hirty-eight teams from four continents representing ten nations recently competed in The Melges 20 World Championship hosted by the New York Yacht Club, Newport, RI. Drew Freides’ Pacific Yankee with Morgan Reeser (tactician) and Charlie Smythe (crew member) captured their very first major international title in the Melges Class—017 Melges 20 World Champions. Vladimir Prosikhin’s Nika claimed second place, John Kilroy Jr.’s Samba Pa Ti third, Alessandro Rombelli’s Stig fourth and Jim Wilson’s Oleander fifth. Justin Quigg’s Character 2.0 (CAN) and his teammates, Julian Plante and Nick Cleary, won the 2017 Corinthian World Champion title. Cesar Gomes Neto’s Portobella (BRA) came in second followed by Johannes Lind-Widestram’s Intermezzo (ITA) winning third.

en historic 12 Metres ranging from 65 to 75 feet sailed the North American Championship off Newport, RI. The event along with the Metrefest Newport, Newport Trophy and Edgartown Race will count toward points for the Road To The Worlds Waypoint Series which will lead to the 2019 12 Metre Worlds scheduled to be held in Newport, RI. Jack LeFort (Jamestown, RI) and his Challenge XII teammates placed first in the Modern Division beating Defender by one point in overall scoring. Defender’s score line of 1-2-5 reflected a man overboard in the third race who was picked up by a safety boat automatically giving the boat points equal to last place plus one. Gunther Buerman (Highland Beach, FL/Newport RI) and his New Zealand team won their fifth North American title in a row beating out Laura in the Grand Prix Division. Weatherly, charted
by Jay Schachne (Barrington, RI), won the Traditional Division on a tiebreaker with American Eagle. At the Awards Ceremony held at the Ida Lewis Yacht Club, Newport, RI (hosts of the 2017 North American Championship) the Gubelmann Trophy was awarded to the three division winners. The Ted Hood Trophy was awarded to the teams in each division with the highest points overall for the season. Recipients were Columbia, Courageous and New Zealand. James (Jamie) Hilton (Tiverton, RI) was awarded the Ted Turner Trophy for his outstanding contribution to the 12 metre Class on and off the water. Event Chair, Peter Gerard, who is also Vice President of the Americas Fleet and leads the Road To The Worlds, expects that over 25 boats - more than half coming from outside North America- will compete in the 2019 12 Metre World Championship. Taiwan International Boat Show By LISA BESALEL
M
ark your calendars, the third biennial Taiwan International Boat Show will be held from March 15-18, 2018, continuing to raise the profile of the Taiwan yacht industry and developing the yacht market for local customers. Expanding significantly year over year, this year’s show will host many manufacturers including Taiwanese shipyards Ocean Alexander, Kha Shing, Dyna Yachts, and Johnson Yachts, as well as agents for overseas yachts such as Taiwan Princess Yachts, Amal Yachting, and others. Taiwan has a substantial marine parts and equipment industry which feeds the supply chain both within Taiwan and overseas. Domestic participants include Atech Composites, Hung Shen Propeller, ZF Faster Propulsion System, and Solas Science and Engineering. Overseas exhibitors include Capital Machinery, Marineer Equipment, Himan Tech Diesel and engine manufacturers Caterpillar, MAN and Volvo Penta, together with navigation equipment makers Garmin and Raymarine. In order to continue to develop leisure boating domestically, the 2018 Taiwan International Boat Show will feature more collections of entry-level small yachts and fishing boats to meet the popular trend for recreational fishing, and further promote the yachting lifestyle. There will be a series of marine education activities, including yacht sailing activities and experience-sharing by experts, a rare opportunity for the growing number of interested Taiwanese to learn and experience the yachting life. The show is being sponsored by the Bureau of Foreign Trade, MOEA and the Kaohsiung City Government, supported by the Taiwan Yacht Industry Association, and organized by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA).

As an island, Taiwan has a significant coastline, over 1,700 kilometers, yet the Taiwanese have traditionally been educated to fear the water and leisure boating has only been possible since 2012 when the government opened territorial waters for recreational boating. Prior to that, due to security concerns caused by the proximity to mainland China, non fishing vessels were confined to harbors, estuaries and inland waters. Since then the Taiwanese government has encouraged growth of the domestic boating market in a number of ways, from the ground up, teaching elementary school kids about water activity and safety, abolishing the certification requirement and a luxury tax on leisure boats, and supporting the Taiwan International Boat Show. It seems to be working. From its humble beginnings in the 1960s with most yards opening in the 80s, boatbuilding is now an industry worth hundreds of millions of dollars in exports. Statistics produced by Showboats International for 80ft yacht orders in 2016 show that Taiwan ranked first in Asia and fourth in the world in the manufacturing of yachts of this size. With the gradual development of the domestic yacht market, the demand for berths has increased with new docking facilities being constructed as well as Argo and Horizon yacht clubs. In addition to the continued use of Horizon City Marina, located outside the Kaohsiung Exhibition Centre, the 2018 show is adding the newly completed Kha Shing 22 Marina as an exhibit venue to add to the number of on-water berths for the show. Further developments linked to existing commercial ports are in the planning stages. Kaohsiung is Taiwan‘s second largest city and its largest port. An old fishing village, sunny with a natural barrier island, Kaohsiung has grown into an economic, industrial and commercial center as well as a tourist destination. It is fast becoming known for its diversity of parks, bike lanes, walking paths, cafés and night markets (my personal favorite!) You may have to stay an extra few days just to sample more of the delicious array of culinary offerings. An hour from the city boasts plenty to do and see. For a great snapshot of aboriginal life in Taiwan, head to the Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Culture park. The largest in Taiwan at over 82 hectares, it exhibits the lifestyle and cultural heritage of the nine main aboriginal tribes. An excellent way to learn about and experience the culture, it is also a great place to walk and picnic or just sit and relax. Don’t miss the suspension bridges with their awesome views. Although the vast majority of Taiwan’s population is Han Chinese (indigenous people make up only about 2% of the population) there are still many sub-divisions of this group living on the island. One of the biggest groups is the Hakka people. Hakka people represent about 20% of Taiwan’s population. For a dose of Hakka culture along with its cuisine, Liudui Hakka Cultural Park is worth a stop. It covers an area of about 30 hectares and is positioned to showcase Hakka culture in Taiwan and the lives of ordinary people. Further south in the Taiwan Strait is Dapeng Bay, the largest lagoon on the southwest coastline, and Taiwan’s largest inland bay, with beautiful landscapes of wetlands and seashores with a rich diversity of plants and animals as well as mangroves, fish aquaculture ponds and plenty of beaches. The Penbay resort area, a large lagoon with sea access via a lift bridge, has an existing marina built six years ago by the government and is currently being rebuilt after being damaged in a 2016 typhoon. It is also the site for a new marina to be constructed by the Orient Resort Penbay on the site of a World War II Japanese flying boat base. Originally designed by the Japanese army for use as a water airport and former kamakazi training facility which later turned into an American military base, most of the buildings in the Orient Resort Penbay are the old military historical buildings from 1938. Nearby attractions include the PenBay International Circuit, the first FIA G2 international level circuit in Taiwan, Penbay International Kart, one of the biggest go-kart racetracks in Asia and plenty of other water based recreational activities including kayaking in some of the countries only mangrove forests. Eerily uncrowded, Penbay is a blank slate and well worth the trip. So in March of 2018, Come for the boat show. Stay for Taiwan.

restige has built over 2,500 yachts from 35 to 75 feet over the past 20 years and with each revamp, the boats get a little more versatile, a little more luxurious and lot more practical for the way we boat today. For example, the 450, which was introduced in 2013, did so well that it was revamped and has morphed into its stretched successor, the Prestige 460. In the redesign the smart things were added to the existing hull that make it look and feel not just refreshed, but completely different, and boaters are taking notice. The deck windows were made larger for a light and breezy interior, the swim platform now submerges a full 32-inches below the surface for easy tender loading, and a transom galley was added for outdoor entertaining that truly stays outdoors. Inside, the layout has been reconfigured to create more room and a better traffic flow. Matte white cabinet faces complement grey oak wood surfaces and fabric panels grace the bulkheads to dampen sound and vibration. Overall, the new Garroni design aspires to look and feel more like her larger siblings, the 630 and the 680, rather than the previous 450 from which she evolved. On Deck In the re-design, the aft cockpit was made to seem larger with a new, forward-facing L-shaped settee in the starboard quarter. The transom

stowage space is also large and can be fitted with an optional crew cabin, complete with a bed, a head and its own climate control unit. A hatch on the cockpit sole provides access to the machinery space, which includes twin Volvo Penta engines and pods as well as a 13.5 kW Onan genset that is standard equipment. The space is limited and getting aft to the pods is a bit of a squeeze but most common service points are readily accessible. At the other end, the bow gained a lounge. No ordinary sunpad, this space now includes pop-up headboards that form two chaise lounges complete with cup holders. An awning lifts up from the deck to form a superyacht-style cabana making this the go-to place for sun worshippers or those who just want to nap or read in luxurious repose. The flybridge above, overlooks the bow and its getaway spot. The steps that lead up there are a bit steep but have good handholds along the way. A dinette and more sunpad acreage are to starboard. The outdoor helm is to port with a Raymarine display, engine throttles, a Volvo Penta screen and a joystick for the 370 HP IPS 5 diesels that are standard propulsion. Our test boat had the upgraded 435 HP IPS 6s that cruised comfortably at 24 knots and topped out at 32.5 knots and 3600 rpm. At cruise, you can expect a range of over 200 nautical miles, depending on sea and wind conditions. Accommodations Inside, the 460 changed up the layout. Gone is the signature second staircase that normally leads down to the secluded master stateroom

on most Prestige models. Its removal translated into a master that is now 30% larger. It has an ensuite head, a bed on the centerline and a lounge next to one of the large windows. Spending time here won’t feel at all like camping. The versatile VIP cabin in the bow has a centerline berth that can split into two separate beds. This will work for a couple, guests who aren’t that friendly, or kids. An optional washer/dryer can be installed under the steps that lead up to the salon so you can have warm towels and dry swimsuits any time. Upstairs, the galley is still aft and to starboard so it can easily serve both the interior portside dinette as well as anyone seated in the cockpit. The salon is two steps up, which raises it enough so that anyone seated gets a perfect, near-360-degree view through the windows that are now larger. Five to six guests may be seated at the U-shaped settee that wraps around the fold-out table to port and a matching straight settee will fit additional guests to starboard. Nice touches include a bottle locker and digital switching via a Scheiber panel. The helm to starboard is well laid out and compact so most controls are easy to reach. Twin 12-inch MFDs (Raymarine ES125s) sit on an angled dash behind the wheel. The pod and bowthruster joysticks are outboard on a panel below the opening window. Altogether, you can opt for three joysticks including at the inside helm, on the flybridge and in the aft cockpit. The latter one is the best place from which to dock, especially when backing into a slip. So How Does it Feel? The 460 may share a hull with her predecessor but that’s about

ur oceans are under siege from a variety of threats, including the excessive extraction of wild fish. Most fisheries in the world are fished beyond their limits — indiscriminant bycatch is decimating populations of marine wildlife, and bottom trawling and other destructive practices are destroying nursery and spawning habitat. This results in rapidly declining fish stocks and population crashes that ripple throughout the ocean food web. The good news is that oceans are resilient and can regain their former abundance, but for that to happen we must manage our fisheries responsibly. More and more countries are putting in place catch limits and habitat protections that are necessary to rebuild ocean resources. But for these efforts to be successful, the rules put in place to protect our most precious ocean resources must be vigorously enforced. Sailors understand what is at stake. And sailors, more than others, are in a position to help monitor the conduct of the global fishing fleet, to hold it accountable. Global Fishing Watch, built by a partnership between Oceana, the search engine giant Google and the technology nonprofit SkyTruth, is free, easy to use, global in scale, and open source, which means as more users access the technology and create additional applications over time, the tool will become even more powerful. Global Fishing Watch uses the Automatic Identification System, or AIS, which sailors recognize as a tracking system employed by over 200,000 vessels around the world for safety purposes. Large fishing vessels, including the ones that catch the most fish globally, are required to utilize AIS to prevent collisions at sea. Global Fishing Watch can access AIS data, which typically includes vessel identification information, and plug it into algorithms built to use vessel movement and location to identify apparent fishing activity. It then makes information on where fishing is occurring available to anyone with a computer and an internet connection. This is where sailors come in. Imagine being out on the water and you see a passing fishing vessel. Perhaps it seems suspicious or out of place, or you’re just curious about where it came from. If you have an internet connection and a computer, you can pull up Global Fishing Watch, and if that fishing vessel is using its AIS, you can trace the path of its previous activity (with a three-day delay) all the way back to 2012. Global Fishing Watch will indicate whether the ship has been fishing and you will be able to see where and when it fished, whether it fished in a protected area, and where and when it returned to port. Your “eyes on the ocean” might also identify odd behavior like a vessel meeting up with another ship at sea for a potential transshipment or a vessel that does not have its AIS activated. If you are sailing in or near a marine protected area and see a vessel fishing, you may be able to determine whether that ship was

When citizens show governments that laws are not being enforced, it will put pressure on those governments to act. Global Fishing Watch will help sailors, fishermen and everyday citizens hold governments accountable to enforce fishery laws. Global Fishing Watch is especially powerful in the hands of sailors around the world, who can match eyewitness accounts with recorded satellite data. Imagine if every sailor in the world could give evidence to authorities enabling them to determine which fishing vessels are following the law and those that are not. empowering citizens to be able to say, “I know where my seafood came from.” But it’s not just for sailors. By consistently using an AIS transponder, they might be able to fetch a higher price for their catch -- or get access to markets that in the future could be closed to any fishing vessel that doesn’t meet this basic transparency standard. In the meantime, it will put the bad actors on notice, essentially telling them: “We’ve got our eyes on you.”

e are snorkeling along the rugged coast of Isla Santiago, in the protected waters facing a tiny island aptly named Sombrero Chino or Chinese hat because it resembles a Chinese rice farmer’s hat. As I’m done watching colorful fish schools swim by, I remove my goggles and continue drifting with the current while observing how red crabs climb the black volcanic rocks along the coast. Suddenly, I see my first Galapagos penguin swimming nearby. Less than 2 feet long, they’re the only penguins in the world that live near the equator. This one is very cute and playful and I enjoy swimming close to him while, some 15 feet away, the rest of the group continues snorkeling. Chema signals me the number 5 with his hand and I think, “Cool, they must be watching 5 other penguins dive underneath them”. He later tells me he was referring to 5 mid-sized Galapagos sharks close to the bottom,

just a few feet away from me. The group is pleased to have seen them, but I’m quite relieved to hear this after the dive ends. We all climb into our dinghy and get back aboard M/Y Wild Aid’s Passion, where we are greeted with warm chocolate by cheerful crewmember Roberto, and are provided towels by other friendly crewmembers, to use after we remove our wetsuits. Roberto announces we now have snacks awaiting us on the top deck and Fernando, the marine biologist leading our expedition, lets us know he’ll be giving a lecture on Darwin after dinner in the main salon. We’re now relaxing on deck, enjoying warm empanadas while watching a beautiful sunset over Isla Santiago. It can’t get much better than this. Seagulls and petrels fly by. Their sound is the only one we hear, along with the soft caress of the water against our hull. We’re alone in this virgin corner of the world that, I imagine, looks as pure and authentic as it was hundreds of years ago when Europeans first sighted this archipelago. It’s everyone’s responsibility now to help maintain it as pristine as it is, and protect its vast endemic flora and fauna. The Galapagos National Park and the Ecuadorian Government are doing a great job, and so are a few conservation organizations and luxury travel companies like Wild Aid and Angermeyer Cruises/ Andando Tours. It’s thanks to them I’m here enjoying this pristine paradise, for which I’m truly thankful. Wild Aid’s program, in

Its nutrient-rich waters support the concentration and reproduction of migratory marine species ranging from humpback whales and sea turtles to giant manta rays and hammerhead sharks. The islands offer an eclectic mix of species that coupled with high levels of endemism make them very special. Here we may see penguins living side by side with sea lions and iguanas, prehistoric giant tortoises, the only nocturnal seagull, the only true marine lizard and the only flightless cormorant in the world. The islands are a rich mix of active volcanoes, stunning beaches and abundant, tame wildlife that’s not afraid of humans. I found it a unique experience to be able to closely watch mother sea lions breastfeeding their newborn babies. Some of them even approached us with curiosity. It was a lovely experience to also swim close to sea turtles, colorful fish and penguins. Galapagos is an isolated charming corner of the world well worth discovering.

Sus aguas ricas en nutrientes ayudan a la concentración y reproducción de especies marinas migratorias que van desde las ballenas yubarta y las tortugas marinas a las gigantescas manta rayas y los tiburones martillo. Las islas ofrecen una ecléctica mezcla de especies que sumados a los altos niveles de endemismo las vuelven muy especiales. Aquí podemos ver pingüinos conviviendo con iguanas y lobos marinos, miles de tortugas prehistóricas, especies únicas en el planeta como las gaviotas nocturnas, los únicos lagartos verdaderamente marinos y al cormorán no volador. Las islas son una rica mezcla de volcanes activos, deslumbrantes playas y abundante fauna mansa que no le tiene miedo al hombre. A mí me resultó una vivencia espectacular el poder observar de tan cerca a las lobas marinas amamantar a sus bebés recién nacidos. Algunos bebés hasta se nos acercaban con curiosidad. Me encantó la experiencia, al igual que la de nadar junto a tortugas, peces coloridos y pingüinos. Galápagos es un encantador rincón del mundo digno de ser visitado.

What is the link between Darwin and the Galápagos Islands? Text by ELODIE MARIE CAMPRASSE Charles Darwin (1809-1882) renowned naturalist who has proposed innovative and controversial theories in the field of biology, first embarked on board the HMS Beagle from 1831 to 1836 as a geologist. The initial goal of the expedition was to map the coasts of South America. Scientists on board took advantage of the stopovers to make observations and collect samples of flora and fauna. In the Galápagos Islands, Darwin noticed that the same animals had gradually evolved to become different species on the islands where conditions, like food availability, were different. For example, the Darwin’s finches’ beak morphology had evolved according to the kind of food available. For Darwin, two big ideas emerged from this trip that later would revolutionize the field of biology: the unity and diversity of life can be explained by evolution, and natural selection drives adaptive evolution. In 1838, he speculated that all living species evolved from one or a few common ancestors, with time, through the process of natural selection. For a long time, these ideas did not have unanimous support but nowadays they make up the foundation of biology.

El quiche de patata y puerros es delicioso así como el caprese de mozzarella, tomate y albahaca, el de brócoli y jamón, y el de queso y almendras. Divinas son sus tartas de crema de variados sabores como la de dulce de leche, la de cuajada de limón y la de mousse de chocolate, todas cubiertas de merengue italiano. La clásica tarta argentina Pasta Frola se puede encargar de membrillo y albaricoques. Later, in search of a more economically stable environment, Victoria set her sights on the United States and three years ago she arrived in Key Biscayne and fell under its charming spell. The island’s family friendly feel and its unique casual atmosphere became the ideal place to settle with her husband and her three children. It’s no doubt Clásica Victoria was successful back home as it is here in the US. The items on her menu are as varied as they are exquisite: delectable quiches, flaky croissants made by a French pastry chef, brioche sandwiches, and the famous miga - a crustless white bread sandwich made with ham and cheese, cheese, egg and tomato or vegetables. Among her finest quiches are the potato and leak, the caprese made with mozzarella, tomato and basil, the broccoli and ham and the cheese with almonds. You may be easily tempted by the stunning selection of cream tarts made with distinct flavors of dulce de leche, lemon curd or chocolate mousse with orange, all topped with Italian meringue. She also offers some gluten free items such as her layered carrot cake, sprinkled with powdered ginger, made with coconut and almond flour and her chocolate cake. She also makes the famous Pasta Frola, a clasic on the menu that can be made to order with quince or fresh apricots. Lovely shelves line the walls displaying small satchels of treats such as the “lenguas de gato” (butter cookies resembling the tongue of a cat), almond thins, palmiers, meringues and double chocolate chip cookies that also make for nice gifts. Clásica Victoria also provides catering services for events, weddings, Christmas dinners and Nautical parties. Opened seven days a week from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm, Clásica Victoria is sure to welcome you with a nice breakfast of freshly squeezed orange juice, coffee and tea as well as a wealth of freshly made green smoothies for those seeking healthier options made with spinach, celery, apple, orange juice or the red smoothie of apples and berries. ost of us have heard about how yoga can help us to remain balanced, flexible, healthy and pain free. In fact in our last edition I wrote about many of the reasons why it is good to have a regular practice....but what if there was an easier way to deepen some of those benefits without putting in the effort? Thai massage (bodywork) and shiatsu do exactly that. While having a yoga practice is highly recommended, adding some bodywork sessions to your self-care ritual is also a great way to relieve/ prevent pain, increase optimal movement and energy flow, and to help you go deeper into your practice, whatever type of physical practice you engage in, and especially if you have no physical practice. As a society we are becoming more and more sedentary, spending an average of 10 hours per day staring at a screen. Is it any wonder that we are suffering from muscle contraction which in turn causes headaches, pain, loss of flexibility, movement and in many cases misalignment of the spine. A staggering 100 million people suffer from back pain in the US reaching $600 BILLION per year in healthcare costs - obviously there is a problem here. What if you could prevent this by taking time out once a week or at least once a month to take some preventative measures.

Something else that I notice, within my practice, is that when people travel long distances, consequently getting out of their usual routine of eating and sleeping, they really need help to get their bodies to come back in shape. We call this grounding, and it is deeply affected by the spleen and stomach meridians, which thrive on consistency and routine. Palming or using detailed thumb work on the body, particularly of the legs, can greatly assist in the speed in which this happens and bring greater sense of harmony and energy to the body. Don’t take for granted that we are going to become stiff and restricted in our movements as we age - get proactive and move the body. Adding a regular bodywork session to yourself care routine can help the fascia - fibrous tissue that encloses the muscle - to remain healthy, bringing more movement and flexibility into the joints, and as a result helping to prevent muscle aches, stiffness, bone degeneration and generalized pain. When you are able to allow yourself to relax and be supported by your bodyworker, you can go deeper into a stretch, allowing the channels/meridians to open. When our channels are blocked we cannot function to the best of our abilities and we may become diseased. Interestingly, in the time of the Buddha - Thai doctors/bodyworkers only got paid if their clients/patients stayed healthy......how times have changed. SALMON WITH DILL WAFFLES AND HORSERADISH CREAM
Serves 4 Prep Time: 30 minutes Cook Time: 45 minutes INGREDIENTS: Waffles: 2 cups all purpose flour 2 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 1/2 cups buttermilk, room temperature 8 tablespoons butter, melted, divided 2 eggs 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped plus 4 small sprigs for garnish zest of 1 lemon 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Horseradish cream: 1 cup mascarpone 4 tablespoons prepared horseradish 3 tablespoons heavy cream 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Salmon: 4 – 5-ounce salmon filets, bones removed and skinned 2 tablespoons Colavita Extra Virgin Olive Oil Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper

Process: Waffles: Preheat waffle iron to medium-high. Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a large mixing bowl. In another bowl whisk together the buttermilk, 6 tablespoons melted butter, eggs, dill, lemon zest and black pepper. Pour the milk and egg mixture into the flour mixture and stir together until just incorporated. Lightly brush the top and bottom of the waffle iron with remaining melted butter and fill the iron with the recommended amount and cook per manufacturer’s instructions. Set the waffles aside on a baking sheet to warm up again just before serving. Horseradish cream: In a medium bowl combine the mascarpone, horseradish, heavy cream, lemon juice, dill, salt and pepper. Stir to combine well and set aside. Salmon: Preheat oven to 400ºF. Coat the salmon filets on both sides with the olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place the salmon “skin side” down on a baking sheet and bake for about 10-12 minutes until cooked though. While the salmon is cooking place the baking sheet with the waffles in the oven for about 2 minutes to warm. To serve: Place 1 or 2 waffles on each plate and place the baked salmon on top. Spoon a dollop of the horseradish mascarpone on top of the salmon filets and garnish with a sprig of dill.

I
t hasn’t even been 3 years since Julie Hylton started off on a new voyage of discovery without even leaving sight of land. It was after she moved to New York City that Julie discovered sailing and fell in love with the feeling of confidence, freedom and exhilaration that she found out on the water. Julie’s discovery lead her to create a women’s sailing fashion company called 12 Degrees West. As she tells the story in her online Journal of March 2015, “A few years ago I was in Newport with five other women. We went to every sailing store in town, and tried on every pair of shorts on offer (men’s and women’s). In the end, we didn’t buy anything, discouraged by the lack of options and unflattering fits. I mean, who would make shorts for women that didn’t have any stretch in them? We said to each other: how hard could it be to make decent sailing gear for women?” I know that I’m not the only one to have had a similar experience trying to find functional, yet attractive sailing wear, especially in larger sizes. And to see “fashion” in the same sentence as “sailing,” well that certainly got my attention. As it turns out – Julie was in the right place at the right time. “Luckily, in NYC we have resources in the Garment District that would be hard to find anywhere else. Yet sourcing fabric is a real challenge, especially the kind of performance fabric we wanted to use. There are dozens of little decisions to be made. Finally you’re ready to find a factory to make the clothes. It was important to us to make everything in the U.S., and to try and stay in NYC

o pasaron ni 3 años desde que Julie Hylton zarpó hacia un nuevo viaje de descubrimiento sin siquiera perder de vista a la tierra. Fue luego de mudarse a la ciudad de Nueva York que Julie descubrió la náutica y se enamoró de la sensación de confianza, libertad y euforia que encontró en el agua. Y ver de moda en la misma oración que náutico realmente llamó mi atención. Resultó ser que Julie estaba en el lugar adecuado en el momento adecuado. It’s definitely more expensive to manufacture in the U.S., and NYC in particular, but we wanted to stay close to the production, and make sure we partnered with legitimate companies with fair labor practices. We’re thrilled that the end result is what we originally set off to Newport to find: functional and stylish women’s sailing gear that works equally well on or off the boat. So you can just enjoy the sailing.” Julie seems to appreciate East Coast style, nautically-speaking. Her designs are strictly Newport, very conservative. But when it comes to materials and construction, she’s very high-tech. That’s just one of the reasons I appreciate the 12 Degrees West line. I ran into Julie recently (well… virtually-speaking), on Facebook where she was probing gal sailors on the Women Who Sail group page. She asked for feedback, posing this question: “Would any of you buy women-specific sailing clothes in sizes 16, 18, 20, or other?” Being one of those women, I responded and so did almost 100 other sailors. I asked her when she thought she might have larger sized sailing apparel available. “My plan is to have 16 and 18 in two styles (Sag Harbor Skort and Chesapeake Short) for early-mid October - the patterns are being revised now,” Julie told me. “Other sizes and styles in spring 2018 depending on how those two pieces do.” I think they’ll do just fine! Who Knew? According to Julie’s journal, “The striped sailor shirt has an illustrious 160-year history. The original navy and white pattern was designed for French sailors – the pattern would help rescuers more easily spot a sailor who fell overboard. The 1858 “Act of France” made the shirt the official uniform for all French navy quartermasters and seamen. At the time, French navy was headquartered in Breton, so the style became known as la marinière or the Breton stripe. The original design had 21 stripes – one for each of Napoleon’s victories. The sailor stripe pattern is so closely linked with Brittany that their flag, designed in 1923, also contains the Breton stripe pattern.

You can’t have too many reusable bags on board! My samples, (which have been returned!) also came with a lovely hand-written note from Julie, something I’ve noticed more new companies are including as a way to give customers that warm & fuzzy feeling. Here’s a description from their catalog: “Our Marblehead Pullover and Sandy Hook Shirt are constructed of soft, stretchy performance fabric with moisture management and SPF. Shoulders are designed for maximum mobility, and a dropped back hem ensures coverage while moving around the boat. We amp up the style factor with feminine touches like flattering seam lines and ruching in strategic places.” You can see how much emphasis is placed on the performance and feel. That’s something we can all really appreciate.
