Travelers Can Explore Ancient Roman Shipwrecks In New Deep-Sea Archeology Adventure

T

his summer travelers can become underwater explorers to aid subsea archeologists to document and photograph three ancient Roman shipwrecks that sank some 2,000 years ago near Panarea in the Aeolian Islands off Italy. Eight one-week missions begin June 20 and continue through August 21, 2015. The not-for-profit Aurora Trust Foundation, in conjunction with SubSea Explorers, a marine archeology expedition company, and U-Boat Worx, a Dutch mini-submarine manufacturer, offers the program. “This is a real bucket-list adventure,” said Aurora co-founder Ian Koblick. “Participants will become authentic explorers and examine ancient Roman shipwrecks only a few have ever witnessed.” Each week participants can undergo three two-hour missions in the $3 million submarine built with 360-degree views. The sub can carry two guests who will work with a marine archeologist and the sub’s pilot. Together, they will have the opportunity to uncover the mysteries of the wrecks, whose wooden structures have long since deteriorated but whose amphora/cargo remains intact. I

t took seventeen years to rebuild an exact replica of famous French vessel Hermione, that once fought alongside American ships to support their battle for independence in the 18th-century. Two hundred years later, the Hermione is back and ready to set sail to America on a historic journey. Let’s go back in time to 1779, the year that would seal the destiny of the Hermione, a brand new vessel built under the orders of French King Louis XVI. Shortly after the declaration of independence from the United States, French Marquis Lafayette, who had enrolled to fight next to the US “insurgents”, partisans of the independence, returns to France to request support from King Louis XVI who fourteen years later, following the French revolution, would be beheaded, marking the end of the long lasting French monarchy. Lafayette manages to obtain from the King military and financial support for General Washington’s troops, fighting to free the country from British control. On March 1780, he sets sail to Boston to inform General Washington that reinforcement is on the way, onboard of a brand new vessel: the Hermione. For eighteen months, the Hermione would aggressively fight next to the Americans, participating in the battles of Chesapeake Bay and Yorktown, decisive victories on the path to US independence. Thirteen years after her glorious journey to America, engaged yet in another battle against Britain, the

Hermione sails through shallow waters along the coast of Brittany and tragically sinks a couple of hours later. In 1994, some two hundred years later, as a tribute to Lafayette and his victories aboard the Hermione, a group of passionate historians and boat lovers decided to reconstruct the vessel. They set themselves a challenge: to rebuild an exact replica of the Hermione with the same material, structure and construction methods used in 18thcentury craftsmanship. The ship’s construction started in 1997 in Rochefort, France, and took over seventeen years to finally launch in 2014 a magnificent 12 pounder vessel: the new Hermione is a 3 mast 125 foot long vessel, with a hull made entirely of oak carefully selected from more than 2000 oak trees of French forests, and is equipped with 34 (armed) canons. In April 2015, the Hermione will set sail to America on a commemorative trip to follow Lafayette’s path. The vessel will function the same way it used to two hundred years ago: everything is manual and the 79 crew members face a difficult challenge ahead as they learn to navigate using the method of their ancestors. It will be equipped with old-fashion riggings, pullets and sails but no winches. Expected to climb onto the rigging of the masts up to 147 feet high, the crew will need to be in perfect physical condition to maneuver the vessel, and fear of heights is not an option! For security and compliance reasons, some modern equipment will be added on the boat which will help with daily life conditions of the crew while at sea. The Hermione’s first destination will be the symbolic port of Yorktown, where General Washington won an important battle against England with the help of the French army. She will then navigate to New York and Boston, stopping on the way in Baltimore, Philadelphia and other large ports on the East coast. Her last stop on North America will be in Canada, before she sails back to France for a well deserved rest. At each stage of the journey, the vessel will be open for viewing and tours will be organized to teach visitors ancient sailing practices and show them the complex architecture of masts and rigging. Over many decades, Tiara Yachts has constantly incorporated new wave technology into its high quality line-up of cruisers and flybridge vessels. Its new 50 Flybridge and 44 Coupe are perpetuating that trend of efficient running, bigwater capable and highly functional cruising yachts. “We’re known for innovation, not just to be different, but with function and meaning to our customer. Tiara was the first North American company to develop our product around IPS technology when it was first introduced 10 years ago. The primary attributes, then and now, were ease of docking and an overall improvement with performance and range. Today’s Tiaras are now outfitted with the Volvo’s brand new Full Glass Cockpit package. It’s a state-of–the art system with all engine data, alarms and a full complement of Garmin electronics integrated to a new level,” reports Tiara’s CEO, Tom Slikkers. The 50 Flybridge is a two-cabin layout, with an optional third cabin floor plan. Her Tiara-distinctive, cored-hull carries a five-year warranty and is available in an array of optional custom colors. The 725hp Volvo diesels are affixed atop encapsulated wood and foam-core stringers and paired to compatible IPS drives. Tiara has packaged joystick technology and the Full Glass Cockpit package. “The combination allows our design team to provide an enhanced helm experience and interface in a smaller, cleaner looking package. Using the joystick to operate the boat at wide-open throttle is

Indeed, both the helm areas—there’s an option for a cockpit controller as well—are ergonomically designed with every system and gauge easily observed or activated. The glass displays on the helm leave no guesswork when it comes to the vessels vital statistics whether engine or navigation related. The lower station has a Stidd helm chair with the Garmin controls incorporated into the starboard side armrest. On the outboard flat, below and in front of the armrest, the throttles and joystick control are intuitively placed. It’s a right-handed world we live in. There’s plenty more real estate for additional accessories on the low glare dash for items such as a spot light control and a Lewmar windlass activator (the windlass itself is nicely concealed below the rub rail forward.) The aluminum-framed, forward windshield is constructed with three curved panels that provide great visibility. The sweep of the windshield flows into the hardtop creating a handsome silhouette. Docking with the joystick and the all-encompassing visibility should be an easy task. The flybridge station is similarly outfitted. “Simply put, the flybridge layout significantly increases the exterior usable space. There are some geographical areas where a flybridge model is still the preferred configuration. While the upper station provides a great additional command position, our cruising customers have communicated to us that they don’t want to be isolated. We’ve addressed this by surrounding both helm positions with a social zone, thus naturally creating a comfortable setting where the helmsman can be surrounded by family and friends,” states Slikkers. To port is the smartly designed galley with more than adequate storage for cruising, under-counter refrigerator/freezer drawers and entertaining friendly, spacious Corian countertops. The joinery and drawers are of exacting tolerances, closing easily and tightly. Inserts for the sink tops have dedicated slide storage compartments. An optional wine cooler and/or icemaker can be installed. Marine Air units proficiently cool the interior. It’s one step up to the teak-soled saloon proper. There’s a portside settee with storage, a high-gloss teak table with hinged expanding top and a single chair with a reversible backrest. The shift aft or forward allows it to serve as a companion seat while underway. A 40-inch television rises from and lowers into a cabinet starboard side. Ambient light abounds from sliding side windows; duette blinds are there for privacy as requested. The master and VIP are just steps below the saloon. The VIP forward has private access to the associated large head and an innovative scissor-style berth design. It’s really very sweet. The berth has a twin V-design with capability to transform into a queen by merely sliding the two together. The full-beam master sits beneath the saloon with an athwartship queen berth. The hull windows effectively light these accommodations and the nice part is that they have opening ports within for fresh air. It you choose the three-stateroom layout, a washer/dryer is installed in the master. In my opinion, it’s an efficient use of space with the benefit of an additional cabin. The appropriate storage in the way of drawers and hanging lockers will keep owners happy. Overhead skylights, with privacy panels when desired, allow light in from the saloon. The doors throughout the vessel offer the required privacy and are full frame. The flybridge deck and cockpit offer cruising Tiara owners all the bells and whistles required for fun in the sun. easy to transit with teak treads and floating steps. There’s a hatch above to secure the opening for safety. Again, the helm is concise and outfitted similarly to the lower station. The entertainment center is capable of keeping the beverages flowing for a large group and the lounges will accommodate the same. Similar seating is found in the cockpit area complete with a fiberglass hi-lo table. There is LED lighting, a sound system and speakers. Behind the cockpit is a wide and deep swim platform. There’s access to a trunk-style storage area and a grill embedded in the transom. There are options for either a hydraulic swim platform or dedicated lift. “In the Bahamas, Europe, Caribbean and both coasts of the United States, Tiara has given more weight to the yachting platform in recent years, especially with the introduction of the new Coupe and Flybridge series. Our philosophy is simply the desire to meet the demands of the marketplace and more specifically the demands of Tiara customers. We feel that the cruising market, as a whole, provides a great opportunity for growth,” said Slikkers in regards to the emphasis the company is putting towards cruising. The company reports the 50 Flybridge will cruise at a smidge under 25 knots, burning under 50 gph. That’s efficient cruising for a 45,000-plus-pound yacht. “The 50 has great sea keeping abilities. We decided early in the development process to use our bluewater hulls and drivelines. A 13.5kW Onan diesel generator powers her systems. “Tiara has long built a reputation for high quality. That translates to a great ride, strong performance, durability, predictability and an enjoyable ownership experience. We execute our products to a higher standard, one our dealers and customers will attest to,” says Slikkers. Having been on many Tiaras over the years, there’s little to dispute in that statement.

Tiara 44 Coupe

T

he 44 Coupe is built with the same components, lay-up and construction techniques in a more compact express-style cruiser. The Volvo Glass Cockpit and Joystick controls are right at home at the helm that’s positioned starboard side and under the powered sunroof. The manufacturer supplied performance data states her 435hp Volvo diesels have the Coupe running quite comfortably at slightly over 22 knots at 3000 rpm burning a very miserly 31.4 gallons per hour. At wide-open throttle (3600 rpm) she’ll hit over 30 knots. The 44 is able to high cruise at 3300 rpm and that will produce a quick 26.8 knots. The decks and cockpit feature Tiara’s custom diamond pattern that is both effective and easy on bare feet. Her molded top meets the aluminum frame windshield forward, that’s outfitted with two large windshield wipers. The enclosure’s surface remains sleek and unencumbered aft until the navigational antennas and steaming light, keeping the sporty Coupe styling intact. Tiara engineering is evident in the engine compartment with terrific accessibility around the engines and good storage potential outboard of both engines. The vast bank of batteries is centerline, keeping the weight where it should be. The galley, to starboard, has all the proper appliances in place under the Corian counter and has good storage for her size. Sleeping quarters will keep owner and guests quite comfortable. The master forward has a privacy door that lives up to its billing. Its interior design is upbeat, comfortably outfitted with soft goods and has a dedicated 8,000 BTU air conditioning unit. It’s well lit, both naturally and electrically. The dedicated head has a large stall

shower. The VIP has opening ports, separate air conditioning unit and skylight. There’s no skimping on features for entertaining. The aft cockpit is complete with a sound system, LED lighting, ample lounges and a teak cocktail table. The swim platform is a full 60 inches and there’s access to a standard transom shower. A large sun pad will be a favorite perched on the foredeck. The 44 Coupe offers the cruising yachtsman big boat performance and comfort in a compact and efficient platform.

early fifty years ago, Pekka Koskenkyla built the first Swan, a 36-foot Sparkman & Stevens design that, according to the builder, came out of the box race ready. Ninety of those international regatta winners were eventually built. Germán Frers assumed Nautor’s Swan’s design duties in 1982, and builder and designer have now collaborated on over 700 yachts. Chessie is Nautor’s Swan’s newest launch, an 80-foot flush deck (FD) layout. This maxi-cruiser is a stunning representation of the company’s workmanship and its “less is more” philosophy. Her sweeping, clean lines and uncluttered top deck make this high performance cruiser user friendly for owners and guests. The 80 FD is also available in a semi-raised (S) and raised saloon (RS) version. A top priority for Nautor’s Swan is keeping displacement to minimalist levels and strength of construction to their highest when performance is the mission. They utilize a foam-core, carbon fiber layup in the hull to achieve those goals. The hull has a near plumb bow, then, according to the company, beneath the waterline, it opens to a modest beam carried aft with a broad flat section towards the stern. She sports a T-shaped bulb keel with a deep balanced rudder. Chessie’s aft cockpit is situated behind the twin steering stations and forward from her open transom; there’s a closed transom option. A second cockpit is positioned centerline towards the bow and is deemed a social area with ample, comfortable seating and access to the cabin below. The 80 FD has wonderfully wide and unencumbered sidedecks looking down from a bosun’s chair view. There’s plenty of opening

Nautor’s Swan has three separate production locales, each highly specialized in their tasks. Each facet of design and construction is dissected down to the most minute accent. Heini Gustafsson is in charge of the interiors and was quoted about passionate attention to detail right down to, “… the color of the stitching on a leather belt inside a bookshelf or the light that switches on inside a small locker for crystal glasses.” | 40 | www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com

It’s this attention to seemingly low-level and unimportant ornaments the reason for the well-earned accolades. Chessie’s elegant interior is a perfect blend of symmetry and beauty. The joinery is varnished teak. The company even saves a sample to ensure a perfect match if future repairs are needed. Wherever possible, the builder uses weight-saving sandwich veneers. (The mast and boom are strong and lightweight carbon fiber.) Each owner has choices with the floor plan, though the two constants are full-beam saloon and crew quarters positioned far forward. The master cabin can be positioned forward or aft. The Swan 80 has two

C

airns is considered by many to be the final cruising stop when sailing the Coral Coast of Australia. If you’re out for the season, it’s a popular turning back point -a place to wait for the steady trade winds to change direction so you can head back to a southern port before cyclone season. If you’re carrying on to Southeast Asia, it’s often the final port before Darwin -a good place for provisioning and getting boat work done before leaping off to Indonesia. But if you’re intrepid, Cairns can be the first stop of an intriguing cruising ground -one that includes a captivating history and abundant wildlife. When we pulled into Cairns, we thought our stay would be brief. We had a sail that needed repair and we wanted to have our dive gear serviced, but mostly we were eager to keep going. It turned out that Cairns had that welcoming feel of the last outpost on the edge of a remote wilderness. With great restaurants and nightlife, and a gorgeous waterfront park, it was clear this little city is a destination in itself and not just a stepping off point for the Great Barrier Reef. And while the reef is the obvious draw, we discovered it’s not the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in the area; it turns out that the tropical rainforest which includes the famous Daintree National Park is just up the road. With our sail in the loft, we decided to do a little land-based exploring. For one trip we rented a car and headed into the Mossman Gorge, which is part of the Daintree. The rainforest walk took us on a suspension bridge over the river and through a forest of giant fig trees and spurwood. We kept an eye out for the cassowary bird, among the bird’s nest and elkhorn ferns but didn’t get lucky (or unlucky—these giant birds are said to be aggressive). Our next adventure was on the Skyrail—a fantastic 7km gondola ride over a forest of candlenut, corkwood, native olive and false red sandalwood trees. Soaring over the rainforest gives you a unique perspective. We were glued to our windows looking down—especially as a gorge and Barron Falls came into view. The trip ends in the pretty town of Karanda, the perfect place for lunch and to buy gorgeous aboriginal artwork as a souvenir before we headed back to Cairns on the historic railway.

Con nuestra vela en la velería, decidimos explorar un poco la zona. Alquilamos un auto y nos dirigimos hacia Mossman Gorge, que es parte de Daintree. La caminata por la selva nos llevó a un puente colgante sobre el río y a través de un bosque de higueras gigantes. Tourist-friendly Cairns was tough to say goodbye to, but we’d been watching the weather looking for perfect conditions. One of our big goals on the trip was to anchor and dive on the outer reef. We’d already been sailing north inside the Great Barrier Reef for hundreds of miles, but south of Cairns the reef is a bit thin and it’s well off shore. Once you hit Cairns though, the reef starts to get closer to the mainland thus making it easier to visit. To anchor on the reef you need at least a few days of sustained calm. Otherwise you’ll find yourself anchored in heaving seas with invisible (but deadly) reef all around you. This is where Captain Cook wrecked his ship on Endeavour Reef, after all. Lots of sailors who pass through this area are content with anchoring behind islands and exploring the inner reefs. But we really wanted the experience of dropping our hook in what looked like the middle of the ocean, miles from land. So with settled weather forecast we set off for Low Island and then Turtle Bay on Tongue Reef. The reward was anchoring in an endless expanse of sea and diving in. When the wind started to rise it was time to turn north. The balance with cruising is to go slowly enough to see what you want, without bumping into the seasons that guide your movement from one place to the next. Feeling the need to

keep moving meant picking and choosing our stops. Cooktown, where Captain Cook repaired his ship, wasn’t an essential stop (though it was conveniently on the way to Lizard Island). But who’s going to turn down the chance to pose with a large assortment of Cook statues and monuments, their numbers rivalling both the number of pubs in the town and potentially the number of residents as well? Lizard Island turned out to be both a fantastic and haunting stop. One of its features is the ruins of Mary Watson’s cabin. In 1881, the young woman, her baby and a Chinese worker escaped their home in a tub after Aboriginal people drove them off the island. They survived a voyage into a nearby island where they later died of thirst. She became a bit of a folk-hero, a symbol of Australian strength in adversity. Original photos showed ruins that included a good portion of a wall. What we saw was a heap of stones. Not surprising; a category 5 cyclone sat over the island for 11 hours in April 2014—uprooting many of the trees, closing the famed resort and damaging the vital reef research station. The cyclone’s surge also tore through the pristine coral—much of it containing critical research projects. But by the time we arrived, the research center was up and running, the resort was being

rebuilt and nothing could damage the stunning view from the top of Cook’s lookout. Despite the coral loss, the reef still sports heaps of life; big diverse fish, six varieties of giant clams, turtles, rays, sharks and just two weeks before we visited a crocodile was even sighted. Big salt water crocodiles are a hazard of the coast. And while we expected to see them in out of the way places, we didn’t expect them in the more populated areas. They do what they want though—and while we never saw one, we did see enough signs to keep us cautious. From Lizard Island the next natural stop is Cape Melville; a windy cape where piles of huge boulders make it look like Australia is an unfinished construction site. But 15 miles beyond that, is the Flinder’s Group and a national park called Yindayin, on Stanley Island, that contains some of the world’s most remarkable Aboriginal cave paintings. Each year, only a handful of boaters make their way to Yindayin. But, the reward for going out of your way is a chance to see

cave walls displaying wondrous sailing ships: painted in red and outlined in white, some ships have the distinct sterns of 18th century European galleons; while others have the exotic eastern curves of Macassan praus; still others bring to mind early 16th century Portuguese ships. Layered with the ships are other signs of daily life: an eagle ray, crocodiles, dugongs and turtles. The art, which captures the moment of Western contact with the oldest culture in the world, is exceptional and (unless you know to search for it) virtually forgotten. After we sailed past Cape York, we anchored and hiked out to the top of Australia just to say we could. Darwin was still several hundred miles away so our passages became longer. During the long nights, the sky was bright with stars and each day we had regular visits from dolphins. After we crossed the Gulf of Carpentaria, the earth turned deep red with bauxite. Snug anchorages filled with bird and sea life made us wish we could keep exploring, but our provisions were running out and the time had come to head into the little city of Darwin.

I

tend to learn about a country through its food; the main courses, the spices, the delicacies—all seem to reflect its landscape and its people. But Australia, with seemingly no national cuisine, was a gastronomic mystery. When we were first sailing along Australia’s Coral Coast, I asked about its food. In one restaurant, listed as Modern Australian, we were served kanga bangas (kangaroo sausages) and local beer by cheerful people with a nearincomprehensible accent who explained that barbie was all we needed to know. Then I was given a lead, “have you heard of bush tucker?” Barbequed sausages, it turns out, were actually almost that: bush tucker. Kangaroo is a traditional indigenous food that is, perhaps, a bit like Australia itself: familiar, but not. But there was something elemental missing. My search took me to Ochre Restaurant in Cairns, owned by Chef Craig Squire, and where bush tucker, traditional foods that have been updated for the modern palate, come served with the story of their origin. The restaurant itself has a clean contemporary design that’s styled to reflect the colors of the outback; from the sunset shaded accents to the earth red walls and natural timber features. The patrons are a mix of curious tourists and locals who appreciate a good meal.

Using traditional, seasonal ingredients, the menu reads like a guide to Australia. We debated dishes that included wattle seeds (a variety of acacia seed collected by Aborigines west of the Great Divide that have a nutty, coffee-like flavor), bush tomatoes, native pear and Illawarra plums. Settling on the Australian Antipasto Platter to start, we tucked into emu Carpaccio, crocodile wontons with pepper jam and kangaroo terrine with pickled Kakadu plum. Each taste seemed to bring Australia more clearly into focus, though this could’ve been a reaction to eating the country’s coat of arms (emu and kangaroo) on one plate. Our mains, equally unique and delicious, highlighted the full range of Australia’s offerings; from salt and pepper crocodile and prawns to Morton Bay Bugs (a type of slipper lobster) and lamb with a bush tomato sauce. Ochre manages to showcase native ingredients without any gimmicks or hype. t’s 6.30 pm, just after sunset and I am sitting on a beach in southeast Australia, about to witness an amazing sight. Night after night during breeding season, around the same time, the world’s smallest penguins leave the water after a full day of fishing to cross the beach and reclaim the burrows they reproduce in. Group after group, they cautiously find their way back home to hungry chicks waiting for their parents to return with bellyfuls of fish. It’s August, the beginning of chick rearing. After having found and consolidated their burrows, the pairs, often faithful, have laid two eggs and incubated them for a bit more than a month. While chicks are young they cannot regulate their own temperature, so at least one parent needs to stay at the nest to keep them warm and protect them against predators. The other parent leaves at first light to go fishing with the mission to bring back enough food to sustain the offspring’s growth.

After about two weeks, when the chicks are old enough, both parents may leave the nest for a day or even more, coming back less often to feed the patient little ones. If environmental conditions are good enough, pairs will attempt to breed again and increase the number of offspring produced in one season. Little penguins, also known as fairy penguins, are found both in the southern parts of Australia and in New Zealand where they represent major ecotourism attractions. They nest on offshore islands and on the mainland in places like the bottom of cliffs where predator access is restricted. Their burrows are dug in sand or soil but they can also nest under vegetation in caves and in the crevices of rock falls.

As their population has declined in some parts of their range, it has become more and more urgent to understand their ecology. They indeed suffer predation from rats, foxes and cats in addition to loss of habitat through human development and pollution via plastic and oil spills. These birds have the smallest foraging range of all seabirds and are moreover shallow pursuit divers because of their small size - about 15.75 inches. Recently, exciting research involving deploying dive behavior recorders and GPS trackers have shown that they are able to adapt to and benefit from anthropogenic alterations, show differences in parental effort and individual quality, as well as form at-sea associations in order to increase their hunting success. They also seem to display individual specializations in diving behavior and

There are some examples of wild animals adapting to urban life. I remember observing sea lions at pier 39 in San Francisco trying to understand why they would choose such a location and how they could cope with human disturbance. The same question popped into my head as I contemplated tourists photographing and observing little penguins on the Saint Kilda breakwater wall in Melbourne. Amazingly, hundreds of breeding pairs have been able to successfully establish themselves in between the rocks of the breakwater. They’re able to exploit food resources within Port Phillip bay and are thought to use the three-dimensional structure of human-dug shipping channels to trap their prey. A study has certainly reported differences between the little penguins’ diving habits in natural environments compared to the ones they exhibit in the bay, which involve more time spent diving close to the sea floor. Part of the birds’ success also lies in the fact that there is a secure fence preventing predators from accessing the colony. They are however, exposed to other associated threats such as a public desire to further modify their foraging environment by deepening the shipping channels, which will increase water turbidity and therefore influence both the penguins’ and their prey’s behaviour. Unfortunately, this could jeopardize the little penguins’ survival in this highly modified environment. Saint Kilda is not an exception though and little penguins use other urban locations and modified environments such as former quarries and harbors in Oamaru and Sydney.

Ongoing studies are, in fact, trying to understand whether or not being a generalist or a specialist is a better strategy for them to efficiently forage, and ultimately increase their reproductive success. Studying the penguins’ diet through blood samples is looking at evidence of prey preferences at different times during the breeding season that will also help researchers determine whether or not the birds exhibit consistent strategies. This is a fairly new area of interest in seabird research in general, which will assist in understanding how those animals can cope with climate change and habitat modifications.

Mariner Amphibious DRONE

rones are a hot topic. While the technology is still in its infancy, with the FTC frantically trying to keep up, there’s still some fun to be had. And now boaters can get in on all the action and show off their voyages with the world’s first amphibious UAV Quad-copter (Drone) – the Mariner. The Mariner is made in China by Moogu Technology and has features that are sure to make a yachtie smile: high quality rugged, waterproof construction combined with a powerful NazaM-Lite fight controller with GPS and autopilot hover, carbon fiber props, four high-intensity LEDs to insure that the Mariner has high visibility in all environments even at night.
