I was reading your Winter 2013 edition at the Miami International Boat Show, and the article written by Mrs. Birnbaum, “Top 5 Best Mobile Apps for Navigation” offered a good lead about mobile apps for navigation but none of them exist at the Play Store for downloading. Next time revise the info before publishing. Thanks. E. Santisteban Nancy Birnbaum’s response: “While it’s true that there is a dearth of good navigation apps available via the Android PlayStore, there are a couple of options that include ActiveCaptain. One is C-Map/Jeppesen’s Plan2Nav which has a handy feature allowing you to store data offline so no Internet connection is required to run it. Also, SmartChart AIS by Technology Systems Inc. is a free chartplotter with U.S. NOAA vector charts that can display ActiveCaptain over a cellular network. Since iPads were mentioned in the first paragraph as “replacing chart plotters...,” I hoped it would be understood without a blatant plug for Apple products in the title.”

The annual meeting is one of the major association events of the year. This year’s meeting was attended by members who are owners of schooners, sailors and other individuals and organizations interested in preserving and promoting the virtues of the schooner rig. The Transat Jacques n 2013, in order to maintain global leadership anticipating the changing market conditions, Azimut Vabré celebrated its Yachts decided to make significant changes to its th organization. One important message they want to corporate 11 edition in 2013 communicate to their public is that “Made in Italy” translates

into quality, design and innovation which they divulge through an ad campaign called “Being Italian” which is what makes Azimut boats unique and inimitable. It also signifies pride in exhibiting the cultural roots of Italy, a country built on a tradition of passion, creativity and the construction of beautiful and innovative yachts loved by their owners throughout the five continents. In 2012-2013, seven new products were launched: Flybridge 54 and 84, 55S, 43 Magellan, 43HT, 76 and Atlantis 34. In particular, new models such as the Magellan 43, 43HT and
Atlantis 34 increase numerically the range and complete it downward. It’s a strategically useful choice because in addition to potentially acquiring a new market share, it also allows them to contact a new customer base which, if as loyal as Azimut customers usually are, will have the opportunity to grow with Azimut products forever. Starting in January 2014, Ferruccio LUPPI, CEO at Azimut|Benetti Group, will also serve as CEO of the Yachts Business line. As part of the reorganization strategy, an investment was set for 29 million Euros to streamline the Avigliana site, to increase on R&D efforts to keep offering the market new technologically advanced products and to purchase a new software management system to optimize the purchasing and production process.
The inaugural Panama International Boat Show will take place from June 20 through June 22, 2014, at the Flamenco Marina conveniently located near downtown Panama City. The Marina is a flourishing tourist attraction with a wide range of amenities, including 238 slips protected by two breakwaters, Wi-Fi, and nine onsite restaurants. Custom Discovery / Pangaea Expedition 2014 Iceland to Sweden on Sea Dragon
H
ave you ever had the desire to sail in high latitudes and see whales in their environment first hand? Join Pangaea Expeditions aboard Sea Dragon in July 2014 to sail between Iceland and Sweden with a stop over in the Faroes Islands. Sailing a total of 1,250 sea miles across the Northern Atlantic, the expedition will be on the lookout for great whales and dolphins to incorporate the information gathered to the OBIS database. During the passage, a directional hydrophone will also be trailed for the detection of acoustics from sperm whales, orcas, bottlenose whales, pilot whales and all species of dolphins. All the information will be collected in a computer program onboard to be analyzed later by scientists that are conducting research in this area. he fifth annual running of BACARDI Miami Sailing Week (BMSW) presented by EFG was held March 2-8, 2014, with regatta headquarters at Kennedy Park in Coconut Grove. The six-day racing schedule was headlined by the Star class which contested the 87th Bacardi Cup. For the final three days of the regatta, the Stars shared Biscayne Bay with competitors in the Audi Melges 20, J/70, Melges 24, Viper 640 and VX One classes. The mantra “a bad day on the water is better than a good day at the office” will resonate with many of the sailors who raced at this edition of the BACARDI® Miami Sailing Week. While on March 7th the breeze was higher than allowed for competition by some class rules, for the finale there was so little wind it appeared as though a raft-up was taking place on Biscayne Bay instead of a regatta. Wrapping up a six-day schedule, the 180 teams racing in six one-design classes completed enough races for the victors to collect the spoils, and, with the mid-day cancellation of additional races the sailors had ample time to enjoy the legendary hospitality of Bacardi. Since 2000, there has been a jinx for the day one winning Star team as none in that position has gone on to claim the prized BACARDI Cup. That was the case again this year for Mark Reynolds (San Diego, Calif.) and Miami sailor Magnus Liljedahl, who won the first race of the series to jump to the top of the 55-boat Star fleet. The duo, who shared both Olympic Gold and a Star World Championship win in 2000, had not sailed together for 10 years. “I’m from Miami, live here, have a lot of friends and this result [second overall] feels like a win,” said Liljedahl who has more wins of the Bacardi Cup (five) than any other crew in the event’s history, while Reynolds holds the record (seven) for skippers. “It was a good event for Mark and me. I have a lot of respect for him, he is an outstanding skipper, he is very balanced and I like racing with him.” Lars Grael of Brazil, the two-time (’88, ’96) Tornado Olympic Medalist, with crew Samuel Gonzalves, moved to the top of the Star standings on the second day of racing and held that position to the end. They took the win with five points, holding a five-point lead over Reynolds and Liljedahl. “This is great, it’s my first BACARDI Cup and it’s the first for a Brazilian boat,” said Lars Grael. “I’m very proud. Last year we got close and this year we sealed the deal. We started off with two

seconds and a first; we dropped our bad race from the other day. Yesterday we had too much wind, today too little, and with our conservative approach we took it home.” Lars Grael’s older brother, Torben Grael, the 1990 Star World Champion, and crew Guilheme Almeida, finished third overall with 12 points; followed by the 2012 Bacardi Cup Champion Xavier Rohart of France and Serge Pulfer with 16 points. Brad Funk (Plantation, Fla.) and crew Mark Strube round out the top-five with 18 points. In the 41-boat Audi Melges 20 fleet, reigning world champion John Taylor (Jupiter, Fla.) goes home the winner after posting finishes of 3-5 yesterday to move to the top of the standings with 35 points. Drew Freides (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) is second overall with 37 points; Russell Lucas (Little Silver, N.J.) placed third overall with 41 points; followed by Brazilian sailor Cesar Gomes Neto with 44 points. Defending champion Michael Kiss (Holland, Mich.), also a three-time national champion in the class, completes the top-five with 45 points. “The fleet was very competitive; there was a very high level of sailing,” said Bill Hardesty who was John Taylor’s tactician. “It was great sailing against the best of them. We won worlds in December and the hardest thing to do is to come back and win again.” In the six-boat Melges 24 class Kevin Welch (Anacortes, Wash.) won the series with six points. Italian sailor Nicola Ardito was second overall with eight points; Steven Boho (Lake Geneva, Wisconsin) took third overall with 16 points; followed by Canada’s Richard Reid with 19 points. “Coming from the northwest to sail in Miami was a great change of pace,” said Welch. “We have not been able to sail since last fall. First day we hit a snag; our anchor line wrapped around our

keel. So Friday our strategy was to just avoid disaster and sail smooth. Friday was the best sailing day we have had in a very long time. This was a great event to be part of. We hope to be back next year. The race committee did a great job of setting the course up.” With scores of 10-1-1, Will Welles (Portsmouth, R.I.) took the win in the 40-boat J/70 fleet with 12 points, winning the tie-breaker over BMSW defending champion Brian Keane (Weston, Mass.) who had finishes of 7-2-3. Peter Duncan (Rye, N.Y) took third with 14 points; followed by Heather Gregg-Earl (Boston, Mass.) with 22 points; and Tim Molony (New Orleans, La.) with 23. “Out of all the regattas this was a really great one to win,” said Welles. “We had a great start, good team work, nice speed and a little luck. The first day we had about 10 knots, second day we had about 20. So I would say today they made a good choice to not race today. Coming from Newport we really love coming to BACARDI and we are so glad they invited the J/70 class to be part of it.” In the 25-boat Viper 640 fleet, Phil Lotz (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) took the win by just one point over defending BMSW champion Brad Boston (Canada) who had six points. British sailor Justin Scott was third overall with 14 points; Australian sailor Rod Beurteaux finished fourth overall with 16 points; and another British sailor, Jon Powell, was fifth with 22 points. “I am very happy to break my streak of placing second,” said Lotz who had his wife, Wendy, and Luke Lawrence as crew. “I was neck and neck with Brad Boston, who sailed very well! I would also like to add how great it was to sail with all the international teams who crossed the pond to be part of this race. I think the key factor to our win is that we really

sailed as a team. We worked hard with the breeze on Thursday and Friday. This was mine and my wife’s second time sailing in this race; we have been sailing together for a little over a year now.” In the VX One class, Donovan Brennan (Mobile, Ala.) took the win in that 21-strong fleet with seven points after finishes of 5-1-1. David Bolyard (Portsmouth, R.I.) and Kevin Northrop (Daphne, Alabama), were second and third, respectively, tied on eight points each. David Reich (Trussville, Ala.) took fourth overall with 13 points; Charles Brown (Newport, R.I.) finished fifth with 14 points. “Wow, winning this race was extraordinary for a couple of reasons,” said Brennan who sailed with his son and daughter. “I won it with my family. I came into it with no expectations. I believe we won on energy and as for technicalities go, we had a flatter give then the others did. We were at 23 knots yesterday. Winning was just as great as it was running into old friends and Olympians. This was my first BACARDI and probably will not be my last.” During BACARDI Miami Sailing Week sailors enjoyed the hospitality lounge, BACARDI Rum tastings, as well as a special showing of the film 07.07.07 Amorita’s Unlucky Day. A special exhibit, Wynwood Sails Color the Grove, featured the work of 10 artists of the graffiti and street art genre taking inspiration from the sea and sailing to create a work on canvas shaped like the jib of a sailboat. The art was displayed at Coco Walk, the iconic open-air shopping, dining, and entertainment destination in Coconut Grove, from March 2-8, daily between 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. In addition, select images from the 2010 to 2013 regattas, from the lenses of respected marine photographers Franco Pace of Italy, Onne van der Wal of Holland and Cory Silken of the USA , were displayed alongside the canvases created specifically for Wynwood Sails Color the Grove to juxtapose “the City meets the Sea” for this unique art event. With its 22.75 meter overall length and 5.70 meter beam, the Ferretti 750 is a restyling of the successful Ferretti 720 and intends to target dynamic, sophisticated customers, capturing the increasing interest towards the unmistakable Made-in-Italy style of all Ferretti yachts in the various international markets where the brand is currently present, especially through the different layout solutions developed to meet a wide range of needs. Conceived by the Group’s Product Strategy Committee and Marketing Department in cooperation with Ferrettigroup Engineering (the company’s team of engineers and architects) and AYT&D (Advanced Yacht Technology & Development, the group’s naval research and design center), together with Studio Zuccon International Project, Ferretti Yachts 750 immediately strikes for its slender and sporty outer lines, which benefit from the installation of an elongated flybridge with recessed satellite antennas – a solution that

minimizes the aesthetic impact of the domes on the boat’s profile. In the standard version, the craft has no hard top. An almost 5 meter long Bimini top can be installed on the upper deck upon request. The sundeck – even larger now as there is no davit installed – is also available in two more versions, fitted with a roll bar and integrated Bimini top or with a hard top and awning, respectively. These three solutions bear witness to this model’s great versatility. Moreover, the sunbathing area located beyond the pilot station has been further enlarged, allowing guests to enjoy the utmost relaxation at all times. AFT AREA Another important innovation can be found in the aft outdoor area, where a wide electricallyhydraulically operated swimming platform (over 1.5 meters long) can be lowered by almost half a meter below the water surface, resulting in very easy tender haulage. This platform can lift up to 450 kg and can host an almost fourmeter-long tender (upon request the boatyard can supply a Williams 385 Turbojet). This area has also been conceived as a pleasant play area where the owner and his guests can relax directly on the sea. A large compartment with a tilting door has been installed on the

MAIN DECK From the cockpit - which is a true outdoor living & dining room with teak flooring, furnished with a large wooden table, a sofa and chairs seating up to 8 people - access can be gained to both the flybridge, via a staircase to portside, and the crew cabins, via another staircase leading aft, left of the sofa. The glazed door – with automatic opening upon request – divides the outdoor area from the main deck interiors. The salon is characterized by outstanding liveability - as it exploits the entire hull width – and brightness, thanks to the large uninterrupted glazing from stern to bow which lets in plenty of natural light. The interior décor is characterized by a series of fine design solutions resulting in a very modern style: oak wood, for example, has been combined with grey lacquered inserts in the ceiling panels, in the anti-rolling compartments around the furniture, and in the curtain storage compartments.

Stepping into the salon, a large L-shaped sofa in leather & custom-made fabric, including a series of storage peaks under the cushions, can be found on the left-hand side of the room. A leather coffee table, also built by the boatyard and featuring a glass top by Omnidecor, completes the living area furniture. Towards the bow, still to port, is the dining area, furnished with a large table by Cantori with a central base, a glass top by Omnidecor, and satin bronze finishes. Six “Martha G” model chairs with steel frames, by O&GGruppo Calligaris, are arranged around the dining table. The entire dining area is lit by three original lamps with LED panels and grey polished lacquered compartments. Continuing towards the bow, a sliding glass door leads to a passage room with dinette and two small couches that can also be used for chartering; from it access is gained, on the left, to the galley and, at the extreme bow, to the pilot station. The large white lacquered galley with Corian top is directly connected to the pilot station by a second sliding door, towards the bow. Excellent visibility in the pilot station is ensured by the front and side glazing. Left of the helm station, a door opening on the outdoor walkway allows the crew to reach the wheelhouse, the cockpit, and the crew quarters directly, without crossing the salon, thereby ensuring the utmost privacy to onboard guests. Right of the pilot area is the staircase leading to the lower deck. LOWER DECK In the standard below-deck configuration Ferretti Yachts 750 features four cabins, all ensuite. Besides the full-beam master cabin, located amidships, there are two twin cabins

at the extreme bow and a VIP cabin lit by large open-view windows. In the master cabin, the bed is located in the center and is oriented along the cruising direction. On the left, a sliding door leads to a wide bathroom, which exploits the cabin width to the fullest and is divided into three different areas, among which the wide glass-wall shower box is worth mentioning in particular. The color shades chosen for this cabin make it really stylish and yet modern and with a strong personality. The bed band and headboard, for instance, are in the same grey shade as the lacquered furniture and furnishings on the main deck. ENGINES Ferretti 750 will be available in two different engine configurations: two MTU 10V 2000 M84, 1381 mhp engines or, as an option, two MTU 10V 2000 M93, 1524 mhp engines. The standard configuration allows to reach a maximum speed of 30 knots and a cruising speed of 27 knots, while the optional configuration can push the yacht to a maximum speed of 32.5 knots and a cruising speed of 29 (preliminary data).

T
he Italian based Zuccon International Project (ZIP) and their recently created brand, Zuccon SuperYacht Design, have a long legacy of innovation in yacht design. Their client line up reflects demanding and knowledgeable yachtsmen like few other companies in the world. Their storybook tale started nearly 40 years ago as architects Giovanni Zuccon and Paola Galeazzi collaborated on a design that was up against renderings by a prestigious list of well established designers. Cantieri Posillipo S.p.A. ultimately chose the Zuccon design, which became the popular Technema 65-foot yacht. That premier was the prologue to their now well documented, illustrious careers. This married couple of architects has now seen the next generation of their family join the progression as the Zuccon company expands. Siblings Martina and Bernardo Zuccon, have established themselves as topflight architects and principles in their own right. The 46 meter Al Fahed is just one of their prestigious designs. They’ve participated in creating over 100 yachts and many Ferretti owners, of all sizes, have benefitted from the Zuccon Studio’s slant and dedication. They’re currently bringing technological innovations as well as interior and exterior refinements to many of the Ferretti lines. The new SuperYacht Design (SYD) division is dedicated to the maxi-yacht niche and has launched a 90 and 92 meter super yacht within the last few years. Zuccon expanded the universe beyond traditional pleasure yacht silhouettes and with the latter design, employed a vertical bow that’s a real standout. The company’s inspirations are gathered from non customary resources and delve into civil architecture and even military applications. More traditional mega yachts utilize aft

sections to house the conventional creature comforts such as typical guest areas including pools, sunbathing and general communal gathering areas. Not so with the 92 meter SYD application. They’ve transitioned this all forward towards the bow to offer more secluded environments. Aft decks have been transformed to what the company refers to as technical space for the support of the vessels tenders, stowage and work areas. Zuccon reports most of the crew’s daily functions are out of sight of the owner, including dropping the anchor to insure the utmost privacy. No materials are off limits to a potential ‘prince’- their reference to a client. Zuccon has distinctive constructions fabricated of steel, aluminium, fiberglass or combinations of metals. The architects keep a never ending open dialogue with the owner and builder; they prove this most important aspect of the ZIP philosophy leads to a successful build every time. Zuccon’s roster of designs is worth investigating. The 80M Chopi Chopi, built by CRN, is a six suite yacht constructed of steel and aluminium. It’s outfitted with every creature comfort an owner can imagine and perhaps some not thought of. A helicopter can even land specifically on the owner’s deck for complete privacy of comings and goings. Each of the two firms’ designs dedicates incredible attention to symmetry with the sea and environmental impacts of the build. Every yacht is unique and individual for the owner and integrates state-of-the-art systems for unmatched efficiency and comfort for the discriminating buyer. Q&A with Gianni and Bernardo Zuccon: YT: How difficult, if at all, has it been to have created a tremendously successful business while simultaneously maintaining it as a “family” event? What have been your secrets for success? *GZ: It’s never been difficult for us to work together and although we never intentionally planned to create a “family Studio” it all came naturally. We’re absolutely aware that ours is quite an unusual situation; we have a mother, father, son and daughter all sharing the same interest and passion. We work together without stepping in each other’s way or altering the family balance. Everything depends on us individually, realizing the great privilege of working everyday with people you love and who you hold in the greatest esteem. When my son and daughter joined the Studio, they brought along new ideas and different points of view; still today there’s an ongoing exchange of ideas. Surely that’s positive since it can guarantee continuity in our research. My wife and I have our own side years of experience; the combined result is the perfect mix between innovation and tradition. Our main secret is keeping the right balance and

YT: Does one material lend itself to more leeway in creativity and do you have a personal favorite among steel, aluminum or composites or a combination of them? **BZ: I personally find aluminum and steel to be more fascinating. Their manufacturing requires great craftsmanship, knowledge and ability. These two components deeply influence a product’s quality. Artisan manufacture will always maintain the special charm that makes the final product so unique and refined. Fiberglass on the other hand, in my mind, will always be linked to the idea of industrial production that inevitably leads to a certain uniformity and standardization. I have to admit that fiberglass does actually have an undeniable quality, since it allows experimentation and the ability to adopt more complex solutions.

YT: How do you reflect back on the original Technema 65 design of 30 years ago? GZ: The Technema 65 is one of the most important projects our Studio has worked on since it was the first ever to be realized. Still today, it perfectly embodies the ‘timeless’ concept according to the idea that a product image could be strengthened up in time through a peculiar and unique characterization in terms of style, typology and functionality. The Technema 65 design displays several contents we’re still referring to nowadays and consider them crucial for planning purposes. It’s surely been an important lesson and I figure we’ll continue to refer back to it for a long time. YT: How does ZIP maintain “continuity and innovation” with such rapid expansion? GZ: Research is a core part of our activity in the Studio and you have to be prepared to spend time, money and effort. Nevertheless, it must be absolutely clear that without any research and development activities there

would be neither progress nor innovation, two of the main ingredients behind our success. As architects we can’t overlook the newest innovations of the market; we’ve always kept up-to-date on new materials and technologies. It’s fundamental to experiment, to dare to push past your ‘comfort zone’ and to take the challenge to create something new and unique. I’ve personally learned to draw inspiration from other cultures as well as other fields, such as civilian architecture, and successfully introduced those elements into my projects. We’re lucky enough to be working with shipyards that are still willing and able to invest in research and design, while at the same time being open to our suggestions and ready to introduce new elements on their vessels. This really gave us the possibility to experiment with new materials and ideas so we’re able to bring to the market new opportunities and scenery for the onboard life.

YT: Has technology increased the difficulty of more complex designs or has it assisted with reaching new heights i.e.; zero emission engines, electronics and propulsion? GZ: I’m really pleased to see the newest trends are focusing on technologies that could make a vessel— no matter its dimensions— more environmentally friendly. Nowadays those issues are unavoidable. Thankfully the process started back in the years with marginal experimentation and has nowadays become irreversible for the future. New technologies mean new opportunities for a designer, allowing us to be more creative by presenting a wider range of possibilities with the layout and elaborate new concepts. At the same time, they’ve also generated new demands such us more onboard comfort, more silence and a greater respect for the environments. YT: How do you ensure that a ‘prince’ of a smaller design feels as important as the Emir and a 46M construction? GZ: Over the years we have designed different types and sizes of yachts, from the 1990’s 12M Ferretti designs to the 80M ‘Chopi Chopi’ launched for CRN last year, and now the new concepts by Zuccon SuperYacht Design. What we’ve learned—and what we always keep in mind—is that to create a beautiful yacht our main goal isn’t to build the biggest yacht ever, but to create a yacht that perfectly matches the owner’s desires and requests. It’s vital to connect and develop a relationship with the owner based on collaboration and mutual consideration. As architects, our main goal is to understand and fulfill our customer’s, or Prince’s as we refer to them, desires more than celebrate our own genius. Every ship owner, mostly due to cultural background, has a unique interpretation of the ship and sea life. Our goal as architects is to fully understand this specific trait and translate it into a project with the aim to offer a ‘tailor-made yacht to our client. YT: How do you top the 92M Super Yacht Design Discovery? BZ: The 92M Discovery is the second Zuccon Superyacht Design project in just a few months; the first was the 90M/SYD. It’s received a lot of attention and positive feedback since

its presentation at the Monaco Boat Show (September 2013). The success comes from the new solutions we’ve introduced including drawing inspirations from civilian architecture concepts. The yacht’s layout and function have been completely redefined as we offered something new to improve the onboard experience. That’s why the 92 Discovery has originality featuring an unusual switch of the typical external spaces’ functions. We utilized a different use of each deck and a predominance of the external spaces; the whole purpose was to overcome the traditional designing standards and explore a new yacht typology based on the link between design and architecture. The 92 Discovery is a perfect example of the research project implemented by Zuccon SuperYacht Design. A
fter some two and a half years of leisurely cruising Brazil’s 4,000 mile-long coastline aboard a classic S&S 33’, we decide to move on to Caribbean waters. We leave the town of Salinópolis- by the Amazon River- and our idea is to visit the three Guyanas - Guyanne Francaise, Suriname ( former Dutch colony) and Guyana ( former British colony) on our way to Barbados. Our first non Portuguese speaking landfall in years will be the famous French Salut Islands, some 500 miles to the northwest. On the first two days of our passage, we do not make much progress forward. Even while sailing 60 miles offshore, the Amazon river plays with us, making us feel like a tiny nutshell at the mercy of its devilishly powerful current. When the tide goes in, it pushes us nearly 25 miles sideways, towards dangerously shallow shores, and when it leaves the river, muddy water surrounds us and moves us some other 25 miles out to sea. We had read about this phenomenon, but never thought it could be so strong. And we are extremely lucky to be making this passage after an unusually dry rainy season, since we read that on “wet” years, the Pororoca (the violent current descending the Amazon) can be heard from 20 miles away. Its several meter tall thundering waves have been known to sweep whole villages on its galloping way to the sea. In contrast, the following two days are amazingly pleasant. We finally encounter the trade winds and enjoy breezy, steady day-sails, great sunsets, and the loveliest night sails ever, with a fat white moon smiling above us. The air is warm, our spirits are high, the wind whispers in our sails, and the deep blue water rushes by our hull with soft, caressing sounds. On the fifth morning, we can bearly notice them in the distant horizon, three lost dots rising from the sea. Les Îles du Salut: Île Royale, Île du Diable and Île St. Joseph, three tiny islands of less than 3,000 feet long and 120 feet high, that lie only 10 miles away from the town of Kourou in French Guyana. After the French had lost most of their North American territories by the beginning of the 18th century, they took

interest in South America, especially in a vast tropical land between the Amazon and the Orinoco rivers they had recently conquered. In 1763, a big expedition under the command of Kourou, arrived here to settle the area, but soon chaos and lack of food and hygiene originated a lethal epidemic. Most of the expeditioners fled to these islands which from the 16th century could be traced in nautical charts under the name of Triangle Islands, and later on, Devil Islands, due to their rocky shores and dangerous currents. The survivors started referring to them as Îles du Salut (Islands of Health), name by which they would be known from then onwards. You probably already know about them from the book Papillon written by Henri Charrière, and must have heard that, till not that long ago, France used them as a Penal Settlement. Île Royale was meant for ordinary prisoners, Île du Diable for political prisoners, and Île St. Joseph for violent and extremely dangerous ones, as well as for those sentenced to life imprisonment. The first prisoners deported to French Guyana in 1795 - shortly after the French Revolution - were 331 political and religious opponents. In 1852, the first convoy of 304 convicts arrives in Île Royale for the Penitentiary, and only in 1938 will France cease sending prisoners here. Repatriation of those who survived only began in 1946 and in 1953 the prison was finally shut down. More than one century of misery, torture, and such high mortality that this Guyana would earn the gloomy nickname of “Dry Guillotine”. And yet, from the sea these islands look so lovely and exuberant, with thousands of coconut trees almost falling from them, that it is hard to believe that this paradise could once put up with so much suffering. We anchor in Île Royale’s Baie des Cocotiers, the ancient harbor where provisions and prisoners used to be disembarked. Old buildings that served as warehouses circle the small bay, and beyond them, the greenest and most picturesque rainforest we have ever seen. We row ashore in our small dinghy and begin following a path bordered by centenary trees. It feels great to be walking on land and stretching our legs after a few days at sea. The rich aroma of fertile humid soil mixed with the strong perfume of wild flowers fills the air as small monkeys play above us on the tallest branches. When they see us, they throw fruit pits on our heads, making giggly noises whenever they succeed in hitting us. At one of the intersections, stands “La Maison du Bagne”, a charming traditional créole mansion, recently restored, that lodged all the successive prison directors and their families. We climb some rock steps carved by a delightful Hibiscus and Bougainvillea garden, and then by another perfectly stonepaved path, that speaks of hundreds of sombre lives subjected to hard labor. Through a coconut forest, we can hear the sea beating tirelessly against the cliffs. On the top of this rocky island old military

A través de una selva de cocoteros, se oye el ruido del mar golpeando, incansable, contra los acantilados. En la cima de la isla se yergue un antiguo cuartel militar transformado en hotel, “ L’Auberge des Îles du Salut”. Aquí pasaremos más de tres días instalados en una rústica habitación con mosquiteros por todos lados, un balcón sobre la jungla, y una vista espectacular de l’Île du Diable.. Por las mañanas nos despiertan los cantos de patrióticos gallos, y nos quedamos horas sentados en el balcón admirando la variedad de pájaros y mariposas que revolotean entre las plantas. barracks stand, now transformed into a hotel: L’ Auberge des Îles du Salut. Here we spend three wonderful days, settled in a rustic room with mosquito nets everywhere, a wooden balcony overlooking the jungle, and a spectacular view of Île du Diable, in front of us. At dawn, we are awakened by patriotic cocks, and we stay for hours sitting on the deck, admiring the variety of birds and gigantic butterflies that flutter about plants and flowers. We stroll along paths that circle the island stopping at the cliffs to observe the sea, as the prisoners must have done in search of an escape route. But the shark-infested ocean and the extremely dangerous currents discouraged most of them. The few escape attempts in rafts made with coconuts and sacking bags always ended in disaster or with the fugitives recaptured. And the french government even states that Papillon’s “true-story” is nothing but a lie, since no one ever managed to escape alive from Salut Islands. We visit the guardians’ barracks, the children’s graveyard (gloomy witness of the high mortality that used to reign here), and the chapel decorated in 1854 by the famous forger Lagrange, who would demand special treatment - and extra food servings!- in exchange for his paintings. The pretty building that served as Presbytery and then as the doctor’s residence, is now the police station, and it is here where we clear in at this French Overseas Department. We then move back aboard and sail across to neighboring Île St. Joseph. Here we had been told to report with the local Foreign Legion off-duty base. “La Légion Êtrangère”. We wave from outside their hut, unable to draw their attention. Finally, one scarfaced guy leaves the private party to come greet us holding a beer, and tells us to feel at home. Another friend with a broken nose walks out of the hut and shakes our hand. Funny contrast between these friendly dishevelled looking guys and the tidy, formal Gendarmes from Île Royale. In the middle of St. Joseph’s thick forest lie the ruins of the dreadful individual prisoner cells. The jungle is little by little eating and invading the buildings, and we see tree trunks suffocating the walls and branches sticking out of doors. We go around the corridors in silence, taking photos. What a claustrophobic ambience! That same afternoon, we bring our hammock ashore and hang it between two trees in the secluded beach known as Plage de Marie Galante. Just before sunset, two enormous parrots that nest at the top of Île Royale’s lighthouse cut through the blue sky with their shrill squawks and their bright colored plumage. Alone the two of us in this dreamlike place, with a perfect view of the other two islands, I suddenly remember the phrase we read in an official brochure: “Ici on a mis l’enfer au paradis!”Here we have placed hell in paradise. So true!

Aquí nos presentamos a dar la entrada del barco a este departamento francés. Unos días más tarde, cruzamos a vela a St. Joseph, y visitamos las ruinas de las horrorosas celdas individuales de los condenados. La selva de a poco está invadiendo las construcciones y se ven troncos y ramas asomándose por las puertas sofocando las paredes. Recorremos los pasillos en silencio, sacando fotos y con sensación de claustrofobia. A la tarde bajamos nuestra hamaca paraguaya del barco y la colgamos entre dos cocoteros en la preciosa playita de la isla, conocida como Plage de Marie Galante. Antes del atardecer, un par de papagayos que habitan el Faro de l’Île Royale surcan el aire con sus estridentes graznidos y su plumaje multicolor. Sólos en este lugar de ensueño con una vista magnífica de las otras dos islas, recordamos la frase que leímos en un folleto oficial: “ Ici, on a mis l’enfer au paradis”. ...Aquí hemos colocado al infierno en el mismo paraíso. Vaya si es verdad!.

ea slugs – to the man on the street, this name probably does not ring a bell and certainly does no justice to the magnificence of some of these creatures. However, most divers who have encountered them, from beautiful tropical waters to cold murky seas have been amazed by them and curious to know them better. This group of animals encompasses nudibranchs, literally meaning ‘naked gills’, and other taxonomic groups that are often confused with them. Nudibranchs comprise more than 3000 species worldwide and, have colonized a great variety of habitats and exhibit almost as many shapes, sizes and colors. They breathe through gills that usually form a rosette on their backs and have tentacles on their head that are sensitive to smell, touch and taste. Although I have dived in a lot of different tropical and temperate zones, I have never been more amazed by nudibranchs’ diversity than when I was in Vietnam. This country is actually a perfect destination to observe underwater macro-life including small

Diving in association with a well known dive center, Rainbow Divers, located in Nha Trang in addition to operations on Whale Island, Phu Quoc and Con Dao allow the curious to discover this wonderful ‘hidden world’. I was stunned by the fact that even after a few months of leading dives, I still kept on being lucky enough to observe species that I had not seen before. What is fantastic about nudibranchs in Vietnam is the wide range of size they exhibit, from not much bigger than the eye of a needle to almost the size of a soccer ball. I personally had never seen nudibranchs that big in years of diving! I remember one day coming across one so big that I thought there was no way it was a nudibranch. Initially, I figured that it must be an anemone with retracted tentacles but as I came closer there was no doubting it anymore. Experts helped me identify it thanks to the photos I managed to take that day. It turned out to be a species that had not been described outside Indonesia! Another feature that nudibranchs exhibit is an

Others have magnificent rainbow-colored hues that attract the diver’s eyes like the fire hypselodoris. In fact, those sumptuous tones, derived from the food they eat, often make them an underwater photographer’s favorite. They help nudibranchs camouflage and sometimes are used to warn predators that they are poisonous. Their habitats, lifestyles and types of reproduction are just as diversified and amazing as their colors, although all known nudibranchs are carnivorous and hermaphroditic. Some sea slugs can even, like corals, use microscopic algae stored in their tissues to provide them with nutrients through photosynthesis. In Vietnam, sea slugs can virtually be spotted on any dive, and divers going to the busiest dive sites of Hon Mun Island Marine Park the shallow reefs of Moray Beach, Mama Anh Beach, and Seahorse Bay, to quote a few will see the more common species along with a variety of other sea creatures, including frogfish, devil scorpionfish, paperfish, flying gurnards and many others. However, more remote sites, such as the famous Three Kings, accessible from the Whale Island resort and Electric Nose, accessible via Nha Trang’s speedboats, exhibit perhaps an even higher number of nudibranch species as well as an even higher diversity. Some species are new to science and are still awaiting description. Those sites and many others in Vietnam also have enticing caves and swim throughs, which make scuba diving even more special and worthwhile experiencing. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced diver, you like busy towns such as Nha Trang or enjoy the peace and quiet of remote resorts like Whale Island, you’ll find that Vietnam’s diving has a lot to offer!
Vietnam’s finest - Vietnam, a country situated in Southeast Asia, bordered by Laos, Cambodia and China, is the 13th most populous country in the world. Despite this, it exhibits a uniquely high level of biodiversity and hosts many endemic species. It is also home to two UNESCO World Natural Heritage Sites - the stunning Hạ Long Bay and Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park - and six biosphere reserves. The country, slightly bigger than the state of New Mexico, exhibits a wide range of climates; although the dry and the wet or monsoon season are marked, local conditions vary quite a lot mostly because of topographical relief, the highest mountain reaching 3,143 meters. Vietnamese habitats are quite diversified as well and include mountains, tropical forests, and coastal areas which offer a wide range of tourist sights and outdoor activities. A lot of tourists make it to Vietnam to experience stunning scuba diving, thrilling motorcycle riding and cycling, intense trekking and hiking, superb sailing and kayaking. Busy cities such as Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh also have a vibrant nightlife. This, along with the low cost of living, its cultural diversity and the reputation of its cuisine, has made this country a renowned destination for backpackers and travellers, in general.

Masters of camouflage – when nothing is how it seems Nudibranchs are not the only sea creatures encountered in Vietnam that have mastered camouflage. A wide variety of marine organisms rely on it for survival. Attentive divers can regularly spot transparent shrimp hidden among anemones, frogfish resembling sponges and magnificent ornate ghost pipefish, which congregate in feather stars and many other organisms seeking to avoid predators. Camouflage can be the result of different strategies. Their colors matching the background can be derived from the diet of the organisms like in sea slugs, but more complex nervous systems can provide some animals with the possibility of adapting their appearance to match the animals’ surroundings almost instantly, like in cuttlefishes and octopi. Animals, such as the leaf scorpionfish, use mimicry - similarity to surrounding animals or plants achieved by appearance and behaviour among other things. Knowing all these strategies helps divers make the most of their dives by spotting even the best hidden organisms!

oat shoes may look like casual footwear, but savvy boaters know there’s more to a good shoe than a laid back fashion statement: the shoe also needs to fit your boating style. When it comes to boat shoes there are a few features that are crucial; a fine tread is needed to channel water away without picking up grit and the sole should be grippy enough to stick to a wet deck but should never leave a mark. Beyond those characteristics the qualities that make a good shoe will depend on the kind of boating you do:
