie de aves se instalan en una isla diferente, y a la tarde vamos a recorrer la Ilha Siriba, hábitat exclusivo de los atobás blancos (Sula dactylatra), mansos pájaros blancos de pico y ojos amarillos. El día que partimos rumbo a Porto Seguro, vemos la llegada de las primeras ballenas jubarta (Megaptera novaeangliae), que emigran a la región entre Julio y Noviembre, para dar a

Porto Seguro is a place of great historical importance, since it was there that Portuguese explorer Pedro Álvarez Cabral and his crew first set foot on Brazilian soil. The cute little town delighted us with its diverse handicraft shops and countless bars lining a street appropriately named the “Passarela do Álcool” or “Alcohol Catwalk”. We crossed the Buranhem river in a raft to reach the breathtaking beaches of the south, where the coral reefs form natural pools when the tide is low. Our next stop was Ilhéus, “the cacao capital”, where we visited the home of renowned author Jorge Amado, whose novels brought fame to Bahía. Right in front of the Cathedral is the famous Bar El Vesubio. We waited - in vain - to see Gabriela, one of Amado’s immortal characters, step through the door. In the end, we spotted traces of her in each one of the sensual mulatas who passed by us. After trying the delicious Sucos de Cacau, a local specialty, we were ready to continue our journey to the sublime and secluded Bahia de Camamú, where we spent nearly an entire week anchored in front of a charming little desert beach, complete with white sand and palm trees. The only visitors we received were a group of playful dolphins who came by in

Cruzamos en balsa el Rio Buranhem hacia las encantadoras playas del sur, en las que los arrecifes forman piletas naturales durante la marea baja. Nuestra próxima escala será en Ilhéus, “la capital del cacao”, donde visitamos la casa del célebre escritor Jorge Amado, que popularizó a Bahía a través de sus novelas. Justo enfrente de la Catedral está el famoso Bar El Vesubio, de donde esperamos - en vano- ver salir a la inmortal Gabriela, a la que creemos reconocer en cada una de las sensuales mulatas que pasan a nuestro lado. Después de probar los deliciosos Sucos de Cacau, especialidad local, estamos listos para continuar nuestro viaje hasta la paradisíaca y solitaria Bahía de Camamú, donde pasamos casi una semana fondeados frente a una preciosa playita desierta de arena blanca y pequeños cocoteros. the afternoons and a toothless fisherman in a makeshift canoe who sold us some shrimp, which we cooked up on the grill in the cockpit - delicious! This beautiful bay was so peaceful that it was hard for us to leave, even though we knew that our next stop would be magnificent: Morro de Sâo Paulo on the Ilha de Tinharé, Bahia’s most chic beach spot, popular among young people and populated by ex-hippies from the 70s, who now own restaurants and inns, and live in harmony with the local population of mellow fishermen. There are no cars on the island; postcard-perfect donkeys provide the only mode of transportation. And for practical purposes, the beaches are named beach one, two, three and four, and one is more awe-inspiring than the next! The sunset from the ruins of the old fort was spectacular. So was the walk from the tropical Iate Clube to the Vila do Morro at low tide. And we never ceased to be delighted by the locals’ good humor! Finally, we sailed across the Baia de Todos os Santos and docked at Salvador, the capital of the State of Bahía, and the capital of Brazil until 1763. We docked at the Centro Náutico da Bahía (where schooners depart for Ilha de Itaparica), in the noisy heart of the Ciudad Baja. This area encompasses the old port, the business district and the Mercado Modelo, where there are hundreds of handicrafts stalls, and a couple of bars on the first floor, with terraces overlooking the nearby Forte Sâo Marcelo that offer the best views of the sunset over the bay. At the entrance to the Mercado there is always a

Y finalmente, cruzamos a vela la Baía de Todos os Santos, y llegamos a la carismática ciudad de Salvador, capital del estado de Bahía y, hasta 1763, también capital de Brasil. Salvador, la ciudad de las 365 Iglesias, la de las fiestas populares más coloridas y fervorosas, cuna del candomblé y los orixás, y del mayor Carnaval del país. Fondeamos en el Centro Náutico da Bahía, (de donde parten las escunas hacia la Ilha de Itaparica), en el ruidoso corazón de la Ciudad Baja. Esta zona abarca el viejo puerto, el distrito comercial y el Mercado Modelo, donde hay cientos de puestos de artesanías, y un par de bares en el primer piso, con terrazas que se proyectan sobre el cercano Forte Sâo Marcelo y los mejores atardeceres de la bahía. group of capoeiristas who dance to the rhythm of a berimbáu, an eye-catching local percussion instrument that is made out of a chord stretched over a wooden bow. We took the Lacerda elevator to the Ciudad Alta, where old government buildings, churches, museums and the mansions of the historic center of Pelourinho are located. This neighborhood -known lovingly as “el Pelo” by the locals- was designated as a World Herritage Site by UNESCO and is home to the most important group of baroque style buildings on the American continent. The neighborhood has been almost entirely restored. El Pelo is the heart of Salvador’s cultural and artistic life. There you’ll find a wide range of bars and restaurants with local food, the biggest bohemian scene and the best night life. The magical spirit of Bahía has been with us ever since we arrived two months ago. It’s that special something in the air, those sweet aromas, the slow, and almost lazy - I would say - way the people talk, the melodious way they walk, their superstitions, their dances and their joy. The State of Bahía is magical and, as Jorge Amado once proclaimed and we have since confirmed, “under a sky of admirable clarity, this is where Brazil’s sweetest people live.”

Subiendo por el elevador Lacerda llegamos a la Ciudad Alta, donde se encuentran los viejos edificios de gobierno, las iglesias, museos y caserones del centro histórico del Pelourinho. Declarado por la UNESCO Patrimonio de la Humanidad, el “ Pelo”- como lo denominan afectuosamente los locales- alberga el conjunto barroco arquitectónico más importante del continente americano, ya restaurado en su casi totalidad. Aquí se concentra la vida cultural y artística de Salvador con los más variados bares y restaurantes de comida local, así como la mayor movida nocturna y bohemia. Desde que llegamos a Bahía hace ya dos meses, el espíritu mágico de esta tierra nos viene acompañando, con ese algo tan especial del aire y sus aromas dulzones, del ritmo pausado, casi perezoso, diría, de esta gente de hablar y caminar melodioso, con sus supersticiones, sus danzas y su alegría. El Estado de Bahía es mágico y, según proclama Jorge Amado, como bien hemos podido comprobar, “bajo un cielo de admirable claridad, aquí vive el pueblo más dulce de Brasil”.

dug my toes into the fluffy sand, pushing them below the sun-hot surface and thought about which direction to go. Turning left would take us along the beach to one end of Fraser Island, while turning right would take us inland through spindly forests of Kauri pine, tallowood, and cypress and away from the Great Sandy Strait and its everchanging sand bars. Typically, ocean views win for us—but we’ve already sailed through these waters, as we make our way from our Australian entry port of Bundaberg, to our temporary new home in Brisbane. Along the way, we’d spotted a turtle and an introverted dugong, and now I wanted to see a dingo: Australia’s infamous wild dog. A more primitive version of the domestic dog, the dingo is thought to have arrived from Asia thousands of years ago. Cross-breeding and culling have cut its numbers, but the wild dogs that live on Fraser Island are considered some of the purest examples of the breed in Australia. Our Australian friend Cheryl explained that dingoes are shy, wild, and likely asleep during midday heat. But I’m hard to dissuade when I’m on a mission. So, I felt quite vindicated when three minutes into our walk we spotted one. The generic looking brown dog watched us quietly. Flustered, I stumbled while trying to take its picture, startling the dingo and sending it back into the bush. Australia, being an island continent, offers a range of cruising. later at the bar at Wide Bay. If you’ve ever crossed a bar (or entered the pass of a South Pacific atoll for that matter) you’ll know timing is everything. Water that’s churning with whirlpools and standing waves will slacken to still—if you’ve managed to cross at the right moment. Knowing Wide Bay can be deadly; we were cautious with our timing and double checked our estimate with the local volunteer marine rescue unit. As we headed out from the protected estuary into the open ocean, the water grew shallow, the waves steepened, but then we were out. The water turned brilliant blue and sandy cliffs unfolded on our starboard side. With 65 miles to cover, we unfurled our spinnaker and started to fly, sailing in company with six other big cats, but gradually, one by one, we overtook each of them. Soon colourful sails dotted the water behind us and the surf town of Mooloolaba was just visible on the horizon. From Mooloolaba, we sailed the next leg to Morton Bay-a 125 kilometre long bay with some 360 islands scattered throughout the shallow waters. Our destination was Moreton Island. Anchoring behind the wrecks at Tangalooma, we set off for an hour taking a long hike down the beach, enjoying the pristine silence and the view of whales swimming on the horizon. With our time out in the island winding down and the lure of the city beckoning, we tried to make the most of Moreton Island. Essentially a big sand one, we discovered the fun of sand surfing on Mt Tempest; a 285 m sand one that is thought to be the tallest dune in the world.

We discovered the fun of sand surfing on Mt tempest; a 285 m sand dune that is thought to be the tallest dune in the world.

Sledding down from its height offered a view that stretches across Moreton Bay to the Glass House Mountains—peaks Captain Cook had named when he sailed these same waters in 1770 and to Brisbane, a city we’d shortly call home. As the sun rose on our final day we were sailing across the bay and we could see the city’s high rises silhouetted in the distance. “It really is a city.” I said to my husband Evan. After not seeing a major city since leaving Mexico, they had become mythical places to us and Brisbane seemed unreal. Winding our way up the river—watching the landscape change from wilderness to industry, to suburb, to metropolis—reality kicked in. I never felt as small on my boat as I did as we motored up the river past the city centre. Even in the middle of the ocean our boat felt bigger. But here—against the backdrop of modern glass and steel, I felt like our little sailboat, which carried us through such wondrous places, was at the beginning of another grand adventure.

hoosing the right navigation app is no easy feat. Some cost a few precious boat bucks just to download, and “free” doesn’t necessarily mean “less” when it comes to features. With the recent news that NOAA will stop printing paper charts this April, iPads are fast replacing chart plotters

on the bridge or in the cockpit. As a former cruiser, I often relied on print cruising guides to learn about a new port or cruising area. As we all know, this kind of information is always in flux. And there’s the rub: How do we get the latest information, preferably from other cruisers? The answer: AC. For the past few years ActiveCaptain (AC) has grown and expanded to include over 100,000 boaters who write reviews and updates on anchorages, ports, hazards, facilities and more, all around the world. Sail with confidence with any of the five navigation apps below. They all include ActiveCaptain data as an overlay for members. (AC membership is free).

SKIPPER (Ver 1.2) Trailerbehind, Inc. Free The newest offering in the Apps Store is Skipper and the free version isn’t just a trial; it includes a handy NOAA online chart viewer for onshore planning and satellite imagery on shore. For the Pro version you pay an annual fee of $12/year and you don’t have to pay extra for the charts you’ve already paid the Government for in taxes. NOAA Charts are auto-updated (or choose Google Earth or Topo maps, including historic topos. What fun!). All is cached and displayed offline very seamlessly except weather and Google Earth which require an online connection. It also does routes/waypoints and real-time navigation (which Garmin’s app doesn’t do). Your subscription syncs your personal data and routes, waypoints, tracks, etc. between your multiple devices. Raster charts (the best!) load fast and look great since they are mosaic-ed together and are only 1.8GB each for the smallest possible download size. Skipper’s creator, Andrew Johnson says that Inland Rivers Charts including all NOAA vector charts will be added soon and he is working on ways to integrate Open Street Map technology. Perhaps my dream of having one app that shows both Charts and Maps may soon become real!
