TANKOA S801 – THE LATEST PROJECT FOR AN 80 METER TAKES SHAPE

T

ankoa Yachts – the “boutique shipyard” based in Genoa – announces a new addition to their range with the presentation of the S801 (80m) concept, confirming their markedly innovative stance in the super and mega yacht sector. Tankoa S801 is a concept design based on an 80 meter long platform, extendable to 88 meters. She will have a beam of 13.50 meters, with a 2,500 gross tonnage in its 80 meter version. Just like sails in the wind, the decks float as if suspended between sea and sky. Code named “Golden Wings”, the S801 is Francesco Paszkowski’s vision of Italy’s most famous and beautiful ship of all time, the Amerigo Vespucci. Her superstructure seems to be literally suspended in mid-air, an interpretation of how the sailing ship

would appear if her rig were shifted aft. The reference to Amerigo Vespucci is an excellent way to pay tribute to one of the greatest Italian maritime explorers of the world. Innovative structures: steel, aluminum and titanium With advanced structures and applied technologies Tankoa Yachts intends to build one of the world’s most innovative yachts. The hull will be made of high tensile steel, with a light aluminum alloy superstructure. Other state of the art technologies, such as titanium reinforcements, presently under study, should be part of the package. The S801 concept project will be completed in the next few months with further development of technical specifications, principal system layouts and engineering.

Successful US debut of the Arcadia 85 in its American edition

ARNES International Luxury Real Estate and BARNES Global Art Advisory, in partnership with Bernard Markowicz organized a curated art exhibit to celebrate the opening of BARNES’ new offices in Miami. This special exhibit showcased artworks that celebrated Miami in various forms expressed through different media including sculptures, photos, and a very innovative artistic process called BildoReliefo implemented by artist Alain Godon. Miami is populated with architectural delights, notably boasting a unique concentration of Art Deco buildings in the world; this is what Alain Godon reflects upon with his special series about Miami, constructing his own universe with humor and colors. Anne Valverde is mastering the art of photography, and takes us on a voyage all over Miami with poetry and precision. Benedicte Blanc-Fontenille shares her latest works for the first time in Miami; her floating paintings show a colorful play with nature and water, reminding us of Monet’s Nymphéas. erretti presents the Ferretti 650, a cooperation between the Product Strategy Committee, Ferretti Group’s Marketing Department, AYT&D - Advanced Yachts Technology & Design, and Studio Zuccon International Project that officially made its debut at the autumn boat shows. The new project draws inspiration from the best seller Ferretti 620 from which it has inherited some of its most widely appreciated features like the waterline and the layout below deck. The Ferretti 650 immediately strikes the eye for its extensively renovated profile, which makes it a truly distinctive model. Its outer silhouette is characterized by an aerodynamic flybridge and new fiberglass decorative elements that “cut” through the profile of the glazing in the superstructure. An unprecedented decoration connects the windows of the three cabins below deck (the master stateroom, the guest cabin and the VIP cabin), which have been widened to let through even more natural light. The slender lines of the Ferretti Yachts 650 (which is 19.67 meters/64 feet 6 in. long and has a beam of 5.25 meters/17 feet 3 in.) are further enhanced by the yacht’s aft area, specifically designed to ensure easy and safe storage and launch of the tender while increasing the guests’ onboard comfort. A tender lift has been developed, capable of lifting an over-3-meter-long tender that can be lowered into the water by a meter with respect to its original position, thereby allowing the vessel to be davit-free: a valuable attribute which provides an incredible amount of additional living space on the flybridge and a large aft storage compartment for smaller water toys and other equipment. MAIN DECK Access to the cockpit is gained from the swimming platform, both from the port and starboard sides, thanks to two flights of steps

integrated into hull construction; a concealed electro-hydraulic gangway can also be installed on the starboard side upon request. At the center of the cockpit is a large fixed wooden table, completed by an aft sofa and four free standing chairs. On the starboard side, near the window which can be raised reinforcing the relationship between the salon and the cockpit, stands a practical cabinet with a wooden top, featuring several storage compartments and a pre-fit section for the ice-maker. On the starboard side there is positioned steps that lead to the flybridge, while on the opposite side a door opens towards the stairs to the crew quarters, which in the standard version includes a single cabin with separate head. A glazed door leads to the interior -a true open space towards the windshield- that is functional and extensively renovated in terms of furnishings and décor. Stepping in, the galley, located on the starboard side, has been strategically positioned to effectively connect the salon to the cockpit. Walking towards the bow, the dining area is located on the starboard side and is furnished with a large C-shaped sofa and an extendable glass table which seats up to six guests. A second sofa stands on the opposite side; behind it is the TV, which can also be concealed upon request. An optional refrigerator/bottle rack can also be fitted in this area. The pilot station can be found beyond the sofa port side. The stairs beside it provide access to the lower deck. LOWER DECK In this new project the underdeck layout draws inspiration from that of the Ferretti 620 and includes three double cabins and three separate heads, benefiting from the increased brightness thanks to the new glazing. The same is true for the anti-rolling gyro, which may be installed upon request. In this way, the distance between these systems and the owner’s bed is extended to approximately 7 meters, with four soundproof bulwarks and three rooms (the sailor’s cabin, the tank and the owner’s bathroom) in between. The Owner’s quarters are located amidships and include the cabin, a full-beam head behind the bed, and a walk-in wardrobe. Continuing along the corridor towards the bow, the guest cabin, with twin beds and separate head – which may also be used as a day toilet -, is located on the right, while the double VIP cabin with private bathroom and separate shower is at the extreme bow. FLYBRIDGE AND OUTDOOR AREAS The sporty design of the flybridge emphasizes cues that are found on the most recent models in the range, with the typical side handrails that can also be found on the Ferretti Yachts 690 and new 750. A new aerodynamic support bracket for the radar and satellite systems has been installed aft. The alternative version can be fitted with a discreet and streamlined, bronze-colored hard top which shelters the sundeck in its entirety. In the central part, is the second pilot station with the co-pilot seat on the left. Behind it, the bar area has been arranged to feature a grill and a sink; aft, the C-shaped sofa and the large table can seat up to 8 people. Another large sunbathing area can be found at the extreme bow, on the wheelhouse. DÉCOR AND MATERIALS Some of the main innovations in this new project regard its outfitting and interior décor. Centro Stile’s team of architects and designers has indeed extensively restyled the entire yacht through a painstaking study that has led to the selection of new materials, new color shades and, consequently, new color and material combinations - an outfitting that results in an even more dynamic, brighter, and yet extremely refined style. All furniture is in “Silver Oak”, a new grey-silver oak wood featuring a discreet and elegant striped pattern. Upon request by the owner – and in the first hull presented by the shipyard - all furniture tops are in leather, in the same shade of color as the timber. All solid wood details – i.e. furniture edges and frames -, are featured in a

The main deck ceiling pattern has been entirely restyled and adds even more personality to the interiors with alternating horizontal stripes of ivory-shade leather and polished lacquered material, where the spotlights have been installed. The entire lighting system on the first Ferretti Yachts 650 uses LED technology, both on the main and lower decks. Onboard systems have been modified by installing soft-touch switches, thereby applying on this 65-footer a technical feature that has been exclusive to larger yachts only.

Ferretti Yachts 650 is equipped with a pair of CAT C18, a type of highly reliable engines ensuring very consistent performances, which in this case are perfectly in line with those of the Ferretti Yachts range. In the standard engine configuration - a pair of 1015 mhp C18 engines – the FY650 can indeed reach a cruising speed of 27 knots and a maximum speed of 30.5 knots. The optional engines (1150 mhp), in turn, can push the yacht to a cruising speed of 30 knots and a top speed of 33 knots. The range is 275 and 245 nautical miles, respectively, at maximum speed, and 290 and 270 nautical miles, respectively, at cruising speed (preliminary data).

t’s been 50 years since William Grant & Sons, maker of premium, single malt Scotch brands The Balvenie and Glenfiddich first arrived in America from the Speyside region of Northern Scotland, an area known for its stunning sailing and waterways, particularly nearby the islands of the Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland. For over 125 years, the Gordon family has independently owned and operated the business. “As a family run company we’ve always challenged established whisky-making norms because we care personally about the quality of our single malts,” asserted Peter Gordon, Glenfiddich’s company director and great-great grandson of the original founder William Grant. “We cherish our independence because it allows us to innovate and create superior whiskies.” These days, there are only around 100 active distilleries in

process begins with malting and germination where enzymes break down barley into soluble sugars that will become alcohol down the road. When the malt is dry and grounded in grist, it heads to the mashing stage where hot water is added to it in enormous, wooden mash tuns. The liquid, or “wort,” then goes to the subsequent step called “washback,” which increases fermentation as yeast slowly transforms wort into wash (now alcoholic). The key step that prevents this two-week old concoction from being called beer is distillation. This drastically increases the wash’s alcohol percentage using highly advanced, copper pot stills. Glenfiddich distills all its batches twice; the second time around using spirit stills and monitoring precision of quality and consistency using a hydrometer. The whisky is then sent to highly organized warehouses where it’s stored in European (sherry) or American (bourbon) oak casks to mature for three years. Once mature, the whiskies are combined in marrying tuns and then warehoused and aged for sometimes up to 40 years. Glenfiddich’s distillery also has its own cooperage, one of only a handful of its kind in the world, where rare artisans repair and construct over a 100 casks daily that store the whisky and give it as much as 65% of its flavor during maturation. This past October, in conjunction with its special 50th anniversary, Glenfiddich beefed up its exclusive portfolio with a limited edition of 26 year-old dram, Glenfiddich Excellence 26 Year Old. At $499.99 a bottle, it’s quite a love letter to Scotch whisky aficionados.

An expedition over the NW Pacific

t was early May as we arrived in Majuro, The Marshall Islands to join S/Y Sea Dragon, a 72 ft ex-racing sloop built to sail around the world against the prevailing winds. After retirement from the racing scene, Sea Dragon was bought by Pangaea Explorations as a platform for research and education on marine issues. On this expedition, organized by 5Gyres and Algalita Marine Foundation based in California, our goal was to sail from The Marshall Islands to Japan and then to Hawaii to study the amount of plastic floating on the surface of the ocean. Covering a total distance of 7,500 sea miles, we first visited the NW Pacific Gyre, and in the second part of the expedition we studied the debris drifting east towards North America after the 2011 Japanese Tsunami. Islands where we dodged numerous reefs inside the lagoon, clearing the island by 10 am. It was important to leave in the morning, while the sun was still behind us in order to avoid navigating through the challenging coral reef on our way out of the lagoon with the sun in our eyes. Once in clear water, we pointed our bow to the NW and started our voyage towards Japan. Our crew of fourteen was a wonderful mix of sailors, scientists, journalists, film makers, students and even plastic manufacturers from all over the world: US, Bermuda, Canada, Mexico, The Bahamas, Hawaii, South Korea, Hong Kong, Australia, Brazil, England and France. The on-board discussions produced an interesting exchange of ideas. Our course from the Marshall Islands to Japan, would take us right through the center of the NW Pacific Gyre (vortex of revolving current) which is 600 miles wide and where we expected to find most of the plastic accumulation. There are five main gyres around the world, two in the Pacific, two in the Atlantic, and one in the Indian Ocean. Sadly, all five contain vast quantities of swirling plastic debris. These revolving currents flow clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and anti-clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. Over time, with the effect of

Our course from the Marshall Islands to Japan, would take us right through the center of the NW Pacific Gyre (vortex of revolving current) which is 600 miles wide and where we expected to find most of the plastic accumulation. the sun and salt-water, these plastics break down into minute particles forming a confetti-like layer across the surface of our oceans. Once in International waters, we started to collect samples of these plastic particles using two types of trawls. One was a high speed trawl which we towed 24 hours a day at up to 8 knots of boat speed. The other was the slow trawl, which we towed for one hour every fifty sea miles at 2 to 3 knots. This tow had a meter to quantify the flow of water and allowed us to calculate plastic quantities per area. Both tows were working at the surface level. We are all familiar with plastic as we all use it and even though it has only been around for about 50 years, its versatility has revolutionized our lives. Once discarded, it ends up in landfills and eventually much of it in the sea where it floats and starts to break down. Marine life eat it and many marine animals die from ingesting it. As it breaks down, it forms what we know as micro plastics, of which we are yet to fully understand their effect on marine life. The tows, allowed us to collect the minute floating plastic particles and during daylight hours we were also able to conduct visual observations which enabled us to spot the larger pieces of plastic. Desafortunadamente estas cinco regiones de vortex oceánico contienen grandes cantidades de plástico. Curiosamente, estas corrientes oceánicas giran de izquierda a derecha en el hemisferio norte y de derecha a izquierda en el hemisferio sur. composed of discarded fishing nets, tangled up with a multitude of plastic debris. In one of them, we found five toothbrushes. Once we approached the gyre, we noticed a sharp increase in plastic. So far 100% of the tows showed micro plastics. The visual observations noted discarded fishing buoys to plastic buckets, styrofoam, water bottles, containers, tooth brushes, plastic caps, plastic toys, and many unidentified pieces. Where does it all come from? A few were easily identified by Japanese lettering. How long had they been floating in the sea? What happens to the smaller pieces? We do know fish eat them because we found numerous pieces of plastic inside their ’ stomachs. This is particularly concerning because plastic absorbs different man-made pollutants. In turn, we eat the fish and so we also absorb the pollutants into our own bodies. One day we encountered a particularly large net ball. From underwater, we were able to see the many different reef fish and small invertebrates had made this floating island their home. After inspecting it and filming it underwater, we pulled it on deck to have a closer look. It took many long hours to dissect it piece by piece. Everything had to be stored and labeled for future analysis; invertebrates, small fish, a variety of plastic pieces and 81 different samples of rope! As world population increases exponentially, so does the production of plastic. We have manufactured more plastic in the last 10 years than in the whole last century, which is a frightening thought when you realize that even if you recycle it, those plastic particles last forever.

En varias ocasiones nos encontramos conglomeraciones de plástico enredadas en redes de pesca a la deriva las cuales recuperamos para su identificación. En una encontramos 5 cepillos de dientes entre otras cosas!. Así mismo, descubrimos una gran cantidad de especies marinas que provenían de costas lejanas. Una vez que nos aproximamos al área del vortex, observamos un aumento de plástico. Hasta entonces, en el 100% de los arrastres encontramos partículas de micro plásticos. Encontramos desde boyas de pesca, cubos de plástico, espuma de polietireno de todos los tamaños, botellas de agua, juguetes e inclusive más cepillos de dientes. Logistically it would be impossible to extract all the plastic that is already in the ocean but what about the new plastic that is coming into the ocean every day? As we approached Japan and the Kuroshio current, the amount of plastic sharply increased. Later, having spent time in Japan, we witnessed how the Japanese use a vast amount of plastic in everyday life. It is everywhere. Arriving in Japan was an interesting experience as we entered the Bay of Tokyo, one of the busiest ports in the world and thus very closely monitored by traffic control. We were escorted by a coastguard ship to the outside of one of the biggest marinas in Yokohama harbor where twenty uniformed officials were waiting to come onboard. Clearance took several hours. It had taken us eighteen and a half days to reach Japan and we were happy to finish the first leg. We had just witnessed first-hand something that most people are tragically unaware of - quite how much plastic REALLY is floating in the sea. On this first leg, we counted one piece of large plastic every eight minutes. Equally terrifying was the revelation that over the 3,500 sea miles we’d just covered, 100% of the tow samples which were checked every hour 24/7 contained plastic particles. It was now the beginning of June and the hurricane season in the Pacific had started. Our departure from Japan was delayed several days by the first typhoon of the season, ‘Mawar’ which passed 100 miles from the entrance of Tokyo Bay reaching 100 mph winds. As soon as the storm had passed, we left Yokohama with the sea still quite messy. We concentrated on sailing fast on an easterly direction and away from the usual path of these unwanted storms. Keeping a careful watch on the track of ‘Mawar’, four days after our departure, another typhoon was brewing behind us. We were now in between both of them. For this reason we decided to go more south than north to observe the progress of the new hurricane. The added purpose of this second leg, as we mentioned before, was to observe the appearance of debris originated from the tsunami that devastated Japan the previous year. We had a computer generated model that analyzed the dispersion and movement of the debris affected by wind and current. Due to the two hurricanes, we were forced to stay in the southern part of the field ( 30 to 32 N ) rather than in the middle of the field ( between 35 to 38 N ). This decision paid off well as we watched the two storms move north and east of us. | 54 | www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com

Después de inspeccionarlo y habiéndolo filmado bajo el agua, decidimos subirlo a cubierta para identificarlo con más detenimiento. Nos tomó muchas horas separar y desenredar la red y sus ocupantes. On this leg, we covered 4,500 sea miles. It’s a long way from anywhere once you leave Japan, and the more easterly you go, the further you are away from humanity and land. The ever present plastic continued to appear, and we saw an average of one larger piece of plastic every three and a half minutes. We also found a half sunken Japanese fishing boat floating about, a small car tire, pieces of flooring, and endless pieces of plastic coming from the west. The strongest memory of this passage was the sense of being away from civilization and land. The Pacific is a big ocean, especially when you travel by sail. Endless nights with only wind and sea. The days were accompanied by the ever present albatross which are amazing to watch flying alongside the boat. Such a magnificent sight in the blue sky, gliding effortlessly and almost touching the sea surface. Sadly, they are also dying due to plastic ingestion. Sea birds,

dolphins, turtles, fish, even whales are dying because of the presence of plastic in the ocean. What took millions of years to evolve is being wiped out in only a couple of generations. The last 1000 miles were upwind and in quite strong trade winds. Even with clear skies, the relentless wind didn’t let off making it difficult to pass and continue eastward. As we arrived in Honolulu in the evening, we did not want to go straight onto the dock after one month at sea so we anchored in front of the Mauna Loa under a beautiful full moon. It was time to reflect and reconsider everything. What we have seen cannot just be dismissed. We spent many hours that night looking at the moon and the crater of the volcano searching for answers. Tristemente muchas aves marinas así como delfines, tortugas, peces e inclusive ballenas están muriendo por la presencia de plástico en el océano. Lo más triste es que lo que tomó millones de años de evolución, lo estamos destruyendo en tan solo dos generaciones. Las últimas 1000 millas fueron contra vientos alisios bastantes fuertes. Inclusive con cielos despejados, el viento no amainó lo cual hizo nuestro progreso hacia el este bastante difícil. Eventualmente llegamos a Honolulu en la noche. No quisimos atracar directamente en el muelle después de un mes en alta mar, sino que fondeamos frente al volcán Mauna Loa con la luna llena. Lo que acabamos de experimentar no lo podíamos simplemente olvidar, era momento de reflexionar. Pasamos varias horas mirando el volcán y la luna buscando respuestas. ADK Packbasket

L

ike most boaters, I’m always on the hunt for the perfect boat bag. And as a cruising sailor, I know that anything that I bring onboard must have more than one use. The newest design from ADK Packworks happens to fit the bill. First a short disclosure: I LOVE bags. But I especially love bags that can multitask as well as I do. With that said, when I came across the Packbasket by ADK, I just had to have one. (Well… make that two. My husband said that he wants one as well). What makes this bag different from the rest of the pack? Functionality and a great design. The exceptionally versatile Papckbasket was inspired by the 150-year-old Adirondack baskets used to carry heavy loads in the mountains. “There has been no evolution in the reusable grocery bag over the years and we felt that there needed to be an alternate solution that was still environmentally conscious, but increased the overall function ability as well. We came up with the inspiration for our original bag from the most timeless utility pack ever invented, the Adirondack pack basket from upstate New York”. Originally made out of wood, the ADK pack

basket was special because of its ability to stand up straight. “A typical reusable grocery bag today lacks structure, but the stand-alone design of The Packbasket allows for improved performance when loading and unloading, which also lets you pack each bag more efficiently,” said Doug Rumbough, co-founder of Vergennes, Vermontbased ADK Packworks. The Packbasket, which is about the size of your average paper grocery bag (15 inches X 11.5 inches X 8 inches), includes a semi-rigid internal frame that can also be removed for washing. It folds flat for easy storage and is lightweight, made from durable ripstop nylon, eco-friendly and… (wait there’s more!). It can be used either with the super-strong handles, the shoulder strap, the backpack attachment, or as panniers for your bicycle with the addition of the Bicycle Pannier System. Plus you can also add the handy Packbasket Cooler Liner ($6) for those provisioning trips ashore. The basic model starts at $29.99. The company just released two new styles: the Packbasket Canvas and the Packbasket Prints. Both would make a great gift!

DAIQUIRI INGREDIENTS: 2 parts BACARDÍ Superior rum 1 part freshly squeezed lime juice 2 tsps sugar METHOD: Place sugar and freshly pressed lime juice into a cocktail shaker and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Then pour in the BACARDÍ Superior rum and fill the shaker with halfcubed ice, followed by some halfcrushed ice. Place the lid on the shaker and shake vigorously until thoroughly chilled. Finally, strain through a fine tea strainer into a chilled cocktail glass.

INGREDIENTES 2 partes de ron BACARDÍ Superior 1 parte de zumo de lima 2 cucharaditas de azúcar MÉTODO Poner el zumo de lima con el azúcar en una coctelera y mezclar bien hasta disolver el azúcar.
