from the editor A couple of months ago I attended a US Sailing course at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club to refresh and improve my sailing skills. I was surprised by how much I learned, and by how much I still need to practice in order to master singlehandling an engineless sailboat. My goal is to be able to charter a yacht in the Caribbean and invite my whole family to go cruising together. Let’s see how long it takes me to achieve it - seamanship takes time and perseverance...:)

I’m not really water based, rather more of a lifestyle coach. I am doing yoga and yoga therapy, massage (regular table and Thai/shiatsu on a mat) and am also practicing hypnotherapy. It is a fantastic coaching tool which can be done in person or via Skype/phone. Sometimes hypnotherapy has a bit of a negative connotation but really it is for people who want to perform better, to stop doing something (i.e. overeating, smoking, drinking, nail biting, etc), or to feel better (pain management, health issues or emotional pain, lack of motivation) Not sure if that is too fringe for your fancy magazine which by the way looks lovely….you’ve done a great job. Safety Tips from First Alert
T
he weather is warming and it’s time to get on the water! To make sure boating stays fun this summer, it’s important to make safety a priority. In honor of National Safe Boating Week, May 21-27, here are some safety tips from First Alert. Take a Course – Operator inattention and inexperience are two top contributing factors to incidents. Boating education courses teach the rules for safe operation and navigation of recreational boats, and can help captains keep their passengers safe. Make a Pre-departure Checklist – Be prepared for any possibility on the water! A few items that should be on your safety checklist include a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, flashlight and rope. For a portable, easy-to-use option, First Alert’s Marine Fire Extinguisher is rechargeable and U.S. Coast Guard-approved. Wear It – In fatal boating accidents, 78% of the victims drown, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Of these, 84% are not wearing a life jacket. Properly fitted life jackets should be worn at all times by everyone on board. Comfortable Coast Guard-approved life jackets are widely available. Don’t Drink – Boating under the influence of alcohol is just as deadly as drinking and driving. Due to sun exposure and heat, people are likely to become impaired more quickly when on the water. So play it safe and avoid alcohol when boating. Beware of CO – Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless and poisonous gas that is emitted by all internal combustion engines, such as boat engines. The symptoms of CO poisoning are similar to seasickness, but CO can kill in a matter of minutes. The only way to detect CO is with an alarm. Consider First Alert’s Travel CO Alarm, a portable device for travel and recreation.

urrounded by the Manhattan skyline, New Jersey and the Statue of Liberty—the Hudson River, one of the most famous waterways in the world, provided a great place for the America’s Cup World Series, an event that helped promote and determine points for the 35th America’s Cup to be held in June 2017 in Bermuda. For the very first time since 1920, New York City made history by hosting the America’s Cup World Series. The Louis Vuitton Cup Race Village was set up at North Cove Marina in Manhattan’s Financial District. The official Event Village
was located at Brookfield Place Waterfront Plaza, located across the street from the One World Trade Plaza and 9/11 Memorial on the banks of the Hudson River. The location provided an excellent vantage point for watching the race and allowed spectators to take part in some of the pre- and post-sailing entertainment made available to the public. Over 100,000 spectators turned out both days of the event to watch this new era of foiling catamarans that are capable of speeds of 48 knots, or about 55 mph. Racing in the AC45F Class, these one-

Racing these incredible foiling multihulls were Skippers Nathan Outteridge from Artemis Racing, Sir Ben Ainslie from team Land Rover BAR, Glenn Ashby from Emirates Team New Zealand, Frank Cammas from Groupama Team France, Dean Barker from the newly formed SoftBank Team Japan and Jimmy Spithill from Oracle Team USA. Light winds canceled two scheduled races on Day 1, but the second day of racing offered a better scenario. In an amazing winner-takeall final race, New Zealand’s Team Emirates was able to unhook itself from a starting buoy and win the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Word’s Series New York with a score of 52 points. Oracle Team USA, the reigning America’s Cup champion, placed second in the race and second for the series. Third Place went to Team France, winner of Race 2. SoftBank Team Japan fourth, Land Rover BAR fifth and Artemis Racing sixth.

or three days straight, strong winds provided lots of power to the 243 boats that filled Charleston’s harbor with their colorful sails for this year’s Sperry Charleston Race Week. Skippers and crews, with all skill levels, hailed from 27 nations for the event’s 21st year of world famous sailing. Olympic and America’s Cup crews to the newest jib-and-main racer sailed boats ranging from 19 to 84 feet in the seven mixed/handicap fleets and 11 one-design racing classes. The highlight of the race was when 13-year old Gannon Troutman led the 67-boat J/70 fleet all week until helmsman Julián Fernández Neckelmann (Mexico City), the reigning J/70 World Champion, edged out on the last day by one point, tying them at 21 points after nine races. As a result of Fernández’s number of first place
finishes, Troutman lost the tiebreaker. Neckelman not only won their class, but took home the Charleston Race Week Trophy for their best overall performance in the one-design class. In the Melges 24 Class, Bruce Ayres’ Monsoon battled it out with Travis Weisleder. According to Moonsoon trimmer, George Peet, they were tied going into the final race until about two minutes up the course, when they were able to dig back and then hold Travis’ team out just enough to get away cleanly resulting in Ayres’ winning. Tiebreakers decided two other titles when New Jersey’s Russ Lucas’ Shimmer came from behind to catch Daniel Thielman’s Kuai and won the Melges 20 National Championship. The J/24 fleet was just as close—Giggity’s skipper, Scott McCormick, held off a late charge for the second straight year from Aidan Glacken’s Mental Floss to take the back-to-back class win on equal scores. ailing catamarans paved the way for the overall acceptance of multihulls as boaters first experienced the benefits of these models via charter. The large open spaces, exceptional comfort, good stability and significant fuel efficiency made sense. Soon, private owners were looking to purchase power cats as well. As demand for these platforms grew, builders like Lagoon pounced on the opportunity to fill the need. In the process, they focused on developing larger boats with greater luxury. The latest high-end power cat to launch is the new Lagoon 630, an enormous vessel that is turning heads. Naval architects Van Peteghem and Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) joined forces to create the palatial Lagoon 620 sailing cat of which over 50 hulls have been built. They then leveraged that design, and with numerous tweaks, transformed it into a power cat that is getting a lot of attention. Modifications had to be made. You can’t just take the mast out of a sailing cat and call it done. The aft 20 percent of the underbody was optimized to allow higher speeds and manage the greater forces experienced by a powerboat. Now, two feet longer with reinforced compartments to hold larger engines, this cat cruises at 9-10 knots and there are very few places on Earth you can’t take her. Impeccable Interior There are so many options on the Lagoon 630 that makes it more of a semi-custom, rather than a production, boat. One example is the interior, which has a choice of five different layouts offering four to six cabins and an equal amount of ensuite heads. Owners with specific needs have many choices including deciding on the location of the galley – up in the saloon or down in the port hull. The “galley up” version has the sink and stove outboard and a long

This island allows multiple cooks to work simultaneously, provides a place for extra stowage and refrigeration drawers, and helps to serve as a bracing point for the chef to work even when it’s bumpy on passage. The lateral “galley down” configuration takes up the aft end of the port hull and has its own exit to the deck. If this vessel is professionally managed, the crew can prepare meals out of sight and serve guests inside or on deck with minimal intrusion. In this layout, the entire inside main deck becomes the saloon with large sofas facing inboard and low tables on both sides. At a time when cruising cats are doing away with anything but a hint of a navigation desk, the Lagoon 630 dedicates a fair amount of space to the captain’s business. A forward-facing steering station has a good view of what is ahead and plenty of room for engine controls and electronics like a Simrad multifunction display (MFD). (This is the third steering station aboard - the other two are on the flybridge). There is no wheel inside so you steer with a joystick in air-conditioned comfort. The Lagoon 630 may be ordered with up to six cabins, three in each

A large bed lies athwartships, half-way back from the bow where motion is minimized. Aft is an enormous bath with twin sinks, a head inboard and a stand-up, clear glass-wall shower opposite. This cabin may be accessed from the saloon or directly from the aft deck. Other staterooms include three to four doubles and the option of one over/under cabin on the port side, which will be perfect for crew or kids. Nauta Design is responsible for the contemporary but comfortable interior. Heavy emphasis is placed on elegance. Gone are the allwhite composite surfaces cats have been known for. A more upscale feel has been created with Alpi wood in oak or teak, paired with dark veneer flooring and acres of fabric overlays on the walls. Light pours in via the many hatches and the vertical saloon windows that cover up with electric blinds for privacy. Headroom is exceptional at 6’ 9”. The Great Outdoors Although the saloon may be spec’d with two side-by-side dining tables, this model is really designed to have everyone dine in the cockpit where a large table to starboard seats eight. There is a lounge just outboard of the dining settee and a wet bar may be installed in the long counter to port.

Nothing is difficult to negotiate on this cat. It’s easy to board the aft hulls from a dinghy or dock and ascend four steps to the main deck. From here, you can move forward on one level all the way to the sunpads on the foredeck. There are handholds on the cabintop and a high stainless steel railing around the perimeter of the deck so moving around feels safe. The entire transom is one long settee with two integrated liferaft storage cubbies below and engine access via deck hatches on either side. With the engines nearly 30 feet apart, it’s easy to maneuver this big boat in close quarters but Lagoon did spec a bow thruster in the starboard hull for even better control. The standard engines are 260 HP Volvo Penta D4 diesels (upgradeable to 300 HP) with V-drives and four-bladed fixed props. At six knots, the maximum range with the standard engines is just over 2,900 nautical miles. A faster cruise of 9 knots and an optional fuel tank that holds nearly 500 additional gallons, make this cat an ocean-crosser. Sky High Living There is a full staircase (not a ladder) from the cockpit to the flybridge. The steps are easy on the knees and there are plenty of handholds along the way. flybridge but rather gives it a nice flow between leisure and working areas. An L-shaped settee to starboard allows guests to be separate from the crew working at the twin steering stations. The helm pods, each with instruments and an MFD, resemble command centers on a superyacht adding to the overall luxe feel of the boat. A hardtop with an optional retractable sunroof protects the flybridge from the elements. For those wishing to work on their tan on the forward sunpad, a canvas shade slides back so that lounging on the upper deck feels like riding in a convertible. Getting Noticed The Lagoon 630 is a big cat. The aft deck alone is nearly 250 square feet and the interior is nearly 900 square feet. The yacht can easily accommodate eight to twelve people for extended cruising. But it’s not just her size that makes her noteworthy in an anchorage. This cat is clearly powerful and long-legged, with a nod to superyacht styling and elegance that will get her noticed wherever she prowls.

s a fourth generation Floridian in my seventh decade of living, I am interested in preserving the health of the natural environment for my children and grandchildren. This includes the coastal estuaries that link marine and freshwater environments. Living in harmony with the natural environment is a challenge in Florida, which has undergone more growth in human population and infrastructure than most other regions of the United States. For several decades this growth has impacted indigenous plant and animal life through habitat loss or alteration, decreased water quality, increases in airborne pollutants and introduction of invasive species. In the case of Florida manatees, an endangered species, habitat alteration has included harmful algal blooms such as red tide that have resulted in hundreds of sick and dead manatees. These blooms may be exacerbated by groundwater runoffs high in nitrates and phosphorus that are often caused by human activities including septic tank leakage and the use of manufactured fertilizers. lagoons, inlets, lakes and coastal islands. Manatees are found in each of these habitats because they feed on a wide variety of aquatic vegetation. The number of registered boats in Florida has increased significantly along with the expanding human population, and is directly correlated with increasing manatee mortality from strikes by boats. During 2008-2012, an average of 88 manatees per year died as a result of boat strikes. Dead manatees undergo postmortem necropsy at the Marine Mammal Pathobiology Laboratory in St. Petersburg, Florida to determine cause of death and to collect other biological data important for understanding population dynamics. Can manatees detect and avoid boats? Hearing studies have been done on wild and captive manatees. In controlled experiments, they have been observed to detect and avoid single boats traveling at a variety of speeds, as long as they have adequate time to respond. However, the presence of many

Just imagine yourself underwater with five or ten boats moving around nearby! Reduced speed zones have been implemented at designated locations in 18 Florida counties, focused on areas where manatees are known to be abundant. They include portions of over 20 major rivers, but constitute only a very small fraction of the total amount of navigable waterways used by manatees in Florida. Depending upon the specific location, restrictions include no entry, idle speed, slow speed, and 25, 30 or 35 mph limits. Some restrictions apply year-round, others during specific months. The premise of establishing slow boat speed zones for manatee protection is that vessels moving at slower speeds allow both the vessel operator and the manatee more time to respond to avoid a collision. In the event that a collision occurs, less severe injuries are caused if a vessel is moving at a slower speed. Even moderate reductions in the speed at which an

impact occurs can dramatically lessen the potential for injuries or death since the resultant force of impact is reduced. How do boaters behave in slow speed zones? Several studies have found that only about 60% of boaters comply with posted slow speeds. Not surprisingly, the presence of law enforcement results in greater compliance. However, the number of marine patrol officers is very low compared to what would be needed to have a widespread effect on boater compliance. For now, low boater compliance and an increasing number of boats are two factors that contribute to sustained high numbers of manatees killed by boat strikes. Technological solutions have been proposed, including warning lights and sound beacons on boats to notify boaters of manatees in an area. However, in my opinion, if we are to solve the problem of manatees being hit by

Spotting Manatees While traversing waterways known to have manatees it is important to follow speed limits and lookout for these majestic creatures. Have a dedicated spotter on board and look for large shadows and circular wave patterns left on the surface of the water by the manatee’s tail. Polarized sunglasses will help. One of the pleasures of being in Florida is seeing manatees in their natural habitat, either from your boat, by kayak tour or on a snorkeling trip in the Crystal River area. The Manatee Eco-Tourism Association of Citrus County is composed of responsible tour companies and strives to ensure that all human/manatee interaction is conducted in a safe, non-stressful and considerate manner. We can change the way other people behave on the water by setting a good example through our own behavior. So enjoy boating in Florida and keep an eye out for manatees and slow speed zones!

s soon as you set foot on the steep streets of this ancient town, you can’t help but feel lost in time. The slow and quiet pace of its gracious people is a warm welcome to the serene surroundings of what is known to be one of the oldest capitals in Europe. Although a vibrant city, Lisbon hardly feels like a hectic metropolis. Its clean air and its striking architecture makes it seem more like a small town that has deliberately stopped in time to offer you a glimpse of its rich past. The porcelain tiled building façades, intricate cobblestone streets, old lamp posts and the ever so charming streetcars evoke a sense of historical glamour rarely seen these days. The capital of a country, whose past was at the forefront of naval exploration, Lisbon lies tucked away in western Europe like a rare relic that only the very fortunate get to enjoy. A maze of narrow streets set on seven hills that border the majestic Tagus river as it merges with the Atlantic ocean. I had only one day to explore this charming, and dare I say rather unpredictable destination. One minute, I was walking in the heart of downtown up a narrow street and the next, I had reached the top of a downward path surrounded by a landscape filled with old rooftops that led to an amazing river view. At times, the combination of Lisbon’s natural beauty and

Al solo tener un día para disfrutarla, no dudé en empezar a recorrerla enseguida pero me di cuenta que el sosegado y sigiloso ritmo de los lisboetas me transmitía una gran serenidad, lo que me obligó de cierta manera, a tomar con calma mi paseo por esta hermosa ciudad. No cabe duda de que Lisboa es una capital vibrante, sin ser una agitada metrópoli. Su aire limpio y su hermosa arquitectura le dan un aspecto más bien de una ciudad pequeña que se ha detenido en el tiempo para ofrecer a sus visitantes lo que queda de su próspero pasado. Sus fachadas de porcelana, sus callejuelas empedradas, sus antiguas farolas así como sus viejos tranvias transmiten un glamour histórico muy singular. La capital de un país que cuenta con una historia naval importante, Lisboa yace escondida en un extremo de Europa como una reliquia que solo los muy afortunados llegan a contemplar. Un recóndito laberinto de calles estrechas que se extienden sobre siete colinas y dan a la desembocadura del majestuoso rio Tajo. Un minuto te puedes ver caminando entre las multitudes de su centro y en otro, subiendo una rua de hermosos adoquines que culmina sobre la cima de una de sus muchas colinas para brindarte una envidiable vista del

its old world charm made for a somewhat dreamlike experience. Like a step back into its ancient past. Celts, Phoenetians, Romans, Visigoths, Moors, have all left their trace for wherever you look you see remnants of these cultures. A great example of Moorish heritage is the castle of Saint George which sits at the top of a hill overlooking the city next to its enigmatic Alfama neighborhood, a true labyrinth of winding streets and old dwellings with balconies that peek over the river. This ever so charming area is always bustling with busy restaurants and bars where Fado, sad ballads about love and abandonment, accompanied by the distinct picking sound of the Portuguese guitar, are played until the wee hours. Back in1755, a magnitude 8 earthquake could not destroy the Castle or Alfama, but did devastate the rest of the city killing over 100,000 people. Soon after, it was rebuilt giving birth to the Pombaline architectural style named after the Marques de Pombal, prime minister at the time. A combination of roccoco and neo-classic structures line the lovely lush boulevard known as Avenida da Liberdade, the main artery that runs from the Praça do Marques de Pombal to O Chiado, the heart of downtown. Colorful tiled buildings that spring from its sides, reminders of the resilient and laborious character of the Portuguese people. Intricate

designs that depict the delicate taste of a culture that revels in the details, the determination to enhance beauty wherever it may be found. That same determination is reflected in their cuisine. Elaborate meals that are presented in a simple fashion, often served in handmade pottery that add a touch of rustic elegance to the many fabulous meat, fish and seafood dishes available, not to mention their delicate desserts. As I walked down rua São José, I stumbled upon a little restaurant called Zé Varunca, specializing in food from the Alentejo region, south of Lisbon. This quaint eatery was exactly what I was looking for so I chose the local favorite: black pork, the most tender and rich flavored cut of meat from the acorn fed Iberian pig. It was served with a simple garnish of homemade french fries and creamed spinach, enough to make it one of the most memorable meals I’ve ever had. This deliciously moist cut of meat was well paired with a nice bottle of Alvarinho, a full bodied white wine from the northern region of Portugal. To finish, I ordered a bica - a nice cup of expresso- served on a beautifully handpainted ceramic tray that I wish I could’ve sneaked into my handbag to bring home as a souvenir. I wouldn’t dare!

Sin olvidar sus delicados postres. No muy lejos de la Avenida da Liberdade, sobre la calle de São José, me tropecé con un pequeño restaurante llamado Zé Varunca cuyas especialidades provienen del Alentejo, una provincia al sur de Lisboa. Allí me recomendaron el plato favorito: secreto de cerdo, la parte más tierna del cerdo ibérico al que solo se alimenta con bellotas. Esta delicia nos fue servida con una guarnición de crema de espinacas y patatas fritas acompañado de una copa de Alvarinho, un vino blanco de matices afrutados. As much as I’d like to have had another cup of coffee and some dessert, little room was left for either. A nice walk after a meal was all I needed or so I thought. With a pastry shop almost in every corner, tempting me to stop, it was hard to resist another bica, a cultural remnant of colonial times in Brazil. And of course, how could I not get a taste of the local pastry par excellence: the pastel de nata, a custard filled phyllo cup sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar. The original ones come from the nearby district of Belém where they have been made with a secret recipe since 1837. Time for a good nap. But really, do I want to sleep and miss out on more of this lovely town? I could sit at an “esplanada” (outdoor cafe) and watch people walk by all afternoon if I’d like. I really could! In Portugal, you’re rarely rushed to leave a table no matter where you are, even if you sit for hours on one drink, the check will only come when asked for. One of the great cafes in Lisbon is A Brasileira, located in Bairro Alto. It first opened in 1905 with the sole purpose of selling ground coffee imported from Brazil. Curiously, the owner offered a free cup of brew for every kilo of ground coffee purchased. Their bica became so popular that a few years later it was turned into a cafe, becoming a true landmark in Lisbon. Nowadays, they also serve port wine which I opted to try while listening to some pretty good street musicians who played bossa nova as I watched shoppers crowd bustling rua Garret. Finally, as I got up, I couldn’t help but notice a lovely bookstore across the street: Livraria Bertrand, an old shop that has been selling books since the XVIII century (it was actually moved and rebuilt after the earthquake), offering a great selection of books in English. Soon after, I went for a walk down O Chiado, where I heard music playing, right by the Elevador de Santa Justa, an elevator built in 1882 to create access from the

a mano que estuve a punto de robarme para traérmela como recuerdo. ¡No me atreví!. Al continuar con mi paseo por esta fascinante ciudad, me seguí tropezando con una y otra pastelería que me tentaban a tomarme otra bica. Al final no pude resistir y me rendí, pero esta vez tuve que acompañarlo con uno de los famosos pasteis de nata - dulces hecho con hojaldre y crema que originalmente provienen de Belém donde se llevan elaborando con una receta secreta desde 1837. Después de tanto capricho, me senté en la terraza de A Brasileira en Bairro Alto, un curioso local que abrió en 1905 con el único propósito de vender café en grano importado del Brasil. Su dueño le ofrecía una tacita gratis a sus clientes por cada kilo de café que comprasen. Su bica se volvió tan popular que poco después convirtieron la tienda en una café. También sirven vino de oporto que me atreví a saborear mientras escuchaba a unos músicos callejeros tocar bossa nova y observaba como se llenaba la rua Garrett de gente que entraba y salía de sus tiendas. Poco después me dispuse a pasear por O Chiado donde se oía más música al lado del Elevador de Santa Justa, un ascensor contruído en 1882 para crear acceso entre la parte baja y la alta de la ciudad. La sintonía provenía de un coche antiguo donde un viejito vendía discos compactos de Fado. Mientras ojeaba su selección me aconsejó, con una sonrisa entre dientes, “es mejor que compre uno instrumental, las letras son demasiado tristes”. Al caer la noche, no me fue difícil encontrar donde cenar bien. Me topé con O Cantinho do Avillez, uno de los restaurantes más famosos de Lisboa, cuyo dueño es un reconocido chef llamado José Avillez. Este pequeño local se encuentra en la Rua Duques de Bragança número 7 y cuenta con un ambiente ecléctico de granja moderna donde ofrecen platos tradicionales con un toque vanguardista, servidos de manera tal vez

lower part of town to the upper side. The lovely guitar playing came from a street cart where an old man sold Fado CDS. As I looked through the selection, he highly recommended I buy an instrumental version. “You’re better off just listening to the guitar, the lyrics are too sad”, he said with a grin. Dinner was not hard to figure out, just hard to decide where. I was fortunate enough to try one of the most renowned restaurants in town, O Cantinho do Avillez, run by prominent chef and TV personality José Avillez, a young innovator of the best in Portuguese cuisine. Located on Rua Duques de Bragança 7, this place has an eclectic atmosphere of rustic farmhouse tables and modern decor. Here I was happy to find the most traditional fare with a twist, old school favorites that were presented in a somewhat lighter fashion without ever compromising texture or flavor such as the Lascas de bacalhau, a generous portion of flaked cod lightly dressed with homemade toasted breadcrumbs, low temperature soft boiled egg and “explosive olives” (submitted to a spherification process to create a gelatinous film that makes them burst into flavor as you bite into them). Another exquisite codfish dish which is an art the Portuguese have mastered like no other. I still had a couple of hours to spare in Lisbon so I walked down rua Dom Pedro V where I came across a place that looked like a run- down Chinese restaurant. It turned out to be another step back in time: an early XX century bar called O Pavilhäo Chinês: dim lighting and red velvet booths surrounded by floor to ceiling glass shelves holding quirky collectibles of all sorts, from military hats to china dolls, a true concoction of early twentieth century kitsch that offered a drink menu with over 100 different cocktails, as well as a great assortment of teas. Apparently, it’s Tony Blair’s favorite bar in Lisbon. Every time he visits, he stops in. After comfortably sinking into one of the comfy booths and listening to some eighties music, I was quickly reminded by my phone it was time to head back to the airport. As I walked down the dark and quiet street looking for a cab, I couldn’t help but notice the full moon shining over the city from the Jardim de São Pedro de Alcántara, a small park that overlooks the castle offering me one last memorable glimpse of this gorgeous city and its charming rooftops.

Su fama también se debe a su menú de unos 100 cócteles diferentes, así como una gran variedad de tés. Hay quienes dicen que es el bar favorito de Tony Blair y que cada vez que viene a Lisboa, lo frecuenta. Después de descansar un buen rato en uno de sus amplios y cómodos sillones, sonó mi teléfono para recordarme que tenía que volver al aeropuerto. Bajando la calle me detuve en el Jardim de São Pedro para admirar por última vez la vista del castillo iluminado con la ciudad a sus pies.

he beauty of this waterfront desert lies in its color palette – clear blue skies reflect off turquoise waters, red clay hills are punctuated by tall green saguaro cactus and sunsets are ablaze with reds and oranges so deep, they seem to be right out of a Mexican street painting. Sometimes it is so clear, a jet liner contrail is visible overhead forever. Adding to the color scheme are the white decks of the hundreds of yachts that visit The Sea of Cortez each year, many of which make their temporary home at Marina Costa Baja, a premier yachting facility in La Paz. It’s a combination of resort, marina and vacation real estate for wealthy Mexicans and expats.

Espiritu Santo and Partida lie just across the San Lorenzo channel about 20 miles north of La Paz. These two islands, separated literally by a spit of sand that is sometimes submerged, offer a dozen dramatic coves or caletas on the west, or lee, side.
There are two hotel properties here for those arriving by boat but wanting a break from onboard living: Costa Baja Resort & Spa and Hyatt Place. The resort’s décor is all desert chic with nice common areas, exceptional service and all-glass in-room showers (come with a close friend that you don’t mind showering in front of). here as if they were pulled down from the U.S. and Canada on an annual southbound conveyor belt. The weather is mostly cooperative, but La Paz is truly a desert so don’t expect the tropics,. It can get cold in January and sweltering in August but May, June, October and November are sublime. A scenic malecón, or strand, runs along the edge of the harbor with cafes, nightclubs, dive shops, art galleries, souvenir emporiums and museums. The city offers dozens of fantastic restaurants from touristy to barebones and if you want to talk cruising and boats, you’re bound to find a few liveaboards each night at El Rancho Viejo, a fantastic taquería just a few blocks up from Marina de la Paz, seemingly known as yachtie central. Here, even if the sea tales don’t get you, the margaritas will. The Islands of the Sea Espiritu Santo and Partida lie just across the San Lorenzo channel about 20 miles north of La Paz. If you venture into town, there are some excellent choices as well: Las Tres Vírgenes – touted as the best in town, even by the locals. The Dock Café – international cuisine with cocktails in the colors of the rainbow. Bismark Cito – right on the malecón with a huge Mexican food menu and even larger fishbowl margaritas. El Rancho Viejo – rustic and affordable, the clientele is a mix of locals and yachties. Imaginative tacos and smaller, more traditional, margaritas that pack a punch. In La Paz, hotels are affordable, the food is excellent, the town is laid back and friendly and The Sea is unsurpassed in its natural beauty. La Paz is a cultural mélange where upscale experiences mix seamlessly with casual fun. And of course, there are the colors. Everything about La Paz and its environs is vivid. and more than 500 species of fish swim in these waters along with 12 species of whales. The waters around Espiritu Santo are crystal clear with dramatic cliff vistas in every direction. At the northern tip is Los Islotes, home to a sea lion rookery. Jumping in with fins and snorkel, you may soon find yourself getting dive-bombed by curious sea lions peering into your mask to then dash off faster than you can turn around. Caleta Balandra on the peninsula, is home to the famous Balandra Rock, a mushroom-shaped formation that had been worn away by water in the middle, giving it sort of a leg to stand on, and thereby making it a popular tourist attraction. When a crazed tourist toppled it a few years ago, La Paz workers cemented it back together. It’s one of the most photographed rocks in the world. Balandra beach is a local’s hangout and families come here on weekends to swim and kayak or walk along two protected white sand coves. There’s little here except a concession truck but you can drive another fifteen minutes along a two-lane road to Tecolote that offers a

t’s a beautiful Saturday afternoon and you decide to set out for a boat ride with the kids. Whether you’ll be fishing, water skiing or just cruising, you need to keep in mind the possibility of dehydration that can come from being out in the ocean. Making sure you have plenty of water aboard is a must. Dehydration happens to be one of the biggest problems people encounter when out sailing, especially with children. Strong heat in the middle of the ocean can cause serious dehydration and according to Miami pediatrician Dr. Philip Floyd, children are more vulnerable due to their smaller body size.

The best way to stay hydrated is to drink water every 15 to 20 minutes while staying away from sodas and salty or sweet snacks. “If your child becomes dehydrated, always attempt to rehydrate slowly but steadily –small, frequent sips– using an oral rehydration fluid like Pedialyte. Water and sports drinks are reasonable second and third choices,” explains Dr. Floyd. Dr. Floyd strongly recommends that parents be proactive and try to hydrate before, during, and after exercise and sun/heat exposure. “It’s best to protect your children from the sun – hats, shade, and rest,” he adds. According to Dr. Floyd, children on boats should follow the same rules of dehydration prevention for adults and therefore should also avoid prolonged sun exposure. “Remember: just because your children feel cool does not mean they are well hydrated. Being on a boat often leads to slow but steady dehydration. You just don’t realize how large the fluid loss is when you are having fun in the water and sun!” he concludes.

Peach and Tomato Caprese Salad Prep time: 15 mins This Peach and Tomato Caprese Salad takes a summer time twist on the traditional Caprese. We add in ripe summer stone fruit like peaches for a sweet complement to tangy garden tomatoes. This salad makes a great addition to grilled entrees of all kinds. Make the best use of the summer fruit while it’s around!
Ingredients • 3 ripe peaches (you can also use nectarines) • 3 large ripe tomatoes (feel free to use an heirloom variety) • 1 lb fresh mozzarella • 3 oz fresh baby arugula • 1 pint blackberries • 2 tbsp Colavita Extra Virgin Olive Oil • 1/2 tbsp Colavita Balsamic Glace • 1/2 tsp salt • About 10-12 small basil leaves (rip larger leaves in half or thirds) Optional: shavings of Parmesan cheese
Instructions 1. Cut the peaches or nectarines into segments, discarding the pit. 2. Slice the mozzarella into 1/4” rounds. 3. Place a circle of tomato slices onto a large serving platter. Season with 1/4 tsp sea salt. Layer slices of mozzarella cheese on top of the tomatoes. Place the peach or nectarine segments on top of the cheese. 4. Mound the arugula in the middle of the circle of fruit. Add the blackberries to the arugula. Sprinkle the arugula and blackberries with the remaining salt. 5. Drizzle the entire platter with Colavita Olive Oil and drizzle with Balsamic Glace. 6. Scatter the basil leaves throughout. 7. Serve! Optional: Create shavings of Parmesan cheese with a potato peeler and distribute them on top of the arugula and blackberries.
